17 Therapist-Approved Books That Will Teach You Something New About Yourself

books help me

By Anna Borges

I don’t know about you, but reading about mental health is a huge part of my self-care routine. Expanding my reading list to include everything from self-help books to memoirs to reference texts has been, if not life-changing, then at least very life-improving. I’m pretty much always on the lookout for book recs. To beef up my reading list—and yours—I decided to crowdsource some of the best books on mental health.

Who did I ask? First, the experts: psychologists, therapists , counselors, and other mental health professionals. Then I asked people what books their therapists have recommended they read on their quests for better self-knowledge. Here are some of the titles you might want to add to your TBR list (and for even more suggestions this callout on Twitter is filled with recs that came in after I wrapped this article up).

The Highly Sensitive Person by Elaine N. Aron

“When my therapist recommended The Highly Sensitive Person to me, I was admittedly a little dubious at first. This book was supposed to tell me something about myself I didn’t already know? Sure, Jan. But a few pages in, I was staring, mouth agape, at the pages, wondering if the author had stolen my middle school diary. All my personal baggage, which I’d been carrying around since childhood—‘you’re too sensitive,’ ‘you’re too emotional, just seeing someone else who’s upset is enough to set you off,’ ‘why are you so jumpy? All I did was brush past you!’—suddenly it was all being explained to me. And not in terms of brokenness, which is what I’d always attributed it to, but to my hardwiring, the way I’m made, my very self. The author was telling me this could be positive, it could be my advantage. It could be a good thing. Mind: blown. I had never felt so seen.”

The Mindful Path to Self-Compassion by Christopher Germer

“Nearly everyone struggles with self-validation these days, especially in a time when judgements are pervasive, Instagram makes us all feel like we need to somehow be perfect all the time, and dating apps create levels of bad behavior and feelings of rejection that you may not have endured since prom season. When patients tell me they want to work on not being ‘so hard’ on themselves, my go-to book to start this process is The Mindful Path to Self-Compassion. Beyond a clear understanding of the research and his own personal practice, Germer shares client examples that are so relatable. I love that from the start, Germer takes the stance that this is an ‘un-self-help book’—challenging the idea that something is wrong with you that needs fixing. Germer teaches us how to be better friends to ourselves, offer kindness to others, and approach our emotions effectively to not only feel better, but live better.”

Health at Every Size: The Surprising Truth About Your Weight by Linda Bacon

“Using a healthy dose of scientific research, the author gives you the tools to push back against diet culture . She teaches you to take care of and value your body now, instead of waiting for that mythical future time of When I Lose Weight. If you’re denying yourself any pleasure from food, putting off things like dating or buying clothes you like, the book offers another perspective. It’s empowering because it helps you let go of the idea that before you do the things you want to do or feel good about yourself, you have to achieve this one thing. The patients I have recommended the book to have found it extremely powerful.”

— Margot Levin , Ph.D., clinical psychologist

The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo

“Psychological research is a little behind in this area, but anecdotally I have seen minimalism improve mood, relationships, physical health, and even cognitive functioning in my moderately anxious and depressed clients. Plus there is research supporting the idea that buying experiences provides more happiness than buying-things, which loosely supports the idea that getting rid of stuff can make you happier. I believe that before long we’ll start assessing our client’s accumulation of material goods when suspecting depression and prescribe minimalism as an evidence-based treatment. That’s just a prediction for now, because it appears to have that impact but isn’t yet scientifically validated. Until then, read and enjoy the benefits of lightening the load.”

The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk

“When my therapist offhandedly mentioned The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma during a session, I made a mental note to check it out. I love homework. If you’re wondering how your body stores trauma and how it impacts your perceptions and daily life, this is the book to read to find out. It's a slow read—a heavy read—in part because of the processing you do while you read. Suddenly, there is a lens for understanding certain reactions that have only ever felt instinctive, visceral, subconscious. ”

The Happiness Trap by Russ Harris

“This is a great starter book for those wanting real-life tools to really put mindfulness into practice. It also lays the foundation of what Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is all about—a psychotherapy that builds off cognitive-behavioral therapy and teaches how to coexist with thoughts, mindfully letting them pass rather than fighting with them or avoiding them. It teaches you how to open up to difficult feelings rather than running from them, leading to decreased anxiety and a fuller engagement with life. I have recommended it to many clients over the years who have found it a very helpful supplement to our cognitive-behavioral work.”

