Description This program of study is designed for students who are interested in cultivating the strong writing skills that writing careers will require. The program includes courses conducive to transferring into a baccalaureate degree in English and/or Creative Writing, while keeping pathways open for baccalaureate degrees that emphasize more professional writing as well. Accordingly, the program is structured so students can (1) deepen their skills through scaffolded coursework and (2) broaden their experience with multiple genres and career pathways. The program culminates in a capstone course that familiarizes students with submission processes, transfer opportunities, and publishing/reading venues both in Rochester and around the country, preparing them for the next stage of their personal/professional lives as writers.

What to Know About Creative Writing Degrees

Many creative writing degree recipients pursue careers as authors while others work as copywriters or ghostwriters.

Tips on Creative Writing Degrees

Prospective writing students should think about their goals and figure out if a creative writing degree will help them achieve those goals.

Many people see something magical in a beautiful work of art, and artists of all kinds often take pride in their craftsmanship. Creative writers say they find fulfillment in the writing process.

"I believe that making art is a human need, and so to get to do that is amazing," says Andrea Lawlor, an author who this year received a Whiting Award – a national $50,000 prize that recognizes 10 excellent emerging authors each year – and who is also the Clara Willis Phillips Assistant Professor of English at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts.

"We all are seeing more and more of the way that writing can help us understand perspectives we don't share," says Lawlor, whose recent novel "Paul Takes the Form of a Mortal Girl" addresses the issue of gender identity.

"Writing can help us cope with hard situations," Lawlor says. "We can find people who we have something in common with even if there's nobody around us who shares our experience through writing. It's a really powerful tool for connection and social change and understanding."

Creative writing faculty, many of whom are acclaimed published authors, say that people are well-suited toward degrees in creative writing if they are highly verbal and enjoy expressing themselves.

"Creative imaginative types who have stories burning inside them and who gravitate toward stories and language might want to pursue a degree in creative writing," Jessica Bane Robert, who teaches Introduction to Creative Writing at Clark University in Massachusetts, wrote in an email. "Through formal study you will hone your voice, gain confidence, find a support system for what can otherwise be a lonely endeavor."

Why Creative Writing Matters and Reasons to Study It

Creative writers say a common misconception about their job is that their work is frivolous and impractical, but they emphasize that creative writing is an extremely effective way to convey messages that are hard to share in any other way.

Kelly Caldwell, dean of faculty at Gotham Writers Workshop in New York City, says prospective writing students are often discouraged from taking writing courses because of concerns about whether a writing life is somehow unattainable or "unrealistic."

Although creative writers are sometimes unable to financially support themselves entirely on the basis of their creative projects, Caldwell says, they often juggle that work with other types of jobs and lead successful careers.

She says that many students in her introductory creative writing class were previously forbidden by parents to study creative writing. "You have to give yourself permission for the simple reason that you want to do it," she suggests.

Creative writing faculty acknowledge that a formal academic credential in creative writing is not needed in order to get writing published. However, they suggest, creative writing programs help aspiring authors develop their writing skills and allow space and time to complete long-term writing projects.

Working writers often juggle multiple projects at once and sometimes have more than one gig, which can make it difficult to finish an especially ambitious undertaking such as a novel, a play for the screen or stage, or a well-assembled collection of poems, short stories or essays. Grants and fellowships for authors are often designed to ensure that those authors can afford to concentrate on their writing.

Samuel Ace, a published poet and a visiting lecturer in poetry at Mount Holyoke, says his goal is to show students how to write in an authentic way that conveys real feeling. "It helps students to become more direct, not to bury their thoughts under a cascade of academic language, to be more forthright," he says.

Tips on Choosing Between a Non-Degree or Degree-Based Creative Writing Program

Experts note that someone needs to be ready to get immersed in the writing process and devote significant time to writing projects before pursuing a creative writing degree. Prospective writing students should not sign up for a degree program until they have reached that sense of preparedness, warns Kim Todd, an associate professor at the University of Minnesota College of Liberal Arts and director of its creative writing program.

She says prospective writing students need to think about their personal goals and figure out if a creative writing degree will help them achieve those goals.

Aspiring writers who are not ready to invest in a creative writing degree program may want to sign up for a one-off writing class or begin participating in an informal writing workshop so they can test their level of interest in the field, Todd suggests.

