If, like me, you've used Google Slides unquestioningly for years, it's a whole new world out there. The newest crop of online presentation tools go way beyond the classic slideshow experience, with new features to keep your audience's attention, streamline the creation process with AI, and turn slide decks into videos and interactive conversations.

I've been testing these apps for the past few years, and this time, I spent several days tinkering with 25 of the top presentation software solutions out there to bring you the best of the best.

What makes the best presentation app, how we evaluate and test apps.

When looking for the best presentation apps, I wanted utility players. After all, slideshows are used for just about everything, from pitch decks and product launches to class lectures and church sermons. With that in mind, here's what I was looking for:

Pre-built templates. The best presentation tools should have attractive, professional-looking templates to build presentations in a hurry.

Sharing and collaboration options. Whether you plan to share your webinar slides later, or you just want to collaborate with a coworker on a presentation, it should be easy to share files and collaborate in real-time.

Flexibility and customization options. Templates are great, but top presentation apps should enable you to customize just about everything—giving you the flexibility to build exactly what you need.

Affordability. Creating compelling presentations is important, but you shouldn't have to bust your budget to make it happen. With capable free tools on the market, affordability is a top consideration.

Standalone functionality. There's no reason to use multiple tools when one can do it all, so I didn't test any apps that require and work on top of another presentation app like PowerPoint or Google Slides.

Familiar, deck-based interface. For our purposes here, I only tested software that uses slides, with the familiar deck-based editor you expect from a "presentation" tool (versus, for example, a video creation app).

Beyond that, I also looked for presentation apps that brought something unique to the table—features above and beyond what you can get for free from a legacy solution like PowerPoint or Google Slides.

Here's what my testing workflow looked like:

I went through any onboarding or guided tutorials.

I created a new deck, scanning through all available templates, noting how well-designed they were (and which were free versus paid).

I added new slides, deleted slides, edited text and images, and played around with other content types.

I changed presentation design settings, like color schemes and background images.

I reviewed and tested the sharing and collaboration options.

I tested out presenter view (when available).

Anyone who's accidentally scrolled too far and been bumped to the next slide will appreciate Canva's editor interface, which eliminates that problem altogether with a smooth scroll that doesn't jump around. While Beautiful.ai doesn't offer a free plan, paid plans are reasonably priced and offer sharing and collaboration options that rival collab-focused apps like Google Slides. And speaking of Google, you can connect Beautiful.ai with Google Drive to save all your presentations there.

Note: I re-tested the generative AI feature (called DesignerBot) this year. It's great for adding individual slides to an existing presentation—automatically choosing the best layout and matching the design to the rest of the deck—but as with most other apps, it struggled to pull in relevant images.

Unlike nearly all other presentation apps on the market, Prezi Present doesn't restrict the structure of your presentation to a straight line. The editor focuses on topics and subtopics and allows you to arrange them any way you want, so you can create a more conversational flow of information.

With the structural flexibility, you still get all the same customization features you expect from top presentation software, including fully-editable templates. There's a learning curve if you're unfamiliar with non-linear presentations, but templates offer a great jumping-off point, and Prezi's editor does a good job of making the process more approachable.

Plus, Prezi comes with two other apps: Prezi Design and Prezi Video. Prezi Video helps you take remote presentations to a new level. You can record a video where the presentation elements are displayed right over your webcam feed. Record and save the video to share later, or connect with your video conferencing tool of choice (including Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet) to present live.

Prezi's generative AI feature works ok, but it's more useful as a wireframe. When I asked it to create a presentation about the Stanley Cup Playoffs, for example, the resulting content read a lot like a student writing a term paper in the broadest strokes possible to avoid doing any actual research.

Powtoon makes it easy to create engaging videos by orienting the editor around a slide deck. Editing a Powtoon feels just like editing a presentation, but by the time you finish, you have a professional video. 

You can edit your slides at any time, and when you hit play, a video plays through your deck—the feel is almost like an animated explainer video. Each slide includes the animations you choose and takes up as much time as is needed based on the content on the slide. Powtoon figures the timing automatically, and you can see in the bottom-right of the editor how much time is used on your current slide versus the total presentation. If you ever want to present as a slide deck, just toggle between Slideshow and Movie.

You'll likely need to subscribe to a paid plan to get the most out of Powtoon—like creating videos longer than three minutes, downloading them as MP4 files, and white-labeling your presentations—but doing so won't break the bank. Plus, you'll unlock tons of templates complete with animations and soundtracks.

One of my favorite Powtoon features is the ability to orient your video: you can choose horizontal orientation (like a normal presentation) or opt for vertical (for mobile) or square (for social media). When your presentation is ready, you can publish straight to YouTube, Wistia, Facebook Ads, and any number of other locations.

As far as decks go, Pitch includes all the beautifully-designed templates, customizability, and ease of use you expect from a top-notch presentation tool. But the app really shines when you add your team.

The right-hand sidebar is all about project management and collaboration: you can set and update the status of your deck, assign entire presentations or individual slides to team members, plus comment or add notes. Save custom templates to make future presentations even easier and faster.

You can also invite collaborators from outside your company to work with you on individual decks. And if you opt for a paid plan, Pitch introduces workspace roles, shared private folders, and version history.

Pitch also offers one of the most impressive generative AI features on this list. It still struggles to pull in relevant images, but I found the AI-generated written content and design to be top-notch.

