I've tried out these great free photo editors, and I can vouch that they work just as well as Adobe Photoshop for most projects. They come with lots of features and tools that let you change and improve your photos in all sorts of ways. Plus, you can customize the way they look and feel to make them fit you perfectly.

Like most photo editing programs, Inkscape supports extensions .

When you first open Photoshop Express, you can load a picture from your computer or take a new one directly from your webcam. Once a photo is imported, the menus make it really easy to access all the one-click options like filters, crop tools, image corrections, the red eye remover tool, and more.

I like that some of the features feel similar to what's possible with Photoshop. There are borders, a spot healing brush for one-click touch-ups, effects like grain and fade, and a noise reducer. There's also a button you can click to quickly see the original photo for comparison with your edits.

Something really great about this image editor that you won't find in some similar programs is that with nearly every tool, you have full control over the intensity. This means you can slide a bar left or right to decrease or increase a tool's effect to get it just right.

Windows 11 and Windows 10 users can install Photoshop Express.

Krita is certainly an advanced image editor, but I don't feel like it's too difficult to work with. Like some of these other programs, you can use layers in addition to many other tools located in a floating toolbox off to the side of the program.

There are plenty of other features available as well, such as brushes and blending modes, advanced selection, and masking tools, drawing aids, filters, symmetry tools, and effects.

One tip I want to mention as you jump into using this program involves the Tab  key. Press it to maximize the canvas to fit your entire screen, getting rid of all the menus and tools so that you can have a huge space for working without any distractions.

Krita works with Windows 11, 10, and 8; there's also a portable version. It runs on Linux and macOS 10.12 or higher as well.

Full-featured and easy to use.

Standard editing tools like a crop, text, paint bucket, and gradient tool, among others, are included. But Artweaver goes beyond your basic editor and also lets you save and replay events, use brushes, create and work with layers, customize the layout of the palettes, and import images directly from a scanner or camera, among other things.

The screen mode can be changed from regular to fullscreen to have even more room to edit images. I love this ability because sometimes I'm working from a smaller screen, and I need all the space I can get.

I like the one-click presets and frames, and easy-to-access editing tools that let me finish editing in no time and share my photos directly to social media.

Lots of image file types can be opened in this program, and if saving to your computer, you can pick from JPG, PNG, and TIFF. 

Some features are only available in the premium version; those are marked off in the program with a large "Premium" banner.

PhotoScape is available for Windows 8, 7, Vista, and XP, while PhotoScape X is for Windows 11/10 and macOS.

Great for professionals.

Isn't easy to use.

This one isn't your typical photo editor. Unlike the competition, Darktable, an open-source "photography workflow application," is tough to use right off the bat, but you'll love all the features if you spend some time with it. This app definitely feels more appropriate for professional photographers than someone who just needs to perform a few edits.

One of its standout qualities is non-destructive editing, which ensures your original images remain intact (i.e., not overwritten) throughout the entire workflow. GPU acceleration speeds up image operations, and its filtering and sorting functions help you locate specific pictures through tags and color labels, which is awesome if you have a massive collection to sift through. I also like that Darktable supports automation and RAW image formats.

Best for: Quick online edits.

While Pixlr E is seen as the best online photo editor like Photoshop, Pixlr X is considered the best photo editor for beginners. This software was initially developed as the HTML successor of Pixlr Express in hopes to avoid obsolescence of Flash (1996-2020). Unfortunately, moving from a Flash platform to an HTML one required a lot of trimming down on the original editor’s features.

Notwithstanding this feature minimization, Pixlr X has established itself among the best free photo editing software in the market. The program maintains the slick design of its predecessor while focusing on one-click tools that will cover all your basic editing needs, plus some. You’ll be able to edit your images’ colors and saturation, crop and resize, get rid of unwanted elements with the touchup tool, and adjust the white balance. Other more niche tools, such as red-eye removal and fill light will allow you to take your portrait photography to the next level.

Overall, Pixlr X is an outstanding online photo editor for beginners and non-professional photographers, who will see all their media needs covered. Those looking for more advanced tools, such as brushes or layers, can simply continue their editing process with Pixlr E.

Best for: Novice users looking for impressive features

PhotoScape X’s list of tools seems to be nearly infinite. The software, which is described as an “all-in-one photo editing software” is heavily focused on one-click enhancement features that allow beginners to easily bring their ideas to life.

The program includes thousands of filters, frames, brushes, shape crops, smart cut out tools, a color picker, and clone stamps. Photographers will be able to take full advantage of the RAW conversion feature, while those with a large collection of images to process will be happy to hear about the several batch editing tools the software includes, such as format change, resize, and rename.

PhotoScape X’s capabilities also include much more creative options, such as collage, merging, stickers, effects, text, and brushes. These tools are especially catered to users who want to create original content for their social media profiles or email marketing campaigns.

In order to make sure users make the most of the tens of thousands of creative options in PhotoScape X, the photo editor’s website includes a long list of video tutorials that show how to use each tool to achieve the desired effect. If you are interested in more advanced tools, check out the software’s paid version, which includes a wide selection of manual editing tools.

Fotor offers a long list of basic tools and features, ranging from simple edits like brightness and saturation to more complex concepts such as wrinkle remover and teeth whitening. Fotor also boasts a large selection of effects, frames, stickers, and text options primarily aimed at social media sharing.

In addition to its photo editor, Fotor also includes collage and design sections. In these segments, users can choose from diverse premade templates to build their creations with. These templates are categorized by use, such as general collages, social media posts, marketing resources, documentation, and ads. This enables novice users to easily create high-quality content for all their needs, without having to worry about anything other than the visual appearance. Some of the templates and more high-end tools are only available on the paid version of the software.

Overall, Fotor might be best defined as an image enhancer rather than a photo editing software. Photographers and other media creators will most likely require more sophisticated capabilities than the ones available through Fotor. Yet, the program’s offerings comprise all a small business needs to make the most of their online presence.

Photos Pos Pro was developed with an ambitious goal in mind: creating the perfect photo editing software for beginners and experts alike. In order to do so, the program actually offers two different interfaces for users to pick from.

The advanced layout includes a broader range of tools for more sophisticated manual edits, including layers, brushes, masks, gradients, actions, textures, and RAW conversion. All edits can be made in image batches, potentially saving a lot of post-processing time.

On the novice interface, Photos Pos Pro’s layout is significantly decluttered and heavily focused on automatic edits that can rapidly provide beautiful results. These image enhancements are mainly distributed through filters and creative effects that users can pick and choose from.

Users can access Photos Pos Pro Premium’s more advanced features for free during a 21-day period, allowing them to get a full taste of the program before deciding which option best suits their needs.

