Scholastic Book Fairs, Explained: How They Work and Who Benefits

about book fair

Scholastic is widely known for its annual book fairs at thousands of schools across the country, which evoke excitement in children, and nostalgic memories for adults.

The children’s book publisher made headlines this week after announcing that it was making certain books about LGBTQ+ characters, civil rights leaders, and Black fictional characters optional for elementary schools hosting book fairs this year.

Update: Scholastic has reversed its decision to allow schools to exclude a collection of books about LGBTQ+ characters and Black characters when hosting its book fairs. Read more.

Dozens of Scholastic book fairs are ongoing in schools across the country this fall. Annually, the publisher provides books to about 120,000 book fairs, according to Scholastic’s website.

Here’s what you need to know about what students can find at book fairs, who organizes them, who selects the books for them, and more.

What can students find at school book fairs?

Book fairs are temporary pop ups with curated collections of books for students to buy. The events are predominantly for elementary and middle school students, and often feature a selection of books by a certain publisher, such as Scholastic, or books chosen by an independent bookstore vendor.

In addition to books, the fairs may also sell school supplies and book accessories. The size of a book fair varies depending on the school hosting it.

Who partners with schools for book fairs?

Scholastic is by far the most well-known book fair vendor, but there are other publishers, companies, and bookstores that also partner with schools to conduct fairs.

The vast majority of Scholastic book fairs serve elementary schools, said Ben Stone, a senior vice president of sales and strategy at the company. However, the publisher also organizes fairs for middle schools, K-6, and K-8 grade ranges. Scholastic does not organize book fairs for high school students.

Who organizes book fairs at schools?

About 70 percent of Scholastic’s book fairs are organized at the school level by a librarian, according to Scholastic. The librarian coordinates with someone at Scholastic to coordinate the selection of books, the delivery of all the necessary items needed to run the fair, and the profit sharing after the fair.

About 30 percent of Scholastic book fairs are organized and operated by parent volunteers from a parent-teacher association, Stone said.

Barbara Johnson, a school librarian from Connecticut and past president of the Connecticut Association of School Librarians, says that when anyone who isn’t a certified librarian runs a book fair, it shouldn’t be left up to them to make sure that the books in the fair are diverse and represent all students.

“Many districts like mine have [PTA] members who are running fairs, who just rely on the book fair vendors to provide them with books that represent students or books that will be attractive or engaging to their students,” Johnson said.

“They’re just relying on a company to do the right thing, and to help guide them and give them books that are appropriate for their patrons.”

Who selects the books featured in a fair and how?

For Scholastic book fairs, schools receive between 250 to 500 unique titles, depending on school size, Stone said. Schools do get some choice between curated collections, but can’t control which unique titles they’ll receive before the fair based on stock availability, he said.

In addition to the regular bookshelves schools receive for the fair curated by Scholastic, the publisher offers about 13 optional add-on collections that book fair hosts can pick from, including collections for Spanish language books, discounted books, and books about religion, Stone said.

Librarians can opt in for those collections, much like the “Share Every Voice, Celebrate Every Voice” collection that features stories about LGBTQ+ people and minorities that Scholastic made optional this year.

“We know what we intend to send each school based on grade range and fair type, but we’re not able to say with certainty or share with the school in advance,” Stone said.

In its fall of 2023 preview, Scholastic includes a disclaimer that while it includes most of the books that will be available, “Some books may not be available and there may be some books—not in this preview—sent as substitutes.”

Librarians don’t know the exact titles that will be included in a fair, said Debby Vandersande, a librarian from Fairfax County in Virginia who has been hosting Scholastic book fairs for more than a decade.

While schools cannot request for specific books to be included ahead of time, if the host school wants a specific title while the fair is ongoing, they can ask for it by filling out a form online as part of a restock request—which is a way for schools to get additional products that were not originally included, Stone said.

What is the benefit of having book fairs at schools?

Book fairs help engage students in recreational reading, which research has shown can improve reading scores, Stone said.