I tested a lot of apps claiming to use AI to up your presentation game, and Gamma's conversational AI features were head and shoulders above the crowd.

Simply give the app a topic—or upload an outline, notes, or any other document or article—approve the outline, and pick a theme. The app will take it from there and create a fully fleshed-out presentation. It's far from perfect, but Gamma produces a very useful jumping-off point. (Last year, it was by far the best, but this year, other apps are catching up.)

Here's the key: Gamma is much more geared toward the iterative, chatbot experience familiar to ChatGPT users. Click on the Edit with AI button at the top of the right-hand menu to open the chat, and you'll see suggested prompts—or you can type in your own requests for how Gamma should alter the presentation.

Once you've done all you can with prompts, simply close the chat box to manually add the finishing touches. While you do sacrifice some granular customizability in exchange for the AI features, you can still choose your visual theme, change slide layouts, format text, and add any images, videos, or even app and web content.

If you need to engage with an audience during your presentation, Mentimeter makes that easy. The app is designed around interactive elements like quizzes, surveys, Q&As, sliders, and more (even a Miro whiteboard!).

Each of these is included in a number of different, professional-looking templates, so you can build a fully interactive presentation super quickly.

When it's time to present, your audience members can scan the QR code with their phone cameras or type in the URL and access code to participate. There's one code per presentation (so they won't have to do this on every slide), which gives access to each slide as you move through the presentation.

There are two main drawbacks to this one, though. First, there's a bit of a learning curve and less familiar editing interface (but I found it pretty easy to learn with some practice). The other drawback is that you can't get as granular with the visual customization as you can with many other presentation tools.

There's definitely a learning curve

Tome is one of the new additions to this list that I'm most excited about. If you're looking for generative AI that just genuinely works , it's definitely worth a look. The editor is a bit more stripped down than most presentation apps but intuitive nonetheless—it's almost a cross between your standard deck editor and a Notion-style doc.

To generate an AI deck, click Generate with AI in the top right, and either write your own prompt or choose from the example prompts that cover a handful of common use cases, like sales enablement and company pitches. Edit or approve the suggested outline, then generate the full presentation.

From there, you can edit each slide as a doc via the right-hand menu—without limits on how much information you can include. During the presentation, you simply size down any slides that take up more than the standard amount of space. It's super simple but somehow feels revolutionary in a presentation app.

What about the old standbys?

You might notice a few major presentation players aren't on this list, including OGs Microsoft PowerPoint, Apple Keynote, and Google Slides. These apps are perfectly adequate for creating basic presentations, and they're free if you have a Windows or Mac device or a Google account.

I didn't include them on the list because the presentation space has really developed in the last several years, and after testing them out, I found these behemoths haven't kept pace. If they weren't made by Microsoft/Apple/Google, I might not even be mentioning them. They're pretty basic tools, they're behind the curve when it comes to templates (both quantity and design), and they don't offer any uniquely valuable features like robust team collaboration, branding controls, video, and so on.

In any case, if you're reading this, you're probably looking for an alternative that allows you to move away from one of the big 3, and as the presentation platforms featured above show, there's a ton to gain—in terms of features, usability, and more—when you do.

What about PowerPoint and Google Slides add-ons?

While I focused my testing on tools with full feature-sets—those that can serve as your sole presentation tool—there are a ton of add-on tools you can use atop big name tools like PowerPoint and Google Slides.

They have an omnichannel inbox where you can see customer conversations from a plethora of channels. If you take a high volume of calls, you’re able to set up an IVR system. They also offer a number of reporting options to better understand team performance and some automations and integrations to improve productivity.

One thing to note is that many of the features mentioned above aren’t available on their more basic plans. For instance, the platform’s small business plan does not provide any reporting capabilities, which could be a deal breaker for some.

Our compass for how to constantly deliver value to customers is none other than the desired outcome . In more practical terms, our client presentations are the first step in navigating our client towards the road to success.

This is one of your most important assets you will have as a CSM . A structured, well-built presentation for any customer lifecycle stage is the enabler of showcasing clear value to your customers.

In this article, I share best practices and tips on how to build killer client presentations for any stage in the customer lifecycle.

Build a Client Presentation Checklist

When I build a presentation, I always make sure to go over the following items — to guarantee that its content is complete and comprehensive.

  • Know your audience & stakeholders - This is one of the most important things to keep in mind when building a presentation. Effective presentations can’t be built without knowing which people will be in the room, and who the ultimate decision-makers are.  Mapping out the people attending the meeting — both on the clients’ side and on the vendor side clarifies your understanding of the material you should include. This should cover important subject matters for the stakeholders so that you can captivate your customers with a clear and powerful presentation.
  • Identify the presentation goal - Every presentation will serve a different purpose within the customer lifecycle, so identifying your presentation’s goal is imperative to its successful delivery. For example, a kickoff meeting’s main goal could be to “showcase the first perception of value”. A QBR/EBR goal, however, would be to “showcase milestones & goals achieved using your product”, and so on. Pinpointing your presentation’s main goal lets you dig deeper into the details and key items that will fulfill the presentation’s goal in the clearest and most impactful way.
  • Identifying the Key Items - These items will be included in the presentation’s agenda. Same as the presentation, the purpose of your chosen key items is to exhibit your product’s added value and help you achieve the presentation goal. Let’s say you are building your product’s basic training presentation with the goal to teach the customers how to use its basic features. The key items in the presentation would then include those exact features; their added value per use case, which you can even show using your customer’s real data or dashboard. This conclusive list of key presentation items facilitates the next step: building your presentation template and slowly compiling its parts. You can now start connecting the dots that create an impressive narrative; delivering a clear message whose value permeates each presentation slide.  Each slide should tell a brief story (in a few words alone) that helps your value proposition resonate among your audience by the meeting conclusion.  The more value your customers derive from each presentation or meeting, the stronger the CSM-to-customer relationship becomes. Ultimately, you’ll be considered a key part of their success: the strategic advisor within your company.