The software’s most notable features include hundreds of filters, blur effects, creative frames, textures, tone sliders, preset creation, and automatic online sharing capabilities.

InPixio’s free photo editing software is only available for Windows and iOS mobile devices, however, the premium version of the software is also available for Mac computers. This pro version, known as inPixio Photo Studio 10, offers a wider range of manual editing features, as well as professional-level photo restoring tools and advanced photomontage capabilities.

BeFunky offers easy-to-use photo editing tools that enable users of all levels to achieve professional results. Its interface is uncluttered and user-friendly, making it easy to find the right tools and see the effects on the image in real-time. All edits can be seen in the image’s history, and users can undo or redo the changes if necessary.

Much like Fotor, BeFunky’s program is also divided into three sections: photo editor, collage maker, and graphic designer. In fact, looking at them side by side, it's easy to see just how similar the two programs are. BeFunky seems to be the clear winner in terms of both number of photo editing features and design composition templates, yet most of them are only available for premium users.

The photo editor’s capabilities include a significantly wide range of tools, from basic editing like exposure and contrast, to portrait touch up capabilities, artsy effects, creative overlays, and textures. Each of these sections offers both free and premium features which users can test beforehand.

As for the collage and design sections, both display a long list of fully customizable templates for users to choose from. All three products are offered on BeFunky mobile, which is also available for free or with a premium subscription.

There are plenty of options for us to outsource image editing, and it continues to be the one of the most popular ways for photographers to scale their business.

Choosing a photo editing service can be a time-consuming and frustrating process, but I’ve done my best to save you the head ache with my review below.

What is a Photo Editing Service?

At the most basic level, a photo editing service edits the photos that you take. Post production can be the most time consuming part of a photographer’s workflow, so by outsourcing this step, we can save a lot of time.

As for the actual image editing service itself, this can consist of broad adjustments of colours and exposure across a range of images, all the way down to local adjustments on an image-by-image basis, such as dodging & burning, cropping or spot removal.

In addition to visual edits, the photo editing service can also include things like culling, selecting for blog/portfolio, resizing, exporting and even uploading to client galleries.

You can entrust everything that needs to be done after you click the shutter button on you camera to a photo editing service, and this is why they are so popular right now.

The obvious answer here is that you will save a LOT of time . Even if you’re a whizz at Lightroom, having someone else take care of all your post production will mean you have more time to yourself .

If you’re a wedding photographer like me who works alone, once you start getting lots of wedding inquiries, you need a way to scale your business.

Either you hire an associate photographer to shoot for you, or you outsource the time-consuming elements of your business to someone else.

If you love the energy and excitement of shooting weddings but loathe the time spent behind your desk editing the photos, outsourcing is for you.

By using a photo editing service, we have the option to increase the number of weddings we shoot , safe in the knowledge that we won’t drown under hours of post production.

It’s easy to see how we can scale our business and make more money by paying other people to help with our editing workload.

So aside from saving time and making more money , what are the other benefits of using an image editing service?

Well, having someone who’s arguably a much more experienced image editor than you work on your images can really open your eyes as to what’s possible in post production.

Whilst you may want your image editor to try and replicate your current style as closely as possible, you may on the other hand ask them to try something different.

Having a professional retoucher work on your images with fresh eyes can often lead to changes in your own stylistic preferences, updating your ‘look’ to something you’re more happy with.

Which Photo Editing Service is right for you?

In order to write this post, I’ve spent the last 6 months trialing what I consider to be the best photo editing services in 2017 .

I also tried out a handful of ‘bargain-basement’ options too – you’ve probably been spammed by these in the past. I took one for the team and spent some money to see how and why they can offer image editing for such cheap prices!

For the purposes of this post, I contemplated doing a breakdown of all the image editing services I used with their pros and cons so you could choose the one that suited you the best.

In testing and evaluating each service, I soon found it very hard to effectively separate the results produced by each one.

You see, with premium level photo editing services, the end result is usually very similar (i.e. you get a style of editing that you’re happy with).

Whether this happens after the first attempt, or after a bit of back-and-forth feedback, you will usually get images you’re happy with in the end .

This is because for the most part, you’re dealing with native photo retouchers with a lot of experience in what they do.

As long as you communicate your needs and remain realistic with what to expect, there’s no real reason why the basic-level edited images out of one premium photo editing service should be any better than another.

Even with the el-cheapo image editing companies I tried, I found that the end result was passable . What was not, however, was the level of service.

The level of customer service is extremely important when choosing a photo editing service.

With el-cheapo, you’re dealing with a non-native’s broken English, and a kind of Chinese-whisper-a-thon to get from RAW image to something you’re happy to deliver to your client. These ‘businesses’ often have zero customer service, since their model is churn-and-burn (not long-term relationship building).

With a premium photo editing service, you can expect to be either talking with a dedicated retoucher, or at least to a single manager who will communicate your feedback to a retoucher.

So, rather than mention all of the photo editing service options I used, I’ve chosen one that I feel is the most all-round solution for the vast majority of photographers out there.

A Review of ShootDotEdit

I’ll be honest with you – I really didn’t think I’d be recommending ShootDotEdit as the best photo editing service in 2017.

From their somewhat gaudy orange branding down to an aggressive marketing style, I thought that ShootDotEdit would be the ‘Jetstar’ of outsourced image editing… how wrong I was.

I soon discovered why ShootDotEdit is the number one choice for so many wedding and portrait photographers around the world.

As I mentioned before, the end result of professional photo editing services is largely down to how well you can communicate your needs . It’s impossible to tell if the end image has been edited by company x or company y.

However, there’s a big difference in the level of service you can expect. Thankfully, ShootDotEdit delivers class-leading customer support which is personal and tailored to each client, making the streamlining of your post production smooth and efficient .

Rather than emailing back and forth to get my initial ‘Style Match’ ready, I enjoyed speaking on the phone to my own personal Style Match Consultant who explained the process and followed up after each step.

Style Match is a new offering from ShootDotEdit which aims to deliver a more personalised level of image-editing . After submitting a selection of images that you feel best represent your style, your consultant breaks each image down to recognise your individual stylistic characteristics, in an attempt to reproduce them during the main edit.

Once the optional Style Match is complete, you can submit your images to be colour corrected as normal, choosing optional extras as appropriate to each job.

I prefer to cull my images myself, then outsource the Lightroom Smart Previews to ShootDotEdit for the Style Match and Colour Edit. After 3 or 4 days, I receive an LR.cat file that I can simply import into my Lightroom catalogue to see the edits appear in front of my eyes.

