Cassandra Clare

New York Times Bestselling Author of The Mortal Instruments

The Last Hours

The Last Hours is a brand-new Shadowhunters series set in 1903. You don’t need to have read any other Shadowhunter books to get started with it, though if you have you may see some familiar faces!

Cordelia Carstairs is a Shadowhunter, a warrior trained since childhood to battle demons. When her father is accused of a terrible crime, she and her brother travel to London in hopes of preventing the family’s ruin. Cordelia’s mother wants to marry her off, but Cordelia is determined to be a hero rather than a bride. Soon Cordelia encounters childhood friends James and Lucie Herondale and is drawn into their world of glittering ballrooms, secret assignations, and supernatural salons, where vampires and warlocks mingle with mermaids and magicians. . .

Follow the adventures of Cordelia and her friends — James Herondale, Matthew Fairchild, Lucie Herondale, Thomas Lightwood, Anna Lightwood, and many more — through the glamour and danger of a supernatural Edwardian London. There will be three books: Chain of Gold, Chain of Iron, and Chain of Thorns — the titles are taken from the a reference to Great Expectations, which inspired this series.

(" Imagine one selected day struck out of it, and think how different its course would have been. Pause you who read this, and think for a moment of the long chain of iron or gold, of thorns or flowers, that would never have bound you, but for the formation of the first link on one memorable day. " — Great Expectations

James and Cordelia must save London ― and their marriage ― in this thrilling and highly anticipated conclusion to the Last Hours series from the #1 New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author Cassandra Clare. Chain of Thorns is a Shadowhunters novel. Cordelia Carstairs has lost everything that matters to her. In only a few short weeks, she has seen her father murdered, her plans to become parabatai with her best friend, Lucie, destroyed, and her marriage to James Herondale crumble before her eyes. Even worse, she is now bound to an ancient demon, Lilith, stripping her of her power as a Shadowhunter. After fleeing to Paris with Matthew Fairchild, Cordelia hopes to forget her sorrows in the city’s glittering nightlife. But reality intrudes when shocking news comes from home: Tatiana Blackthorn has escaped the Adamant Citadel, and London is under new threat by the Prince of Hell, Belial. Cordelia returns to a London riven by chaos and dissent. The long-kept secret that Belial is James and Lucie’s grandfather has been revealed by an unexpected enemy, and the Herondales find themselves under suspicion of dealings with demons. Cordelia longs to protect James, but is torn between a love for James she has long believed hopeless, and the possibility of a new life with Matthew. Nor can her friends help ― ripped apart by their own secrets, they seem destined to face what is coming alone. For time is short, and Belial’s plan is about to crash into the Shadowhunters of London like a deadly wave, one that will separate Cordelia, Lucie, and the Merry Thieves from help of any kind. Left alone in a shadowy London, they must face Belial’s deadly army. If Cordelia and her friends are going to save their city ― and their families ― they will have to muster their courage, swallow their pride, and trust one another again. For if they fail, they may lose everything ― even their souls.

 • The series and book titles were taken from the Charles Dickens' classic novel Great Expectations , of which the series is a loose form of retelling (with there being parallels among characters: James like Pip and Grace as Estella (with many readers assuming that Cordelia is like Biddy in the situation), Matthew like Herbert, and Tatiana as Miss Havisham). [1] [2] [3] [4]
 • According to Cassandra Clare : "The books will interconnect with The Dark Artifices trilogy as two separate trilogies that are also the stories of the Blackthorns, Herondales and Carstairs, much like The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices interconnected despite taking place in different time periods and locations." [5] The story is also meant to connect in some way with The Wicked Powers series specifically. [6]
 • The series was originally set to be released alternately with The Dark Artifices , [7] before Chain of Gold was delayed until after The Dark Artifices finale. [8] [9]
 • Cassandra Clare released ten short stories ( vignettes ) revolving around the characters from The Last Hours , including Matthew Fairchild , Thomas Lightwood , James Herondale , Lucie Herondale , Cordelia Carstairs , Anna Lightwood , and more. They were released online to be read for free each month leading up to the release of Chain of Gold .
 • Between the initial conception of the series and its publication, a large number of details were changed or removed; such as: Cordelia and Alastair are no longer white, Charlotte and Henry don't have young daughters, [10] a baby was supposed to need adopting, [11] the ending was originally much more tragic, [12] and even the character's personalities were different. [13] Also, Woolsey Scott , [14] Camille Belcourt , [15] Catarina Loss , [16] and Church [17] were all going to appear and we were meant to learn how Belial impregnated Elizabeth Gray despite not being able to walk the Earth. Chain of Thorns (The Last Hours #3) by Cassandra Clare

James and Cordelia must save London—and their marriage—in this thrilling and highly anticipated conclusion to the Last Hours series from the #1 New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author Cassandra Clare.