“The fair is all about the joy of discovery, and the power of choice for the students,” he said.

“To find books that excite them about reading, that engage them in reading with the belief that that will aid in their reading of curriculum materials.”

The books in a Scholastic book fair are typically not related directly to the school curriculum, he said.

The fairs are also meant to inspire a love of reading among children, who get a chance to select the books they want to read based on their interests, Stone said.

“There is a lot of research that shows that when a child has the opportunity to pick the books that they read, they’re much more likely to enjoy reading, to read more often, and to continue to be lifelong readers,” he said.

Do schools make money from book fairs?

Schools make some profit from the sale of books at fairs, which can be a financial incentive or a fundraiser for the school.

The fair vendor, such as Scholastic, typically owns the registers at a book fair. At Scholastic fairs, schools can choose between taking 25 percent of the total fair revenue in dollars, or 50 percent of revenue in Scholastic dollars, which is internal currency districts can use to purchase library and curricular materials, stationery, library shelving and furniture, whiteboards, and other educational supplies the publisher offers.

The total fair revenue can vary widely, from about $1,200 in small schools to $100,000 in large ones, Stone said. On average, a Scholastic book fair tends to make $6,000, which makes the average school profit $1,500 or 3,000 Scholastic dollars, Stone said. In total, schools earn about $200 million through book fairs each year, Stone said.

Are book fairs affordable?

Not all schools can afford to host book fairs, and not all students can afford to buy books even if their school has a fair, according to Stone and four librarians Education Week spoke with.

The disparities in access make the system of book fairs unfair, Johnson, the librarian from Connecticut, said.

“I think the system of the book fair in general is kind of missing the boat on how to get books into the hands of kids,” she said.

This year, Scholastic has increased the number of books that are $5 and below by 50 percent, Stone said. For schools with high numbers of economically disadvantaged students, there’s an extended selection schools can request, with every book costing up to $5.

Schools can also use part of the revenue they earn from fairs to build a fund to help children who don’t have money to shop at the fair, Stone said. Finally, Scholastic can help hosts find local fair sponsors so the fair can be free for all students. Last year, the publisher ran about 750 sponsored book fairs.

“We believe that there should be an equitable and accessible experience for absolutely every child regardless of income,” said Anne Sparkman, senior vice president of corporate communications at Scholastic.

What is a Book Fair for?

Find out the details of this literary event that makes its mark on the cultural landscape every year., acción cultural española, ac/e.

Spain Pavillon at Frankfurt Book Fair 2022 (2022-10-22) Acción Cultural Española, AC/E

A book fair is a celebration at which authors, readers, and booksellers have the opportunity to meet in a space where literature takes center stage: books are signed, talks are given, news is promoted... and occasionally business is done.

These fairs are spaces for the promotion of reading, of bibliodiversity (a term that refers to the necessary diversity of voices promoted, above all through small independent publishers), and places where you can discover the trends in the sector, with meetings between authors and their readers, professional training... And let's not forget that they are also events that move millions of euros within the industry.

A little bit of background

The origins of book fairs can be found in Germany, in Frankfurt and then in Leipzig. In 1462, the first book fair was held in Frankfurt. The rapid influence of the printing press on these fairs is explained by the proximity of Mainz, where Gutenberg worked.

Three types of fair

There are different fair models, each with its own unique features: the popular, the professional, and the combined. Professional fairs are usually held in closed spaces, or large pavilions, and are mainly tailored to the book industry and the professional field.

Spain Pavillion Foyer at Frankfurt Book Fair 2022 (2022-10-22) Acción Cultural Española, AC/E

Popular ones have a more commercial character and are open to the general public, so they are usually held in open spaces where booksellers and publishers offer their books in booths. Often, both types are present in the same space in a combined model.

Professional fairs: Frankfurt Book Fair

This is the largest publishing and professional fair in the world. It is attended by exhibitors from all five continents and it has the highest turnover and audience. Fact: about 80% of copyright agreements are negotiated at the Frankfurt fair.

