• How to customize your iPhone’s app icons

By creating your own icons from photos or other art, you can add your individual style to your homepage.

Sometimes an app’s icon just doesn’t look right on your homescreen. For example, let’s say — just for the sake of argument — that the icon for a social networking app was switched from a pretty blue bird to a rather stark “X.” Could you change that icon?

The answer is yes — it’s doable using Apple’s built-in Shortcuts app. You actually won’t be replacing the app’s official icon. Rather, you’ll be creating a separate shortcut that leads to the app. It’s a tedious and time-consuming process, but in the end, you can have a fully customized iPhone homescreen.

Here’s how you do it:

  • Before you begin, it’s a good idea to find an icon for your new shortcut. There are a bunch of icon sources online ( Flaticon , for example), or if you’re artistic and / or ambitious, you can create your own. Whether you use someone else’s or your own, it’s easiest to save the image to Photos.
  • Okay, let’s begin. Find and tap on the Shortcuts app. It’s pre-installed; if you can’t see it immediately on your homescreen, swipe left until you’re at the App Library and start typing “Shortcuts” into the top search bar.
  • Once you’re in the app, tap on the plus sign in the upper-right corner.
  • On the top of the screen, you’ll see that your new shortcut will be named something like “New Shortcut 1.” If you’d rather have your own name, tap on the arrow next to it and select Rename .

Shortcut can help you create new bookmarks for your apps

  • Once you’ve got your shortcut named, tap on the Add Action button below the name.
  • You’ll find yourself on a page that, at first glance, may seem a bit confusing. Basically, you’re looking at all the various things that you can do with Shortcuts. While it would be worth it to spend some time here and try out some customizations, right now, what we want to do is change your app icon.

Page to create actions for a new shortcut.

  • Type Open app in the search bar and then tap on the Open App link that will show up.
  • Tap on the word App that appears (rather faintly) next to the word Open in the search bar.

Typing “Open” in the top search page, with scripting and voice memo actions appearing.

  • You’ll see a list of your phone’s apps; pick the one you want to customize. The name of the app will now be next to the word Open .
  • If you are using iOS 16, tap Done in the upper-right corner. You’ll be taken back to your shortcut page. (If you’re using the iOS 17 public beta, you can go directly to the next step.)
  • Select the information icon (an “i” in a circle) at the bottom of the screen.
  • Tap Add to Home Screen .

The name of an app in blue next to Open.

  • You’ll now see a preview of the icon (which will be a standard, uninteresting icon that Shortcuts automatically adds). Don’t worry — we’re going to make it better.
  • Tap on the icon under Home Screen Name and Icon . You’ll have the choice of either taking a photo, choosing a photo, or choosing a file. Assuming you’ve already saved an image in Photo, tap on Choose Photo and select the photo you want to use.
  • If you’ve chosen an existing photo, a highlighted area will indicate what part of the photo will appear as an icon; you can move the photo around until you’re happy with the section indicated. Tap Choose in the lower-right corner.

Drop down menu from shortcut icon on creation page.

  • Now, you’ll see your new icon. If you haven’t added a name for your new shortcut, you can still do it here by typing the name next to the icon.
  • All ready? Tap Add in the upper right corner.
  • You should see your new customized icon on your homescreen. Congrats!

Final icon in shortcut making app.

You can also hide the original app icon so you’ll just have the new one visible. (You don’t want to delete it completely, of course; that would delete the app.)

  • Long-press on your wallpaper until all your icons start wiggling. Tap on the minus sign of the app you want to hide.
  • On the pop-up menu, tap Remove from Home Screen . The original icon won’t be deleted, just hidden; you can always find it in the App Library.

Home page with icons with minus signs.

One note: when you use your new icon to go to the app, you will occasionally get a small drop-down notice that tells you what the original app is called and reminds you of the fact that it is a shortcut. But the drop-down will only last for a second or two, so it shouldn’t be much of a bother.

How-To Geek

How to use custom app icons on your iphone and ipad.

Tired of seeing the same default app icons on your iPhone or iPad? Using this trick, you can change them to anything you like!

Quick Links

How does it work, preparing a replacement icon image, "replace" iphone and ipad app icons with custom designs.

If you're tired of seeing the same old app icons on your iPhone or iPad home screen, you can customize their look by creating new ones and "replacing" them. The trick is possible using Apple's  Shortcuts  app, which allows you to use any image as an icon.

Currently, it's not possible to truly replace an app's icon on an iPhone or iPad. Instead, you can achieve a similar result by using the Shortcuts app. We'll be creating a custom shortcut that opens an app and then using a custom image as its icon on the home screen.

This technique has been possible since the introduction of Shortcuts in iOS 12 , but it became popular following the release of  iOS 14 , which allows you to officially hide home screen icons in your App Library .

iPhone owners running iOS 12 or iOS 13---or iPad owners with iPadOS 12 or 13---can do this same trick and place the original icons they don't want to see in folders to tuck them out of the way .

Before we begin, you'll need to decide which app icon you're replacing, and you'll need to locate or create the image you'd like to replace it with.

The ideal replacement icon will be a perfectly square image of about 512 x 512 pixels in size, although you'll have the opportunity to crop any image to a square shape in the steps ahead. For this example, we've created a simple purple mail icon in an image editor by using a simple envelope outline.

For your custom icon, you can use any image or photo you'd like as long as it's in your device's photo library. Try searching Google for custom icon designs and saving them, or you can draw your own icon and transfer it to your iPhone or iPad using AirDrop .

First, open the "Shortcuts" app. If you don't see it on your home screen, swipe downward with one finger in the middle of your screen to open Spotlight search . Type "shortcuts" into the search bar that appears and then tap the "Shortcuts" icon.

In the Shortcuts app, if you see the "Shortcuts" overview screen, tap the "My Shortcuts" tab and then select "All Shortcuts."

On the "All Shortcuts" page, tap the "+" button.

Next, you'll see a "New Shortcut" page where you add the steps to the automation, sort of like a computer program. We're going to add a single step that opens an app. Tap the "Add Action" button.

When the actions panel appears, choose the "Scripting" option.

In the "Scripting" panel, select "Open App."

Back on the new shortcut page, locate the box for the "Open App" action. Tap "Choose."

In the "Choose App" panel that appears, select the search bar and type the name of the app you'd like to launch when you tap your custom icon. Then tap the app's name in the results list. You can choose any app on your iPhone or iPad.

Next, tap the three-dot menu button in the top-right corner. On an iPad, these dots are at the very top-center of the screen beside the "New Shortcut" name.

A "Details" panel will appear. First, tap "Shortcut Name" and name the shortcut anything you'd like, so it will be labeled properly in the Shortcuts app. Then tap "Add to Home Screen."

In the panel that pops up, locate the "Home Screen Name and Icon" section. Select the placeholder icon to the left of "New Shortcut."

In the context menu that pops up, select "Choose Photo."

Using the photo selection panel that appears, locate and choose the photo in your library you'd like to use as your new custom app icon. After you select it, you'll have a chance to crop it to fit the square ratio of a standard app icon.

After that, tap the "New Shortcut" name. Enter the label you'd like to use for the icon on your home screen. Ideally, this will be the name of the app icon you're replacing, such as "Safari" or "Mail."

Finally, tap the "Add" button and your shortcut will be added to your home screen.

Once the custom icon is on your home screen, you can move the app icon wherever you like, including the Dock. To run the app, tap the shortcut icon you just created.

If you'd like to hide the original app icon (and you're running iOS 14 or later), enter Jiggle mode by pressing and holding a blank area of your home screen and then move the icon to your App Library .

If you're running iOS 12 or iOS 13, or using an iPad (which does not have an App Library), you can "hide" the original app icon by moving it to a folder that you can place on a different screen.