Build your story

You’ve now mapped out your audience, with a clear definition of the meeting goal and your presentation’s key items. The last step is to design a presentation sequence and flow that will maintain audience interest during the meeting, each slide telling its own story. 

By the time you’ve finished presenting, you’ll have achieved the presentation’s goal and by presenting valuable insights to your customers that will keep them eagerly waiting for your next presentation and the information you’ll provide.

Create client presentation templates

Presentation templates are a key part of scaling your customer success capabilities. Templates are more than a time-saver: they also allow you to focus more on improving presentation deliverables, based on your customers’ feedback, industry, and feature preference. 

Some templates vary according to product needs (for example, product training & setup). However, for kickoff meetings, ongoing meetings, and QBR/EBRs, I maintain the same structure and tailor it according to customer background and the product at hand.

Here are some templates you can use:

Kickoff Meeting

This is one of the customer lifecycle’s most important stages; where your customers see your product differentiation and value. 

Here you will present the project scope and timeline, and work with your customer to identify their desired outcome and success plan.

  • Agenda - Always have an agenda in place, preferably share this agenda the moment you send the calendar invite
  • Your Team - Who will be the key stakeholders within your company (CSM, support, sales, etc.)? Make sure to add the contact details and explain the best communication method for each stakeholder
  • About Your Compan - This part of the presentation is your opportunity to ask key questions to your customer in order to better understand their expectations, objectives, and desired outcome
  • Onboarding Overview - In this section, you will present your onboarding plan to the customer, make sure you give important context on what does each stage mean and what will they achieve as they progress, and how much more value they will get from your product once they have been fully onboarded
  • Key Opportunities - If you did your due diligence, you might have a few examples of how your product can add immediate value to your customer. The best approach is to present use-cases that have a direct impact on your customer’s business outcomes
  • Q&A - Leave a few minutes to answer any questions they have about the product/onboarding/anything else
  • "Next Steps" - Momentum is key, so make sure the next steps are clear action items that will get your customer closer to the next milestone

Ongoing Meeting

Now that you’ve completed customer onboarding , your focus shifts towards the desired outcome and executing the defined action items within the success plan. 

Depending on the client, you may want to have this type of meeting on a bi-weekly/monthly basis.

  • Open Items - This is intended for a status update for any open items related to your customer, show that you’re on top of things and that you’ll make sure these items are completed
  • Account Review - What progress has been made so far? Are we getting closer to important milestones? This is in context to the desired outcome and success plan
  • Opportunities - Are we using the product to its full potential or are there any available features that can help us get closer to the desired outcome.
  • Key Takeaways - This slide can be used to share your key recommendations and also emphasize key achievements, this will further position you as a strategic consultant to your customer. The key achievements can be anything that gets the customer closer to their desired outcome and closer to achieving the main objectives in their success plan. ‍

  • Executive Overview - The executive overview gives a quick picture and clear report of what has been achieved since the past QBR/EBR, so the rest of the presentation should tell the story of each individual achievement. In a few words, underscore the work set in place that led us to successful results.
  • Account Review - If the executive overview includes all of the achievements, this is where you can tell the story of how you obtained them and what the progress looked like.
  • Engagement Heat Map  - I personally like this one since it’s your opportunity to showcase your added value as an account CSM; emphasize how working together helped the customer reach their objectives. The idea is to account not only for the product’s added value, but for our knowledge and expertise as well.
  • Your Success Plan (Milestones) - This is probably the most important presentation slide. There’s no clearer way of proving value than by fulfilling your customer’s expectations and objectives. This is why defining your success plan with your customer is crucial, so that you’re both aligned on the plan’s key objectives, goals, milestones, etc.
  • “Looking Ahead” - This slide focuses on future plans: planning for the next Q and opportunities available for exploration. If there’s a renewal coming up, this is also the perfect time to discuss it and discuss their point of view. Don’t forget to update the success plan accordingly.

A former SaaS marketing and sales leader from Okta, Citrix, and Microsoft shares the seven critical slides for a B2B customer presentation.

  • A great presentation takes a customer through a three-chapter journey:
  • The opening gambit: Cover Why Buy Anything? and Why Now? to draw prospects into the problem, open up, and enter a discussion as to their business priorities and how they’re solving the problem today.
  • A new way forward: This is your company's opportunity to demonstrate thought leadership as to how to solve the problem.
  • Your unique solution: Give the prospect a product demo to show how your solution works and provide evidence that it provides value as advertised.

Today’s customer meetings for enterprise look nothing like they did 10 years ago. Forrester reports that 62% of B2B buyers today will get to a vendor shortlist based solely on online research. Armed with more information and the need to sort through more vendors than ever, customers seek consultative two-way conversational meetings that start and end with their challenges rather than one-way product pitches.