Spanish Editors Federation FGEE (2022-10-19) Acción Cultural Española, AC/E

The largest deals in the editing world are closed here, many negotiations become reality, and the big trends in the sector are set. Spain's largest trade fair is LIBER, which alternates between Madrid and Barcelona.

Madrid Book Fair Acción Cultural Española, AC/E

Popular fairs: Madrid Book Fair

This is held in the Spanish capital annually during the months of May and June. With a fair format aimed at the general public, its purpose is to promote books, reading, and the activities of entities that are dedicated to publishing, distributing, or selling books to the public.

Paseo de Gracia in Sant Jordi (2022-04-23) Acción Cultural Española, AC/E

Along with Sant Jordi's Day, celebrated in Catalonia every April 23, when it is customary to give away books and roses, these are the two most prominent popular literary events in Spain. Between them, they represent a large part of the annual book turnover in Spain.

36th annual Guadalajara International Book Fair (2022-12-01) Acción Cultural Española, AC/E

Combined model: Guadalajara International Book Fair

This is considered the largest gathering in the Spanish-speaking publishing world. Founded in 1987, with a combined model, it currently hosts more than 800,000 attendees and over 2,400 publishers from more than 45 countries. It is by far the most visited book fair.

"Contemporary Spanish literature 400 years after the death of Cervantes" at the FIL Guadalajara (2016-11-01) Acción Cultural Española, AC/E

Created with the idea of broadening the horizons of Spanish-language books and helping them remain the main educational and cultural vehicle in modern society, the IBF has become a social, political, and cultural reference within the world of books.

Elvira Sastre at the Buenos Aires International Book Fair (2023) Acción Cultural Española, AC/E

In Latin America, aside from the Guadalajara International Book Fair, the Buenos Aires International Book Fair, the somewhat smaller Bogotá International Book Fair (FILBo) and the Lima International Book Fair (FIL LIMA) are all very significant.

Other book fairs

Niches are emerging in the world of books, with specific fairs tailored to specific specializations. The Bologna Children's Book Fair or the Shanghai International Children's Book Fair, specializing in children's literature, or the various Conventions and Comic-Cons focused on the ninth art, such as the Barcelona Comic Fair, are the best examples.

Ttukunak at the Spain Pavillion in the Franckfurt Book Fair 2022 (2022-10-22) Acción Cultural Española, AC/E

Guest of honor: a window to the world

Every time they are held, most fairs highlight a country or region as their guest of honor. The main aim is to show the highlights of the literary and cultural output of that country or region. Writers, publishers, and artists become the spokespeople for their culture.

Exhibition “50 Photographs with a Story” (2022-10-19) Acción Cultural Española, AC/E

In addition, this promotes the cultural wealth that a given country or region wants to export. This is an international showcase where they can promote the best of their culture: dance, theater, music, gastronomy, cinema, etc.

Opening Ceremony, Frankfurt Book Fair 2022 (2022-10-18) Acción Cultural Española, AC/E

The 2022 Frankfurt Book Fair had Spain as a guest country, 31 years after having it for the first time. Argentina was honored in 2010. The Guadalajara Book Fair will have Spain as its guest of honor in 2024, after having Peru in 2021.

Exhibition "HOW(EVER)" Art Book Festival in Portikus (2022-10-19) Acción Cultural Española, AC/E

Translation grants: linguistic basis for a cultural exchange

These are one of the main tools used to promote the works and authors that are part of the cultural heritage of a country. When a country is the guest of honor at a fair, this is one of the mechanisms put in place.

In Spain, the Ministry of Culture has its own translation assistance for works originally written in any official language of the State.

The Ramón Llull Institute does the same for works in Catalan, the Xunta de Galicia for works in Galician, and Etxepare Euskal Institutua for works in Basque.