Cordelia longs to protect James but is torn between a love for James she has long believed hopeless, and the possibility of a new life with Matthew. Nor can her friends help—ripped apart by their own secrets, they seem destined to face what is coming alone.

For time is short, and Belial’s plan is about to crash into the Shadowhunters of London like a deadly wave, one that will separate Cordelia, Lucie, and the Merry Thieves from help of any kind. Left alone in a shadowy London, they must face Belial’s deadly army. If Cordelia and her friends are going to save their city—and their families—they will have to muster their courage, swallow their pride, and trust one another again. For if they fail, they may lose everything—even their souls.

 • Cassandra Clare

Cassandra Clare was born to American parents in Teheran, Iran and spent much of her childhood travelling the world with her family, including one trek through the Himalayas as a toddler where she spent a month living in her father’s backpack. She lived in France, England and Switzerland before she was ten years old.

Since her family moved around so much she found familiarity in books and went everywhere with a book under her arm. She spent her high school years in Los Angeles where she used to write stories to amuse her classmates, including an epic novel called “The Beautiful Cassandra” based on a Jane Austen short story of the same name (and which later inspired her current pen name).

After college, Cassie lived in Los Angeles and New York where she worked at various entertainment magazines and even some rather suspect tabloids where she reported on Brad and Angelina’s world travels and Britney Spears’ wardrobe malfunctions. She started working on her YA novel, City of Bones, in 2004, inspired by the urban landscape of Manhattan, her favourite city. She turned to writing fantasy fiction full time in 2006 and hopes never to have to write about Paris Hilton again.

Cassie’s first professional writing sale was a short story called “The Girl’s Guide to Defeating the Dark Lord” in a Baen anthology of humor fantasy. Cassie hates working at home alone because she always gets distracted by reality TV shows and the antics of her two cats, so she usually sets out to write in local coffee shops and restaurants. She likes to work in the company of her friends, who see that she sticks to her deadlines.

City of Bones was her first novel.

The Last Hours Books in Order by Cassandra Clare

The Last Hours books are the most recently published by Cassandra Clare which take place within the larger Shadowhunter world. It is another prequel of sorts that dives into the ancestors of characters Clare has already written.

The Last Hours Books in Order

The Last Hours Books in Order of Publication

The first book, Chains of Gold, begins in 1903 and follows the ancestors of characters in The Dark Artifices trilogy. It is not necessary to read that trilogy first to understand the story in Last Hours , but it is recommended.

That is because there will be subtle references that will make more sense and take on deeper meaning if you have read the books that Clare published before this series. It will offer a better reading experience if you understand more of this world.

Parents need to know that Chain of Thorns is the third and final book in The Last Hours series set in the vast Shadowhunter world of author Cassandra Clare that is geared specifically for mature teens and up. The Last Hours takes place chronologically after The Infernal Devices (early 20th century) and…

Educational Value

Mentions of places in Edwardian London and in Paris at that time. Some history of the Great Fire of London in 1666 and descriptions of Westminster Abbey, its architectural details and its long-dead inhabitants. Plus references to the Persian epic poem Layla and Majnun and some Persian words sprinkled throughout, especially endearments. Most chapters begin with a literary quote or poem with excerpts from Great Expectations , The Canterbury Tales , Dante's Inferno , and other works.

Positive Messages

Many strong messages, but the most powerful is the importance of communication in the face of two emotionally charged topics: addiction and coming out. Alastair says of Matthew's addiction to alcohol that it is "a disease of shame as well as addiction and need. Shame poisons you. It makes you unable to accept help, for you do not believe that you deserve it." Ari says of coming out to her parents, "I am sure my mother is mourning the daughter that she never had. But if she loves me -- and I believe she does -- I think she most love the reality of me." Two other characters speak candidly of coming out and staying true to themselves. Choosing mercy and forgiveness over revenge and hatred is also a strong idea. Christopher says that "hatred poisons the person who hates, not the person who is hated." Also, keeping painful secrets can impede healing.

