  • Placement can be very specific for a level to register as completed. Listen for a ding to verify that things are placed right. If the level doesn't feature dings, keep slightly moving the object around until you get it.
  • If you're presented with a bunch of items, several having duplicates, you're probably looking at a symmetry level. Place the ones with no duplicates somewhere along the center line, and try to work from there.

  • Do not let the trays get too close to their intended positions, they will lock in place and cannot be moved after that.
  • Stack the largest trays on the bottom, with the smallest on top.
  • Place the food items in their intended positions on each tray as you move along, EXCEPT the apples. I just slapped the apples on top.
  • Food will fall off the trays, it's okay, just add them to the top later.
  • If you think everything is stacked and you have not yet triggered the achievement, grab the bottommost tray and slide it off of the center, food may have fallen off of your trays without you noticing, or maybe your tray shifted a bit too far. Return it to the center.

A Little To The Left review: everything in its right place

Confession: I'm a neat freak

I love tidying up in games, and I’m not just talking about playing Unpacking and House Flipper , either. Any game I play with an inventory gets a regular, satisfying purge. I’m either marching to an in-game shopkeeper and holding my adventuring sack upside down, or just swiftly frisbeeing items straight into the bin. If it’s cluttering my screen, it’s cluttering my mind. Zero regrets. That’s the gamer dopamine hit I’m chasing.

So, as you might have guessed, I love the idea of A Little To The Left , a game that celebrates neatness and tidiness through a string of fun puzzles. If you love the satisfaction of arranging books on your shelf in order of height, or displaying your mugs in order of which can hold the most tea, then you’ll love this game too. Some simple tidying puzzles would have been enough for me, but A Little To The Left takes the idea in interesting directions through smart puzzle design.

Cover image for YouTube video

Starting with the basics, you’re tasked with some simple tidying up like putting a stack of papers into a neat pile, before it ramps up to more organisational tasks like arranging a group of pencils in order of height. Often it’s more aesthetic, like sorting buttons by colour. But wait. Can’t the buttons be organised in other ways too? What about size? By how many holes? And shape? Ahhhh. It's a moment of pure panic that A Little To The Left takes in its stride, as many puzzles do have multiple solutions. Whatever way you decide to sort the buttons you’ll still get your gold star, A for effort. Then it’s onto the next puzzle.

I really love this approach to organising. A Little To The Left understands that everyone has their own ways of tidying (as Alice0 found out when she played the demo back in May ). Most of the time, you’ll understand exactly what you need to do from a brief glance at the objects in front of you, but others require a little more poking around. Some of my favourites were themed around pattern spotting: arranging a set of postcards to make a landscape scene; organising a group of sticky notes so they show one, long squiggle.

A shelf of books from the rearranging game A Little To The Left. They are all out of height order and this needs to be addressed.

Some puzzles, however, were a little too abstract and it ruined the overall zen-vibe of the game. One tasked me with picking the leaves off a bunch of branches but I couldn't figure out which ones needed plucking (nothing looked withered or an off-yellow colour). Each time I clicked on a wrong leaf, it would magically sprout back.

a little to left

Any tidying philosophy or logic was seemingly thrown out the window, instead replaced by me aimless clicking around the screen. Turns out that it was a mirror puzzle where you needed to make the left side of the screen look like the right (shout out to Alice.B for helping me see the light). I guess not understanding exactly what the puzzle wanted is more on me than the game, but even when there's a hiccup or miscommunication, it's one out of the 70-ish puzzles it's in no way a big deal. There's still plenty of variety in the game’s puzzles that keep it from feeling like a long list of monotonous chores, even though that's pretty much exactly what you're doing. Gasp. Tricked into doing housework. The nerve.

The puzzles also feel incredibly tactile. Putting pins in a pinboard has a satisfying push, placing cutlery in a draw has a brilliant rattle, and there’s even a bit in the game where you're just peeling those tiny sticker-labels off pieces of fruit. It's not even a puzzle of any sort, but the satisfaction of each peel still feels just as good. Is there anyone in the world who doesn’t love peeling those off?

a little to left

Occasionally, your tidying will be interrupted by the paw of a mischievous cat, wrecking your efforts with one deadly swipe - the papers you neatly stacked now strewn about the desk and the precisely placed cutlery on a dinner table now in total disarray. The cat, or as I like to call her, the destroyer of all things beautiful, queen of chaos, high priestess of mayhem, is a fun addition and provides a cute rivalry between a human neat freak and a creature of pure anarchy.