To mark the occasion of Spain being designated as guest of honor at the Frankfurt fair, in 2019 Acción Cultural Española launched a new translation grant program in five languages: German, English, French, Italian, and Dutch, with four different lines of support.

Three aimed at foreign publishers (translation of complete works, anthologies, and support for the illustration of translated works) and the translation of fragments, aimed at Spanish publishers and agents to prepare dossiers that help with the sale of rights abroad.

While writing and reading are usually solitary activities, the TCBF is a way to celebrate writing in community and acknowledge the social value of writing as an art form. In 2016, Ross Welford’s first book for children, “Time Travelling with a Hamster” became an instant bestseller, won several awards and was shortlisted for countless others. It propelled him to the forefront of the highly competitive world of children’s publishing. He has published a book every year since, and his work features prominently in school libraries and reading programmes both in the UK and abroad. Ross’s books are enjoyed equally by boys and girls of nine and older - and many adults too! They have been translated into sixteen languages, including Hebrew, Chinese and Korean. Ross talks enthusiastically and engagingly on the challenges and rewards of becoming a new author in middle age, on discovering “the muse”, and how pretty much anybody can increase their chances of writing a successful book by following some simple advice. Ross has a lifelong interest in magic - the conjuring type, not the mystical type - and enjoys devising and performing tricks which illustrate the magical ideas in his stories. He was a street magician in his teens, performing his act (with the aid of A-level French) in Paris and Nice. In 2019 he was admitted to the prestigious Magic Circle. An early career in magazine journalism led to work in television in the 1990s and 2000’s. He produced popular shows such as Channel 4’s The Big Breakfast, and ITV’s This Morning with Richard Madeley and Judy Finnegan. His magical knowledge garnered him work on Channel 4’s Magick and Sky TV’s long-running Max Magic. Ross’s books have been described as “awesome” (the Observer), “gripping” (The Guardian) and “intelligent, well-crafted and impressive” (The Sunday Times). They are, however, hard to classify. Part science-fiction, part fantasy, his stories typically take a “magical” idea (invisibility say, or immortality) and allow it to play out in a contemporary setting. When not writing, Ross tours schools and literary festivals in the UK and abroad, inspiring a love of reading and writing. He lives in London with his wife, teenage children and border collie.

about book fair

Beneath a sky where stars whispered tales of old, a voyager sailed the endless sea, seeking the Mythical Muse. This majestic guardian of lore, a sentinel of the deep, challenged all who sought its wisdom: "What can quench thirst, shape shores, mirror the sky, yet carry tales across the world?"

With a spark of insight, the traveller called out, "A story". For just as water, it sustains, transforms, reflects, and connects across vast distances.

The Mythical Muse, its gaze deep as the ocean's heart, spoke with a voice that stirred the very currents of the sea. "Well met, storyteller. Let me be your muse, your beacon through the boundless oceans of imagination."

about book fair

In the heart of an enchanted oasis, the Twin Storytellers talked, their feathers ruffled in the gentle breeze. "Clearly, the past holds the best tales," squawked the elder, leaves rustling indignantly.

"Nonsense! The future is where true stories blossom," chirped the younger, tales of tomorrow fluttering like fresh Ghaf leaves.

And on and on they spoke, trying to find the best answer. It is said that to this day they ask passers by what they think holds the best stories.

about book fair

In the whispering sands, a boy found an oasis, watched over by the grand Wingweaver. "What is a treasure that grows with sharing?" it asked. The boy, eyes alight, answered, "A book."

With a gentle rustle of feathers, the Wingweaver stepped aside, inviting him into a realm where stories blossomed, endless, and alive.

Oops: Kristi Noem’s New Book Includes a Made-Up Story About Meeting Kim Jong Un

about book fair

By Bess Levin

Image may contain Electrical Device Microphone Crowd Person Adult Audience and Speech

As you’ve probably heard by now, South Dakota governor Kristi Noem wrote a book that includes a vivid account of killing a 14-month-old dog named Cricket, which she has spent the last week insisting is not as bad as it sounds. And now she has two more anecdotes to defend, but for an entirely different reason: because they appear to be false.

