Astrology for Yourself

Astrology for Yourself

This book got name-checked by several astrologers as essential reading for beginners.  Mecca Woods , author of  Astrology for Happiness and Success , says:  “It's an excellent resource for anyone interested in learning their own birth chart or about astrology in general. Its workbook exercises walk the reader through the fundamental basics, step by step, making astrology accessible and easy to learn.”

On the Heavenly Spheres

On the Heavenly Spheres

Another one that got several shout-outs is an oldie but goodie: a book that deals with the history of traditional astrology and birth chart reading. These are practices you won’t find in many internet articles these days, but they're absolutely essential for building a strong astrological foundation.

Sam Reynold s , who both practices and teaches astrology in New York City, notes, “This is the main text for my own classes and private students because it's a grounded primer on traditional astrology. It helps to round out why certain ideas are foundational in astrological learning. It's a gift that keeps on giving.”

Astrology for the Soul

Looking for an off-the-beaten-path entry point? Claire Comstock-Gay , also known as Madame Clairvoyant and purveyor of horoscopes at The Cut, says: “Jan Spiller's  Astrology for the Soul is the first astrology book I read that really spoke to me personally, and made me think astrology might have serious things to teach me about myself that I didn't already know. It deals primarily with the North Node—a placement that doesn't get much attention in most of the astrology writing I see online—but it's still clear and totally accessible to beginners.”

Parkers' Astrology

This beautifully designed book was recommended by several astrologers.  Amelia Quint , whose horoscopes appear in  Rookie  and  Coveteur , said, “My favorite book to recommend for astrology beginners is  Parker's Astrology . It's huge and does a great job of introducing you to all the concepts you'll need to know to get started, like planets, signs, houses, aspects, midpoints, and more.”  Rebecca Gordon , co-author of  Your Body and the Stars , added, “This book manages to cover so much mileage in astrology, and it is a work of art. It also makes a great gift for the astrology enthusiast.”

The Essential Guide to Practical Astrology

Janelle Belgrave , whose work has appeared in Refinery29 and Rookie, says, “This is a wonderful basic guide book that’s filled with everything an astrology student needs to know. Written in a friendly, easy to understand tone that draws the reader in, pick this book up if you want to learn more about zodiac signs, houses, elements, aspects and much more. April even includes tips for planning around lunar and long term planetary cycles.”

Aspects in Astrology

So you know that your sun is in a certain sign—but what does it mean if other planets are right next to it, or across from it? This book can help you dig deeper into what astrologers call aspects , or the relationship that planets have to each other.

Amelia Quint suggests this book for the more advanced student, saying, “It explains the relationships between planets and your birth chart and how those influence your personality. It goes really deep and talks about how experiences from your past influence your psyche in the present day, and how you can overcome them. It's one of my essentials!”

The Twelve Houses

Want to understand what astrologers mean when they talk about "houses" and "zones," or what those different pie pieces of your chart are? Gordon says this is a definitive guide. “He takes you on an epic journey through the different slices of our sky. The writing is stellar and these descriptions will stay with you throughout your studies. This book is ideal for an advanced beginner or intermediate student of astrology.”

Brand: Weiser Books Saturn: A New Look at an Old Devil

Going through a Saturn Return? Perhaps it’s time to learn more about what, precisely, Saturn is all about. Claire Comstock-Gay says, “Liz Greene's Saturn is a little more advanced, and deals specifically with the influence of Saturn, the planet of limits, disappointment, and struggle. This was a really helpful text for me, not just for learning about Saturn specifically, but also for learning how to think more broadly about the self-discovery and wisdom we can find even in the so-called ‘bad’ or ‘difficult’ parts of a birth chart.”

Brand: Nicolas-Hays, Inc. Astrological Insights into Personality

If you’re looking to mix some psychology with your astrology, this might be the book for you. Janelle Belgrave says, “Betty breaks down the basics, but also deep dives into Jungian principles, explores anima and animus, and looks into how astrology can help unveil personality traits based upon family dynamics and how they can be represented by the planets in one’s chart. But it can definitely be confronting, so be prepared to analyze and reflect!”