Even with the addition of a furry creature who wants to see the whole world burn to the ground, the vibe of the game remains totally laid-back. If you're having trouble with a puzzle you can use the games hint system to help you out in the form of a notebook where you use an eraser on a scribble to reveal the correct solution underneath. There’s even a ‘Let It Be’ option that skips the puzzle all together if it’s too tough or you’re not vibing with it. A Little To The Left wants you to find the fun in tidying up, not the frustrations.

a little to left

A Little To The Left surpassed my tidying expectations. Feeling that jolt of satisfaction never gets tired, and the sheer variety of puzzles keeps things interesting. It’s a game with lots of little surprises, right up until the very end where the game takes a surprising, but welcome, magical realist turn. With its charming visuals and playfuy soundtrack, its a puzzle game that feels like the complete package.

A Little to the Left is the perfect calming game to wind down with

Set your house right with an array of simple puzzles after your cat does what cats do and knocks everything on the floor..

Key art from A Little to the Left featuring a broken plate and cat paw prints and the silhouette of a cat over the words “A Little to the Left”

A lot of the games that I loved at Summer Game Fest are slowly starting to make their way into the wider world beyond previews and demos. A Little to the Left is one of those games — and I could not be more jazzed to tell you about it.

A Little to the Left — ALTTL for short — is one of those quiet and peaceful indie games that conceal complex design behind a deceptively simple premise. In it, you’re tasked with setting right your home after the entropy of life (and a very mischievous cat) have mucked it up. To do that, you repair, replace, and reorder household objects in a series of bite-sized puzzles.

In one puzzle, you might have a scattered array of broken pottery pieces that you must order correctly to repair a broken vase. In another, you might have to arrange a table setting while dodging swipes from your cat’s curious claws.

Puzzle games have been my jam, jelly, and preserves of late. And one thing that separates A Little to the Left from other puzzle games is that it offers the same kind of brain engagement without being too mentally taxing. Sometimes puzzle games can be overstimulating — my play-through of Oddworld: Soulstorm comes to mind. I enjoyed that game, but it burned me up like a fever, and right now, with everything going on , I’ve had my fill of fire, but I still want the same kind of mental massage puzzle games provide. A Little to the Left gives me the kind of mental brain scratch that I love about puzzle games without gouging out bits of grey matter.

Screenshot from A Little to the Left featuring a disorganized junk drawer with candles, measuring tape, paper clips, pens, and more strewn to the side that the player must order

The game is designed such that it’s easy to pick up and put down at my leisure. It’s also not too easy. I dinged Sonic Frontiers for challenges that didn’t amount to more than “step on this” or “circle this.” ALTTL seems simple, and some puzzles are, but a lot can be as complex as you want to make them since many have more than one solution.

In one puzzle, you can put a shelf of books back in order either by size or make a complete picture with the decorations on the books’ spines. The game rewards unconventional thinking, which is great for me as a person who has a tendency to see a more complicated solution before the simple one.

But there are times when I can’t see any solution, and rather than be stuck, ALTTL includes the ability to skip a puzzle that’s giving you grief. I’m loath to ascribe motive to the developers or their thoughts about mental illness in making this game, but the fact that ALTTL frames skipping a puzzle not as “skipping” or “passing,” thereby potentially creating a feeling of incompleteness, but as “letting it be,” speaks to me as a thoughtful little nod to folks with attention disorders. I’m one of those people who get annoyed with seeing 99/100, and even though there’s no screen I’ve found in ALTTL that displays your stats, I’m comforted in knowing that, like that pile of clean clothes on my chair, I will get to those peskier puzzles when I can.

Screenshot from A Little to the Left featuring an assortment of household cleaners that the player must put in the right order

ALTTL also features a neat “Daily Tidy” puzzle whereby you can do a daily puzzle, earning rewards the more often you complete them. It’s kinda like Duolingo’s streak feature without the menace of that green bird breathing down your neck. The daily tidy puzzles seem harder to me than the main game, and there is no hint option, so for folks really looking for a challenge, daily tidy puzzles are for you.

