Once a session starts, the audience has 30s to answer (that delay is customizable). Then you can show the results and directly interact with them.

QuizZoodle requires no registration. If you would like to, you can provide an email address to receive reports and analytics.

QuizZoodle is for any professional who needs to interact with an audience: researcher, teacher, salesperson... It is also useful for individuals, for weddings, parties...

People interact through their own connected devices (smartphone, computer, laptop...)

When a session starts, a QRCode and a session code are displayed. The audience can connect at any time using those codes, which remain on screen during the whole presentation.

When you reach a slide that has a question or survey, a countdown shows up, and the audience is prompted to answer with their devices.

Kahoot! stands with Ukraine

Kahoot! is committed to supporting Ukrainian educators and learners affected by the current crisis. To protect the integrity of our platform and our users, we will suspend offering Kahoot!’s services in Russia, with the exception of self-study.

online presentation quiz

Ukrainian educators and learners need our support

We are deeply troubled and concerned by the violence and loss of life resulting from the Russian invasion of Ukraine. We stand with the people of Ukraine and we hope for the swiftest and most peaceful possible end to the current crisis.

Kahoot! has received a number of requests from schools and educators in Ukraine requesting the help of our services to continue teaching despite the disruption of the war. We have supported each of these and we are now offering Kahoot! EDU solutions for free for both K-12 and higher education institutions for one year to Ukrainian schools in need. In addition, we are fast-tracking translation and localization of the Kahoot! platform into Ukrainian.

Suspending commercial services and sales in Russia

Our commercial footprint in the Russian market is very limited. We do not have offices or representation in the country, nor do we have any physical operations or data services there. The overwhelming majority of our users in Russia are teachers and students using our free service.

Kahoot! is abiding by the international sanctions regime, and does not allow sales to sanctioned individuals or entities in Russia. Shortly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Kahoot! initiated a process to suspend offering of all commercial services in Russia. This includes but is not limited to online sales, assisted sales, app store sales and prohibiting sales to Russian corporations and organizations.

Prioritizing safe and secure use of the Kahoot! platform

As part of our mission to make learning awesome, and as education remains a fundamental human right, we offer teachers, students and personal users free access to our platform. We do this in more than 200 countries and regions in a spirit similar to public commons services, such as Wikipedia.

Similarly, inclusivity is one of Kahoot!’s overarching values. As such, our aim is to, whenever and wherever possible, offer children, schools and others the opportunity to use digital tools for impactful education and learning, irrespective of their background or location. This has been our guiding principle also for offering our service in Russia.

Among our first responses to the crisis was to swiftly expand our global moderation team’s monitoring on all Russia-related content to safeguard the integrity of the platform.

However, as the situation continues to escalate, it is vital that we are able to ensure that our platform is used according to our own guidelines and standards. Therefore, in addition to suspending sales, we will be taking all possible and necessary steps to suspend access to Kahoot! services in Russia, with the eventual exception of self-study mode which will feature only content verified by Kahoot!.

This will enable students, school children and other individual users to continue their learning journeys both safely and responsibly. We will continue to assess ways in which our services can be offered safely and responsibly to support all learners and educators, also those based in Russia.

Supporting our employees

At Kahoot!, we are not just a team in name, we are a team in practice. As such, we are committed to the well-being of our employees, especially those with ties to Ukraine, or those that in other ways are particularly affected by the war. We are providing these colleagues with any support we can.

Acknowledging the current situation, the Kahoot! Group made an emergency aid donation to Save the Children and the Norwegian Refugee Council. This is a contribution to support life-saving assistance and protection for innocent Ukrainian children, families and refugees.

As the situation in Ukraine continues to develop our teams across the company are actively monitoring the crisis so that we can respond in the most responsible and supportive way possible.

Our hearts go out to the people of Ukraine, their loved ones, and anyone affected by this crisis.

