An essay is a common type of academic writing that you'll likely be asked to do in multiple classes. Before you start writing your essay, make sure you understand the details of the assignment so that you know how to approach the essay and what your focus should be. Once you've chosen a topic, do some research and narrow down the main argument(s) you'd like to make. From there, you'll need to write an outline and flesh out your essay, which should consist of an introduction, body, and conclusion. After your essay is drafted, spend some time revising it to ensure your writing is as strong as possible.
Understanding Your Assignment
![writing an sa Step 1 Read your assignment carefully.](https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/3/3b/Write-an-Essay-Step-1-Version-3.jpg/v4-460px-Write-an-Essay-Step-1-Version-3.jpg)
- The compare/contrast essay , which focuses on analyzing the similarities and differences between 2 things, such as ideas, people, events, places, or works of art.
- The narrative essay , which tells a story.
- The argumentative essay , in which the writer uses evidence and examples to convince the reader of their point of view.
- The critical or analytical essay, which examines something (such as a text or work of art) in detail. This type of essay may attempt to answer specific questions about the subject or focus more generally on its meaning.
- The informative essay , that educates the reader about a topic.
![writing an sa Step 2 Check for formatting and style requirements.](https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/f/f8/Write-an-Essay-Step-2-Version-2.jpg/v4-460px-Write-an-Essay-Step-2-Version-2.jpg)
- How long your essay should be
- Which citation style to use
- Formatting requirements, such as margin size , line spacing, and font size and type

Christopher Taylor, Professor of English, tells us: "Most essays will contain an introduction, a body or discussion portion, and a conclusion. When assigned a college essay, make sure to check the specific structural conventions related to your essay genre , your field of study, and your professor's expectations."
![writing an sa Step 3 Narrow down your topic so your essay has a clear focus.](https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/7/72/Write-an-Essay-Step-3-Version-2.jpg/v4-460px-Write-an-Essay-Step-3-Version-2.jpg)
- If you're doing a research-based essay , you might find some inspiration from reading through some of the major sources on the subject.
- For a critical essay, you might choose to focus on a particular theme in the work you're discussing, or analyze the meaning of a specific passage.
![writing an sa Step 4 Ask for clarification if you don't understand the assignment.](https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/6/66/Write-an-Essay-Step-4-Version-3.jpg/v4-460px-Write-an-Essay-Step-4-Version-3.jpg)
- If you're having trouble narrowing down your topic, your instructor might be able to provide guidance or inspiration.
Planning and Organizing Your Essay
![writing an sa Step 1 Find some reputable sources on your topic.](https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/a/a4/Write-an-Essay-Step-5-Version-3.jpg/v4-460px-Write-an-Essay-Step-5-Version-3.jpg)
- Academic books and journals tend to be good sources of information. In addition to print sources, you may be able to find reliable information in scholarly databases such as JSTOR and Google Scholar.
- You can also look for primary source documents, such as letters, eyewitness accounts, and photographs.
- Always evaluate your sources critically. Even research papers by reputable academics can contain hidden biases, outdated information, and simple errors or faulty logic.
Tip: In general, Wikipedia articles are not considered appropriate sources for academic writing. However, you may be able to find useful sources in the “References” section at the end of the article.
![writing an sa Step 2 Make notes...](https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/9/9b/Write-an-Essay-Step-6-Version-3.jpg/v4-460px-Write-an-Essay-Step-6-Version-3.jpg)
- You might find it helpful to write your notes down on individual note cards or enter them into a text document on your computer so you can easily copy, paste , and rearrange them however you like.
- Try organizing your notes into different categories so you can identify specific ideas you'd like to focus on. For example, if you're analyzing a short story , you might put all your notes on a particular theme or character together.
![writing an sa Step 3 Choose a question to answer or an issue to address.](https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/6/64/Write-an-Essay-Step-7-Version-3.jpg/v4-460px-Write-an-Essay-Step-7-Version-3.jpg)
- For example, if your essay is about the factors that led to the end of the Bronze Age in the ancient Middle East, you might focus on the question, “What role did natural disasters play in the collapse of Late Bronze Age society?”
![writing an sa Step 4 Create a thesis...](https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/2/2f/Write-an-Essay-Step-8-Version-2.jpg/v4-460px-Write-an-Essay-Step-8-Version-2.jpg)
- One easy way to come up with a thesis statement is to briefly answer the main question you would like to address.
- For example, if the question is “What role did natural disasters play in the collapse of Late Bronze Age society?” then your thesis might be, “Natural disasters during the Late Bronze Age destabilized local economies across the region. This set in motion a series of mass migrations of different peoples, creating widespread conflict that contributed to the collapse of several major Bronze Age political centers.”
