To be able to write an effective article, one must follow the correct format and the following steps given below.

• To begin with writing an article, one should be very clear of the ideology that needs to be followed throughout. It is also important to given an apt TITLE/HEADING to the article. The title can be given after completing the body of the article, to deliver justice to the content.
• Next comes the name of the writer (you, in this case). It should be mentioned just below the heading.

• Expository article – The most common type of article which allows the writer to put out information on any particular topic without the influence of their opinions.
• Argumentative article – An article in which an author poses a problem or an issue, renders a solution to the proposed problem and provides arguments to justify why their suggestions/solutions are good.
• Narrative article – An article in which the author has to narrate mostly in the form of a story.
• Descriptive article – An article written with the aim of providing a vivid description that would allow the readers to visualise whatever is being described. Using the right adjectives / adjective phrases is what will help you write a descriptive article.
• Persuasive article – An article aimed at persuading or convincing the readers to accept an idea or a point of view.

Writing an article takes a lot of effort on the side of the writer. Content writers/creators, bloggers, freelance writers and copywriters are people who have mastered the art of article writing, without which they would not be able to make their mark as a writer of any kind.

In order to be able to write an article that makes sense in the first place, you have to keep a few things in mind.

• The first and foremost thing that you have to take care of when you are sitting down to write your article is to check if you are well aware of the topic you are going to write on.
• The second thing that you have to ask yourself is why you are writing the article.

If you know all the information about the topic you are going to write about, a good hand over the language, a knack to keep it simple and interesting throughout, you can write a good article.

What is the format of an article?

The article should have a title/heading and a description that states what the article is about. The body of the article can be split into 3 to 5 paragraphs according to the volume of content with respect to the topic you are discussing. You can have subheadings and use bullet points wherever possible. Make sure your introduction makes people want to read the whole article and your conclusion leaves them satisfied.

How many paragraphs should there be in an article?

An article should have a minimum of 3 to 4 paragraphs. The writer is, however, given the choice to present the content in more than four paragraphs, if it would be better for the article.

People produce articles in order to express their own views, opinions, or arguments. There are some concerns that people are concerned about in general. The following is the procedure for writing an article: (i) Gather necessary information (Content) (ii) Arrange in a logical order

Question 1.

In today’s age of stress and anxiety, the children need to understand the importance of sleep, meditation and yoga over social networking and the use of the cell phone. Write an article of 120 words on ‘Concentration and Composure’, the need of the hour. You can take hints from the unit ‘Health and Medicine’ of the Main Course Book. (Board Term-12013, Set 5007) (5 marks) Answer: Title: Concentration and Composure, the Need of the Hour Modem time is the time of advancement in all fields which demands an extra effort on the part of everyone. Advances in science have sparked a renewed interest in social networking, as well as an increase in children’s cell phone usage. These gadgets keep them awake till late at night, disrupting their sleep patterns. As a result, people are uneasy in the morning, and their alertness and focus are harmed. This results in a loss of energy as well. People should understand the value of sleep, which is a gift to us. Sleep deprivation is linked to a variety of health issues , including diabetes, obesity, and depression. As a result, children must be taught the importance of getting enough sleep in order to re-energize. Meditation and yoga can greatly assist them in conquering their insomnia. All the body activities will return to their normal self and they will feel refreshed.

(Board Term-12012, Set EC2,040) (5 marks) Answer: Title: High Tech Devices – A Boon or Bane In the fast-changing scenario, the high-tech devices have flooded the market. All the credit goes to science which helps us in advancing in any field. Modem age is better known as the Science Age. Some people misuse technology and fail to take advantage of science’s wonders. Today’s youth can be observed chatting, surfing, playing video games, and doing other activities. Growing up in the digital environment has made these things a part of life. All of this, though, is guiding our youngsters down the wrong path. They’ve become distracted, which has hampered their social and intellectual development. They must realise how beneficial this high-tech equipment is to us. They must be educated on the benefits of cautious usage of these devices. We can obtain any and every information regarding a variety of topics that we would otherwise be unaware of.

