About this item

  • Made from specially tanned and finished leather, the outside feels soft to the touch and develops a natural patina over time. The case quickly snaps into place and fits snugly over your iPhone without adding bulk.
  • With built-in magnets that align perfectly with iPhone 13 Pro Max, this case offers a magical attach and detach experience, every time. The perfectly aligned magnets make wireless charging faster and easier than ever before. And when it’s time to charge, just leave the case on your iPhone and snap on your MagSafe charger, or set it on your Qi-certified charger.
  • Like every Apple-designed case, it undergoes thousands of hours of testing throughout the design and manufacturing process. So not only does it look great, it’s built to protect your iPhone from scratches and drops.
  • This case is made with high-quality, supple leather to protect your iPhone. Leather is a natural material and like a fine leather belt, it may show creases, marks, or a patina over time. Interaction with MagSafe accessories will leave slight imprints (as shown in the last image of the gallery).
  • Comaptible with iPhone 13 Pro Max

It doesn't matter if you have the iPhone 13 Mini or the iPhone 13 Pro , Apple's smartphones are glass sandwiches that will shatter when they inevitably escape your hands. That's totally not your fault. But it's why we highly recommend using a case with your expensive iPhone. It's not guaranteed to protect your device, but it can help. We've tested dozens and whittled them down to our favorites below. This list includes other iPhone accessories too, such as cables, charging adapters, and screen protectors.

Check out our other buying guides, like the Best MagSafe Accessories , Best iPhone , Best iPhone 12 Cases , Best iPad Accessories , Best iPhone SE accessories , and Best iPhone 14 Deals .

Updated September 2022: We've added Bluebonnet's MagSafe Wallet and Mophie's 3-in-1 wireless charger. We've also moved many of our MagSafe accessories into their own guide .

Special offer for Gear readers: Get a 1-year subscription to WIRED for $5 ($25 off) . This includes unlimited access to WIRED.com and our print magazine (if you'd like). Subscriptions help fund the work we do every day.

We've tested these cases on the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max . Cases that fit the 6.1-inch iPhone 13 will not fit the 6.1-inch iPhone 13 Pro. That's because the camera system on the standard Pro is significantly larger. Some case manufacturers didn't learn of this until the iPhones were announced , so you might see some compatibility issues. It's something to keep an eye on as you shop.

What's MagSafe?

MagSafe is a term you might recall from the magnetic charging cable on MacBooks of old ( and new! ). Apple brought back the name for the iPhone as a system of magnetic accessories that can connect to the back of the iPhone 12, iPhone 13, and iPhone 14 range. Apple says its magnet accessories are shielded, so it's safe to use with credit cards (if maybe not hotel key cards).

Cases need to have a ring of MagSafe magnets built into them to properly work with other MagSafe gear (one easy way to tell is by looking for a ring on the inside of a case in product images). Not every third-party case has them. Some companies claim their cases are “MagSafe compatible” even without magnets, but that may be because the case is thin enough for the magnets to still stick. The connection is almost always weak, though. If you plan on using MagSafe accessories like Apple's wireless charger or wallet , you should get a MagSafe case. If a case or accessory supports MagSafe in this guide, you'll see “MagSafe” in the product description.

Apple's Official Cases

Sticking with Apple is the easiest route, though you certainly don't need to pay $49 for a simple MagSafe case. Apple has a wonderfully supple leather case and a silicone option. Both have accurate cutouts for ports and decently clicky buttons. They're fairly slim and keep the camera module flush, preventing the iPhone from rocking when it's flat on the table. Unlike prior Apple cases, all the edges are covered up, including the bottom.

Best Overall

I've tested a lot of cases over the years, and every now and then a new one comes across my desk that just feels great. Caudabe's Sheath takes that badge. The flexible polymer case has a micro-etched matte texture that almost feels like canvas; it's grippy and very thin. The buttons are all easy to press, and there's MagSafe embedded inside. However, in the first model I tested, there was a very small bump on the center-right side of the case. Caudabe says it was a defect, and the following three cases I tried have been blemish-free. Just keep an eye on this if you snag it.

Best Cheap Case

It's cheap and slim, has MagSafe, and isn't awful to look at (if a little nondescript). If you want to pay as little as possible for a case, Spigen's your best bet. The buttons are responsive, all four edges are covered, and it's very easy to access the mute switch. The front edges around the screen are raised too, but only a little.

Nimble Spotlight case

Three Eco-Friendly Cases

These are a handful of cases we like that are made out of recycled or plant-based materials and keep the environment top of mind.

Pivet Zero+ With MagSafe for $35 :  This MagSafe case from Pivet comes with a lanyard so you can dangle your phone from your wrist. The buttons are very clicky, and there's good protection around the edges, but the edges around the screen are barely raised, so there's a good chance your screen might get scuffed up when it hits the ground. The case is made from 100 percent recycled plastics (and is recyclable), and Pivet's Self-Cycle tech means it will degrade in landfill environments significantly faster than traditional plastics (though it may still take some time ). For every Ocean Blue case sold, Pivet donates a portion of its proceeds to The Ocean Agency to help it promote ocean conservation as a part of the United Nations Ocean Decade project.