In The Unusual Guide to Customer Storytelling , we discussed how to create a shared narrative that wins customers by shifting the focus from what you do to a higher standard of why you do it. One that meets a customer where they're at — their worldview, their urgent problems — and collaboratively walks them through your proposed new approach and how you uniquely solve their problem by demonstrating the most value. The following guide provides a step-by-step process for building a customer meeting presentation based on this framework.  

How long should the customer presentation be? ‍

We're going to assume conciseness is important: a 30-minute meeting, 10 of which is a demo, five minutes for intros. That leaves 15 minutes for your slides. At two minutes per slide, that’s only seven to eight slides for a first meeting! Even if you have an hour, the slides should not take longer than 20 minutes to deliver. Far better to fill the rest of the time with discovery, discussion, and concrete next steps.

Remember, form follows function. Before creating a PowerPoint or Google slides, be sure to draft an outline of your story. Once in PowerPoint, it's simply too easy to start adding slides that don’t help your argument move forward. Assuming you’ve read our North Star storytelling guide , try writing a one- to two-page story that buckets your three "why messaging" into slides. Then, create seven to eight headline points from each paragraph that form the basis of your slide headers.

Your story should then fit neatly in the speaker’s notes of the presentation. Done well, you have a key point to build each slide around and narrative detail that you can refer to as you add visuals. Assuming you’re working with other team members, be sure to collaborate on the script in Google Sheets before finalizing.

7 recommended slides for a B2B customer presentation

Slide 0: the title slide (and 30-second elevator pitch).

The first slide is actually the title slide. It contains the least amount of information but from a delivery standpoint, is the most important to get right. It’s the slide that will probably sit on screen for those first crucial minutes. The risk is undershooting or overshooting how much is delivered. Best practice here is to script a 30-second elevator pitch that provides a ‘3 whys’ preview. Here’s an example: 

"Hi, I’m Todd, the CEO at Okta, a venture-backed identity management startup helping companies accelerate their move to cloud software. As the former head of engineering at Salesforce, I saw first-hand how the world was changing from on-premises software to SaaS and how IT was becoming increasingly challenged to adopt applications like Salesforce, Office365, Box, etc. Over the next 30 minutes, we’d like to understand what initiatives your company has around SaaS and how we could partner to quickly and securely enable cloud adoption for your business."

In your intro, include who you are, a one-liner on the big problem you solve, your founder insight / credibility, an invitation to a two-way discussion, and a simple value proposition.  Notice that this intro presumes that accelerating cloud adoption is important.  This should have been discovered prior to the meeting as everything that follows from here will build on this core belief/assumption.

Slide 1: How the new world is challenging the old world

This slide is all about getting to a shared understanding of the new world. It’s context setting with some insight and thought leadership. 

In general, you want heads nodding and an engaged audience. I like to start with a simple old-world / new-world contrast visual and impact statement on the target audience. In Okta’s case, a visual with on-premises servers and apps like Oracle/SAP surrounded by a perimeter with cloud apps outside. Then the impact statement is that the shift to SaaS software challenges IT to deliver services to employees.

To ensure engagement, always end the presentation of this slide with a discovery question like "How has this change impacted your world?"

Slide 2: Focus on the customer’s pain point

<target audience=""> are now struggling to <urgent pain=""></urgent></target>.

Goal: identify two to four acute, hair-on-fire Why Now? pain points

Example: “Who to wake up?” — Omnition

The second slide is best focused on naming specific, urgent pain points that should be easily understood by the customer. One of my favorites is from Omnition, an Unusual portfolio company recently acquired by Splunk. Omnition provides monitoring for modern API-driven applications. They landed on who to wake up? as their urgent Why Now? problem.

Omnition saw that customers who had application outages would mass-email their entire engineering staff to fix a problem and, of course, time was essential. Worst case, these all-hands-on-deck alerts would go out at night. So, who to wake up? is a beautifully designed urgent problem statement because it’s almost the worst-case scenario for a development team… and shows a great deal of customer empathy in its construction.

It’s good to have three to four problems on the slide in total, ideally built out in a logical flow that shows that current solutions are ineffective. So, after who to wake up? , Omnition had how to connect problem to root cause? , then which customer is impacted? , and a fourth one, where are the bottlenecks?

Even if a company knows who to wake up, they can’t pinpoint the source of the problem and they have no idea what the impact is to the customer. See how all of these are using language that a customer would use? Again, empathy, urgency, and relevance to the business. By the end of this slide, the customer should be heavily engaged and looking to you to provide a new way forward out of this mess!

As with slide one, the presentation of this slide should end with a discovery question like "Are you seeing any of these problems in your organization?" It’s worth staying on this slide the longest of any slide in the deck to invite the customer to open up about their internal priorities and challenges relative to the problems identified in this slide.  

Slide 3: A new approach is needed to solve an urgent pain

Goal: provide a high-level framework for how the new world should work

Example: Citrix — need to enable Mobile WorkStyles and cloud services

Before solving the problem, you need to demonstrate that you understand the essential criteria for success. Be sure to be complete as no one wants a partial solution to a problem — that’s probably what they currently have! Think of this slide as the key requirements to compete in your market. You’ll cover your unique offering in the next couple slides, so this slide is setting the table.