One of my favorite things to do, especially as the weather gets colder, is to just sit on my couch with my animals and my human in silence. My husband is looking up sports scores, my cat is begging for food, and my dog is sleeping and farting himself awake while I play something simple just to wind down from the day. A Little to the Left is the perfect little puzzle game for those quiet, peaceful hours between dinner and bedtime.

A Little to the Left is out now on PC, Mac, and Nintendo Switch.

A Little to the Left: Seeing Stars DLC review – left a little wanting

Georgina young | jul 2, 2024.

A Little to the Left

I’m a neat freak. There’s something so beautifully satisfying about organizing things so they all fit perfectly in position, but in reality, they so rarely do. This is where A Little to the Left comes in with its perfectly prepared puzzles, where every tiny piece has a place. I reviewed the base game almost exactly a year ago, when the first DLC came out – you can check out my A Little to the Left + Cupboards and Drawers DLC review here – so it only felt right to come back for Seeing Stars, the latest content update. Unfortunately, while there were more cats than before, it wasn’t quite as satisfying.

Aside from introducing a number of new puzzles with 100 different solutions, there are a few new mechanics. Many of the puzzles have five possible solutions, which is an interesting way to see each level from a new perspective. The base game has a hint system where you can look at part or all of one possible solution. It was an elegant way of preventing people from getting frustrated, while also encouraging them to look for more themselves. The hint system has been upgraded to show each possible solution, but it's not intuitive how to change the solution shown – there's a folded corner on the hint page for those wondering – and so I couldn't use it during my playthrough.

 A Little to the Left

This wasn’t the only thing I found not to work as expected. When pressing Let it Be in the menu, it should pause your puzzle solving, however, I found when I returned to the puzzle, it would return to the start from the beginning. This can be annoying when some puzzles are particularly long to solve because of the number of moving pieces. After you find a solution you are taken back to the start of the puzzle, which is annoying by itself, but more annoying as if you accidentally ‘solve’ the puzzle –such as moving pieces to create a solution you’ve found before – and you are forced to restart the puzzle from the beginning.

There are some interesting new ways of puzzle solving, though. Some puzzles are drawer-based with items that can change shape, and manipulating them will create new ways of fitting them neatly in the drawers. This not only made each puzzle more difficult as each item can fit in multiple areas, but had me thinking about multiple solutions at the same time. These are my favorite types of puzzles as there is something deeply satisfying about everything fitting exactly as it should. There were other puzzles that surprised me by letting me manipulate items in ways that weren't immediately obvious. It reminded me of just how clever it can be at its best.

 A Little to the Left

I enjoyed my time with Seeing Stars but found it was not as visually satisfying as the base game and first DLC. While I could understand certain solutions, I felt less smug when I looked at them afterwards. There is something beautiful about a perfectly organized shelf, and Seeing Stars isn’t filled with as much symmetry, things fitted neatly into spaces, and perfectly measured gaps. If you enjoyed the base game, you’ll still want to play the DLC as it gives you more of what you love, it just doesn’t offer the big changes and quality of life options we were hoping for.

Not to bad but….

It’s a good game but there’s sutch a small time limit
When I downloaded it, the name changed to “Little Star Down”. It’s written in broken English with some non English texts. Instructions are unclear also. I downloaded this after seeing someone play it online. The online version must be 30x better than this garbage.

Jack smith and fani willis have ‘little left’ to throw at trump after immunity ruling.

The Supreme Court’s decision on presidential immunity Monday made it more difficult for both special counsel Jack Smith and Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis to prosecute former President Donald Trump , throwing their indictments into serious question.

The decision, which  found  former presidents are entitled to “at least presumptive immunity” from prosecution for all “official acts,” will force Smith to go back to the drawing board as Judge Tanya Chutkan weighs which portions of the indictment fall into that category and are covered by immunity.

dailycallerlogo

The process not only means a trial before the election is a virtual impossibility, but paired with another ruling this term on the obstruction statute connected to two charges in the indictment, it likely will leave Smith with little more than a shell of a case.