Fortunately the ShootDotEdit tutorials for all their photo editing services are well documented.

Incidentally, the turnaround speeds at ShootDotEdit during my review were excellent and one of the other reasons so many other photographers love their service.

Then I review all the images one last time, sometimes spending more time editing my favourites in Lightroom or Photoshop (using these Lightroom & Photoshop shortcuts ).

At any step in the process, I was able to pick up the phone and speak to someone at ShootDotEdit. This proved to be invaluable, especially as I found the process a little confusing initially.

It’s also worth noting that Style Match is still a very new service, and it does have some kinks that need ironing out in my opinion. Having said this, it’s an optional, and more importantly, free service, and I look forward to seeing how it develops.

The other element that sets ShootDotEdit ahead of its competitors is pricing.

If you shoot over 12 weddings or events a year, the Unlimited Plan is much more cost effective.

At this premium level, you’ll find that photo editing services will offer quite similar pricing. This is to be expected if the companies are using local staff rather than outsourcing to India or the Philippines, where labour is far cheaper.

Most photo editing services price per image, which can initially seem very attractive. However in practice, found myself trying to save money by only selecting the images from a job that I deemed difficult (or un-enjoyable) to edit.

I’d start double-guessing the whole outsourcing process, convincing myself I could edit the image quicker, trying to save money due to the ‘per-image’ model.

Conversely (and somewhat controversially), ShootDotEdit offers a subscription-only model.

Subscriptions are unpopular for some since they seem to ‘tie you in’ to contracts and may appear expensive at first sight. On the flip side though, they can usually offer much better cost savings in the long term.

In the case of ShootDotEdit, there’s an extremely attractive ‘Unlimited’ plan for those of us who shoot at relatively high volume. At $299/month, you can work out just how cost effective it is for you, but let me break it down with a personal example.

I shoot on average 25 weddings a year. Even though the majority of these weddings are during the summer months, this averages out to roughly 2 weddings per month.

If weddings were all I shot, this would mean I’d pay roughly $150 for ShootDotEdit to edit each wedding.

This is actually on par with some other image editing services out there. However, with ShootDotEdit, you can also include other miscellaneous photography ‘events’ as part of the Unlimited plan, making it much more cost effective.

On top of shooting 25 or so weddings, I also average 15 engagement sessions per year, plus 5 or so family sessions as well. You may even shoot maternity, newborn, high school senior and other portrait related work too.

All of these come under the Unlimited Plan’s definition of ‘events’, meaning that they’re included in the $299/month.

Using the example above, it would cost me around $79 per event to outsource my image editing to ShootDotEdit on their Unlimited Plan. (With the 90% discount on the first month available below, this could be reduced even further.)

Once you’re paying a flat fee no matter how many jobs you submit to ShootDotEdit, I find that it becomes additional motivation to try and book more work !

Knowing that your post production is essentially ‘free’ (or at least, completely paid for ) is immensely satisfying, and encourages you to spend more time on the things that you love , safe in the knowledge that the ‘grunt-work’ is taken care of!

ShootDotEdit also offer a cheaper ‘Roll Over’ plan at $119/month which is more suited to those shooting 12 or fewer weddings per year. Under this plan, one wedding ‘credit’ can be exchanged for 2 portrait sessions per month, allowing for some flexibility.

If you need to order more ‘events’ per month under the Roll Over plan, you can pay additional fees, but at this point the Unlimited Plan starts to make more sense.

I haven’t really delved into the various levels of photo editing service offered by ShootDotEdit, nor the added extras, but you can see them all in more detail when you start submitting your first job.

This being a balanced review of ShootDotEdit, I should mention some of the things I didn’t like about their product and service.

First off, I found their website rather unclear and illogical to navigate. Even for the purposes of this review, trying to get to their pricing and services whilst I was logged in proved very difficult.

The Style Match seems like it could be a great product, but I found it had some teething issues. I was rather confused during the initial stages of the consultation due to the lack of adequate explanation on the website, and even after the service was complete, I wasn’t 100% clear how it would work alongside the subsequent colour edits to my jobs.

However, to their credit, ShootDotEdit did their best to explain the service to me over multiple phone calls, and I imagine the process becoming much smoother as the service gains traction.

In the end, I was happy with my edited photos, which is testament to both the Style Match and the regular colour edit.

It should also be noted that ShootDotEdit offers one manager and point of contact per client, but multiple editors. Even though they strive to provide the same editor per client, you never actually know who is editing your work.

I didn’t have any issues with this, and the 3 full-wedding edits performed by ShootDotEdit during this review all exhibited excellent consistency in style .

In addition, having multiple editors ready to take over the job with a seamless transition ensures that the editing turnaround is as fast as possible

To be honest, as long as the end product is excellent and there’s minimal need to communicate during each job… I really couldn’t care which professional retoucher is editing my images!

1. Be realistic

If you give your image editing service a crappy photo, don’t expect them to turn it into a Picasso. You can’t polish a turd :-) Your image retoucher can’t work miracles, so keep your expectations on par with your current work.

Your image retoucher can’t read your mind. No matter how much you communicate your wishes, there’ll always be instances where an image isn’t edited exactly how you want. Even the most ‘vanilla’ of edits will only take you 90% of the way there.

Even after using a photo editing service, you still need to add the cherry on the top with a bit of final polishing, or you’re doing your clients a disservice.

3. Be patient

No matter what photo editing service I tried, the first few emails were always a pain in the butt . The things you think are obvious, may not be to your retoucher.

Times when you purposely under-expose an image may be the times your retoucher decides to open the shadows. Times when your retoucher crops out an unsightly object may be the times you want to include it.

You need to over-communicate your wishes at the start, and be patient when inevitably there are some bumps in the road. The work you put in early on to communicate well with your retoucher will make things much easier later on.

Final Advice

Adobe's Photography Plan gives you access to Adobe Photoshop CC, Adobe Lightroom Classic , and Adobe Lightroom. Despite its immense power, Photoshop is slick and straightforward to use thanks to a very clean interface. Its support for selections, masks, and layers is unmatched, making it the tool of choice for complex composite images.

Lightroom Classic is the best option for regular 'desktop' editing, and while Lightroom offers cloud-based storage to make all your images available everywhere, on any device, it needs 1TB cloud storage, which doubles the cost of the Photography Plan. The latest updates in Lightroom use AI to 'intelligently' select subjects and skies in your images, and it's incredibly effective. 

Some people don't like Adobe's subscription model, but it's being adopted by rivals and is a cost-effective route into software that was once prohibitively expensive.

2. Capture One 23

Capture One offers pretty much the same combination of cataloging tools, non-destructive editing, local adjustments, and preset effects as Lightroom. However, it’s over twice the price and doesn’t have Adobe’s Creative Cloud ecosystem.