Related: How to Move iPhone Apps From a Home Screen to the App Library

The only downside of this technique is that when launching an app through your shortcut, you first make a quick detour through the Shortcuts app before the actual app appears. At the moment, this is a necessary drawback, but the behavior may change in a future update. Have fun customizing your device!

The Themes app offers the usual categories of themes like Minimalist, Cartoon, and Nature. But you’ll also come across more unique ones that aren’t available in some other apps in this list, such as Architecture, Subjects, and Cyberpunk.

If you don’t want to overhaul your entire iPhone's Home Screen, you can opt to download a theme’s custom icon pack, widgets, and wallpapers separately.

3. App Icons

App Icons is a straightforward, easy-to-use app for a quick Home Screen change. From nature-inspired styles to minimalist black-and-white options, scroll along the app’s horizontal belt of themes to find one that is ready to install. You get some of the iPhone themes for free, while others need to be purchased.

The app also has a selection of Live Wallpapers, sorted into categories such as Water, Cities, Fire, and Landscapes. For more wallpaper options, you can check out these great places to get iPhone wallpapers .

2. Icon Themer

Icon Themer’s curation of themes includes mostly festive-related stylistic hand drawings and solid color shades. Most of them give a sweet, calm vibe. It has fewer theme options than popular apps like Brass or ScreenKit. However, if you hate filtering through an avalanche of striking color themes just to find that one simple, clean-looking design, then Icon Themer is a good app for you.

The app offers both paid and free iPhone themes. But if you aren’t quite satisfied with the ready-made ones, it also has a large collection of icons for you to create your own.

1. WidgetBox

Like Icon Themer, the appeal of WidgetBox is that it doesn’t overwhelm you with endless choices. The app offers around 10 classic themes, such as Dark, White, Retro, and monochromatic options, like Yellow. You can also create your own widgets.

The designs offered are clean and simple, so they should match any iPhone wallpaper you have easily. You can also get custom keyboards and change your iPhone charging animation using WidgetBox.

Customize Your iPhone's Home Screen With Ease

Whether you’re looking for widgets, app icons, or a full theme makeover, these iPhone customization apps are a fun way to showcase your personality on your Home Screen. With so many high-quality apps to choose from, you’re sure to find a free iPhone theme that suits your style.

Excluding Widgetsmith, which allows lots of customization options, the other apps listed here generally offer an easy, one-tap installation process. You simply need to choose the theme you want and check that the app icons match accordingly.

The Best iPhone Cases

An iPhone with a blue case resting face down.

By Haley Perry and Roderick Scott

A good case is a wise investment for your iPhone. Even the least expensive iPhone is pricey, and the right case offers protection against scratches, dings, and cracks and allows you to personalize your phone, often without adding much bulk or changing how you use your device.

Whether you’re looking for a case to conveniently attach to various accessories throughout your day or seeking the most protection possible, we’ve tested hundreds of iPhone cases and can recommend the right one to fit your needs.

The research

Best basic case for any iphone: smartish gripmunk, best leather cases: apple leather case and mujjo full leather case, best wallet case for all iphones: smartish wallet slayer vol. 1, best clear cases for all iphones: spigen ultra hybrid magfit, smartish gripmunk nothin’ to hide, and spigen liquid crystal, protective cases we recommend: smartish gripzilla, speck presidio pro, and speck presidio grip, the thinnest cases we recommend: caudabe veil and caudabe the sheath, best accessory-friendly cases: peak design everyday, moment, and quad lock.

An iPhone with a blue case resting face down.

  • Smartish Gripmunk with MagSafe for iPhone 15 , 15 Plus , 15 Pro , 15 Pro Max
  • Smartish Gripmunk with MagSafe for iPhone 14 , 14 Plus , 14 Pro , 14 Pro Max
  • Smartish Gripmunk with MagSafe for iPhone 13 , 13 mini , 13 Pro , 13 Pro Max
  • Smartish Gripmunk for iPhone 12 , 12 mini , 12 Pro , 12 Pro Max
  • Smartish Gripmunk for iPhone 11 Pro Max
  • Smartish Gripmunk for iPhone XS Max
  • Smartish Gripmunk for iPhone SE (3rd generation) , 8 , 8 Plus , 7 , 7 Plus

The Smartish Gripmunk is a reliable choice for anyone seeking a simple, durable, and protective case generally available for $10 to $15. It has been our favorite case for every iPhone model since the iPhone 7, and although it isn’t particularly flashy, it is dependable. The case is flexible enough to allow for an easy installation, but it won’t stretch out or pull off over time. It also offers finger grooves on the edges that help improve grip, plus excellent shock absorption. Though every accident is different, we’ve dropped iPhones wearing this case dozens of times and never damaged their bodies. You’re unlikely to find a case of this quality at a lower price.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

Visually, the Smartish Gripmunk isn’t the most exciting case out there, but Amazon offers a “secret menu” with a handful of patterns you can have printed on the back of the case; another alternative is to upload your own images or text on the Smartish website for more personalization. Note that the Gripmunk doesn’t protect against every impact—no case truly can—but if you want to be extra safe, check out our protective picks for every iPhone model .

The best leather case for iPhone 13, the Apple Leather Case with MagSafe, shown in a dark red leather.

  • Apple Leather Case with MagSafe for iPhone 14 , 14 Plus , 14 Pro , 14 Pro Max
  • Apple Leather Case with MagSafe for iPhone 13
  • Apple Leather Case with MagSafe for iPhone 12 , 12 mini , 12 Pro , 12 Pro Max
  • Apple Leather Case for iPhone 11 Pro , 11 Pro Max
  • Apple Leather Case for iPhone XS , XS Max
  • Apple Leather Case for iPhone SE (3rd generation) , 8 , 8 Plus , 7 , 7 Plus

For those who prefer the look and feel of leather, we’ve found Apple’s Leather Case to be notably better than those of any other brand we’ve tested over the years. It’s the thinnest, most attractive leather case available, and it offers as much protection as you could hope for from this style. The iPhone 12, 13, and 14 versions conveniently include MagSafe, and we love the color options for this case across all models. No leather case will last forever, but Apple’s material feels premium and provides a solid grip. Apple no longer makes this case, but you can still find it through third-party retailers for some iPhone models.

Among Wirecutter staffers, we’ve found that the lifespan of the Apple Leather Case is about one year. Around that time, the underlying plastic starts to show through, and what starts out as handsome weathering becomes ratty and torn up. Leather wears more obviously than plastic, so don’t expect this case to keep its day-one appearance for long. Apple also discloses that if you use MagSafe accessories with it, you will see slight imprints in the case over time.

An iPhone with a blue Mujjo Full Leather Case resting on its screen.

  • Mujjo Full Leather Case for iPhone 15 , 15 Plus , 15 Pro , 15 Pro Max
  • Mujjo Full Leather Case for iPhone 11

Because Apple doesn’t make leather cases anymore, we recommend the Mujjo Full Leather Case ; it isn’t quite as good as Apple’s Leather Case, but it is the best you’ll find for the iPhone 15 and iPhone 11. The Mujjo case’s design is extremely similar to that of the Apple case, with slightly rough but supple leather on the outside, microfiber on the inside, and an open bottom edge. It also has a matte finish that feels just as nice.

The button covers on the Mujjo Full Leather Case for the iPhone 11 are molded into the leather rather than inserted as metal accents, which makes the buttons feel squishier than we’d like. The leather can wear unevenly with time and heavy use or become discolored and scuffed, and a MagSafe charging puck can leave an imprint. Still, it’s a great case with a slim and understated look.

An iPhone with a purple floral Smartish Wallet Slayer Vol. 1 case resting on its screen.

