The purpose of Justice for Children is to provide a full range of advocacy and services for abused and neglected children; that includes pro-bono legal advocacy, public policy monitoring, guidance through a complex child protective system, professional referrals, mental health services, court watch, research, education, and emotional support. The following is a brief explanation of our advocacy and services.

WHAT WE BELIEVE

  • Every child has the right to grow up in a safe and nurturing environment
  • Child abuse is a crime and should be treated as such
  • Child abuse costs American taxpayers more than $300 billion dollars a year
  • The primary focus of communities, child protective agencies, police and courts should be on the safety of the child rather than the rights of the parents
  • Attorneys appointed to represent children should have an enforceable obligation to the child
  • When a child reports being sexually molested or physically abused, the child should be protected until and unless the report is proven false
  • No child should be forced to spend unsupervised time with their abuser
  • Child protective agencies should be held accountable for negligent failure to protect children in their charge, Society has a moral obligation to protect our children from abuse and neglect
  • The safety and rights of the child are paramount to the rights of any caretaker

Justice for Children provides guidance through the legal and judicial processes, assists in court watch, and advocates on behalf of children to law enforcement and other governmental agencies. JFC connects individuals with legal resources including pro bono attorneys and helps with protective orders. Justice for Children JFC is also involved in a variety of legal research projects and has contributed to amicus briefs, researching legal issues and providing data on important legal issues affecting the rights of abused children.

Justice for Children assists and refers several thousand callers annually through the complicated and unsympathetic maze of governmental agencies established to protect abused children. Advocating for an abused or neglected child takes on many different forms of participation and involvement. These include researching and gathering supporting documentation; reviewing supporting documentation; referring persons to professionals; guiding them through the legal and judicial process; providing legal assistance with protective orders; initiating child abuse investigations; serving as a liaison to law enforcement and other governmental agencies; generating advocacy correspondence and amicus briefs; acting as facilitator of professional services; court watch; and providing pro bono legal representation and connecting persons with attorneys.

Justice for Children has proposed and drafted legislation to improve the laws pertaining not only to child abuse and child protection, but also laws concerning the funding for protective services. We have also presented legislation designed to make the legal process more child-friendly. Additionally, because of its experience in this area, Justice for Children receives numerous requests to provide testimony regarding various pieces of legislation around the country.

Justice for Children has traditionally provided information and materials to combat child abuse and to educate the public of the signs and symptoms of child abuse or neglect in its efforts to interrupt its dismal cycle. In 2012, it is initiating a project called “Just in Time”, to develop a series of informational and instructional modules to be placed on its website. Each is designed specifically to aid a field on the front lines of identifying and re-mediating child abuse: the community, medical first responders, school personnel, pediatricians, court personnel, and counseling professionals.

We seek to collaborate with other concerned national and community leaders, professionals, institutions, non-profit organizations, and governmental agencies to further a common goal of solving the deficiencies in our present child protective systems. By expanding our relationships within the community and on a national level, we are working to create a system that will effectively handle a child’s initial report of abuse, provide immediate safety, and ultimately, prosecute and convict the child abuser.

Justice for Children’s expert opinion continues to be recognized and valued by local and national media, legal and medical professionals, child abuse experts, and various other children’s rights organizations. We have been featured on ABC’s Primetime Live, ABC’s prime-time documentary entitled ‘Crimes Against Children,’ a PBS documentary entitled ‘Boy Crying, Baby Crying,” as well as appearances on Good Morning America, Donahue, the Discovery channel’s “Justice Files,’ HBO and in 2011, the BBC.

What is Considered Child Abuse in Arizona?

In Arizona, child abuse involves causing or permitting a child to suffer physical injury, emotional distress, or other danger to their health or welfare. It also involves acts in which someone charged with the care and welfare of a child intentionally or recklessly puts that child’s well-being at risk.

ARS § 13-3623

Arizona Revised Statutes ( ARS § 13-3623 ) outline what is considered to be child abuse (as well as vulnerable adult abuse) in Arizona. The law states that child abuse is any act or omission that causes a child to suffer harm, either intentionally or as a result of criminal negligence. This includes acts of physical assault, emotional abuse, false imprisonment, and sexual abuse.

In Arizona law, a child is considered anyone under the age of 18. A vulnerable adult, on the other hand, is someone who is 18 years or older but cannot protect themselves from abuse, neglect, or mistreatment due to physical or mental impairment.

