Please don't book any flight via booking.com because you will regret it. I tried booking through them and their confirmation email doesn't come with standard details about the flight and customer service is not helpful either.

PLEASE DO NOT USE THIS FLIGHTS SERVICE !!!!

I've using services for many travel agencies over the years but never thought booking.com flights would turn in to be worst of it. They will change your flights automatically without your consent plus they will extend your transit waiting period from one hour to 12 hour. No new flight or compensation will be offered. Customer service will also hang up on you. PLEASE DO NOT USE THIS FLIGHTS SERVICE !!!!

Beware of the "flexible" airline…

Beware of the "flexible" airline tickets that Booking.com offers. They do not work in reality and are apparently simply a divice to scam people who made the grave mistake of booking a flight with Booking.com. This is an absolutely terrible company - completely unreliable and dishonest. Stay away from them!

Never will I book a flight with…

Never will I book a flight with booking.com again. I chose the flexible option in case I need to change or cancel and guess what I can only make changes to the same route,& cannot cancel or make name changes. All I wanted to do was change the departure airport but to the same destination on the same day in Vietnam but the flexible option doesn’t include this even if it is a cheaper ticket fare. Disgusting level of service. I usually always book direct with the airlines & have learnt a very hard lesson this time.

Avoid !!! my flight was canceled booking.com said talk to the airline and the airline said to booking.com . Tragic !!!now I must wait if take my money back ..,.

Booking.com nightmare

We booked a one-way flight from Basel, Switzerland to Tucson, AZ. Five days later when we tried to check in, we went through hours of being on hold, being passed from one number to another before being told that we couldn’t check in because our tickets were “on hold.” After another hour of being put on hold, we were finally told that the only way we could get the flight we booked for 1400Euros was to pay 795 Euros more. We asked if we could cancel, get a refund and rebook for a later flight. That would cost us $600. Either way, we’re screwed and the major part of our last day in Basel was spent on the phone and laptop. What a waste of precious time. We’ve had good luck with Booking.com with hotels, but disaster with this flight.

It is a really lousy system for flights especially if you want to change - you have to call and it is super expensive and they have call centres in countries who have no idea about customer service - I think it was Africa and they woman was counselling me and also telling me it’s was not her fault etc when I complained about how long it was taking.. poor service and do not use them for flights.. only for hotels

Baits with a low price and then increases it !!

Booking.com places a bait price on various websites. When you proceed to pay for it, it asks to provide all your personal details including name, date of birth, bank details and after our bank approves the payment, that's when it plays up by giving a message. "Price increased... accept the new price?" A new way of stealing you of your hard earned money and waste your time. How can prices increase in a few minutes of filling the details? Why would you pay extra when you have committed to a price you can afford ? Moreover, when you go back to the website, it displays same low price ! The customer service is also not helpful in anyway. Keep away from this site and save your money and time !!

Customer service of booking.com for flights is non-existing

Two days ago, on my return trip from Mexico City to Geneva we missed the connecting flight at the airport in Rome as the layover time was only 1 hour (it had been 1h15 minutes when I booked the flights but there was a change a few weeks before where the ITA flight was advanced by 15 minutes). Our luggage did not make it in time either and therefore ITA did not wait for us and closed the doors a few minutes before we arrived at the gate. ITA told us that they could not do anything as the flight was not booked with them (even if we needed to register with them for recuperating our tickets) and booking.com, by chat was telling us they could not help us either. This meant we had to purchase a flight back to Geneva (costing almost 1200 Euros) which was with Easyjet…that’s the only flight we could get departing that day. I’ve sent numerous emails to Booking.com customer service but they’re absolutely no help whatsoever. They are saying "We do not interfere and have no influence on airline schedules and airport technical issues. As your travel agency, we must follow the airline's rules and policies for your tickets. Please contact the airline". I have also contacted Gotogate and I am waiting for their answer. *Conclusion* DO NOT USE BOOKING.COM FOR FLIGHTS! If anything goes wrong you will find it impossible to get constructive help from their Customer Services.

Don't use for flights

I've had no problem with hotel bookings but I advise never use for flights. I booked two tickets 7 hours ago and still have not received 'confirmation from the airline'. I can see on the sidelines website those seats are no longer available, others are going fast - I don't know if I've got them or not. I didn't go direct because the airline company website was down last night. Booking.com won't cancel and refund the order until 12 hours have passed, at which point it's automatically cancelled.

Cancelled flight

Booking.com failed to notify me of my flight changed. Not only did the time change but also the date. I didn't receive any email or notifications regarding this and I missed my flight. Booking.com passed me over to GotoGate and they also did nothing. I will never use these again. Stay clear of Booking.com for flights

Worst Traveling agency

it's been one month I made the cancelation of my flight booking. I haven't received my refund till today. I have contacted customer service so many times. I have contacted the airline Qatar airways as well. They informed me that they had proceeded the refund. Booking. Com is making excuses and not returning my money. This the the worst traveling agency I used for the long flight Booking. Very very disappointed. Please never ever use this agency. Totally Rubbish. Robbers.

It has been six months since I requested the cancellation of my flight booking, yet I have not received my refund. Despite numerous attempts to resolve the issue with both Booking.com and Sun Express, I continue to face delays and excuses. This experience has been incredibly frustrating and disappointing. I strongly advise against using Booking.com for long flight bookings. Their lack of accountability and failure to provide a refund is unacceptable. Please beware and avoid this agency at all costs.

BE WARNED-booked with booking.com…

BE WARNED-booked with booking.com flights then after payment referred to their intermediary Go to Gate. 2 months later received email that airline had cancelled therefore requested refund on the 17.1.24. Go gate unhelpful and now saying they can only refund when the airline pays them back and no GUARANTEE. SCAM DO NOT BOOK EVER WITH BOOKING.COM OR GOTOGATE

DON'T USE BOOKING.COM FOR FLIGHTS

DON'T USE BOOKING.COM FOR FLIGHTS. Their systems don't work properly with the airline systems. Calling up and making simple requests like changing flights or adding cabin baggage become week long ordeals. Just buy flights direct or use Skyscanner

Booking is just a puppet

I purchased a flight from Qatar through booking. Qatar illegally denied me boarding due a visa issue and refused me a refund. Booking washed their hands of the problem, saying they are just an intermediary. Apparently, one without any power. Utterly worthless.

Horrible customer service! Don’t use

Horrible customer service. I booked a hotel and never got a confirmation email. They charged my credit card immediately. Have sent 12 emails and two phone calls and no help. Nobody will talk to me without my confirmation # . The whole reason I’m calling them is because I don’t have a confirmation. Basically, they stole my money!!

Excellent Service. Thank you!

With so many poor reviews of Booking.com, I thought it only fair to list my recent experience with this company. I booked flights for two people for May 2024 flying from Honolulu to Calgary and then to Heathrow. The cost was £1100. Unfortunately, my travelling companion was unable to secure travel insurance due to a long term illness and we thought it too risky to enter the US without it. So in February 2024 I cancelled the flights on the Booking.com website. It told me immediately the refund that I would receive and I received at email a few days later informing me that the funds had been repaid to my account. When I checked my account I had actually received more than the original estimate. A charge of approximately £50 per person having been deducted. I was very pleased with the efficiency of the service received and at the modest handling charges. Well done Booking.com and thank you!

Date of experience : February 06, 2024

Terrible, I had my flight cancelled by Citilink and changed to a time that was no longer convenient to me. I contacted the airline and asked for a flight refund and was told I must contact the travel agent. I did not expect I would be on the phone for the best part of two hours back and forth between both the airline and booking.com who kept saying “contact the airline” and “contact the travel agent”. It looks at this stage that the flight in question which is two days away will not be getting refunded and I will be out of pocket. Booking.Com are a bunch of robbing thieves. I expected so much better…

Date of experience : March 24, 2024

Keep your fingers crossed you never have to contact Customer Services!

Recently, on my return trip on Singapore Airlines from Auckland to Manchester the connecting flight at Singapore airport was not available. This meant I had to purchase a flight back to the UK (costing almost £600) which was with Finnair via Helsinki to Manchester…that’s the cheapest flight I could get departing that day. I’ve sent numerous emails to Booking.com customer service but they’re absolutely no help whatsoever, infact, at the beginning they even claimed they couldn’t find my booking, despite me forwarding the original confirmation email I was sent from them! Several weeks after my return I’m still trying to get a satisfactory answer from Booking.com or Singapore Airlines as to what went wrong and how I can claim back the cost I incurred for the flight home. *Conclusion* DO NOT USE BOOKING.COM FOR LONG HAUL FLIGHTS…or any flight for that matter! If anything goes wrong you will find it impossible to get constructive help from their Customer Services.

Is Booking.com Reliable For Flights? (Updated 2023)

Avatar

Online travel agencies like Booking.com offer a one-stop shopping experience for hotels, rental cars, taxis, flights, and excursions.

Booking.com is available in multiple languages and currencies, making it easy to find discounted rates on travel-related reservations worldwide.

As one of the world’s largest online travel agencies, Booking.com provides travelers with a reliable service for making domestic and international flight reservations. However, flights listed on Booking.com are provided through a third-party site. This means Booking relies on its partners for routes, pricing, and resolving customer complaints.

This article explains how Booking.com works for flights and offers some tips for making Booking an easy and reliable way to travel.

How Does Booking.com Work for Flights?

Close-up shot of Booking.com website on a screen.

When it comes to flights, Booking.com is actually just a listing service , providing a place to search and reserve flights offered by their third-party partners.

If you arrange a flight using Booking.com, you will receive a plane ticket – it’s not a scam – but Booking is only the middleman between the customer and a third-party aggregator.

Flight aggregators (such as GoToGate, Kiwi, JustFly, etc.) compile routes and prices, then act as the intermediary between the client and the airline.

Booking.com has various partnerships with third parties and earns a commission from each flight purchased through its website.

  • Are Flights Cheaper on Booking.com?

Flights are not always cheaper on Booking.com.

Often, customers can find the flight they want at a lower price when reserving directly with the airline or the third-party site.

However, Booking.com can offer discounts on trip packages when travelers book their flights, hotels, excursions, and/or car rentals together.

  • Pros and Cons of Using Booking.com for Flights

An advantage to using Booking.com for flights is that their site is a one-stop shop for all things travel-related.

You can book your plane tickets, accommodations, car rental, and activities in one place and be assured you’ll get what you pay for.

Booking.com also offers a large selection of flights, and their booking process is easy and straightforward.

They tend to offer two types of tickets: standard and flexible.

Standard tickets are for travelers confident in their travel plans and cannot be changed without penalty.

Flexible tickets are slightly more expensive and can be changed (within the same airline) up to 24 hours prior to departure for only the difference in fare.

That said, Booking may not always list the most up-to-date flight routes or pricing, nor will they have access to all available flights to any given destination (the third-party sites or the airlines themselves may have different options available).

Also, customers are limited in what they can do at the time of booking.

For example, many airlines offer discounted rates on checked luggage if selected ahead of time – which may not be possible on all Booking.com flights.

Moreover, flights reserved through Booking.com can be problematic if there are any issues, including missed flights.

Because Booking is just the interface between the customer and the third party, if a problem arises, they can’t do much to help.

  • Should You Book Flights Through Booking.com?

An old man using Booking.com on a laptop.

While Booking.com provides customers with a comprehensive travel interface to design the perfect vacation, they aren’t always the best option, especially when making flight reservations.

Reserving directly through an airline’s website provides travelers with the best protection if any problems occur, especially if the flight route is complicated or you aren’t 100% sure of your travel plans.

That said, many customers use Booking.com to find flights, accommodations, and activities because the website is easy to navigate and they have a good reputation.

If your flight is simple and Booking has the best price, you should be absolutely fine to reserve with them – you will get what you paid for.

Remember, whether using Booking.com, a third-party aggregator, or even the airline website, read the fine print before reserving a flight to avoid surprises.