Nimble Spotlight Case for $25 : This is one of the most attractive eco-friendly cases I've ever used. It's made from 72 percent recycled plastic from various sources (thermoplastic urethane, silicone, and old plastic phone cases), which is reflected in its geometric design. The speckled part is very grippy and keeps the phone from vibrating off a desk. The packaging has zero plastic, and Nimble provides a free shipping label in the box so you can send in any plastic case you have lying around to be recycled. You'll get 15 percent off your next purchase if you do. Sadly, there's no MagSafe support.

OtterBox Core Series Case With MagSafe for $50 : I like the rubbery and speckled feel of this slightly see-through case. There's MagSafe support, the buttons are responsive, and it looks great, though the edges aren't raised much. Despite the texture, it's quite slippery. The good news is that it's made of 50 percent recycled materials.

Sonix iPhone case

The Prettiest Cases

If you want the prettiest, cutest, or most unusual case, look no further than Sonix. The sheer number of styles it offers for its MagSafe cases is mind-boggling—there's even a glow-in-the-dark model ! The buttons are great, and you get a raised bumper on the front edges. Sonix says some of these cases are biodegradable and made with eco-friendly thermoplastic elastomer materials, allowing them to break down over three to five years. If you have an old Sonix case, you can use the company's ReSonix program and donate your case to a nonprofit like Goodwill to get 30 percent off your next case purchase. The packaging is made with recycled paper.

★ Other Pretty Cases: Casetify matches Sonix in the variety of designs you can find . Seriously, the options are endless. I prefer its MagSafe Impact cases ($75) , which have a really nice speckled design around the edges. It's just a shame they're so expensive. These cases are made of 65 percent recycled and plant-based materials.

Twelve South BookBook iPhone case

Best Wallet Case

Most wallet cases can barely fit more than two cards. The Twelve South BookBook breaks the mold—it's pretty much my perfect wallet case. It's two separate pieces. There's the MagSafe full-grain leather case with a rigid and slightly raised bumper around the edges (plus clicky buttons), and this snaps onto the folio wallet. The connection is strong, and on the left side of the wallet, there's a transparent slot for your ID and three regular slots that can fit around three to four cards. There's a pouch to hold cash, but it's long enough to also hold my vaccination card (I checked!). You can prop up your phone with the folio wallet in landscape mode, and when you need to recharge your phone wirelessly—or don't need the wallet—just pull the phone off. It's amazingly convenient. Oh, and did I mention it looks like a book ?!

Totallee MagSafe iPhone case

The Thinnest Case

Totallee has made a name for itself as the go-to option for anyone who hates cases but wants some kind of protection. Its cases are so thin you can't seriously expect them to protect your iPhone from a drop, but they'll take care of everyday scratches and scuffs. The company sells three versions: an ultra-thin plastic case, a soft-touch case, and a soft-touch MagSafe case. The plastic case is thin enough that accessories will still magnetically stick, and it even comes in green to match the new colors for the iPhone 13 range.

But if you want some protection, go with the clear Hybrid MagSafe case. The rigid black bumper protects the phone's frame, the edges around the screen and camera module are raised, and the buttons aren't mushy to press. It does all that while remaining pretty thin.

Nomad screen protector with iphone

Great Screen Protectors

Apple says its iPhones are protected by its strongest glass ever, dubbed Ceramic Shield. Yay! But … glass is still glass. A big or small fall is enough to crack it, and I've already noticed a few scratches. These WIRED-tested screen protectors were the easiest to apply.

Smartish Tuff Sheet 2-Pack for $10 : Smartish makes the installation process dead simple. Clean the screen with the included wet wipe, dry it with the microfiber cloth, and use the stickers to remove any lingering dust. Then place the alignment tool over your iPhone, remove the backing from the tempered glass protector, and plop it in place! I had a perfect alignment in seconds. You even get a spare.

Spigen Glas.tR EZ Fit 2-Pack for $16 : Awful name aside, you get two screen protectors here, and after you follow the instructions to clean the screen with the included wet wipe, dust-removing stickers, and microfiber cloth, you'll need to place a large plastic alignment case over your iPhone and then peel the protector's backing off. The only thing I don't like? The amount of plastic used here for the two alignment tools feels a bit wasteful. This protector is also available for the iPhone 13 Mini and the iPhone 13 Pro Max .

Nomad Screen Protector for $25 : Nomad's process is almost identical to the Smartish above, and installation took a matter of seconds. You only get one protector though, and it's pricier. Just make sure to press down from the middle and push out to eliminate as many air bubbles as possible.

iPhone case

A Well-Rounded Case

This OtterBox case checks all the boxes. It's made of 50 percent recycled plastic, covers all the edges well, has easy-to-use buttons, and feels sturdy. Oh, and there's MagSafe support too. The raised front edges keep the screen off the ground, and it maintains a relatively thin profile. OtterBox says the exterior has an antimicrobial finish to keep bacteria at bay, but there's scant evidence that this actually helps, and it's certainly no substitute for washing your hands.

iPhone case

For Nail Biters

I have a bad habit of biting my nails, so it's nearly impossible for me to access the mute switch on the iPhone when it's in a case. The Vibe case from Catalyst smartly solves this by letting you control the switch with a knob that rotates. It's far more satisfying to use. The case has a ring of magnets for MagSafe compatibility and a nice grippy texture, and it doesn't add much heft. The edges around the screen are decently raised to keep it off of surfaces, and there are four spots where you can attach a lanyard for additional security.

iPhone case

A Leather Case

I like Nomad's leather cases the most. Not only is the material from the esteemed Chicago-based Horween Leather Company, but it's also fused with a thermoplastic elastomer bumper for better shock-absorbing protection. Better yet, Nomad embedded magnets so this works with all MagSafe accessories, and there's a spot to attach a wrist strap.

