Lawford Mead Primary School

Lawford Mead Primary and Nursery School

We are problem solvers.

In the KS2 assembly today we talked about being independent problem solvers .

We watched this video about an amazing, problem solving crow…

I asked the children what they do when they are stuck on a challenge in class.  It is OK to ask an adult or your partner for help but neither of those solutions really help us become independent , confident problem solvers.

Children told me they…

  • look back at the Lesson Objective and Steps to Success
  • look back at the screen, flipchart or whiteboard
  • look at the Working Wall
  • look at and use the resources at their tables
  • just persevere and try again a different way

I thought these were great answers.  Can you leave a comment below with any other top tips or an example of a time you were stuck and what helped you then?

2 comments on “ We Are Problem Solvers! ”

Redwood decided that we enjoy asking our lead learners to supports us because they prompt us without giving us the answers!

it can be quite hard to solve problems..

Assembly ideas and materials

Here are some materials  to stimulate reflection and discussion in assemblies.  Note – this is an old post and some material is dated and would need to be reviewed and updated.  I no longer maintain this post to keep it current – but the general ideas suggested might still provide some support in planning assemblies.

“Merci!” by Christine Rabette. A 5 minute video without dialogue. It shows the power a person has to change the mood and lift the spirits of others, through laughter – though symbolic of other effects in general. It’s lovely and makes a great assembly.

Mitchell’s moment.

This is a bit of a tear-jerker. It gets me every single time. This is about sportsmanship, inclusion and the relative value of moments of success for different people.

Click to link to original CBS report.

Never, Ever Give Up. Arthur’s Inspirational Transformation.

This builds up nicely; a disabled veteran who thought he would never run again… but then started to do something about it with the help of a mentor.  Leading to the final dash….

The McGurk Effect

The science is fascinating but the message is also helpful – ie that we simply cannot trust our senses alone.  We need to ask questions about what we perceive and what we can remember.

Rory Sutherland Shreddies Advertising

This is very funny and the message in the last few seconds is worthwhile: We need to give more value to what we already have.  Students love this…the interviews with people are real.

OK Go:  This Too Shall Pass

I love this band and all of their one-take videos.  This one is fun but also shows impressive dedication. It took over 60 attempts and several days to get right. This is a model of perseverance for artistic purposes.  Check out all their other videos.

Translators: From my colleague Tim Worrall @musotim.  The same script is used forwards and backwards. Very clever and interesting.  Good for promoting languages.

We Think:  A Charles Leadbeater animation

We are what we share.  A great take on the modern world…good for Sixth Form but also all ages.

Awareness Test: Did you see the dancing bear?

Works brilliantly if the audience hasn’t seen it before.. Younger students? It’s the original and best of these.

Armstrong and Miller: RAF Pilots.

This is a great intro to an assembly about appropriate speech codes.  It’s very funny – and having trawled the full back catalogue, this is only one without any swearing!  It helps to give the message – Do you want to sound ridiculous, with speech that is not compatible with the context.

Monty Python Four Yorkshiremen

Classic comedy.. but easy to link into a message about privilege and being grateful for what we have. Has the effect of softening up with laughter before packing a punch with a moral message:

A life of Worthy Purpose

Powerpoint:  The idea being that being ‘good’ or ‘worthy’ are difficult ideals. We are human and flawed.  But we can certainly aim to live a life of worthy purpose, to do good in the world through our work and our relationships.

Screen shot 2013-12-30 at 22.45.59

Poverty and Education: Is there a moral imperative to succeed in education?

This powerpoint is based on my experience in Indonesia but can be adapted for any school. The goal is to contrast the challenges faced by students in other parts of the world with our opportunities and also to see them as ordinary kids just like us.. they are people with hopes, ambitions and talents, just like us:

Poverty and Education

Inequality:  The data tells an extraordinary story about inequality in the UK

Use this one slide from the Guardian as a visual to raise the issue of inequality and ask questions about solutions.

problem solving assembly ks2

Evolution:

It’s always great to do assemblies about evolution; it’s such an amazing story.  This powerpoint is a series of images highlighting all the different sources of evidence from fossils to DNA.  It gives people in the know a laugh to see a passing South Park reference:

The Evolution Story

Here’s what happened when I gave this assembly in 2016 – it created quite a stir .