Booking.com provides a reliable platform to book an entire vacation, including accommodation, activities, and transportation – and often offers discounts when booking these things together.

They have an excellent website interface that makes it easy to find domestic and international flights; however, there are some things to keep in mind before using Booking.com for plane tickets.

Booking.com is a middleman between customers and third-party flight aggregators.

This means they may not have access to the best price or route to a given destination and aren’t responsible for any flights reserved on their site.

While customers can trust that Booking.com is selling them the flight they want, if any issues come up, resolving them can be difficult.

Often it’s better to book flights directly with an airline; however, if Booking has a flight you want at a reduced price – and your travel plans are guaranteed not to change – you’re likely good to go.

Always read the terms and conditions of any flight reservation so you know what’s included and who to contact if something goes wrong.

Like most everybody else I use skyscanner to find the best price/route option for my journey

But I'm currently looking at direct flights to Seoul with Asiana Airlines where the airline web site want to charge me £150 more than the OTAs are offering, one of which is Booking.com.

Normally I wouldn't even consider booking with one of the OTAs (cos they have form for mailing you a week later telling you that the special price that you thought you had booked isn't actually available and you now have to cough up an extra £200). But I trust Booking.com - for ***hotels***

can I extend that trust to flight bookings?

20 replies to this topic

reviews for booking com flights

Read their terms etc and weigh up the risks vs potential savings. I would do it to save money and if I was confident my plans were not going to change etc etc.

Having said this, hotel booking trust does not extend to flight booking trust.

reviews for booking com flights

"want to charge me £150 more than the OTAs are offering"

"Normally I wouldn't even consider booking with one of the OTAs" Why would you then now?

Even if this is not a bait and switch, there are a couple of things to remember:

1.) Do you compare like for like, incl. but not limited to fare rules and what is included and what not?

2.) Do you want a middle-man between you and the airline ? This can cause issues.

3.) Did you read through the additional T&C's and fully understand the risks?

You might save GBP 150, but you also might lose a lot of money. It is risk vs. reward and of course you need to be able to absorb the loss, should the risk come through. Can you?

It is all relative. You will be dealing with Gotogate, not booking.com. I have no issues with hotel bookings through Booking.com, but I would be reluctant to use Gotogate having observed some of the complaints in this forum.

At the end, it is your gamble.

reviews for booking com flights

It was how I found out they had started selling flights actually.

If you normally book direct with the airline , as most of us do here, then I would carry on doing so

Just my opinion, up to you

But you have found a cheaper fare, so that is when a booking through an OTA can be considered esp if it is a direct flight or a thru connection (not a self transfer).

They use same technology as the airline websites, the booking path is the same, if you book and do not attempt to change the reservation or cancel then expect a refund, the chances of the booking going awry is very low. in other words. any booking made with an OTA should be considered final, no changes, no refunds and no customer service.

And take the complaints in context, most are to do with changes and refunds or self transfer bookings. Because a complaint has been made, it does not mean it is valid. And no one writes a post to say they booked with G2G and it was all fine.

Have not read a complaint lately that there was no booking when they got to the airport or eticket not honoured or other such issues. Its almost always a mismatch between the travellers expectations vs the reality of what they chose to book. And look at the number of transactions G2G generate vs the number of complaints.

And no, they don't have form for emailing you a week later saying the price has gone up. That is just something you read somewhere, probably here which made it sound like it is the norm. Its the exception.

If you've found a good fare thru them, its likely some sort of promotional fare or deal in conjunction with Asiana, there isn't a good reason why you should not book, as long as you understand the booking conditions, fare rules and your expectations are realistic.

But you should book where you feel comfortable doing so.

Hi tim_London. If you have to ask, I suspect you aren't totally comfortable with the idea of booking through Booking.com which does indeed mean you'd be using G2G.

Bear in mind that the majority of justified complaints seem to involve customer service and refunds. This boils down to if you need them to do anything, including processing a refund or amending a booking, you will probably have to pay for it. And you can also expect a struggle to communicate with them.

All that is quite enough to put me off, but what matters is what you think.

Tripadvisor staff removed this post at the original author's request.

I take the view:

If I need to cancel for an extraordinary reason, I will claim on my insurance or just suck it up.

If, theoretically, I find that I don't need the flight because the tour operator cancels the tour I am on, I will just go anyway and make the best of a diy holiday.

The risk here is simply the one that I described earlier. And it's not totally theoretical. SS is not always up to date, I do see it suggesting prices that when you got to book, aren't available.

And now you've told me it's actually a company that I have never heard of, who on searching don't have a good rep, I think I shall take your advice and pass.

Worse case here is that I'm going to be on one of the indirect flights , the prices for which seem much more stable than for Asiana

A Leading Vacation Rental Site Catches Up With the Times—But How Does It Stack Up?

Gone are the days when travel involved an appointment with a travel agent, a professional travel booker who held the keys to the mystery of airline reservations, hotels, car reservations, package deals, and attractions. The internet has changed travel planning in many ways. First, travel is more common, more frequent, and the internet allows travelers to make last-minute decisions in just a few clicks. It also gives travelers the option of doing their own research, looking at photos of destination properties and services, reading user reviews, and changing or adjusting their schedules as necessary. This is convenient, but for many years this style of travel planning shifted a lot of weight onto the travelers to read between the lines on hotel sites, cross their fingers that the car rental company they picked was reputable, and navigate sometimes-complex rules and conditions of airline reservation services. The advent of travel planning sites, where many of these features are combined on one website that connects all of the pieces of travel planning, research, and booking together, has simplified the process of planning a business trip or a getaway.

Booking.com is one of the most comprehensive travel booking sites in the market. Its offerings are vast, and the interface makes it simple for both inexperienced travelers and seasoned jetsetters to make their travel arrangements without the hassle of navigating multiple sites and coordinating payments across multiple platforms. I approached this Booking.com review through the lens of a customer and evaluated the customer’s journey in using the site.

Our Verdict: Booking.com claims to offer a complete suite of travel research and service reservations, and with a few minor exceptions, this proved to be the case. “Bookers,” as the site refers to its customers, can feel confident that the resources they need can be easily found and that Booking.com will genuinely offer the one-stop-shopping experience it promises.

Booking.com Review: Claims

Booking.com began as a small start-up in Amsterdam in 1996. Since then, it has expanded to include more than 28 million accommodation listings, transportation, and travel experiences. The company’s stated mission is to “make it easier for everyone to experience the world.”

Branding itself as a source of savings and discounts, connections with travelers who have similar interests, package deals, and inspirations, Booking.com promises quite a lot. The home page also provides myriad ways to enter the site, with a stripe of category offerings, a quick-start option to jump right in by specifying the destination and basic travel deals, searches by region and property type, and links to lists of can’t-miss destinations for travelers who know they want a vacation, but don’t know where.

What You Can Book on Booking.com

Booking.com offers access to almost everything except the kitchen sink—and travelers can probably book one of those, as well, if they choose the right property. Categories include flights, hotels, “stays” (rentals of privately owned apartments, homes, cabins, and cottages), car rentals, and every combination of these options. In addition, there are options to reserve airport taxis and tickets or passes to museums, shows, and attractions at the destination.

Flight options include all of the major airlines and quite a few smaller or regional airlines, and these can be sorted by airline, number of stops, duration, and a range of departure and arrival times. The flight results are sorted into groups titled “Best,” “Cheapest,” and “Fastest” so travelers can customize their flight choices.

Lodging options feature a similar search window including check-in and check-out days, location with neighborhood-specific choices, the number of guests, and the number of rooms requested. As with the flight search, there’s a range of filters available to help customers tailor the search to their needs. Filter examples include budget, amenities, distance to attractions, sustainability, health and safety protocols, accessibility, and both site-assigned star ratings and customer review ratings.

The rental car reservation system carries over the travel dates from the flight and hotel reservations if the customer has entered them. Customers can select their preferred car rental company and size of the car, and filter by cost, mileage, and transmission type. Reviews and star ratings of the companies are included in the search results, as are specifics of the payment policies and cancellation policies. Once customers have selected a car, Booking.com breaks down the cost of the rental, separating out the cost of the rental itself and various taxes and fees. Customers are offered the opportunity to choose or decline additional insurance coverage as well.

Booking.com’s Airport Taxi reservation system connects users with local taxi drivers to avoid a long delay waiting in line after a flight. According to the reservation page, a driver will be assigned to the booking, track the flight in real time, and arrive at the designated location shortly thereafter. Customers can select the size of the vehicle (the search page includes the number of people and the number of suitcases each vehicle can handle), add notes about any additional needs (child seats, assistance needed for passenger accessibility), and add a tip for the driver. Booking the taxi locks in a predetermined cost for the trip, and customers can opt to book a return trip at the same time or wait to do so until later in their travel.

Local attraction tickets and passes can be purchased or reserved through Booking.com as well. Customers can enter their destination and view a list of local museums, parks, theaters, tourist attractions, and activities. Selecting one of the options reveals a page including details, reviews, cancellation conditions, and maps, and a selection option for the date, time (if applicable), and number of tickets. The descriptions also include any visitor requirements and limitations of the location, along with accessibility compliance and public transit options. Finally, Booking.com includes a link for customers who would like to list its properties as rental “stay” options for other Booking.com customers.

How It Works

Booking.com provides several menus for customers to choose from on the landing page. Customers select the combination of services they’d like to book (more can be added later) and work their way through the search screens, filtering results, reading through options, saving favorites, and eventually adding the services they want to a cart and checking out. For customers who aren’t quite ready to book their travel, the site also offers a range of researched guides to choosing destinations. Customers can click into areas that interest them to read more about the location, learn more about the neighborhoods in which they can stay, and read commentary about local traditions and customs.

International customers (or domestic customers traveling internationally) will appreciate that Booking.com allows users to select their preferred language and currency. Once selected, these choices remain consistent on each page until they’re changed

Cost and Discounts

Booking.com’s reference page explains how its service works, how it approves contracts with travel companies, and how it makes money. No booking fees are charged to the customer, but the hosts and travel companies pay a commission to Booking.com after the travel has been completed.

Booking.com offers several up-front ways to save money. The first is a free Booking.com account, which enables customers to save their searches, their favorites, and their travel plans, and—most importantly—automatically get a percentage off all travel booked through the site. There are several “Genius Levels”: the more you use Booking.com, the more perks and discounts you get on your next trips.

The membership is also described as the gateway to “Secret Deals,” indicating that in addition to the automatic percentage off the cost of travel, members will have access to special discount deals as they become available. Such discounts will be marked with a logo once the customer has signed in and begun a search.

Regardless of whether a customer is a member or not, Booking.com offers packages called “Getaway Deals.” These deals provide unusually discounted rates on hotels, if the travel is booked between specific dates.

Beyond its branded discounts, Booking.com provides customers with tools within the individual search functions to compare the costs of the same travel through different airlines, different hotel chains, and different rental car companies to assist customers in choosing the best deal for their travel.

Cancellation and adjustment terms at Booking.com are based on the policies of the individual companies with whom the customer is making a reservation through Booking.com. This means that in some cases customers may be able to cancel or reschedule a booking at no cost until a certain date, after which a cancellation fee will be incurred. In other cases, the reservation may be held with a credit card but not actually charged until the travel occurs and can be canceled at any time. And in some cases the travel cannot be canceled at all, and customers will be charged the full price even if they do not complete the trip. These policies are not set by Booking.com, but the company boasts of its transparency in communicating the policies to the customer in a clear way to avoid confusion.

Customer Service

Customer service is accessible through the question-mark icon located in the top banner on the Booking.com landing page. It appears in other locations, too, wherever there may be additional information available or needed. Customer service information can also be found in a text link at the bottom of each page. Service is available 24/7 to assist before, during, or after travel.