★ Slimmer Leather Cases: You probably don't want to spend $70 on a case. Then get Mujjo's case ($45) instead. It's slimmer and the leather is equally luxurious (and covers the entire phone, with no polycarbonate whatsoever). Too bad there's no MagSafe support.

A Wooden Case

Oakywood's wooden MagSafe cases come in either cherry or walnut, with wood from sustainable sources. It feels really nice! The buttons are relatively easy to press, and the polycarbonate bumper around the edges adds an extra layer of protection. I like that the company plants a tree for every product sold .

A Triple Wireless Charger

If you have an iPhone, you may have other Apple-made products, like AirPods or the Apple Watch . If so, consider one system to charge them all. I like this one from Belkin. It's completely MagSafe-compatible, so your iPhone 13 can hook up magnetically and will look like it's floating. The Apple Watch attaches to its charger magnetically, and there's a spot for the AirPods case on the base. The minimal design hides most of the charger and elevates the gear more than any other 3-in-1 I've used, making for a very elegant system. It's one of the only third-party chargers that supports a 15-watt output for the iPhone 13 range and fast-charging support for the Apple Watch, so your devices will recharge as quickly as wirelessly possible.

Belkin also has an elongated pad that adds MagSafe charging for the AirPods (if you have the newer AirPods 3rd Gen or AirPods Pro (with the MagSafe case) . That just means your earbuds case will stay securely in one place while charging. It takes up a whole lot more room than the stand, and the screen isn't propped up, but maybe that's your jam.

★ Also Great: Satechi's 3-in-1 Magnetic Wireless Charging Stand ($120) is slightly cheaper; it's also more compact and doesn't take up much room on a desk. You can squeeze in your wireless charging earbuds case in front of the magnetic Apple Watch dock and charge both, and the iPhone 13 can float on the stand nearby in portrait or landscape orientation. It won't charge as quickly as Belkin's system, but it does the job .

Yellow semiclear video game controller with long backplate connecting each side. Left side has a joystick and...

A Game Controller

If you spend a fair amount of time playing mobile games, it's worth considering Apple Arcade for access to high-quality titles (with zero ads). Pair it with the Backbone One ( 8/10, WIRED Recommends ) controller and you'll wonder how you played anything without it. The control layout is intuitive and satisfying to use (and comfortable), plus it works with a decent selection of games. You can even use it to play your Xbox or PlayStation games anywhere, and it adds a headphone jack! Just know that there's an adapter in the box to fit the iPhone 13, and you'll probably need to take your case off every time you use it.

Mophie 3in1 travel charger kit

Great for Travelers

Do you need to spend $150 on a charging solution like this? No. But if price is no object and you have an Apple Watch, iPhone, and AirPods with a wireless charging case, it's really hard to dislike Mophie's 3-in-1 MagSafe wireless charger. It can juice up your iPhone at the full 15-watt speed, the Apple Watch puck pops up for nightstand mode, and the third spot fit my AirPods Pro well (it's hit or miss whether other wireless earbuds will recharge).

The whole thing packs down to a very compact size, and Mophie includes a little felt travel case with a charging cable and adapter. It's a neat solution and is much better than carrying several different cables and chargers.

Anker power adapter

A Charging Adapter

None of the iPhone 13 models come with charging adapters in the box. Plus, the cable they do come with is a USB-C-to-Lightning, and you might not have a USB-C power adapter lying around. Rather than buying an adapter from Apple, you should get this one from Anker. It's positively tiny—just a hair bigger than the 5-watt adapter Apple used to include. However, the Nano Pro can output 20 watts, meaning it can fast-charge your iPhone. The prongs don't fold, so if you need one that does, I like this Satechi 30-watt charger , which is almost as small and lightweight.

★ For More Power: Satechi's 108-watt 3-port charger ($75) is powerful enough to juice up your iPhone, MacBook Air, and iPad Pro at the same time. The prongs can fold, and the whole thing won't take up too much space in a bag.

USBC Lightning cable

A Durable Cable

If you're using a mangled Apple-made cable to recharge your iPhone, it might be time for an upgrade. Apple's included cable is fine , but I've seen too many in tatters to believe it will withstand long-term abuse. I like Nimble's knit fabric USB-C to Lighting cables. They're made from recycled plastic and aluminum, are BPA- and PVC-free, and ship in plastic-free packaging. They're also just plain attractive.