What it does have is a workflow that’s well suited to professional commercial photographers shooting ‘tethered’ in a studio and collaborating live with clients via the new Capture One Live service.

Even as a Lightroom replacement, Capture One has a lot to offer. Its raw processing is clearly superior, and its system of adjustment layers and masks means that every adjustment has access to every editing tool. 

It also brings a new Cull window to make it easier to sort through large-scale shoots. However, it does look as if Capture One will prioritize support for subscriptions in 2023 over perpetual licenses, which won’t please everyone.

3. Affinity Photo 2

We complain that there's too much Photoshop doesn't do, but the fact is for many photographers this kind of old-school image editor is exactly what they need. And Affinity Photo 2 gives you exactly the same thing, but subscription-free, via a single extra-low payment. Affinity Photo 2 is sold at a budget price point, but it has the tools and the features and the power to compete with Photoshop head-on. 

Affinity Photo 2 is Serif’s most impressive version of the software to date. The new features, in some cases, are remarkable, despite a useful image browser/cataloging for Raw files remaining absent. But if you’re looking for a highly capable Adobe alternative with an incredibly good value perpetual license to boot, look no further.

4. DxO PhotoLab 7

DxO PhotoLab 7 is a very powerful and effective non-destructive photo browser, raw processor, and image editor. Its lab-developed lens corrections are excellent, correcting edge softness too, its new and improved DeepPRIME XD processing gives spectacular results with high-ISO images, and its new ‘nested’ Projects feature makes it a much better photo organizer. 

 All your adjustments can be changed, removed, or added to in the future, and you can also create ‘virtual copies’ to try out different adjustments without having to physically duplicate your original files. If you work with RAW files and need the purest quality, it’s perhaps the best editor out there today.

5. DxO Nik Collection

Nik Collection consists of eight separate plug-ins which can also be used as standalone programs. Analog Efex Pro is brilliant at analog/darkroom effects, while Color Efex Pro is a hugely powerful suite of filters for individual use or combined into 'recipes'. Silver Efex Pro remains the best digital black and white plug-in ever and is updated in this version with a fresh, modern interface, a new ClearView option, and more powerful selective control points. 

Viveza gets the same treatment and is elevated from a relatively simple local adjustment tool into a much more powerful plug-in. HDR Efex Pro is pretty handy as an HDR merging/effects tool, and while Sharpener Pro and Dfine feel pretty dated now, they can still be useful for output sharpening and noise reduction respectively. And then there's Perspective Efex, DxO's most recent addition, which offers powerful lens and perspective corrections, tilt-shift effects, and advanced wide-angle distortion correction. You can use the Nik Collection plug-ins with Photoshop, Lightroom, and from within DxO PhotoLab – or use them as external editors with other programs like Capture One.

6. ON1 Photo RAW

ON1 Photo RAW is perhaps the single most complete solution of all the programs here, and the 2022 version is the best yet, with new Sky Replacement AI, the integration of ON1 NoNoise AI, and, with the latest update, the integration of ON1 ReSize AI, previously sold separately. There's also an optional ON1 subscription service for Adobe-style image sharing and synchronizing with mobile devices. 

ON1 Photo RAW 2022 has a built-in hybrid browsing and cataloging module that gives you fuss-free exploring of your image folders but more powerful search tools if you need them. It has an Edit module with Develop, Effects, Portrait, and Local (adjustment) panels, and the Effects module alone has a vast array of filters that can be adjusted, masked, and combined in an infinite array of permutations. It pulls off a particularly amazing trick, incorporating layers, masking, and compositing tools into its fully non-destructive workflow.

7. Exposure X7

Like ON1 Photo RAW 2022, Exposure X7 is a relatively little-known program that deserves a lot more recognition than it gets. It’s a subtle, powerful, and efficient all-in-one photo editing and browsing tool that specializes in analog film effects and comes with a huge library of simple one-click preset effects. It doesn't offer image layers (only adjustment layers), so you can't combine photos, but for many photographers that won't matter. Exposure X 7's strengths are its neat, simpler interface, some beautiful effects and presets, and straightforward and effective tools. 

Like ON1 Photo RAW 2022, it also offers non-destructive adjustments and 'virtual copies' to try out lots of different looks for a single image without having to save additional files. The presets and analog looks are amazing, though Exposure X7's raw processing is not the best and it can be slow to render high-resolution images. It's worth looking out for periodic special offers, but its publishers have built this software for quality, not cheapness.

8. Luminar Neo

Luminar Neo is a mix of the good, the disappointing and the plain glitchy. Its AI tools – the good ones – are truly spectacular, but they are diluted somewhat by the borderline pointless Structure AI tool, or Relight AI tool – pointless, because they use AI to do something you could do yourself quite simply and almost certainly better.

The way the Presets are now closed off and have to be applied right at the start of the workflow does not feel like a step forward in any way, except maybe as a route to monetization, and while Luminar Neo does support layers, it’s no Photoshop.

Skylum has always wanted to produce a simple, effective photo editor that skips tedious technicalities. Luminar Neo succeeds in part, but Skylum has brought another kind of confusion with its constant re-invention and re-marketing of Luminar itself.

One more thing. Luminar Neo is certainly not expensive, but even so, you might want to see how it runs on your computer. However, there's no trial version, only a "money back guarantee". Luminar Neo can be used as a standalone program, or as a plugin with Photoshop CC, Lightroom Classic, or Apple Photos.

9. Adobe Photoshop Elements 2023

Photoshop Elements 2023 provides all the organizing and fixing tools that the average photographer requires, plus it gives you in-app guidance on how to develop new creative image-adjusting skills. It may not be an essential upgrade if you already own Elements 2022 though the new Moving Elements command does create eye-catching social media content that should generate some extra likes on your Twitter or Instagram feeds.

You can get Photoshop Elements on its own, or with Adobe Premiere Elements as a bundle – Premiere Elements does for video what Photoshop Elements does for photography. Elements 2022 is good value, but despite the increasing inclusion of Adobe Sensei AI technologies, its interface, its approach to editing, and its Guided Edits do feel a bit old-fashioned.

10. Corel PaintShop Pro 2022 Ultimate

PaintShop Pro 2022 builds on the upgrades in the previous release of the software to provide the best version to date. The price for the Ultimate version makes it a no-brainer over the standard version based on all the extras you receive for a small increase in price, but since this is Windows-only software Mac owners, unfortunately, miss out. 