The statute also covers specific circumstances that would constitute child/vulnerable adult abuse. This includes allowing a child or vulnerable adult to enter or remain in a hazardous structure or vehicle. It also includes engaging in or allowing for the emotional abuse of a vulnerable adult in a healthcare or caregiving setting.

The penalties for child abuse in Arizona vary depending on the circumstances surrounding the alleged abuse as well as the intent behind the alleged abuse. Situations that are likely to cause serious physical injury or death can result in more serious punishments than situations involving other forms of child abuse. Also, intentional acts of child abuse can result in harsher punishments than unintentional acts of child abuse.

Like other dangerous crimes against children in Arizona , child abuse can result in serious felony charges and other lifelong consequences. A Phoenix child abuse lawyer can help you understand the severity of the charges against you and what punishments you may be facing as a result of the accusations.

Types of Child Abuse

Child abuse can take various forms, each with serious implications for a child’s well-being and distinct legal consequences under Arizona law. Below are some of the different types of child abuse in Arizona.

Physical Abuse

Physical abuse involves causing a child to suffer bodily harm through actions such as hitting, shaking, burning, or other forms of physical assault that allow for physical injury, impairment of bodily function, or disfigurement. In Arizona, violent crimes that are committed against children can lead to felony charges, with the severity depending on whether the acts were intentional, reckless, or negligent.

Emotional Abuse

Emotional abuse includes behaviors that harm a child’s self-worth or emotional well-being, such as constant criticism, threats, rejection, or withholding of love and support. In Arizona, someone can be charged with child abuse if, as the child’s caregiver, they cause the child to suffer from impaired mental faculties.

Emotional abuse also includes situations in which they cause the child to experience anxiety, depression, withdrawal, aggressive behavior, or social dysfunction which can be diagnosed by a doctor or psychologist. The law also states that acts of sexual abuse can result in serious emotional injury.

Someone can also be charged with child abuse if they subject a vulnerable adult to emotional abuse within the context of caregiving or a healthcare setting.

Sexual Abuse

Another form of abuse outlined in the Arizona child abuse statute is sexual abuse .  Sexual abuse encompasses any form of sexual contact or exploitation of a child. This includes engaging in or allowing another adult to engage in sexual acts with a minor , including inappropriate touching, child molestation , statutory rape , incest, or using a child for child pornography .

Child Neglect

Child neglect is the failure to provide for a child’s basic needs, including adequate food, shelter, medical care, and supervision. Under Arizona’s child abuse law, child neglect can result in a child abuse charge if, by neglecting a child, someone causes them to suffer from physical injury, serious physical injury, or death.

What are the Penalties for a Child Abuse Conviction in Arizona?

The penalties for child abuse in Arizona can vary depending on various factors, including the severity of the alleged abuse, the severity of the child’s injuries, and the intent behind the alleged act of abuse. Below are the penalties for acts of child abuse in the state of Arizona.

Circumstances Likely to Produce Death or Serious Physical Injury

In many situations, child abuse can put a child or vulnerable adult in danger of serious physical injury or death. In a child abuse case, something can be considered to cause serious physical injury if it:

  • Creates a reasonable fear of death;
  • Causes serious permanent disfigurement;
  • Causes significant physical pain;
  • Causes serious health impairment;
  • Causes loss of, or impairment of, an organ or limb; or
  • Is the result of sexual abuse.

If an adult places the child or vulnerable adult in a situation that could lead to serious physical injury or death, they may be charged with a felony, regardless of whether or not the victim actually suffers injury. Below are the different felony charges associated with these kinds of child abuse:

  • If done intentionally : Class 2 felony , punishable by anywhere from 3 to 12.5 years in prison, up to $150,000 in fines, or both.
  • If done recklessly : Class 3 felony , punishable by anywhere from 2 to 8.75 years in prison, up to $150,000 in fines, or both.
  • If done with criminal negligence : Class 4 felony , punishable by anywhere from 1 and 3.75 years in prison, up to $150,000 in fines, or both.

Additionally, if the act of child abuse was done intentionally, and the victim was younger than 15 years old, then the alleged offender may face more severe punishments, especially if they have a prior criminal history of other dangerous crimes against children.