★  More Great Cables: Prefer a USB-A to Lightning cable? I like the Crown Joule from Smartish ($20) , which is technically USB-A to MicroUSB, but there's an adapter at the tip that converts it to USB-C or Lightning. You can also choose standard USB-C to USB-C, Lighting to USB-A, or Lightning to USB-C. Caudabe's ChargeFlex USB-C to Lightning cable ($29) is another great option. It's braided, is 5 feet long, and has a clip you can use for cable management. And check out Nomad's Lightning to USB-C Sport Cable ($25) . It has an integrated cable tie, is about 6.5 feet long, and has a tough nylon braid.

iPhone case

Rugged With a Holster and Kickstand

Rugged cases with holsters are usually very ugly and a pain in the butt to remove or install (looking at you, Otterbox). This MagSafe one from Pelican goes against the grain. A simple design keeps it aesthetically pleasing, and you can install it in seconds just by snapping the front and back pieces of the case together around the iPhone. It's thick, with flaps covering all the ports (except for the speakers), and the buttons are still easy to click. The cherry on top? It includes a holster, which the iPhone easily slots into, and this also doubles as a kickstand. You can take the iPhone out of its case by sliding the tip of the kickstand into a groove on the corner edge. Smart!

★ Another Great Case and Holster: The Evo Max from Tech21 ($23) is surprisingly slick. The buttons are very responsive, the power and mute switch are covered, and you can slide a cover over the rear cameras for some added peace of mind. It comes with a separate holster you can slide the iPhone into, and it stays very secure on a belt. Unfortunately, this one does not work with any MagSafe accessories, but it does support wireless charging.

iPhone case

A Leather Holster

Who needs pockets when you can carry your iPhone on your pants? This full-grain leather holster has a strong magnet that keeps it secure, and the magnetic clasp ensures your iPhone won't fly out. The interior is lined with Ultrasuede, a microfiber-like material that keeps scratches at bay. You can access the mute switch and charging port without taking your iPhone out, which is a nice touch. Just make sure to choose the right size for your device.

Hand holding small silver circular disc with an engraved apple logo on it in front of large silver luggage case

Find Your Gear

Frequently misplacing your keys, backpack, or wallet? One of the easiest ways for you to keep tabs on your gear is to use Apple's AirTag (though it's not without flaws ). You pair it with the Find My app that's preinstalled on Apple devices and put it in your bag, in your wallet, or on your keychain. If it's nearby, you'll see it on the map and can track it down fairly precisely. If it isn't , don't worry. You'll not only see the last known location, but AirTags also leverages all nearby Apple devices to try and ping its location back to you. You just need to wait until someone with an Apple gadget walks by.

We've rounded up other gadgets you can use to track your gear here . Want to track your pet? We've got options for that too !

Cyrill iPhone case

Honorable Mentions

Not every case or accessory I test is a winner, but that hardly means they're bad. Here are a few options I tried but didn't like enough to list above.

  • Cyrill Cases for $17 : None of Cyrill's cases for the iPhone 13 lineup have magnets for MagSafe compatibility (the connection is very weak). Otherwise, they're some great, attractive cases. My personal favorite is the Color Brick series.
  • Moft Snap Phone Case for $40 : This case offers improved magnet strength, so if you frequently deal with accessories falling off your iPhone, it's worth checking out. Too bad the buttons are a bit too hard to press.
  • Clickr Stand & Grip Case for $25 : There's no MagSafe support here, but this is a relatively affordable case with a kickstand that works in portrait and landscape orientation. Just make sure you hear the click when you adjust the stand at the back to make sure it stays in place. It doubles as a grip, but it wasn't comfortable to hold, and I don't think it looks that nice.
  • Spigen Enzo MagSafe Case for $150 : Spigen, best known for making ultra-affordable cases, went and made an ultra-luxurious case. It's … fine. I mean, it's nice! The leather feels supple, the suede interior is soft, and there's a fancy wrist strap. I just don't know why it costs $150. For that much money, I'd want a much flashier case.
  • Survivor Endurance for MagSafe for $55 : There's nothing dramatically special about Survivor's MagSafe case. It feels tough, and I like the grippy pattern on its rubber-like bumper. It's made of recycled materials too.
  • Incipio Grip for MagSafe for $60 : You can get it in clear or black, and the most notable part of this case is the grippy sides, which are great if you have butterfingers. The buttons also react well.
  • Bluebonnet Full-Grain Leather MagSafe Wallet for $59 : Bluebonnet says its magnets are extra strong and that your wallet will “never” slip off. Never is a bit of a stretch—shoving this into a tight pocket did shift it slightly off the iPhone. However, it is stronger than any other MagSafe wallet I've tried. It looks attractive, but it can only fit two cards, and it's hard to pull the cards out.

Apple’s iPad lineup, including the versatile iPad Air, continues to set the standard for tablet devices. The iPad Air, in particular, is known for its slim design, advanced features, and impressive performance, making it a favorite among users who need a balance of power and portability. The modern iPad Air is equipped with the latest technology, and supports the Apple Pencil and Magic Keyboard. These features make it an ideal device for a wide range of activities, from creative projects and professional tasks to entertainment and education.

As iPads have evolved, so too has the need for high-quality cases that provide protection without compromising on style or functionality. In this article, we will explore the best iPad Air case  in 2024. We’ll go into the key features that make an exceptional iPad case, discuss the benefits of using a case, and examine various types of cases to help you find the perfect match for your needs. Use this guide that will help you make an informed decision to safeguard and complement your iPad Air.

Why Do You Need an iPad Air Case?