How to Choose and Apply to a Creative Writing Program

In many cases, the most important component of an application to a writing program is the writing portfolio, writing program experts say. Prospective writing students need to think about which pieces of writing they include in their portfolio and need to be especially mindful about which item they put at the beginning of their portfolio. They should have a trusted mentor critique the portfolio before they submit it, experts suggest.

Because creative writing often involves self-expression, it is important for aspiring writing students to find a program where they feel comfortable expressing their true identity.

This is particularly pertinent to aspiring authors who are members of minority groups, including people of color or LGBTQ individuals, says Lawlor, who identifies as queer, transgender and nonbinary.

How to Use a Creative Writing Degree

Creative writing program professors and alumni say creative writing programs cultivate a variety of in-demand skills, including the ability to communicate effectively.

"While yes, many creative writers are idealists and dreamers, these are also typically highly flexible and competent people with a range of personal strengths. And a good creative writing program helps them understand their particular strengths and marketability and translate these for potential employers, alongside the more traditional craft development work," Melissa Ridley Elmes, an assistant professor of English at Lindenwood University in Missouri, wrote in an email.

Elmes – an author who writes poetry, fiction and nonfiction – says creative writing programs force students to develop personal discipline because they have to consistently produce a significant amount of writing. In addition, participating in writing workshops requires writing students "to give and receive constructive feedback," Elmes says.

Cindy Childress, who has a Ph.D. in English from the University of Louisiana—Lafayatte and did a creative writing dissertation where she submitted poetry, says creative writing grads are well-equipped for good-paying positions as advertising and marketing copywriters, speechwriters, grant writers and ghostwriters.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual compensation for writers and authors was $63,200 as of May 2019.

"I think the Internet, and writing communities online and in social media, have been very helpful for debunking the idea that if you publish a New York Times Bestseller you will have 'made it' and can quit your day job and write full time," Elmes explains. "Unless you are independently wealthy, the odds are very much against you in this regard."

Childress emphasizes that creative writing degree recipients have "skills that are absolutely transferable to the real world." For example, the same storytelling techniques that copywriters use to shape public perceptions about a commercial brand are often taught in introductory creative writing courses, she says. The ability to tell a good story does not necessarily come easily to people who haven't been trained on how to do it, she explains.

Childress says she was able to translate her creative writing education into a lucrative career and start her own ghostwriting and book editing company, where she earns a six-figure salary. She says her background in poetry taught her how to be pithy.

"Anything that we want to write nowadays, particularly for social media, is going to have to be immediately understood, so there is a sense of immediacy," she says."The language has to be crisp and direct and exact, and really those are exactly the same kind of ways you would describe a successful poem."

The Associate of Arts in creative writing is a two-year degree program that builds on students’ love for literature and writing by preparing them for a variety of writing-based careers. In addition to courses in poetry, fiction writing and creative nonfiction, the program offers opportunities for students to workshop their writing in small groups and to gain editing experience by working on a quarterly national magazine.

What to Expect

As a student in Trevecca’s Associate of Arts in creative writing program, you’ll enjoy engaging academic courses built for those who are passionate about literature and writing. This 60-hour degree can typically be completed in just two years, preparing you to enter a four-year degree program or to move into a variety of writing-based careers.

The curriculum consists of both liberal arts core classes and two courses in poetry writing, two in fiction writing and one in the composition of creative nonfiction. Beyond being exposed to both canonical and contemporary writers, you’ll gain valuable and practical tips for beginning and sustaining a career in writing. Trevecca also hosts creative writing workshops where students write and revise original work in peer groups that are both challenging and supportive.

If you are interested in gaining additional editing experience, you’ll have the opportunity to serve on the editorial staff of the Cumberland River Review , a digital, literary quarterly featuring new work by nationally recognized writers. You’ll also have opportunities to attend on-campus readings and author events sponsored by the English department.

Emphasizes intellectual and analytical reasoning through reading and writing assignments. Includes instruction in library and research technologies and the writing of a research project.

Designed to engage students in dialogue with a variety of Western and Non-Western world literature, past and present. ENG 2000 is a recommended prerequisite for all upper-level literature courses.

Students will write and critique original poems in a workshop environment. Contemporary poets will be studied as models.

Students will write and critique original short stories in a workshop environment. Contemporary writers will be studied as models.