Haldol and Hyacinths: A Bipolar Life by Melody Moezzi

Sisters of the Yam: Black Women and Self-Recovery by bell hooks

“ Sisters of the Yam is a book that every Black woman and girl should read. Black women often take reactive approaches to health and wellness. Meaning we tend to only focus on ourselves when things begin to break down and weaken. We must find ways to proactively promote our well-being. This book unpacks why self-actualization and self-recovery are critical for Black women . It discusses why it is important for us to nurture ourselves as Black women and provides helpful advice for a demographic whose perspective is often excluded and overlooked in the self-help genre. Although it was originally released in 1993, its message is still remarkably relevant and powerful.”

Being and Loving: How to Achieve Intimacy with Another Person and Retain One's Own Identity by Althea Horner

“If you really want to know what makes it so hard to maintain a sense of yourself and have intimacy, and you’re kind of a psych nerd, this is the book for you. It takes a deep dive into early relationships and the messages we learned from them, and how they impact our close relationships today. It’s old and not the easiest read, but it’s loaded with a ton of ‘ah ha’ moments.”

My Grandmother's Hands: Racialized Trauma and the Pathway to Mending Our Hearts and Bodies by Resmaa Menakem

“This book does something quite special: Using knowledge from a mix of fields, including history and neurobiology, it describes how racialized violence in the United States can be traced through to the way white supremacy and white-on-white violence flourished in places like Europe. Not only that, but it compassionately connects this to modern-day police violence and provides many examples of how to challenge and dislodge these patterns from an embodied perspective rather than merely an intellectual one. If you’re wondering how the physiology of trauma connects to community healing and legacies of violence, especially with an eye toward interrupting them and truly understanding how police violence affects even its perpetrators, this book is a great read.”

Out of the Woods by Brent Williams

“ Out of the Woods is an incredibly powerful book about a man’s journey with mental health issues. It has an unusual, striking method of delivery as it's a highly detailed graphic novel, and it’s full of authenticity and vulnerability. Rarely do we get the opportunity to read about experiences men have with mental health issues, and that makes this book even more special.”

Why Life Speeds Up as You Get Older by Douwe Draaisma

“A collection of essays supported by references from the world of European history and art, this book poses questions about memory and the brain that straddle the divide between psychology and philosophy, or psychological theory and lived experience. Why do we remember forward, and not backward? What accounts for deja vu? How does marriage change us over time? What does it mean to be a savant? Rich prose and copious documentation—reproductions of artwork and photography—encourage the reader’s engagement in this highly accessible, educational, and personally edifying book.”

The Collected Schizophrenias by Esmé Weijun Wang

“My therapist recommended this book to me to help me better understand my brother. Schizophrenia is so misunderstood, and this book goes into how what most people think of as ‘schizophrenia’ might actually be one of several disorders known as ‘the schizophrenias,’ like schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and schizotypal personality disorder. It also covers how much disagreement there is in the medical community regarding diagnoses, treatments, and the like. I don’t even think you need someone in your life with schizophrenia for this book to impact you. I’d recommend it to anyone who wants to understand a misunderstood disorder more, and that should be everyone.”

Empowered Boundaries: Speaking Truth, Setting Boundaries, and Inspiring Social Change by Cristien Storm

“This is such a compassionate and nuanced book on boundaries! Short and to the point, it has practical steps, explained theory, and so much understanding of the world in its complexity. If you want a book that integrates community-generated knowledge about boundary-setting with deep thoughtfulness, political analysis, and a macro-level outlook on the kinds of forces that impact our individual actions, this is it. It encourages us to see boundaries holistically, as things we create to not just ‘keep bad things out,’ but also to protect what is precious to us and consider who we are moving toward being in the world. Because it’s a slim book, it’s also really practical as a gift or something for a book club.”

Feeding Your Demons by Tsultrim Allione

“This book has empowered me with new practices and perspectives on how to deal with overwhelming anxiety and fear. The ways of coping by means of thought suppression and distraction had failed to work and left me even more fatigued and panicked. The concepts outlined in this book have taught me to compassionately tend to the dark thoughts and dreadful feelings, and through practice I work towards a more peaceful existence.”

The Drama of the Gifted Child by Alice Miller

“First, this book isn’t about gifted kids in the sense you’re probably thinking—it’s not about test scores or academic performance. Instead Miller is looking at the ‘gifts’ that come at the hands of an abusive or troubled childhood, such as increased empathy and high achievement. My counselor recommended this to me in hopes that it would give me the vocabulary I needed to talk about my childhood, because the abuse I endured was a quiet, insidious kind that I constantly doubted was actually abuse. Not only did it do that, but it helped me name and accept how my family screwed me up and set me on the path of healing.”