Best iPad Air Cases

The iPad Air, with its sleek and slim design, is a marvel of modern engineering. However, its thin profile also makes it more susceptible to damage. Investing in a high-quality iPad Air case is essential to protect your valuable device from everyday wear and tear. Let’s discuss some key reasons why you should consider purchasing a high-quality case for your iPad Air.

Firstly , protection is paramount. A good case shields your iPad Air from scratches, dents, and cracks that can occur from accidental drops or bumps. Given the iPad Air’s lightweight and portable nature, it is often carried around, increasing the risk of damage. A sturdy case provides a buffer against such mishaps, ensuring your device remains in pristine condition.

Secondly , a quality case can improve functionality. Many cases come with built-in stands that allow for comfortable viewing and typing angles. This is particularly useful for activities like watching videos, making video calls, or working on documents. Some cases also include additional features such as keyboard attachments, which can transform your iPad Air into a mini-laptop.

Lastly , an iPad Air case offers style and personalization. With a variety of designs, colors, and materials available, you can choose a case that reflects your personal taste and complements your device’s aesthetics.

So, a high-quality iPad Air case not only provides essential protection but also improves the device’s functionality and allows for personalization. It’s a small investment that can significantly extend the lifespan and usability of your iPad Air.

Different Types of iPad Air Cases

Best iPad Cases for iPad Air

Folio Cases

Folio cases are highly favored for their combination of style and functionality. They typically feature a foldable cover that doubles as a stand, allowing for hands-free viewing and typing. This type of case provides all-around protection for your iPad Air, covering both the screen and the back, and often includes pockets for storing documents or cards. Folio cases are ideal for users who need a versatile and professional-looking case for both work and leisure.

Slim cases are designed for those who prefer minimal bulk while still ensuring adequate protection. Made from lightweight materials like TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) or polycarbonate, these cases fit snugly around your iPad Air, safeguarding it against scratches and minor impacts. Slim cases maintain the sleek profile of the iPad Air and are perfect for users who want protection without compromising the device’s slim design.

Rugged Cases

For those who require robust protection, rugged cases are the way to go. These cases are constructed with heavy-duty materials and often feature reinforced corners and shock-absorbing layers. Rugged cases are designed to withstand harsh conditions, making them ideal for outdoor enthusiasts, travelers, or anyone who needs extra durability for their iPad Air. They provide maximum protection against drops, shocks, and other potential hazards.

Keyboard Cases

Keyboard cases are perfect for users who want to enhance their iPad Air’s productivity. These cases come with an integrated keyboard that connects to the iPad via Bluetooth or a smart connector, transforming the tablet into a functional laptop. Keyboard cases are excellent for typing-intensive tasks such as writing, editing, or working on spreadsheets. They often include additional features like adjustable viewing angles and protective covers.

Leather Cases

Leather cases add a touch of sophistication and elegance to your iPad Air. Made from premium vegan leather, these cases not only protect your device but also offer a luxurious feel and appearance. Leather cases are durable and can withstand daily wear and tear while maintaining a timeless aesthetic. They are suitable for users who appreciate high-quality materials and a classic look.

How to Choose the Best iPad Air Case

When choosing an iPad Air case , it’s essential to balance protection, functionality, and style. The right case should not only safeguard your device but also enhance its usability and reflect your personal taste. Here are the key factors to consider:

  • Protection Level : Ensure the case offers robust protection against drops, bumps, and scratches. Look for features such as reinforced corners, shock-absorbing materials, and raised edges to protect the screen.
  • Material Quality : High-quality materials like TPU, polycarbonate, or premium vegan leather ensure durability and a pleasant tactile experience. The material should be resistant to wear and tear, maintaining its appearance over time.
  • Weight and Bulk : Opt for a case that provides adequate protection without adding significant weight or bulk to your iPad Air. Slim cases are excellent for maintaining the device’s sleek profile.
  • Functionality : Consider additional features such as built-in stands, keyboard integration, or pockets for extra storage. These functionalities can enhance your iPad Air experience, making it more versatile for different uses.
  • Ease of Use : The case should allow easy access to all buttons, ports, and cameras without requiring removal. Precision cutouts and responsive button covers ensure a seamless user experience.
  • Style and Design : Choose a case that matches your personal style and preferences. Whether you prefer a minimalist design, a rugged look, or a luxurious finish, the case should complement your aesthetic.
  • Price : While it’s tempting to opt for cheaper options, investing in a high-quality case can save money in the long run by providing better protection and durability.

Apple is ditching leather to make its products more sustainable

Instead, the company is introducing a material called finewove to replace it..

Apple has spent a significant amount of its iPhone 15 event today talking about its environmental bonafides, and part of that is the fact that it will no longer sell leather accessories, including things like iPhone cases and Apple Watch bands. The company noted that while leather is popular for things like watch straps, it has a serious impact on the environment, particularly at Apple's scale.

Instead, Apple is introducing a new product called FineWoven that'll replace its leather straps. Visually, they do look quite similar to the leather bands it used to sell — the leather loop and "modern buckle" styles will still be available, just in this new FineWoven material. Apple also confirmed that it is using FineWoven on this year's iPhone cases, as well.

Apple has long had a partnership for the Apple Watch with Hermès, a company known for high-end fashion products including a wide variety of leather products. The collaboration will continue, but Hermès straps won't be made of leather going forward either. It looks like they'll be made of custom Hermès canvas, rubber and other textiles.