“I think it could take several months for the trial court to decide what are official and unofficial acts,” University of California, Berkeley law professor and former President George W. Bush Department of Justice official John Yoo told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “Both sides must have a fair chance to research and argue the issue before the judge undertakes her analysis.”

When paired with the Fischer v. United States  case , where the Supreme Court majority found the DOJ’s interpretation of an obstruction statute used to charge hundreds of Jan. 6 defendants and connected to two counts of Trump’s indictment too expansive, Yoo told the Daily Caller News Foundation there is “little left” of Smith’s case.

Yoo  argued  in a recent Fox News column President Joe Biden and Attorney General Merrick  Garland  would “be wise to shut down the special counsel investigation, blame its failures on the Supreme Court, and leave the question of Trump’s responsibility up to the people in November.”

John Malcolm, vice president for The Heritage Foundation’s Institute for Constitutional Government, told the Daily Caller News Foundation it is “very unclear” whether any viable charges “remain against Trump in either D.C. or Atlanta.”

“Judge Tanya Chutkan certainly has her work cut out for her,” he told the Daily Caller News Foundation.

The Fischer ruling alone makes it “hard to see” how the two charges alleging Trump “obstructed, attempted to obstruct, and conspired to obstruct an official proceeding” will survive, he said.

“As to the immunity decision, the court essentially ordered Chutkan to dismiss all charges pertaining to Trump’s conversations with Justice Department officials, and made clear that he would also enjoy immunity for any actions he undertook while in office that were within the ‘outer perimeter’ of his authority as president,” Malcolm continued.

The case was on hold for months as Trump’s appeal was pending before the Supreme Court, forcing Chutkan to  cancel  the initially scheduled March 4 trial date. While a trial almost certainly won’t be rescheduled before the election, it’s possible that Chutkan will schedule a public hearing on the immunity issue in the coming month that enables prosecutors to present some of their evidence against Trump, The New York Times  reported  Monday.

The immunity ruling impacts more than the federal election interference case brought by Smith: it impacts every one of Trump’s criminal cases.

Though it’s already on hold while Trump and his co-defendants seek to disqualify Willis over her “improper” relationship with the special prosecutor she appointed, the immunity ruling likewise spells bad news for her case against Trump in Georgia .

“The [immunity] holding applies to all cases, so it would require that state DAs survive the same test that they are prosecuting a president for non-official acts,” Yoo told the Daily Caller News Foundation.

As for Smith’s Florida classified documents case, Malcolm explained that the “removal of some of the documents in question from the White House may be deemed [an] official act.”

“This will also present a problem for special counsel Jack Smith, assuming that the judge does not rule that the case should be dismissed altogether because his appointment to the position violated the appointments clause and was, therefore, unconstitutional,” he said.

In a concurring opinion, Justice Clarence Thomas  questioned  the constitutionality of Smith’s appointment, writing he is “not sure that the office for Special Counsel has been ‘established by Law,’ as the Constitution requires.”

“If there is no law establishing the office that the Special Counsel occupies, then he cannot proceed with this prosecution,” Thomas wrote. “A private citizen cannot criminally prosecute anyone, let alone a former President.”

Judge Aileen Cannon recently held hearings in Florida to consider the  issue .

The immunity decision has  already  had an impact on Trump’s Manhattan case, where a jury  convicted  him in May on 34 counts of falsifying business records. Judge Juan Merchan agreed Tuesday to move Trump’s sentencing date from July to September after his attorneys argued the ruling means the verdict should be set aside.

Investigation underway after 4-year-old left unattended in vehicle dies in NW Houston

Christian Terry , Digital Content Producer

HOUSTON – Police are investigating after a 4-year-old girl died after being left unattended in a vehicle in northwest Houston.

The Houston Police Department said it happened in the 6500 block of Hollister Rd. near Wilshire Pl. Dr.

According to Lt. Larry Crowson with HPD, police were called around 6:30 p.m. on a report of a child who was in a car and having a heat-related illness.

Officers and the Houston Fire Department responded. They arrived and found the girl in a pickup truck. She was rushed to the hospital, where investigators say she passed away.

According to Crowson, two women and a total of three children were initially in the pickup truck. They got out and went inside an apartment.