  • Smartish Wallet Slayer Vol. 1 for iPhone 15 , 15 Plus , 15 Pro , 15 Pro Max
  • Smartish Wallet Slayer Vol. 1 for iPhone 14 , 14 Plus , 14 Pro , 14 Pro Max
  • Smartish Wallet Slayer Vol. 1 for iPhone 13 , 13 mini , 13 Pro , 13 Pro Max
  • Smartish Wallet Slayer Vol. 1 for iPhone 12 , 12 mini , 12 Pro , 12 Pro Max
  • Smartish Wallet Slayer Vol. 1 for iPhone 11 , 11 Pro , 11 Pro Max
  • Smartish Wallet Slayer Vol. 1 for iPhone XS Max
  • Smartish Wallet Slayer Vol. 1 for iPhone SE (3rd generation) , 8 , 8 Plus , 7 , 7 Plus

Anyone looking to combine their wallet with their iPhone should consider the Smartish Wallet Slayer Vol. 1 case. It does a great job of keeping your cards (up to three) protected and in place, and it can also accommodate some cash. The case’s molded plastic design fits well in the hand, and you don’t have to worry about it deforming over time—the Wallet Slayer maintains its shape and thickness no matter how full (or empty) it is.

The Smartish Wallet Slayer Vol. 1 is certainly as bulky as you might expect a wallet case to be, but we don’t think it feels overly thick. People with tighter pockets may want to consider something slimmer ; this case is also too thick to work with most Qi wireless chargers and MagSafe chargers.

Read more about the Smartish Wallet Slayer Vol. 1 in our full guide to the best cases for the iPhone 15 series .

An iPhone 15 with a Spigen Ultra Hybrid MagFit case resting flat on its screen.

  • Spigen Ultra Hybrid MagFit for iPhone 15 , 15 Plus , 15 Pro , 15 Pro Max

The Spigen Ultra Hybrid MagFit is a simple, clear case that gives you optimal protection with TPU borders and a frosted yet transparent hard-plastic back, along with strong MagSafe magnets and easily accessible buttons, including the Action button on the Pro models. Its raised camera bump and edges around the corners offer solid protection in a sleek profile. The feel of the case isn’t too slippery; it offers an adequate grip, as opposed to other clear cases we’ve tested.

Despite any number of claims of “anti-yellowing technology” we’ve seen from companies over the years, we’ve never found a clear case that doesn’t discolor to a noticeable degree after six to 12 months. We’ll keep an eye on this Spigen case to see if it can keep the yellow and grime at bay.

A closeup of the back camera of an iPhone 15 with a Smartish Gripmunk Nothin’ to Hide with MagSafe case.

  • Smartish Gripmunk Nothin’ to Hide with MagSafe for iPhone 14 , 14 Plus , 14 Pro , 14 Pro Max
  • Smartish Gripmunk Nothin’ to Hide with MagSafe for iPhone 13 , 13 mini , 13 Pro , 13 Pro Max

The iPhone 13 and 14 come in an array of striking body colors—such as pale pink, cherry red, and navy blue—but unfortunately, none of those shades are visible from the front. If you don’t want to cover up the bold color on the back of your new phone but still need the protection of a good case, the Nothin’ to Hide is a clear variant of our favorite basic case for iPhones. It’s identical in every way regarding size and design, but it’s made of hard plastic rather than the more rubber-like TPU of the basic Gripmunk.

Over time, every clear case will turn yellow to some degree, and the Nothin’ to Hide is no exception. We’ve seen claims of “anti-yellowing technology” over the years, but we’ve never found a transparent case that hasn’t become a bit grimy over time.

The Spigen Liquid Crystal, shown on a red iPhone 12.

  • Spigen Liquid Crystal for iPhone 12 , 12 mini , 12 Pro , 12 Pro Max
  • Spigen Liquid Crystal for iPhone 11 Pro , 11 Pro Max

For iPhones older than the 13 series, the Spigen Liquid Crystal has been our favorite transparent case for years. It’s simple and protective, and it has air pockets in the corners for drop protection. The inside is lined with small dots to prevent the water-like splotches that can appear when a case sticks to the phone’s glass back, and we like that fingerprints are less evident on the Liquid Crystal than on many other transparent cases.

Just like the Nothin’ to Hide, the Spigen Liquid Crystal will yellow over time. You may not notice the change in color until you compare your case directly with a brand-new one, and we think the Liquid Crystal is inexpensive enough to merit a replacement down the line. We used to recommend the Liquid Crystal for the iPhone 11, iPhone X, iPhone XS, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone 7 Plus, but the case has been discontinued for those models.

Read more about the Smartish Gripmunk Nothin’ to Hide and the Spigen Liquid Crystal in our full guides to the best cases for the iPhone 15 series , the iPhone 14 series , and the iPhone 13 series .

An iPhone 15 with a black Smartish Gripzilla with MagSafe case resting on its screen.

  • Smartish Gripzilla with MagSafe for iPhone 15 , 15 Plus , 15 Pro , 15 Pro Max
  • Smartish Gripzilla with MagSafe for iPhone 14 , 14 Plus , 14 Pro , 14 Pro Max
  • Smartish Gripzilla with MagSafe for iPhone 13 , 13 mini , 13 Pro , 13 Pro Max
  • Smartish Gripzilla for iPhone 12 , 12 mini , 12 Pro , 12 Pro Max

If you tend to drop your phone a lot—or you simply don’t want to take any risks when it comes to damage—the Smartish Gripzilla is the most protective case we recommend for the iPhone 12, 13, 14, and 15. Deep grooves molded into the sides provide better grip for those who are more prone to dropping their devices. Despite its thickness, pressing the buttons remains easy, and the case works with both Qi and MagSafe chargers. Though no case can guarantee a damage-free fall, the air pockets inside the Gripzilla’s raised corners and its soft rubber interior provide strong shock absorption.

The Smartish Gripzilla is bulky, though not unreasonably so. It makes the phone about 50% thicker, adding 0.125 inch to the overall size.

The Speck Presidio Pro for iPhone 11 shown in blue.

  • Speck Presidio Pro for iPhone 11 , 11 Pro , 11 Pro Max
  • Speck Presidio Pro for iPhone X , XS , XS Max

We love the Speck Presidio Pro for the iPhone 11 and iPhone X series because it holds up against drops better than most other cases that are bulkier and less attractive, and it’s reasonably priced. The Presidio Pro is built with a hard, matte-plastic exterior and lined with rubber. Shock-absorbent air pockets on the border help it provide more protection than thinner or more basic cases offer, though we still don’t recommend trying to test its limits on purpose.

The Speck Presidio Pro is not the most protective case available, but it’s our favorite because it’s slightly more stylish than bulkier cases from other companies yet still offers great defense against drops and other damage. If you’re looking for something truly bulletproof, consider a case from OtterBox or Urban Armor Gear.

Read more about the Smartish Gripzilla, the Speck Presidio Pro, and the Speck Presidio Grip in our full guides to the best cases for the iPhone 15 series , the iPhone 14 series , and the iPhone 13 series .

An iPhone 15 with a navy blue Caudabe Veil case resting face down on its screen.

  • Caudabe Veil for iPhone 15 , 15 Plus , 15 Pro , 15 Pro Max
  • Caudabe Veil for iPhone 14 , 14 Plus , 14 Pro , 14 Pro Max
  • Caudabe Veil for iPhone 13 , 13 mini , 13 Pro , 13 Pro Max
  • Caudabe Veil for iPhone 12 , 12 mini , 12 Pro , 12 Pro Max
  • Caudabe Veil for iPhone 11 , 11 Pro , 11 Pro Max

Typically, we advise looking for a case with some shock-absorbing qualities, but we also understand that some people are willing to sacrifice the extra protection in favor of a thin case. If you’re looking for the thinnest possible option for your iPhone 15, 14, 13, 12, or 11, we recommend the Caudabe Veil . It’s similar to most other cases in this category, with the same molded plastic exterior and absence of shock-absorbing air pockets or button covers. However, it stands out from the competition with its textured surface, which provides more grip compared with other cases that are totally smooth—and it doesn’t feel rough or uncomfortable to hold in any way.