Here's one of the best examples of a new approach — this is part of Citrix’s presentation of its mobile/cloud story circa 2012 in its heyday. Even though the target company had a lot of products, this slide was able to simplify the framing of the new world in simple language and set of visuals that made a ton of sense to the customer. Customers want Mobile WorkStyles delivered by cloud services. They need them delivered from any cloud to any device. Then the six capabilities listed are the how that snap to a visual transition framing slide.

Slide 4: Introduce your company

Introducing <your company="">: <company tagline=""></company></your>.

Goal: customer should understand how your solution works at a high level

Example: Citrix product line, organized under Mobile Workstyles and Cloud Services (below)

Now you're ready to explain how your product works. For visuals, try to have a single marketecture diagram that shows all the core elements of how you solve the problem on slide two. Where possible, try to have each piece relate to each other visually.

When I worked for Citrix, we started with the products under Mobile Workstyles to explain the end user story that creates demand for the cloud story. Then, we’d walk through the "secure tunnel" between the two clouds (NetScaler), and conclude on the cloud services product portfolio as the delivery vehicle. This is a very broad product portfolio with a dozen products in it. So even complex products can be simplified with the right framework. 

Finally, there will be quite a bit of discussion on this slide as prospects should be asking how each part works and how your product would work in their environment.  Ideally, you’ve had a discovery call earlier and understand their environment, but if not, know that a prospect will want to quickly move from how you view your offering to how they would use the product in their environment.

Done well, this is a great jumping off point for your demo.

Slide 5: Case study or evidence of success

Goal: prove value and demonstrate that your solution is the best choice among the competition

Example: Okta Adobe case study — progressive CIO, adopt 200 SaaS apps in six weeks, embedded Okta in Adobe Creative Cloud

Assuming you have at least one referenceable customer, this is where you want to start proving that you are the best choice. The best cases are those where the buyer shares the same worldview as you do.  

For the first five years of its existence, Okta’s marquee customer case study was Adobe. The CIO, Gerri Martin-Flickinger, was a progressive CIO who saw a huge opportunity to shift the perception of IT from the team that says "no" to new technology to the team that says "yes" to empowering their business units. 

She was able to roll out Office365 (the No. 1 SaaS app) and 200 other applications to 20,000 employees in just a few weeks — the most successful IT project in company history. Also, Adobe as a business was making the transition from sending customers CDs to becoming its own cloud SaaS application and embedded Okta into its Creative Cloud suite. This provided us with a lot of thought leadership storytelling as we could demonstrate how partnering with Okta was a great choice in the near-term to "modernize IT" as well a good strategic long-term bet to "transform the customer experience."

Gerri became the hero of the story. Everyone wants to be the hero.

Slide 6: How

How <your company=""> stacks up to the competition</your>.

Example: side-by-side comparison chart of your company’s primary competitor or competitive "staircase" that shows your differentiators by de-positioning other technologies as legacy or out of touch with where the world is going.

By now, your prospect likes what you have to offer but is considering his or her alternatives. Having a simple side-by-side comparison chart that lists the key competitive dimensions and how your solution checks off more of the boxes is one popular approach. Another is to have a slide that shows how the industry has evolved over the years and that you’re now leading customers into the where the world is heading. Here’s a recent one for Okta that shows the three "stages" of identity maturity, which can then be used to deposition various IAM competitors.

Ideally, you’ve handled most of the questions on what makes you unique earlier in the presentation (eg, your approach and solution on slides three and four). But it’s good to have this slide to put any competitive questions to rest.

Keep in mind that there are three types of features:

• table stakes (everyone has the feature)

• differentiators (everyone has it but you do it better)

• "purple cows" (you are the only vendor who offers the capability) Start with the table stakes features that everyone has and then end with purple cows clearly highlighted.

Slide 7: Showcase your product’s business value

<your company=""> delivers business value</your>.

Example: lower costs from reduced help desk tickets, reduced cost of data breach, reduced time spent provisioning users, reduced time spent managing corporate directories — Okta

I recommend ending with business value for the final slide. You may end up camping on this slide for a long time, so it’s good to have a final slide that nets out what’s in it for the customer, preferably in quantified business value terms. 

The ideal number of business value drivers is three to five. If you’ve been able to quantify business value (per the Three Whys Storytelling framework), you should include the specific range here. If not, then at least a statement of where each source of value comes from needs to be included on this slide. Here’s an example that you can see running live today on https://www.okta.com/roi-calculator/ (customized as slide for each prospect when running a meeting). Only two questions required to create this — how many apps and how many users. That’s it!

A brilliant sales presentation has a number of things going for it.

Being product-centered isn’t one of them. Or simply focusing on your sales pitch won’t do the trick.

So what can you do to make your offer compelling?

From different types of slides to persuasive techniques and visuals, we’ve got you covered.

Below, we look at data-backed strategies, examples, and easy steps to build your own sales presentations in minutes.

  • Title slide: Company name, topic, tagline
  • The “Before” picture: No more than three slides with relevant statistics and graphics.
  • The “After” picture: How life looks with your product. Use happy faces.
  • Company introduction: Who you are and what you do (as it applies to them).
  • The “Bridge” slide: Short outcome statements with icons in circles.
  • Social proof slides: Customer logos with the mission statement on one slide. Pull quote on another.
  • “We’re here for you” slide: Include a call-to-action and contact information.