Reading is one of the best ways to practice English. It’s fun, relaxing and helps you improve your comprehension skills and vocabulary.

To help you pick out books, we’ve rounded up some of our favourite novels. The stories are full of adventures and exciting characters – and better yet, they are easy to read for language learners.

So here are our top 7 books to help you practise English at home.

1. One Day, by David Nicholls

One Day tells the story of Dexter and Emma who spend a night together after their university graduation. Each chapter revisits the lives of the protagonists on the same date for twenty years. Their relationship evolves over the years: sometimes they’re together, sometimes they’re chasing their individual dreams. It’s a funny, endearing and bittersweet tale of friendship and the unfairness of life.

If you love this easy-to-read novel, watch the 2011 film adaptation that stars Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess.

2. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon

This mystery novel – with a mysterious title – takes the reader on a journey into the mind of Christopher John Francis Boone, a 15-year-old boy who sees the world and the people around him in a different way.

Christopher finds himself in the middle of an adventure after he discovers the dead body of the neighbour’s dog, speared by a garden fork. As the story unfolds, Christopher finds out the truth about his mother. He also travels to London alone and takes an A-level maths exam, all in a frenzy of excitement and fear.

We love this book – and the English level is perfect for intermediate learners .

3. Northern Lights by Philip Pullman

Northern Lights – known as The Golden Compass in the US – is the first book in Philip Pullman’s fantasy trilogy His Dark Materials. It was published in 1995 and has since become a classic in the young-adult fantasy genre .

The novel tells the story of twelve-year-old Lyra Belacqua. She’s a brave and curious girl who lives in a world of mythical creatures and parallel universes. Like all humans in this world, she has a “daemon”, a talking spirit animal that constantly accompanies her. Together, they embark on a journey that is filled with danger and excitement.

If you’re looking for a thrilling but easy book to read in English, Northern Lights is a great place to start. You won’t be able to put it down!

4. The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster

Published in 1961, The Phantom Tollbooth is still one of the best books for young adults and language learners.

The novel follows Milo, a young boy who goes on a fantasy adventure after receiving a mysterious package that contains a miniature tollbooth . He drives through the tollbooth in his toy car and finds himself in magical places where he meets all kinds of strange characters.

The text is littered with puns and wordplay, which make the book even more fun – and a great opportunity for language learners to practise their skills.

5. Wonder by R. J. Palacio

Wonder tells the story of August “Auggie” Pullman, a home-schooled fifth-grader living in Manhattan. He has a medical condition that has left his face disfigured . At the start of the novel, his parents decide to enrol him into a private middle school for the first time ever.

Throughout the school year, Auggie faces many challenges because of his appearance. He’s often bullied and beaten by other kids. Against all odds , the kind and courageous little boy manages to make friends.

Wonder made the New York Times bestseller list and was adapted into a hit movie starring Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson as Auggie’s parents and Jacob Tremblay as Auggie.

6. Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi

Persepolis is a graphic novel by Marjane Satrapi. It uses a combination of drawings and text to tell the story of her childhood in Iran during the Islamic Revolution.

The novel begins in 1980 and focuses on the impact of war and extremist religious ideology on Iranian people, especially women. Marji witnesses unspeakable atrocities that change her life forever.

Persepolis was originally published in French and later translated into many languages, reaching worldwide audiences. It’s an easy read in terms of language, but difficult in terms of the subject matter.

The graphic novel was made into a beautiful and critically acclaimed adult animated film in 2007. The good news? You can watch it in Barcelona on the 12th of March in the Palacio Nacional de Montjuïc. Click here for more details!

7. Danny, the Champion of the World by Roald Dahl

A book that has had an impact on more than one generation of young adults, Roald Dahl’s Danny was first published in 1975. It centres on a young boy living in an old caravan with his father.

When Danny discovers that his father is a skilled poacher , he decides to accompany him on a mission, his most ambitious one yet: capturing 120 pheasants by feeding them sleeping pills. Their mischievous plan leads to all kinds of complications involving a wealthy businessman, Mr Hazell. Will Danny and his father come out triumphant?

Everyone should read this refreshingly sincere and entertaining book once in their lifetime. What better way to practice your English skills?

The 11 Best Sites for Finding What Books to Read Next

Microsoft Can't Make Copilot Succeed Without Convincing Windows 10 Users

4 free methods to remove watermarks from pdfs, ai travel scams to watch out for this summer.

Trying to find good books to read during your commute or planning out your summer reading early? There is nothing more daunting than going to a bookstore without a shopping list. So, make sure that your next read is going to be a good one.

