Taare zameen par – a review.

Taare Zameen Par – A Review

If I were to describe  Taare Zameen Par  in one line, I’d  say – A movie that takes you back to your childhood days and makes you question society’s insistence on being the best.

Aamir Khan’s directorial debut TZP is the story of a dyslexic boy struggling for his identity. Ishaan Awasthi (Darsheel Safary) is a misfit in a world enamoured by grades, ranks and trophies. Labelled a loser by his teachers, friends and classmates; he finds no sympathy and understanding at home. Taare highlights not only the child’s struggle but also the subtle ways in which parents burden a child with their expectations, sometimes killing their inherent talents.

Taare Zamen Par evokes a strong sense of nostalgia and takes you back to your childhood days – vibrant colours, paper planes, pranks, homework and weird teachers in school. Aamir shows tremendous potential as a director in his debut movie. He beautifully captures the world from Ishaan’s eyes. Although in the scene where Ishaan is attempting, the maths quiz is highly reminiscent of Calvin’s (Calving and Hobbes) spaceman spiff stunts.

Music of the movie is average with a few good songs – Title song, Maa and Mera Jahaan.

All the actors have performed realistically. The teachers, with their weird peculiarities, make the viewer laugh. Darsheel gives a brilliant performance.

Overall a great movie and must watch. It might just make some parents realize that they are not merely raising a child but shaping someone’s personality.

I am not a big fan of Aamir Khan hence am probably one of the last few people in this country to watch this movie. It was very very touching. But so realistic that also a little depressing. I am not going to watch it again. The music is something I can hear over and over again.

I’m not a fan of Aamir Khan but watched the movie because of the reviews…The best part here is they’ve tried to handle a very sensitive and touching subject that parents of most of the children suffering with this disorder tend to miss…

the obviously sad or bad part is it was totally bogged down with emotions…I cant handle too much drama though 🙂

Positive Messages

Every child is special and unique in their own way. Pressurizing kids into scoring better grades is wrong. One should not be afraid of being different from the norm.

Positive Role Models

Ishaan is a free-spirited and utterly creative young boy. He stays resilient even when no one understands his dyslexia. Ram Shankar Nikumbh is an honest and determined teacher. He stands with Ishaan and helps him learn at a rate he is comfortable with. Yohaan, Ishaan's brother, and Rajan, Ishaan's friend, support and care for him throughout.

Diverse Representations

All characters are Indian with the film panning across Mumbai. Characters have dyslexia, developmental disorders, and locomotor disabilities but they are not defined by their condition.

Violence & Scariness

A child contemplates suicide. There are several brawls between kids that cause scrapes and bruises. A child is slapped on multiple occasions and scolded repeatedly. Characters smack each other playfully. A person throws a lit firecracker at someone; no injury. Someone throws chalk at a child and later hits them with a ruler. A character bunks school and wanders on the road by themselves. The movie shows how some children are more vulnerable to being forced into child labor.

"Idiot," "duffer," "shut up," "get out," "shameless," "dammit," "bloody," "worthless," "brats," and "crazy." "God" is used as an exclamation. A child with dyslexia is called "mentally retarded" by another character.

What's the Story?

LIKE STARS ON EARTH follows eight-year-old Ishaan (Darsheel Safary), a carefree young boy who struggles with his grades in school. Unable to understand him, his father forcefully sends him to a boarding school. Will his new art teacher, Ram Shankar Nikumbh ( Aamir Khan ), be able to help him?

Is It Any Good?

In this bittersweet Indian drama, fierce writing, heartwarming tunes, and adorable animations are all intricately interwoven together. Like Stars on Earth (aka Taare Zameen Par ) reveals harsh truths about the education system's failure to accommodate diversity due to its obsession with uniformity and discipline. The ruthless competition and unfair stress children have to face is poignantly critiqued through the vulnerability that Safary's portrayal of Ishaan delivers. Intense, gripping, and emotionally intimate, the film deliciously explores Ishaan's rich interior world that sharply contrasts his exterior one where he's constantly ridiculed. A simple tale that's both sensitive and sensible, and a film that shouldn't be missed.