Many sales presentations fall flat because they ignore this universal psychological bias: People overvalue the benefits of what they have over what they’re missing.

Harvard Business School professor John T. Gourville calls this the “ 9x Effect .” Left unchecked, it can be disastrous for your business.

According to Gourville, “It’s not enough for a new product simply to be better. Unless the gains far outweigh the losses, customers will not adopt it.”

The good news: You can influence how prospects perceive these gains and losses. One of the best ways to prove value is to contrast life before and after your product.

Luckily, there’s a three-step formula for that.

  • Before → Here’s your world…
  • After → Imagine what it would be like if…
  • Bridge → Here’s how to get there.

Start with a vivid description of the pain, present an enviable world where that problem doesn’t exist, then explain how to get there using your tool.

It’s super simple, and it works for cold emails , drip campaigns , and sales discovery decks. Basically anywhere you need to get people excited about what you have to say.

In fact, a lot of companies are already using this formula to great success. The methods used in the sales presentation examples below will help you do the same.

We’re all drawn to happiness. A study at Harvard tells us that emotion is contagious .

You’ll notice that the “Before” (pre-Digital Age) pictures in Facebook’s slides all display neutral faces. But the cover slide that introduces Facebook and the “After” slides have smiling faces on them.

This is important. The placement of those graphics is an intentional persuasion technique.

Studies by psychologists show that we register smiles faster than any other expression. All it takes is 500 milliseconds (1/20th of a second). And when participants in a study were asked to recall expressions, they consistently remembered happy faces over neutral ones.

What to do about it : Add a happy stock photo to your intro and “After” slides, and keep people in “Before” slides to neutral expressions.

Here are some further techniques used during the sales presentation:

Tactic #1: Use Simple Graphics

Use simple graphics to convey meaning without text.

Example: Slide 2 is a picture of a consumer’s hand holding an iPhone — something we can all relate to.

Why It Works: Pictures are more effective than words — it’s called  Picture Superiority . In presentations, pictures help you create connections with your audience. Instead of spoon-feeding them everything word for word, you let them interpret. This builds trust.

Tactic #2: Use Icons

Use icons to show statistics you’re comparing instead of listing them out.

Example: Slide 18 uses people icons to emphasize how small 38 out of 100 people is compared to 89 out of 100.

Why It Works:  We process visuals 60,000 times faster than text.

Tactic #3: Include Statistics

Include statistics that tie real success to the benefits you mention.

Example: “71% lift driving visits to retailer title pages” (Slide 26).

Why It Works:  Precise details prove that you are telling the truth.

Just like how you can’t drive from Marin County to San Francisco without the Golden Gate, you can’t connect a “Before” to an “After” without a bridge.

Add the mission statement of your company — something Contently does from Slide 1 of their deck. Having a logo-filled Customers slide isn’t unusual for sales presentations, but Contently goes one step further by showing you exactly what they do for these companies.

They then drive home the Before-After-Bridge Formula further with case studies:

Before : Customer’s needs when they came on

After: What your company accomplished for them

Bridge : How they got there (specific actions and outcomes)

Here are some other tactics we pulled from the sales presentation:

Tactic #1: Use Graphics/Diagrams

Use graphics, Venn diagrams, and/or equations to drive home your “Before” picture.

Why It Works:  According to a Cornell study , graphs and equations have persuasive power. They “signal a scientific basis for claims, which grants them greater credibility.”

Tactic #2: Keep Slides That Have Bullets to a Minimum

Keep slides that have bullets to a minimum. No more than one in every five slides.

Why It Works:  According to an experiment by the International Journal of Business Communication , “Subjects exposed to a graphic representation paid significantly more attention to , agreed more with, and better recalled the strategy than did subjects who saw a (textually identical) bulleted list.”

Tactic #3: Use Visual Examples

Follow up your descriptions with visual examples.

Example: After stating “15000+ vetted, ready to work journalists searchable by location, topical experience, and social media influence” on Slide 8, Contently shows what this looks like firsthand on slides 9 and 10.

Why It Works:  The same reason why prospects clamor for demos and car buyers ask for test drives. You’re never truly convinced until you see something for yourself.

Which is more effective for you?

This statement — “On average, Yesware customers save ten hours per week” — or this image:

The graphic shows you what that 10 hours looks like for prospects vs. customers. It also calls out a pain that the product removes: data entry.

Visuals are more effective every time. They fuel retention of a presentation from 10% to 65% .

But it’s not as easy as just including a graphic. You need to keep the design clean.

Can you feel it?

Clutter provokes anxiety and stress because it bombards our minds with excessive visual stimuli, causing our senses to work overtime on stimuli that aren’t important.

Here’s a tip from Yesware’s Graphic Designer, Ginelle DeAntonis:

“Customer logos won’t all necessarily have the same dimensions, but keep them the same size visually so that they all have the same importance. You should also disperse colors throughout, so that you don’t for example end up with a bunch of blue logos next to each other. Organize them in a way that’s easy for the eye, because in the end it’s a lot of information at once.”

Here are more tactics to inspire sales presentation ideas:

Tactic #1: Personalize Your Final Slide

Personalize your final slide with your contact information and a headline that drives emotion.

Example: Our Mid-Market Team Lead Kyle includes his phone number and email address with “We’re Here For You”

Why It Works: These small details show your audience that:

  • This is about giving them the end picture, not making a sale
  • The end of the presentation doesn’t mean the end of the conversation
  • Questions are welcomed

Tactic #2: Pair Outcome Statements With Icons in Circles

Example: Slide 4 does this with seven different “After” outcomes.