There are plenty of sites you can use to look up books based on your personal taste, favorite authors and titles, or even based on a specific plot summary or character.

Whether user-generated, based on recommendations, or using a book recommendation search engine, there are a variety of ways that these sites are going to answer the question: what should I read next?

gnooks website

Gnooks is probably the simplest of these sites to use. You can enter up to three author's names, and Gnooks will recommend another author you might like.

The interface is clean and distraction-free, but if you want to find out more about the recommended authors, you'll have to take your search elsewhere.

The only other feature on Gnooks is the option to make one of three selections: I like it , I don't like it , and I don't know . Making these selections probably helps Gnooks algorithm improve.

2. Goodreads

goodreads book screenshot

You should already be familiar with this book community. Goodreads is packed with features that go beyond book recommendations. You will have to sign up for an account to use the site's book recommendations.

There are several ways to discover books using Goodreads . You can search for a title, and you'll see a list of other titles users also enjoyed. If you sign up for a free Goodreads account and rate books that you've read, the site can also offer up recommendations based on your reading history.

In addition to these features, given that Goodreads is a social network, you can also scan the reading lists of other users and friends to find book recommendations.

Some users have also created themed lists which you can use to discover your next read. You can either search for titles you enjoyed and see which lists they appear on, and find other titles you might like.

goodreads list screenshot

For example, searching for The Alexandria Quartet is featured on a variety of lists such as best post World War II fiction, alongside other greats such as Catch 22. But then it also does wind up on a list of best books ever, alongside Twilight.

Goodreads isn't the only site that you can use to catalog your book collection and also benefit from the community's wisdom on what to read next. LibraryThing is another good example.

3. What Should I Read Next?

whatshouldireadnext website screenshot

What Should I Read Next? (WSIRN) is a book recommendation search engine. It asks you to enter your favorite book and suggests similar books that you might find interesting. It also lets you browse books by subject.

WSIRN asks users to create reading lists of their favorite books. Thanks to these reading lists and its algorithm, it can understand which books are related to each other.

You can also add books to three default lists: books you liked, books you disliked, books you want to read. This will not only help the algorithm to improve, but you'll get better recommendations. Besides these three lists, you can create custom ones and make your lists private. WSIRN has a Quotes section as well, where you can discover new writers and read relevant quotations.

litsy website

Unlike most other sites listed here, Litsy doesn't rely on an algorithm. Instead, it relies entirely on its user base for this information. Though you can search for books without signing up, creating a Litsy account gives you access to more features. You can search for books, read reviews, add friends, create posts, and of course find your next read.

Once you've signed up, you'll get a list of users it recommends following. You can also search for other users to follow by searching for your favorite books and seeing who else has left reviews for them. When you want to recommend books for other users, you can't just give the book a thumbs up; you have to leave a short review.

And that's how you're going to find your recommendations—by seeing what other Litsy users are reading. Users post photos of the book (or screenshots of the ebook), along with their reviews.

To find a good book to read, you'll probably want to go directly to the profile of someone who has read other books you've enjoyed and also given them a ringing endorsement. Moreover, Litsy has a mobile application for recommending books .

5. AllReaders.com

allreader screenshot

AllReaders.com is another no-frills website without much of a UI to speak of, but it's a great option for those of you who are fans of thrillers. With AllReader.com's advanced search function, you can search for books based on plot, setting or even details about the protagonists. Titles are also accompanied by a plot summary, as well as setting and character information.

Plots or themes include a variety of thrillers, horror, and adventure—so this feature won't be wildly useful if you're looking for something a little more literary.

You can also select the era in which the story is set, the characteristics of the protagonist and the antagonist, the setting, and the book's writing style. Besides the advanced search, it has an option for searching books by title or author.

amazon customer who bought this

Amazon should be an obvious option for searching book recommendations. You can find similar titles for any book since the search result is accompanied by a Customers who bought this item also bought list.

While Amazon uses this feature primarily to get you to buy more stuff, you can also take a look at the recommendations for items that are frequently bought together:

amazon frequently bought together screenshot

And, don't forget that Amazon is also home to the Kindle and its massive reading community too.

7. TasteDive

tastedive screenshot

TasteDive (formerly TasteKid) is a great site for both book and author recommendations, along with other forms of entertainment. Just enter the title of your favorite book or your favorite author, and TasteDive will generate its recommendations.

TasteDive isn't only about book recommendations. You can also use it for music, movies and TV shows. By the same token, you can find recommended books based on other books, as well as based on authors, TV shows, movies, music, and more.