Positive Role Models

All this positive communication would not be possible without strong, empathetic friendships demonstrated throughout. The friends in this story show teamwork , courage , and perseverance in the face of adversity. James uses skills of self-control he learned from his uncle to find calm, focused resilience when evil powers threaten to envelop him. He keeps secrets for far too long because he doesn't want anyone's pity, but also chooses forgiveness over hatred and revenge. While Cordelia stumbles blindly into some dangerous situations, she does it in the name of saving her friends and family. Cordelia's brother Alastair shows support for little sister Cordelia and opens himself to friendship and love, something he never thought he deserved before. Matthew works hard to conquer his addiction, starting with learning to let his friends help him instead of keeping his struggles to himself. Ariadne finds independence – and a name change to Ari – by accepting herself as a lesbian woman and not letting parental expectations dictate her future. Grace owns up to her many mistakes and learns to forgive herself and move forward.

Diverse Representations

As usual in the Shadowhunter world, the LGBTQ community is well represented. One couple is gay, another is lesbian, and a man is bisexual. There's also some racial diversity here: Cordelia and Alastair's mother is Persian and they speak Persian at home. Cordelia is described as having light-brown skin. Ariadne is Indian with English adoptive parents. Though societal norms of the early 20th century apply in things like relationships, women in the Shadowhunter world are allowed to be formidable in battle.

Did we miss something on diversity? Suggest an update.

Violence & Scariness

Shadowhunters fight demons, as is their lot in life, with blades flashing and ichor flowing before the demons disappear in a puff of ash. Here an army of dead humans is used as hosts for demons, who must be hacked out of the humans and then killed separately. One close friend of the main characters dies in battle and is heavily mourned and other minor characters die, one with a slit throat. Hostages, including one child, are possessed and burn alive from the inside. A child is kidnapped, in danger of being killed, and cut with a knife. The restless dead are channeled and spoken with and there's a visit to a demon realm with the threat of death and possession. A character suffers from life-threatening alcohol withdrawal. Talk of a mother emotionally abusing her children.

Sex, Romance & Nudity

A straight couple married in their late teens has sex for the first time with details about undressing and pain with intercourse and climax. They later have sex in the bathtub. There's less description of a gay couple and a lesbian couple having sex -- mostly undressing, touching, and kissing with scenes cut off there. Innuendo later indicates more happened between them. Two more straight couples kiss passionately.

"Bloody/bloody hell" and "bastard" are the most common, along with "damn," "ass," and "bitch."

An older teen character is an alcoholic and tries to hide his heavy drinking (including absinthe in Paris) from friends until he's confronted and begins the process of withdrawal and recovery, which is shown as difficult and painful. Other older teens drink in bars, at parties, and in homes, and a bottle of champagne is shared in a prison cell. An adult smokes a tobacco pipe and there's a reference to snuff.

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Chain of Thorns is the third and final book in The Last Hours series set in the vast Shadowhunter world of author Cassandra Clare that is geared specifically for mature teens and up. The Last Hours takes place chronologically after The Infernal Devices (early 20th century) and involves James and Lucie, the children of Tess and Will from that series. Like all Shadowhunter novels, there are demons to fight. Ichor spills freely in battles and the demons disappear in a cloud of ash after some gore, this time with dead bodies used as vessels for demons. One close friend of the main characters dies in battle and is heavily mourned and other minor characters die, one with a slit throat. Hostages, including one child, are possessed and burn alive from the inside. A character suffers from life-threatening alcohol withdrawal after hiding his drinking, and there's a bit more drinking from other older teen characters besides. Sexual content is ramped up in this finale, as expected. Readers have been waiting the whole series for the main straight married couple in the story to finally be together physically, so two scenes have some vivid details. There are also scenes of gay and lesbian couples kissing and undressing, but the details are left more to the imagination. This is an 800-pager with lots going on, but one thing holds the heart of the story together splendidly: the communication skills of the circle of friends featured, especially for these two emotionally charged topics: addiction and coming out. But if she loves me – and I believe she does – I think she most love the reality of me." Two other characters speak candidly of coming out and staying true to themselves. Others speak sagely of forgiveness and not holding onto anger or painful secrets. So there's much more to ponder for mature teen readers than romance and demon fighting.