Politico reports that in Noem’s book, No Going Back, she claims that when she was serving as a low-ranking congresswoman, she met with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un, writing, “Through my tenure on the House Armed Services Committee, I had the chance to travel to many countries to meet with world leaders. I remember when I met with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un. I’m sure he underestimated me, having no clue about my experience staring down little tyrants (I’d been a children’s pastor, after all).” In fact, Politico reports that Noem never actually met with Un, and you don’t just have to take the “ fake news ” media’s word for it. A spokesman for Noem basically admitted as much, telling Politico, “We’ve been made aware that the publisher will be addressing conflated world leaders’ names in the book before it is released.”

And that’s not the only story being called into question. Noem also claims that in 2021, former ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley called to offer mentorship, and then threatened her. According to Politico, Noem recounts telling an aide, “I’m pretty sure I was just threatened by Nikki Haley. It was clear that she wanted me to know that there was only room for one Republican woman in the spotlight.” Noem writes that “the message was clear. I’m the alpha female here, and you should know your place.”

Except, according to a spokesperson for Haley, the then ambassador implied no such thing. “Nikki has long called and written notes supporting other women when they go through challenging times,” Chaney Denton told Politico, also noting that Noem got the year of their phone call wrong. “She called Governor Noem in 2020 to encourage her when she was criticized for keeping her state open during COVID. How she would twist that into a threat is just plain weird.” Noem’s spokesman, Ian Fury, clarified to The Hill that the call took place in 2020 and the two met in 2021. Puppy Slayer Kristi Noem Is Probably Not Going to Be Donald Trump’s VP

By Vanity Fair

Puppy Slayer Kristi Noem Had a Very, Very Bad Day on Conservative TV

Why conservative media is suddenly turning on Kristi Noem

The Trump-era right wing has proved it will put up with plenty — until it decides you’re a political liability.

about book fair

When South Dakota Gov. Kristi L. Noem (R) sat down with Fox News last week amid a growing tempest over her killing her dog, Sean Hannity gave her the softballs-in-a-storm treatment often reserved for Donald Trump .

Hannity mused that perhaps there wasn’t really a difference between Noem shooting her own dog and having someone else euthanize it. He whatabout-ed by pointing to President Biden’s dog biting Secret Service agents, and posited about aggressive dogs: “It’s a sad thing to do, but at some point, doesn’t it become the responsible thing to?”

On Monday night, Newsmax host Eric Bolling offered an even more ham-handed attempt to explain it all away. He offered that perhaps the inclusion of the dog story in Noem’s book and an apparently false anecdote about meeting Kim Jong Un were the work of a “ liberal plant ” book editor. (Noem assured him that these were her own words.)

Something has happened since then, though. Conservative media has begun to turn on Noem, actually grilling her over her book and even ridiculing her.

Why? It’s pretty evident, and it’s the same reason conservative media and the GOP often turn on their own after putting up with plenty: She’s become a perceived liability for the brand.

By Tuesday morning, Newsmax was giving Noem a very different treatment . A host told Noem he didn’t think she was in the mix for Trump’s running mate anymore. (“Really? And why is that?” Noem responded.) He suggested Noem’s brazen effort to not actually deny meeting Kim would continue to haunt her.

Fox Business host Stuart Varney an hour later peppered Noem with five questions about whether Noem had broached the dog story with Trump. “Enough, Stuart,” an exasperated Noem responded. “This interview is ridiculous — what you are doing right now. So you need to stop.”

Noem suggested they talk about other issues, but Varney said they were out of time. “Oh, well of course we are,” Noem responded sarcastically.

By Tuesday night, with plenty of people asking why Noem was still talking, she finally canceled a Fox News interview (citing bad weather).