Answer: Importance of Physical Health in our Lives A healthy mind lives in a healthy body. This is a proverb that everyone must have heard or read. But very few pay attention to it. These teenagers are usually found sitting in front of the television, watching shows. They do not engage in any physical activity outside. They are seen taking public transportation to school rather than cycling or walking. Today’s children like eating junk food and drinking aerated beverages, both of which are high in calories and hazardous to growing children. Such youngsters are more likely to develop diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and stroke later in life. It’s a health risk. It is also linked to higher rates of certain types of cancer.

However, it is widely acknowledged that discipline is the key to fixing these issues. There are numerous therapy options, however, exercise provides far more benefits than any other type of weight loss. Exercise not only helps you lose weight, but it also improves your fitness and flexibility, as well as the smoothness of your skin. You are Keerti/Kunal. Write an article in about 150 words on the importance of afforestation and maintaining a green cover in the country to prevent pollution and global warming. (5 marks) Answer: Importance of Afforestation Forests are a gift of nature to mankind. Man has relied on trees for wood, fire, food, and other necessities since the dawn of humanity. But, in recent years, man has begun to tear down trees for his own selfish gain. He has become uninterested in them. Tree planting has now become one of the most important topics that we should not only be aware of but actively practice on a personal level. Given the multiple environmental benefits of trees and plants, it becomes critical for us to preserve greenery, which is essential for maintaining the ecological balance in our world. They made certain that their establishments had lovely gardens in full bloom. We must understand that trees help to manage our climate and keep global warming at bay. They help to avoid soil erosion as well as water filtration. The ground, however, has become dry and unproductive as a result of deforestation. Answer: Importance of Educating the Girl Child To the majority of parents, it appears to be a waste of money. We must realise that when we educate a man, we are educating an individual, and when we teach a woman, we are educating a family. Education is advantageous to both the female and her family. A well-educated girl can make informed decisions and combat social ills such as child marriage, female infanticide, dowry, and domestic violence. It is a truth that educated mothers would always educate their girls since they understand that a boy and a girl have the same learning abilities and interests. Educating a girl child entails raising her job standards and combating workplace gender discrimination. So, for the wholesome progress of our society and the upliftment of our society, it is a must to educate the girl child.

There is absolutely nothing nutritional about fast food. Fast food simply feeds hunger and/or your immediate craving. Fast food does not feed your body in the form of usable lasting energy or building materials, the essence your body thrives on for life itself. (Board Term-12012, Set EC2,038) (5 marks) Answer: Health Hazards of Fast Food In modem times, fast food is rapidly replacing the nutritious food cooked in the kitchen. This is due to the fact that it is quick and simple to prepare.

Pizza, hamburgers, pre-sweetened cereals, chips, noodles, and processed goods are all readily available in the market. These foods are devoid of any nutritional value. Rather, they are high in cholesterol, sugar, and sodium, while being lacking in fiber, antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. These foods are potentially harmful to one’s health. They raise blood pressure, which can lead to hypertension and heart problems. It can also develop chronic degenerative diseases. They merely satisfy our appetite as well as our current need. Everyone should realise the importance of healthy and nutritious food and should say no to fast food. Parents should ensure that their children eat healthy, homemade food. Children should also break the shackles of unhealthy food and follow a diet chart suggested by their parents.

Writing: Exercise 6 (Writing an article)

This is the final exercise of Paper 1 and 2. It can be an article, a report or a review writing. We’ll look at articles here.

You will be given a topic (more like a question to ponder up on) on which you have to write your views and opinions. This can either be a two-sided article (for and against) or a one-sided article (just your opinion). It is up to you to decide.

The topics usually given for this exercise are easy enough that you can come up with points right there in the exam, but it is good if you read upon various issues from around the word (obesity, technological influences, environmental issues, animal welfare, teenager issues etc).

