Sunday by Sunday Online

What a year! Many subscribers tell us Sunday by Sunday has given them strength and a way to connect with family and friends. Perhaps Sunday by Sunday Online has expanded who joins you in weekly prayer and reflection. Maybe you are connecting with family members at a distance in new and important spiritual ways.

We invite you to renew your Sunday by Sunday subscription for the 2023-2024 year. Our new subscription year begins October 1, 2023.

If you are a single subscriber, consider reaching out to someone to share your weekly gospel reflection. Many people discovered during the pandemic that weekly phone calls or Zoom sessions using Sunday by Sunday became treasured parts of their week.

We also publish two study books for ordinary readers to dig into the whole of Mark and Luke. If you sometimes wonder how the gospel snippets we hear at Sunday Eucharist fit into the whole narrative, look at Mark’s Gospel: the Whole Story and Luke’s Gospel: Written for Us .

Sunday By Sunday Online  is a digital weekly publication that invites adults to reflect on the Sunday gospel and Old Testament readings. Each issue:

  • Begins with prayer
  • Presents the Sunday gospel and Old Testament passage in reader parts
  • Short reflections bring forward both scripture study and personal experience
  • Questions invite adults to connect the scriptures and their lives
  • Concludes with prayer and challenges to service and justice commitments

Sunday by Sunday is especially helpful to faith-sharing groups, homilists, campus ministers, chaplains, and RCIA/faith formation directors. It provides both valuable scriptural background and personal reflection questions, prayers, and rituals.

Earth is more than a planet with life on it. It's a "living planet"

June 24, 2024 • About ten years ago, science writer Ferris Jabr started contemplating Earth as a living planet rather than a planet with life on it . It began when he learned that the Amazon rainforest doesn't simply receive the rain that defines it; rather, it helps generate that rain. The Amazon does that by launching bits of biological confetti into the atmosphere that, in turn, seed clouds. After learning this, he began looking for other ways life changes its environment. That led to his new book Becoming Earth: How Our Planet Came to Life . He talks to host Regina G. Barber about examples of life transforming the planet — from changing the color of the sky to altering the weather.

Customer Reviews

Well, I thought this study would have way more detail. I thumbed through it, read some pages, and looked at Revelation (the most difficult book in the Bible, and the study did not explain any of it!) I came across a section where it had "Sunday" all over it. What exactly does that mean? If it is referring to the Sabbath, the Sabbath is on Saturday The 7th day of the week. I haven't opened the books since that day...

Great way to learn the Bible. Bought these for my family

Poppy and Alex are wonderful, three-dimensional characters that complement each other perfectly. Their chemistry and banter not only flow naturally, but it's outrageously funny. A perfect, light-hearted read for summer!

The Wayback Machine, a time machine for the web

By David Pogue

June 23, 2024 / 10:23 AM EDT / CBS News

David Samuel plays viola in the San Francisco-based Alexander Quartet. But he almost didn't make it into this country. "I'm a Canadian citizen," he said, "and I therefore needed a work visa if I was coming to the United States."

That artist's visa required special documentation: "I was tasked with finding old programs, articles, interviews, anything that could demonstrate that I had contributed significantly to the field," he said. Unfortunately, most of that stuff had disappeared from the internet over the years.

Then, someone suggested he check out the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine . Samuel wound up finding every concert program, interview and article he needed for his visa.

The Wayback Machine has been making backups of the world wide web since 1996. Mark Graham, its director, describes it as "a time machine for the web. It does that by going and looking at webpages, hundreds of millions of them every single day right now, and stores them in our servers."

To date there are nearly 900 billion web pages backed up, though computer scientist Brewster Kahle thinks it's a cruel joke to call them "pages" considering their short lifespan: "The average life of a webpage is a hundred days before it's changed or deleted," he said.

wayback-machine.jpg

About a million people use the Wayback Machine every day – journalists, fact-checkers, politicians, policymakers, students. It's free and public. By going to archive.org, you can see what The New York Times looked like in 1996 , or what Netflix looked like when it was a DVD-by-mail company, or what personal websites (like, say,  davidpogue.com ) looked like back in the day.

Kahle created the Wayback Machine in 1996, as part of a nonprofit called the Internet Archive . Inside the archive's San Francisco headquarters, originally a Christian Science Church, you'll find the original pews, slightly creepy statues of everyone who's ever worked for the Internet Archive, and banks and banks and banks of computers – about one-twentieth of the servers that make up just one copy of the Internet Archive. "And then there are multiple copies to keep it safe," Kahle said.

But Kahle wants to back up more than just the web; he wants to back up everything . "Can we get all of the published works of humankind available to anybody curious enough to have access to it?" he asked.

He's backing up old music, like copies of 78 rpm records … and old video games (MD-DOS classics like Oregon Trail, Prince of Persia, and an early Pac-Man ), old TV shows ("We have, maybe, the world's biggest VCR!" Kahle laughed) … and books . And everything Kahle backs up, he makes free online – even the obscure stuff, like vintage game shows , knitting magazines , and pet rock manuals .

You can even check out the books he's scanned as though from a library.

And that's where the trouble begins.

Book publishers decided to sue Internet Archive over lending books. Music publishers are also suing, for $400 million. Kahle says if they win those cases, it could mean the end of the Internet Archive.

The Association of American Publishers declined an interview with "CBS Sunday Morning," but wrote to us: "There is simply no legal justification for copying millions of copyrighted books, changing them into eBooks, and distributing them to the public, all without getting permission."