Come to think of it, after two back-to-back hits [RANG DE BASANTI, FANAA], Aamir Khan could've given a positive nod to any masala flick and chosen to work with anyone he desired. But he preferred to make a film on a dyslexic kid, make him the focal point of the story and don three caps -- producer, actor and director.

At the very outset, let's make one thing clear. TAARE ZAMEEN PAR isn't one of those films that merely entertains, but also enlightens. TAARE ZAMEEN PAR is one film that makes you peep into a child's mind and how some parents, in their pursuit to make them 'stronger' academically, forget that there's hitherto untapped talent that needs to be nourished and encouraged.

TAARE ZAMEEN PAR drives home a strong message, making you empathize with the kid, compelling you to draw parallels with your life, making one realize that some of the renowned geniuses were once scoffed at, but the world had to bow down to their intellect later.

Sure, TAARE ZAMEEN PAR boasts of a story that strikes a chord, but most importantly, it has been treated with such sensitivity and maturity that you're left shell-shocked in amazement by the sheer impact it leaves at the end of this 18 reeler.

TAARE ZAMEEN PAR heralds the birth of a topnotch storyteller -- Aamir Khan. To choose a story that's a far cry from the mundane stuff that's being churned out like factory products, requires courage and conviction and to execute it with panache is a rarity.

Those who somewhere nursed a grudge that the camera follows Aamir in all his films, will chew their words once they watch TAARE ZAMEEN PAR. Yes, Aamir has a key role to portray as an actor, but the camera captures the child's emotions like never before in a Hindi film. Also, let's also clear the myth about TAARE ZAMEEN PAR being a kiddie film. It's not! It's about children. Note the difference!

In a nutshell, TAARE ZAMEEN PAR serves as a wake up call for every parent or parent-to-be. Also, it heralds the arrival of a magnificent storyteller -- Aamir Khan. At the end of the day, it's not difficult to choose who's better -- Aamir, the actor or Aamir, the director. TAARE ZAMEEN PAR is a triumph all the way from the director's point of view.

Ishaan Awasthi [Darsheel Safary] is an eight-year-old whose world is filled with wonders that no one else seems to appreciate; colors, fish, dogs and kites are just not important in the world of adults, who are much more interested in things like homework, marks and neatness. And Ishaan just cannot seem to get anything right in class.

When he gets into far more trouble than his parents can handle, he is packed off to a boarding school to 'be disciplined'. Things are no different at his new school and Ishaan has to contend with the added trauma of separation from his family.

One day a new art teacher bursts onto the scene, Ram Shankar Nikumbh [Aamir Khan], who infects the students with joy and optimism. He breaks all the rules of 'how things are done' by asking them to think, dream and imagine, and all the children respond with enthusiasm, all except Ishaan.

Nikumbh soon realizes that Ishaan is very unhappy and he sets out to discover why. With time, patience and care, he ultimately helps Ishaan find himself.

On face-value, TAARE ZAMEEN PAR looks like a kiddie film, but as the story unfolds, you realize that the story peeps into the mind and heart of a kid, his interests, his hobbies, his strengths and weaknesses. The director opens the cards at the very outset, when you realize that the kid is just not interested in books/studies. And his interaction with his stern father, doting mother and lovable brother is straight out of life.

A number of sequences in the first hour leave you spellbound --

  • Ishaan's altercation with the neighboring kid over a cricket ball;
  • Ishaan's parents' decision of putting him in a hostel and Ishaan's constant pleas falling on deaf ears;
  • Ishaan going into a shell in the boarding school, looking disinterested in life. Also, the art teacher punishing him for his inattentive behavior.

There are several moments in the first hour that make you moist-eyed. The bonding between the mother and son is remarkable. These moments effectively capture the special bonding, making you realize that a mother's mere touch can act like a soothing balm on a troubled soul.

Aamir takes the courageous stand of placing the story on Ishaan's shoulders right through the first hour and not once do you feel that the kid doesn't have the power to keep your attention arrested.