As with any ultrathin phone case, the Caudabe Veil isn’t likely to save your phone from breaking if you drop it; the Veil provides a little grip and can prevent scratches on the phone’s rear glass, but you should proceed only if you accept the risks. The Veil also comes in only two colors, which is a more limited selection than we prefer.

The Caudabe The Sheath case on an iPhone.

  • Caudabe The Sheath for iPhone 15 , 15 Plus , 15 Pro , 15 Pro Max
  • Caudabe The Sheath for iPhone SE (3rd generation) , 8 , 8 Plus , 7 , 7 Plus

For the iPhone SE (3rd generation), the best superthin case is Caudabe’s The Sheath . It has both good coverage and an impressively thin build, and it offers a proper 1 mL lip around the phone’s screen. We also recommend this case for the iPhone 15 series.

The Sheath provides decent coverage, but like other superthin cases, it offers no real drop protection.

Read more about the Caudabe Veil and the Caudabe The Sheath in our full guides to the best cases for the iPhone 15 series , the iPhone 14 series , and the iPhone 13 series .

An iPhone with a gray Peak Design Everyday Case resting on its face.

  • Peak Design Everyday Case for iPhone 15 , 15 Plus , 15 Pro , 15 Pro Max
  • Peak Design Everyday Case for iPhone 14 , 14 Plus , 14 Pro , 14 Pro Max
  • Peak Design Everyday Case for iPhone 13 , 13 mini , 13 Pro , 13 Pro Max

If you want to swap accessories on the fly (or you think you might want to), Peak Design’s Everyday Case is a great option. It has a TPU border with small ridges along the inner edge that should help absorb damage from drops, a MagSafe-compatible magnet that works with all the MagSafe accessories we tested it with, and a mounting point on the back that securely grips all accessories in place. Some of these attachments include mounts for your car , motorcycle , and bike , as well as a tripod mounting system and a wallet . The connection is strong enough that we have zero concerns about anything unintentionally falling out of place, and the case itself isn’t even noticeably thicker than our basic case pick .

We don’t say this often, but there aren’t any flaws. This is a great case that performs well in every way we evaluate cases.

The Quad Lock Case for iPhone 12, shown against a green background.

  • Quad Lock Case for iPhone 13 , 13 mini , 13 Pro , 13 Pro Max , 12 , 12 mini , 12 Pro , 12 Pro Max , 11 , 11 Pro , 11 Pro Max , X , XS , XS Max , XR , SE (3rd generation) , 8 , 8 Plus , 7 , 7 Plus

The Quad Lock is the best case you can buy if you enjoy using your iPhone while running or cycling, or if you need to position your phone for driving directions. The case’s sleek and clever design features an attachment mount on the back that can connect to a vast amount of accessories, including the Quad Lock Sports Armband , Car Mount , Bike Mount , Home/Office Desk Mount , and Tripod Adapter . If you use these types of accessories on a regular basis, the Quad Lock offers great protection without adding an unwieldy amount of bulk. Though some of its competitors are less expensive, we think the wider variety of mounts and accessories makes the Quad Lock worth the price.

Unfortunately, the Quad Lock is available only in black, and the thickness of the case can cause it to interfere with Qi wireless chargers and MagSafe chargers. The company sells a Wireless Charging Head for those who encounter issues, but it is expensive.

Read more about the Peak Design Everyday and the Quad Lock in our full guides to the best cases for the iPhone 15 series , the iPhone 14 series , and the iPhone 13 series .

CaseApp for iPhone review

covers app on iphone

CaseApp for iPhone is an app that lets you order a case for your iPhone that features one of your own photos on the back. It's super easy to use, the cases are less than $30, and they arrive at your front door in a week or less.

Before I jump into the case as an accessory, let's take a look at the CaseApp iPhone app.

covers app on iphone

When creating your case, you are shown a template that includes the part of your photo that will end up on the sides of the case. You can move and scale your photo to fit exactly how you want.

Once you've fitted your photo, you can choose from several different design styles and textures to add to your photo. To see a 3D preview of the design, just tap the one you want to see, wait a few seconds for CaseApp to "build" your case, and take a look at the 3D sample of your case. The graphics on the 3D previews are great and rotating it around is buttery smooth.

Once you're happy with your case, tap order, where you'll be prompted to enter your information. The case is $27.99 and you can pay with PayPal or credit card.

That's CaseApp in a nutshell. Now what about the actual case?

covers app on iphone

The case I ordered didn't take very long to arrive -- less than a week. However, I will admit to being disappointed when first opening the box. If you look at the previous screenshots of the photo I used for my case, it's a picture of a white flower. On my case, however, the flower looks more pink than white. So the color settings on the printer that CaseApp uses is definitely off. This made me sad.

With that said, there are a lot of people who don't care as much about the colors being perfect as they do about having a personalized photo of their kid or pet on their case. If that weren't true, all the printing companies out there that print photos on just about anything imaginable wouldn't exist.

If I were to order another case, I would choose a photo that didn't have a lot of white (as this is one of the most obviously colors to tell is off), as well as choose one of the fun effects that are available. Many of these textures include artistic changes in color, so the misprinted colors will not be obvious.

Regarding the fit and design of the case -- I'm satisfied. It fits perfectly and is very snug. It's nice and thin and doesn't add much bulk to your iPhone. Of course, the tradeoff is that a CaseApp case doesn't offer the greatest amount of protection against drops and falls. But for the minimalists, a personalized CaseApp case may be a great choice.

  • App is easy to use
  • Case is well built and gives easy access to all ports and button
  • Case fits perfectly
  • The printed colors do not match the original colors
  • Only available for iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S

The bottom line

For people looking for the ultimate personalized iPhone case, CaseApp for iPhone is a great app that lets you create fun cases from your own photos. For those who are picky about print quality, however, may not be satisfied with a case from CaseApp, since the printed colors on the case do not match the original colors of the photo you chose. For those who aren't so picky and just want an easy and affordable case that features a photo of their favorite pet, CaseApp is the way to go.

The best protective iPhone cases in 2023: our 30 favorites

Apple’s latest iPhones are more durable than ever, thanks to new technologies like Ceramic Shield and IP68 water resistance. However, that doesn’t mean they’re impervious to damage, and replacing your iPhone screen can get pretty costly . That’s why you need a protective iPhone case.

Even if a drop doesn’t result in a cracked screen, it’s still likely to leave unsightly scratches, scuffs, and dents on the elegant glass and aluminum or stainless steel finish, and while you can add some peace of mind against shattered glass with an AppleCare+ plan , this won’t cover cosmetic damage to your iPhone.

As classy as the new iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro look on their own, they’re also quite expensive. Scratches and dings don’t look great, but more importantly, they can also impact the trade-in or resale value of your iPhone down the road . So, if you want to protect your investment, the best thing to do is select a case that will shield it from the bumpy roads of your everyday life.

  • Best iPhone deals: Save on iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Pro Max and more
  • Best prepaid phone deals: Android, iPhone, flip phone
  • Best iPhone 14 deals: Unlocked and refurbished

The good news is that the popularity of the iPhone lineup means that you don’t need to compromise on style to get a protective case. Some may like the rugged look, while others want to show off the gorgeous deep purple of the iPhone 14 Pro Max , or prefer something that’s more unique to their own style. There’s a case for everyone, and we’ve rounded up some of the best if you’re looking to protect your iPhone while still adding some flair of your own. Here are the best protective iPhone cases in 2023!

Best rugged cases

If you live an adventurous lifestyle, or you simply aren’t confident that your iPhone won’t take a tumble, then you want one of the strongest and most rugged cases available. While all the cases in this round-up are designed to protect your iPhone, these go the extra mile by offering the best protection you can get without adding a ton of bulk.