While TasteDive's recommendations are often pretty accurate, searching for recommendations based on newer titles or more obscure authors won't yield any results.

8. Whichbook

whichbook website

Whichbook is another site that offers up suggestions based on specific characteristics rather than similar books - you can make your choices based on the mood of the book, using a series of sliders: Happy to Sad, Funny to Serious, Safe to Disturbing, and so forth.

Drag up to four sliders around to make your selection for each characteristic of the book, and Whichbook will offer up a long list of recommendations. You can also opt for making your selection based on specifics regarding character, plot, and setting. Additionally, you can find books by country and browse through bestsellers.

bookbub screenshot

BookBub is worth a look for its handpicked recommendations. You can also save yourself some money with discounts on books they think you'll want to read.

When you first sign up, BookBub will ask you some questions on what kinds of recommendations you want (updates from authors you love, recommendations from people you trust, info on discounts etc.), and of course information on the genres of books you like.

You can also follow your favorite authors, and in some cases (like Margaret Atwood for example), you'll get recommendations straight from them. In addition to recommendations for people you follow and auto-generated lists, the editors' picks is a great way to discover new titles in your favorite genres.

10. Olmenta

olmenta screenshot

Use Olmenta for random finds if you love to be surprised. The site is simple: you can select books based on nine genres including poetry, children's books, and business.

There are no signups, no algorithms, and no real explanation as to how the books end up on the list, except for a link to recommend books via Twitter to the brains behind the operation.

subreddit books screenshot

The Subreddits /r/Books and /r/BookSuggestions are a good place to go to find other like-minded people on the hunt for a good read. You can search the previous threads, or create a post yourself asking for suggestions if you're looking for something in particular.

/r/Books also has a book recommendations tab, where you'll find a weekly recommendation thread . Here, you can request suggestions and can help out other readers with suggestions of your own.

Decluttering? 10 Great Ways to Get Rid of Unwanted Books

Give your used books new life by donating, swapping or selling them. here’s how.

Maria Speidel,

a box of used books

There are countless used books gathering dust on shelves and nightstands or moldering in attics and basements across the country. You probably have your own stacks of long-ignored books — from novels you’re not likely to read again to gifted books you know you’ll never open.

Why not do a little decluttering , while getting those books into the hands of someone who’d enjoy them? There are many places to donate or sell used books; which ones you choose will depend on how much effort you want to put into the task. Options, described below, range from slipping your last-read novel into your neighbor’s Little Free Library to starting a (probably not super-lucrative) bookselling side hustle.

A few things to consider: First, recycle, rather than donate, damaged books. Second, always check donation guidelines. Some places take everything, while others may eschew certain categories, such as textbooks, yearbooks, dictionaries and encyclopedias.

free little library

1. Little Free Libraries

In all 50 states, volunteers have erected thousands of these house-shaped, front-yard kiosks (here’s a locator ) which operate on a “ take a book, share a book ” principle. Likewise, keep your eyes peeled for tables and shelves at coffee shops, bars, gyms and community centers that serve the same purpose. These are great places to offload a few books at a time — and maybe find a new one.

2. Giveaway websites

Sign up online for a local Freecycle or Buy Nothing group (online or through an app); list your books, and your neighbors may come take them away. I’ve given away a barely used SAT prep book and picked up some fabulous cookbooks using Buy Nothing, which is active on Facebook. Pro tip: On Buy Nothing, givers can request that receivers “take everything” and regift as they see fit.

3. Hospitals, schools and other receptive institutions

Reach out to children’s hospitals, schools, theaters (old hardbacks make great props!) and assisted living facilities to see if your stash fits their needs. Donating locally funnels your used book’s value directly into your community and maintains a low carbon footprint, says Tom Matthews, a Cleveland marketing executive who created the website localbookdonations.com  to help folks all over the country find donation sites in their area.

4. Book donation drop boxes

Better World Books maintains big metal Green Book Donation boxes in parking lots in more than a dozen states. It resells the donations online and vows to donate one book to a nonprofit for every book sold. The company recycles remainders. Individual libraries and other organizations also run collection boxes.

5. Book swaps

Gather friends or neighbors and ask everyone to bring a book, or books, and trade. Make your own rules — or try the Yankee Swap method where participants draw numbers to determine picking order. In January, the Boston Public Library had a two-hour swap. Patrons came and went, dropping off books that may have been unwanted holiday gifts and taking something more their speed. For this type of large-scale event, Veronica Koven-Matasy, a reader services supervisor at the library, recommends “salting” the donation pile with desirable volumes and designating a charity for remainders.