What's the Story?

In CHAIN OF THORNS: THE LAST HOURS, BOOK 3, James is having dreams of dark places with voices declaring, "They wake." Cordelia, on a trip to Paris with Matthew to forget her heartbreak over James, hears the same ominous message at a cabaret from a warlock channeling her dead father. And when Cordelia and Matthew are confronted by Lilith, the mother of demons, on a Paris street, Lilith repeats the mantra while demanding Cordelia's allegiance -- they had a deal that Cordelia would be her paladin, a deal she sorely regrets. But what wakes? Surely it has to do with James and Lucie's power-hungry demon grandfather Belial. Cordelia and her London friends are determined to find out, even as things get complicated among them. James goes after Cordelia in Paris to win her back and finds her kissing Matthew. Matthew is discovered lying about his drinking after his promise to Cordelia to stay sober in Paris. Lucie, finally united with a live and breathing Jesse she helped raise, faints every time they kiss and is mentally transported to a pit of the restless dead who are desperately trying to tell her something.

Is It Any Good?

This Shadowhunter series finale sticks to the best-selling formula: melodrama and sultry romance topped off with a world-saving demon battle royale. And because it's Edwardian London, toss in some gorgeous dresses and carriage rides and trips to historic places like Westminster Abbey and Cross Bones Graveyard. Unfortunately for fans of ye olde London, it's in pretty rough shape for much of the book because of one power-hungry demon -- Belial, aka James and Lucie's grandpa. It's only James, Lucie, Cordelia, and friends who decide not to abandon London when gramps comes calling; only they know about Belial's army, his nefarious plans, only they can figure out how to defeat him. And only they can travel to his depressing demon realm and come back alive. It's a blessed break from the usual infuriating Clave politics of the series -- the Clave that seems to exist only to impede and punish young Shadowhunters. Instead, when the worst goes down, James and friends get free reign to be fancy weapon-wielding, demon-fighting heroes together.

The young Shadowhunters are present for each other in other ways, too. Some truly thoughtful and touching scenes grapple with Matthew's alcoholism and how best to help him, and when Ari explains why she refuses to be anyone but herself, a woman who loves other women, all her friends rally around her. As usual, the main love story is full of complications, some of them that feel fabricated to keep the miserable couple apart just a little longer. But it does make their reunion all the sweeter. At 800 pages, Chain of Thorns is a long haul, but readers have plenty of demons, passionate kisses, and tender friendship moments to hold them to the end.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about how friends look out for each other in The Chain of Thorns. How do they help Matthew with his addiction? How do they support their friends who come out as gay or lesbian? What holds some friends back from asking for help they need? How are those hurdles overcome?

Readers have been waiting the whole series for a couple to finally be together. So when they have sex after more than 1,500 pages or so of waiting, is there an expectation for intimate details? Should teen books be less overt about sexual content? Or does it depend on the situation?

Do you think another Shadowhunter spin-off series is in the works? Whom would you like it to feature?

Discovery Showrunner Explains How the Finale's Surprising Twists Fit Trek Canon

Back to the future.

Burnham finds herself among the technology that the Progenitors found in the series finale of 'Star ...

The age of Discovery has come to an end. With “Life, Itself,” the first Star Trek show of the streaming era has concluded its Season 5 storyline and wrapped up two major mysteries, one of which has been floating around since 2018. Discovery’s emotional ending likely wasn’t what fans expected, and the final coda features a leap that reveals not just the end of the starship’s voyages, but that teases a legacy for Burnham and Book that could have big implications for the Trek timeline.

To sort it all out, Inverse caught up with Discovery showrunner Michelle Paradise to figure out what went into devising the series’ final moments, and how it all ties into a specific Trek mystery while also connecting to a different prequel show from almost two decades ago. Spoilers ahead.

Discovery’s original ending

Burnham, T'Rina, and Saru, in the first ending of 'Star Trek: Discovery.'

Discovery Season 5 originally ended with T’Rina and Saru’s wedding before it had to jump 30 years forward.

Discovery’s final episode seems to have two endings. After the entire Breen conflict is resolved and Burnham confers with Kovich (David Cronenberg), the episode seems to come to a serene end with Saru (Doug Jones) and T’Rina’s (Tara Rosling) beachy wedding. As guests mingle, Book (David Ajala ) shows up late and reconciles with Michael.