But to Kahle, it's a battle of good and evil. He says the publishers' eventual goal is to stop public libraries from owning anything at all. "We'll see how it all turns out; it's being fought out in the courts," he said.

The publishers won their lawsuit against Kahle's operation ; he's filed an appeal. The record companies' lawsuit is pending.

In happier news, violist David Samuel received his green card in September, thanks in part to the materials he found on the Wayback Machine.

About the author

Julieann campbell.

Julieann Campbell is an Irish poet and author. Born in Derry in 1976, the former reporter gave up the newsroom after a decade to concentrate on motherhood, poetry and collecting oral histories. Julieann's first solo poetry collection, 'Milk Teeth' was published in 2015 by Guildhall Press (Derry), and she was one of many contributors to their vast 2008 compendium, 'City of Music: Derry's Music Heritage'.

Alongside Dr Tom Herron, she co-edited the 2008 collection, 'Harrowing of the Heart: The Poetry of Bloody Sunday', which brought together - for the first time - myriad artistic responses to the 1972 massacre. Works by established artists such as Seamus Heaney, Brian Friel, John Lennon and Christy Moore merge seamlessly alongside those of Derry writers, be they eyewitnesses, relatives, poets or activists. Playwright Brian Friel was among attendees at its launch in January 2008 at Derry's Guildhall. The same year saw Julieann winning First Prize for a Poetry Collection in Donegal's Charles Macklin Poetry Competition.

A former Chair of the Bloody Sunday Trust in Derry, Julieann's first non-fiction book, 'Setting the Truth Free: The Inside Story of the Bloody Sunday Justice Campaign' (Liberties Press, Dublin) won the 2013 Christopher Ewart-Biggs Memorial Prize. The book was launched by legendary folk singer Christy Moore in Derry, and by eminent human rights lawyer Gareth Peirce in London. As well as this, Julieann also took on the role of families' press officer ahead of the publication of Lord Saville's Report of the Bloody Sunday Inquiry in 2010.

With the Unheard Voices project, she compiled and edited the collection, 'Beyond the Silence: Women's Unheard Voices from the Troubles' (Guildhall Press,2016). This led to the commission of an essay entitled, 'Rewriting History', for New Island's anthology, 'Female Lines: New Writing from Northern Ireland' (2017)

Julieann later worked extensively with the Museum of Free Derry to generate and develop the oral history strand of their National Civil Rights Archive. She is now a PhD Researcher at Ulster University exploring the collective and individual impact of storytelling across the north of Ireland.

She also has an actual BA (Hons) Degree in old movies, she loves late nights, d.i.s.c.o, and all the little things that make life shine....

Je’Von Evans: ‘I’ve Been Telling Friends Since the Third Grade I was Going to Wrestle for WWE’

Justin barrasso | 6 hours ago.

Je'Von Evans

Most 20-year-olds aren’t headlining a major card for WWE.

Je’Von Evans is the exception to that rule.

Only two years removed from graduating high school, Evans wrestles in a fatal four-way this Sunday at Heat Wave for the NXT title against Shawn Spears, Ethan Page, and reigning champ Trick Williams.

“I’ve been telling friends since the third grade I was going to be a WWE wrestler,” said Evans, who is 20-year-old Malachi Jeffers. “My teachers would get mad at me, telling me I needed a backup plan or I should go to college. But I didn’t listen.”

Shawn Spears and Je'Von Evans

Evans followed his heart–and succeeded. He signed with WWE at only 19, quite a feat for the North Carolina native. Now known as “The Young OG of NXT”, the wrestling prodigy started training at 13. He embraced every opportunity he received on the indies, then took on an unrelenting pursuit of greatness once he finished high school.

“Once I graduated, I started going crazy on the indies,” said Evans, who is the first professional wrestler to graduate from the College Prep and Leadership Academy. “All I wanted to get paid was a little money for food. I was grinding, and it paid off.”

The breakout moment occurred last year during WrestleMania weekend. During the GCW For The Culture show in Los Angeles, Evans was outstanding in his multi-man match.

“I wasn’t originally booked, but my friend was wrestling on the card and he couldn’t make it, so I asked if I could take his place,” said Evans. “The promoter said I could, and I was like, ‘Say less.’ One of the agents for WWE was at that show, and we spoke after the match.”

Je'Von Evans is reaching new heights in NXT

That WWE agent was talent scout Gabe Sapolsky, who cut his teeth finding emerging talent on the indies–and now works with the likes of Paul “Triple H” Levesque and Shawn Michaels in the search of wrestling’s future.

“Gabe saw me in this elimination match, and after I got eliminated, he met me at the curtain,” said Evans. “He was like, ‘We need to exchange info right now.’”

Evans signed with WWE that fall. His most noteworthy moment to date occurred two weeks ago when he won a 25-man battle royal to become the top contender for the NXT title. Behind-the-scenes, Evans has won over his coaches and peers at the WWE Performance Center with a willingness to work, listen, and learn.

Je'Evon Evans taking it to then-champ Ilja Dragunov

Wrestling a captivating, high-flying style, Evans vowed that people have only witnessed a small sample of what he can do in the ring–and he cannot wait to unveil even more.

“I want to become the youngest NXT champion ever, so I’ve got to turn it up,” said Evans. “It’s time to go crazy and show something you’ve never seen before.”