It's an interesting alternative to Photoshop Elements, giving photo editing novices a helping hand to get started but also offering more advanced tools for the more experienced. Our main issue with Paint Shop Pro 2022 is that it feels like a 'me-too' program that cashes in on the latest trends without bringing anything new – and the sense that it's being developed mainly for its fanbase.

11. CyberLink PhotoDirector

If you’re just getting started in photography, you may want photo-organizing software that's relatively simple to get started with. In this case, take a look at CyberLink PhotoDirector, which has a friendly and approachable interface that beginners will find it easy to get on with. You can import photos or folders directly from your camera and organize them by categories, tags, and keywords. 

There’s also a capable face recognition tool. When it comes to editing your images, there are a bunch of preset filters as well as basic editing tools. There is a range of guided edits, such as Dispersion Effect and Glitch Art, those novices who are looking to improve their pictures will appreciate. This is a great tool for visual experimenters, but probably not one for pro photographers.

12. ACDSee Photo Studio Ultimate 2022

There aren’t many all-in-one image editing software options available, and perhaps there’s a good reason for it; it’s difficult to be great at everything. ACDSee Photo Studio Ultimate 2022 is fantastic at image cataloging and raw processing but perhaps falls down with image editing despite offering layers, filters, masking and adjustment layers. However, it's well worth considering for the image management and raw processing functionality alone. 

The ACDSee 2022 edition adds a Media mode for streamlined digital asset management, and a People mode for AI-powered facial recognition. There are new selection tools, a new color wheel for 'surgical, pixel-based selections' and brush-on noise reduction. The ACDSee PhotoStudio interface is quite dense and complex, though, and likely to be off-putting to beginners. There is a Mac version called ACDSee Photo Studio for Mac 8, but this is a different product and it would be better, surely, if it was a single cross-platform program. ACDSee has also released a new Gemstone 12 photo editor, which is interesting but limited at the same time. We're not going to quarrel with ACDSee's value, though.

How to choose the best photo editing software

With so many photo editing possibilities, it doesn't take long to figure out that one application alone is unlikely to meet all those needs. You can find more help on what to look for in the best photo editing software at the bottom of this page.

Today, there are more options than Photoshop – the one-time 'king' of photo editors. Adobe's Photography Plan includes Photoshop and Lightroom, which cover a lot more ground between them – but there are still plenty of non-Adobe rivals that can match their scope.

If you want advanced black and white effects, retro/analog filters, HDR merging, or one of a dozen other specialized 'looks', you're often better off using a custom-made plug-in or a different application.

Remember, though, it's not just about the software. The best photo-editing laptops , desktop computers , and monitors for photo editing can help you process images quickly and accurately, while the best external hard drives store your finished works safely.

How we test photo editing software

Here are six factors we evaluate when testing photo editing software. Think of this as a checklist. You might not need all of these features, but we do take them into account in our reviews.

1. Powerful retouching, masking and compositing tools: This is traditional Photoshop territory, and if you need to create complex illustrations or carry out detailed retouching and repair work, a program like Photoshop (or Affinity Photo) is likely to be your first stop.

2. Image organizing and cataloguing tools: The more photos we take, the more organization they need. At the start of the digital imaging revolution the novelty of being able to edit images caught everyone's attention, but now the task of keeping images organized, searchable and shareable has become increasingly important.

3. Non-destructive editing: Do you have to process or 'develop' RAW files before you can edit them? In Photoshop you do, via Adobe Camera RAW, but an increasing number of rival programs offer seamless RAW processing alongside JPEG and TIFF images. What's more, you can 'roll back' or change your edits at any time.

4. High-quality raw processing: All RAW processing tools are NOT the same. Adobe's RAW processing (in Lightroom and Adobe Camera RAW) is used by millions, but the results certainly aren't the best. If RAW processing quality matters to you, then you'll want to know how well it works.

5. One-click creative presets: Very often, the problem for photographers is not knowing how to do something, but knowing WHAT to do. That's where programs with an extensive library of one-click presets can give you a real head-start, showing you how your images could look using adjustments you might not even have thought of.

6. Beginner friendliness: Software has certainly moved on and many photo editors are now much more novice-friendly than they used to be. The more technical photo editors on the market may offer more tools and give better results in expert hands, but if you're just starting out and you're baffled by all the jargon, a basic beginner-friendly program may be a much better choice than a more advanced one, even if, technically, it's not as good.

7. Value for money and buying options. When we look at software, we evaluate how it compares to similar programs on the market, and how you can pay for it. Subscriptions are unpopular with some, but that’s the way the world is heading. A few of the programs in our list are available as single-fee licenses, but more and more publishers favor subscriptions – Capture One looks to be choosing them in 2023, and Skylum has practically finished the transition

What is the best photo editing software for beginners?

A lot of the editing software on this list is an easy entry point for beginners getting into photography but offers a lot of powerful features as you progress your skills, allowing you to gradually unlock your editing potential as you go.

Adobe Lightroom CC and Luminar Neo are two of the easiest pieces of software to get started with as you begin your editing journey. Both have easy-to-understand user interfaces and offer a quick editing experience without having to drill down into different panels and advanced settings. However, both of these photo editors do offer a lot of advanced features when you are ready for them.

Do most photographers edit their photos?

The short answer is, yes. Most, if not all professional photographers apply some editing to their images, but the amount of editing varies for each photographer and what final image they are trying to create.

No camera is completely perfect, and there will usually always be a couple of very slight tweaks on lighting or color to make on any image. If a photographer's images look especially creative or stylized, then you can bet they have edited the image extensively.

Editing images is also a great way to add your own signature style and personality to an image and get future photos instantly recognized as yours. If every photographer used same the in-camera JPEG, wouldn't that be boring!

Best for photographers Adobe Photoshop Lightroom is the best software for quickly adjusting the exposure and color of photos, when digital alteration of images isn't required. As such it's great for photographers, but for pixel editing you'll want Photoshop.

Best for pros Photoshop is the ultimate image editing software if you're a professional user. It offers everything you'll need in a reasonably affordable package. It's primarily aimed at pros though and is quite complicated, so most people will be fine with Elements or Lightroom.

While there aren't a huge number of changes from last year's version, Adobe Photoshop Elements is our pick for best photo editing software overall for its ease of use, fun creativity and underlying power. While there's not much new from last year's version, Adobe's excellent interface and robust toolset— as well as the fact that Photoshop Elements works on both Macs and PCs—make it the best photo editing software around. 

As before, three interfaces (Guided Edits, Quick Edits, and Expert Mode) make this program accessible for users of all experience levels. Adobe's Sense AI can intelligently analyze and tweak your images, saving you a step or two if you're in a hurry. And, a new subject selection tool makes it easier to create cutouts of individuals and pets, and a Smooth Skin tool is great at getting rid of wrinkles. 