“That was it. It was the scene on the beach where Burnham and Book walk off and the camera sort of pans up,” Michelle Paradise tells Inverse. “That was the original ending.”

Had Season 6 been in the works, Discovery Season 5 would have ended in the present tense of the show (3191) with Saru and T’rina’s wedding. Although Discovery Season 5 wrapped production in November 2022, it wasn’t until April 2023 that a coda was developed to conclude the entire series. “We were editing episodes 8 and 9, I think, when we found out that this would be our last season,” Paradise says. “Everything starting from the pan up, that’s the new stuff.”

The flash-forward timeline

The final coda of 'Star Trek: Discovery,' Book, Burnham and their son, Leto.

Leto, Burnham, and Book, 30 years in the future.

Discovery’s real ending jumps forward several decades. Burnham and Book have distinguished streaks of gray hair, Burnham is referred to as Admiral, and they have a grown son named Leto, named after Book’s deceased brother.

“It’s 30 years later,” Michelle Paradise confirms, which means the Discovery coda takes place around 3221. This also means Discovery’s final moments are set in yet another new century. The crew initially jumped from the 23rd century to the 32nd, and now Burnham takes the USS Discovery on one last mission early in the 33rd century. In doing so, Discovery creates more future-tense Trek canon that other new Trek shows may have to deal with.

“We were nervous, but not because of [creating new canon],” Paradise says. “It was really about how we wrap up a series when we have essentially 10 to 12 pages and three days to shoot it. It was about making sure we did justice to the characters and bring emotional closure for the audience.”

The Enterprise connection

David Cronenberg as Kovich, who is really "Daniels."

David Cronenberg as Kovich, who’s revealed to be someone else entirely.

Just before the new material, Michael Burnham unravels a secret that Discovery has been keeping since Season 3. Just who is David Cronenberg’s cryptic character, Kovich ? Burnham learns that Kovich is a codename and that his real identity is Agent Daniels. Daniels mentions he served on the USS Enterprise ; for those who don’t remember, Daniels was a temporal agent from the 31st century who, in the prequel series Enterprise , often traveled back to the 22nd century to assist the crew. At the time, Daniels was trying to stop other factions from rewriting history. In the 32nd-century context of Discovery, we’ve been told that temporal accords made time travel illegal.

Paradise explains that the writers’ room had planned to reveal that Kovich was Daniels for a while. “I think it was back in Season 4 we kind of decided that was where we were going with him,” she says. “If you rewatch season five, you'll see there are tiny little Easter eggs. He's writing with a pen and paper, which is very weird for the future when they’ve all got holograms. He’s a bit out of time.”

Discovery’s final destination explained

Admiral Burnham commands the USS Discovery, one last time in the series finale of 'Star Trek: Discov...

Admiral Burnham takes the USS Discovery — and its benevolent AI, Zora — on one last ride.

Discovery’s last bit of housekeeping was reconciling a strange bit of canon introduced in the 2018 Short Treks episode “Calypso.” That short depicted the USS Discovery adrift and empty, with only a friendly, sentient AI named Zora (Annabelle Wallis) aboard. In this distant future, a human named Craft (Aldis Hodge) boards the ship and has a romance with Zora, who projects herself as a hologram.

Ever since “Calypso” aired, fans have wondered whether it took place in an alternate future, or if it would ever fit with the 32nd-century timeframe Discovery eventually arrived in. While we saw Zora’s sentience emerge after “Calypso,” the episode’s questions remained unanswered .

“I dodged those questions for years!” Paradise says. “But it felt like we needed to tie it back to ‘Calypso’ for people who had seen the short. But we also wanted to do it in such a way that if people hadn’t seen the short, they wouldn’t be like, ‘What are they talking about?’”

In the end, Discovery is sent on a top-secret “Red Directive” mission, which requires Zora to have her fateful meeting with Craft at some point in the future. Even Burnham doesn’t know why, but if Discovery doesn’t meet Craft, then something about the timeline won’t be quite right. Paradise says these scenes were created to emphasize character, rather than connecting dots for the sake of it. We see Discovery end up where it's supposed to end up, but the why had to remain a secret to preserve the moment’s emotional integrity.