How can the company help if there’s a problem? Booking.com has a contract with each of its service providers. If there’s a problem and a host can’t provide a customer with the accommodations or travel that was purchased, it is the responsibility of the host to find alternate and equivalent accommodation. In the event that this is impossible, Booking.com will allow the customer to choose another accommodation or service that is available on its platform at the same cost, or cancel the reservation with a full refund. If payment was made through Booking.com, the company will refund the customer directly, usually within 5 days. If payment was made directly to the service provider, Booking.com will facilitate a refund as quickly as possible. The company has removed service providers who were in breach of their contract, so it takes this commitment seriously.

Putting Booking.com to the Test

In order to evaluate Booking.com as a service, I planned a trip from Chicago to Washington, D.C., for a family of four. As I’m familiar with this particular trip, I was able to evaluate Booking.com’s claims and service from an experienced perspective, and I was pleased to discover that planning my travel through Booking.com resulted in some savings. More importantly, the centralization of the reservations services in one location made the planning easier and smoother than jumping around to many different sites and trying to keep track of where I’d looked versus where I’d booked something. Anyone who reviews booking websites knows that the accompanying app is just as important as the site, and Booking.com’s app is smooth as silk—which is crucial to easier travel. Nobody sprints through an airport logging into their laptop to check a flight time, and so the fact that all my reservations are in one place on my phone, ready to be flashed for admission, took a lot of stress out of travel.

Site Navigation and Experience

I used Booking.com to arrange flights, a rental car, a hotel, and several activities. My first impression of the site was that it was bright, colorful, and easy to navigate. A simple row of clickable links offered to take me directly to the product I wanted to search for, and while I didn’t need currency conversion or an additional language, I appreciated how easy it was to make those changes right at the top of the page. The site can be translated into about 45 different languages, so Booking.com is friendly to international travelers or speakers of other languages. As there are a lot of details, terms, and conditions to read carefully when booking travel, the easy option to read in other languages signals that the site welcomes a wide variety of customers and wants speakers of other languages to be able to scrutinize the policies.

Also in the top row is a link to customer service; this is noteworthy because many sites bury the contact information at the bottom of a long scroll down a page. Clicking the question mark at the very top will take customers to either a live chat or telephone option for contacting customer service, which is available 24 hours a day. I’m always happy to see this kind of availability, because I’m concerned that companies who hide their contact information don’t really want to hear from their customers. At first glance, the highlighted bar urging customers to sign in to contact customer service suggests that customers can’t get help without creating an account, but a quick refocus away from the highlighted bar shows that there’s also an option to continue without signing in. However, that option is only available for customers who have already booked travel—you’ll need a booking confirmation number and PIN. That’s fine for those who have questions after they’ve booked, but it does mean that anyone who needs to contact customer service before a purchase will have to register.

Booking.com really, really wants you to sign up for an account. It’s free and requires only an email address and password to create—or customers can choose to connect with Google, Facebook, Apple, or a phone. Scrolling up and down pages or opening the app, customers are reminded again and again that there are better deals, bargains, and percentages off if they sign up for an account. The pressure to sign up is fairly continuous until you choose to do so: reminders about deals, savings, and the convenience of tracking your travel in one place are quite convincing, but after the first few notices it begins to feel a little high-pressure. What if I just want to shop around for a bit before I hand over my email to yet another mailing list? The bottom of the screen notes that California residents have the option to click a box preventing Booking.com from selling their information. It’s common knowledge that email address information is bought and sold all the time, but the question of what other information will be sold or tracked is a little unsettling.

Finding the Best Deal

When shopping for a package, Booking.com first guided me to the search for a hotel. I chose the wider D.C. area because we planned to stay for a week, and a quick search revealed that downtown D.C. hotels are more expensive during the business week. I chose filters including free breakfast (which is a great value when traveling with a family), free internet access, a pool, and free parking for our rental car. The free parking isn’t a perk to overlook, and it’s an outstanding search feature that not all travel sites offer. Parking at a hotel can be a significant cost: Another hotel nearby was charging $50 per day to park in the attached lot, so the fact that Booking.com allows customers to filter out hotels that require those charges is a great cost-saver. Because we know the D.C. area well, we planned to use the rental car on some days and mass transit on others, so paying to park at the hotel and for street parking wherever we were on that day would have been cost-prohibitive.

I selected a Residence Inn by Marriott in Silver Spring, Maryland, as it met my filter requirements and included a microwave and refrigerator—nice touches when staying away from home for a week. Booking.com listed the cancellation policy as free if the reservation was canceled by May 1, but it offered the option of paying an additional $208 to leave the option open to cancel before May 31, just 3 days before my planned travel. Especially when traveling with a group where a member might get sick or suddenly have a change of plans, the free cancellation period and option for an extension of that period is welcome. The photos of the hotel are bright and clear, and while like all online hotel photos they’re pristine, they do offer views of all the parts of the room you’d want to see when choosing a place to stay: the bathroom, beds, kitchenette, storage areas, and communal spaces. They’re enough to see that the space has been updated fairly recently and that the room is large enough for our party’s needs. I clicked “Book now!” and was immediately taken to the available flights.

Because I selected a Flight+Hotel package, the cost per person/total trip cost shown on the hotel screen is the total package cost—if I select the “Recommended” flight on the next screen.

The flight selection page is quite clear-cut. There are filter boxes to narrow down the number of stops or layovers, sliders to set ranges for takeoff and landing times, and an option to narrow down the airlines offered. Because I selected nonstop flights only, the options were limited to American Airlines, Delta Airlines, Spirit Airlines, and United Airlines. Each flight combination listed the airline, the package discount savings, the length of the flights, and the additional cost per person if I selected a flight other than the one Booking.com recommended as the best value. As I know that the chance of getting my family onto a plane in Chicago at 6 a.m. is slim at best, I was very pleased to see that many of the other options would only add between $5 and $10 per person to the cost, though some of the other combinations would add $40 and up per person.

Then, a snag. The Washington, D.C., area has three major airports, including Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), Dulles International Airport (IAD), and Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI). Having chosen a hotel in Silver Spring, Maryland, I realized that the drive from Dulles would be long, and that BWI is only about 25 minutes from the hotel. Noting that the options provided by Booking.com did not include any flights to or from BWI, I clicked the button to edit the trip details, changed the destination airport to BWI, and clicked Go. Booking.com took me to a screen to confirm my hotel choice, then recalculated quickly. The only problem is that the “Recommended” flight to keep my full package discount was still a flight to and from Dulles. Several more options were to and from DCA (which is closer to Silver Spring than Dulles, but not…close). The first flight listed that would fly in and out of BWI, as I requested, would add $9 per person and would depart Chicago at 5:15 a.m. The next option for BWI (and the only workable one for us, timewise) would add a whopping $32 per person to the package price. While it makes sense for Booking.com to choose the least-expensive flights to make up package deals—and the 6 a.m. flights certainly qualify—I was disappointed that there wasn’t really a selection of options to the airport closest to where I wanted to fly. In the end, I adjusted the search and limited it to DCA, splitting the distance, and chose a well-timed departure from Chicago to DCA that will add only $5 per person to our package cost. The package will save me $826 over the cost of booking the flight and hotel separately, so I’ll overlook the fact that the return flight will leave DCA at 6 a.m. after all. Here’s hoping there’s lots of coffee to go at the free hotel breakfast! If not, Booking.com tells me I’ll have a coffee pot in my room for caffeination.

The confirmation page shows the full package price, total savings, and details. It features clickable buttons to change the hotel, the room, the flights, or to upgrade the flight to Economy Fully Refundable tickets for an additional $50 per person. Just below, the screen confirms that I have a standard SUV included in the package with unlimited mileage from Avis, or I can switch to Hertz and get a larger SUV for an extra $2 per day.

On one hand, it’s fantastic that customers can make all these adjustments from the confirmation page, rather than having to backtrack through all the individual screens. On the other hand, the number of “click here to change or upgrade” options are a little overwhelming. For anyone who is decision-averse or prone to overthinking, the confirmation page simply offers too many options—it feels as though you could easily miss an important decision. Also, several times when I tried editing the trip at this stage, the dates I had entered for travel changed suddenly from June 2/June 9 to June1/June 8. Perhaps this is a software glitch, but you’ll want to double-check your dates before booking.

In case the package price is stunning, Booking.com provides an option to finance the cost through Affirm, a reputable company that assists customers in spreading out payments for large purchases over several months.

Purchasing the Package

Before payment, a screen requires the entry of each passenger’s name, gender, and date of birth. Airlines require that passengers report a gender when purchasing tickets, but most major airlines have added nonbinary gender options to their booking procedures, as several states are now adding to their state-issued identification cards. At the time of this review, Booking.com was only offering the options of male and female, but as the industry shifts toward more inclusive options, perhaps that will also change.

The payment page is clear and straightforward: Billing.com accepts Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover, or customers can spread out payments with Affirm. It’s a little disappointing that PayPal, Venmo, and other online payment services aren’t accepted, though. Since many people are moving away from traditional credit cards in favor of online services, this is a limitation, but including Affirm is a good indication that this site is paying attention to trends in payment options. Throughout the checkout process, the travel itinerary is running down the right-hand side of the screen, which is a helpful reminder for those of us who tend to panic a little just before hitting the “Purchase” button.

Before I clicked that Purchase button, however, I stopped and created a Booking.com account. And guess what? The rates on some hotels and flights definitely dropped, and not insignificantly. The Genius Deals, which are flagged with blue labels, and the Secret Deals, which are flagged in green, offered beautiful hotels closer in to the city, though not on my travel dates and not including some of the amenities I selected. Some packages offered truly significant savings. Unfortunately, the price of the package I had chosen only dropped from $879 per person to $874 per person—a small savings over a week-long stay in exchange for my email address and some personal data. In addition, the free cancellation date on the hotel shifted forward to June 1, a date that nonmembers can only access for an additional $208. However, the same flights I booked for an extra $5 per person as a nonmember were listed as the Recommended flights for the package as a member, so there were savings on that front as well.

But at What Cost?

What was troubling in this experience was how difficult it was to replicate the costs. I built the same package (same dates, same hotel and flights, same car) and found different prices each time. The structure of the total cost changed—sometimes the hotel was less costly in one build but the flights were more—always ending with a total package price that was very similar to the other attempts. This is a bit confusing for customers trying to shop and compare costs, but it may be explained by shifting demands at the hotels and airlines in real time. The true benefit of membership appears to be the deals and packages that are offered as Genius and Getaway Deals, as opposed to an overall discount on all travel purchases.

While we won’t be using one, I checked out the option to reserve an Airport Taxi. Booking.com is clearly taking on Uber and Lyft with this service, and it’s a great option. Travelers can choose the size of the vehicle that will pick them up, request special services such as child seats, assistance for passengers who may need help getting in and out of the vehicle, and other amenities. Entering the flight number allows the driver to track the flight’s progress and arrive for pickup at precisely the correct time, and the price is preset in the booking and can be paid ahead. The service appears to be extremely convenient and well thought out.

And don’t forget the option to purchase tickets and passes to activities and destinations during travel! The Attractions tab provides a huge range of activities, including walking and bus tours, private tours, dinner cruises, and interactive scavenger hunts. Most of the museums in Washington, D.C., are free, but quite a few companies offer guided tours that can be purchased through Booking.com. The Attractions tab in other locations includes museum entry tickets, theater tickets, and entrance to other destinations. Your account will keep a record of your itinerary, and you can use the Booking.com app to show the purchased tickets or print them before you leave.

How Helpful Is Customer Service?

I used the online contact form to ask a question about child seat booking with an Airport Taxi. I sent the question at 9:10 on a Monday evening and received an email in response in less than 10 minutes, directing me cheerfully to the taxi-specific contact form or inviting me to call the taxi hotline. While navigating to the taxi help area (which I had not previously seen) by clicking the link included in the email, I found the answer to my question in an extensive FAQ section. When they say that customer service is available 24 hours a day, they mean it. It is enormously reassuring to know that when traveling you’ll have a person to talk to or a prompt response if you have a question, a concern, or something has gone wrong.