Astrology and the Authentic Self

Demetra George is one of the queens of astrology, so we aren’t surprised that one of her newer books is also on the list for the more advanced student. Reynolds says: “I love this Demetra George book because George has spent at least four decades writing about astrology, from both modern and classical points of view. She has been an ardent advocate of the feminine in astrology, by writing books and teaching about the use of asteroid goddesses. She’s a bridge-maker.”

Brand: Weiser Books Predictive Astrology: The Eagle and the Lark

Astrologer Katie Sweetman offers two suggestions for the advanced astrologer. Sweetman says:

"It's not a beginner book, but it was one of the first astrology books that opened my eyes to the idea that astrology is about cycles of time. And that you can predict when certain things will happen based on where the planets are in the sky now compared to where they were when you were born."

Plume Books Cosmos and Psyche: Intimations of a New World View

Sweetman's next suggestion is a big-picture read about how astrology can contextualize humans' place in history. "Richard Tarnas specializes in what I call 'Big Time,' these large cycles of time that help us to see how our lives as well as humanity unfolds over years if not decades," Sweetman tells OprahMag.com. She elaborates:

"This is quite the scholarly read. At 592 pages, it's a hefty tome, too. But if recent world events have taught us anything is that everything is cyclical and what's unfolding in 2020 has parallels in other eras of time when planets were in similar patterns. And astrologers have been concerned about what could be happening in 2020 for a while now."

You Were Born for This: Astrology for Radical Self-Acceptance

Sweetman also suggests two more accessible astrology books. According to Sweetman, Chani Nicholas and Jessica Lanyadoo's new releases are "bringing new life to what's available to a wider audience."

You Were Born For This  empowers anyone to understand what the stars mean for them, specifically. By the end of the book, you'll be drafting your own birth chart—and understanding it means, with Nicholas' acumen.

Note: Jeanna Kadlec is Chani Nicholas' Director of Content, but was not at the writing of this piece.

Astrology for Real Relationships: Understanding You, Me, and How We All Get Along

As Jessica Lanyadoo's book shows, astrological relationship compatibility is so much deeper than star signs , or the summaries on popular apps like Co-Star. After establishing the essentials (like why you should pay attention to what sign is in Venus on your chart), Lanyadoo takes readers on soaring, yet practical, analyses of their relationships.

Madame Clairevoyant’s Guide to the Stars: Astrology, Our Icons, and Our Selves

Finally, Claire Comstock-Gay's pop culture-centric astrology book is a fascinating read for anyone who can't get enough of the stars above, and the stars in Hollywood. Not quite astrology manual,  Guide to the Stars  is rather an incisive narrative about how this ancient practice can impact an entire culture.

Ernest Hemingway once said: “There is no friend as loyal as a book.” But depending on your zodiac sign, not all friends are created equal.

Since the dawn of humanity, we have been storytellers. Literature is one of the greatest art forms humankind has ever known. Great epics fascinated the first people, who passed them down through oral tradition.

As progress was made, stories began to be written down—first chiseled or painted into stone, then upon scrolls, into music and plays and eventually into books. With the explosion of printing, stories were able to reach far more people more quickly than ever before.

Yet, as we continue to embark into the technological age, we are finding that stories are accessible at the click of a button—and are even being translated into vast new mediums such as film, television, video games and even the budding realm of virtual reality.

Our innate need to tell stories will never fade, as we are dreamers at heart who are fascinated by the human experience, emotion, relationships, our place in the cosmos, history and the future, and of course, the journey of life. Because of these stories—especially those incarnated as books or literature—will always be one of our pillars of achievement as a species.

To understand the complex world of literature and in honor of October being National Book Month, the New York Post spoke exclusively with Marianne Streit , a prolific teacher educating high school students English throughout the nation. As a team, we put our heads together to create the definitive list of books that align with astrology and the zodiac.

Find out which book aligns perfectly with your zodiac sign!