$20 off a Walmart+ annual membership

6. Libraries

Many public libraries accept donations and provide a receipt for tax write-offs. The books might go into the collection or be sold by a Friends of the Library group. The Friends of the Studio City Library runs a popular monthly sale at that busy branch of the Los Angeles Public Library, for example, with books priced to move at around 50 cents for paperbacks and up to $4 for deluxe coffee table books. “All our proceeds go back to the library to fund their programs or to buy extra books,” said Friends Treasurer Albert Ang, a financial consultant. The leftovers are passed on to other charities.

7. Other nonprofits/charities

Nonprofits, from the tiniest church-run shop to major players like the Salvation Army, Goodwill and Vietnam Vets, want your books. In certain areas they may even send a truck to your house and cart them away, ideal for major clear-outs. The hauling service Pick Up Please, which coordinates with nonprofits, is a popular vehicle for this. Check with your favorite charity or pickupplease.org to see if your area is served. (Remember to get a receipt for taxes.)

Donated books, and other media like CDs, are the stars at stand-alone Goodwill bookstores. “We try to give every book a chance,” says Christian Reese, the manager at the Goodwill Bookstore in Tupelo, Mississippi, where most books sell for $4 and under, and the drive-through drop-off center is not picky. Reese says she would rather sort through a huge bag of donations than lose out on a treasure. (Goodwill donations are sold online, too, at GoodwillBooks.com .)

The Savers thrift store chain also takes books, and a portion of the proceeds go to designated nonprofits.

8. Donations by mail

You can mail books to nonprofits that collect them for those who cannot easily access books. OperationPaperback.org sends books to troops abroad, including kids’ books for deployed parents to read remotely to their children. There are also Prisonbookprogram.org, which serves the incarcerated nationwide, and Books for Africa.

9. Secondhand bookstores

Find out if a nearby used bookstore is accepting donations or buying books. Some will pay cash or give store credit, but they’re likely to pay only a small percentage of the prices listed on Amazon and eBay. Since the great COVID clean-out, when everyone was at home and decluttering, many have a backlog. “We were bombarded,” says bookseller Lisa Morton of The Iliad in North Hollywood, California, which still takes loads of donations — 20 to 30 boxes a day. What doesn’t get sold is put outside for pickers.

Los Angeles’ The Last Bookstore, Instagram famous for its oft-photographed book arch, is among the stores that will send a truck for donated books through Re-Bookit! The books are sold at its store or given to libraries and schools.

10. Book-sale apps and websites

Online book resale sites have mushroomed — there are so many that at least one website, Bookscouter.com , is devoted to assisting sellers by ranking what online buyers will pay for a used book on different sites. (Spoiler: It’s typically pennies on the dollar.) Players include Powell’s Books , the venerable Portland, Oregon, bookseller, and Thriftbooks.com . You scan or enter a book’s ISBN barcode with your phone or computer, then follow the highest bidder’s mailing directions. Obviously, these systems work best for books published after the early 1970s, when books started having International Standard Book Numbers, ISBNs. (The number is on a barcode on the back of the book or on the copyright page.)

If you have a first edition that you think may have real value, check out websites like AbeBooks , AddALL and Biblio to get an idea of your treasure’s worth. The Rare Books and Manuscripts Section (RBMS) of the Association of College and Research Libraries also has info on the value of certain kinds of books.

Major e-retailers like Amazon, eBay and Etsy are where an individual seller will get the highest, retail-level price for any used books, but selling this way is very time consuming. You need to open a shop on the site; photograph and write detailed descriptions of each book; monitor sales; and mail books. Platforms take a percentage: eBay, 14.95 percent; Amazon, 15 percent; Etsy, 6.5 percent, and books must be vintage. Abebooks.com takes 8 percent and charges a monthly fee of $25 and up based on how many books you list for sale.

Another option is to list books for sale and local pickup on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist.

Still have some books you're pretty sure nobody wants? The wonderful Playing With Books: The Art of Upcycling, Deconstructing, and Reimagining the Book will show you ways to turn your book into a work of art. You can find used copies online for less than $6.

Maria Speidel is a writer who lives in Los Angleles with a houseful of books.

Editorial Reviews

Praise for Help Me!