![writing an sa Step 5 Write an outline...](https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/9/9d/Write-an-Essay-Step-9-Version-2.jpg/v4-460px-Write-an-Essay-Step-9-Version-2.jpg)
- When you write the outline, think about how you would like to organize your essay. For example, you might start with your strongest arguments and then move to the weakest ones. Or, you could begin with a general overview of the source you're analyzing and then move on to addressing the major themes, tone, and style of the work.
- Introduction
- Point 1, with supporting examples
- Point 2, with supporting examples
- Point 3, with supporting examples
- Major counter-argument(s) to your thesis
- Your rebuttals to the counter-argument(s)
Drafting the Essay
![writing an sa Step 1 Write an introduction...](https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/4/46/Write-an-Essay-Step-10-Version-2.jpg/v4-460px-Write-an-Essay-Step-10-Version-2.jpg)
- For example, if you're writing a critical essay about a work of art, your introduction might start with some basic information about the work, such as who created it, when and where it was created, and a brief description of the work itself. From there, introduce the question(s) about the work you'd like to address and present your thesis.
- A strong introduction should also contain a brief transitional sentence that creates a link to the first point or argument you would like to make. For example, if you're discussing the use of color in a work of art, lead-in by saying you'd like to start with an overview of symbolic color use in contemporary works by other artists.
Tip: Some writers find it helpful to write the introduction after they've written the rest of the essay. Once you've written out your main points, it's easier to summarize the gist of your essay in a few introductory sentences.
![writing an sa Step 2 Present your argument(s) in detail.](https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/9/91/Write-an-Essay-Step-11-Version-2.jpg/v4-460px-Write-an-Essay-Step-11-Version-2.jpg)
- For example, your topic sentence might be something like, “Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes stories are among the many literary influences apparent in P. G. Wodehouse's Jeeves novels.” You could then back this up by quoting a passage that contains a reference to Sherlock Holmes.
- Try to show how the arguments in each paragraph link back to the main thesis of your essay.
![writing an sa Step 3 Use transition sentences between paragraphs.](https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/c/cd/Write-an-Essay-Step-12-Version-2.jpg/v4-460px-Write-an-Essay-Step-12-Version-2.jpg)
- When creating transitions, transitional phrases can be helpful. For example, use words and phrases such as “In addition,” “Therefore,” “Similarly,” “Subsequently,” or “As a result.”
- For example, if you've just discussed the use of color to create contrast in a work of art, you might start the next paragraph with, “In addition to color, the artist also uses different line weights to distinguish between the more static and dynamic figures in the scene.”
![writing an sa Step 4 Address possible counterarguments.](https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/8/82/Write-an-Essay-Step-13-Version-2.jpg/v4-460px-Write-an-Essay-Step-13-Version-2.jpg)
- For example, if you're arguing that a particular kind of shrimp decorates its shell with red algae to attract a mate, you'll need to address the counterargument that the shell decoration is a warning to predators. You might do this by presenting evidence that the red shrimp are, in fact, more likely to get eaten than shrimp with undecorated shells.
![writing an sa Step 5 Cite your sources...](https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/b/bd/Write-an-Essay-Step-14-Version-2.jpg/v4-460px-Write-an-Essay-Step-14-Version-2.jpg)
- The way you cite your sources will vary depending on the citation style you're using. Typically, you'll need to include the name of the author, the title and publication date of the source, and location information such as the page number on which the information appears.
- In general, you don't need to cite common knowledge. For example, if you say, “A zebra is a type of mammal,” you probably won't need to cite a source.
- If you've cited any sources in the essay, you'll need to include a list of works cited (or a bibliography ) at the end.
![writing an sa Step 6 Wrap up with...](https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/d/db/Write-an-Essay-Step-15-Version-2.jpg/v4-460px-Write-an-Essay-Step-15-Version-2.jpg)
- Keep your conclusion brief. While the appropriate length will vary based on the length of the essay, it should typically be no longer than 1-2 paragraphs.
- For example, if you're writing a 1,000-word essay, your conclusion should be about 4-5 sentences long. [16] X Research source
Revising the Essay
![writing an sa Step 1 Take a break...](https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/e/ee/Write-an-Essay-Step-16-Version-3.jpg/v4-460px-Write-an-Essay-Step-16-Version-3.jpg)
- If you don't have time to spend a couple of days away from your essay, at least take a few hours to relax or work on something else.
![writing an sa Step 2 Read over your draft to check for obvious problems.](https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/2/2a/Write-an-Essay-Step-17-Version-3.jpg/v4-460px-Write-an-Essay-Step-17-Version-3.jpg)
- Excessive wordiness
- Points that aren't explained enough
- Tangents or unnecessary information
- Unclear transitions or illogical organization
- Spelling , grammar , style, and formatting problems
- Inappropriate language or tone (e.g., slang or informal language in an academic essay)
![writing an sa Step 3 Correct any major problems you find.](https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/a/aa/Write-an-Essay-Step-18-Version-2.jpg/v4-460px-Write-an-Essay-Step-18-Version-2.jpg)
- You might have to cut material from your essay in some places and add new material to others.