The second hour is equally challenging and most importantly, motivating. The introduction of Aamir's character, Aamir spotting the indolent Ishaan, Aamir traveling to Mumbai to meet Ishaan's parents and then citing examples of extra-ordinary men who were ridiculed by their contemporaries/peers -- these moments linger in your memory even after the show has concluded.

But the best part is reserved for the finale -- the art competition in the penultimate twenty minutes. The emotions reach an all-time high as the kid regains his confidence. The finale would melt even the stone-hearted!

Directorially, Aamir Khan deserves distinction marks for extracting an exemplary performance from the kid and handling the plot with supreme sensitivity. In his debut film itself, Aamir proves that he's a gifted storyteller, someone who has the courage to swim against the tide and also convince the viewer that there's more to film-making than the mere masala entertainers. Bravo!

Setu's cinematography is mesmeric. The camera captures every minute detail, every emotion, every tear with precision. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's music is easy on the ears. 'Bum Bum Bole', 'Jame Raho' and the title track are first-rate compositions. Prasoon Joshi's lyrics in 'Maa' deserve special mention. Editing [Deepa Bhatia] does justice to the material. Only thing, the film, if trimmed [second hour], will only be more impactful. Animation and visual effects are fantastic.

TAARE ZAMEEN PAR belongs to Master Darsheel Safary. A performance that make the best of performances pale in comparison. A performance that deserves brownie points. A performance that'll always come first on your mind the moment someone mentions TAARE ZAMEEN PAR. A performance that's impeccable, flawless and astounding. A performance that moves you and makes you reflect on your growing years. A performance that merits a special award!

Aamir is excellent. Note his scenes with the father of the kid. First, when he visits their home. Next time, when he cites the example of Solomon Islands. Splendid! Tisca Chopra is outstanding. Here's an actress who needs to be lapped up in a big way by film-makers.

Tanay Cheda [as Ishaan's friend Rajan Damodaran] is excellent. Vipin Sharma [Ishaan's father] is slightly theatrical. Sachet Engineer [Ishaan's elder brother] is apt. The teachers have performed well.

On the whole, TAARE ZAMEEN PAR is an outstanding work of cinema. To miss it would be sacrilege. It has everything it takes to win awards and box-office rewards!

Do yourselves a favor. Watch TAARE ZAMEEN PAR with your child. It will change your world. It will also change the way you look at your kids!

CHENNAI, India — In “Taare Zameen Par” — “Star on the Ground” being the loose translation — Bollywood mainstream actor Aamir Khan has produced, directed (his debut) and acted in a radically different work from films where he made his name. Ostensibly about the learning disability dyslexia, Khan’s film goes beyond this into the realm of India’s education system. Raking in roughly $3.8 million in the opening weekend with 425 prints across the country, the film is targeted to young audiences.

Eight-year-old Ishaan Awasthi (Darsheel Safary) is a dyslexic boy, shamed and shunned by the world because he cannot keep pace with his class. His parents, Mr Awasthi (Vipin Sharma) and Maya Awasthi (Tisca Chopra), are at first bewildered because their elder son, Yohaan (Sachet Engineer), is a genius at the top of his class. Later, they get angry, particularly when Ishaan bunks school and gets his brother to forge a leave letter. When they decide to put him in a boarding school, things get worse for Ishaan, being away from the little support he got from his mother.

Related Stories

Ron howard, joe russo, john carpenter and more pay tribute to roger corman: "profound loss to cinema", cannes workers turn pre-fest meet into strike rally.

Ishaan soon gives up even what he loves doing best, playing with his pet fishes, painting or just daydreaming. He withdraws into a shell, refusing to smile or to talk to anybody. It is then that a new arts teacher, Ram Shankar Nikumbh (Khan), enters the school, understands Ishaan’s problem and gradually gets him to reconnect with his surroundings. The end is disappointingly predictable, but Khan manages to convey the boy’s trauma with wonderful sensitivity, telling the story by imaginatively using animation and music.