“Apparently in the confusion, they left the 4-year-old female in the truck. Once they discovered the child was missing, they went back outside, found the child and called the police department and the fire department,” Crowson said.

Officers are currently looking for surveillance video of the incident. Once the investigation is completed, the case will be turned over to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office who will decide whether any charges are filed.

Crowson stressed the importance of being aware of your children’s location and noted it only takes a few minutes in this weather for heat-related illness to strike.

“Be very cognizant of where your children are. It’s very easy to get confused and lose track but you know it is very important that you don’t. In this type of weather, it doesn’t take but a few minutes for the heat to cause very serious illness or death to someone that’s left in a car,” he said.

Driver, 2 passengers killed in fiery transit bus crash on Pennsylvania bypass: Police

A crash between a bus and a truck on a Pennsylvania bypass Tuesday morning has left three people dead.

According to the Upper Providence Township Police Department, first responders were dispatched to US Route 1 Media Bypass in Delaware County near Route 252 around 8:00 a.m. local time after receiving a report of a vehicle on fire.

There, police and paramedics found a medium-sized transit bus "fully involved in flames," police said. It collided with a truck that had a roll-on container.

The victims, identified as the bus driver and two passengers, died on the scene. Officials did not publicly name them because they were notifying the families. CBS News reported that the driver was 31 years old, and the passengers were 60 and 75 years old.

"Please say a little prayer for all involved," police said in a statement.

Police said the driver was "heavily trapped in the wreckage" at the scene. Other drivers helped get the passengers out from the back of the bus, but they succumbed to their injuries before first responders arrived.

The truck driver survived and was taken to the hospital for minor injuries.

The fatal crash is under investigation by the Upper Providence Township Police Department and Delaware County Criminal Investigation Division.

According to CBS News, officials are gathering video footage and other technology from the bus and truck to figure out the cause. However, it could be damaged.

Nick Miccarelli, the CEO of the bus linked to the crash, told the outlet that the driver had a clean record and had worked for DELGO Community Transit for nine months .

"It's brutal," Miccarelli added. "We pride ourselves on safely delivering our clients. That didn't happen today."

Hurricane Beryl strengthens back into a Category 3 storm as it nears Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula

A heat advisory in effect for 7 regions in the area, video captures shooting that cops say left 1 dead, 1 injured in little haiti, police id shooting victim as 24-year-old andre mitchell.

MIAMI – Local 10 News obtained exclusive surveillance video from a source Tuesday showing a dramatic shootout in Miami’s Little Haiti neighborhood that police say left one man dead, and another victim injured on Monday evening.

Authorities said the video captured a dark-colored car stopping in front of a bakery along Northwest Second Avenue and 52nd Street around 6:45 p.m.

A man in red is seen exiting the vehicle and firing at a passing car before someone in another vehicle traveling behind fired back, according to investigators.

The exchange of gunfire sent dust and debris into the air, leaving the side of a nearby empanada business riddled with bullet holes.

In the end, two people were hit, with one later dying at a nearby hospital. The victim has been identified as 24-year-old Andre Mitchell and the other shooting victim remains in critical but stable condition as of Tuesday evening, according to police.

The deadly shootout occurred hours after another fatal shooting occurred on Monday in Liberty City at Northwest Seventh Avenue and 58th Street.

In that shooting, Miami police said they found a man, who they identified as 20-year-old Treyshawn Wright, shot to death near a black SUV, which was also covered in bullet holes.

“Doom doom doom, it died down and then the rest of them came rapidly,” a witness told Local 10 News moments after the shooting occurred.

There were several bullet holes in the front of a black SUV at that scene.

While the exact motives for the shootings remain unclear, detectives confirm that both cases could be gang-related, involving members of two rival gangs.

There has been no word of any arrests or if officers are seeking any suspects or persons of interest.

Police said three people were detained as possible witnesses following the shooting in Little Haiti, but not as suspects.

Anyone with information on either shooting is urged to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.

Hurricane Beryl, a Category 3 storm, heads toward Mexican resort of Tulum after lashing Jamaica

Updated on: July 5, 2024 / 2:56 AM EDT / CBS/AP

Hurricane Beryl strengthened back into a Category 3 storm and headed for what could be a direct hit on Mexico's Caribbean coast resort of Tulum early Friday, where authorities urged tourists to leave white sand beaches.