How to Create a Quiz for Your Online Classes Using Google Slides

How to Create a Quiz for Your Online Classes Using Google Slides | Quick Tips & Tutorial for your presentations

Quizzes are great tools to get your audience involved, as they need to participate and give their own answers. In fact, they are particularly useful when teaching children, as their attention gets diverted quite easily. This way, they will learn in an interactive and entertaining way.  Creating a quiz is not a complex thing to do, but it requires some time. In this tutorial, we are going to teach you how to create some question slides for your students using Google Slides . Let’s get started!

Creating the Main Page of the Quiz

Creating the “right answer” slide, creating the “wrong answer” slide, linking slides.

  • Open your Google Slides presentation.
  • Select or create the slide to which you want to add the quiz.
  • Type the title and the subtitle of your question using text boxes. Remember to use the fonts of the theme. The resulting slide will be coherent with the rest of the presentation and aesthetically appealing.
  • If you need to change the font, size or style of your text, use the edition tools in the toolbar.
  • Add images if you need them. If you are creating this interactive game for children, it is worth adding some cute pictures or drawings to make it more appealing. If you don’t know how to insert, crop or mask images , you can learn more about it in this tutorial. Here, we have embedded three different illustrations that will work as reply options.

Pro tip: if you need more images or illustrations go to the Alternative resources slide at the end of the presentation.

  • You need to add button-like shapes to your options. Later on, we will link each button to a “correct” or “wrong answer” slide. We are going to use circles for our example. In Insert, select Shape → Shapes → Oval.
  • Click and drag the cursor to add the circle.
  • Resize it clicking and dragging the squares of the outline. If you keep pressed Shift, you’ll create a perfect circle.
  • Change the color of the shape according to the colors of the theme.
  • Click Fill color and choose the hue that appears in the inside of the shape.
  • Click Border color and do the same for the border of the shape.
  • To add more buttons, keep pressing the Ctrl button while you click on your first button and drag the copy close to the image of the other animals. Pressing Shift at the same time will keep them aligned.

Pro Tip: You can add a shadow to your circles to make them look like real buttons. In the toolbar click on More (...) → Format options  → Drop shadow and choose the effect that suits you best. To learn more about how to apply effects to an image in Google Slides, you can read this tutorial. If the screen resolution of your computer is high enough, the More (...) button won’t appear. Instead, the “Format options” button will appear directly on the toolbar.

  • Let’s continue with the buttons. As we have three options, we are going to name them A, B and C. Click on each circle and type directly into the shape.
  • Change the font and size of the letters in the Font and Font size menus in the toolbar. VoilĂ !

Once that the multiple-question slide is ready, we need to create two more slides: one that indicates that the answer that your audience has marked is correct and the other telling the opposite thing. Here we are going to show you how to design the “Right Answer” slide.

  • Go to the toolbar. Select Insert → New Slide or simply. You need to create the new slide just after the “question” one, so be sure that you are there when you add a new one.
  • It’s time for you to design the contents and layout. Choose the colors and fonts of the theme.
  • It’s important for your students that you encourage them. Add symbols as a check mark and a message of the type “Correct!”, “Well done!”, “Yes!”, “You’ve made it” and the like.
  • The “right answer” slide is ready!

You need to add a new slide for those cases in which your student gives a wrong answer. The process is quite similar to the one above.

  • Add and format a new slide. If you want to learn more about how to add, duplicate, move delete or hide slides, you can read this tutorial.
  • In this case, you could add a symbol that represents that the answer is not correct, such as “X”. Add a message that lets your audience know that the response is incorrect, encouraging them: “Try again”, “Oops!”. It needs to be simple and understandable.
  • Make sure that you add a button to redirect the student to the “question slide.” You can add a text such as “Try again” or something similar.
  • To create the button, add a shape (as in the previous section) and apply different colors and effects.

The main parts of this interactive quiz are ready. Now what we need to do is link the slides. Let’s see how to do it, although you can learn everything about how to add links, you can read How to Add Hyperlinks in Google Slides.