- You might also end up reordering some of the content of the essay if you think that helps it flow better.
![writing an sa Step 4 Proofread your revised essay.](https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/8/83/Write-an-Essay-Step-19-Version-3.jpg/v4-460px-Write-an-Essay-Step-19-Version-3.jpg)
- Read over each line slowly and carefully. It may be helpful to read each sentence out loud to yourself.
Tip: If possible, have someone else check your work. When you've been looking at your writing for too long, your brain begins to fill in what it expects to see rather than what's there, making it harder for you to spot mistakes.

If you need to write an essay, start by gathering information from reputable sources, like books from the library or scholarly journals online. Take detailed notes and keep track of which facts come from which sources. As you're taking notes, look for a central theme that you're interested in writing about to create your thesis statement. Then, organize your notes into an outline that supports and explains your thesis statement. Working from your outline, write an introduction and subsequent paragraphs to address each major point. Start every paragraph with a topic sentence that briefly explains the main point of that paragraph. Finally, finish your paper with a strong conclusion that sums up the most important points. Structuring the Essay (aka Building a Burger)
Choosing a topic, drafting the outline, creating the introduction, writing the body of the essay, concluding the essay.
- TESOL Diploma, Trinity College London
- M.A., Music Performance, Cologne University of Music
- B.A., Vocal Performance, Eastman School of Music
Writing an essay is like making a hamburger. Think of the introduction and conclusion as the bun, with the "meat" of your argument in between. The introduction is where you'll state your thesis, while the conclusion sums up your case. Both should be no more than a few sentences. The body of your essay, where you'll present facts to support your position, must be much more substantial, usually three paragraphs . Like making a hamburger, writing a good essay takes preparation. Let's get started!
Think about a hamburger for a moment. What are its three main components? There's a bun on top and a bun on the bottom. In the middle, you'll find the hamburger itself. So what does that have to do with an essay? Think of it this way:
- The top bun contains your introduction and topic statement. This paragraph begins with a hook, or factual statement intended to grab the reader's attention. It is followed by a thesis statement, an assertion that you intend to prove in the body of the essay that follows.
- The meat in the middle, called the body of the essay, is where you'll offer evidence in support of your topic or thesis. It should be three to five paragraphs in length, with each offering a main idea that is backed up by two or three statements of support.
- The bottom bun is the conclusion, which sums up the arguments you've made in the body of the essay.
Like the two pieces of a hamburger bun, the introduction and conclusion should be similar in tone, brief enough to convey your topic but substantial enough to frame the issue that you'll articulate in the meat, or body of the essay.
Before you can begin writing, you'll need to choose a topic for your essay, ideally one that you're already interested in. Nothing is harder than trying to write about something you don't care about. Your topic should be broad or common enough that most people will know at least something about what you're discussing. Technology, for example, is a good topic because it's something we can all relate to in one way or another.
Once you've chosen a topic, you must narrow it down into a single thesis or central idea. The thesis is the position you're taking in relation to your topic or a related issue. It should be specific enough that you can bolster it with just a few relevant facts and supporting statements. Think about an issue that most people can relate to, such as: "Technology is changing our lives."
Once you've selected your topic and thesis, it's time to create a roadmap for your essay that will guide you from the introduction to conclusion. This map, called an outline, serves as a diagram for writing each paragraph of the essay, listing the three or four most important ideas that you want to convey. These ideas don't need to be written as complete sentences in the outline; that's what the actual essay is for.
Here's one way of diagramming an essay on how technology is changing our lives:
Introductory Paragraph
- Hook: Statistics on home workers
- Thesis: Technology has changed work
- Links to main ideas to be developed in the essay: Technology has changed where, how and when we work
Body Paragraph I
- Main idea: Technology has changed where we can work
- Support: Work on the road + example
- Support: Work from home + example statistic
Body Paragraph II
- Main idea: Technology has changed how we work
- Support: Technology allows us to do more on our own + example of multitasking
- Support: Technology allows us to test our ideas in simulation + example of digital weather forecasting
Body Paragraph III
- Main idea: Technology has changed when we work
- Support: Flexible work schedules + example of telecommuters working 24/7
- Support: Technology allows us to work any time + example of people teaching online from home
Concluding Paragraph
- Review of main ideas of each paragraph
- Restatement of thesis: Technology has changed how we work
- Concluding thought: Technology will continue to change us
Note that the author uses only three or four main ideas per paragraph, each with a main idea, supporting statements, and a summary.
Once you've written and refined your outline, it's time to write the essay. Begin with the introductory paragraph . This is your opportunity to hook the reader's interest in the very first sentence, which can be an interesting fact, a quotation, or a rhetorical question , for instance.