For Your Information…

In addition to booking travel, Booking.com serves as a repository of useful information for travelers.

  • TravelTalk is an online community of travelers sharing information, answering each other’s questions, and sharing experiences, which is hosted on Booking.com’s site.
  • Links to local governments with information about the culture, traditions, and travel considerations is especially useful for those traveling overseas.
  • A helpful page provides health information for travelers, including the requirements and restrictions on traveling to and from international destinations.
  • A banner directs those who are fleeing danger or violence to links that can help them, providing an outstanding (and free) public service.

Overall, Booking.com was a pleasant experience and left me feeling as though I’d done solid research, chosen from excellent options, and booked my travel in a time-and cost-effective manner. I especially like that one website will have all my travel plans in one location; the app is also very streamlined and will be much more convenient to use while traveling than digging through emails looking for confirmation numbers and flight times.

While there were some glitches, including flight times that seemed incomplete, the randomly switching travel dates, and the inability to replicate a package cost, overall the pricing is reasonable and the interface is good. The membership offers a clear benefit if you’re not locked into travel dates or specific locations—you can really save a lot of money there.

Booking.com Reviews by Customers

Customer reviews are decidedly mixed. Reviewers at Consumer Affairs average 3.2 out of 5 stars, with excellent ratings citing easy and clear booking procedures, outstanding customer service, and great accommodation options. Poor reviews at Consumer Affairs, sitejabber, TrustPilot , and the Better Business Bureau all seem to zero in on problems with cancellations and refunds. Customers who are more comfortable communicating in Spanish can search for “Booking.com reseñas” and find similar results. Reviewers felt there was a disconnect in the chain between the service provider, Booking.com, and the customer, and sometimes lengthy delays or refusals of refunds. This type of complaint appears to be common among travel service platforms; other booking reviews indicate the same kind of problems exist throughout the industry. Some of the complaints were simply a result of the customer misreading or failing to read one of Booking.com’s policies, while others were valid concerns. To its credit, every complaint on the Better Business Bureau’s website included a prompt response from Booking.com’s customer service team either explaining the policy decision, requesting more information to begin an investigation, or apologizing for a mishandled situation.

How Booking.com Stacks Up to the Competition

Compared to other travel platforms, reserving travel on Booking.com was equal or slightly less expensive. While some competitors had more offerings, especially when choosing flights, Booking.com’s interface was smoother and easier to navigate, and the fact that the costs listed as a customer moves through the process include taxes and fees is helpful when making choices. Other platforms don’t always include this information, so a customer could blithely plan an entire trip, then get to the final confirmation page and discover hundreds or thousands of dollars in additional fees and taxes.

Including the nontraditional lodgings and professional hosts alongside large hotels and resorts was a strong move to compete with popular companies such as Airbnb and Vrbo, and incorporating the taxi reservation system into the complete travel platform at Booking.com keeps all the travel arrangements in one place, rather than customers needing to remember to call an Uber or Lyft. The services themselves are similar, but by centralizing travel planning into one platform online or through the app, Booking.com has made it easy for customers to keep everything together.

Should You Use Booking.com?

Is the website a little busy? Sure. But many people will like the callouts and bold colors and enjoy the different services they emphasize. Are there some “glitches” in the site? Here and there. Booking.com is a great option that will help you shop for, select, reserve, and centralize your transportation, lodging, and activities during travel. It’s important to make sure that customers don’t blow off the Terms and Conditions and just click the box—many, if not most, of the customer complaints focused on disagreements over cancellation, reschedule, and refund policies, so it’s critical to understand them before booking.

Booking.com’s platform takes a task that many people find frustrating and makes it enjoyable. It’s easier to get excited about planning a vacation when there aren’t 30 tabs open in two browsers as the travelers try to compare hotel rooms, airfare, and activities—Booking.com does it in just one tab, and does it well.

9 Best Apps for Finding Cheap Flights

The best flight apps help you score a deal with a few swipes on your smartphone.

While a looming recession could reduce demand for travel and bring prices down, that doesn’t help those who want to fly right now.

While inflation may be cooling nationwide, travelers are likely to still face some sticker shock when booking flights for this year’s vacations. As of March 2023, airline fares were up 17.7% compared to the year before, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics .

Industry experts point to a variety of factors pushing prices higher: ongoing inflation , oil prices and a lack of airplanes and pilots to fly them. While a looming recession could reduce demand for travel and bring prices down, that doesn’t help those who want to fly right now.

Fortunately, there are a number of apps designed to help you find cheap flights . The best flight apps offer features that will alert you to price drops, let you search for cheaper travel times or help you find special pricing not found elsewhere.

Try one of these discount airfare apps and services that frequent flyers say work for them:

  • Skyscanner.
  • Dollar Flight Club.
  • Google Flights.
  • ExpertFlyer.
  • Your Favorite Airline’s App.

A good flight alert program can simplify the process of finding a deal. These services send emails or notifications whenever there is discounted airfare available to selected destinations, and Going – formerly known as Scott's Cheap Flights – is a favorite source for flight alerts. The company notes that most deals are 40% to 90% off normal prices.

“(It) is one of the best apps to use when searching for cheap flights,” says Alex Miller, CEO of UpgradedPoints.com. “It can narrow down what city you're located in and then alert you when a qualifying airfare, based on criteria that you set, is found.”

Users can choose from three tiers of service. Free limited accounts receive alerts about deals on international economy flights. Premium plans cost $49 a year and include international and domestic economy flights as well as weekend getaways and mistake fares from chosen airports. Frequent globetrotters may want to spring for the elite plan that provides alerts for economy , business and first-class flights as well as mistake fares from all U.S. airports. It costs $199 per year.

Skyscanner has a free flight app that is compatible with both Apple and Android devices and provides pricing alerts when a good deal becomes available. The app is easy to use and allows you to set alerts for specific dates or routes.

Travelers can also use Skyscanner's calendar and charts to compare hundreds of flights for both international and domestic destinations. The app highlights flights that emit less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, lets users mix and match flights from different carriers and offers a search option that allows travelers to find the best prices for flights originating from their chosen airport.

When you find a flight you like, Skyscanner will direct you to a third-party booking app to make the purchase. In addition to flights, users can search for hotels and car rentals using Skyscanner.

Dollar Flight Club

Dollar Flight Club is similar to Going, but it structures its plans differently.

Free accounts get alerted to deals from one departure airport while premium members can choose four departure airports for deal alerts on domestic and international economy flights. Premium membership costs $69 a year. There is also a Premium Plus+ membership that runs $169 per year and includes premium economy and business class deals as well.

The service says booking a single flight using Dollar Flight Club can provide a return of 10 times your investment, and it provides additional discounts to Premium and Premium Plus+ members. With Premium Perks, members get access to special discounts from partners such as Babbel and Scribd.

Google Flights

While not currently available as an app, Google Flights offers a simple online interface that allows you to search for flights to specific airports and then see a calendar view that shows when flights will be cheapest. It also has a price graph that allows you to see pricing trends over time.

“You can plug in your start city and then let Google Flights make suggestions on where to fly from there based upon the cost of airfare,” Miller says. That’s a useful tool for travelers with flexibility.

Once you find the right airfare, you'll need to find and book it directly with the carrier or through a third-party booking service.

Hopper says it can predict future travel prices with 95% accuracy and, as a result, saves users an average of $65 on their flights. Users can watch certain flights and be notified when prices drop to their expected lowest level. Hotel and car rental deals can also be found on Hopper, and everything can be booked through the app.

That’s one reason it’s among the best flight apps, according to Kevin Raposo, founder of KnowTechie. He used it to book a vacation to Saint Lucia and says it couldn’t have been easier. “You can do it all at the push of a button,” he notes.

Those booking through Hopper can earn Carrot Cash Rewards of 1% back on flights, which can be redeemed on future bookings. For those just browsing on the app – which is free and available for Apple and Android devices – Hopper will color code flights using green, yellow and red to indicate which flights are most and least expensive.

Compatible with Android and Apple devices, Kiwi promises its app will provide travelers with exclusive offers and prices. It searches for the best rates from all available airlines to piece together the lowest-priced itinerary.

The free app also offers the opportunity to search for all deals from a specific airport, which can be handy for those who are ready to take a vacation but don't have a particular destination in mind. Within the app, users can get price alerts, access mobile boarding passes and view airport maps.

Kiwi also offers travel hacks that can save money, such as bookings with “hidden cities” and a Nomad tool for those who want to visit multiple cities. What's more, the app offers other travel services such as destination guides and the location of Wi-Fi hotspots.

ExpertFlyer

The ExpertFlyer website won’t win any design awards. It looks like something from the early days of the internet and even references now-obsolete Blackberry devices. But frequent flyers say that shouldn’t deter you.

“ExpertFlyer is another great tool, though admittedly it's for the more advanced flyer,” Miller says. “Rather than perform ordinary searches to uncover good airfare deals, you can set alerts and search by specific inventory on flights.”

That means that this service is intended for those who know where, when and with which airline they want to fly. If you have a specific route that you travel frequently, ExpertFlyer can help you find discounted fares. A free version provides seat alerts while a paid pro subscription, which starts at $4.99 per month, comes with additional features such as the ability to search for awards and upgrades.

Airfare apps aren’t only for those booking vacations. Business travelers and their employers are often searching for a good deal as well. That’s the niche Onriva fills.

“We’ve built a platform to bring everything in one place (so) you don’t have to hop from site to site,” says Onriva founder and CEO Vajid Jafri. “This has never existed before.”

While other apps may make it possible to book from multiple companies, they typically serve as a digital travel agency. With Onriva, all bookings are made directly with an airline or other vendor through the app’s platform. Onriva also provides customer service for these bookings for added convenience. The app brings together travel options from more than 2 million suppliers and then uses artificial intelligence to learn user preferences and make recommendations.

Anyone with a business email address can sign up for an Onriva account. Those who want access to advanced features – including cash back on bookings – will need to sign up for the premium service that costs $96 per year.

Your Favorite Airline’s App

In your search for cheap flights , don’t overlook your favorite airline’s app. Booking direct can sometimes be the best option, according to Sandra McLemore, a travel TV host and travel industry expert.

“While these (third-party) apps may feel convenient and more user-friendly than other online booking options, buyer beware,” McLemore says. If you buy your tickets through that third-party app, you may find it difficult to receive customer service should any issues arise. “An airline will send you right back to the app or online booking engine to receive service,” McLemore explains.

By focusing your spending with a specific airline, you may find it easier to accumulate frequent flyer miles which can be redeemed for free flights and save you more money in the long run.

Terrible Customer Service

I have an account with Booking.com & received a message that I would acheive Genius Level 3 status if I made two bookings prior to April 9. I did but then received another message saying I would achieve Genius Level 3 if I complete 2 bookings by September. My account in Booking.com shows that I have completed 16 bookings within 2 years, which qualifies for Level 3. I emailed Booking about this. I received a reply, probably AI generated, just stating their policy. I've asked for a phone number twice to no avail. They send a number in which you have to have a current confirmation. Terrible customer service and very deceptive.

April 2024: booked a 2 persons+2 dogs rooms in Bristol with Booking.com. We ended up in a claustrophobic, windowless room, the size of a cupboard where we had to crawl over each other to get in/out of bed. May 2024: booked a 2 persons room in Birmingham. We ended up in a - albeit large - room with sealed windows; a sink in the bathroom that would have been perfect for a 5 years old but absolutely impractical for 2 medium-height adults, and no possibility whatsoever to store any toiletries in the bathroom or in the bedroom. In both cases, the description of the room did not give any indication that we could have been confronted with such a problem I will not use Booking.com again as the information they provide is neither accurate or complete.

Complained to them that hotel would not…

Complained to them that hotel would not give me a refund for the second night after I checked out due to noise from a games room and teenagers running amok late at night . Customer Services asked me for more information and then ignored me. Absolutely hopeless.