There are a number of environmental changes to some other watch bands. The Sport Loop has 82 percent recycled yarn and is carbon neutral. In fact, when getting the new Apple Watch Series 9 with the Sport Loop, that whole package is carbon neutral. Meanwhile, the Nike sport band has "32 percent or more" recycled fluoroelastomer, while the Nike sport loop reuses yarn from previous seasons of bands. This is all part of a big environmental push that the company highlighted in today's event.

All of the active antitrust cases Apple is fighting around the world

William Gallagher's Avatar

Apple is facing court cases around the world

apple com leather case

Probably the most significant antitrust suit against Apple is the one in its own backyard — the Department of Justice has taken it to court. It's a peculiar case in how Apple stands accused of it doesn't do, but it's still the DOJ taking on one of America's greatest success stories.

To be specific, this case is being brought by the DOJ and the attorneys general of 16 states plus the District of Columbia. It claims that Apple has an illegal monopoly over smartphones, despite the iPhone having only 52% of the US market.

Apple is under investigation, is in court, or is in appeals, all over the world. Here are the latest updates.

It isn't true that lawsuits never end, it's just that they feel as if they don't. Nonetheless, when the Supreme Court declined to hear Epic Games appeal over its case against Apple, that was an end.

Except of course appeals are ongoing — and Epic Games is trying the same arguments in Australia. Here it's taking on Apple and Google simultaneously, for what is expected to be a trial lasting for months.

It concerns Apple's allegedly monopolistic control over its own App Store , which Epic Games alleges is unfairly preventing it telling customers of alternative payment systems.

There is also a separate class action store being brought against Apple's App Store by developers , and users, in Australia.

European Union

The EU's investigations in Apple have arguably been the most effective to date, with the company being forced by law to open up the App Store to rivals. It's also been required to cease anti-steering — where it prevents developers telling customers of alternatives.

Then the European Union has also forced Apple to open up the NFC technology in its iPhones, again to allow rival firms use of it.

Countries want Apple to allow rivals to use its iPhone NFC APIs

With all that done and the Digital Markets Act fully in place, you might expect that the EU would move on to other targets. It has. In March 2024, it fined Apple Music $2 billion for what it alleges is consumer harm in how the company is somehow preventing its vastly more successful rival Spotify from reaching customers.

Apple is in the process of taking the EU to court over that fine. Don't expect that to neatly be resolved, either, as the fine is borne of complaints Spotify started in 2019 and keeps on doing.

India may be basking in Apple and its suppliers greatly expanding their manufacturing presence in the country, but that hasn't stopped the Competition Commission of India (CCI) launching an investigation. Its probe covers both Apple and Google, and alleged unfair business practices.

In Apple's case, the country is also investigating anti-competitive behavior regarding its App Store.

In 2023 , the Japanese Fair Trade Commission came within a pixel of saying Apple has to allow third-party App Stores. It didn't quite go that far, but its years-long investigation into both Apple and Google found that they abuse their "superior bargaining position."

It specifically says that the two firms are a "problem under the AMA," Japan's Antimonopoly Act. The wording of its recommendations is oddly careful to avoid explicitly saying third-party stores must be allowed, yet the details around it saying rivals have to have an equal footing are implying exactly that.

This one started in 2022 , and it again sees both Apple and Google accused of being "anticompetitive and excessive". A Portuguese law school professor says that the firms' 30% cut of apps and in-app purchases is anticompetitive.

He's filed a class action suit which seeks to represent up to 2.9 million App Store users, and 3.6 million Google Play Store users.

Given that regions such as the European Union can in theory fine Apple up to 10% of its global revenue — and has fined it $2 billion over Apple Music — it's easy to think that Russia isn't even trying. In 2024 , Apple paid out $13.7 million to Russian authorities over its alleged anti-steering measures in the App Store.

In 2022, it paid $12.12 million in fines over a similar allegation of App Store market dominance abuse. AppleInsider noted at the time that this was equal to a single hour of Apple profits.

Also in 2022, Apple Pay ceased working in Russia. It was because of US sanctions over the war with Ukraine, but Russian users believed it was Apple's fault, and consequently sued the company .

The latest country to announce antitrust measures against Apple, as of June 6, 2024, Turkey is now specifically investigating the company's refusal to allow alternative payment systems on the App Store.

According to Reuters , this is still at the investigation stage, and comes alongside a general review of smartphones by the country's Competition Board.

The UK is in the throes of a general election, which under British law was called earlier than expected. One consequence of this is that the latest Parliamentary session is required to close down ahead of schedule, and that has threatened very many legal bills that were due to be debated.

UK Parliament

But after literally years in which the country created a Big Tech watchdog but didn't give it any power or authority over anyone, Britain rushed through a bill that affects Apple.

It's really a copy of the EU's already established laws and until it's put into practice, it's a bit nebulous. But it is intended to attack all the same allegations of anti-trust breaches that other countries have mounted, and other countries have collected high fines over.

What happens next

Apart from the certainty that other cases will follow, generally all that will happen in the short term is that the various cases will continue to rumble through their local jurisdiction. Apple will protest against it all, then when it fails to persuade judges, it will file appeals against the rulings.

Although it's not fair to say that Apple always loses. And, Epic lost most of its Fortnite battle with Apple.