However, anyone needing a professional editing application will be better off going for a full Adobe Photoshop CC subscription.

In many ways, Corel PaintShop Pro is superior to Photoshop Elements, as it's a powerful program, yet is easy for novices to grasp, and has some additional tools, such as 360-degree photo editing. It's also touch-screen compatible and has a new streamlined workspace.  

PaintShop Pro (and the upgrade, PaintShop Pro Ultimate) are also usually much less expensive than Photoshop Elements, making it a bargain. The biggest knock against Corel vs. Photoshop is that while Photoshop Elements is available for both macOS and Windows PCs, PaintShop Pro is a Windows-only program.

Photographers who want to quickly and easily touch up batches of photos will find no better product than Adobe Lightroom. Available not just for Windows and Macs, but also Android and iOS devices, this cloud-based program allows you to access and edit your photos anywhere, on virtually any device.

Those who want to perform more extensive edits (such as removing unwanted objects or adding multiple layers, text, and more) would be better suited with Photoshop Elements or Photoshop CC, but if you want to efficiently make your photos look better, no matter where you are, Adobe Lightroom is the best photo editing software for the task.

The ultimate when it comes to photo editing software, Adobe Photoshop CC has it all. This latest version increasingly relies on Sensei, Adobe’s highly touted artificial intelligence engine, to facilitate a host of impressive features. The most high-profile of these include Sky Replacement, new Refine Edge selections. Plus, Neural Filters help simplify complex workflows.

Adobe Photoshop CC is available only as a subscription service; for $53 per month, you get Photoshop as part of an entire Creative Cloud package that also includes 20 CC desktop and mobile apps like Illustrator, Dreamweaver, Premier Pro, InDesign, After Effects, plus fonts and 100GB of cloud storage. The best cross-platform budget

Affinity Photo offers powerful tools, resolution-independent editing, RAW processing within the interface and most of the other features that professional photographers want and need — all for less than $50. In fact, the company is currently selling the software for $25, making it even more of a bargain. While its learning curve is steeper than most, you’ll be rewarded with a robust set of features, including Photoshop-like exposure controls, paintbrushes, layers and more. It can even open, read and edit Photoshop PSD files, making for a more seamless transition between the two programs. 

There's also support for Smart Objects, as well as additional third-party plugins, and Canon CR3 RAW files. And, like Photoshop Elements, Affinity Photo works on both Macs and PCs. There's even a version for iPads, too.

Novices be warned, though: there's a steep learning curve.

The best for sharing

6. google photos.

Google Photos is better than any other tool for organizing and consolidating all your photo libraries, no matter where they are — which is why it's on our list of the best photo storage services, too. It's cross-platform, syncs across all your devices, and can also be downloaded to Android and iOS devices, too, so it's available wherever you are. Unfortunately in June 2021, Google will no longer allow you to store an unlimited number of photos in the cloud; rather, they'll count against your 15GB Google Drive limit. 

However, in terms of editing tools, Google Photos offers only the barest minimum, helping you quickly prepare pictures for easy sharing. It does have facial recognition built in, so you can quickly search for all photos of a particular person. It also automatically tags photos by keyword, such as Sunset, Forests, Cars, and more, though you can't tag photos yourself, or add custom keywords. It’s best used in tandem with another app that offers greater editing features, such as Adobe Photoshop Elements.

The best for Mac users

7. apple photos.

iPhone, iPad, and Mac users looking for a simple, free photo editor would do well to check out Apple Photos. While not as robust as paid programs, Apple Photos offers plenty of tools for quickly touching up, tweaking, and sharing your pictures to family and friends. 

Apple Photos also makes collages of your photos based on subject, theme, or location, such as "Four-Legged Friends" and "Best of Last 2 Months." It can also identify faces, and let you search through photos based on themes such as Concerts, Weddings, but it's not as comprehensive as Google Photos. Because Apple Photos syncs in the cloud, you can also connect your photo and video library across multiple devices, and if you run out of room, iCloud storage isn't too expensive.

Serious photographers will want to opt for Lightroom, given its additional professional features like masking and healing, plus its workflow benefits. But for casual photography, Apple Photos is a great package.

The best open source

GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a free, open-source photo editor that's beloved by many for its ability to help you get under the hood and change the source code of the program to best fit your needs. GIMP also has a powerful set of editing tools, many of which are on a par with paid software. Some of these features include the ability to create and edit layers, special-effect filters; exposure controls; and more.

Because GIMP is open-source, there's a very active community of users who have created plugins to add even more functionality to the program. However, despite a more user-friendly interface than past versions, Gimp offers almost nothing in the way of guidance, which makes it much more difficult to learn than other photo-editing software. There's also an incredibly steep learning curve required when starting to use it.

How to choose the best photo editing software for you

When deciding on the best photo editing software, you'll first want to decide if you want to pay for it or not. Unless you're a professional photographer, your needs will be met with any number of programs that cost less than $100. And, if all you want to do is make your selfies, food pics, and photos of your pets look nicer, you can probably get away with a free photo editing program, or even the photo editing app on your smartphone. 

If you decide to go the paid route, you'll first want to make sure the program works on your laptop or desktop computer. Virtually all software is compatible with Windows machines, but far fewer will work on Macs. 

Last, you'll want to think about how experienced you are with photo editing. Adding filters is one thing, but adjusting contrast, paintbrushing and cloning objects, and making composite images is quite another. If you're a novice, consider photo editing software with guided edits, which will not only help you learn how to use the program, but teach you the fundamentals of editing, too.

What are the different type of image editors?

When considering which software package is right for you, you'll need to assess what you need from it, which boils down to two criteria. Do you need to edit and manipulate the digitally alter actual contents of the image? Such as adding in things that weren't originally there, or removing elements that were? If so, you'll need an image editor like Photoshop. 

If you just need to adjust the photos you have taken, for example by tweaking the exposure, contrast, highlights and shadows of a photo, or adjusting color temperature, you need photo studio software such as Lightroom or Apple Photos. These applications do not digital alter the images permanently in the same way as image editors like Photoshop.

In general, studio applications are best for photography, while image editing applications are best for things like digital content production.

View is easy to learn, has essential tools for editing RAW, esp. White Balance and Exposure, and then convert to TIFF or JPEG for further editing. Often heralded as the best free alternative to Photoshop, GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is an open-source application that relies on a community of volunteer developers who maintain and improve the product. It’s available for MacOS, Windows, and Linux . It provides many professional-level editing and retouching tools — perfect for designers who can’t or won’t shell out hundreds of dollars for Adobe Photoshop.