ARIES (MARCH 21 – APRIL 19): “ Children of Blood and Bone, ” by Tomi Adeyemi

“Children of Blood and Bone,” by Tomi Adeyemi

“Children of Blood and Bone,” by Tomi Adeyemi, is the perfect fit for the bold and confident Aries . This is the first book in a proposed trilogy (two books are out at time of print) and it follows Zélie Adebola as she and her friends fight to have magic restored to her village. To do this, she and her fellow rebels are going against the ruling class which results in danger, adventure and trials for relationships. Being ruled by Mars, the planet of passion and war, Aries will quickly root for the heroine as she fights to bring justice to her land.

TAURUS (APRIL 20 – MAY 20): “ The Great Gatsby, ” by F. Scott Fitzgerald

“The Great Gatsby,” by F. Scott Fitzgerald

A classic novel written in a bygone era, the beautiful language of this story along with the love and wealth of the old-monied inhabitants of East Egg will entice a Taurus to root for their favorite lovers. Love or hate Jay Gatsby, one has to admire his determination to go after what he wants. The problem arises when what he wants is already spoken for. The opulence, passion, perseverance and passion in this novel make it a perfect fit for a Taurus.

GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUNE 20): “ The Circle ,” by Dave Eggers

“The Circle,” by Dave Eggers

“The Circle,” by Dave Eggers taps into the tech-savvy mindset of a Gemini . Set in a company that promotes and celebrates the use of technology to make everyone’s life better, “The Circle” does a great job of capturing the positives as well as the negatives of our consumption of technology. It’s a great book to make one think about how we use technology in a plot-filled novel that follows the exciting life of a young lady. It was such a good book it was turned into a movie with Emma Watson and Tom Hanks!

CANCER (JUNE 21 – JULY 22): “ The Bookish Life of Nina Hill ,” by Abbi Waxman

“The Bookish Life of Nina Hill,” by Abbi Waxman

“The Bookish Life of Nina Hill,” by Abbi Waxman, is a perfect fit for a Cancer . Nina Hill loves her life working in a book shop, enjoying her trivia team and loving her cat, but then it gets turned upside down when the father she never knew passes away and Nina learns she has quite a few relatives (not all of whom are excited that she exists). At the same time, her trivia nemesis, who happens to be quite cute, is acting all friendly towards her and that throws a kink in her carefully planned life. Cancers who love the emotional aspects of life will appreciate the humor (you will chuckle out loud) coupled with the relationships (romantic as well as familial) and will read this book in just a few days!

LEO (JULY 23 – AUGUST 22): “ One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest, ” by Ken Kesey

“One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” by Ken Kesey

The fiery personality of a Leo will love R.P. McMurphy from “One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” by Ken Kesey. McMurphy is committed to a psychiatriatric ward in a novel that was written in the hey-day of the counterculture era, and he is not one to abide by Nurse Ratched’s rules. One can’t help but root for the anti-hero as he pushes the boundaries of the ward to not only amuse himself, but to help his fellow patients. The narrator is another patient who feigns being deaf and mute, and his powers of observation are only obscured by hallucinations he contends with at times. This book is a fan-favorite!

VIRGO (AUGUST 23 – SEPTEMBER 22): “ A Man Called Ove ,” by Fredrik Backman

A Man Called Ove

Ove, the main character from “A Man Called Ove,” by Fredrik Backman, will appeal to the hardworking and practical mindset of a Virgo . Ove is an older gentleman who is quite set in his ways, and when he has to interact with his neighbors, his “old coot” ways result in laugh out loud experiences. Ove’s personality will remind you of some of the older people in your life whom you likely love dearly, and their stubborn antics can’t mask the hearts of gold they have. This book will bring out the feels without being overly sentimental.

LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 23 – OCTOBER 22): “ A Dog’s Purpose ,” by W. Bruce Cameron

“A Dog’s Purpose,” by W. Bruce Cameron

Libras tend to be emotional and appreciate partnerships, commitment and connectivity. “A Dog’s Purpose,” by W. Bruce Cameron, is a perfect fit for these readers. The novel traces the soul of a dog as it reincarnates into different dogs and their lives. After reading this book, you will 100% become a better dog owner. Although a fictional story (written by Cameron to help a friend deal with the grief of losing her first dog), the concept of a dog’s soul and its purpose is beautiful and enlightening. This will surely bring on the feels for man’s best friend!

SCORPIO (OCTOBER 23 – NOVEMBER 21): “ Daughter of Bone and Smoke ,” by Laini Taylor

“Daughter of Bone and Smoke,” by Laini Taylor

In the real world/mystical world experience of “Daughter of Bone and Smoke,” by Laini Taylor, the reader closely follows the life of Karou. She lives in Prague and seems to be an average art student (albeit with beautiful blue hair that doesn’t need to be dyed), but she is far from average. Entering Karou’s life is the enticing Akiva, and Karou embarks on a journey to discover who she really is. The Scorpio’s innate traits of passion, power, transformation and sexuality will love this first of three books. You’ll likely want to read all three in quick succession to find out what happens!

SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 22 – DECEMBER 21): “ A Walk in the Woods ,” by Bill Bryson

“A Walk in the Woods,” by Bill Bryson

A Sagittarius’s love of adventure, spontaneity and curiosity will entice them to check out “A Walk in the Woods,” by Bill Bryson. A nonfiction account of Bryson’s hike along the Appalachian Trail will introduce readers to the history of the trail, but his hiking partner and the situations Bryson finds himself in (interesting hikers and some bears) will leave the reader laughing out loud. This book is not just for the outdoors enthusiasts: it’s a book for all who want to read about another person who challenges himself and grows through the challenge he chooses. The way of telling the tale is pure brilliance.

CAPRICORN (DECEMBER 22 – JANUARY 19): “ Heart of Darkness ,” by Joseph Conrad

“Heart of Darkness,” by Joseph Conrad

Capricorns tend to be ambitious and are intrigued by wealth, authority and ambition. These traits tend to make the novella “Heart of Darkness,” by Joseph Conrad, a good fit for them. This is by far the most difficult text on this list to read, even though it is the shortest piece, but it’s worth the effort to journey down the Congo River to take Kurtz out of the jungle where his methods for acquiring ivory have become unsound. A story that is based upon the realm of King Leopold and his historical antics, this story is amazing to read with others so you can talk about what is happening. The plot is simple, Marlow goes down the river, but the concept of power and restraint and wealth are what makes the story so rich.

AQUARIUS (JANUARY 20 – FEBRUARY 18): “ Endurance ,” by Alfred Lansing and “ Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children ,” by Ransom Riggs

“Endurance,” by Alfred Lansing & “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children,” by Ransom Riggs

When interviewing Marianne, she admitted that two books came to mind for Aquarius : “Endurance,” by Alfred Lansing, and “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children,” by Ransom Riggs. Aquarius’s appreciation of community and friendship will be found in both books, just in very different ways. “Endurance” is the true account of Shackleton’s 1914 attempt to reach the South Pole (it didn’t go well), and how his crew had to pull together to survive. For the fictional story of “Miss Peregrine’s,” sixteen year old Jake ends up on an island that had a home for children who were quarantined due to not only being peculiar, but possibly dangerous. The bond the kids formed is what will appeal to the tribe these kids form.

PISCES (FEBRUARY 19 – MARCH 20): “ Graceling ,” by Kristin Chashore

“Graceling,” by Kristin Chashore

“Graceling,” by Kristin Chashore, is the perfect fit to fill the desire for magic, mysticism and the supernatural wants of a Pisces . In a world where those who are born with a specific grace (as physically evident by having two different colored eyes), some’s graces are more useful to the kingdom than others. Katsa, the main character, has the power to kill with her bare hands and she is forced to use this skill for the king. She, however, doesn’t want to be a hitman and has to figure out how to fulfill her duties while being true to her desires. Throw a little romance into the story and the reader goes along for an amazing, creative ride. The beauty of this book is that it is part of a series.