After this first sentence, add your thesis statement . The thesis clearly states what you hope to express in the essay. Follow that with a sentence to introduce your body paragraphs . This not only gives the essay structure, but it also signals to the reader what is to come. For example:
Forbes magazine reports that "One in five Americans work from home". Does that number surprise you? Information technology has revolutionized the way we work. Not only can we work almost anywhere, we can also work at any hour of the day. Also, the way we work has changed greatly through the introduction of information technology into the workplace.
Notice how the author uses a fact and addresses the reader directly to grab their attention.
Once you've written the introduction, it's time to develop the meat of your thesis in three or four paragraphs. Each should contain a single main idea, following the outline you prepared earlier. Use two or three sentences to support the main idea, citing specific examples. Conclude each paragraph with a sentence that summarizes the argument you've made in the paragraph.
Let's consider how the location of where we work has changed. In the past, workers were required to commute to work. These days, many can choose to work from the home. From Portland, Ore., to Portland, Maine, you will find employees working for companies located hundreds or even thousands of miles away. Too, the use of robotics to manufacture products has led to employees spending more time behind a computer screen than on the production line. Whether it's in the countryside or in the city, you'll find people working everywhere they can get online. No wonder we see so many people working at cafes!
In this case, the author continues to directly address the reader while offering examples to support their assertion.
The summary paragraph summarizes your essay and is often a reverse of the introductory paragraph. Begin the summary paragraph by quickly restating the principal ideas of your body paragraphs. The penultimate (next to last) sentence should restate your basic thesis of the essay. Your final statement can be a future prediction based on what you have shown in the essay.
In this example, the author concludes by making a prediction based on the arguments made in the essay.
Information technology has changed the time, place and manner in which we work. In short, information technology has made the computer into our office. As we continue to use new technologies, we will continue to see change. However, our need to work in order to lead happy and productive lives will never change. The where, when and how we work will never change the reason why we work.

SAT Writing , SAT Essay

On every SAT Essay, you'll have to read an argument meant to persuade a broad audience and discuss how well the author argues his or her point. The passage you'll have to read will change from test to test, but you'll always need to analyze the author's argument and write a coherent and organized essay explaining this analysis.
In this article, we've compiled a list of the 14 real SAT essay prompts that the College Board has released (either in The Official SAT Study Guide or separately online) for the new SAT. This is the most comprehensive set of new SAT essay prompts online today.
At the end of this article, we'll also guide you through how to get the most out of these prompts and link to our expert resources on acing the SAT essay. I'll discuss how the SAT essay prompts are valuable not just because they give you a chance to write a practice essay, but because of what they reveal about the essay task itself.
UPDATE: SAT Essay No Longer Offered
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});.
In January 2021, the College Board announced that after June 2021, it would no longer offer the Essay portion of the SAT (except at schools who opt in during School Day Testing). It is now no longer possible to take the SAT Essay, unless your school is one of the small number who choose to offer it during SAT School Day Testing.
While most colleges had already made SAT Essay scores optional, this move by the College Board means no colleges now require the SAT Essay. It will also likely lead to additional college application changes such not looking at essay scores at all for the SAT or ACT, as well as potentially requiring additional writing samples for placement.
What does the end of the SAT Essay mean for your college applications? Check out our article on the College Board's SAT Essay decision for everything you need to know.
SAT essay prompts always keep to the same basic format. Not only is the prompt format consistent from test to test, but what you're actually asked to do (discuss how an author builds an argument) also remains the same across different test administrations.
The College Board's predictability with SAT essay helps students focus on preparing for the actual analytical task, rather than having to think up stuff on their feet. Every time, before the passage, you'll see the following:
- evidence, such as facts or examples, to support claims.
- reasoning to develop ideas and to connect claims and evidence.
- stylistic or persuasive elements, such as word choice or appeals to emotion, to add power to the ideas expressed.
And after the passage, you'll see this:
"Write an essay in which you explain how [the author] builds an argument to persuade [her/his] audience that [whatever the author is trying to argue for]. In your essay, analyze how [the author] uses one or more of the features listed in the box above (or features of your own choice) to strengthen the logic and persuasiveness of his argument. Be sure that your analysis focuses on the most relevant features of the passage.
Your essay should not explain whether you agree with [the author]'s claims, but rather explain how [the author] builds an argument to persuade [her/his/their] audience."
Now that you know the format, let's look at the SAT essay prompts list.
14 Official SAT Essay Prompts
The College Board has released a limited number of prompts to help students prep for the essay. We've gathered them for you here, all in one place. We'll be sure to update this article as more prompts are released for practice and/or as more tests are released.