Khan keeps the narrative and the camera focused on Ishaan. In fact, the director first appears midway in the movie, and is admirably low-keyed throughout, letting his compassion for Ishaan turn into real affection. Acting honors clearly belong to Safary, who is brilliant. Completely misunderstood, he portrays the frustration of a child who cannot understand why the alphabets in his book dance or why his teachers and parents are so unfeeling. In stark contrast, we see him rejoice in his small private space with the joys of color. An avid painter, he creates a world where numbers and letters have little meaning.

Despite great performances, the movie suffers from a weak script. In this day and age, that teachers in the two reputed, upmarket schools that Ishaan attends are not aware of his disability lacks credibility. Worse, the teachers are made out to be monsters since Khan and writer Amole Gupte want to show the contrasting attitude of the new arts master. Such exaggerations mar what could have been an even greater work.

Review : Taare Zameen Par

Aamir khan's directorial flick rekindles the uncomfortable moments of our childhood, writes khalid mohamed..

Taare Zameen Par Cast : Darsheel Safary, Aamir Khan Direction : Aamir Khan Rating : * * * *

HT Image

He’s special. Mixing poster paint colours, grinning at gutter fish and ignoring the breakfast idli dish, the eight-year-old boy’s life is an endless wish.

That’s Ishaan, the super-taara of Taare Zameen Par . Here, then, is the first go at direction by Aamir Khan – with acknowledged help from writer-and-‘creative director’ Amole Gupte. Gentlemen, do take a bow.

Indeed, they buck the easy-cash formula by tiptoeing into the mind of a child who is harangued as a duffer. He can’t handle arithmetic, tears up a red-inked report card and bunks class. Does that strike a chord?

Absolutely. All of us have been guilty of such trespasses is some degree or the other. Khan rekindles those uncomfortable moments of our childhood but reassures us that hey, it’s quite okay to be out-of-the-box.

Pulled out of his internal wonder world, Ishaan (Darsheel Safary) is banished to a boarding school -- the ultimate sign of parental rejection. Isolated, the boy goes into a suicidal shell. Hell! Mercifully at intermission point, an angelic art teacher (Aamir Khan) whooshes in. The teacher recognises symptoms of dyslexia and strikes the kind of emotional contact with the child that you thought was lost at the movies. And your tears flow.

Yup, Taare.. is a weepie and not ashamed of it. Several terrific scenes stay with us. Like the teacher treating a tiny canteen boy to tea, the bargaining session with the school principal to allow the child one more chance before expulsion. And the finale’s painting competition.

But drat. Quite hideously, the teaching staff is portrayed as Hitler-like caricatures. One of the gargoyles has more hair on his ears than Rapunzel had on her head, a roll-calling Miss is a shrieking banshee, and a dorm warden gloats, “We have tamed wilder horses here.” Please. In fact, we worry that the teaching community could protest against its grotesque portrayal.

Also, Ishaan’s scowl-scowl dad is a virtual Mogambo. Inexplicably, he walks away from an opportunity to redeem himself – just by giving the boy a Munnabhai-like jhappi . Plus, a cartoon interlude drags. And what about a Lady Jabeen who hangs around Teacher saab? Honestly, woh kaun thi?

And yoww, what about that cliched cheesy stock shot of a bird feeding its babies? Technically, the look and the shot takings are humdrum. The editing (teacher waits for bus, gets into bus, feels warm about mum-‘n’-kid in bus) slackens the daunting length of 18 reels.

The dialogue shuttles between the simple and the stridently sanctimonious. As for the music score, it’s remarkable essentially for the moving Maa and Mera jahaan composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and excellently written by Prasoon Joshi. Of the cast, it’s a treat to see Aamir Khan assigning himself second spot to the film’s edifying thematic concerns (tackled only occasionally as in the American TV feature Backwards: Riddle of Dyslexia , 1984). His presence, both in front and behind the camera, has a log fire warmth. Tisca Chopra as the harried, egg-frying mom, is correctly restrained.

Above all, the amazingly confident child actor Darsheel Safary is the li’l big champion here.