European Scam Upcharges Quotes !

Scam! They had my hotel listed for 1k USD for 3 days and charged $2500 Canadian! ( should be less than USD!) I had to struggle to find phone contact. They told me to submit a price match which I did including photos of their listing. They followed up with again requesting I download the photo of their own listing which the site did not even work. Innocent ppl using this site may trust them and not read the confirmation and get stuck paying these fees( more than the hotels non discounted!!! ) I used to trust them ! wasted a day setting up a multi site trip and could not proceed. Caution - they are now a European scam!!

Absolutely disgusted

Filthy accommodation complained requested a refund when you get through to customer services after a lengthy wait they pretend they can't hear you and they cut you off. Another time they put me on hold then I got cut off. Rubbish avoid doing business with them.

Terrible, exhausting experience of getting my property on their system for almost 2 months. Ridiculusly useles support team, everytime new person, cant do anything, only say how sorry they are. I feel sorry for people who work there... I can hardly believe that such a giant can be so inefficient, unprofessional which results in house owners loosing time and money while dealing with the platform. Zillion miles away from AIRBNB on the level of support and efficiency.

Will never book through these again…

Will never book through these again even the hotels are telling you to book direct the Holiday Inn York told me I should have booked direct. My holiday is off to a terrible start with booking. Com I’ve been told I’m not gauranteed the standard room I booked or even guaranteed a double bed I’m also told that the hotel is under refurbishment they waited till I paid the full amount non refundable before telling me this. If I don’t get what I paid for after my holiday I will pursue this through the courts for mis selling if I have to!!! Booking.com are uncontactable they send you to the holiday in. Who send you back, no customer service with either of these company’s

Please don't book any flight via…

Please don't book any flight via booking.com because you will regret it. I tried booking through them and their confirmation email doesn't come with standard details about the flight and customer service is not helpful either.

Double Shade

Booked a stay which seemed like a good deal at the Silver Legacy in Reno. Booking charged me a resort fee in addition to the advertised rate. Silver Legacy charged me an additional resort fee. I was double-charged the resort fee. Neither company would refund me the extra resort fee even after showing the proof that I was double-charged. Neither company would take responsibility for the double charging. I am sure they have done this to thousands. Deceptive and shady business practices. Booking has lost a Genius Level 3 customer and I will never stay at a Ceasars brand hotel again.

Check your hotel

The hotel we booked had no mention of construction on booking.com website. When we arrived the lobby was torn apart. We had a jackhammer ( literally) running at 9am both Saturday and Sunday morning 6 feet from our door. We had a two night stay and would have been charged for late cancellation, not to mention no other rooms were available.

Absolutely disgusting experience

I had to sleep in a car outside the village hotel car park in Leeds because the Booking.com website error and the coustomer service put me on hold for 3 hours, spoke with 4 different agents 3 of them put the phone down on me, the way i was treated was absolutely shocking, I will never use this app ever again, further more when asked about rfund they blamed it on the hotel even though it wasn't the hotels fault.

TOS enforcment non exitent

customer support incredibly hard to contact, and contacting the support would not be necessary if booking did not allowed for hosts to post fake, old or irrelevant pictures. Hosts are allowed to post pictures of the city, decorations souvenirs instead of pictures of the rooms. One listing litterally had one badly taken picture of the room and 10+ pictures of the garden of the house. this was the listing for a 3 bedroom home. how is this allowed. Filters are good but could be better. I don't want to look for twin beds. I want 2 rooms with 2 full beds for 4 people.

I have used Booking.com for some time and until now never had a problem. I will never use them again. I booked a 'camping pod' and used my 'reward' five minutes later decided to book a caravan instead (more room, more facilities) the change was simple, except that I lost my 'reward' according to them any cancellation involving a reward means the reward will be returned. It has not, for months I have been emailing and I have sent every scrap of information requested, several times. Again today I sent off everything they need to know, and they asked for. Again I get an email saying they need more information. I will never ever use Booking.com again. Not even worth the one star.

No customer support with reservation problems

On Monday 29 April 2024, on arrival at the Dana Hotel in San Diego Marina, I canceled the 2nd and 3rd night of this reservation after learning that they charged an extra $35 daily parking fee that neither Booking.com nor the hotel disclosed on their websites. On my request the hotel (the person who helped me is named Ulysses) canceled the last two days of my stay and said the refund would come from Booking.com and that I would receive an email confirming the refund. I received neither an email or a refund. Why should I keep my account in booking.com?

I believe that you should have a Brazilian support team. Portuguese is another nationality, culture and the language is very difficult to understand when they speak fast. I had a bad experience trying to solve a problem caused for lack of professionalism from booking.com and the support was made by a Portuguese man who didn’t allow me to speak, when I tried to explain I couldn’t understand Portuguese from Portugal he angry said he was being victim of xenophobia and ended de call while I was trying to speak.

Booking.com has no integrity

Booking.com has no integrity. They don't do what they say. Their customer service agents are devious. They say they will help you BUT DON'T. They promise you things and DON'T come through. They don't answer messages and don't follow-up either. I have a case that;s been open for over 6 weeks. I've wasted a lot of time calling and messaging and still don't have a resolution. I give up and will never use Booking.com again.

What can I say my experience is terrible I booked non refundable hotel cancelled by mistake and straight away rebooked the hotel then I contacted the hotel and booking.com and they will not refund any of it even that I got 2 hotel bookings same date and times an hotel they still took all my money. Very disaapointed Loyal (ex) customer

I was a loyal customer to them more than 10 years and never compared prices until I was checkin-in with a friend and saw that I paid 33% more than them with the same cancelation conditions and without breakfast. When I contacted them to activate their price match claim, they said it is only valid prior to the stay which makes it a false advertising as the intent of price match is to give you peace of mind. I will never use them again

Is Booking.com Legit, Safe & Reliable?

Is Booking.com Safe & Reliable?

Wondering whether or not Booking.com is a legitimate, safe, and reliable choice? We’ve got you covered.

This review and guide will tell you everything you need to know about Booking.com’s popular online travel agency services.

We’ll cover everything from credit card safety to the reliability of booking hotels, flights, and everything in between.

Is Booking.com Safe?

Booking.com is one of the largest, most respected online travel agencies (or OTA’s) in the world and is absolutely a safe choice. It has an A+ rating from the BBB and its parent company, Booking Holdings, also owns a number of other well-known sites, including Priceline.

There are more than 1.5 million rooms booked every day through Booking.com, so you can rest assured that you’re not dealing with a shady, back-alley operation. The site actually has the highest daily traffic of any OTA out there.

Credit card information and personal data is secure in the system. And unlike less scrupulous sites, Booking.com doesn’t sell or rent personal data to any third party companies.

Booking actually does a pretty good job with their policies and processes. You can read a full breakdown on their privacy policy page .

They also made a good video that summarizes all of it:

Booking.com only collects your info in order to reserve and book your room with the hotel (or other accommodation) itself. The Booking.com service is essentially just a very efficient portal to manage your reservation directly with the hotel.

In certain circumstances, reserving a room with Booking.com can often be a safer bet than direct-booking a hotel. This is especially true in regard to international travel, when your desired accommodation provider may not have a reliable website or system.

Is Booking.com Reliable?

The Booking.com service is very reliable and efficient. Matter of fact, it’s considered to be one of the best in the industry. Unless you’re dealing with a large hotel with a sophisticated online booking system, you’re almost always going to be better off using a reliable OTA like Booking if the price is right.

This process is almost always very reliable, along with being quick and efficient. (We’ve used Booking.com countless times in countless countries and have never had a real problem.)

Even though the vast majority of customers love the Booking.com service, that’s not to say that there aren’t those who have had any issues with their booking process. Hiccups are possible, no matter what service you use, but we can confidently say that Booking.com is usually not at fault.

In the rare event that there is an issue with a hotel reserved through Booking.com, it’s usually due to a problem on the hotel system’s end.

Many people don’t realize that Booking.com is simply serving as an in-between for consumers and accommodations. When you make a reservation, Booking.com is simply handling it for you and passing along your information to the destination hotel.

Hotels, homes, vacation rentals, and other accommodation types use the site to list their properties and then to manage their listings. It’s the hotel that sets the price and details for Booking.com to display.

For the smoothest process, we highly recommend that you always call to verify directly with the hotel after making the reservation through Booking.com. This will give you some extra peace of mind to know that the hotel has received all of the correct dates, payment, and additional information for your stay.

How Does Booking.com Make Money?

Booking.com makes their money from charging set rates to the hotels and accommodations that use the site to list their properties. However, Booking doesn’t actually receive the percentage until a guest arrives to the hotel for their stay. Canceled reservations result in no profit to Booking.com.

Typically, the base rates charged by Booking.com to hotels is 15%. This can vary, depending on the level of partnership the hotel has with booking. Hotels can upgrade their membership to receive more favorable rates.

Full Review (Features, Tools & More)

Hotels & accommodations.

No question, Booking.com’s biggest asset is its outstanding accommodations reservation service. The sheer number of hotels, homes, B&B’s, and more combined with a huge list of filterable features make it one of the best in the biz.

Listings are shown in a column that can be sorted by price, reviews, stats, and even their distance from downtown.

You can also use a map view we included earlier in the post. It uses Google maps’ underlying software and works better than the map views on many other travel sites.

But the best Booking.com feature for finding the right hotel has to be the massive list of available filters. There are quite a few of them, making hyper-specific searches quick and easy.

Here’s a quick guide to all of the filters you can apply to your accommodation search:

  • Budget: Filters results by price range.
  • Star Rating: Filters results by the property’s star rating.
  • Distance from City Center: Filters results by the property’s distance from city center or downtown area.
  • Online Payment: Filters results to show which property’s allow the use of third-party online payment processor (like Paypal)
  • Fun Things to Do: Filters results to show properties that offer access to extra activities like fitness centers, bike rentals or hiking trails.
  • Availability: Filters results to only show properties with availability on your chosen dates.
  • Deals: Filters results to show properties that are currently offering deals or special pricing.
  • 24-Hour Front Desk: Filters results to show properties that have a dedicated 24/7 front desk.
  • Reservation Policy: Filters results by which properties have a free cancellation policy or don’t require a prepayment at the time of booking.
  • Beach Access: Filters results to show which properties have beachfront (or lakefront) access.
  • Meals: Filters results to show properties that include breakfast only, breakfast and dinner, or simply have kitchen facilities for preparing your own meals.
  • Stay Type: Filters results to show properties by the stay experience.
  • Property Type: Filters results by type of accommodation. Hotels, apartments, hostels, guesthouses, bed and breakfasts, etc.
  • Landmarks: Filters results to show properties that are near prominent landmarks in the area. This could be parts of the city, attractions, geological features, and more.
  • Bed Preference: Filters results to show properties that offer a specific type of bed layout. Especially useful in Europe where beds can sometimes be confusing to outside travelers .
  • Review Score: Filters results by the review scores given by real Booking.com customers with verified stays.
  • Facilities: Filters results to show listings with property features like on-site restaurants, non-smoking rooms, pet friendly rooms, free wifi, free parking, swimming pools, room service, and more.
  • Room Facilities: Filters results to show listings that feature certain room-specific features like kitchens, bathtubs, flatscreen televisions, coffee makers, etc.
  • District: Filters results to show properties in the different city districts and neighborhoods. For example, in New York City you could choose things like “Manhattan”, “Times Square”, “Soho”, etc.
  • Facilities for Disabled Guests: Filters results to show properties that feature disability-friendly features like wheelchair accessibility, toilet grab rails, lowered sinks, etc.
  • Chain: Filters results to show properties that belong to a specific hotel chain.
  • Room Accessibility: Filters results to show properties with specific accessibility features like ground floor rooms, roll-in showers, elevator accessible upper rooms, etc.