A one-credit-hour, applied course wherein students serve as editors of The Cumberland River Review, Trevecca's national literary magazine. The work of the magazine's editorial staff is as follows: Editors read submissions from national and international writers and poets; vote and comment on each poem, story, or essay; and meet monthly to discuss which submissions should be accepted for publication. CRR receives well over five hundred submissions per semester; each submission consists of as many as five poems or a short story of up to five thousand words. May be repeated for credit as many as four times, for a total of four credit hours.

Students will produce advanced poetry to be critiqued in a workshop environment. Contemporary poets will be studied as models with an emphasis on the manuscript as a whole.

Students will produce advanced fiction to be critiqued in a workshop environment. Contemporary writers will be studied as models with an emphasis on the development of plot, character, setting, theme, point of view, and diction.

Students will write and critique original works of creative nonfiction in a workshop environment. Contemporary essays will be studied as models.

A study of Western poetry and fiction from 1980 through today. Contemporary Writing will focus on the analysis of work for which an incomplete body of criticism exists.

General Electives — 10-12 hours *ENG 2310: May be taken for credit as many as four times; additional hours accrued in this manner are applied as general electives.

Passionate about creative writing? Ever considered a career in writing and/or publishing? The Creative & Publishable Writing (CPW) Pathway is a program concentration within the Associate of Arts degree that seeks to expose learners to a variety of creative writing genres, including fiction, poetry, and non-fiction. This CPW Pathway offers an interdisciplinary approach to creative expression and provides excellent preparation for a job in the publishing industry or a degree in creative writing. It will also serve those interested in transferring to baccalaureate institutions with undergraduate major and/or minor programs in Creative Writing. The CPW Pathway offers many benefits, such as discovering your voice through artistic expression, participating in a writers' community, and gaining experience designing, editing, and publishing. Also, this program can extend beyond creative writing as well. Writing intensive fields such as law, business, and marketing are always looking for people who can “show, not tell” a story through writing. The goal of the program is not to just create creative writers, but creative people.

This is an example course sequence for students interested in pursuing Creative and Publishable Writing. This does not represent a contract, nor does it guarantee course availability. If this pathway is followed as outlined, you will earn an AA degree. One course will satisfy the Human Diversity (HD) requirement, and is labeled with an (HD) in the sequence below. Following this pathway will help you get your associate degree, which will increase your chances of transfer to Bachelor’s-level programs of study. Choose Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI) courses to fulfill general education requirements whenever possible. Creative Writing AFA

Quick facts.

Graduates of the Creative Writing AFA program will be able to write effectively in multiple creative writing genres, with the intent of beginning a career in a related field or transferring into a bachelor's degree program at a 4-year institution. Students will develop and refine their writing skills and explore their interests with courses in fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, screenwriting, literature, publication, and more. The broad exposure can help students decide on an area of focus for their career or bachelor's degree program.

After completing the Creative Writing AFA, students can pursue writing careers or transfer to a bachelor of arts or bachelor of fine arts degree program in Creative Writing, as well as other bachelor's programs.

Write Like Us

Write Like Us is an equity-based creative writing program at five Twin Cities metro-area community colleges: Anoka-Ramsey Community College, Century College, Minneapolis Community and Technical College, Normandale Community College, and North Hennepin Community College.

Write Like Us centers and celebrates the work of BIPOC writers and writing students, fostering literary mentorship and leadership as it builds a platform for shared stories, voices, and lived experiences.

Write Like Us will host several writers in residence during the 2022-2023 academic year, including nationally prominent BIPOC authors and four local BIPOC author-mentors who will work throughout the year in fellowships with BIPOC student mentees at each of our campuses. During the Fall of 2022, the author mentors will visit each participating campus and national author Kiese Laymon will visit North Hennepin Community College (in conversation with Michael Kleber-Diggs).

An Associate of Fine Arts (A.F.A.) degree is intended for students whose primary goal is to complete a program in a designated discipline in fine arts. The A.F.A. degree is designed for transfer to a baccalaureate degree.

Completion of an A.F.A. degree fulfills the Goal Area 2 requirement of the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum (MnTC).

Developmental Coursework Some students may need preparatory course(s) in Math and/or English. Courses numbered below 1000 will not apply toward a degree.

Here you’ll master the complexities of the English language and learn to use words in ways that can change the world. Outside the arts, this track has business applications as well, including advertising, branding and marketing.