And, in May 2024 , China decided that its App Store fees were fine. Naturally, this decision by the China Supreme People's Court is being appealed.

Remember in 1997, when “beleaguered” Apple (as the press always referred to them) was near-death, and Michael Dell suggested “shutting Apple down and giving the money to the shareholders?” Then Jobs returned, and the rest is history. What a journey it has been, from that failing company to a company so great, so powerful, so innovative and dominant that the world feels the need to put the brakes on it. These antitrust suits are actually a badge of honor. Of course, these countries are ultimately just haters. They know that they could never have produced anything remotely like Apple, and they resent the success of Apple and the country that did produce it.

Health experts are warning of new and highly contagious fungal strains after an NYC man in his 30s developed a sexually transmitted form of ringworm — the first reported case in the US.

“Healthcare providers should be aware that Trichophyton mentagrophytes type VII [TMVII] is the latest in a group of severe skin infections to have now reached the United States,” said Dr. Avrom S. Caplan , an assistant professor in NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s dermatology department.

Caplan co-authored a case study published Wednesday about an unidentified New Yorker who became infected with TMVII, with a rash appearing on his penis, buttocks and limbs.

Cases of TMVII have been on the rise in Europe, especially in men who have sex with men.

The man in the new case study had visited England, Greece and California. He reported having sex with men during his travels, none of whom disclosed similar skin issues.

“Since patients are often reluctant to discuss genital problems, physicians need to directly ask about rashes around the groin and buttocks, especially for those who are sexually active, have recently traveled abroad, and report itchy areas elsewhere on the body,” study senior author  Dr. John G. Zampella advised.

Zampella noted that infections caused by TMVII seem to respond to standard antifungal therapies such as the medication terbinafine (also known as Lamisil), but they can take months to clear up.

They also may be confused with lesions caused by eczema, which may delay treatment.

A different itchy and contagious skin infection that causes rashes similar to TMVII is proving to be a greater challenge for dermatologists.

An unidentified New Yorker became infected with Trichophyton mentagrophytes type VII, with a rash appearing on his penis, buttocks, and limbs. Doctors warn that TMVII rashes may be confused for lesions caused by eczema.

Trichophyton indotineae — which is widespread in India and was first confirmed in the US last year — often resists terbinafine treatment, the NYU Grossman School of Medicine researchers said .

They analyzed data from 11 men and women treated for Trichophyton indotineae in NYC hospitals between May 2022 and May 2023.

Seven of the patients received standard doses of terbinafine.

Their rashes did not clear up, perhaps because of genetic mutations in the fungus.

The antifungal pill itraconazole yielded better results, but Caplan cautioned that the drug can interfere with other medications and cause nausea and diarrhea, among other side effects.

Caplan said that while dermatologists should be on the lookout for TMVII and Trichophyton indotineae, US rates so far remain low.

His team hopes to expand their research into the two species of fungus over the next few months.

“These [initial] findings offer new insight into how some of the fungal skin infections spreading from South Asia can evade our go-to therapies,” Caplan said. “Beyond learning to recognize their misleading signs, physicians will need to ensure their treatment addresses each patient’s quality of life needs.”

How a fed-up carpenter found his stolen power tools — and 15,000 others

A carpenter deployed locator devices to track his tools after thieves stole from him twice, helping lead Howard County investigators to millions of dollars’ worth of pilfered equipment.

Key takeaways

Summary is AI-generated, newsroom-reviewed.

  • A Virginia carpenter used AirTags to track his tools after thieves stole from him twice.
  • His efforts led investigators to millions of dollars’ worth of pilfered tools in storage units.
  • Police have identified at least 80 victims, and several suspects are under investigation.

Did our AI help? Share your thoughts.

Twice before, this Virginia carpenter had awoken in the predawn to start his work day only to find one of his vans broken into. Tools he depends on for a living had been stolen, and there was little hope of retrieving them. Determined to shut down thieves, he said, he bought a bunch of Apple AirTags and hid the locator devices in some of his larger tools that hadn’t been pilfered. Next time, he figured, he would track them.

On Jan. 22, after a third break-in and theft, the carpenter said, he drove around D.C.’s Maryland suburbs for hours, following an intermittent blip on his iPhone, until he arrived at a storage facility in Howard County. He called police, who got a search warrant, and what they found in the locker was far more than just one contractor’s nail guns and miter saws.

#HoCoPolice have recovered approximately 15,000 stolen construction tools totaling $3-$5 million in what is believed to be one of the largest and most expansive theft cases in the region in recent years. More info and to recover stolen tools: https://t.co/ecfD8G2eFP pic.twitter.com/eHv5n8qqzQ — Howard County Police Department (@HCPDNews) May 23, 2024

The storage unit, stuffed with purloined power tools, led detectives to similar caches in other places in the next four months — 12 locations in all, 11 of them in Howard County — and the recovery of about 15,000 saws, drills, sanders, grinders, generators, batteries, air compressors and other portable (meaning easily stealable) construction equipment worth an estimated $3 million to $5 million, authorities said.

“One of the largest theft cases not only in Howard County but in this region,” Police Chief Gregory Der told reporters recently, standing in a county warehouse where the reclaimed loot is piled neatly along walls and stacked high on shelves. “The scope of the investigation is enormous and ongoing,” the chief said, adding, “We believe the tools were stolen from retail stores, businesses, vehicles, residential properties and construction sites.”