A must-experience for sensitive viewers. And do stick on for the end credit titles, showing documentary footage of children with smiles and tears as real as yours..and mine.

Tare Zameen Par

wogma rating: Owner's Pride! ( ? )

Classy and charming. Composed and elegant. Aamir Khan delivers his first baby with élan. The hard labor shows in a compassionate portrayal of a sensitive issue.

How can one not love a movie about children crafted with utmost compassion - children with special needs at that? But, is that the only reason I liked Tare Zameen Par ? Maybe - maybe not. What I know for sure is that a strong one-line story is narrated extremely charmingly. It is truly uplifting when spirit wins and yet , it is not all about the spirit of winning.

Tare Zameer Par is about a child who suffers because no one around him recognizes that he is a slow learner. The beauty of the narration is that the message applies to all children - learning disability or not. How can creativity not deserve a place in academics? It also points a very subtle finger at how we build conformation in our system right at the roots.

The pace of the first half gives you time to think of normal children who are just not academically inclined. The resolution in the second half, however, comes by too quickly compared to the trauma shown earlier. But, I guess, if the point is to show that difficulties can be overcome, you don't necessarily want to show how difficult it is to overcome them.

About 45 minutes post-interval, Darsheel Safary (Ishaan) said a line which made me realize that he hadn't said a line in the last hour or so. There I was feeling sorry for Ishaan, feeling like yelling at someone to give him a big hug while I fought this lump in my throat that had been there for the longest time. All this based solely on Darsheel's expressions and body language!

Kudos to the director for taking this decision and many such with brilliant confidence. And, finally we have a dialogue writer who knows when not to give the actors a helping hand. There are a couple of verbose, preachy scenes. But, they made the point because they were well written.

Aamir Khan's entry into the movie seemed over-the-top and forced, mainly because it was in absolute contrast with the tone of the movie thus far. But after a little while you realize that you can't distinguish between the actor/director Aamir Khan and his character Nikhumb. They are both fighting the same cause. Passionately. The other characters serve their purpose as caricatures - stereotypical father, loving mother, understanding sibling, ruthless teacher, and jeering peers.

No matter who or what the focus of the camera is, the love it feels towards its subjects shows in each frame. And, in turn, you fall in love with what you see on screen. Compositions, lighting, angles, colors all work successfully together to engross you and very often to enchant you. The lingering camera might have added a good 10-15 minutes to the run-time. But you will be hard-pressed to point out exact scenes which the movie could have done without. Everything is building character or atmosphere or both.

The songs too contribute to the narrative. The lyrics are sheer poetry. I know-I know, that's what they are supposed to be, but can't remember the last time lyrics brought me to tears. "mein kabhi batlaata nahi" kept me speechless (and we all know how difficult that is!). And rock-style guitar strumming to a kids' song - that's what I call creative.

Yes, that dash of seemingly inevitable melodrama exists. The side-characters transform for no apparent reason. The climax is exaggerated and is as unrealistic as it could get. However, the aim is to show not reality of life but reality of the condition that this child suffers from. Once you get that, you pardon the make-up a mother is wearing at 6 AM while doing her chores. And anyway, most of this is towards the end, by which time you are willing to forgive. Because, above all else, it makes you think.

When did we grow up? When along the way did we forget what it felt like to be yelled at, to be put down, to be ridiculed? And why did we choose the next generation for revenge? Will we recognize the child in us that is struggling to get out? Will the sensation that the lump in the throat created, stay after the credits roll?

Plot Summary

Ishaan Awasthi (Darsheel Safary) is a dyslexic, but no one around him knows that. Ram Nikhumb (Aamir Khan) puts his faith in Ishaan and helps him work on his weaknesses and enhance his strengths.

What Worked

  • The gutter scene in the beginning, beautifully shot!
  • Titles - adorable!
  • The manner in which the street vendors were captured in the sequence where Ishaan is roaming on the streets.
  • The shudder Darsheel gives when the car starts (at the hostel).
  • The way Ishaan's character has developed. You know he is the kind who would hate showing his tears in public and thus refrains from crying when he is hit on his knuckles.
  • Portrayal of how color is sucked out of Ishaan, a child whose only true love is colors.
  • The scenes in which Ishaan is shown gazing at the scenery - a breathtaking composition.