SPOILER ALERT : Since these are the only essay prompts that have been released so far, you may want to be cautious about spoiling them for yourself, particularly if you are planning on taking practice tests under real conditions . This is why I've organized the prompts by the 10 that are in the practice tests (so you can avoid them if need be), the ones that are available online as sample prompts, and the ones that are in the text of the Official SAT Study Guide (Redesigned SAT), all online for free.
Practice Test Prompts
These 10 prompts are taken from the practice tests that the College Board has released.
Practice Test 1 :
"Write an essay in which you explain how Jimmy Carter builds an argument to persuade his audience that the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge should not be developed for industry."
Practice Test 2 :
"Write an essay in which you explain how Martin Luther King Jr. builds an argument to persuade his audience that American involvement in the Vietnam War is unjust."
Practice Test 3 :
"Write an essay in which you explain how Eliana Dockterman builds an argument to persuade her audience that there are benefits to early exposure to technology."
Practice Test 4 :
"Write an essay in which you explain how Paul Bogard builds an argument to persuade his audience that natural darkness should be preserved."
Practice Test 5 :
"Write an essay in which you explain how Eric Klinenberg builds an argument to persuade his audience that Americans need to greatly reduce their reliance on air-conditioning."
Practice Test 6 :
"Write an essay in which you explain how Christopher Hitchens builds an argument to persuade his audience that the original Parthenon sculptures should be returned to Greece."
Practice Test 7 :
"Write an essay in which you explain how Zadie Smith builds an argument to persuade her audience that public libraries are important and should remain open"
Practice Test 8 :
"Write an essay in which you explain how Bobby Braun builds an argument to persuade his audience that the US government must continue to invest in NASA."
Practice Test 9 :
"Write an essay in which you explain how Todd Davidson builds an argument to persuade his audience that the US government must continue to fund national parks."
Practice Test 10 :
"Write an essay in which you explain how Richard Schiffman builds an argument to persuade his audience that Americans need to work fewer hours."
Special note: The prompt for Practice Test 4 also appears on the College Board's site with real sample essays written in response. If you've written a practice essay for practice test 4 and want to see what essays of different score levels look like for that particular prompt, you can go there and look at eight real student essays.

This prompt comes from the College Board website .
"Write an essay in which you explain how Dana Gioia builds an argument to persuade his audience that the decline of reading in America will have a negative effect on society."
This prompt comes from Khan Academy , where it is listed as an alternate essay prompt to go along with Practice Test 2:
"Write an essay in which you explain how Leo W. Gerard builds an argument to persuade his audience that American colleges and universities should be affordable for all students."
The Official SAT Study Guide 2020
The Official SAT Study Guide (editions published in 2015 and later available online for free) contains all 10 of the previously mentioned practice tests at the end of the book. In the section about the new SAT essay , however, there are two additional sample essay prompts (accompanied by articles to analyze).
Sample Prompt 1:
"Write an essay in which you explain how Peter S. Goodman builds an argument to persuade his audience that news organizations should increase the amount of professional foreign news coverage provided to people in the United States."
Sample Prompt 2:
"Write an essay in which you explain how Adam B. Summers builds an argument to persuade his audience that plastic shopping bags should not be banned."

How Do You Get the Most Out of These Prompts?
Now that you have all the prompts released by the College Board, it's important to know the best way to use them. Make sure you have a good balance between quality and quantity, and don't burn through all 14 of the real prompts in a row— take the time to learn from your experiences writing the practice essays.
Step By Step Guide on How to Practice Using the Article
#1: Understand how the SAT essay is graded .
#2: Follow along as we write a high-scoring SAT essay, step by step .
#3: Plan a set of features you'll look for in the SAT essay readings and practice writing about them fluidly. This doesn't just mean identifying a technique, like asking a rhetorical question, but explaining why it is persuasive and what effect it has on the reader in the context of a particular topic. We have more information on this step in our article about 6 SAT persuasive devices you can use .
#4: Choose a prompt at random from above, or choose a topic that you think is going to be hard for you to detach from (because you'll want to write about the topic, rather than the argument) set timer to 50 minutes and write the essay. No extra time allowed!
#5: Grade the essay, using the official essay rubric to give yourself a score out of 8 in the reading, analysis, and writing sections.
#6: Repeat steps 4 and 5. Choose the prompts you think will be the hardest for you so that you can so that you're prepared for the worst when the test day comes
#7: If you run out of official prompts to practice with, use the official prompts as models to find examples of other articles you could write about . Start by looking for op-ed articles in online news publications like The New York Times, The Atlantic, LA Times , and so on. For instance, the passage about the plastic bag ban in California (Official SAT Study Guide sample essay prompt 2, above) has a counterpoint here —you could try analyzing and writing about that article as well.
Any additional articles you use for practice on the SAT essay must match the following criteria:
- ideally 650-750 words , although it'll be difficult to find an op-ed piece that's naturally that short. Try to aim for nothing longer than 2000 words, though, or the scope of the article is likely to be wider than anything you'll encounter on the SAT.