Once you launch the program, you’ll find a dedicated window that displays the image. You’ll also see two floating docks: One with the toolbox and another for managing layers, paths, brushes, and more.

When using a large display, or two monitors , you’ll have an expansive workspace to edit your images. Icons in the toolbox represent specific tools, like Scale, Pencil, Paintbrush, Airbrush, and more. You can apply numerous filters, too, such as dropping a shadow, adding a neon effect, adding a glass tile, removing devilish red eyes, and so on.

Overall, GIMP may feel like a free version of Photoshop , but it sports a unique look and experience. Making the jump from one to the other will take a little time, but you’ll save yourself a monthly subscription fee if you do.

Paint.NET is a case where the apprentice becomes the master. It was created as a college undergraduate senior’s “design project mentored by Microsoft,” Paint.NET . The software initially was developed as a no-cost substitute for Microsoft Paint, which comes standard with Microsoft’s Windows operating system. Paint.NET has surpassed Microsoft Paint in functionality and also provides more advanced features.

Paint.NET features an easy-to-understand user interface that supports layers, an unlimited undo tool to back out of any mistake no matter how disastrous, various special effects, and other utilities. While Microsoft Paint could do little more than resizing images, Paint.NET can handle advanced photo editing you’d expect only Photoshop and other paid programs could perform.  

Paint.NET is available as a free, traditional desktop program for Windows and a $10 app in the Microsoft Store.

If the above options seem too derivative or you want more of the Adobe experience without the associated price, Photoshop Express is another option worth considering. Although pared down compared to the premium Photoshop model, the Express variant does have several excellent options for editing photos with a much more gradual learning curve.

With an interface that betrays its mobile roots, Photoshop Express offers quick-and-easy access to slide bar adjustments and one-touch fixes for photos of all types. Details gives you control over sharpening and noise. You can also do things like crop, rotate, flip images, blur, remove red-eye, remove blemishes with the Spot Heal tool, and adjust the exposure.

Its file type support is limited to raw camera files, JPG and PNG files , but Photoshop Express is a freely available app that you can use on your Windows, iOS, or Android device without hassle.

Pixlr provides two tools you can access for free: Pixlr X (express) and Pixlr E (advanced). Both provide essential editing tools and limited layers. These tools are ad-supported, though you can upgrade to Plus ($2/month when paying monthly) or Premium ($8/month when paying monthly) to remove ads and unlock additional features.

In a Pixlr E vs. Pixlr X showdown, Pixlr X offers quicker editing and a simpler, user-friendly design. This software is accompanied by 12 essential tools, from drawing to applying filters, to cropping pictures.

Then there’s Pixlr E, a bare-bones photo editing software that gives you access to 24 useful tools. Users can easily draw shapes, blur, sharpen, or clone a photo, and much more.

Overall, the easiest way to access Pixlr is via its Pixlr X and Pixlr E web apps as described above. Pixlr’s website says you can also download desktop (for Windows) and Android apps.

Adobe might be better known for its more expensive Photoshop editing software, but you don’t have to break the bank to take advantage of Adobe-quality photo editing — especially if you know you’ll be doing most of your edits on a mobile device. With Adobe Lightroom on mobile , you can expect to make many of the adjustments you’d normally do with other editing apps: cropping, adjusting the lighting, customizing the color, or adding filters. The app itself is easy to navigate as it has a minimal interface with clearly labeled icons and simple-to-use sliders and toggles to help you quickly adjust certain aspects of your photos.

But Lightroom doesn’t just help you with the quality of your edits, it also has its own camera controls to help enhance the quality of the photos you take with your mobile device. Depending on your devices, you can choose from camera modes such as raw, HDR , and professional.

Some features are locked behind a paid subscription paywall, but you don’t need a subscription to use many of the editing tools.

Photo Pos Pro is a decent free photo editing option for Windows users. And the first thing you need to know is that the software really tries to emphasize ease of use and customizing the user experience. In fact, when you first open the software, you’ll be greeted with a series of questions about how you want to use the software. The most important question it will ask is when it prompts you to choose between two main interfaces (based on your own level of photo editing experience): An interface for experts (PRO) or one for newbies (Novice). And the interface you choose will determine how you’ll edit with the software going forward. (Don’t worry: Photo Pos Pro allows you to easily toggle between the two interfaces as needed.)

The PRO interface looks a bit like Photoshop and as expected comes with an abundance of advanced editing features. You can expect to see layers, curves, cropping, paint brushes, effects, rulers and grids, and color and lighting adjustment options. This interface is packed with tools for more intensive editing and as such, the interface can be a bit overwhelming with its many, small icons and various kinds of menus.

The Novice interface is best for beginners or just those who need to make a few quick edits to their photos. The interface is similar to what you would encounter with a simple desktop or mobile photo app: Just a bare-bones selection of features. In Photo Pos Pro, these features would include cropping, flipping and rotation, resizing, auto fix, color and light adjustments, deformation effects, and adding frames.

What is the easiest free photo-editing software to use?

The easiest free photo-editing software to use is Paint.NET, especially if you also need Photoshop-level editing capabilities. It perfectly combines a minimalist interface, a familiar simplistic layout, and many of the complex tools and features you can expect from higher-end photo editing software. The only software on our list that’s a close second for ease of use is the Adobe Lightroom mobile app, which doesn’t offer very many advanced editing tools.

Google’s latest smartphones put ai photo-editing in your hands, by tim biggs, save articles for later.

Google’s latest Pixel phones promise fast performance, killer cameras and a whole lot of powerful AI assistance. Sold at the premium price of $1200 and $1700 respectively, the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro may not be the frugal flagships some of their predecessors were, but they deliver on their promises and then some to offer the cleanest and nicest-to-use high-end Android experience you can get.

Where many smartphone-makers fill their software with cascading options and heaps of micro features, Pixels have always put a focus on attractive, understated design and proactively useful touches. The new Pixels are crammed full of stuff, it’s just that it tends to pop up when it’s required rather than being tucked away in menus or needing to be stacked all over your home screen.

The Pixel 8 has new cameras, more powerful AI and keeps the chunky camera bar.

As you might expect, a lot of Googly features are baked in and benefit greatly from the Pixel 8’s new Tensor G3 chip, which provides on-device machine learning. That includes fast and accurate voice-to-text for sending messages, interpreting other languages and automatically transcribing recordings, as well as powerful photo and video editing, and health-tracking via Fitbit. The tech even extends to using the device for old-fashioned phone calls, with great noise-cancelling that makes the caller sound clear and the ability to have Google Assistant screen your calls.