Circumstances Other Than Those Likely to Produce Death or Serious Physical Injury

Other acts of child abuse that do NOT place the child or vulnerable adult at risk of serious injury can result in different punishments. If someone causes a child or vulnerable adult to suffer physical injury or, as a caregiver, places them in a position where their health or safety is endangered or allows another adult to place them in an endangering situation, they may face the following punishments:

  • If done intentionally : Class 4 felony, punishable by between 1 and 3.75 years in prison, up to $150,000 in fines, or both.
  • If done recklessly : Class 5 felony , punishable by between 0.5 and 2.5 years in prison, up to $150,000 in fines, or both.
  • If done with criminal negligence : Class 6 felony , punishable by between 0.33 and 2 years in prison, up to $150,000 in fines, or both.

Emotional Abuse of a Vulnerable Adult in a Healthcare or Caregiving Setting

If someone acting as a caregiver or healthcare provider inflicts emotional abuse on a vulnerable adult, they could be charged with a Class 6 felony, which can result in anywhere between 4 months to up to 2 years in prison, $150,000 in fines, or both.

Additional Consequences That Come With Child Abuse Charges

In addition to the above legal consequences, someone accused of child abuse may suffer from a number of other additional consequences. This includes things like the loss of parental rights, damage to one’s reputation, and social stigma. In some situations, child protective services may intervene, leading to the removal of the child from the home and placement in foster care.

Additionally, a felony conviction could cause someone to lose their right to own firearms as well as their right to vote, and may lead to them having difficulty finding employment or housing following their conviction.

Why You Need an Experienced Criminal Defense Attorney

Child abuse charges carry significant legal and personal consequences which can negatively impact multiple aspects of your life, especially if you are a parent. If you have been accused of child abuse, the best thing you can do for yourself is to seek legal advice from a local criminal defense attorney.

Child abuse attorneys can help you fight against these charges and ensure your future is protected from the harsh consequences of a child abuse conviction. Additionally, they provide invaluable support and guidance during what can be a highly stressful and emotionally challenging time.

At Belén Law Firm in Phoenix, AZ, our experienced criminal defense attorneys can help develop a strong defense strategy on your behalf, fight for your innocence, and/or negotiate with prosecutors to help you secure a favorable deal. Additionally, we can ensure that your rights are protected throughout the legal process, providing you with a fair chance at freedom.

Potential Defenses for Child Abuse in Arizona

There are a number of different defense strategies that attorneys will use to fight against child abuse charges. Some common defenses to alleged child abuse include:

  • The accusations are false
  • Having an alibi for the alleged crime
  • The injury was the result of unintentional, accidental action
  • A lack of evidence
  • The action was committed in self-defense
  • Law enforcement violated the law in their investigation

False Allegations of Child Abuse in a Child Custody Case

Unfortunately, some parents will accuse the other parent of child abuse in order to secure full custody of their children, going as far as to accuse the other parent of physical abuse, emotional assault, or even statutory sexual assault.

If you have wrongfully been accused of child abuse by an ex-spouse or co-parent, contact an experienced Arizona criminal defense attorney as soon as possible. They can help ensure your name is cleared and that you have a chance at retaining full or shared custody of your child or children.

Mark Zuckerberg, head of US tech giant Meta

A New Mexico judge on Thursday granted Mark Zuckerberg’s request to be dropped from a lawsuit that alleges his company has failed to protect young users on its social media platforms from sexual exploitation.

The case is one of many filed by states, school districts and parents against Meta and its platforms over concerns about child exploitation. Beyond courtrooms around the U.S., the issue has been a topic of  congressional hearings  as lawmakers and parents are growing increasingly concerned about the effects of social media on young people’s lives.

In New Mexico, Attorney General Raúl Torrez  sued Meta and Zuckerberg late last year  following an undercover online investigation.

While granting Zuckerberg’s request, Judge Bryan Biedscheid dismissed Meta’s motion seeking to dismiss the state’s claims, marking what Torrez described as a crucial step for the case to proceed against the social media giant.

“For decades, Meta Platforms have prevented nearly every legal challenge against them from proceeding,” Torrez said in a statement. “Today, the New Mexico Department of Justice brought that era to an end and is the first case by a state attorney general to raise child sexual exploitation claims, which can now be addressed. All social media platforms that harm their users should be on notice.”

Separately, claims were levied  in late October  by the attorneys general of 33 states — including California and New York — that Instagram and Facebook include features deliberately designed to hook children and contribute to a youth mental health crisis.