Clearly irked by the late cancellation, hosts Greg Gutfeld and Dana Perino proceeded to roast Noem by having Perino do the interview as the governor. They pointed to how Noem, despite insisting she had just learned of problems with her book, had previously recorded it as an audio book .

“I said some words that were written about me, and they were in a certain order of — they call them sentences,” deadpanned Perino-as-Noem. “And so I read those aloud. I don’t know if that means I’ve read the book.”

Perino-as-Noem added: “A little known fact: Another one of my dogs, his name was Ghost Writer. And I killed him this morning.”

It’s all quite an un-conservative media thing to do in the Trump era. Fox and Newsmax hosts have become studied at trying to explain away Republican controversy as the work of nefarious and censorious political opponents — as they initially tried to do with Noem. Why would they suddenly take issue with Noem telling an apparent falsehood about meeting with Kim, after years of ignoring Trump’s own penchant for saying oodles of bizarre and false things ? (Trump has uttered several false statements specifically about Kim , in fact.)

The answer is that conservative media and the GOP can ignore and try to cover for plenty — until they decide you’ve become a problem for the red team.

Former congressman Madison Cawthorn (R-N.C.) was accused of multiple instances of misconduct from his college days, told multiple falsehoods about his biography and faced repeated driving and gun infractions. But his party didn’t set about taking him out in a 2022 primary until he did a podcast interview in which he claimed a fellow lawmaker invited him to an “orgy” and accused Republicans in Washington of using cocaine . Republicans expressed concern that his problems were suddenly becoming their problems .

Indicted former congressman George Santos (R-N.Y.) was allowed to stick around for months despite his abundant legal and ethical problems and telling an even more remarkable number of lies about his own bio. A big apparent reason for his ultimate expulsion: Multiple vulnerable New York Republicans worried he would compromise their own reelections .

Further back, Republicans put up with former congressman Steve King’s (R-Iowa) controversial and even racist remarks for years before deciding to turn against him in 2019 for well-publicized remarks about white nationalism to the New York Times. An Iowa GOP strategist explained at the time that King had become “ the largest in-kind contribution Nancy Pelosi’s received . … It’s untenable for our candidates to have to answer for someone like that.”

And more recently, we’ve seen some on the right begin to cast a more skeptical eye on Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) . This is not because she has espoused bizarre conspiracy theories or unapologetically appeared at a conference hosted by a white nationalist , but because they appear to worry that her attempted ouster of House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and her Russia apologia are hurting the party’s 2024 prospects.

“She is dragging our brand down,” Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) said two weeks ago. “She — not the Democrats — are the biggest risk to us getting back to a majority.”

If you look closely at Noem’s increasingly contentious interviews on conservative media, you’ll see an acknowledgment that this is really about the same thing.

It seems to be sending a signal that it would be better for all involved for Noem to fade away, and certainly that Trump should think twice about putting her on the ticket.

“I’m not sure anybody supports you on shooting the dog,” Varney told Noem, adding: “We’ve been consumed with emails saying, ‘I won’t vote for this person. I won’t vote for Trump if he puts her in the vice-presidential spot.’ ”

Newsmax host Rob Finnerty had said an hour earlier: “I’m not deliberately trying to be adversarial. I just — Donald Trump winning in November is very important.”

I Survived the Great Alaska Earthquake, 1964

By Lauren Tarshis

It was 1964 in the brand-new state of Alaska, a vast land of staggering beauty and heart-stopping dangers. Eleven-year-old Jack had grown up living happily with his parents in an off-the-grid cabin, miles from their closest neighbors. Grizzlies and wolves outnumbered people, and dark winter days were 30 degrees below zero. Jack had always thought of himself as strong—Alaska tough. But then the most powerful earthquake in American history—the Good Friday Earthquake—struck.

The 9.2-magnitude quake lasted nearly five minutes, destroying downtown Anchorage and sending 30-foot tsunamis into coastal cities, wiping out entire communities. Its vibrations were felt around the world. In the end, it caused billions of dollars in damage and the death of 129 people.