Beryl was the earliest Category 5 hurricane in the Atlantic before weakening to a Category 2 storm. But it regained strength late Thursday with windspeeds of 115 mph as it neared landfall over Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador issued a statement late Thursday saying Beryl may make a direct hit on Tulum which, while smaller than Cancun, still has thousands of tourists and residents.

"It is recommendable that people get to higher ground, shelters or the homes of friends or family elsewhere," López Obrador wrote. "Don't hesitate, material possessions can be replaced."

Once a sleepy, laid-back village, Tulum has boomed in recent years with unrestrained development and now has about 50,000 permanent inhabitants and at least as many tourists on an average day. The resort now has its own international airport, but it's largely low-lying, just a few yards above sea level.

As Friday began, the storm's center was about 90 miles southeast of Tulum and was moving west at 16 mph, the hurricane center said.

Beryl was expected to weaken Friday as it crossed over the Yucatan Peninsula and re-emerge over the Gulf of Mexico, where the surprisingly resilient storm could once again become a hurricane and make a second landfall around Mexico's border with Texas next week.

Tulum bracing for Hurricane Beryl

As the wind began gusting over Tulum's beaches, four-wheelers with megaphones rolled along the sand telling people to leave. Tourists snapped photos of the growing surf, but military personnel urged them to leave.

TORMENTAS

Authorities around the peninsula have prepared shelters, evacuated some small outlying coastal communities and even moved sea turtle eggs off beaches threatened by storm surge. In Tulum, authorities shut things down and evacuated beachside hotels.

Francisco Bencomo, general manager of Hotel Umi in Tulum, said all its guests had left.

"With these conditions, we'll be completely locked down," he said, adding there were no plans to have guests return before July 10.

"We've cut the gas and electricity. We also have an emergency floor where two maintenance employees will be locking down," he said from the hotel. "We have them staying in the room farthest from the beach and windows."

"I hope we have the least impact possible on the hotel, that the hurricane moves quickly through Tulum, and that it's nothing serious," he said.

Hurricane Beryl

Tourists were also taking precautions. Lara Marsters, 54, a therapist visiting Tulum from Boise, Idaho, said "this morning we woke up and just filled all of our empty water bottles with water from the tap and put it in the freezer ... so we will have water to flush the toilet."

"We expect that the power will go out," Marsters said. "We're going to hunker down and stay safe."

Myriam Setra, a 34-year-old tourist from Dallas, was eating a sandwich on the beach earlier Thursday, saying "figured we'd get the last of the sun in today, too. And then it's just going to be hunker down and just stay indoors until hopefully it passes."

But once Beryl re-emerges into the Gulf, forecasters say, it's again expected to build to hurricane strength and could hit right around the Mexico-U.S. border, at Matamoros. That area was already soaked last month by Tropical Storm Alberto .

Velázquez said temporary storm shelters were in place at schools and hotels but efforts to evacuate a few highly exposed villages - like Punta Allen, which sits on a narrow spit of land south of Tulum - and Mahahual, further south - had been only partially successful.

Earlier, Beryl wreaked havoc in the Caribbean  and was blamed for several deaths. The hurricane damaged or destroyed 95% of homes on a pair of islands in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, jumbled fishing boats in Barbados and ripped off roofs and knocked out electricity in Jamaica.

Will Hurricane Beryl hit Texas?

CBS affiliate KHOU-TV reported  that whether Beryl  crashes into Texas  depends on how much strength it loses as it goes over land, as well as conditions in the Gulf of Mexico in the coming days.

"Beryl is expected to emerge over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico Friday night and move northwestward toward northeastern Mexico and southern Texas late in the weekend," the hurricane center said Thursday evening.

One key factor will be how wind shear affects Beryl.

"Will Beryl maintain a Cat. 1 hurricane strength as it makes landfall in the Yucatan?" KHOU-TV meteorologist Kim Castro asked. "Or will the unfavorable conditions -- more sheared winds in the Caribbean -- help weaken it enough that it's not much of anything when it gets to the Gulf."

The hurricane center urged people in southern Texas to monitor Beryl's progress.