What did not

  • How can a school which boasts of discipline allow a parent to interrupt class?
  • The principal of the school did not look stern enough to be such a stickler for discipline.
  • How come Ishaan became such a sudden favorite at school that he got a standing ovation?

Nitty-Gritty

  • Teachers announcing marks of 60 children in front of the whole class, as if she was taking a roll call. Where does that happen? Marks usually are kept secret. And even if marks are announced they are just of the highest and the lowest scorers.
  • Ishaan wears a uniform that is two sizes bigger than what he needs. Again, superficial things purposefully used to exaggerate situation and evoke empathy.
  • Where did Ishaan get money to buy the gola (ice-candy) and take a bus ride? He used his school bus to go home, why would a third grader have money?

Taare Zameen par was a heart touching movie. It is brillantly directed and the movie is as perfect as Aamir Khan. i like Tare Zameen Par a nice flim,no words to tell about it a good story good direction .i am an fan of Aamir Khan.

this movie was in my heart and it is still there. In the modern world we have a lot of problems to accept each other for who and what they are. We need develop then skills. Because only then can we live peacefully

The movie was very an inspirational. Every scene tuoched and soften my heart that i cried hard enough to heaven. the connotes a hearstring and awaken the minds of the teachers who cant understand the individual dirrences. i really love the movie, is best movie i ever seen.I felt so much better after watching the movie. The movie which a child may or may not understand but one which every parent/teacher should watch to understand their child. i recommend this movie to all, spicially the teachers.

I have seen many hindi movies about the plight of children Mother India was the most powerful, this particular movie has delivered strong messages about the misfortunes and suffering of childern was again. Aamir Khan is an actor whom I rate very highly as his ability to adapt into character and carry the strong screen prescence is unprecendented amongst the modern Indian film stars. He is definitely one of my favourites his apperance in Lagaan was top notch. http://www.vimax-review.com/ http://www.vimax-review.com/do-vimax-pills-work http://www.vimax-review.com/vimax-free-trial http://www.vimax-review.com/vimax-video-testimonial

Sad that i missed this movie to watch on 2007. But got a chance to see this movie yesterday. WAS absolutely went to tears after seeing the movie, especially the scene where Ishan got first prize and runs and hug amir khan with lot of tears in his eyes was very touching. A good message for all parents and teachers. As amir khan says to boy parents just look after him, its a beautiful message for each and every parent.

Thanks amir khan for a master piece

heart touching movie..jst luv it...beautiful message...

Now this one is the pride of my DVD shelf (cupboard). Every time I watch it i get the goosebumps and the eyes flood. Rewatched it yesterday by chance. Was just swapping channels and hit upon Zee Cinema which was airing the film.

A gem of a film. Reminds me each time that I am human and that childhood must be a carefree age to do and go where the imaginative mind takes you.

its a beautiful movie which gives you mixed emotions.

Best movie I ever see in my life. Besides entertainment, there are also many things to learn from Taare Zameen Par . A must watch!

one of the best movies i have came across, heart touching with a good amount of emotional vision

Taare Zameen Par Reviews

Rajeev Masand

The film's success is the result of both Amole Gupte's tremendous script, and Aamir Khan's nurturing supervision. Neither could have achieved this without the other. Be prepared to shed tears, not because it's always a sad story, but because it's such an overwhelming experience.

Raja Sen

Taare Zameen Par is, above all else, an earnest film. Aamir brings us the debut of both a great child actor and a budding director with a fine eye, though he seems slightly Ashutosh'd in terms of pace. Economy is the one thing this film cries out for. Crisper, tighter, and less repetitive, and we'd have a very good movie on our hands. For now, we have a director with clear potential for solid work. And we need as many of those as we can get.

Nikhat Kazmi

We recommend a mandatory viewing for all schools and all parents.