What does it mean to be British in 2015+?

I love this assembly. The powerpoint provides a range of images of British culture – sport, comedy, newspapers, poverty, royalty – giving you a backdrop for talking about the nebulous idea of Britishness.  I like to start this assembly playing the fabulous Morrissey song, Irish Blood, English Heart.  This is one person’s view of their cultural and national identity, rejecting the monarchy and other aspects of England but being proud of being English and ‘free’  – “I will die with both of my hands untied”.  I’ve updated the original 2009 version to include images of the Olympics, the politicians who will feature in the 2015 general election and some slides to give a context for a direct exploration of the current debate about what it means to be a modern British Muslim.  Feel free to download and edit it.

What does it mean to be British?

In Court; On Court

An assembly in one image, as seen on the underground.

The story can be read out twice…and the message about context and privilege is strong.

The Awe and Wonder in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field as featured in this Awe post.

Awe: It's in one image.

This image is the size of a postage stamp at 75 feet.  It contains 10,000 objects, each of which is a galaxy. The red-shift tells us that some of these objects are so far away, the light left them close to the very beginning of time.  The scale of the universe and the value of our planet as the home to humanity is a message we can’t give too often. It is always powerful.

The fairly well trodden Lessons from Geese

There is a lot of symbolic value in this, even though the science is disputed by some. I like it a lot.

Bus Lane:   –

An assembly about why rules matter and why it’s in everyone’s interests if we enforce them.

Screen shot 2014-11-09 at 21.02.35

Straw through Potato

An assembly about problem solving and self-believe.  Can it be done?

It can be done.....but how?

An assembly about needing to commit – and risk failure – in order to succeed.

Screen shot 2012-09-06 at 20.00.04

I have actually done this assembly with a personal demo – of rip-sticking around the assembly hall having finally plucked up the courage. Risky but worth it.

The Miracle of Christmas – and every other day

This post links to some good material for a Christmas assembly.

Revision Techniques:  FACE It.

A simply formula for revising – well worth using this for an assembly.

Screen Shot 2017-03-19 at 17.56.38

Student Caricatures:

A set of superb images to discuss attitudes and study habits.

Screen Shot 2015-01-13 at 20.30.15

Let me know if you use them and tell me how it goes.  I’ve got lots more where these came from… for another post.

My Shakespeare  – Kate Tempest

Speaks for itself… powerful collection of the language from Shakespeare wrapped up in a fab Kate Tempest poem

My City – George the Poet

Excellent exploration of hidden poverty in wealthy London in George’s wonderfully engaging powerful style.

A warehouse of ideas that would do the A-team proud. Thanks. OK Go clip used in Physics on a regular basis. It’s majestic

I remember the ‘merci’ one and the ‘time in/on court’ one from assembly. Great post. Such a vast universe we live in. In fact, if you have a bit of time, watch this series of videos put together by Michael from Vsauce. It puts into perspective the universe, and how small we really are. It’s about half an hour. If you can’t watch all of it in one sitting, watch it in bits. It’s a very, very fun thing to spend half an hour on.

Thanks Mo. I love this. Really interesting…good for our science lessons next week!

Yes. And I love the 1977 ‘powers of ten’ video as it reminds us that we are so small and yet, somewhat quite big as well.

School Assembly on Resolving Conflict - KS1 & KS2

Download a school assembly on resolving conflict.

The pack includes a power point slideshow which helps children deal with falling out and making up and resolving conflict. The slides go through different strategies for solving problems and arguments which children then use to resolve examples of squabbles they would be familiar with. This unit also includes a short narration of the six blind men and the elephant who get into a big quarrel about what an elephant actually looks like because each one touches a different part of the elephant. They were all right in their own way. The moral of the story is that rather than arguing like the blind men, we should say, "Maybe you have your reasons." This way we don’t get in arguments.