Why It Works:  We already know why pictures work, but circles have power , too. They imply completeness, infiniteness, and harmony.

Tactic #3: Include Specific Success Metrics

Don’t just list who you work with; include specific success metrics that hit home what you’ve done for them.

Example: 35% New Business Growth for Boomtrain; 30% Higher Reply Rates for Dyn.

Why It Works:  Social proof drives action. It’s why we wait in lines at restaurants and put ourselves on waitlists for sold-out items.

People can only focus for eight seconds at a time. (Sadly, goldfish have one second on us.)

This means you need to cut to the chase fast.

Uber’s headlines in Slides 2-9 tailor the “After” picture to specific pain points. As a result, there’s no need to explicitly state a “Before.”

Slides 11-13 then continue touching on “Before” problems tangentially with customer quotes:

So instead of self-touting benefits, the brand steps aside to let consumers hear from their peers — something that sways 92% of consumers .

Leading questions may be banned from the courtroom, but they aren’t in the boardroom.

DealTap’s slides ask viewers to choose between two scenarios over and over. Each has an obvious winner:

Ever heard of the Focusing Effect?

It’s part of what makes us tick as humans and what makes this design move effective. We focus on one thing and then ignore the rest. Here, DealTap puts the magnifying glass on paperwork vs. automated transactions.

Easy choice.

Sure, DealTap’s platform might have complexities that rival paperwork, but we don’t think about that. We’re looking at the pile of work one the left and the simpler, single interface on the right.

Here are some other tactics to use in your own sales presentation:

Tactic #1: Tell a Story

Tell a story that flows from one slide to the next.

Example: Here’s the story DealTap tells from slides 4 to 8: “Transactions are complicated” → “Expectations on all sides” → “Too many disconnected tools” → “Slow and error prone process” → “However, there’s an opportunity.

Why It Works:   Storytelling in sales with a clear beginning and end (or in this case, a “Before” and “After”) trigger a trust hormone called Oxytocin.

Tactic #2: This vs. That

If it’s hard to separate out one “Before” and “After” vision with your product or service because you offer many dissimilar benefits, consider a “This vs. That” theme for each.

Why It Works:  It breaks up your points into simple decisions and sets you up to win emotional reactions from your audience with stock photos.

Remember how satisfying it was to play connect the dots? Forming a bigger picture out of disconnected circles.

That’s what you need to make your audience do.

Zuora tells a story by:

  • Laying out the reality (the “Before” part of the Before-After-Bridge formula).
  • Asking you a question that you want to answer (the “After”)
  • Giving you hints to help you connect the dots
  • Showing you the common thread (the “Bridge”)

You can achieve this by founding your sales presentation on your audience’s intuitions. Set them up with the closely-set “dots,” then let them make the connection.

Here are more tactical sales presentation ideas to steal for your own use:

Tactic #1: Use Logos and Testimonials

Use logos and  testimonial pull-quotes for your highest-profile customers to strengthen your sales presentation.

Example: Slides 21 to 23 include customer quotes from Schneider Electric, Financial Times, and Box.

Why It Works: It’s called  social proof . Prospects value other people’s opinions and trust reputable sources more than you.

Tactic #2: Include White Space

Pad your images with white space.

Example: Slide 17 includes two simple graphics on a white background to drive home an important concept.

Why It Works:  White space creates separation, balance, and attracts the audience’s eyes to the main focus: your image.

Tactic #3: Incorporate Hard Data

Incorporate hard data with a memorable background to make your data stand out.

Example: Slide 5 includes statistics with a backdrop that stands out. The number and exciting title (‘A Global Phenomenon’) are the main focuses of the slide.

Why It Works:  Vivid backdrops are proven to be memorable and help your audience take away important numbers or data.

Psychology tells us that seeing colors can set our mood .

The color red is proven to increase the pulse and heart rate. Beyond that, it’s associated with being active, aggressive, and outspoken. LinkedIn Sales Navigator uses red on slides to draw attention to main points:

You can use hues in your own slides to guide your audience’s emotions. Green gives peace; grey adds a sense of calm; blue breeds trust. See more here .

Caveat: Check with your marketing team first to see if you have a specific color palette or brand guidelines to follow.

Here are some other takeaways from LinkedIn’s sales presentation:

Tactic #1: Include a CTA on Final Slide

Include one clear call-to-action on your final slide.

Example: Slide 9 has a “Learn More” CTA button.

Why It Works:  According to the Paradox of Choice , the more options you give, the less likely they are to act.

Step One : Ask marketing for your company’s style guide (color, logo, and font style).

Step Two: Answer these questions to outline the “Before → After → Bridge” formula for your sales pitch :

  • What are your ICP’s pain points?
  • What end picture resonates with them?
  • How does your company come into play?

Step Three: Ask account management/marketing which customers you can mention in your slides (plus where to access any case studies for pull quotes).

Step Four:  Download photos from Creative Commons . Remember: Graphics > Text. Use Canva to edit on your own — free and fast.

HOW TO ACTIVATE

  • To use the software without restrictions you need to activate the applications with a licence. Licences can be bought from the  store.
  • We currently offer subscription based licences with yearly payment. 
  • To activate the application, copy your licence key-code into the activation-field and push OK. 
  • You can use the software as much as you want in trial-mode. The only restriction is that the applications will close after 10 minutes.