  • Go to the answer slide. and add a link to each button.
  • In our example, the first button/option is an incorrect answer. It should direct to the “wrong answer” slide.
  • Click twice on the button and select the text that appears.
  • You have two options: go to the toolbar and select Insert link or either right click on the text and select Link.
  • As we need to link this slide to another within the same presentation, select the option Slides in this presentation.
  • Remember that this corresponds to the incorrect option. Add the link to the “wrong answer.”
  • Click Apply.
  • If you don’t like it, remove the underlined effect in your text.
  • Great! You have added the first link. Option b is wrong as well, so we need to repeat the same steps.
  • Now let’s link option C to the “correct answer” slide! The steps are pretty much the same as in the two previous instances, but we’ll select the link of the “correct answer” slide.
  • Hence: double click and select the text of the button.
  • Go to the toolbar and select Insert link or either right click on the text and select Link.
  • Select the option Slides in this presentation.
  • Choose the “correct answer” slide.
  • Remove the underlined effect if needed.
  • Brilliant! You have linked the three options successfully. But we need to link the “wrong answer” slide to the “question slide”. Why? If your students provide an incorrect answer, the slides will redirect the child to the answer once again until he or she gets it right.
  • Go then to the “wrong answer” slide. Remember that you created a button reading “Try again”.
  • Select that button and select Insert link → Slides in this presentation.
  • Choose the “question” slide.
  • Your interactive quiz is ready!
  • If you liked the presentation that we have used for this tutorial, you can find #StayAtHome Games and other free education templates for Google Slides and PowerPoint on Slidesgo. Download it for free! It’s 100% editable and customizable.

All my students are able to easily access it, and Vevox makes it easy to make different quizzes for different classes and days! Highly recommend. Appreciative that Vevox training was offered in a timely manner and accommodated within our working hours in Alaska. Our trainer was knowledgeable, friendly and answered questions along the way. For concerns that could not be addressed they were followed through promptly. Responses were addressed to me by the next day. Adelina Rodriguez Director of Student Services - 🇺🇸 University of Alaska

Very easy to navigate and utilize with a wide variety of classroom applications including for the flipped classroom. I am able to engage students in a way that lets me know where they really are in their understanding. Great option for use with peer instruction pedagogy. This has been a life saver through the transition to remote learning. I teach courses of over 300 people and this provides a great way to get feedback from my class above and beyond the basic multiple choice. The word cloud function, in particular, is great as it allows for a class-built summary. The text is good for exit tickets from each class! I use vevox for my in-class polls as a professor. It has been really helpful. All the features like timeout, poll stats, live interaction is great to have. Harin Khakhi Teaching Associate - 🇺🇸 California State University Fullerton

#1 - Galaxy Quiz

Have you ever had a question that only the stars could possibly answer? Now you can ask it with our beautiful galaxy / universe quiz design. This quiz template is the perfect way to go for all the people who adore some extravagant designs - you'll definitely wow your audience! The only downside is that your quiz participants might be so mesmerized by the galactic infinity that they may actually forget to vote for the right answer.

#2 - Basic True and False Quiz (Black & White Style)

This template is pretty plain and basic, yet far from boring! The contrast between black and white and the diagonal text elements make it the perfect elegant choice for anyone who's looking for an interesting and timeless classic design. It even comes in three different options. You can either decide for one or use all three in one quiz-session. We got you covered with one simple white, one black, and one half black- half white design for anybody who can't decide which one they like better. You can use this template for all kinds of questions that have two possible answers (so it is perfect for Yes/No or True/False quizzes!)

a basic black and white Quiz design

#3 - Kahoot PowerPoint Template

Unfortunately, there is no way to conduct a Kahoot quiz via PowerPoint. Until now! We built this wonderful template that looks exactly like the design of our favorite online- quiz- game. But now you can easily play it in your presentation without having to open the browser. And don't worry, participating via smartphone is still absolutely possible and easier than ever by using the SlideLizard Quiz Creator Plugin . Similar to Kahoot it lets you conduct fun audience quizzes, but embedded directly within your PowerPoint presentation!