Program Description

The Associate in Arts (A.A.) degree is designed for transfer to an upper-division public college or university in the state of Florida. Students will complete the A.A. General degree, including common program prerequisites for their program of choice.

The following sample courses are listed for illustrative purposes only, are based on the state of Florida common prerequisites manual and university transfer counseling manuals and are subject to change without warning. Many universities have unique additional requirements for entry to the major. Students must work with Student Affairs advisors, counselors or specialists to make sure required courses are taken and entry requirements are met for the college/university program of their choice.

Students may also refer to the online A.A. Transfer Evaluation through the FloridaShines website (previously FLVC.org) for more information on their transfer program of choice.

Completion of the A.A. General degree to include the following pathway courses for the major:

Students must complete all Required Courses with a grade of "C" or higher.

Gen Ed Core Denotes that a class is a State of Florida General Education Core Course.

Beginning in the 2022-23 academic year and thereafter, students entering associate in arts, associate in science or associate in applied science, or baccalaureate degree programs must complete at least one (1) course from each of the general education subject areas listed in this section prior to the awarding of their degree. Please refer to this catalog's Graduation Requirements section for specific requirements on the General Education Core Courses .

The Creative Writing Department at Austin Community College (ACC) helps students of all backgrounds and ages discover the power and enjoyment of writing creatively. Our courses introduce writers to the knowledge and literary tools needed for writing poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, plays, and screenplays. Our courses help students explore a subject area in greater depth within a seminar/workshop setting. Our faculty consist of practicing writers with advanced degrees and/or first-hand experience and publications in the subjects they teach. ACC offers an Associate of Arts Degree in Creative Writing in both face-to-face and online formats, giving students on opportunity to produce professional-level projects and also to transfer their skills to four-year universities.

The Associate of Fine Arts (AFA) in Creative Writing degree program is intended to constitute the first two years of a baccalaureate degree program. In addition to lower division introductory coursework in Creative Writing, the 40-credit Minnesota Transfer Curriculum (MnTC) is completed within the degree to facilitate transfer. For assistance in program planning, or to explore additional transfer options, students should schedule a time to meet with an academic advisor. This degree may transfer in part or in its entirety to baccalaureate institutions. Students should meet with a representative of the transfer institution when planning their program.

DEVELOPMENTAL COURSES

Some students may need preparatory courses in the areas of English, mathematics, or reading. Courses numbered below 1000 will not apply toward this degree.

Program Goals

By completing this program, students will achieve the following learning goals:

Demonstrate critical knowledge of a wide range of contemporary literature and a variety of diverse cultural viewpoints.
Demonstrate expertise in critical analysis of professional works of creative writing as writers (reading as writers).
Demonstrate knowledge of prosody, narrative strategies, forms, genres, and aesthetics by learning to write well in many creative forms. This includes a basic command of grammar.
Demonstrate intellectual discipline by narrowing one’s creative focus and energies to produce the most effective work while meeting deadlines and managing time effectively.
Demonstrate habits of creativity in the form of experimentation, inventiveness, and revision.

A minimum of 60 semester credits in courses numbered 1000 or above.
A minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 in courses numbered 1000 or above at ARCC.
A minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 in all MnTC courses.

Understanding the Southern Cross Model

The Southern Cross Model is a game-changer in higher education study.

Our students now engage in shorter, six-week unit structures designed around immersive and interactive learning experiences. The shorter unit structure gives students a greater sense of momentum as they achieve milestones quickly, resulting in increased student success rates, and course and teacher satisfaction. On-campus students experience a variety of teaching approaches including lectures, tutorials, online activities and video-linked or podcast virtual classes.

Opportunities exist for writing students to undertake work placements with Northern Rivers Performing Arts (NORPA) (an education partner of our University), the Byron Writers Festival , and the Kyogle Writers Festival.

You can undertake an optional professional placement unit of 70 – 100 hours in an appropriate organisation, developing your knowledge and skills.

Graduates of the Associate Degree of Creative Writing may also choose to continue to study for a further year and complete their Bachelor of Arts .

English language requirements apply to International applicants and other applicants whose previous study was undertaken in a language other than English. The minimum English language requirements for such applicants for entry to this course are as follows

To be eligible to receive the Associate Degree of Creative Writing, students must complete the equivalent of 16 units (192 credit points) comprising:

15 core units (180 credit points), and
1 project unit (12 credit points).

To be eligible to receive the Diploma of Creative Writing, students must complete the equivalent of 8 units (96 credit points), comprising:

core units (96 credit points).