As for Zuckerberg, Biedscheid said he wasn’t persuaded by the state’s arguments that the executive should remain a party to the New Mexico lawsuit, but he noted that could change depending on what evidence is presented as the case against Meta proceeds.

Torrez’s office said it will continue to assess whether Zuckerberg should be named individually in the future.

Attorneys for Meta had argued during the hearing that prosecutors would not be able to establish that the company had specifically directed its activities to New Mexico residents, meaning there would be personal jurisdiction for which the company could be held liable. They said the platforms are available worldwide and that users agree to the terms of service when signing up.

Prosecutors told the judge that New Mexico is not seeking to hold Meta accountable for its content but rather its role in pushing out that content through complex algorithms that proliferate material that can be sensational, addictive and harmful.

The design features and how people interact with them are the issue, said Serena Wheaton, an assistant attorney general in the consumer protection division.

Earlier this month, Torrez announced  charges against three men  who were accused of using Meta’s social media platforms to target and solicit sex with children. The arrests were the result of a monthslong undercover operation in which the suspects connected with decoy accounts set up by the state Department of Justice.

That investigation began in December around the time the state filed its lawsuit against the company.

At the time of the arrests, Torrez placed blame on Meta executives — including Zuckerberg — and suggested that the company was putting profits above the interests of parents and children.

Meta has disputed those allegations, saying it uses technology to prevent suspicious adults from finding or interacting with children and teens on its apps and that it works with law enforcement in investigating and prosecuting offenders.

As part of New Mexico’s lawsuit, prosecutors say they have uncovered internal documents in which Meta employees estimate about 100,000 children every day are subjected to sexual harassment on the company’s platforms.

Trump’s lawyers ask judge to lift gag order imposed during New York trial

NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump’s lawyers are asking a New York judge to lift the gag order that barred the former president from commenting about witnesses, jurors and others tied to the criminal case that led to  his conviction  for falsifying records to cover up a potential sex scandal.

In a letter Tuesday, Trump lawyers Todd Blanche and Emil Bove asked Judge Juan M. Merchan to end the gag order, arguing there is nothing to justify “continued restrictions on the First Amendment rights of President Trump” now that the trial is over.

Among other reasons, the lawyers said Trump is entitled to “unrestrained campaign advocacy” in light of President Joe Biden’s  public comments  about the verdict last Friday, and continued public criticism of him by his ex-lawyer  Michael Cohen  and porn actor  Stormy Daniels , both key prosecution witnesses.

Trump’s lawyers also contend the gag order must go away so he’s free to fully address the case and his conviction with the first presidential debate  scheduled  for June 27.

The Manhattan district attorney’s office declined to comment.

Merchan issued Trump’s gag order on March 26, a few weeks before the start of the trial, after prosecutors raised concerns about the presumptive Republican presidential nominee’s propensity to attack people involved in his cases.

Merchan later expanded it to prohibit comments about his own family after Trump made social media posts attacking the judge’s daughter, a Democratic political consultant. Comments about Merchan and District Attorney Alvin Bragg are allowed, but the gag order bars statements about court staff and members of Bragg’s prosecution team.

Trump was convicted Thursday of 34 counts of falsifying business records arising from what prosecutors said was an attempt to cover up a hush money payment to Daniels just before the 2016 election. She claims she had a sexual encounter with Trump a decade earlier, which he denies. He is scheduled to be sentenced July 11.

Prosecutors had said they wanted the gag order to “protect the integrity of this criminal proceeding and avoid prejudice to the jury.” In the order, Merchan noted prosecutors had sought the restrictions “for the duration of the trial.” He did not specify when they would be lifted.

Blanche told the Associated Press last Friday that it was his understanding the gag order would expire when the trial ended and that he would seek clarity from Merchan, which he did on Tuesday.

“It’s a little bit of the theater of the absurd at this point, right? Michael Cohen is no longer a witness in this trial,” Blanche told the AP. “The trial is over. The same thing with all the other witnesses. So, we’ll see. I don’t mean that in any way as being disrespectful of the judge and the process. I just want to be careful and understand when it no longer applies.”

Trump has continued to operate under the belief that he’s still muzzled, telling reporters Friday at Trump Tower: “I’m under a gag order, nasty gag order.”

Referring to Cohen, Trump said, “I’m not allowed to use his name because of the gag order” before slamming his former lawyer-turned-courtroom foe as “a sleazebag.”