#4 - Summer Beach Style Quiz

Get some instant holiday vibes without leaving the country, or even the house! Inspired by our tropical island PowerPoint template (which you can get right here !), we designed a wonderful new quiz template that will give you and your audience the feeling of being on vacation while you're actually in a meeting, lecture, or elsewhere. So it is basically everything you could ever want in a quiz. There are even two background styles that you can choose between!

#5 - Keyboard Style Yes/No Quiz

Without a doubt, our keyboard style Yes/No Quiz is one of the most creative ones! It is really fun and an amazing option for anyone who's looking to switch things up a little. The best thing? It comes with an esc- option! So if your quiz participants really, really don't know the answer, they can just - well - escape instead! The slides with the Escape- options are optional however, so if you'd rather want your audience to vote either Yes or No, you can leave out the esc- key. It doesn't matter, weather you're only asking if the audience needs a bathroom break or hard- to- answer trivia questions, with this template you're always in style!

#6 - Personality Quiz

Until now you probably thought more about doing trivia questions in your presentations, but did you know that personality quiz questions can also be an amazing engagement- enhancing element during any presentation? They are especially great as ice breaker questions , but could also be used as mood- lightener at any point. And the best thing: If you get SlideLizard, you can even see the audience results, so you have a statistic overview of e.g. people's favorite ice cream flavors (or whatever else you've always wanted to ask!) P.S: You could also use all the other templates in this post as personality quizzes, but this one is specifically designed as such.

Personality quiz template

#7 - Picture Quiz

If pictures speak to you more than words do, our picture quiz template might be the one for you! It comes with a fun, modern and playful design, and the pictures can of course be changed to whatever you want them to be (you can also add or remove new images, so there is a selection of 2, 3 or 6 pictures). The picture quiz can be used for testing vocabulary (although #9 covers that already), or to spice up your trivia questions. You could even use it as a fun way to introduce yourself to the audience (e.g. "Which of these baby photos is me?") in order to break the ice. Tip: If you want to know more about ice breaker questions, check out our blog post here .

Picture quiz

#8 - Minimalist Quiz

Minimalism is extremely popular right now, and we totally get why! This is the simplest out of all the templates, but isn't it beautiful? With this quiz template, you get slides for Multiple Choice AND True/False questions! We are in love with this template in all its simplicity, but if you want, you could definitely use this as a blank canvas and upgrade it by adding pictures, backgrounds, new fonts or your favourite colors. The sky is the limit!

minimalist quiz

#9 - Vocabulary Quiz

This one is different from all the other quizzes, since it is neither multiple nor single choice, but instead somewhat of a memory game. We recommend this animated PowerPoint quiz template for testing new vocabulary or difficult terminology, but you could also adapt it and make it a regular open question format by writing questions instead of words on the cards and the right answers on the green cards below (it sounds more difficult than it actually is, and when you download the template, you'll get a detailed guide on how to use it.) In this format, there are some boxes with words in English (which you can exchange with your own words, obviously). By clicking on those boxes in presentation mode, they disappear and leave a green answer card. You can easily play this with your audience/students by letting them shout out the translation of a certain word and then clicking on the matching box to see if the translation is correct.

#10 - Exclusive Who Wants to be a Millionaire Quiz Template

Last but certainly not least, is our "Who wants to be a Millionaire" Template, which we created exclusively for you to feel like a real game show contestant! The whole template is pretty extensive, which is why we put it in a blog article on its own. Be sure to check it out right here in order to learn how to get the best experience possible out of the game - you'll also find the Download link there. The template comes with everything you could wish for - sound effects, a design that is stunningly similar to the real one, and even the possibility to participate via smartphone! The video below gives you a short demonstration of how the game looks.