Key Stage: Key Stage 2 but can be adapted for Key Stage 1

Number of children: Suitable for class, key stage or whole school

Six Blind Men and an Elephant - Extract

Once there lived six blind men in a village. One day they happened to pass an elephant. As they had been blind all their life, they had no idea what an elephant looked like. They all decided to feel it so that they could have an idea. All of them went to where the elephant stood and touched to see what it was like. "The elephant is really much like a pillar!" announced the first blind man who had touched the elephant's leg. "No! Don't be silly! You are wrong! Can you not see that it is obviously a rope! Look feel it! It's definitely a rope, silly old fool!" shouted the second blind man who had touched the elephant's tail.

Problem Solving

A selection of resources containing a wide range of open-ended tasks, practical tasks, investigations and real life problems, to support investigative work and problem solving in primary mathematics.

Problem Solving in Primary Maths - the Session

Quality Assured Category: Mathematics Publisher: Teachers TV

In this programme shows a group of four upper Key Stage Two children working on a challenging problem; looking at the interior and exterior angles of polygons and how they relate to the number of sides. The problem requires the children to listen to each other and to work together co-operatively. The two boys and two girls are closely observed as they consider how to tackle the problem, make mistakes, get stuck and arrive at the "eureka" moment. They organise the data they collect and are then able to spot patterns and relate them to the original problem to find a formula to work out the exterior angle of any polygon. At the end of the session the children report back to Mark, explaining how they arrived at the solution, an important part of the problem solving process.

In a  second video  two maths experts discuss some of the challenges of teaching problem solving. This includes how and at what stage to introduce problem solving strategies and the appropriate moment to intervene when children find tasks difficult. They also discuss how problem solving in the curriculum also helps to develop life skills.

Cards for Cubes: Problem Solving Activities for Young Children

Quality Assured Category: Mathematics Publisher: Claire Publications

This book provides a series of problem solving activities involving cubes. The tasks start simply and progress to more complicated activities so could be used for different ages within Key Stages One and Two depending on ability. The first task is a challenge to create a camel with 50 cubes that doesn't fall over. Different characters are introduced throughout the book and challenges set to create various animals, monsters and structures using different numbers of cubes. Problems are set to incorporate different areas of mathematical problem solving they are: using maths, number, algebra and measure.

Problem solving with EYFS, Key Stage One and Key Stage Two children

Quality Assured Category: Computing Publisher: Department for Education

These three resources, from the National Strategies, focus on solving problems.

Logic problems and puzzles  identifies the strategies children may use and the learning approaches teachers can plan to teach problem solving. There are two lessons for each age group.

Finding all possibilities focuses on one particular strategy, finding all possibilities. Other resources that would enhance the problem solving process are listed, these include practical apparatus, the use of ICT and in particular Interactive Teaching Programs .

Finding rules and describing patterns focuses on problems that fall into the category 'patterns and relationships'. There are seven activities across the year groups. Each activity includes objectives, learning outcomes, resources, vocabulary and prior knowledge required. Each lesson is structured with a main teaching activity, drawing together and a plenary, including probing questions.

This selection of 5 resources is a mixture of problem-solving tasks, open-ended tasks, games and puzzles designed to develop students' understanding and application of mathematics.

Thinking for Ourselves: These activities, from the Association of Teachers of Mathematics (ATM) publication 'Thinking for Ourselves’, provide a variety of contexts in which students are encouraged to think for themselves. Activity 1: In the bag – More or less requires students to record how many more or less cubes in total...

8 Days a Week: The resource consists of eight questions, one for each day of the week and one extra. The questions explore odd numbers, sequences, prime numbers, fractions, multiplication and division.

Number Picnic: The problems make ideal starter activities

Matchstick Problems: Contains two activities concentrating upon the process of counting and spotting patterns. Uses id eas about the properties of number and the use of knowledge and reasoning to work out the rules.