During the trial, Merchan held Trump in contempt of court, fined him $10,000 for violating the gag order and threatened to put him in jail if he did it again.

Trump’s use of the term “sleazebag” to describe Cohen just before the trial rankled prosecutors, but was not considered a gag order violation by the judge. Merchan declined to sanction Trump for an April 10 social media post, which referred to Cohen and Daniels, another key prosecution witness, by that insult.

The judge said at the time that Trump’s contention that he was responding to previous posts by Cohen that were critical of him “is sufficient to give” him pause on whether prosecutors met their burden in demonstrating that the post was out of bounds.

Election latest: 'Man with no integrity' - Labour takes aim at Rishi Sunak after latest party donation figures

Labour and the Lib Dems hit out at Rishi Sunak and the Tories after it's revealed businessman Frank Hester - who was embroiled in a racism row over comments he made about Diane Abbott - has given a further £5m to the party.

We're getting some reaction to the Douglas Ross U-turn now.

SNP campaign director, Stewart Hosie, said it was a "day of shame for the Tories".

He bemoaned "three-jobs Douglas Ross taking a seat from David Duguid to keep his third salary at Westminster.

"The way the Tories have treated Mr Duguid is indefensible. The nasty party just got nastier."

The people of Aberdeenshire North and Moray East "deserve a dedicated, full time MP and local champion", he added, before endorsing his candidate Seamus Logan.

Mr Logan himself said: "Irrespective of our political differences, it's clear David Duguid cared very deeply about his constituents - and his treatment at the hands of the Tory party will outrage many local families.

"I wish him a swift and full recovery."

"I give a commitment to people across Aberdeenshire North and Moray East that, if I'm elected on 4th July, I will be a champion for everyone who lives here - and I will always put the interests of our constituency first."

A major rescue operation was launched this morning in the Channel after it was reported that a migrant boat was in trouble.

Around 80 migrants have been rescued after the boat got into difficulty, according to the Press Association.

Some of the group are thought to have been pulled from the water.

Coastguard and lifeboat crews were called to help Border Force during the incident off the Kent coast on Thursday morning.

Sky News understands there are no fatalities or serious injuries at this stage.

A spokesperson for the Coastguard said they were "coordinating the response to a small boat incident in the channel".

"Coastguard helicopters from Lydd and Lee-on-Solent and RNLI lifeboats have been sent," they added.

An RNLI spokesperson said: "Dover RNLI all-weather lifeboat and Walmer inshore lifeboat were tasked by HM Coastguard to launch this morning (6 June) to an incident in the English Channel."

It has been "quite the 12 hours" in Scottish politics, says our Scotland correspondent Connor Gillies , after a U-turn by Douglas Ross on his decision to stand in the general election.

The situation is "really awkward" for the Scottish Conservatives after David Duguid claimed in a statement last night that he had been blocked from standing by the party.

Gillies says speculation had swirled about whether Mr Ross would go for the seat - and he'll now face "accusations of backstabbing and what discussions really have been happening behind closed doors".

In a statement posted to X last night, Mr Duguid appeared to be disappointed not to be selected.

"We haven't got a straight answer quite yet and we are hoping to get that very shortly around whether Douglas Ross has actually had a conversation with David Duguid," says Gillies.

"But this is difficult for the Conservative Party.

"Douglas Ross was trying to strike a pretty sombre tone.

"He said he didn't see himself being in this situation given he's U-turned on his pledge... so let's see what he's got to say to try and defend himself."

Scottish Conservative leader Douglas Ross has officially announced his plans to stand at the general election.

In a news conference, Mr Ross said he will today put himself forward as a candidate for the new seat of Aberdeenshire North and Moray East.

He paid tribute to his colleague and former Scotland Office minister David Duguid, who announced he has not been selected to stand for the party. Mr Duguid has recently developed "significant health issues", Mr Ross said.

"Unfortunately, and with real regret, the party management board concluded that David could not proceed as our candidate for the new seat," said the Scottish Conservative leader.

He added that after thinking "long and hard" and "considering all the options" for the past 12 hours, he has decided to put himself forward to run.

The constituency will be "competitive" and a "hard-fought contest" between the SNP and Scottish Conservatives, Mr Ross said.

"I've decided I need to lead from the front," he added.

"I will stand in the seat and I intend to beat the SNP, just as I've done in the past, so we can get focused on the top priorities of local people."