Taran Adarsh

TAARE ZAMEEN PAR is an outstanding work of cinema. To miss it would be sacrilege. It has everything it takes to win awards and box-office rewards! Do yourselves a favor. Watch TAARE ZAMEEN PAR with your child. It will change your world. It will also change the way you look at your kids!

Martin D'Souza

I strongly suggest that every school make it an exception to take bus loads of their school children along with all support staff to view this movie. It is a must-watch. Also, it will be good if it is made Tax Free, that way it will reach to an even wider audience.

IndiaGlitz

While the climax of Lagaan was set in a cricket match, here it is in an art competition, but the effect is as rivetting and cheering. Ishaan, the underdog, the boy who is a 'disgrace' to his parents, school and orthodox teachers with his blunders, low marks and aggressive behaviour blooms into the hero of the day, all because of the farsighted and motivated Nikumbh 'Sir' who waters this human plant with compassion, sympathy and affection instead of pouring reprimands, beatings, criticisms and ridicule on him!

Sonia Chopra

Taare Zameen Par is an outstanding work of cinema. To miss it would be sacrilege. It has everything it takes to win awards and box-office rewards!Do yourselves a favour. Watch Taare Zameen Par with your child. It will change your world. It will also change the way you look at your kids!

Classy and charming. Composed and elegant. Aamir Khan delivers his first baby with élan. The hard labor shows in a compassionate portrayal of a sensitive issue.

Audience Reviews for Taare Zameen Par

Shashwat Sisodia

'Taare Zameen Par', take in word, is the best Hindi film you will see in 2007. It is the most pleasant experience in cinemas till now this decade. No other film made me more emotional this year. This full-of-life and a slice-of-life film will change your life and spark a conversation, which is a little too obvious, but what works more is the performance of Darsheel Safari as an imperfect child, as does the performance of Aamir Khan who breathes life into the role of constantly moving teacher. But what is more that the film is also but a celebration of this template in Bollywood. You never often get that. Amol Gupte creates a heartfelt film which gets better with each and every frame.

Movie Review: ‘Taare Zameen Par’ - Amalgamation of Parental Expectations and Personal Disappointments

film review writing taare zameen par

It is an amalgamation of parental expectations and personal disappointments.

Cast and Introduction

‘Taare Zameen Par’ is arguably a gem and a movie that will bring tears to our eyes at some point, but leave us with a smile. It has a beautiful cast of talented actors- Aamir khan playing the role of Nikumb, Darsheel Safari essaying the role of Ishaan as leads.

The movie shows the sad reality of the education system and the prejudice associated with parents.

Plot ( Spoiler Alert! )

The movie shows the struggle of an eight year old boy Ishaan Awasthi who is suffering from Dyslexia. He finds all the subjects difficult, scares badly and is disliked by his teachers, family and friends. He has a great talent of imagination, creativity and art and painting which are often disregarded.

The part when he bunks school to hit the road on an adventurous spree just to enjoy and explore he observes everything. Tries to understand and grasp the world through his eyes and experience.

When he paints a Gola the different colors infused and its beauty within it makes even that stand out. Reflecting how talented and gifted he is except for the fact that his family refuses to see this and understand his artistic side.

In the movie Ishaan has an elder brother. He is shown as a Utopian child he is good in academics, he is shown passionate towards extracurricular for his passion towards tennis. Ishaan is compared and expected to behave like his brother.

Ishaan’s internal world is full of imaginations and magical colors that nobody is able to see as they follow the dogmatic education system where grades decide one’s capabilities.

The Theme of Depression

Ishaan’s parents send him to a boarding school. Alone he rapidly sinks into a state of fear, anxiety and depression. His only friend is Rajan, a physically disabled boy, who is one of the top students. The boarding school teachers are even more abusive than his old school. Ishaan contemplates suicide but Rajan saves him.

Ishaan is saved and his condition improves when a new cheerful and optimistic art teacher, Nikumb comes to his school. Nikumb’s teaching style is remarkably different from that of his strict and abusive predecessors and he quickly notes that Ishaan’s unhappiness, reviews Ishaan’s work and concludes that his academic shortcomings are indicative of dyslexia.