Who wants to be a Millionaire

Let your audience participate with their smartphone

Once you have chosen a quiz, you have to ask yourself: How do I conduct it during my presentation? Of course, you could just let your audience raise their hands for the answers of their choice - but that seems outdated and overly complicated (counting the amount of votes for each answers,...). The way more convenient option is to use an application like SlideLizard, which allows your audience to vote for the answer of their choice via their mobile devices, making the experience a whole lot better - quiz competitions have never been better!

The process is easy:

  • Get SlideLizard for free by clicking here .
  • Connect your presentation with SlideLizard. If you need more details on how to do that, please watch this short video tutorial .
  • The Slides are already programmed to fill in your questions and Answers into the slots. We recommend to start by creating all the quiz questions you want to ask your audience.
  • Then, duplicate the question slide as often as you need (= same number of questions you created). It is also a good idea to insert an answer slide after every question.
  • You only need to assign the questions to the slides , and you're good to go!

Watch our video to get detailed instructions on how to connect your quiz with SlideLizard:

Adapt the templates

If you'd like to use one of our templates, but feel like making some adjustments, you can easily do that yourself. All of the given templates can be modified, you can make a two- answer quiz in a multiple choice one and vice versa, you can change colors, fonts and shapes to fit your personal taste or company branding. In the following quick guide, you will be shown how certain elements can be transformed. We're using our galaxy template as an example, but all the templates are transformable in the same or very similar ways.

So here's our downloaded template:

template by SlideLizard

Now, let's start by changing the background first. Click anywhere on a slide and select "Format Background"...

background format

Then go to "Picture or texture fill" (or Solid Fill if you want the background to be a plain color).

new background chosen

After clicking "Insert" your file explorer will open. Select the picture of your choice and click "Insert" once again. Your backround is now changed.

insert picture as background

The existing boxes should be rectangular, don't you think? Let's do that by deleting the existing boxes and exchanging them with new ones. To do so, click on a box, then right click > "Cut" (or hit the backspace key). Then go to the insert tab and click "Shapes", where you can choose the shape of your choice and draw it on the slide. Place it where you want.

new shapes inserted

If the object you just drew hides the text, just go to the "Shape Format" Tab and then click "Send backward" until the text shows again.

send elements backward

And while we're at it, maybe just remove two answer options and make it a True/False quiz? If you want to, you can also change the font, and we're good to go! You just modified our quiz and made a whole new one that has your own personal handwriting!

How to Make an Interactive Quiz in PowerPoint in Less Than 1 Minute (50 Use Cases)

Want to engage your audience, get them involved, and check their understanding without learning and juggling another tool? Well let’s make an interactive quiz in PowerPoint that’s as easy as adding a button, customizable, and to native PowerPoint.

While PowerPoint offers the most compared other tools, one thing it is said to lack is audience interactivity. Delivering new material and keeping students or whomever your audience is engaged, is often a balance that’s hard to strike, but with the help of ClassPoint, you can make interactive PowerPoint presentations and  add audience response questions right to your PowerPoint slides  in no time!

Interactive Quiz in PowerPoint

How to Turn Any PowerPoint Slide Into An Interactive Quiz

So how can you turn your PowerPoint slide into an interactive quiz question? With 3 simple steps , using the Microsoft PowerPoint add-in ClassPoint .

ClassPoint is free and the Basic plan includes 5 different kinds of interactive quiz types — Multiple Choice , Short Answer , Word Cloud , Slide Drawing and Image Upload , while the Pro plan includes more quiz types including Fill in the Blanks , Audio Record and Video Upload . We will show you all of them in this article, including use cases for each quiz type!

Turn Your PowerPoint Slide Into An Interactive Multiple Choice Question

To follow along, first download ClassPoint , and continue reading! 🔽 Let’s get started!

1: Add Button to Turn your Slide into an Interactive Quiz Question

To turn any PowerPoint slide into interactive Multiple Choice questions first add the question as text on your slide .

Then, click on the Inknoe ClassPoint tab on your PowerPoint ribbon up top. To make your Multiple Choice question interactive, click on the Multiple Choice icon, and a button will appear on your slide.