“We felt it was important to answer the question — what happened to one of the main characters, the ship itself,” Paradise says. “Ultimately, any version of that where we went into plot started to take away from the emotional experience. And ultimately why they had to go out there didn't feel as important as the fact that Burnham’s going to be the one to take the ship out. One last time.”

On a spontaneous decision, I decided to delve into R. F. Kuang's Yellowface, and I must say, it did not disappoint. The story revolves around two aspiring writers: Athena Liu, a critically acclaimed writer who has just signed a deal with Netflix; and June Hayward, whose debut novel sank and never made it to a paperback. Tragedy strikes and Athena dies in a freak accident, right in front of June’s eyes. Our dear June then goes on to steal Athena’s novel and passes it off as her own creation, with minor edits, in search of the recognition she craved. And she gets it until damaging evidence surfaces, threatening June’s brand-new success.

Kuang cleverly satirizes publishing's double standards, tackling diversity, racism, and cultural appropriation. The story highlights the struggles faced by writers in their quest to produce exceptional works. It also explores the impact of social media on the literary landscape, where authors are often subjected to criticism and called out, sometimes escalating to extreme levels. I've lost count of the number of people who have recommended Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow to me over the past few months. A novel centered around two childhood friends who become creative partners (and find fame and fortune) in video game design, I wasn't sure if it was going to be the book for me—I've never really been a gamer. But by the end of my five-hour flight to St. Kitts last week I was utterly immersed, not just in the emotional intensity that comes with the close friendship the book is centered around, but in the virtual worlds these characters were creating together. I'll be thinking about the Ichigo universe, and the beautiful and flawed characters of Sam Masur and Sadie Green, for some time to come. —Lale Arikoglu, articles director $26, Bookshop. Get it now!

Gabrielle Zevin won the Goodreads Choice Award for the best fiction novel in 2022 for Tomorrow, Tomorrow, and Tomorrow. It’s a coming-of-age novel about friends who start a video game company. Former President Donald Trump’s campaign boasted Friday that it had received $52.8 million in donations in the 24 hours since a Manhattan jury found him guilty in his hush money trial.

The staggering sum was contributed to the 77-year-old presumptive Republican nominee’s campaign through its online digital fundraising platform — and amounts to more than $2 million in donations per hour since the verdict was read.

“Biden and his Democrat allies have turned our legal system into a political tool, and Americans from every corner of the country have had enough,” Trump campaign advisers Susie Wiles and Chris LaCivita said in a statement.

Donald Trump

“This momentum is just getting started and together, as President Trump stated perfectly, Americans will render the real verdict November 5th,” they added.

The campaign noted that more than one-third of donors were new Trump donors.

Trump’s team previously announced that the guilty verdict had generated a “record-shattering” $34.8 million in small-dollar donations between 6 p.m. and 11:59 p.m. Thursday.

Trump supporters

The former president was convicted on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records related to payments to his then-lawyer and “fixer” Michael Cohen for “legal services” that jurors determined were actually going to keep porn star Stormy Daniels from speaking out about an alleged sexual encounter with Trump in 2006.

Trump is scheduled to be sentenced July 11, one week before he is scheduled to accept the Republican nomination for president.

A warehouse owned by the nonprofit organization Angel of Edgewood in Hartford was broken into for the second time in less than a week.

The first incident occurred last Wednesday and the second on Sunday night.

The organization runs food pantries, a community cafe, and a mobile soup kitchen serving the Hartford community. It says toys, books and other items were stolen from its warehouse and estimates at least $50,000 in lost items.

“They not only hurt me,” says founder Jendayi Scott-Miller. “They really hurt the community, really bad. I just hope that the items that they stole, you know, people wouldn’t purchase.”

The burglar allegedly used a crowbar to enter through the front door, which she says is different from the last incident, where the thieves entered through the garbage chute. That chute is now welded close.

“I couldn’t get in the door,” she says. “I’m like pulling and pull and I thought that the inside latch was closed. And I was like no, something isn’t right.”

Scott-Miller alongside her husband have been taking shifts sleeping outside the warehouse. She says Sunday night she returned home at midnight.

“Last night was the first night I went home,” she says. “The one night that we went home is when they broke in, so they’re watching.”

She says hiring security for the building is too expensive.