Otterbox Commuter Series Antimicrobial Case

iPhone 14 Pro:

iPhone 13 Pro:

Scooch Wingman Case

What’s a better rugged case than the one you’re less likely to drop? Scooch’s Wingman isn’t just a protective case that meets military protection standards, it also comes with Scooch’s unique kickstand. When folded, it sits flush with the case’s back, but when it’s unfurled, it can be used as a kickstand, a finger grip, and even as a car vent mount. This level of utility isn’t common in rugged cases, and it’s great to see a company try something so different. It’s an attractive enough case, too, and we’ve picked the Carbon Fiber variant, but you can also choose from six other designs.

Urban Armor Gear Monarch Case

Rugged protection doesn’t always have to look tough, but no one dares to tell Urban Armor Gear that. UAG’s cases look like something a space marine would use, and there’s no doubt from looking at the Monarch case that it’s tough. It’s made with five layers of protection, including rubber feet that stop your iPhone from slipping from surfaces, plus airbags in each corner to dull the shocks from impacts and drops. While the outer frame may look like metal, it’s actually lightweight plastic. But that little deception doesn’t reduce the protection, and UAG claims the Monarch case can withstand drops of 8 feet up to 26 times with no damage — and it comes with a 10-year limited warranty if it doesn’t perform to standard. It comes in black, red, or a carbon fiber design.

Speck Presidio2 Grip Case

One of our favorite iPhone cases by any measure, the Speck Presidio2 Grip is also pretty rugged. Speck claims it’s 20% thinner than the original Presidio Grip and can withstand drops up to 13 feet. It’s also capable of handling falls and bumps thanks to Armor Cloud technology which works like an airbag to absorb shock and protect your phone. A soft-touch finish enables the case to resist scratches, while the raised rubber ridges on top of the case provide additional grip (hence the name). A raised bezel will keep the screen in perfect condition when face-down, cutouts are precise, and the button covers work well.

There’s also a Microban antimicrobial treatment on this case to prevent any bacteria from building up. This isn’t strictly the most protective case Speck offers — that would probably be the Presidio Sport, which offers 15-foot drop protection — but we think the enhanced grip this case provides makes it a better pick. After all, the best drop protection is to not drop your iPhone in the first place.

iPhone 14 Pro:

Survivor Strong

This super-tough case from Survivor is designed to survive anything life throws at you. If drop damage is your main concern, this case meets military standards while offering up to 12 feet of drop protection. Its two layers of protection are constructed from both hard and soft bio-resins, ensuring the case is one Survivor’s most protective — and most sustainable. It boasts textured grips on the sides and back to make it less likely you’ll drop your phone, and if you do drop it, parametric shock-absorbing technology ensures it stays safe. This case is scratch- and discoloration-resistant with a raised bezel to protect your screen and camera, and has added microbial defense, too. All this in a slim, lightweight hard shell that comes in black or clear versions. It even ships in recycled packaging.

Supcase Unicorn Beetle Pro Series Case

Fancy a case that looks like it’s straight out of Black Mirror, and offers drop protection of up to 20 feet? This case from Supcase ticks both boxes, and with its dual-layer construction, rubberized grip, and shockproof TPU bumper, it offers serious protection for your iPhone. The built-in screen protector ensures 360-degree protection, so no more smashed screens should you drop your phone. It’s compatible with Apple MagSafe and most other wireless chargers and features a handy built-in kickstand — there’s even a rotatable holster clip, so you don’t need to sling your phone in your bag or pocket. We’d opt for the eye-catching Cerulean version (pictured), but this case also comes in black or red.

Best waterproof cases

Apple’s latest iPhones feature IP68 water resistance, with the iPhone 14 lineup certified to withstand immersion in up to 6 meters of water for up to 30 minutes. However, it’s important to note that this doesn’t make any of Apple’s iPhones waterproof, and even the IP68 rating is for freshwater — all bets are off if your iPhone ends up in a chlorinated swimming pool or a salty ocean. So, if you plan to be around water, it’s a good idea to get a case that’s designed to keep the water out entirely. Here are some of the best waterproof iPhone cases out there.

OtterBox FRĒ (Designed by LifeProof)

Waterproof to a depth of 2 meters (about 6.6 feet) for up to an hour, this LifeProof case is also snow-proof, dirt-proof, and drop-proof. Made using 60% recycled plastic, it boasts a maximum drop height of two meters, meaning you can probably drop it out of a small tree and it will keep your iPhone in one piece. As a waterproof case, it’s completely sealed from front to back to keep out water, yet it has a maximum thickness of only 14.92mm (just over half an inch), so it won’t be too bulky. It also works with Apple’s MagSafe charger and with Qi wireless charging, so you can keep it on pretty much all the time. Pick it up in black, blue, or purple.

Spidercase Waterproof Case

This is a waterproof case that comes with a built-in screen protector and also a scratch-resistant back panel, providing your phone will all-over coverage. It’s a cheaper alternative to the Ghostek Nautical case but not quite as impenetrable by water at greater depths. That said, it will resist exposure to shallow water, so it’s great for casual swimmers (as opposed to divers). It also includes accurate cutouts for the iPhone’s buttons, sensors, and cameras, and it’s compatible with wireless chargers. As a bonus, it incorporates shock-absorbing edges and corners, giving you plenty of insurance against shocks and drops.

Ghostek Nautical Waterproof MagSafe Case

Do you want to make sure your iPhone never comes into direct contact with water? Then the Ghostek Nautical case is the item for you. It consists of a full-body, watertight sealed shell, making it submersible in up to 20 feet of water (about six meters), and it’s IP68 rated. It’s therefore perfect for divers as well as for taking underwater photos. As a bonus, it also has a high-performance rugged design, with shock-absorbing edges and corners, ensuring that your iPhone won’t be breaking or cracking anytime soon. It has been drop-tested to military standards, withstanding drops of up to 12 feet. It’s also compatible with wireless charging and MagSafe accessories, so it’s a great all-around case in its own right.

Best transparent cases

The iPhone is a phenomenally gorgeous device, and you shouldn’t have to hide it away in the name of protection. These tough cases are also clear (to some extent), so you can still show off your smartphone.

Tech21 Evo Lite Case

For those who want to combine a transparent design with superior drop protection, the Evo Lite case from Tech21 ticks both boxes. Super-strong yet ultra-light, it offers up to 10 feet of drop protection and boasts innovative self-cleaning technology built into the case to help it stay clean over time. A raised bezel around the camera keeps it safe should you drop your phone or place it down, and it won’t add bulk to your phone either, making it a great choice if you like to slip your phone into a pocket.

Catalyst Influence Series Case

This case offers drop protection from falls of up to 10 feet (three meters) thanks to air-cushioned engineering — and it has a transparent design that shows off your iPhone, plus a fingerprint-resistant finish. The micro-textured back ensures excellent grip, helping to prevent any drops from happening in the first place. Raised bezels keep your screen safe, and there’s a handy mute button that lets you instantly mute your phone.

Gear4 Santa Cruz Snap Case

The Santa Cruz Snap case from Gear4 offers some of the most advanced impact protection around thanks to D30, a flexible material used for impact protection by the military that’s injection-molded into the case. The D30 used here is a sustainable version called D30 Bio, made with 52% renewable resources, and the case also uses recycled plastics to keep things green. Choose from a clear case with black magnets or blue magnets, compatible with MagSafe chargers. The scratch-resistant surface keeps your case looking as good as new, and it’s designed to protect against drops of up to 13 feet (4 meters). There’s even built-in antimicrobial protection to inhibit the growth of bacteria.