The question settings will open on the right where you can set the number of options along with the  correct answer(s) . You can also set the Play Options of your choice, and that’s it! You have now successfully turned your slide into an interactive quiz question.

2: Run the Interactive Quiz in PowerPoint Slideshow

Now that you have created your interactive Multiple Choice quiz in PowerPoint, let’s run it with your students!

When you begin your presentation in Slideshow mode, you will notice a  class code  appears on the top right-hand corner. This is the code your audience will use to join your class. You can use a random class code generated for each session, or you can create your own saved class with its unique class code .

Students can join your class on any device at www.classpoint.app by typing in the class code and their name, or scan the QR code provided on screen. Once they have joined your class, they will see your slides on their devices, and are ready to answer any interactive quiz questions!

When you are ready to run your question, click on the question button to begin receiving responses from your students. Students will be prompted to submit their responses. You will be able to see the real-time responses on your screen. Tips: If you want to keep the responses hidden until everyone has submitted, hide them with the eye icon, or minimize the window. (Auto-minimizing is a Play option too!)

When all of your students have answered your question, you can “ Close Submissions “, and view the colorful bar graph displaying your audience responses! Click the toggle to reveal the correct answer , and click on any of the answer choices to show which students submitted it. You can also award stars to your students who answered the questions correctly!

Tip: Create a saved class so your students can join with the same name and class code every time. This not only smooths out the joining process, but it also enables stars awarded to students to accumulate over time, which you can reveal on the leaderboard , or keep track of for yourself inside your Class List in edit mode.

3: Review Activity Submissions After Class

online presentation quiz

Once you close the submissions in the activity window, the results are automatically saved inside the question button!

You will notice your question button has now turned green , indicating that there are responses stored inside. You can click on the button to review the results again by clicking on “ View Responses ” on the side panel.

If you’d like to clear the responses, click “ Delete Responses “, and the question button will turn back to blue, and you can now run the Multiple Choice question again.

To add more variety to the way your receive text-based responses for your interactive quizzes, you can select Short Answer , Fill-in the Blanks and Word Cloud question types from the Inknoe ClassPoint tab on your PowerPoint ribbon, and repeat Step #2 and #3 on the list above to start running these quiz types on your PowerPoint slideshow.

When to Use Text-Based Interactive Quizzes

  • Knowledge Assessment
  • Formative Assessment:
  • Quick Review
  • Objective Grading
  • Concept Application
  • Explanation and Justification
  • Problem-Solving
  • Creative Expression
  • Brainstorming

Genially in a nutshell

How do I make a presentation interactive and how does Genially work? Find the answers to all of your slide-related questions here!

What’s an interactive presentation?

Interactive slides contain clickable hotspots, links, buttons, and animations that are activated at the touch of a button. Instead of reading or watching passively, your audience can actively interact with the content.

Genially’s interaction presentation software allows you to combine text, photos, video clips, audio and other content in one deck. It’s a great way to condense more information into fewer slides.

If you’re a teacher, you can share multiple materials in one single learning resource. Students can create their own projects using digital media and online maps. For business or training, try embedding spreadsheet data, PDFs, and online content directly in your slides.

An interactive slide deck is more user-friendly than a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation or Google Slides document. That’s because you can break information down into chunks with pop-ups, labels, voiceovers and annotated infographics.

The other benefit of interactive content is increased engagement. It’s easier to keep your audience’s attention when they’re actively participating. Try Genially’s presentation software and free slideshow maker to see how it’s better than other presentation websites. You won’t go back to standard presentation apps!

How do you make a clickable slide?

The best way to make slides clickable is to use Genially’s free interactive presentation program. Design your slide then apply an interaction. In a couple of clicks, you can add popup windows, hyperlinks, close-up images, games, animations, multimedia and other content.

Choose from the library of hotspot buttons and icons to show people what to click on. Go to Presenter View to get a preview and see how your content will appear to your audience.