Mr Ross said he expected the SNP to "throw absolutely everything they've got" at him. But he said if local people "come together", the Tories can "keep the Nationalists out".

The other candidates standing in the constituency are:

  • Ian Bailey, Liberal Democrats;
  • Andrew Brown, Labour;
  • Seamus Logan, SNP.

Rishi Sunak is speaking now at the British Normandy Memorial in Ver-sur-Mer, where the 80th anniversary of D-Day is being commemorated.

Addressing the some 2,000 guests and veterans, the prime minister says: "We are here to honour the service of those who did [serve]."

He references several veterans and praises their resolve and sacrifice. Three of those he mentions are in attendance.

"We are humbled to be with you and for what you did that day, we will always be grateful," Mr Sunak says.

He praises their humility, adding that it is what makes them "the best of us".

"You risked everything, and we owe you everything.

"We can and we must pledge to never forget."

He asks those who can to rise as Dakota planes fly overhead, and leads a round of applause for the veterans in attendance.

Labour says Rishi Sunak has "proven he is a man with no integrity" after accepting another £5m donation from Frank Hester.

Party chair Anneliese Dodds said the prime minister was "too weak to return the money donated by a man who has made violent, misogynist, and racist remarks which belong nowhere near our politics".

"If Rishi Sunak had a backbone he’d have cut ties with Frank Hester months ago, returned the money and apologised properly to Diane Abbott," she said in a statement.

"Voters have a chance to turn the page on 14 years of sleaze and scandal on 4 July and vote for change with Labour."

'Sunak must personally intervene'

The Lib Dems have also had their say on the issue, with deputy leader Daisy Cooper saying:  "How low can Rishi Sunak's Conservatives go?"

She said spending the money would mean the party is "proudly funded by a man who made the most appalling racist and sexist comments".

"Ultimately the buck stops with Rishi Sunak. Sunak must personally intervene and make sure not a penny of this money is spent," said Ms Cooper.

Diane Abbott says a decision by the Conservatives to accept another donation from businessman Frank Hester is an "insult" to her and "all black women".

As we reported in our 8.36 post, the latest Electoral Commission data shows Mr Hester - who previously said Ms Abbott made him want to "hate all black women" and "should be shot" - has donated a further £5m to the Tories.

In a post to X, Ms Abbott said: "Rishi Sunak belatedly admitted Frank Hester's remarks that 'I made him hate all black woman and should be shot' were racist.

"Now it turns out Sunak accepted a further £5 million from him.

"An insult to me and all black women."

Douglas Ross is to stand to be the Conservative candidate in the Aberdeenshire North and Moray East constituency, Sky News understands.

It comes after former Scotland Office minister David Duguid revealed he had not been selected to stand in the seat for the Scottish Conservatives.

Mr Duguid had a recent bout of ill health and spent several weeks in hospital, butsaid he was looking forward to being involved in the election campaign.

Mr Ross has previously said he would not seek to become an MP, focusing instead on his role as an MSP at Holyrood.

John Healey has declined to say whether Labour will rule out raising taxes such as stamp duty and capital gains tax.

It comes after Jeremy Hunt challenged Sir Keir Starmer to explicitly say he will not hike property taxes if Labour win the election.

"There are dozens of specific taxes, the ones that are most important are those that cost working people the most," Mr Healey said.

Pressed on the issue, he repeated that Labour will not "raise taxes on working people" and said the party's plans "do not require us to start looking at raising taxes across the board".

He then repeatedly declined to answer questions on whether Labour will raise capital gains tax and stamp duty.

"I'm not going to go through a list, we could be spending the next hour doing this," he said.

"Where we have plans to change the taxes, we've spelt those out and we've said what that money that we can raise will be used to do," he added.

Shadow defence secretary John Healey says he is "disappointed" that blocked Labour candidate Faiza Shaheen has decided to stand as an independent.

Ms Shaheen, who initially won the Labour nomination for Chingford and Woodford Green, said she felt "disenfranchised" by the decision to remove her as a candidate, and accused the party of embodying a "hierarchy of racism" .

Mr Healey said he understands why she is "disappointed" but added that she went through "the process that all of us as candidates for Labour have had to go through".

"I'm disappointed she's standing as an independent and one of the really big changes that Keir Starmer has brought in... is to make sure that any allegations are treated through an independent process.

"Any suggestion that there are partial treatments for some people is entirely wrong."