1. Create the timer-list

Write down your schedule in the app interface, or import spreadsheet data: Cuetimer can open CSV & TSV files, and you can paste directly from Excel and Google Sheets. If you prefer a more dynamic workflow where you set the timings as you go, we support that as well.

2. connect the outputs

CueTimer has multiple options for viewing the timers on any device: if you are connected to an external monitor, just push the “Fullscreen” button. Or send the timer-page to broadcast-devices on your LAN-network through NDI. Remote speakers can stay in sync using our online timer.

3. control the time

Conferences & Seminars

A monitor with a countdown-timer is very useful for someone holding a presentation. With CueTimer it is easy to control this monitor and display the timers for the different speakers that enter the stage. When the time is running out you can make the colours change to notify the speakers.

CueTImer is a good choice as a countdown timer solution for streaming and digital events. Create an online timer or display the timer through your video-switcher.

Streaming & Remote Workflows

CueTimer is well suited for the digital workflow that has evolved during the Covid 19 pandemic. We have added multiple options for viewing the timers that should cover most scenarios: you can feed the video-mixers with HDMI or NDI video, and share a webpage with the timers to remote presenters and crew-members.

Lego Masters Norway season 2021 used CueTimer as a production timer to let the contestants know how much time they had left.

Broadcasting & Gameshows

A TV-show needs a production-timer that is reliable, flexible, and easy to use. CueTimer was built to solve this demanding task. To give an example, read more  about how CueTimer was used as a countdown-timer for the season one of Lego Masters Norway.

Multiple Output Options – HDMI, NDI & Online Countdowns

With CueTimer you can send the countdown anywhere:

Push the “Fullscreen” button to place the countdown on the external display. With SDI/Fibre extenders the monitor can be placed far away from the computer.

CueTimer has a native  NDI -output using the latest NDI 5 framework. This lets you share the countdown as graphics over the local LAN-network.

Create a webpage to share the current countdown and the schedule with a list of future timers. The page will scale automatically for all browser-sizes.

Control with Companion

Companion lets you control different devices over the local network and with Streamdeck hardware-boxes. It is free of charge and more info can be found  here.  Our Companion module includes buttons for the most important commands, and it has feedback for the current timer with colors that can be set from CueTimer. With our premade presets found in the Companion menu it is easy to drag and drop the buttons where you need them. The Companion module is built on our open API which can be found here.

Customise the style of the fullscreen timer

The HDMI and NDI-output is completely customizable with colors, placement, fonts, and images. You can have a backgound-image for decoration, your company logo for branding, and to notify the speaker that the time is running out, add a blinking border.

Send messages to the presenters

The confidence-monitor with the timer is one of the few places where you can send messages to the presenter without the audience noticing it. Let them know if their microphone needs to be adjusted, if the next speaker is delayed, or use it for questions from the audience.

If you have a big monitor, place the message on the top of the screen along with the other content. Or if you really want to grab the attention of the speaker, give the message flashy colors and make it fill the whole screen.

Now you can import a spreadsheet with a schedule or a rundown into CueTimer. And with the Auto-Schedule feature, you just need to know the start-times, and CueTimer will calculate the durations for you.

With a subscription-licence  you  can  create an account  on this site where you can monitor your licences, release licences from activated computers, and manage your subscriptions registered to your email-address.

Create a list of timers from our custom spreadsheet

Multiple outptut-options to display the timers on any device:

HDMI fullscreen output. Push the Fullscreen-button do display the timer on the external monitor.

NDI output. Send the timer-window as a native NDI source from CueTimer

Web output. Create a timer-webpage hosted on our server. Here you can also see the schedule with a list of future timers.

Preview windowed-output that is always on top and never reacts to keystrokes. Perfect for Powerpoint.

Use different timer-types: countdown, countup, countdown to time and regular clock.

Add warnings to notify the speaker that the time is running out

Options for what happens when the timer ends: go into overtime, stop the timer, or start the next timer

Change the duration by adding and subtracting minutes or manipulate the speed of the timers.

Customize the countdown-windows with colors, animations and scaling.

Change the style when the timer changes status. For example, when the timer ends, you can make the screen red, and make the countdown blink.

Send messages that is displayed on the timer-outputs. The appearance of the message is fully customisable: place it in the corner, or fill the whole screen.

Native desktop-apps for Mac and Windows that are light on system-resources. Built for demanding live-shows.

Support for multitasking: With native control over the CueTimer-windows, you can display our timers while using other apps.

Undo/Redo & Autosave. We got you covered if you accidentally start the next timer.

Use Stream Deck buttons to control CueTimer through Companion. Then you also get remote-control over the local network.

Support for multiple workflows: The timer-list can be an ordered schedule, or a selection of timer-templates that can be started easily

Export the timer-list as a CSV file

Auto-calculate timer-values so that the end of a timer becomes the start of the next. Then you only need the start-times to make a schedule with durations for all the segments.

Start and stop the timers with keyboard-shortcuts or large buttons

OSC messages to and from CueTimer. Trigger other devices when the timer ends, or start and stop timers with OSC commands.

An open API that lets you control CueTimer over the local network through TCP/IP commands. Create your own controller-app, or use the ones already made for you.