Colours: Use logic, thinking skills and organisational skills to decide which information is useful and which is irrelevant in order to find the solution.

Designed for secondary learners, but could also be used to enrich the learning of upper primary children, looking for a challenge. These are open-ended tasks encourage children to apply and develop mathematical knowledge, skills and understanding and to integrate these in order to make decisions and draw conclusions.

Examples include:

*Every Second Counts - Using transport timetables, maps and knowledge of speeds to plan a route leading as far away from school as possible in one hour.

*Beach Guest House - Booking guests into appropriate rooms in a hotel.

*Cemetery Maths - Collecting relevant data from a visit to a local graveyard or a cemetery for testing a hypothesis.

*Design a Table - Involving diagrams, measurements, scale.

Starting Investigations

The forty student investigations in this book are non-sequential and focus mainly on the mathematical topics of addition, subtraction, number, shape and colour patterns, and money.

The apparatus required for each investigation is given on the student sheets and generally include items such as dice, counters, number cards and rods. The sheets are written using as few words as possible in order to enable students to begin working with the minimum of reading.

NRICH Primary Activities

Explore the NRICH primary tasks which aim to enrich the mathematical experiences of all learners. Lots of whole class open ended investigations and problem solving tasks. These tasks really get children thinking!

Assembly: Problem Solving

Problem Solving

This assembly supports learners to understand key concepts related to the early steps of Problem Solving. It starts by defining the skill and considering key themes, before identifying the skill in action. The themes are explored through three simple exercises, followed by a chance to reflect on their own skills.

Is It Really Impossible?

To help reframe challenges from a can’t do to a can’t do yet.

by Kirk Hayles

Suitable for Whole School (Pri)

To help reframe challenges from a can’t do to a can’t do yet .

Preparation and materials

  • This assembly involves the use of scissors so choose your volunteers appropriately.
  • You will need four or eight volunteers, four A3 sheets of paper, five A4 sheets of paper and four pairs of scissors.
  • See the photographs supplied with this assembly to help you with cutting the paper to do the ‘magic trick’ in step 3 below. It is a good idea to practise this ahead of the assembly.
  • Tell the children that you have a challenge for them. Invite your four volunteers to come up and give them each a sheet of A3 paper and a pair of scissors. Tell them that they each need to cut their piece of paper so they can climb through it without tearing the paper. Give them about a minute to complete the task. Let the children, one at a time, pass their bodies through the hole they have cut in the paper. Most children are probably able to do this and each child can be applauded as he or she successfully completes the challenge.
  • Now hold up a sheet of A4 paper and tell the same children or your other four volunteers to attempt the challenge again with this smaller piece of paper. Give them each a sheet of A4 paper an wish them luck with this trickier challenge. Some very slight children may still be able to complete this challenge by, again, simply cutting a hole in the paper.

second cut

  • Emphasize the key message of this ‘magic trick’, which is that sometimes the impossible is possible – you just need to know how. Tell the children that clearly some things really are impossible – such as you leaping in the air and flying unaided to the top of a tree – but, for other things that are hard and seem impossible, instead of saying, ‘I can’t do it’, you often can say to yourself, ‘I can’t do it yet’.  Give examples, such as people landing on the moon – many years ago it was said that was impossible. Another is children taking the stabilizers off their bikes for the first time – it’s hard but not impossible to ride without them when it would be easy to say ‘I can’t do it’.  Perhaps it is always better to say, ‘I can’t do it yet’. This is the same for an area of maths that they may find tricky, for example.
  • If there is time, you could ask the children for examples of things they can’t do yet, but they think or know they will be able to do one day.

Time for reflection

Ask the children to think about one impossible thing. Then ask them, ‘How could you manage to do that today?’   Prayer Dear God, Help me to think about all the things that I find difficult.  Help me to think positively about these things and remember that, one day – perhaps tomorrow, next week, in a month or in a year – I may be able to achieve them. Amen.