“It cost money, something we don’t have,” says Scott-Miller. “We really have to ramp it up and camp out. Get some volunteers, hopefully to help us, sit out here and take shifts. But you know, we shouldn’t have to do this.”

The building currently doesn’t have an alarm system or security cameras, which Scott-Miller says is due to the lack of Wi-Fi.

“Since last week we’ve been trying to get Wi-Fi,” says Scott-Miller. “Our neighbors, it’s been a struggled with them signing the waivers with Comcast to allow us on their side of the property.”

NBC Connecticut reached out to the neighbors, Children & Family Dentistry & Braces, and it said it did not want to comment on the situation and the owners were not available for an interview.

“It’s just really frustrating that the dental office isn’t cooperating with signing the waiver,’ says Scott-Miller.

In a statement, Hartford Police said it can’t comment on an open investigation, but it has “processed evidence and that they Major Crimes Burglary Division is actively investigating the incident.”

Donald Trump found guilty of all 34 charges in hush money trial

By CNN's Kara Scannell, Lauren Del Valle and Jeremy Herb in the courthouse

Our live coverage has ended. Follow the latest news on Donald Trump's guilty verdict or read through the updates below.

Stormy Daniels' attorney says she was "really emotional" after verdict

From CNN's Kaanita Iyer

Stormy Daniels' attorney Clark Brewster said his client was "really emotional" following former President Donald Trump's guilty verdict in the hush money case.

He told CNN's Kaitlan Collins that Daniels faced the "realization of the finality" and had "a lot of emotions flowing."

Brewster also responded to Trump attorney Todd Blanche saying he'd raise Daniels' testimony in appeal, arguing that "it was straightforward" and "they had an opportunity to cross examine her."

Stormy Daniels' friend said "it's a joyous day" after Trump's guilty verdict

From CNN's Piper Hudspeth Blackburn

Alana Evans, right, speaks with CNN's Abby Phillip on May 30.

Alana Evans, friend of Stormy Daniels and an adult film star told CNN’s Abby Phillip that she — and Daniels — absolutely feels vindicated by Trump’s guilty verdict, calling it a “joyous day.”

"We were deemed credible, and it's heartwarming in that way because so many people judge us for who we are — our backgrounds — it's something that's thrown in our faces again and again ... it isn't a reflection of who we are as people," Evans said. Evans added that she's "really happy simply because it meant that at the end of the day, it really is a adult film star who is stepping forward and being the person to put that man to the truth."

Here's what happens now that Trump has been convicted in his hush money criminal case

From CNN's Devan Cole

Former President Donald Trump leaves the Manhattan Criminal Court in New York after a jury found him guilty of all 34 felony counts in his hush money trial on Thursday, May 30.

A New York jury convicting Donald Trump on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records brought the former president’s weekslong trial to a close but ushered in a new phase of the historic case.

Now in the unique position of being the first former US president convicted of a felony, Trump faces the possibility of a prison sentence or probation for his crimes stemming from a hush money payment scheme he helped facilitate ahead of the 2016 presidential election.

Trump – who is known for mounting lengthy appeals of court rulings against him – has said he will appeal the conviction, which can be done after he is sentenced.

Here’s what to know about the case following Trump’s conviction:

When will Trump be sentenced?

Judge Juan Merchan has set Trump’s sentencing for 10 a.m. ET on July 11. For now, the former president will remain out of prison as he awaits his sentencing. Prosecutors did not ask for Trump to post any bond.

Can Trump appeal his conviction?

Shortly after Trump was convicted, his attorney Todd Blanche asked Merchan for an acquittal of the charges notwithstanding the guilty verdict. The judge rejected the pro forma request.

Can Trump still be elected president?

Nothing in the US Constitution bars a convicted criminal from running for the nation’s highest office, University of California, Los Angeles law professor Richard L. Hasen has consistently said.

“The Constitution contains only limited qualifications for running for office (being at least 35 years old, a natural born citizen, and at least 14 years a resident of the U.S.),” Hasen continued.

Will the conviction cost Trump his right to vote?

Trump is a Florida resident. When it comes to the Manhattan guilty verdict just rendered, Trump’s right to vote in Florida in November’s election will depend on whether he is sentenced to a term in prison and if he has finished serving that prison sentence by the time of the election.