Ringke Fusion Matte Case

Ringke’s Fusion Matte is a translucent clear case with a minimalist design to let the color of your iPhone 14 shine through. Unlike other clear cases, though, Ringke’s Fusion Matte has a frosted that gives it some style and avoids the glossy finish that tends to attract fingerprints. Nevertheless, despite the frosted back, the sides remain transparent. This lets you can see the elegant aluminum or stainless steel flattened edges of your iPhone 14 or iPhone 14 Pro, while the TPU provides a much better grip. Lanyard holes in each bottom corner also let you attach hand straps, wrist lanyards, or even phone charms to accent the design.

Best leather and wallet cases

Nothing has quite the same impact as leather. If you want your iPhone to look (and feel) good as well as be protected, then these are the cases you want.

Torro Leather Wallet Case

Made in the U.K. with genuine cowhide leather, this slimline wallet case is stylish and strong. It combines a durable silicone frame with a soft microfiber lining (to protect the iPhone’s screen), while the addition of a leather upper layer makes it highly durable, capable of withstanding even the most serious of falls. The genuine, luxury leather also feels great to the touch, and the case is appreciably lightweight and slim, so even with a front and back cover, it doesn’t feel bulky. As it’s a leather wallet case, it has slots for cards and cash, and it comes with a magnetic clasp that will keep it securely closed.

Caislean Leather Wallet Case

Here’s a very sleek leather flip case that doubles as protection for your iPhone and as a holder for cards and bills. It’s made of handcrafted PU leather, making it soft and light but also durable. Three slots for cards and one for bills are included, while the outer layer of the case includes RFID shielding material, just in case anyone tries to scan your back pocket. The case includes raised lips for extra screen and camera protection, and its shockproof inner layer also provides added scratch protection. It can also be folded to serve as a kickstand. It’s pretty affordable and comes in seven colors, although one downside is that it isn’t compatible with wireless chargers.

iPhone 14:

Twelve South BookBook

Twelve South makes some of the nicest-looking Apple accessories you can buy, and its BookBook case for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro leads the pack. This whimsical folio case is designed to resemble a traditional book, with premium leather that will age with a lovely patina over time to give it an even classier weathered look. Inside, you’ll find room for up to four cards and a bit of cash, including a see-through card window for a driver’s license or other form of ID. A magnetic clasp keeps the case securely closed, and the interior shell is removable and usable as an attractive leather-inlaid case of its own for those times you’d rather travel light. Plus, it’s fully MagSafe-compatible for easy attachment to chargers, stands, and car mounts.

Nomad Modern Leather Case

Leather is a hardy material, but often you’ll sacrifice drop protection with a leather case. Not so with this case from Nomad. The base layer of the case is made from hard polycarbonate and combined with a raised TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) bumper around the outside and an internal shock-absorbent air bumper. The addition of high-quality Horween leather from one of America’s oldest tanneries in Chicago imbues the case with leather’s natural durability and luxurious style. The vegetable-tanned leather will develop a gorgeous patina over time, making each case completely unique. This case is drop-tested up to 10 feet, and it has two lanyard attachment points for drop-proofing, plus built-in magnets for MagSafe charging. It’s expensive, but it’s certainly worth the money.

Snakehive Vintage Leather Wallet

If you’re looking for a folio case that will add a bit of elegant old-world class to your iPhone, Snakehive’s Vintage Leather Wallet is worth a serious look. Handcrafted using top-grain nubuck leather, this case looks great as soon as you slide your iPhone into it and will just get even classier over time as the leather develops a rich patina. What’s more, it’s available in some very unique and attractive colors like Bottle Green and teal, giving you more options than just the basic leather brown and black.

Smartish Wallet Slayer

Between Apple Pay  and the advent of digital driver’s licenses , it won’t be long before your iPhone can replace your wallet entirely . Sadly, though, we’re not quite there yet, and most of us have at least a couple of physical cards we still need to carry. However, that doesn’t mean you need to tote around a separate wallet or even resort to a bulky folio case for your iPhone if that’s not your style. That’s where Smartish’s Wallet Slayer comes in, giving you a traditional case that will give you =easy access to your iPhone and your cards. It’s a minimalist case with a dash of whimsy, considering that you can get it in basic black or opt for fun designs with fanciful names like Flirty Floral and You’re Just Jelly. You get room for up to three cards without dealing with a flap over your screen as they slide into a slot on the back, where they’re held in place with a built-in spring mechanism.

Best slim and lightweight cases

Not every case is a big, hefty chunk of plastic that adds inches onto your svelte iPhone. These cases are lightweight and slim while also affording decent protection against everyday drops, bumps, and scrapes.

Ghostek Atomic Slim MagSafe Case

You might not have heard of Ghostek, but it could soon become a household name if it keeps producing cases this good. We’re huge fans of the Atomic Slim case — as the name suggests, it’s slim, but it packs a punch when it comes to protection. It’s constructed from a shock-absorbent TPU inner core and a strong, scratch-resistant polycarbonate back panel and features a lightweight yet tough aluminum frame. There’s some serious drop protection going on here, with this case protecting your phone against drops of up to 12 feet (3.6 meters), as well as a raised bezel that keeps your display and camera lenses safe from dirt and grit and R7X shock absorbing corners. It’s compatible with MagSafe charging too, with built-in magnets. Yes, it’s a little bulkier than a standard silicone case, but it’s one of the slimmest rugged cases around right now and is well worth the price.

Incipio Grip Case

Incipio’s cases are very protective — something that’s reflected in the Incipio case-making process — and the Grip is one of its finest. The Grip case features multidirectional grips to reduce the risk of you dropping your iPhone. If it does happen to slip through your fingers, you’re covered with up to 14 feet of drop protection thanks to Impact Strut technology. Extended raised bezels around the screen offer even more protection — and this case has antimicrobial technology to prevent up to 99.9% of germs and surface bacteria. It works perfectly with wireless charging and Apple Pay, but we’d recommend a screen protector if you want full protection.

Tech21 Evo Check Case

Some of the best rugged iPhone cases can be expensive, but sometimes they’re worth it. We’ve seen firsthand how Tech21 tests rugged cases and its full range offers solid drop protection for your iPhone. The Evo Check has been drop tested from 16 feet, which is a lot higher than the typical height of a smartphone fall. The protection extends around the entirety of the case, with three layers of protection in the bumper to take the sting out of any impact. This case is also relatively light, thin, comfortable to hold, and there’s even built-in antimicrobial protection to keep things nice and hygienic. It has built-in button covers, and generous cutouts for the camera, port, and switch. This case comes in Smokey Black, Sage Green, Lavender, Classic Blue, Light Coral, or Rubine Red, all with interchangeable buttons so you can customize it to your tastes.

Mous Limitless 5.0 Case

Mous somehow manages to combine rugged protection with good looks in the Limitless 5.0 case. The slimmest Limitless case ever, it features AiroShock impact-absorbing technology to protect against drops and bumps, while its tough polycarbonate and TPU construction keep your phone safe. This robust case has an N45 magnet array on the back to ensure compatibility with MagSafe charging and accessories, and Mous sells its own range of magnetic accessories, like a magnetic wallet, should you wish. The Limitless 4.0 comes in black leather, Aramid Fiber, or speckled fabric, or in a choice of two kinds of wood, bamboo or walnut, for a sleek look.

Best cheap cases

Not every case has to put a hole in your wallet, and protection on a budget is possible.

Aedilys Clear Case

This clear case is a bargain for under $20. Made from high-grade TPU and polycarbonate, it has an anti-yellow coating to ensure it stays crystal clear, and it also has flexible shockproof TPU bumpers. Airbag technology disperses shock should you drop your phone — and speaking of drops, it meets military-grade standards for drop protection. With a raised bezel around the screen and camera and a non-slip grip, this super-slim clear case is an excellent budget buy.