Though none of the prolific thieves has been arrested yet, Der said, “we are investigating several suspects for their roles in this massive theft scheme and expect charges soon.”

“Yes, yes, I hope they do,” said the 43-year-old carpenter in Sterling, Va., who helped crack the case and spoke on the condition of anonymity to protect his safety. “Jail for them.”

Howard police provided contact information for the carpenter, who said his home remodeling business employs 14 workers. He lost about 50 tools in the January theft and has gotten back a half-dozen of them, he said. He is hoping for more.

“They don’t know what they do to me,” he said of the thieves. “They steal our job.”

Seth Hoffman, a Howard County police spokesman, said investigators think most of the 15,000 or so tools were stolen in Northern Virginia and Pennsylvania. Howard County is just where they were stashed. He said about a quarter of the tools are in store boxes with labels that make them traceable. Some were stolen as long ago as 2014, he said. As for the thousands of loose and well-used tools now in the county warehouse, it’s hard to tell who owns them.

“Oh, man, it’s basically every kind of tool you can think of,” Hoffman said. “Basically any kind of tool you can put in a car or a pickup and drive away with. I mean, it’s some kind of inventory.”

Der said detectives have identified about 80 victims so far, “and we believe there are hundreds if not thousands more.” Police created an online form for people to fill out if they think their stolen tools might be somewhere in the piles. It asks for serial numbers, receipts, photos or any “identifying marks, initials, or numbers.” Authorities declined to discuss further details of the investigation

As of Wednesday, Hoffman said, 140 forms had been submitted since police announced the recovery last week, and officers are trying to reunite victims with their implements. “A huge undertaking,” was how Der described it.

“These thefts affect their livelihoods,” the chief said. “We’ve heard from victims who lost work because of their tools. It goes well beyond the cost of replacing the tools.”

A previous version of this article incorrectly referred to AirTags as GPS devices. They are a type of locator device, but they are not GPS trackers. The article has been corrected.

Humane Tells Customers to Stop Using AI Pin's Charge Case Due to Fire Risk

Customers who bought the $700 AI Pin from Humane should stop using the Charge Case Accessory that came with the device, Humane said in emails that went out today. The email, which was shared by The Verge , says the charging case "may pose a fire safety risk."

humane ai pin 1

Humane is working to find a new battery vendor, and the company says the problem is limited to the Charge Case. The AI Pin, Battery Boosters, and Charge Pad are not impacted, so the device can still be charged.

Customers should stop using and charging the Charge Case Accessory "immediately." Humane is not issuing a recall or refunding customers, but it will be providing customers with two months of the Humane subscription for free.

The AI Pin, which launched in November, is a standalone device that was designed specifically for AI. It attaches to a clothing item using a magnetic battery system, and it responds to questions and queries. There is a "laser ink display" that is able to project information onto the user's hand, and a built-in camera.

Humane's AI Pin did not fare well in reviews, and it was widely criticized for its poor performance.

Humane warns AI Pin owners to ‘immediately’ stop using its charging case

The company says it found an issue with its battery cells..

A photo of the Humane AI Pin with several accessories.

Humane is telling AI Pin owners today that they should “immediately” stop using the charging case that came with its AI gadget. There are issues with a third-party battery cell that “may pose a fire safety risk,” the company wrote in an email to customers (including  The Verge ’s David Pierce, who  reviewed it when it came out ).

Humane says it has “disqualified” that vendor and is moving to find another supplier. It also specified that the AI Pin itself, the magnetic Battery Booster, and its charging pad are “not affected.” As recompense, the company is offering two free months of its subscription service, which is required for most of its functionality. The company didn’t say if it will offer a replacement charging case, only that it “will share additional information” after investigating the issue.

The company seemingly hasn’t communicated the battery issue otherwise, either on its website or its X account .

Here is Humane’s full email:

Out of an abundance of caution, we are reaching out today to ask that you immediately stop using and charging your Charge Case Accessory due to an issue with certain battery cells for the Charge Case Accessory. Upon receiving a single report of a charging issue while using a third-party USB-C cable and third-party power source, we identified a quality issue with the battery cell supplied by a third-party vendor used in your Charge Case Accessory. Our investigation determined that the battery supplier was no longer meeting our quality standards and that there is a potential that certain battery cells supplied by this vendor may pose a fire safety risk. As a result, we immediately disqualified this battery vendor while we work to identify a new vendor to avoid such issues and maintain our high quality standards. The issue identified is isolated only to certain battery cells used in the Charge Case Accessory and is not related to the Charge Case Accessory hardware design. Importantly, Humane’s Ai Pin, its Battery Booster(s) and Charge Pad are not affected as the disqualified vendor does not supply batteries or any other components of those Humane products, and are safe for continued use.  While we know this may cause an inconvenience to you, customer safety is our priority at Humane. We design Ai Pin and related accessories with safety top of mind, and rigorously test and certify them to applicable US and international safety standards. We appreciate your understanding and will be providing you with two additional months free of the Humane subscription.  Rest assured we are committed to your safety and satisfaction and will share additional information when we have concluded our investigation. The Humane Team

Humane did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