Beryl leaves trail of damage, destruction

Beryl's worst damage may be in its wake. Its eye wall brushed by Jamaica's southern coast on Wednesday afternoon while on Thursday morning, telephone poles and trees were blocking the roadways in Kingston.

Authorities confirmed a young man died on Wednesday after he was swept into a storm water drain while trying to retrieve a ball. A woman also died after a house collapsed on her.

Residents took advantage of a break in the rain to begin clearing debris.

Sixty percent of the island remained without electricity, along with a lack of water and limited telecommunications. Government officials were assessing the damage, but it was hampered by the lack of communication, mainly in southern parishes that suffered the most damage.

Some 1,432 people remained in shelters in Jamaica, like Desrine Campbell, a resident of the low-lying community of Old Harbour Bay, who wailed, "My house is almost flooded!"

Nearby, Carlton Golding said ruefully, "I lost everything this time." Golding's house was totally destroyed by the hurricane, the second time that he has suffered damage from storms.

In the south-central parish of Clarendon, residents attempted to mend damaged roofs and clear downed trees. Many roadways in the area remained partially blocked from downed electricity and telecommunication poles.

The premier of the Cayman Islands, Juliana O'Connor, thanked residents and visitors Thursday for contributing to the "collective calm" ahead of Beryl by following storm protocols.

Michelle Forbes, the St. Vincent and Grenadines director of the National Emergency Management Organization, said that about 95% of homes in Mayreau and Union Island have been damaged by Hurricane Beryl.

Barbados Hurricane Beryl damage

Three people were reported killed in Grenada and Carriacou and another in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, officials said. Three other deaths were reported in northern Venezuela, where four people were missing, officials said.

One fatality in Grenada occurred after a tree fell on a house, Kerryne James, the environment minister, told The Associated Press.

St. Vincent and the Grenadines Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves has promised to rebuild the archipelago.

Historic hurricane

Beryl was the earliest Category 5 hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic basin, and was only the second Category 5 storm recorded in July since 2005, according to the hurricane center.

It took Beryl only 42 hours to strengthen from a tropical depression to a major hurricane, which is a  Category 3 storm or higher  — a feat accomplished only six other times in Atlantic hurricane history, and with Sept. 1 as the earliest date, according to hurricane expert Sam Lillo.

Beryl was also the third Category 3 hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic in June, following Audrey in 1957 and Alma in 1966, hurricane specialist and storm surge expert Michael Lowry said.

"Beryl is an extremely dangerous and rare hurricane for this time of year in this area," he told the AP in a phone interview earlier this week. "Unusual is an understatement," he said, calling Beryl historic.

Hurricane Ivan in 2004 was the last strongest hurricane to hit the southeast Caribbean, causing catastrophic damage in Grenada as a Category 3 storm.

"So this is a serious threat, a very serious threat," Lowry said of Beryl.

Beryl is the second named storm in what is predicted to be a busy hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to Nov. 30 in the Atlantic. Last week, Tropical Storm Alberto brought torrential flooding to portions of southern Texas and northeastern Mexico. It was responsible for at least four deaths in the Mexican states of Nuevo Leon and Veracruz.

According to CBS News weather producer David Parkinson, Beryl is the farthest east a hurricane has formed in June, and one of only two to do so east of the Caribbean, with the other instance occurring in 1933. Parkinson expects Beryl to remain south of Jamaica, and forecasts that any U.S. impacts are still at least eight days away.

Warm waters are fueling Beryl, with ocean heat content in the deep Atlantic the highest on record for this time of year , according to Brian McNoldy, University of Miami tropical meteorology researcher.

A bridge near a Minnesota dam may collapse. Officials say they can do little to stop it

a little to left

Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Rushing waters from the Blue Earth River have already left a trail of debris and destruction on the edges of a southern Minnesota dam that partially failed last week. Officials acknowledged Tuesday the structure most in danger may be the bridge that looms nearby. They say the County Road 9 Bridge is at risk of crumbling and little can be done. The threat to the bridge began when a bout of heavy rain and flooding pummeled the Midwest for days. Officials are warily watching both the dam and the bridge. They are noting that the still-surging river has drastically changed the area.