Mkeke Clear Case

Here’s a no-nonsense case from Mkeke that offers a slimline profile, flattering transparency, and a sturdy combination of TPU and PC. The mix of a hard PC rear and a flexible yet rugged TPU frame means that it should guard your iPhone 14 or iPhone 14 Pro against everyday accidents and impacts. Its curved shape is also easy to grip, and it includes precise cutouts for all of the phone’s buttons and ports. Transparency is another bonus, providing an inexpensive way of showing off the phone’s good looks.

Spigen Tough Armor Case

Spigen knows tough, and the Tough Armor is one of the toughest in its arsenal. It’s a classic dual-layer shell case, with a flexible TPU inner case paired with a hard polycarbonate outer shell, complete with a horizontal kickstand. The hard outer shell will work wonders at stopping scratches and other such damage, while the inner TPU core will protect your buttons from harm, while also absorbing the impact from drops and shocks. This shock protection has been further enhanced with a layer of impact foam inside the case, along with some strategically placed airbags that help to dissipate energy from impacts. It’s tough, but it’s not the thinnest, and you should be prepared to add a layer of thickness to your phone.

Best fun and cute cases

“Protective” doesn’t have to mean “ugly”, and these cases are, quite simply, adorable. They’re also extremely brawny, so don’t say it to their faces.

Casetify Impact

If you’re looking for a fun and protective case that expresses your unique style, it’s hard to go wrong with the Casetify Impact. With dozens of cool and flashy designs, you’ll have no problem finding one that gives your iPhone the flair you’re looking for. Plus, Casetify doesn’t just have its own original patterns; its massive “Co-Lab” collection features designs licensed from Disney, including Spider-Man and The Mandalorian, plus The Office, Peanuts, Harry Potter, Barbie, BTS, and more. However, there’s more to these than just great looks — as the name implies, you’ll also get strong “military-grade protection, with certified drop resistance of up to 6.6 feet (two meters).

Gviewin Clear Floral Case

Here’s a chic decorated case that happens to be slim, lightweight, and pretty protective. It is made of impact-resistant and flexible TPU, giving it decent protection against pretty much every accident that’s likely to come your way. It also offers a wide selection of different floral designs, which come in a range of tasteful and color schemes that are pretty without being too strong. Owners with wireless chargers will also be pleased to note that these remain compatible with your phone even when the case is on, while the case’s cutouts fit the iPhone very snugly.

Ted Baker GWLADYS Mirror Folio Case

Ted Baker has long offered some delightful floral cases for the iPhone, and its latest entry is the GWLADYS, a mirror flip case that covers the front and rear of the iPhone 14. This offers better all-over coverage than most other cases while still looking classy. Its distinctive should go very well with any Ted Baker handbags you happen to have around, and the built-in mirror helps you quickly check whether your lipstick is neat and tidy or if you have pieces of lunch stuck in your teeth without resorting to activating your selfie camera. This one is only available for the iPhone 14, not the iPhone 14 Pro, although it also fits the iPhone 13.

iPhone 14 / iPhone 13:

Case-Mate Soap Bubble Case

Cases don’t have to be utilitarian, and this eye-catching case proves it. The iridescent finish changes depending on the light and the color of the device inside. The hard-shell back is made from plant-based materials and offers great grip, but if your iPhone should slip from your grasp, there’s no need to worry because this case offers drop protection of up to 10 feet. There’s an anti-scratch coating on the back to keep it looking good, along with MicroPel antimicrobial protection. Case-Mate also offers a lifetime warranty. Accurate cutouts and good button covers complete this tempting package.

Great app but one problem

I will like to start off by saying it’s a great app, and it is very helpful when it comes to making covers for my books on Wattpad. There is one problem though. Ever since the app updated a little over 2 weeks ago, it hasn’t been loading for me. I will go to open it and it would just show the title of the app, with a picture at the top of the screen, and then after about 30 seconds to a minute, it would just close the app automatically. And my internet connection doesn’t matter when it comes to this, it will do this even with a strong internet connection. I really hope you fix this because I would love to continue to use this app to make my covers for Wattpad and I would have probably given this app five stars if it wasn’t for this problem.

Developer Response ,

Hello! We trust that you no longer have this problem, but if you need our help, do not hesitate to send us a message at [email protected]. This last year, we made many improvements and we want to make sure you enjoy them! Sincerely, Desygner team.

It keeps shutting down :(

Honestly, this is a great app for creating covers and I’ve been using it for over a year now. I’d love to continue using it but every time I try to open the app, it crashes after only showing the name for a second or so. I was looking to create a new book cover just recently when I noticed the problem, which I thought was only due to my phone being old. Unluckily, no matter how much I open, close, and reopen the app, it still won’t work. I’ve even tried restarting my phone to see if that would help. I finally got tired of all the attempts and came here to write about it. It’s been like this for a few weeks now and I’m hoping it can be fixed soon.
Our application has gone through many updates since you last contacted us, and we were hoping to hear how your experience is going at the moment :). Feel free to reach us at [email protected] at any time! Cheers, Desygner team.

I just got the pro account free one week trial

I have had the free version for a little over a month now . My subscription for another art program had book covers but I like the 800 fonts better feature and my question is can someone make a book with their pro subscription and then sale the book online with the cover to the book? I’m asking this because I was asked to make a book cover for a friend who wants to sell his books online . Right now I’ve just decided to go with his pictures for his front and his back cover with a title in the front. I’m using a normal font with some colors and shadowing. I like to know if I can use these fonts and graphics you have to sell books online ? Any help would be greatly appreciated .

Judge grills Apple exec about whether company is defying order to enable more iPhone payment options

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — A federal judge on Wednesday questioned whether Apple has set up a gauntlet of exasperating hurdles to discourage the use of alternative payment options in iPhone apps, despite a court order seeking to create more ways for consumers to pay for digital services.

The verbal sparring between Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers and the head of Apple’s app store kicked off a hearing focused on whether Apple is still steering U.S. consumers to its once-exclusive app payment system in defiance of an injunction aimed at promoting more choices that could help lower prices.

Gonzalez Rogers’ order requires Apple to allow app developers to display links to other options besides the company’s own payment system in the U.S. Apple makes billions of dollars annually from that setup, which imposes commission ranging from 15% to 30% on digital transactions completed within the most popular iPhone apps.

Apple’s app store and its commission system also is being targeted in another antitrust case recently filed by the U.S. Justice Department in a case alleging the iPhone walls off competition in a variety of ways that stifle competition and innovation.

A TikTok content creator, speaks to reporters outside the U.S. Capitol, Tuesday, April 23, 2024, in Washington, as Senators prepare to consider legislation that would force TikTok's China-based parent company to sell the social media platform under the threat of a ban, a contentious move by U.S. lawmakers. (AP Photo/Mariam Zuhaib)

Gonzalez Rogers often sounded frustrated and skeptical as she periodically chimed in during four hours of testimony from Matthew Fischer, the Apple executive in charge of the iPhone app store.

The tone of the judge’s questions indicated she is concerned Apple’s efforts to comply with her order have been primarily designed to protect the company’s profits instead of making it easier for iPhone users to switch to other in-app payment options, as she intended.

Gonzalez Rogers was particularly pointed as she grilled Fischer about whether Apple had deliberately made it more cumbersome and confusing for consumers to make digital purchases through alternative services.

“Other than to stifle competition, I can see no other answer,” the judge said as she tried to dissect the rationale for Apple’s design of alternative payment option system for iPhone apps.

Fischer maintained Apple is complying with the judge’s order while still trying to shield iPhone users from bad actors on the internet and enabling the Cupertino, California, company to reap a return on its investments in the app store and other mobile software.

Toward that end, Apple has introduced a new commission structure ranging from 12% to 27% on digital transactions initiated from within an app and completed on an alternative payment option. After Gonzalez Rogers said it sounded like Apple was still collecting a “windfall,” Fischer said the company expected its effective commission rate on digital transactions processed by alternative payment options to be about 18%.