As you can see, Booking gives you a ton of options for laser-focusing your search and pinpointing the perfect properties. You really can’t beat that level of detail for finding the exact type of accommodation you have in mind.

Individual Hotel Pages are Equally Intuitive

Booking.com’s individual property pages do a great job of providing you a ton of information in an easy-to-read way. There’s a lot of substance without too much clutter.

Whether you’re on mobile or on desktop, you’ll see a simple layout with pictures, descriptions, reviews, points of interest, maps, and more.

Most property listing are very well-executed. The only times you’ll really encounter a lackluster listing is in the case of a more obscure property.

Keep in mind that these listings are controlled by the property itself. Pictures and travel information for the property are provided to Booking.com. What you see on the screen is generally straight from the hotel itself.

Also, it’s important to make note that pricing on Booking.com is displayed as a trip total, not the nightly rate. For example, a 3 night stay at a $100/night hotel will be shown simply as $300.

Definitely keep that pricing style in mind when you’re price shopping around the web. It’s not uncommon for unfamiliar travelers to accidentally dismiss Booking.com’s listings as too expensive because they thought the trip grand total was actually the nightly rate.

Price Match Guarantee for Accommodations

Don’t forget about Booking.com’s price match guarantee. Hotels and other accommodations are the only area in which this is offered.

All you need to do is submit a competitor site’s lower-priced listing to Booking.com via the “Found this room cheaper somewhere else” link on your confirmation page.

This is an outstanding feature, especially with how flexible it is.

You can submit a price match claim within 24 hours of your check-in date. Just make sure that everything is identical between your Booking.com reservation and the lower-priced listing you’ve found elsewhere.

The only caveat is that the cheaper listing must be readily available for Booking.com to see when reviewing your claim. So be quick to jump on the opportunities when you see them!

Cancellation Policies

Booking.com doesn’t have a single standard cancellation policy. Each individual accommodation property is able to set their own.

This is standard for most OTA’s, so nothing really notable here.

Just make sure to read the details before you book. You can also filter the search results to only show properties with free cancellation. That will save you some time if you know that you require that extra flexibility.

The Flights portion of Booking.com is pretty straightforward. It’s powered by sister-company Kayak and is very much in line with what you’d expect from any good online travel agency flight service.

Booking.com Flights Search

Flight search result pages are laid out cleanly with all pertinent information displayed in an easy-to-digest way. There are clear indicators for things like layovers and whether or not checked baggage is included in the fare.

The nice thing about using Booking.com for flights is that, unlike with Priceline, you’ll often be sent directly to an airline’s website to actually complete the booking.

And just like it is with the Hotels search filters, the Flights search filters on Booking.com are the best feature.

Here’s the breakdown of flight search filters:

  • Stops: Filters results by the number of stops/layovers during the flight.
  • Times: Filters results by the desired windows of time you’d like to depart and land. Round trip flights will include options for both flight legs.
  • Duration: Filters results by the entire duration of a flight leg. Nonstop flights will obviously be the lowest, with layover increasing duration as you work your way up.
  • Airports: Filters results by specific departure/landing airports. You can also check an additional to keep your departure/return airport the same.
  • Airlines: Filters results by flights offered by specific airlines.
  • Alliance: Filters results by flights offered within specific airline alliances.
  • Booking Sites: Filters results by which sites you’ll be sent to in order to actually book a flight. This is a useful feature if you’d prefer to only see flight listings that are bookable directly with airlines, rather than third-party agency sites.
  • Cabin: Filters results by level of cabin (Basic Economy, First Class, etc.)
  • Flight Quality: Filters results by flight classifications (Red-eye flights, Hack Fare sites, Wi-Fi flights, etc.)
  • Layover Airports: Filters results by airports that can be used for layovers.
  • Aircraft: Filters results by type of plane (Narrow-body jet, Wide-body jet, Regional Jet, Turbo Prop, etc.)
  • Model: Filters results by specific models of aircraft.
  • Price: Filters results by a set price range.

There’s also a handy “Our Advice” widget at the top of the Flights search result page. Keep an eye on this to see whether or not Booking.com recommends buying now or waiting.

This recommendation is based off of price projections and history. It’s not foolproof, but it’s a nice feature to give you some extra confidence about whether or not it’s the right time to buy a flight.

Rental Cars

Car rentals shown on Booking.com are actually powered and booked by Rentalcars.com, which is another Booking Holdings brand.

It’s mostly self-explanatory, but you should take care to keep an eye on the pricing. You’ll notice in most cases that the list price and the total price will be reflected by two different amounts.

The first price you see doesn’t account for taxes and extra fees, so make sure to look at the total price at the bottom of the listing.

Overall, the process is okay, but we’d usually opt to go straight to Rentalcars.com or another site before going to Booking.com for car rentals.

Airport Taxis

A lesser known feature of Booking.com, the Airport Taxis tool can be a good choice if you want to automatically sync up all of your transportation in one fell swoop.

Booking.com Airport Taxis

All you have to do is book your taxi through the Booking.com system and it will set you up with a driver. That driver will meet you upon arrival and take you to the taxi.

The best thing about this service is that the driver is monitoring your flight. No need to worry if you’re delayed- the driver will adjust automatically.

This is a great way to skip the taxi lines at the airport and get out of dodge as soon as you land.

Taxi rates listed here are up front, so what you see is what you get. No hidden fees or extra charges. And the cancellation policy is also favorable, allowing you to cancel for free in most cases within 24 hours of your scheduled pick-up time.

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for a one-stop site for finding a seemingly unlimited number of great hotels, apartments, vacation homes and more, it’s really hard to beat Booking.com. They’re absolutely at the very top of the accommodations game.

The high volume of searchable properties all over the world is awesome as it is, but Booking’s search filters really put a bow on the whole process. It’s extremely useful to have such a wide range of adjustable parameters to zero in on your perfect hotel.

For everything else (flights, rental cars, taxis), Booking.com also does a pretty good job. All of these secondary features are routed through other services owns by Booking Holdings, but that really doesn’t make them any less efficient.

We firmly believe that Booking.com offers enough value that it should always be checked when price-shopping a trip. It’s a great tool with tons of properties and competitive prices.

Anyone on the fence about the company’s trustworthiness and reliability can breathe easy. The company is about as transparent as it gets for such a massive presence in the world of online travel.

Enjoy your travels!

“Flight flexi ticket is a literal scam!”

Avoid buying any flight *******@bookingcom at all costs. Especially their flexi ticket which they don't support and is a literal scam! We tried to get a flight change for 5 days, eight calls, the flight times came and went, while they promised to call back in 3 hrs every time. Never a call came! Left stranded overseas, our only option was to buy a completely new ticket direct from an airline company. To top it off, their online complaints form is broken on both chrome and edge.

We were charged twice for a 4 night stay. We also only stayed 1 night because the hotel room was infested with bed bugs and cockroaches. We were bitten at least 100 times. We informed Booking and sent them pictures of the bites, the roaches and the double charges on my Visa. They kept saying they were not receiving our emails and basically refused to help us. We ended up paying for 8 nights, stayed 1 and were in a horrible room. They did nothing. Expedia would have been far more helpful.

I've been trying to get my money back from booking.com cancelation for the longest time ever. The amount of over 500$ has been taken out of my "wallet" and never returned! Customer service is fully automated, which means you never get to speak with an actual person. All emails are answered by an automated service as well. DO NOT BOOK THROUGH booking.com! Go to hotels directly or airbnb.

Tip for consumers: Total rip off!!! Stay away from booking.com!

Disappointing Experience - Unfulfilled Booking and No Refund I regret to share my disappointing experience with Booking.com regarding a reservation I made for an Oyo hotel in Mumbai. Despite making a reservation and paying half of the total amount in advance, I encountered a significant issue upon arrival. Upon reaching the hotel, I was informed that the booked room was unavailable and that I could secure a room by paying an additional Rs. 1000 beyond the originally listed price on Booking.com. This unexpected demand was both distressing and unprofessional. Despite raising this concern with the hotel staff, I was met with indifference and no resolution was offered. To exacerbate matters, I've reached out to Booking.com's customer care twice over the past three months, yet regrettably, no action has been taken to rectify the situation or refund my money. My sincere advice to future guests is to exercise caution when using Booking.com. It appears that their booking system does not guarantee room availability, and the lack of responsiveness to customer concerns is disheartening. I strongly recommend calling and confirming reservations directly with the hotel to avoid unforeseen complications. Date of experience: December 15,2023

I booked a scam on booking.com and fought so hard for my refund. I still haven't received the refund for the scam, but only for the additional costs that came from booking a new accommodation. Worst customer service on the planet and they're making billions.

Our hotel was cancelled by booking.com but we have not had a refund (£450). they are making us jump through hoops by asking for credit card and bank statements for the last 6 months to prove we have not been refunded. i think the hotel has gone out of business. does anyone know what our rights are?

Don't waste time with booking.com. They have horrible customer service and will make every attempt to cheat you. Simply report the problem to your credit card company to get your refund.

Hi. i booked a hotel room through booking.com. i just read the reviews and now i am worried. should i be worried?

Run. Run away. This company and the company used to insure their bookings are scams.

Hi there i want to know do you give valid customers who book with you all the time. i have just booked 4 hotels and am looking to book another 2 but can your site not give me any sort of discount for using only booking. com

I don't know why you're even using this site Stephanie. Their after sales is disgusting! Recommend travel Republic. Great prices and options

When i book a hotel on booking.com and pay by credit card, do i have to pay again when i check in?

You pay a non refundable price on line. When you check into your hotel, it's billed to your Bookings.com reservation plus incidentals (local calls, parking fees, resort fees, dining, bar fees, Europe charges local or city tax, spa fees...) the hotel will ask for a card as a hold for these fees. Use bookings.com, find the hotel you wish to stay in (get all info and contact them directly via website and price match) the Marriott in Rome had a room for $80.00 less on the Marriott website than these, so called MONEY SAVING SITES.

How can i organize flights too

Trevago is hooked into Booking.com don't make a mistake and let trevago send you to booking.com go to Hotel.com which is more professional. I had to go to American Express customer serviced to complain and they gave a dead line for explanation. They had no explanation for crappy service and had to repay me.

When will my reservation be charged?

It depends on the hotel some don't charge until you arrive at hotel more will charge your card straight away check your booking it should tell you there

Hi we have had to cacel a break booked with yourselves do we get a refund thanks

It is about time to stop giving credit card details to make a booking, they should not ask people to expose their details un-crypted. A booking is just a booking it should NOT require any kind of commitment or payment in advance.

How can i remove review in my hotel website

You can't. That's the whole idea. You provide a service, and your customers get to give their review of your place and your services.

What does it mean if the hotel does not offer "pay later". will i be charged right away if i book?

Yes. You pay the ENTIRE AMOUNT at the time if booking. The reservation is subject to the sites terms regarding cancellations & changes, so read these terms carefully before hitting the pay button. IMPORTANT: As a word to the wise, do not ever use your debit card, check, wire transfer, certified check or cash to pay. Always use a major credit card (I like American Express) so if there is ever a serious problem with the hotel, or the reservation in general, you can file a complaint with your credit card company to reverse the charge. If you pay by other debit card, they take the money out of your bank account immediately. It is like cash and you're going to have very little recourse or leverage to get your money back. Hope this advise helps.

Can’t see your question? Ask to get answers from the Booking.com staff and other customers.

WASHINGTON — Booking flights with airline points is a popular way to save some cash especially for avid travelers like Cameron Greene.

“I’ve been a Delta medallion flyer since I was, honestly since I was eight years old,” she said.

Greene is a travel agent and influencer and so far, she’s been to 76 countries. She relies on reward programs with Delta, United and American Airlines.

But she said recently, there’s been a shift.

“The airline programs have actually gotten worse,” said Greene. “Where they’re not recognizing their most loyal customers and honoring their business customers.”

Because of passenger complaints, the Department of Transportation and the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau are now examining the fairness and transparency of these reward programs.