- always argumentative/persuasive . The author (or authors) is trying to get readers to agree with a claim or idea being put forward.
- always intended for a wide audience . All the information you need to deconstruct the persuasiveness of the argument is in the passage. This means that articles with a lot of technical jargon that's not explained in the article are not realistic passage to practice with.

Video Description: How to Send a Letter or Postcard (TXT 4 KB)
How to Send a Letter or Postcard: Domestic
Sending mail with USPS is easy! Our video will help you with most letters, cards, and postcards you send domestically (inside the U.S.), including U.S. territories and military bases in the U.S. and abroad.
For how to ship a package, see How to Send a Package: Domestic .
Send Mail: Step-by-Step Instructions
![writing an sa Envelope and postcard](https://www.usps.com/assets/images/ship/send-step-1.jpg)
Step 1: Choose Envelope or Postcard
Envelopes are for sending flat, flexible things, like letters, cards, checks, forms, and other paper goods. For just 1 $0.68 First-Class Mail ® Forever ® stamp , you can send 1 oz (about 4 sheets of regular, 8-1/2" x 11" paper in a rectangular envelope) to anywhere in the U.S.!
![writing an sa No. 10 envelope compared to the minimum and maximum envelope sizes](https://www.usps.com/assets/images/ship/step-1-env.jpg)
Envelopes must be rectangular and made of paper to qualify for letter prices. Your envelope can be a maximum of 11-1/2" long x 6-1/8" high. (A standard No. 10 envelope is 9-1/2" long x 4-1/8" high.) You can fold what you put in your envelope, but it needs to stay flat—no more than 1/4" thick.
If you want to send letter-sized papers without folding them, you can use a large envelope (called a "flat"); the postage for flats starts at $1.39 . If your large envelope is nonrectangular, rigid (can't bend), or lumpy (not uniformly thick), you'll have to pay the package price.
TIP: If your envelope can't fit through USPS mail processing machines, or is rigid, lumpy or has clasps, string, or buttons, it's "nonmachinable" and you'll have to pay $0.44 more to send it. ( See additional postage in Step 3 .) You'll also have to pay more if your envelopes are square or vertical (taller than they are wide).
Postcards are for short messages that you don't need to put in an envelope. Save money using a $0.53 postcard stamp to send a standard-sized postcard anywhere in the U.S. Standard postcards are usually made of paper, are between 5" to 6" long and 3-1/2" to 4-1/4" high, and are between 0.007" and 0.016" thick.
![writing an sa Envelope and postcard with return address written in the top left corner and delivery address in the bottom center.](https://www.usps.com/assets/images/ship/send-step-2.jpg)
Step 2: Address Your Mail
Envelopes: Write your address (the "return" or "sender" address) in the top left corner. Write the delivery address (the "recipient" address) in the bottom center.
Postcards: Postcards come in different formats, so write the delivery address in the space it gives you (on the same side you write your message and put the stamp).
Print your return address and the delivery address clearly, in the correct spots, to make sure your mail is delivered on time.
Address Format Tips
- Use a pen or permanent marker.
- Do not use commas or periods.
- Include the ZIP+4 ® Code whenever possible.
Write Sender Address
Write your address (the "return address") in the top-left corner. Include the following on separate lines:
- Your full name or company name
- Apartment or suite number
- Full street address
- City, State, and ZIP+4 Code
Write Delivery Address
Write the delivery address (the "recipient" address) in the bottom center of the envelope. Include the following on separate lines:
- Recipient's full name or company name
If the apartment or suite number cannot fit on the delivery address line above the city, state, and ZIP+4 Code, place it on a separate line immediately above the delivery address line.
Write the sender's address in the top-left corner. Include the following on separate lines:
- Full street address and apartment or suite number, if applicable
Special U.S. Addresses
Puerto rico.
Some Puerto Rico addresses include an urbanization or community code for a specific area or development. Addresses with an urbanization code, abbreviated URB, should be written on 4 lines:
MS MARIA SUAREZ URB LAS GLADIOLAS 150 CALLE A SAN JUAN PR 00926-3232
More Puerto Rico Address Examples
U.S. Virgin Islands
Virgin Islands addresses have the same format as standard addresses. The right abbreviation for this territory is "VI," not "US VI" or "USA VI":
MS JOAN SMITH RR 1 BOX 6601 KINGSHILL VI 00850-9802
Military and Diplomatic Mail (APO/FPO/DPO)
Mail to military and diplomatic addresses is treated differently:
- Do not include the city or country name when you send something to an APO/FDO/DPO address in another country. This keeps your mail out of foreign mail networks.