“We are running a business,” Fischer said.

Apple spent more than two years trying to overturn the order that Gonzalez Rogers issued as part of a broader antitrust battle that the company won. The injunction requiring Apple to allow links to alternative app payments took effect in January after U.S. Supreme Court refused to review the case.

But Fischer disclosed Wednesday that Apple so far has only received and approved applications to display links to alternative payment systems from 38 apps so far — a fraction of the roughly 2 million iPhone apps available in the U.S. Fischer couldn’t specify how many of those apps engage in digital transactions when asked by Gonzalez Rogers, who ordered Apple to provide the number as the proceedings progress this month.

Video game Epic Games cites the muted interest in applying for in-app links to alternative payment options as evidence that Apple was still rigging the system in its favor.

Epic, maker of the popular Fortnite video game, is trying to force Apple to make more sweeping changes to accommodate alternative payment options after it unsuccessfully tried to persuade Gonzalez Rogers that the iPhone app store had turned into a price-gouging monopoly during a 2021 trial.

The effort is being supported by Facebook and Instagram owner Meta Platforms, Elon Musk’s X short-messaging service, music streaming service Spotify and long-time Apple rival Microsoft.

Apple’s current alternative payment formula “is guaranteed to continue extracting excessive commissions from developers” while also blocking them from steering consumers to other places where they could buy the same digital services for lower prices, Epic asserted in documents leading up to Wednesday’s hearing.

In its own pre-hearing briefs, Apple accused Epic of trying to get Gonzalez Rogers to micromanage its business in ways designed to boost the video game maker’s profits.

“Epic has repeatedly made clear that what it wants is access to and use of Apple’s tools and technologies without having to pay for them,” Apple argued.

The court hearings are scheduled to resume Friday when another top Apple executive, Phil Schiller, is expected to testify. Gonzalez Rogers hopes to wrap up the hearings by May 17, but told lawyers Wednesday it might take longer than that.

Apple Watch

How iphone and apple watch can help protect you from hearing loss.

Avatar for Michael Potuck

iPhone and Apple Watch include a wide range of valuable health features and a couple of them that don’t get much attention include measuring ambient and headphone noise levels. Read along for a look at how to protect from hearing loss by checking decibel levels on iPhone and Apple Watch.

Table of contents

How loud is too loud, decibel levels with iphone and ipad, check decibel levels with apple watch.

In the US, an estimated 37.5 million adults have trouble hearing, and men are believed to be twice as likely to experience hearing loss as women (via the National Institute for Deafness and Other Communication Disorders).

Thankfully, iPhone and Apple Watch feature both ambient (environmental) and headphone decibel monitoring that are quick and easy to use, including noise threshold warnings. That makes it much easier to prevent hearing damage and loss by knowing when to turn down the volume, use ear protection , or leave a loud environment.

So what’s a harmful decibel level? That depends on the amount of time you’re exposed along with the level of noise. Here’s what Apple says:

Repeated, long-term exposure to sounds above 80 dB can lead to permanent damage. Consider using hearing protection or moving to a quieter area.

Apple Watch also shares examples of noise levels/time exposure that can lead to temporary hearing loss:

  • 80 db: Around 5 hours and 30 minutes a day
  • 85 dB: Around 1 hour and 45 minutes a day
  • 90 dB: Around 30 minutes a day
  • 95 dB: Just 10 minutes a day
  • 100 dB: Even a few minutes a day

How to check decibel levels with iPhone and Apple Watch

Interestingly, Apple doesn’t make its watchOS Noise app available on iPhone and iPad, so here’s how to check decibel levels:

  • Open the Settings app and choose Control Center
  • If it’s not already showing under the “Included Controls,” swipe below and look for the green + icon next to Hearing
  • Connect headphones to your iPhone
  • Now open Control Center (swipe down from the top right corner of your screen) and look for the ear icon to see headphone dB levels
  • To turn on alerts for loud headphone audio, head to Settings > Accessibility > Audio/Visual > Headphone Notifications and tap the toggle
  • And you can limit loud sounds in headphones by heading to Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Headphone Safety > toggle on Reduce Loud Sounds

How to check decibel levels with iPhone and Apple Watch - iPhone > Control Center > Hearing

  • Green desinates “OK” levels and yellow marks “Loud” levels that can damage hearing
  • Tap the Hearing icon to learn more about your headphone noise levels

How to check decibel levels with iPhone and Apple Watch - Open Control Center on iPhone > look for Ear icon tile

  • With music paused, you can use the microphone of your headphones to measure the ambient decibel level s
  • Tap the microphone icon that says Live Listen in the bottom left corner (or tap the Live Listen rectangle)

How to check decibel levels with iPhone and Apple Watch - Open Control Center on iPhone > look for Ear icon tile > tap Live Listen to get ambient decibel level

  • Tap the Browse tab at the bottom
  • Now choose Hearing

covers app on iphone

You can measure both ambient and headphone decibel levels with Apple Watch and the former works with the dedicated Noise app. One neat option with the wearable to have quick-access readings is with the Noise app complication.

  • To check ambient decibel levels, open the Noise app on Apple Watch (you can also turn it on via iPhone in the Apple Watch app > Noise)
  • If you haven’t used the Noise app before, choose to Enable the feature
  • You can learn more about the decibel level you’re exposed to by tapping Learn More at the bottom of the Noise app
  • If you want fast access to decibel levels on Apple Watch, make a watch face with the Noise app compliation
  • If you don’t enable Noise app notifications when setting up the feature, you can head back to the Watch app on iPhone > Noise > Noise Threshold to change the limit/noise notificiations

  • To check headphone decibel levels on Apple Watch, open Control Center on your watch (swipe up from the bottom of the screen from your watchface)
  • Swipe down to the bottom
  • Tap the ear icon

iPhone Emulators on the App Store: Game Boy, N64, PS1, PSP, and More

In April, Apple updated its guidelines to allow retro game emulators on the App Store, and several popular emulators have already been released.

Delta Hands On Feature

A list of some popular emulators available on the App Store so far follows.

Delta Emulator Pokemon Gen 3 Feature

Supported Devices:

iPad support is coming soon .

Supported Consoles:

  • Game Boy (all models)
  • Nintendo DS
  • Nintendo Entertainment System (NES)
  • Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES)
  • Nintendo 64 (N64)

RetroArch Sonic iOS Feature

  • Commodore 64
  • PlayStation (PS1)
  • PlayStation Portable (PSP)
  • SEGA Genesis
  • SEGA Saturn

RetroArch's full list of supported consoles is in the app's description on the App Store .

iOS Emulator Feature

Coming Soon

Provenance is another frontend with all-in-one access to emulators for consoles from Atari, Nintendo, SEGA, Sony, and others. The app is currently available in beta via TestFlight, and it will be launching on the App Store soon . Provenance has been in development since 2016, and it could already be sideloaded on the iPhone.

  • ColecoVision
  • SEGA Dreamcast

A full list of supported consoles is available on Provenance's website .

The popular GameCube and Wii emulator Dolphin will not be available in the App Store, as its developers said Apple will not allow the emulator to use just-in-time (JIT) compilation, and PowerPC-based games are "basically unplayable" without it:

The GameCube and Wii have a PowerPC-based CPU inside them. All modern Apple devices use an ARM-based CPU. It isn't possible to directly run PowerPC code on an ARM CPU, and vice versa. Therefore, if we want to run a GameCube or Wii game on an iPhone, it is necessary to translate the game's PowerPC code to ARM so that the CPU can understand it. Dolphin uses something called a Just-in-Time (JIT) recompiler to achieve this. Whenever the emulated console wants to run game code, Dolphin will use its JIT to translate the PowerPC code to ARM, and then execute the results. Unfortunately, Apple generally does not allow apps to use JIT recompilers on iOS.