“We want to make sure that every family is getting what’s promised and that we really have a fair transparent and competitive market,” said Rohit Chopra, director of the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

“How we can make sure companies are being straightforward about what people will get from these frequent flyer miles or loyalty programs when they sign up, and whether people are actually getting the deal they were promised,” said Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Department of Transportation

Officials say many reward credit cards have higher annual fees and companies often charge you higher interest rates on reward cards too.

Smaller credit unions say they offer much lower rates but limited rewards because it’s tough to compete.

“The larger institutions can do things much cheaper, more effectively and advertising budget if you watch TV you see a credit card commercial,” said Andrew Grimm, president and CEO, Apple Federal Credit Union.

But Airlines for America , which represents major U.S. carriers, argues there is competition.

“Airline loyalty programs are widely popular, voluntary programs that consumers value because they accumulate rewards toward travel when they make everyday purchases. There is fierce competition within the industry for both customer and credit card loyalty, and consumers have the power of choice when picking a carrier for air travel or a credit card for spending, with a wide range of options, to pick what best fits their needs,” said an Airlines for America spokesperson in a written statement.

In a recent survey, the organization found nearly one out of every four U.S. households has an airline credit card.

Some airlines are also trying to make their points systems easier to understand.

“We wanted to make it clear that if i show you that you Mr. [Transportation] Secretary have 15,000 points that equals $150 you will see that on all of our communications,” said Scott DeAngelo, executive vice president at Allegiant Air.

As for travelers like Greene, she believes customers should be rewarded for the miles they fly each year.

“Like I flew more miles than you I should be rewarded for my amount of miles that I flew for that year,” said Greens. “That’s telling you who is flying long distances, that is telling you who is really loyal in those situations.

I have used Booking.com for some time…

All I want is to cancel the other hotel fee cause it's been purchased twice 4183488552

When it comes to Expedia prices

When it comes to expedia travel insurance, when it comes to the expedia cancellation policy, when it comes to the expedia loyalty program, when it comes to maximizing credit card points, the pros and cons of expedia recapped.

Frequent travelers likely know that there’s something better than a dream trip: a dream trip that you booked on a bargain.

The ways to save money on travel are plentiful. You can redeem hotels and airline points, or take advantage of last-minute travel deals, to name a few. And booking through third-party online travel agencies like Expedia can sometimes yield especially big savings.

Beyond just deals, Expedia has robust search filters that make finding your perfect vacation easy. It streamlines purchasing trip insurance , which can be especially important for travel these days. Plus, the Expedia Rewards program earns you points to pay for future bookings.

But booking through an OTA like Expedia is not without its drawbacks. Here's a look at some of those to help you weigh the pros and cons of booking travel through Expedia.

Video preview image

Pro: Expedia has frequent sales, last-minute travel deals and bundle discounts

Expedia deals are aplenty, whether it’s a bundling discount or a sale.

Bundling: A major component of booking travel on Expedia is the practice of bundling, where you can expect additional savings for booking more than one product (e.g., flight and hotel, or hotel and attraction ticket) in one transaction. For example, when we searched for a hotel and rental car in Miami, one five-day booking option included up to three free rental car days while another offered one free night.

A perk of booking travel through Expedia is that you select your hotel, airfare and car rental in separate steps in the process. This makes it easy to bookmark the page and compare the cost of these items on Expedia versus the cost on the company’s direct website.

Expedia payment plans: If you don’t want to pay for your whole trip at the time of booking, Expedia allows you to make smaller payments through Affirm, which is a service that offers short-term loans for online purchases. If approved by Affirm , you’ll be able to pay for your trip in monthly installments.

You can also check Expedia’s Deals page and Expedia’s Last-Minute Deals page . Both tend to offer an eclectic mix of travel deals, ranging from cheap motels in tiny towns to lavish resorts in major tourist destinations. We’ve spotted deals as high as 70% off.

» Learn more: How to find cheaper last-minute flights

Con: Booking direct is sometimes still cheaper than Expedia

Sure, Expedia sales and last-minute deals are nice, but that’s not to say that you can’t find other (sometimes better) deals for booking directly with the travel provider. Many offer their own exclusive deals — and they might save you even more than booking with online travel agencies. Compare prices across both Expedia and the specific company to ensure you’re getting the best price.

And sometimes the savings go beyond just the sticker price. For example, boutique hotel chain Ovolo Hotels offers generous amenities including free laundry, happy hour refreshments and a daily breakfast buffet — but only if you book directly with them.

Pro: You can purchase an Expedia travel insurance policy

Expedia partners with various insurance providers, depending on your individual booking, to offer trip protection.

F or flights: Expedia offers travel insurance protection options that cover flight cancellation, medical emergencies and other covered circumstances.

For hotels: Choose hotel booking protection to reimburse your stay in the case of cancellation.

For car rentals: You can add car rental damage protection for an extra per-day fee.

Coverage varies by plan, but you can typically expect reimbursement for some (or all) trip costs if your trip is impacted by covered reasons. Covered reasons typically include delays, loss, theft or damage to one’s baggage and personal belongings. You’re also typically reimbursed for covered medical expenses, including emergency evacuation if you get sick or injured during your trip.

But there are many limitations and exclusions, so read your policy’s fine print to understand what’s covered.

Expedia 24-hour cancellation

When you book a flight on Expedia, you can cancel for a full refund as long as you do so within 24 hours of booking. The U.S. Department of Transportation requires airlines to allow you to cancel a flight for a full refund if canceled within 24 hours of booking and it was booked seven days before departure.

Con: Outside travel insurance might be more comprehensive or cheaper (and sometimes free)

You can opt out of Expedia’s travel insurance and either be completely uninsured — or simply acquire your insurance elsewhere. And there are better travel insurance policies out there.

After a comprehensive review of dozens of plans that assessed factors including price and COVID-19 coverage, here are the best travel insurance policies .

What’s more, you might not even need to pay for travel insurance at all. Many credit cards offer travel insurance benefits if you paid for your trip with that card.

Pro: Expedia offers some fully refundable options

Because airlines, hotels and other travel services set their own individual policies on Expedia, change and cancellation policies can vary significantly. While it can be tricky to parse the policies for each individual property, use Expedia’s “fully refundable” search filter to limit potential bookings to those with flexible policies.

reviews for booking com flights

For straightforward requests, use the Expedia service page to make changes and get a refund. If you’re unable to get help through Expedia’s self-service tools, other ways to get in touch with Expedia include live chat, a dedicated Twitter account ( @expediahelp ) and a phone line.

Con: Most cancellation policies are bad, confusing or both

Because airlines are required to give full refunds if you cancel within 24 hours of booking, Expedia lets you change or cancel your flight reservation without fees within the same time period.

For everything else, good luck. Because each travel provider sets its own policies, navigating them can be a headache. In some cases, canceling through Expedia means you’ll have to chase after the hotel or activity provider to recoup the costs.

Additionally, prepare for cancellation fees (both Expedia’s own fees as well as fees from the service provider). That’s if you’re able to cancel at all. Some bookings through Expedia are nonrefundable altogether.

Pro: It’s great for commitment-phobes

The new Expedia Rewards program, One Key Rewards, lets you earn OneKeyCash for every booking you make on the platform (plus on Vrbo and Hotels.com), which can then be used like cash toward future trips. Not only that, but Expedia users can earn status, which includes benefits like exclusive members-only discounts and extra benefits at VIP Access properties (such as free breakfast or late checkout).

For travelers who don’t like to commit to one airline or hotel company, don’t travel that frequently, or who book travel that otherwise doesn’t have its own loyalty program (like a tour or vacation rental), Expedia makes it possible to still get rewarded.

» Learn more: The guide to One Key Rewards

Con: Most hotel and airline loyalty programs are far more rewarding

While the One Key Rewards program is fine, most travel loyalty programs tied to specific hotels or airlines are almost always more rewarding. For individual point values, most other currencies of airline and hotel points are worth far more than OneKeyCash, which nets you 2% back on cruise, hotel, activity and rental car bookings but only .2% on flights. Once it's in your account, you can use it to pay for bookings just like you would cash — though you’ll need enough OneKeyCash in your account to pay for an entire flight, not just part of it.

Additionally, holding specific airline or hotel elite status is typically more lucrative than the value of elite status on One Key Rewards as most perks extend to Expedia VIP Access properties only. That said, some elite members can enjoy up to 20% discounts on hotels and free price drop protection on flights, which is a plus.

As for how to use Expedia points, OneKeyCash can be redeemed on “pay now” bookings for participating purchases priced in U.S. dollars. You can use it to pay for part of a hotel booking, but you’ll have to have enough to pay for the full cost of a flight (including taxes and fees). And while you can’t transfer rewards, you can use your OneKeyCash to book travel for others.

But depending what status you’re able to reach with individual brand loyalty programs, you can likely expect better perks. So if you’re fine committing to one brand, you’re almost always better off striving to earn its status versus with One Key Rewards. But if you only stay for a night here or there or prefer to book based on location or price, it’s a way to earn a few more rewards.

Pro: Expedia counts as a travel purchase

Many travel rewards credit cards give you a higher rewards rate on travel purchases, and booking sites like Expedia typically count as travel spending. For example, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card earns 2 points per dollar on travel spending, compared with 1 point per dollar on most purchases.

Con: Travel credit cards are usually better for earning and redeeming rewards

If you’re loyal to a specific hotel or airline brand — or are open to pledging allegiance — credit cards aligned with those brands typically pay more on purchases directly from the brand partner. For example:

Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card

on American Express' website

Chase United Airlines Mileage Plus Credit Card

on Chase's website

Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card

• 2 miles per $1 spent on Delta purchases.

Terms apply.

• 2 miles per $1 spent on United purchases.

• 12 points per $1 spent on eligible Hilton purchases.

• 6 points per $1 spent at participating Marriott Bonvoy hotels.

• 1 mile per $1 spent.

• 3 points per $1 spent.

• 2 points per $1 spent.

Even general-purpose travel rewards cards that aren't tied to a specific airline or hotel chain will often reward you more handsomely for booking through their own portals than they would for going through a site like Expedia. Going back to the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card : As mentioned, it earns 2 points per dollar on most travel purchases — but 5 points per dollar on travel booked through the Chase portal . Among general-purpose travel cards:

Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card

• 5 miles per $1 on hotels and car rentals booked through Capital One Travel.

• 2 miles per $1 on other purchases.

• 5 points per $1 spent on travel booked through Chase.

• 10 points per $1 spent on hotels and rental cars booked through Chase.

• 5 points per $1 on air travel booked through Chase.

• 5 points per $1 spent on flights booked directly with airlines or with American Express Travel, on up to $500,000 spent per year.

• 5 points per $1 on prepaid hotels booked with American Express Travel.

• 2 miles per $1 spent.

• 1 point per $1 spent.

If you're considering booking with other online travel agencies like Priceline or Hotels.com, here are the best credit cards for online travel booking websites .

With the right deal, booking travel — including flights, hotels, cruises or car rentals — on Expedia could be worth it. It makes searching for travel relatively easy given the massive array of available listings, coupled with thoughtful search functionality to actually help you create your ideal itinerary.

But don’t automatically assume it’s a cheap way to book travel. Especially given the complicated cancellation policies, it might become among the most expensive, should an uninsured trip need to be canceled.

Qatar Airways Privilege Club: How to earn and redeem Avios, elite status and more

Ben Smithson

  • Qatar Airways' Privilege Club loyalty program uses Avios as its currency.
  • As a Oneworld member, you can earn Privilege Club elite status flying Qatar Airways or partner airlines such as American Airlines, Alaska Airlines and British Airways.
  • Avios are easy to earn by spending on cobranded credit cards, transferring credit card points and traveling. You can redeem Avios for Qatar's famous Qsuite business-class product.