- Do include unit and box numbers if they're assigned:
SEAMAN JOSEPH SMITH UNIT 100100 BOX 4120 FPO AP 96691
More Details on Military Addresses
When you're done addressing your envelope, put what you're sending inside the envelope, then close and seal it (using the envelope's glue or tape).
![writing an sa Envelope and postcard, each with a stamp in the upper right corner](https://www.usps.com/assets/images/ship/send-step-3.jpg)
Step 3: Calculate Postage (& Add Insurance or Extra Services)
A First-Class Mail ® Forever stamp costs $0.68 and goes in the upper right corner of the envelope. (You can also use any combination of stamps that adds up to $0.68.)
If your letter is heavier or bigger, or if you want to add insurance or extra services like Certified Mail ® service, you'll pay more.
A standard postcard stamp costs $0.53 . (Large or square postcards will cost more.) Put the postcard stamp in the space provided near the delivery address.
![writing an sa](https://www.usps.com/assets/images/ship/step-3-postage.jpg)
Postage for letters mostly depends on weight and size/shape. You can weigh your letter with a kitchen scale, postal scale , at a self-service kiosk, or at the Post Office ™ counter.
TIP: As a rule of thumb, you can send 1 oz (4 sheets of printer paper and a business-sized envelope) for 1 First-Class Mail ® Forever ® stamp (currently $0.68).
The postage for a large envelope (or flat) starts at $1.39 for 1 oz.
Where Can I Buy Postage?
- The Postal Store ® Shop online for all stamps and add-on postage for oversized or heavier envelopes.
- Post Office Locations Buy stamps at Post Office locations , self-service kiosks , or at National Retailers such as grocery and drug stores.
TIP: If you're sending larger envelopes (flats) using Priority Mail ® or Priority Mail Express ® service, you can use Click-N-Ship ® service to pay for and print your own postage online.
Additional Postage
If your envelope weighs over 1 oz, you can buy additional postage in the amount you need:
- Each additional 1 oz is $0.24, for letters up to 3.5 oz and large envelopes up to 13 oz.
- Nonmachinable items, including envelopes that are lumpy or rigid, or have clasps, string, or buttons will cost $0.44 more to send. You'll also have to pay more if your envelopes are square or vertical (taller than they are wide).
- You can also buy 1¢, 2¢, 3¢, 4¢, 5¢, and 10¢ stamps at The Postal Store .
TIP: Put the stamp on last; that way, if you make a mistake at any other point, you won't waste a stamp.
Calculate a Price
Add-On Services
If you want insurance, proof of delivery, signature services, or other optional services, you'll have to pay extra.
Our Insurance & Extra Services page has more details; some of the more common add-on services for letters include:
- Certified Mail ® : Get proof that you mailed your item and that the recipient signed for it.
- Registered Mail ® : USPS's most secure mail service–mail is processed manually, handled separately and securely, and signed for along every step of its journey. The recipient must sign for the mail to confirm delivery (or attempted delivery).
- Return Receipt: You'll get a printed or emailed delivery record showing the recipient's signature. You can combine Return Receipt with other services, including Certified Mail, Registered Mail, Priority Mail Express ® service, and more.
- Adult Signature Required: Only an adult (age 21+) can sign for the mail after showing a valid government ID .
Postage Options
There are several ways to get postage for your envelope.
- The Postal Store ® --> ® and Priority Mail Express ® envelopes.
- Post Office ™ Locations --> ® such as grocery and drug stores.
![writing an sa Send your letter or postcard from your mailbox, a blue collection box, or Post Office.](https://www.usps.com/assets/images/ship/send-step-4.jpg)
Step 4: Send Your Mail
Once your envelope or postcard has the correct addresses and postage, you can send it several ways, including putting it in your mailbox or dropping it in a blue collection box or at a Post Office ™ location.
![writing an sa Send your letter or postcard from your mailbox, a blue collection box, or Post Office.](https://www.usps.com/assets/images/ship/step-4-dropoff.jpg)
- Put your letter inside your mailbox and raise the flag (if you have one).
- If you have a cluster mailbox, drop it in the outgoing mail slot.
- Drop it off in a blue collection box.
- Take it to a Post Office lobby drop.
Important Note: If your envelope has postage stamps and weighs more than 10 oz or is thicker than 1/2", you can't put it in a collection box; you have to give it to an employee at a Post Office location. See more details on What Can and Cannot be Deposited in a Collection Box?
Bonus: Sending Mail Pro Tips
The Postal Service uses high-speed sorting machines to help process and deliver 425.3 million mail pieces each day. Here are some extra tips to improve your mail sending experience:
- Stay flexible : Don't send rigid (hard) objects in paper envelopes.
- Sending embellished invitations (for weddings, graduations, etc.)? Get them hand-canceled or put them inside another envelope.
- Need tracking? Learn about your options.