How do I create presentations that look professional?

You’ve got a deadline looming and you’re staring at the screen with a blank presentation. We’ve all been there! Starting a presentation design from scratch is tricky, especially if you’re short on time.

Genially’s free online presentation maker has over 2000 ready-to-use templates for professional slide presentations, photos slideshows, and more. Each slide design has been created by our team of top graphic designers. No need to worry about fonts, centering images, or designing a matching color scheme. It’s all done for you.

You can also embed your presentation on your website, company wiki, or social media. Genially is compatible with WordPress, Moodle, Google Classroom, and other platforms. If you use an LMS, you can also download your interactive design slides in SCORM format.

  • Adverse childhood experiences can have long-term impacts on health, opportunity and well-being.
  • Adverse childhood experiences are common and some groups experience them more than others.

What are adverse childhood experiences?

Adverse childhood experiences, or ACEs, are potentially traumatic events that occur in childhood (0-17 years). Examples include: 1

  • Experiencing violence, abuse, or neglect.
  • Witnessing violence in the home or community.
  • Having a family member attempt or die by suicide.

Also included are aspects of the child’s environment that can undermine their sense of safety, stability, and bonding. Examples can include growing up in a household with: 1

  • Substance use problems.
  • Mental health problems.
  • Instability due to parental separation.
  • Instability due to household members being in jail or prison.

The examples above are not a complete list of adverse experiences. Many other traumatic experiences could impact health and well-being. This can include not having enough food to eat, experiencing homelessness or unstable housing, or experiencing discrimination. 2 3 4 5 6

Quick facts and stats

ACEs are common. About 64% of adults in the United States reported they had experienced at least one type of ACE before age 18. Nearly one in six (17.3%) adults reported they had experienced four or more types of ACEs. 7

Preventing ACEs could potentially reduce many health conditions. Estimates show up to 1.9 million heart disease cases and 21 million depression cases potentially could have been avoided by preventing ACEs. 1

Some people are at greater risk of experiencing one or more ACEs than others. While all children are at risk of ACEs, numerous studies show inequities in such experiences. These inequalities are linked to the historical, social, and economic environments in which some families live. 5 6 ACEs were highest among females, non-Hispanic American Indian or Alaska Native adults, and adults who are unemployed or unable to work. 7

ACEs are costly. ACEs-related health consequences cost an estimated economic burden of $748 billion annually in Bermuda, Canada, and the United States. 8

ACEs can have lasting effects on health and well-being in childhood and life opportunities well into adulthood. 9 Life opportunities include things like education and job potential. These experiences can increase the risks of injury, sexually transmitted infections, and involvement in sex trafficking. They can also increase risks for maternal and child health problems including teen pregnancy, pregnancy complications, and fetal death. Also included are a range of chronic diseases and leading causes of death, such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and suicide. 1 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17

ACEs and associated social determinants of health, such as living in under-resourced or racially segregated neighborhoods, can cause toxic stress. Toxic stress, or extended or prolonged stress, from ACEs can negatively affect children’s brain development, immune systems, and stress-response systems. These changes can affect children’s attention, decision-making, and learning. 18

Children growing up with toxic stress may have difficulty forming healthy and stable relationships. They may also have unstable work histories as adults and struggle with finances, jobs, and depression throughout life. 18 These effects can also be passed on to their own children. 19 20 21 Some children may face further exposure to toxic stress from historical and ongoing traumas. These historical and ongoing traumas refer to experiences of racial discrimination or the impacts of poverty resulting from limited educational and economic opportunities. 1 6

Adverse childhood experiences can be prevented. Certain factors may increase or decrease the risk of experiencing adverse childhood experiences.

Preventing adverse childhood experiences requires understanding and addressing the factors that put people at risk for or protect them from violence.

Creating safe, stable, nurturing relationships and environments for all children can prevent ACEs and help all children reach their full potential. We all have a role to play.