Qatar Airways is one of the world's top airlines, with an excellent business-class product and great lounges at its hub in Doha's Hamad International Airport (DOH). The airline has a huge route network as well, with routes to major U.S. airports like Chicago's O'Hare International Airport (ORD), Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and Philadelphia International Airport (PHL).

The Oneworld member has its own loyalty program called Qatar Airways Privilege Club and uses the popular currency Avios . With this loyalty program, you can earn and redeem Avios when flying Qatar Airways and its Oneworld partners. Plus, it has three elite status levels that give frequent flyers special privileges like entry to lounges and access to preferred seating.

New to the carrier's Privilege Club? You're in the right place. Here is everything you need to know about the program.

What are Avios?

reviews for booking com flights

Avios are the currency used by the following loyalty programs:

  • British Airways Executive Club
  • Iberia Plus
  • Aer Lingus AerClub
  • Qatar Airways Privilege Club
  • Finnair Plus

Avios can be transferred between any of these programs at a ratio of 1:1, so each Avios is theoretically worth the same in each program. However, there are different ways in which Avios can be redeemed in each program, meaning the savvy reader can achieve different values depending on which program they are used in ... and how.

This guide focuses on Avios earned and redeemed through the Qatar Airways Privilege Club program.

Qatar Airways elite status

Qatar Airways has three elite status tiers beyond the entry-level Burgundy level: Silver, Gold and Platinum. You can qualify for these tiers by earning a certain number of Qpoints by flying with Qatar Airways and its partners (these are separate from Avios and only used to count toward your status). To view how many Qpoints you'll earn with each flight, use Qatar Airways' My Calculator .

Below is a look at how many Qpoints you'll need to qualify for each tier. You must earn these within a single 12-month period. Once you've qualified for Silver, you can upgrade by earning more points within 12 months. This is considered your "renewal date."

Fewer Qpoints are required to renew your elite status. You can either earn a smaller number of Qpoints in 12 months or a higher number in 24 months — each calculated from your renewal date.

If you fail to meet renewal requirements, you'll drop to the tier you did qualify for.

Additionally, you must earn at least 20% of your Qpoints on flights marketed or operated by Qatar Airways to qualify. Alternatively, you can fly four Qatar Airways segments on 12-month renewals or eight Qatar Airways segments on 24-month renewals to meet this requirement.

Elite status benefits

Silver (Oneworld Ruby) is Qatar's lowest elite status tier and includes the following benefits:

  • Discounted seat reservation
  • 50% bonus Avios
  • Family member bonus
  • Lounge access (no guests)
  • Two guest lounge passes
  • Free checked baggage
  • Priority boarding and check-in
  • Personalized bag tags
  • Priority waitlisting

Gold status (Oneworld Sapphire) includes all Silver benefits plus the following perks:

  • Preferred seating
  • Guaranteed economy awards
  • 75% bonus Avios
  • 5% discount on redemptions
  • Lounge access (one guest)
  • Four guest lounge passes
  • Priority baggage handling
  • Extra baggage
  • Priority phone support
  • Al Maha Gold service

Qatar's top-tier Platinum elite status is the equivalent of the valuable Oneworld Emerald status. This tier includes all Gold status benefits plus the following perks:

  • 100% bonus Avios
  • Lounge access (two guests)
  • Five guest lounge passes

The Qatar Airways Privilege Club Visa Infinite Credit Card, which comes with a $499 annual fee, offers:

  • A welcome offer of up to 50,000 Avios — 25,000 Avios after the first transaction and an additional 25,000 Avios and 150 Qpoints after you spend $5,000 in the first 90 days — which is more than 40% lower than the current welcome bonuses on Chase's three Avios-earning credit cards
  • 5 Avios per dollar spent on Qatar Airways purchases, 3 Avios per dollar spent on restaurant purchases and 1 Avios per dollar spent on all other purchases
  • 2 Qpoints for every 1,500 Avios earned
  • One year of complimentary Qatar Airways Privilege Club Gold status
  • Visa Infinite benefits like concierge services, access to the Luxury Hotel Collection and rental car privileges

The information for the Qatar Airways Privilege Club Visa Infinite and Signature cards has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

With this card, you can effectively buy Gold status with the program for $499 annually. Also, with the 150 Qpoints in the welcome offer, you'll be 25% of the way to Platinum status.

The Qatar Airways Privilege Club Visa Signature Credit Card has a $99 annual fee and comes with:

  • A welcome offer of up to 40,000 Avios — 20,000 Avios after the first transaction and an additional 20,000 Avios after you spend $3,000 in the first 90 days
  • 4 Avios per dollar spent on Qatar Airways purchases, 2 Avios per dollar spent on restaurant purchases and 1 Avios per dollar spent on all other purchases
  • 2 Qpoints for every 2,000 Avios earned
  • Automatic Silver status with Qatar Airways Privilege Club

Citi ThankYou Rewards

Another easy way for U.S. travelers to earn Qatar Avios is by transferring Citi ThankYou Rewards points to Privilege Club. Points transfer to Qatar at a 1:1 ratio, though transfers usually take around two days to process .

Note that if you're still holding on to the Citi Prestige® Card , which is no longer open to new applicants, you can transfer ThankYou Rewards points to Privilege Club.

That said, as with Chase Ultimate Rewards points, you can combine your Citi ThankYou Rewards points into a single account for select products, allowing you to effectively "convert" your fixed-value earnings from cards like the Citi Rewards+® Card (see rates and fees ) and the Citi Double Cash® Card (see rates and fees ) into fully transferable ThankYou points.

The information for the Citi Prestige has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Transfer from other Avios programs

You can also transfer Avios from British Airways Executive Club, Iberia Plus or Aer Lingus AerClub at a 1:1 rate in any direction.

The following cards all currently offer strong welcome bonuses that you could easily convert to Avios in these three programs (and then transfer to Privilege Club):

  • American Express® Gold Card : Earn 60,000 Membership Rewards points after you spend $6,000 on purchases in the first six months of account opening.
  • The Platinum Card® from American Express : Earn 80,000 Membership Rewards points after you spend $8,000 on purchases within the first six months of card membership. Check to see if you're targeted for a higher welcome offer through CardMatch (offer subject to change at any time). Terms apply.
  • Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card : Earn 75,000 bonus miles after you spend $4,000 on purchases within the first three months from account opening.
  • Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card : Earn 75,000 bonus miles after you spend $4,000 on purchases within the first three months from account opening.
  • Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card : Earn 75,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.
  • Chase Sapphire Reserve® : Earn 75,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.
  • Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card : Earn 100,000 bonus points after you spend $8,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.

Transfer from Marriott Bonvoy

Alternatively, you can transfer Marriott Bonvoy points to Qatar Airways Privilege Club at a 3:1 ratio. As an added perk, you'll get a 5,000-Avios bonus when you transfer 60,000 points. This means transferring 60,000 points nets you 25,000 Privilege Club Avios.

Earn Avios by flying Qatar Airways

You can also earn Avios when taking paid Qatar-operated flights around the world. The number of Avios you earn depends on your cabin and ticketed fare class. Qatar Airways Privilege Club still awards Avios based on the distance flown, but remember that most discounted fare classes will earn much lower than higher-tier fares.

Here's a table that details how you'll accrue Avios on Qatar flights.

Earn Avios with program partners

You can also earn Qatar Avios for flights on any of the following Oneworld airlines:

  • Alaska Airlines
  • American Airlines
  • British Airways
  • Cathay Pacific
  • Iberia, including Iberia Express and Air Nostrum
  • Japan Airlines
  • Malaysia Airlines
  • Qantas, including QantasLink and Jetconnect
  • Royal Air Maroc
  • Royal Jordanian Airlines
  • S7 Airlines (currently suspended)
  • SriLankan Airlines

Privilege Club also partners with the following airlines outside of Oneworld:

  • Bangkok Airways
  • Middle East Airlines
  • Oman Air ( joining the Oneworld alliance in 2024 )
  • Virgin Australia

Flights on these airlines follow Qatar Airways' earning scheme, but you can use the calculator for more details.

Redeeming Qatar Airways Privilege Club Avios

reviews for booking com flights

Booking Qatar Airways flights with Avios

Qatar Airways has what is widely considered one of the world's best business-class products with its award-winning Qsuite product. Even the carrier's economy product is a solid option. Here are the prices for popular one-way itineraries per person on any date (there is now peak and off-peak pricing).

Availability can be limited, especially in premium cabins, so the further in advance you can book, the more likely you are to find one or more seats on the dates you need.

Upgrading Qatar Airways flights with Avios

You can also use your Qatar Avios to upgrade paid flights operated by the airline. You must use the airline's calculator to find the cost of upgrading a specific flight based on your route and fare class.

For example, you can upgrade the cheapest economy-class ticket from the East Coast to Doha to a business-class seat for 55,000 Avios one-way. This isn't much cheaper than booking an award ticket, so we recommend steering clear of this option unless you have booked an extremely cheap cash fare.

reviews for booking com flights

Additionally, you need to find available upgrade space in order to upgrade your ticket. You can do this by calling the airline or attempting to upgrade a ticket online.

Booking partner flights with Avios

Qatar has lowered the award prices for many partner-operated flights, bringing them in line with other Avios programs. Here's the award chart for all Privilege Club partner redemptions, including Oneworld and other carriers:

The award chart closely resembles British Airways' partner award chart, meaning both programs have the same sweet spots :

  • Short-haul redemptions on American Airlines or Alaska Airlines start at just 6,000 Avios each way, with no peak or off-peak pricing.
  • American's flagship 777-300ER operates some flights between JFK and Miami International Airport (MIA), a 1,089-mile journey. You could book a business-class award on this flight for only 16,500 Avios, which is a great deal.
  • Fly from major West Coast cities to the Hawaiian Islands for just 13,000 Avios on American Airlines or Alaska Airlines.

Unfortunately, ticketing these awards is challenging. Unless you're redeeming your Qatar Avios for an American Airlines or a British Airways flight, you won't be able to book your partner redemption on Qatar's website. To redeem your Qatar Avios on a partner flight, you can call Qatar Airways Privilege Club at 800-988-6128. Know, though, that the call center is only open during working hours on weekdays.

You can also see flight partner schedules by selecting "Book my award flight" on Qatar's website . You can then submit a request to book a partner flight, and a Qatar agent will process your reservation if there's award space. We don't recommend this option since award space can rapidly change. Instead, we suggest transferring Avios to British Airways so you have more partner flight options you can book online.

Related: The best ways to redeem British Airways Avios

Other redemption options

You can also use your Qatar Avios for merchandise, duty-free items, hotel stays and more. We generally recommend staying away from these types of redemptions, as they'll almost always give you less value than a free flight, often dropping the value to half a cent per Avios (or less).

Bottom line

Qatar Airways has fabulous products on the ground and in the air. If you have never flown long-haul business class, you can't go wrong with the world-famous Qsuite to Doha and beyond.

While the program previously flew under the radar due to some uncompetitive pricing and complex booking options, adopting the already popular Avios currency in 2022 has opened up new ways to easily earn and redeem Avios in the program.

The ability to easily transfer Avios between four airline loyalty programs (Finnair Plus members will be able to transfer Avios between accounts in spring 2024) makes the program much more attractive, especially as Privilege Club now has the same short-haul sweet spots that are so popular when redeeming Avios through the British Airways Executive Club program.

BE WARNED-booked with booking.com flights then after payment referred to their intermediary Go to Gate. 2 months later received email that airline had cancelled therefore requested refund on the 17.1.24.

Date of experience : 06 February 2024

Terrible, I had my flight cancelled by Citilink and changed to a time that was no longer convenient to me. I contacted the airline and asked for a flight refund and was told I must contact the travel agent. I did not expect I would be on the phone for the best part of two hours back and forth between both the airline and booking.com who kept saying “contact the airline” and “contact the travel agent”. It looks at this stage that the flight in question which is two days away will not be getting refunded and I will be out of pocket. Booking.Com are a bunch of robbing thieves. I expected so much better…