Other things to consider

Early offer for year 12s.

The Early Offer program allows Year 12 students to secure a place in a Southern Cross University undergraduate degree before Year 12 results are released. It’s designed to remove some of the pressure from Year 12 and provide a pathway directly into university study that is not based solely on Year 12 results.

Alternative pathways, certificates and diplomas

There are different pathways into an undergraduate degree.

Whether you are returning to study after some time or you have just finished school and you need some extra academic preparation before embarking on a degree, Southern Cross University offers two excellent, fee-free academic preparation programs that develop the skills you need to be successful at university.

Fees and Scholarships

Domestic students.

You are a domestic student if you are an Australian citizen or permanent resident, New Zealand citizen, or Australian humanitarian visa holder. Your course will either be a Commonwealth Supported Place or a full fee-paying place. This is noted in the course snapshot.

Commonwealth Supported Places:

In a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) , the Government pays some of your fees and you pay the rest as the Student Contribution Amount (SCA).

SCA is calculated per unit, not per course. Eligible students can defer the SCA through a HECS-HELP loan.

Full Fee-Paying Places:

A full fee-paying place is where you pay the full (unsubsidised) tuition fee for your course. Eligible students can defer the payment of their tuition fees through the FEE-HELP scheme (including employer-reserved places for The Hotel School courses).

What is the Student Services and Amenities Fee?

Also known as SSAF, the Student Services and Amenities Fee is a compulsory fee for most students used to provide important services and amenities to students both on and off campus. It’s charged per unit, based on the unit’s credit point value. Eligible domestic students have the option of deferring this fee through the SA-HELP loan scheme. More about SSAF

Apart from unit fees, what other study costs are there?

Depending on your course, your costs could also include computer equipment and software, books, stationery, field trips, uniforms or other course-specific expenses such as art materials, musical equipment or travel for practicums, internships, vaccinations or industry experience.

What scholarships are available?

Southern Cross University offers a range of scholarships for undergraduate (your first degree), postgraduate, Indigenous Australian students as well as international students. There are also scholarships available to help you study overseas for a short period as an international exchange student. Admission Information for the Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing (MFA)

Admission requirements.

A non-refundable, non-transferable $50 application fee will be posted on the current application upon enrollment (waived for qualifying service members, veterans, and military spouses – documentation verifying military status is required) .
Unofficial transcripts can be used for acceptance purposes with the submission of a Transcript Request Form .
Creative Writing Sample – A creative writing sample of one creative writing work of at least 2,500 words or a culmination of creative writing samples totaling 2,500 words.*
Applicants whose native language is other than English must submit official scores for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or an approved alternative assessment. For information on alternative assessments or TOEFL waivers, please call Admissions or view the official International Admissions policy .

*A sample of one or more poems totaling a minimum of 750 words may also be submitted. Song lyrics are not accepted at this time as writing samples.

Preliminary Acceptance

If you are sending in a preliminary transcript for acceptance, you must:

Be in your final term and planning to start your master’s degree after the last day of class for your bachelor’s degree.
Complete a Bachelor’s Self-Certification Form confirming your completion date. You may download the form from the Forms and Downloads page or contact an admissions counselor to submit the form on your behalf.
Submit an official/unofficial transcript to confirm that you are in your final term. The preliminary transcript must show a minimum of 105 completed credit hours.
If you are a current Liberty University student completing your undergraduate degree, you will need to submit a Degree/Certificate Completion Application .
Send in an additional, final official transcript with a conferral date on it by the end of your first semester of enrollment in the new master’s degree.

Transcript Policies

Unofficial college transcript policy.

Unofficial transcripts combined with a Transcript Request Form can be used for admission. Official transcripts are required within 60 days of the admissions decision or before non-attendance drops for the first set of matriculated classes, whichever comes first, and will prevent enrollment into future terms until all official transcripts have been received.

Before sending unofficial college transcripts, please make sure they include the following:

Your previous school’s name or logo printed on the document
Cumulative GPA
A list of completed courses and earned credit broken down by semester
Degree and date conferred (if applicable)

Official College Transcript Policy

An acceptable official college transcript is one that has been issued directly from the institution and is in a sealed envelope. If you have one in your possession, it must meet the same requirements. If your previous institution offers electronic official transcript processing, they can send the document directly to [email protected] .