"Equal parts touching and hilarious, Power's account of the year she spent following the tenets of self-help books will make you feel better about your own flawed life."-- PEOPLE

"Marianne Power had me at hello. I'd only read a few pages of her blog-turned-memoir, Help Me! , and I was already all in.... wry, cheeky... reads like a novel, with full-color recurring characters, including love interests, an increasingly exasperated roommate and Power's pragmatic, farm-raised mom always ready with a one-liner. "You're not going to go all American, are you?" she asks Power at the start of her experiment. "You know . . . happy."...Bridget Jones does self-help."-- RACHEL ROSENBLIT, WASHINGTON POST

"Self-help is a huge industry-but does it actually work? Journalist Marianne Power decided to find out....With the rollicking, easy-to-read voice of a Sophie Kinsella or Bridget Jones novel, this book showcases how complicated the notion of changing your life actually is--and questions some of the inherent problems with self-help in the first place, while recognizing its very real ability to transform one's life. It also acts as a sampler platter of self-help books that are actually worth your time. If you're looking to make changes in the new years and wondering where to begin, this is a great jump-start."-- MIND BODY GREEN, Best Books of January

"London-based journalist Power chronicles the harrowing, often side-splitting adventures she embarked on while pursuing happiness and inner peace... Throughout this consistently entertaining book, she writes with unflinching honesty--and bald hilarity, especially as she encountered deadpan reality checks from her mother, sisters, and skeptical friends--about the throes of facing her fears, tackling money issues, living in the present, opening herself up to rejection, and getting over her hang-ups with men...A winner. Bridget Jones meets Buddha in this plucky, heartwarming, comical debut memoir." - Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

"Some of her plights are hilarious; others are almost unbearably poignant. Self-help seekers will be moved and entertained by Power's over-the-top exploits." - Booklist (starred review)

"In this frank, funny, and occasionally heartbreaking debut, journalist Power ably lays bare her yearlong quest to live by the tenets of a different self-help book every month... Already a bestseller in Power's native England, the book will surely find a welcoming American readership. Power's total honesty and openness will make readers realize that, at heart, everyone has similar secret fears and insecurities." - Publishers Weekly

"A sweet sharp read, and the last chapter made me cry. As someone a bit dubious of self-help books, it's perfect: Power spends a year trying to live a month per book. It's quite a fun journey through the ups and downs of negotiating ourselves through life, but underneath that is a serious, generous message, and it really does feel like you've learned something by the end of it."-- Jessie Burton, author of The Miniaturist

"Couldn't put this book down - Marianne's honesty and wit shone through. There's something everyone can relate to, whether or not you like self-help - just a hugely enjoyable, fantastic read."-- Poorna Bell, author of Chase the Rainbow

"Sublime and ridiculous, in equal measure. I tore though it hungrily. One minute I was having an existential epiphany, the next I was honking with laughter. Britain's answer to Sarah Knight, with Amy Schumer's naked hilarity and Matt Haig's soul-deep profundity chucked in."-- Catherine Gray, author of The Unexpected Joy of Being Sober

"Marianne's writing makes me smile and has moved me to tears more than once. She combines a journalist's no-nonsense investigative skills with a tenderness and honesty that sets her apart... Her writing has been a starting point for so many conversations that brought me closer to friends I thought I knew intimately...In helping herself, it turned out that Marianne was helping all of us."-- Erin Kelly, author of He Said / She Said

"A laugh-out-loud funny book that also manages to be thought-provoking, perceptive and devastatingly honest. I loved it."-- Lucy Diamond, author of Summer at Shell Cottage

"Sparkling . . . a laugh-out-loud odyssey, with embarrassing incidents and downright disasters aplenty. But the real triumph of the book is the way it transcends its "Bridget Jones gazes at her navel" premise to ask searching questions both about the purported effectiveness of self-help in the light of a multi-million dollar personal development industry; and about how we can really best find contentment. If you've ever worried that self-help might be a euphemism for self-obsession, then this is a book for you."-- Bookseller "Power is such an engaging writer, it's hard not to empathise with what she's saying . . . Plus, she's very funny . . . Marianne Power is a delightful companion and one who (putting all natural misanthropy aside) acts a powerful reminder that the traditional ways of denigrating or demanding too much of ourselves ain't going to get us anywhere . . . excellent."-- Emerald Street "Funny and fearless, I loved Help Me! almost as much as I loved Marianne's mum who was always on hand with some no-nonsense advice and really needs to write her own self-help book."-- Red Magazine

Don't break the bank with your reading habit: Where to buy cheap books near you

Have you caught the reading bug from BookTok ? Looking to check out a viral series ? Getting into reading is all fun and games until you realize new releases can run you about $30 a hardcover.

But you don’t have to ask for a raise to finance your reading habits – there are many online platforms dedicated to making reading an accessible and even free experience. Libraries are a go-to, but there are also options for those who want to own a physical copy to build up their bookshelf.