Florida’s felon voting prohibitions apply to people with out-of-state convictions. However, if a Floridian’s conviction is out of state, Florida defers to that state’s laws for how felon can regain their voting rights.

For the first time in history, a former US president has been convicted of a felony.

A jury on Thursday found Donald Trump guilty on 34 charges of falsifying business records. Prosecutors alleged that the former president engaged in a cover-up scheme to hide reimbursement payments made to his former attorney, Michael Cohen, who had paid hush money to adult film star Stormy Daniels to stop her from going public about a past affair with Trump before the 2016 presidential election. Trump has denied the affair.

Trump is facing 3 other criminal cases while running again for president

From CNN’s Devan Cole, Amy O'Kruk and Curt Merrill

Former President Donald Trump appears in Manhattan Criminal Court, Thursday, May 30, in New York.

The hush money criminal case against former President Donald Trump was only one of four criminal cases he is juggling while running again for president.

The former president still faces criminal indictments in Georgia, Washington, DC, and Florida. Trump has pleaded not guilty to every charge in these cases.

Here's a recap of each case:

 • Hush money: Trump was first indicted in March 2023 by the Manhattan district attorney on state charges related to a hush-money payment to an adult film star in 2016. Prosecutors alleged Trump was part of an illegal conspiracy to undermine the integrity of the 2016 election. Further, they alleged he was part of an unlawful plan to suppress negative information, including the $130,000 payment. He was found guilty of all 34 counts on Thursday.
 • Classified documents: Trump was indicted in June 2023 by a federal grand jury in Miami for taking classified national defense documents from the White House after he left office and resisting the government’s attempts to retrieve the materials. The National Archives said in early 2022 that at least 15 boxes of White House records were recovered from the estate, including some that were classified . The charges were brought by special counsel Jack Smith. However, Judge Aileen Cannon has indefinitely postponed the trial , citing significant issues around classified evidence that would need to be worked out before the federal criminal case goes to a jury.
 • Federal election interference: Smith separately charged the former president last August with four crimes over his efforts to reverse the 2020 election results. The indictment alleges Trump and a co-conspirator "attempted to exploit the violence and chaos at the Capitol by calling lawmakers to convince them ... to delay the certification" of the election. That case is currently on hold as the Supreme Court weighs Trump’s claims of presidential immunity in the matter.
 • Fulton County: State prosecutors in Georgia brought a similar election subversion case against Trump and others. An Atlanta-based grand jury on August 14, 2023, indicted Trump and 18 others on state charges stemming from their alleged efforts to overturn the former president’s 2020 electoral defeat. A trial date has not yet been set in that case.

Melania Trump is in New York City, source says

From CNN's Kristen Holmes

Former first lady Melania Trump and her son, Barron Trump, are currently in New York, a source familiar with the matter told CNN. The two were already in New York when the verdict was read earlier Thursday, although it was not immediately clear when they arrived in the city.

Melania Trump did not attend a fundraiser dinner with Trump at a private residence Thursday night in New York City.

She was not seen at court during the trial.

Schumer says “no one is above the law” after Trump verdict

From CNN's Morgan Rimmer

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer posted a brief statement about the verdict in former President Donald Trump's hush money trial on social media.

"No one is above the law. The verdict speaks for itself," the New York Democrat said.

Trump attorney Todd Blanche outlines appeal arguments

Todd Blanche appears on CNN after a Manhattan jury found his client, Donald Trump, guilty of falsifying business records on Thursday, May 30

Donald Trump's attorney Todd Blanche told CNN's Kaitlan Collins Thursday that the former president's legal team plans to argue in its appeal of the verdict that the jury was biased against Trump and the timing of the trial was unfair.

"Every single person on the jury knew Donald Trump as president, as candidate, from 'The Apprentice' so I don't accept that this was a fair place to try President Trump," Blanche said.

He added: "There was so much publicity around the witnesses and around – leading up to the trial that our system of justice isn't supposed to be a system where every person who walks into the courtroom knows about the case."

"The law says a person is entitled to a fair trial in front of a jury of their peers and we just think that because of everything around the lead up this trial, it made it very difficult for the jury to evaluate the evidence kind of independent of what they knew coming in," Blanche said.

Blanche previewed that Trump's legal team will now "vigorously fight" with motions due in a few weeks. And "if that is not successful," the attorney said they will appeal following the sentencing in July.