So here’s how to attempt this question:

• Before you start it is a good idea that you come up with a plan . Use the blank space below the question to make your plan, in pencil. In your plan write down the answers to these questions:
• The audience : this will be specified in the question (it is almost always a school magazine). So when you write, keep in mind that you need to write to that audience. Your language, tone and vocabulary should reflect this.
• Is my article going to be two-sided or one-sided?  If you know a lot about the topic and can weigh up the pros and cons, then go for two-sided. If you’re not too knowledgeable about it, stick to one-sided.
• How do I introduce the topic? Start off by saying what the topic is and how important the topic is in today’s world. Why it is such a problem? Or is it a problem?
• What’s in the body ? Write down three points . (If it’s two-sided write two pros and two cons) . You will develop your body based on these points. A few points will be given in your question paper, and you can use those!
• How will I conclude the article? You need to sum up your points and give your final opinion (even if it’s two-sided, give your final opinion on the matter).
• Organise . By now, you’ve pretty much come up with the contents of your article. Now organise your points into paragraphs.
• One-sided Article: Paragraph 1: Introduction
• Paragraph 2: First point with justification (or counter-argument)
• Paragraph 3: Second point with justification (or counter-argument)
• Paragraph 4: Opposing point which you contradict (here, you state a point said by people who have a different opinion from yours and explain why they are wrong. This is called argument and   counter-argument )
• Paragraph 5: Conclusion- summary, (solution?), repeat your opinion
• Two-sided Article: Paragraph 1: Introduction
• Paragraph 2: Advantages/’For’
• Paragraph 3: Disadvantages/’Against’
• Paragraph 4: Conclusion- Summary and final opinion
• Write . Use a variety of connecting words and argumentative phrases . Examples:
• Expressing opinions: I agree/ disagree with the above statement that
• In my opinion
• I believe that
• I am in favour of
• I am against the idea of

Here’s an example of a  one-sided article . This is one-sided because, even though it weighs up both ‘for’ and ‘against’ points, in each paragraph it contradicts the ‘for’ points and alludes to the same conclusion that zoos should be abolished. This is called the argument/counter-argument format.

• Use your own points , words and phrases as far as possible. The more original your content is, the better.
• Give a suitable title
• Keep to the word limit 150-200 words. Exceeding a little over 200 is not a problem.
• Always have an introduction and conclusion
• Always organise your points into paragraphs . One para for each point (one-sided) or all advantages in one para and disadvantages in another para (two-sided) is the ideal format.
• A final opinion has to be given.
• Punctuation, spelling and grammar is very important. Check your writing once you’re done.

For the extended paper 2, 30 minutes should suffice to answer this question. Spend 10 minutes to come up with a plan, 15 minutes to organise and write your article. Use the 5 minutes left to read over your article, make changes and correct spelling, grammar and punctuation errors.

Hi, this post was really helpful, but I have a question. Is it ok to take a stand (for or against) in magazine article writing? It is not a persuasive writing.

It’s preferable to remain neutral when it comes to magazine articles unless the specific topic you are addressing in the article expects you to take a stand for something, then go for it.

50 Writing Prompts for All Grade Levels

Sometimes students need a little push to activate their imaginations.

The collection of prompts below asks young writers to think through real or imagined events, their emotions, and a few wacky scenarios. Try out the ones you think will resonate most with your students. 

As with all prompts, inform students that their answers should be rated G and that disclosing dangerous or illegal things they’re involved in will obligate you to file a report with the administration or school counselors. Finally, give students the option of writing “PERSONAL” above some entries that they don’t want anyone to read. We all need to let scraggly emotions run free in our prose sometimes.

If your class uses daybooks (an approach recommended in Thinking Out Loud: The Student Daybook as a Tool to Foster Learning ), wait for composition notebooks to go on sale at Target, the Dollar Store, or Walmart for $0.50 a piece. To organize the daybook, direct young writers to leave the first three pages blank and number and date each entry—adding these entries to a table of contents that they create as they work so they can return to specific entries later. 