But while the Pixel 8s continue the tradition of putting the best of Google front and centre, and may be the best Androids on the market, they’re also a testing ground for new features and developments that don’t always feel ready for prime time.

Look and feel

Physically not a lot has changed from last year’s Pixel 7, with the new phones packing the familiar and wonderfully symmetrical chunky camera bar on the back. Both phones have great screens that can get phenomenally bright (2000 nits on the 8, 2400 on the Pro, though you’ll only get those maximum results in direct sun), and both have 120Hz refresh rates for very smooth scrolling and animation.

In fact, the two phones are the closest they’ve been since the introduction of the “Pro” moniker with the Pixel 6. The main differences are screen size (6.2 inches or 6.7 inches) and an extra camera, with the Pro packing a 5x telephoto lens in addition to the main shooter and ultra-wide. Oh yeah, and the Pixel 8 Pro has a thermometer.

I have to assume that Google intended this sensor to be for checking people’s foreheads, and then didn’t get the appropriate medical approval or gave up on the idea, because there’s no other reason for it to be there. When you use it for the first time you have to tick a box to say you understand it is not a medical device, and then you’re free to put it five centimetres in front of any object to check its temperature. It seems to work, but I couldn’t find a compelling use for it.

Despite a similar hardware design, Google’s own take on the new Android 14 software does a lot to give the Pixel 8s a fresh look. There are a lot of lock-screen styles to choose from, which double as always-on-display designs (I especially like the new one that puts the date and temperature against the phone’s longer sides), and the options to colour theme your phone, widgets and icons automatically to your wallpaper continue to impress.

Embedded in the top of the display is a little selfie shooter similar to last year’s, but it has a new trick thanks to AI, in that it can recognise you a lot more accurately. The change means you can authenticate banking apps and sign in to services with your face, just like you can on an iPhone, without a big black spot at the top of the phone. The one downside to Google’s approach here is it doesn’t work in the dark, so you still need a fingerprint or PIN.

The phone for photo AI

Speaking of AI, this year’s update is big on generative features, both obvious and subtle. One example of the former is the new “AI wallpaper” feature, which is a DALL-E style text-to-image generator but with a lot of limitations. Choose a theme, pick some keywords, wait 20 seconds and you’ll be given eight different options to choose from. They’re always fairly abstract and don’t stand up to close scrutiny — to be honest, I’d always prefer one of the many real photos or paintings from Google’s wallpaper collection — but as a gimmick it works and will only get better.

Google’s Best Take feature can swap people’s faces when you take multiple shots.

Generative AI is more present in the new Google Photos editing suite too, where it toes the line between allowing you to realise the intention of a photograph and letting you straight-up invent stuff. The marquee feature here is Magic Editor, which is scarily good at replacing a gloomy sky with a nice blue one, shifting the colours for a “golden” hour look, removing unwanted elements or even completely changing the composition.

For example, I grabbed an older photo of my two kids at mini golf, posing in the left of the frame. Behind them is a giant statue of a cartoon rhino, centre frame. In the Magic Editor I tapped one kid to select him, held down to edit, then dragged him over to the right of the frame. After processing, the image just looks like the kids were naturally standing either side of the rhino. The part where the repositioned kid used to be standing now has some convincing invented detail, including a bit of path, some scattered bark chips and one of the rhino’s hands. It even gives you a few options to choose from so you can pick the most natural. The feature is also great at enlarging the moon, or removing dead tree branches. But for whatever reason, any time I tried to change the size of a person I was told it was against the company’s ethics policy.

There’s also a feature called Best Take, which appears if you’ve taken a series of photos featuring a group of people. Pick one of the photos, and you can tap on each person’s face to cycle through the various expressions they made throughout the set, ending up with one picture featuring everyone’s best face. Like the Magic Editor it’s far from foolproof but can result in fakes nobody would pick at a glance.

To be honest, I can’t ever see myself using these tools on my own personal photos. I’m aware that some level of AI processing has been present in smartphone photography for a long time and is here to stay, but intentionally changing the content feels unnerving. That said, I can definitely see using it in place of Photoshop if I needed a specific edit of a non-human subject quickly.

For video, a new Audio Eraser will analyse clips for sounds and show a few of them as separate waveforms (for example, wind, speech or nature). Then you can watch and listen to the video while moving the levels around to cut out talking or annoying gusts. Like a lot of AI photo editing it works very well but leaves artefacts you’ll notice if you’re specifically looking for them. Other features, like a video enhancer that utilises Google’s cloud servers, are not present at the phones’ launch.

Comparing Apples and Androids

The new Pixels come hot on the heels of new iPhones, and the two families of devices share some similarities despite being fundamentally tough to compare. Google’s phones have been becoming more premium and expensive year over year, while Apple’s have been becoming more open — notably this year with the introduction of a USB-C port — so they’re closer to equivalent than ever.

Comparing the standard phones, Pixel 8 and iPhone 15, Google’s immediately stands out as more premium despite being $300 cheaper. They’re similar sizes and have similar camera set-ups, but Apple’s lacks a fast refresh and an always-on display. Under the hood Apple has also withheld some features from the standard iPhone that the Pixel happily supports, including USB 3.2 for much faster charging and data transfer, and autofocus on the ultra-wide camera which makes for a great close-up macro mode.

When it comes to the high end, Pixel 8 Pro against the iPhone 15 Pro Max, the gap is much closer though the prices are farther apart. (The iPhone starts at 256GB here, so a true like-for-like comparison would put the Pixel 8 Pro at $1800, but that’s still a $400 gap.)

The phones are evenly matched across almost all specs, though Apple has the strong advantage of an immensely powerful processor that outpaces the Pixel in raw strength. In cameras Google has opted for bigger sensors and more flexibility in editing, and the Pro has an excellent manual control mode, but Apple’s shots tend to be more pleasant for quick snaps since you can preset your preferred temperature and crop. When it comes to portrait mode and low light photography the Pixel is far more confident, and both phones now support adding a bokeh blur after the fact; Apple by capturing depth data when it detects a face and Google through the Magic Editor.

Both happily shoot 4K HDR video that looks amazing, though Apple supports Dolby Vision and ProRes which may suit professionals better.

iPhone users have access to a pretty full suite of Google products these days, and even features like the Magic Eraser have made their way from Pixel to iPhone, though the opposite is not true; those who choose Apple services tend to have a hard time on Android. The unique strength of the Pixel, then, is hardware that’s been specially tuned for Google’s AI tasks, and the latest in experimental features that may or may not become widely used in the future.

Still, putting the AI features aside these are still the nicest Pixels Google has yet produced, with some of the most genuinely useful features and best cameras you’ll find on an Android.