“Duniya main aise aise heera paida huye hain, jinhone saari duniya ka naksha hi badal diya … kyunki vo duniya ko apni alag nazar se dekh paaye”

- Ram Shankar Nikumb

He visits Ishaan’s parents where he is surprised to discover Ishaan’s hidden talent is art. He demonstrates to Ishaan's parents that  Ishaan has extreme difficulty in understanding letters and words due to dyslexia. Nandkishore labels it as mental retardation and dismisses it as laziness. Frustrated by Ishaan’s father, Nikumb leaves.

Later his father realises and accepts Ishaan’s situation. His father meets Nikumb and earlier refuses to accept that Ishaan has a problem and instead believes that he is an ideal parent. He believed that only through strictness they could mold children.

To which Nikumb makes him realize the practice where in Solomon Islands the tribals do not cut the tree instead they curse it. They form a circle and abuse it eventually it dies on its own.

Depicting that only scoldings and finding faults in him will not make him better. Instead the encouragement and support to children is needed.

Societal Pressure and Toxicity in Surroundings

It also depicts society's inability to accept mental health in a positive way. At school Nikumb brings up the topic of Dyslexia by offering him a list of famous people who were dyslexic. He comforts Ishaan by telling him how he struggled as a child as well.

Nikumb obtains the principal’s permission to become Ishaan’s tutor. With gradual care, proper ways and methods he attempts to improve Ishaan’s reading and writing by using remedial techniques developed by Dyslexia specialists. Eventually resulting in improvement in Ishaan’s grades.

At the end of the school year Nikumb organises an art and craft contest for the staff and students judged by Artist Lalita Lajmi. Ishaan with his strikingly creative style is declared the winner and Nikumb who paints Ishaan’s portrait is declared the runner up.

When Ishaan’s parents meet his teachers on the last day of school they are left speechless by the transformation in him. Overcome the emotion Nandkishore thanks Nikumb.

“Tu dhoop hai cham se bikhar

Tu hai nadi o bekhabar

Beh chal kahin

Ud chal kahin”

The Bottom Line

This movie teaches us that -

“Har bacche ki apni khoobi hoti hai, apni kaabiliyat hoti hai, apni chahat hoti hai”

My rating for the movie - 5/5

Movie Review: Taare Zameen Par

film review writing taare zameen par

CHECKLIST Rating: 5/5

Reviewer: Eloni, BA 2 nd Semester, Tetso College

The movie “Tare Zameen Par” is about an 8 year old boy Ishaan Awasthi who suffers from ‘dyslexia’, a learning disability. It is an attempt to understand the psychology behind the non-acceptance of such special children in the society by their parents, teachers, friends and others.

The movie displays the difficulties and struggles of a disabled and slow learner. Ishaan has strong imagination and his mind is full of different creative scenarios. He likes drawing and painting. He dislikes schools and fails every test and exams. He finds it difficult to understand and comprehend the subjects and is often insulted and belittled by his classmates and teachers.

film review writing taare zameen par

When complaints start to pour about his failures to his parents, his parents decide to send him off to a boarding school. It also showcases the roles and the difficulties faced by teachers, parents and friends in the development and understanding of a disabled. His life at the boarding school is no different; he feels rejected and dejected unable to cope up with his inabilities and the insults thrown at him.

Ram Shankar Nikumbh is appointed as a temporary art teacher at Ishaan’s school. Unlike other teachers Ram makes the student think outside of box and use their imagination and creativity. Ram notices that Ishaan was different and he then takes effort in understanding Ishaan. He makes Ishaan’s parents and teachers understand that he is not abnormal but a special child with talents of his own. Ram helps Ishaan overcome his problems and difficulties and boost his confidence level.

This movie is an example of the harsh realities of the world we live in. It reflects parental negligence which results in isolation and seclusion of the child. It conveys the message that every child is special in their own way and that we should not neglect them just because they are academically weak. It teaches us a human being to try to understand the disabled children better and help them grow.