Where to buy cheap books

The art of low-cost book buying lies in the unexpected gems. You might find a book you’ve been dying to read with a cover that's a little worse for wear or a cheap read you’ve never heard of. Searching for inexpensive books can be a great way to expand your reading palate.

Get into the habit of checking out sale sections as well. Many bookstores have a discount table or sell used books for only a few dollars.

Buy cheap books online

While you can find cheap, used books on Amazon or eBay, you may also have luck at e-commerce platforms that specialize in low-cost books. Check out one of these sites to make your next read a steal:

  • ThriftBooks
  • Better World Books
  • Half Price Books
  • Awesome Books
  • Book Outlet

Swap books with another reader

Why not kill two birds with one stone? You can donate a book and get a new one with a trusty book swap, either through friends or at an online retailer like Paperback Swap or Book Mooch .

Check for local sales

Some libraries raise funds by selling second-hand books. Find the closest public library to you using this U.S. map created with data from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and ask your librarian if they have a "for sale" table.

Independent bookstores may let you trade your old books for store credit that you can use to snag a new one. Thrift stores and consignment shops also typically sell used books.

Another place to scour is Facebook Marketplace. You never know who is doing a closet cleanout and wants to get rid of their old books for a few dollars.

How to read books for free

You don’t have to shell out any money to become well-read – a library card is all you need to unlock a world of literature. Start by visiting your local library . You typically only need proof of address to apply for a library card.

Little Free Library’s take-a-book, leave-a-book model is also a great place for finding new free books. These outdoor pop-up hutches are all over the country. Check out Little Free Library’s map of registered libraries across the U.S. to find one near you.

You can also try e-reading. The Libby app lets readers borrow e-books, digital audiobooks and magazines with your library card.

Audiobooks are another low-cost way to access books and popular platforms like Audible , Libro.fm , B&N Audiobooks and Audiobooks.com let you listen at your leisure with a monthly subscription fee. Spotify recently unveiled a new audiobook program as well where eligible Spotify premium subscribers can enjoy 15 hours of monthly listening from over 200,000 audiobooks.

Where to donate books

You can donate books at many of the same locations where you purchase or borrow them, like libraries, donation centers, bookstores and community centers. If you’re doing some spring cleaning, check out USA TODAY’s comprehensive guide to donating and selling your books .

Cozy mysteries: Why comforting crime is your next favorite genre

Real 'Mom and Dad's Swinger Party' Book for Kids?

The book was published by a canadian-based author, comedian and youtuber., nick hardinges, published june 25, 2024.

Labeled Satire

About this rating

This "children's book" really exists, but its content was satirical and it was written and published for adults, not children.

On June 24, 2024, an X user posted a video of a woman reading aloud a purported kids' book titled "Mom and Dad's Swinger Party" and suggested the publication proved the queer community is "filled with pedophiles."

Other X users replying to the clip appeared to believe the title was a legitimate children's book , with one writing : "This is disgusting. What would possess someone to write and publish this?"

Similar posts appeared elsewhere on X  in June 2024, with one captioned : "They're going after the kids."

Together, they had amassed more than 640,000 views at the time of this writing.

The claim also appeared in numerous X posts in June 2023, where one user wrote : "Unreal. This is a "childrens" book explaining "Mom & Dad's Swinger Parties". If this isn't grooming a child into adult perversions…I don't know what is. It's probably available at your local school library!"

However, the book was created by Brad Gosse , a comedian, author and YouTuber based in Toronto, Canada, who writes satirical, "dark humor" books in the style of kids' books.

The last page of the publication was shown in the video, where it stated the content was satirical, as follows:

I have over 100 humor books and several strange coloring books available on Amazon. My humor books cover a wide range of topics and styles, from dumb jokes and puns to satirical takes on current events. Whatever your sense of humor, you'll find something to love or hate in my collection.

books help me

Gosse's website contained more than 120 children's-style books. It stated: "He loves to entertain people whether it be through his jokes or his books. He started publishing his 'children's books' in 2019. He has published over 120 dark humor books so far."

He also branded himself a "professional troll" in his X bio , where he said: "If you're triggered I'm thrilled."

The video being shared online in June 2024 was originally posted by TikTok user @jenjenivivereads, whose caption read: "Ive [sic] edited this post to say that this is an ADULTS parody book. Because the level of hate im [sic] getting right now is ridiculous."

Some X users who shared the clip in June 2024 later added they had discovered the book was satirical.