![writing an sa Flexible and flat items only (like paper or photos, less than 1/4 inch thick). Rigid or lumpy Items (like keys or flash drives) can tear your envelope.](https://www.usps.com/assets/images/ship/prevent-damage.jpg)
Stay Flexible
Postcards, letter envelopes, and large envelopes (flats) all need to bend to fit through USPS ® high-speed sorting machines.
- OK: Flexible, flat things like stickers, photos, trading cards, etc. should be okay—as long as your envelope stays flat, not lumpy, and less than 1/4" thick.
- Not OK: Don't put rigid objects (like flash drives, coins, keys, hard plastic card cases, etc.) loose in unpadded paper envelopes: They could get torn out of the envelope, jam the sorting machines, cause a delay, or even get lost.
Instead, for rigid and odd-shaped objects (or things you don't want to get bent), we recommend using a padded envelope or small box and sending it as a package .
Sending Embellished Invitations (for Weddings, Graduations, etc.)
If you want to send a specially decorated envelope (like some wedding invitations):
- You can pay the extra fee for nonmachinable First-Class Mail ® items, bring your mail to the Post Office™ counter, and ask the retail associate to hand-cancel your embellished invitations.
- For externally decorated invitations: If you use wax seals, strings, ribbons, etc. on your envelopes, don't try to send them exposed. Instead, to make sure your envelopes arrive looking the way your designer intended, put them inside another envelope .
Need Tracking?
Tracking is not available for First-Class Mail items. If you'd like to get tracking information for your letter:
- You can pay extra to send your letter using Priority Mail Express ® or Priority Mail ® service.
- You can get delivery confirmation by adding Certified Mail ® or Registered Mail ® service. (You can even combine it with Return Receipt if you want the recipient's signature.)

AI language translation startup DeepL nabs $300M on a $2B valuation to focus on B2B growth
![writing an sa](https://techcrunch.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Jarek_DeepL.jpg?w=1024)
More funding is being poured into startups focused on AI. DeepL , which builds automated text translation and writing tools that compete against the likes of Google Translate and Grammarly, said on Wednesday that it has raised an additional $300 million. It is now valued at $2 billion, post-money.
This round, led by Index Ventures, underscores the frenetic interest that investors have in AI startups at the moment and how companies are capitalizing on that opportunity while they can. DeepL, which is still not profitable, was valued at $1 billion in January 2023 , when it raised just over $100 million.
The new money will be used to drive more sales and marketing, as well as further research and development.
The company, based in Cologne, Germany, said it has more than 100,000 businesses and organizations using its tools. Given that this is just a tiny percentage of the company’s addressable market, the aim is to try to scale that significantly.
CEO and founder Jarek Kutylowski told TechCrunch in an interview earlier this month that the company has largely grown organically so far, and it was looking to ramp up sales and marketing efforts to add more customers and expand what it does with those it already has.
That highlights a key issue for AI companies targeting other businesses: Although many executives are pressing their teams to come up with strategies for how AI can be used in their organizations, many projects have failed to progress beyond the pilot or small deployment phase. Ramping that up will be of prime importance to AI tech vendors.
“Inbound is great, but we want to develop a stronger relationship with our customers,” he said. “We’re working hard on developing a better outbound function, because inbound is only going to get you so far. At some point, you have to start solving the problems together with your customers. The company’s transforming quite a bit into this enterprise direction, which is complicated and interesting for a research based company.”
Kutylowski said that about 60% of the company’s staff are technologists at the moment, and it will be hiring more non-technical personnel going forward. Indeed, balancing that with a focus on research will be one of DeepL’s big challenges.
The startup supports 32 different languages at the moment, and it has been expanding its product portfolio steadily. The latest addition to the list is one very much focused on enterprises: DeepL Write Pro is described as “a writing assistant specifically tailored for business.” Customers signing up for DeepL’s tools include Zendesk, Nikkei, Coursera and Deutsche Bahn, it said.
“Companies want to have control over how their employees speak, right?” Kutylowski said.
However, DeepL faces potentially strong competition from a wide swath of companies: Some specialize in the same area, and platform companies like Google, Amazon and Microsoft already have operations in areas like translation and are looking to enhance them further with AI.
Some of the newer, foundational AI companies like OpenAI or Anthropic have not made headway into the same space as DeepL yet, but there is an obvious opportunity for them, too. Some of these companies might not be focusing on translation and writing improvements right now, but making AI feel more seamless and “human” will continue to be a priority, so DeepL cannot rest on what it claims to be its leading position today.
ICONIQ Growth, Teachers’ Venture Growth, and previous backers IVP, Atomico and WiL also participated in the round.
“DeepL’s runaway success is a bit of an ‘open secret’ in the business community,” said Danny Rimer of Index Ventures in a statement. “The company is exceptionally thoughtful about creating cutting-edge AI products that deliver real and immediate value to their customers.”