High School Prompts

• Should cameras on drones watch all public spaces to prevent crime, or is that a violation of privacy? 
• Do Americans have it too easy? Why do you think that?
• What causes racism?
• The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation hires you as a consultant to determine how best to use $20 billion to save the world. What’s your plan?
• What’s the worst thing about the internet? 
• Would you rather be very beautiful or very smart? Explain.
• You can save one object before your house burns down. What is it? What makes that object important to you?
• How much control over your life do you have? What makes you say that? 
• Describe your ideal life 15 years from now. What is something you can do every day to reach that goal?
• What would your friends say is your most lovable quality? Describe that quality. 
• What is something scary that you would like to try? What makes it scary for you? How might you overcome that fear?
• What things do you conscientiously do to feed your brain?
• What are three of your most profound learning experiences? Where and when did they occur?
• By age 18, the average American has seen 200,000 acts of violence on TV, including 40,000 murders. What is it about television violence that is so compelling to people?
• Would you rather be loved or respected? Because?
• Does social media represent individuals authentically? Explain with examples. 
• Imagine that it’s the last day of high school and you’ve been asked by a teacher to say a few words that summarize the events that have occurred over the last four years that are most meaningful to you. What do you say? 

Middle School Prompts

• Which classmate would be the best to lead us through a zombie apocalypse? Why? 
• What real-life situations would work out better for you if you were a different gender? Why?
• How can you tell when someone your age is feeling insecure? Are most people more insecure or anxious than they let on?
• If the internet were to crash forever, what would the benefits be for you? The drawbacks?
• Write a scene that features a) a classmate, b) $100 million, and c) magical shoes. 
• What three features should your future house have? Why?
• If you starred in a television show about your life, what would the show be called? What genre would it be? (Examples: comedy, drama, thriller, romance, action-adventure, fantasy, superhero, soap opera, reality, game show, space adventure, Western, tragedy, etc.) Summarize the plot of an episode. 
• In the future, what extreme sports will people be talking about?
• Is your ethnicity an important part of your identity? How so? 
• You get to take one book, one food item, and one famous person (living or dead) to a deserted island. What and who do you take? Why?
• Write a powerfully supportive email to yourself 10 years from now. Send that email to yourself using FutureMe.org . 
• You have been selected to be king or queen of your school. What are five rules that every kid should follow at your school? What should the punishment be for rule breakers?
• What do the five friends you hang out with most have in common? How are you most like them? How are you different from them?
• What contributes to someone becoming a bully? What can help stop someone from bullying?
• Do you make friends slowly or quickly? Describe how one of your important friendships evolved.
• Should we fear failure? Explain.
• If a wizard could tell you anything about your future, what would you most like to know?
• Do you believe in luck? Are you superstitious? How so? If not, why do you think some people are?

Elementary School Prompts

• I wish my teachers knew that . . .
• What’s the most beautiful person, place, or thing you’ve ever seen? Share what makes that person, place, or thing so special. 
• Which is better, giant muscles or incredible speed? Why?
• What is your most difficult subject in school? Why is it difficult? What can you do to get better at that subject?
• Rewrite “Hansel and Gretel” from the witch’s perspective.
• Describe a scary situation that you’ve experienced.
• What is your first memory? Describe it.
• You wake up tomorrow with a silly superpower that makes you famous. What is that silly power? How does it lead to your becoming an international superstar? 
• Are you a good loser? Explain. 
• What are examples of things you want versus things you need? 
• Last Friday, you were given one wish by a magical panda. You tried so hard to make the wish positive, but after the whacked-out events that unfolded over the weekend, you regret ever meeting that tricky panda. What did you ask for, and what happened?
• I wish my friends . . . 
• Describe a routine that you often or always do (in the morning, when you get home, Friday nights, before a game, etc.).
• What things do all kids know that adults do not?
• What TV or movie characters do you wish were real? Why? 

After they’ve finished an entry, ask students to read their work aloud or exchange daybooks for a read-around. If you give the entries written feedback, show that their work is respected by using a sticky note or scratch paper. 

You might also incorporate background writing music one day a week—say on “Music Monday.” For some examples of music you might use in class, Pitchfork has an article called “ The 50 Best Ambient Albums of All Time .” My favorite album for composing is the Birdy soundtrack by Peter Gabriel—a good one for older kids. Other Edutopia staff and bloggers like writing to Coffitivity , Noisli , Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven by Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and Alcest’s Souvenirs d’un Autre Monde .

Don’t forget to write along with your students. Why should they have all the fun?
