Mini-pat design a life-saving tool

This chapter is a formal assessment task. It will count for 70% of your term mark.

It is a good idea to make a few trial designs before you make the final model. There is a lot to find out, to think about, to plan and to prepare before you can even start with a project. For the next two and a half weeks, you will design and make a mechanical tool. You will design it in such a way that it solves a particular problem.

Work alone, and only at school. Your teacher will assess your work.

Last weekend, there was an accident just outside town. A car lost control, went off the road and toppled over. Two people were trapped inside the crashed car. They were badly injured, but still alive. Because the metal body of the car was bent, the doors could not open.

An ambulance with paramedics arrived to help the trapped people. But the paramedics could not get them out of the crumpled car in time to give them medical treatment or to take them to the hospital. So the two people inside the car died from their injuries.

Incidents like this are very sad. Many peoples' lives could be saved if it was possible to remove them from car wrecks in time to get medical help.

Paramedics are people who are trained in first aid. They can do many things that doctors can do.

If the paramedics had the Jaws of Life tools with them, they could have cut or bent the car doors open with these tools to remove the injured people. Then they could have given medical help to the injured people, and the story would have had a happier ending.

Another way to move objects from a distance (30 minutes)

You will now learn how you can use syringes to make things move. This wil help you to design tools that can be used by rescue workers at accident scenes.

When you worked with levers, you learnt the following:

A push can be made stronger or weaker by using a lever. In other words, a lever can give you a mechanical advantage.

A movement can be made smaller or bigger by using a lever.

The direction of movement can be changed by using a lever.

You can also change and control movement by using syringes.

What do you feel when you push the plunger now?

What do you think prevents the plunger from going all the way in when you push it hard?

Do you think there is something in the syringe that you cannot see?

To compress means to make something smaller. When you pressed the plunger in while keeping the outlet closed, you compressed the air inside the syringe. That means you forced the air molecules to move closer together.

Do you think you can use a syringe to push something without touching it? Try to do it.

Connect two syringes with a plastic tube, as shown below.

Find out whether your can move small objects by pushing one plunger in.

A pushing device made with syringes and pipe that is filled with air, is called a pneumatic mechanism. There are also other types of hydraulic mechanisms.

The word "pneumatic" is used to indicate that gas is used to push something.

What do you feel when you press the plunger in and try to move the pile of books with your pneumatic mechanism?

When you use a pneumatic pushing device to try to move an object, you cannot press very hard, because only a small force is needed to compress the air. You can only press with a big force once the air is already very much compressed, when the plunger is pressed almost fully in. Do you think the same thing will happen if there is water in the cylinders instead of gas?

Fill a syringe with water to investigate this.

Do you think you can compress the water just like you compressed the air? Try it. Describe the difference you notice between using air in the syringe, and water in the syringe.

A liquid cannot be compressed.

It is slightly difficult to get the air bubbles out when you fill two connected syringes with water. The pictures on page 88 show us how this can be done.

When there is air or other gases in a device like this, it is called a pneumatic mechanism. When there is water or some other liquid like oil in the cylinders and connecting pipe, it is called a hydraulic mechanism.

What would give the strongest push with the same two syringes, air or water? How can you investigate this?

How many books can you put on top of each other and still be able to push it with your pneumatic pushing device?

Why do you think a hydraulic pushing device provides a stronger push than a pneumatic pushing device?

To experience the difference between pneumatic and hydraulic pushing devices, hold the two plungers of a pushing device in your hands and push the plungers from both sides.

Do this while the syringes are filled with air. Also do it while the syringes are filled with water.

What difference do you feel between the pneumatic pushing device and the hydraulic pushing device?

Explain why pneumatic and hydraulic pushing devices act differently.

Suppose you use a strong stick or metal rod as a lever to move a brick or other heavy object. If the fulcrum is exactly in the middle of the stick, and you push the one end 5 cm, how far will the other end move?

Questions (a) to (c) will help you to understand what the word specifications means.

Constraints are limits to what can possibly work. For example, the fact that a shopping bag can break when it is loaded too heavily is a contraint. Also, if you have a limited amount of time to build something, it is called a constraint.

Sketch a possible design of the rescue tool. You can make a simple or a difficult model, as long as you do it well. It is fine if your model only demonstrates how the tool will work, even if the model itself does not work.

Think of the different types of Jaws of Life rescue tools. You have to choose and make only one type of rescue tool .

Label your drawing to show the different parts, and what the parts are made of. Also show where the syringes that form the hydraulic system will go.

Make a list of all the materials you plan to use to build your model. You have listed them under "specifications" in the previous lesson. Add any other materials that you will be using.

The Neighbourhood Watch scheme has also been introduced recently and this has helped people feel more secure. However, even though neighbours will keep an eye on your property if you decide to go out and leave the house empty, they cannot watch twenty four hours a day.

Often even the police ignore house alarms when they are activated because of the high number of false alarms.

The device will be mobile so that it can be moved from room to room, easy to set up and control and also cheap to make. It must not be powered by mains voltage and in this way it will be completely safe to be left ‘on’ for a long time and will not be affected by power cuts. It will be activated by anyone approaching the hose from the front or back.

It must deter even profession crooks from taking an interest in our house and even convince people in the street that the house is occupied.

 

 

The brief and problem shown below has been produced for a project based on an educational toy.

The brief and problem is mainly text (writing) that is printed in a clear style so that it can be read and understood easily.
The problem is a paragraph or more in length. It describes the problem you are aiming to solve. Do not say how you intend to solve the problem, only what the problem is. If you have been given a examination question as your design project, add more detail. The example opposite is based on the following examination question:
“Design and make an educational device for young children. It must improve hand and eye coordination”.
The problem written opposite is a more detailed and imaginative way of writing the examination question. A pedestrian crossing simulator has been selected by the pupil as the educational device.
The first sentence should state the problem, adding more detail with the following sentences.
If the examination question does not name the product that has to be designed and made (such as an educational device) - you can mention an area that you are interested in. This could include, jigsaws, puzzles or something that could be adapted as an educational device.


Always start the design brief with “I am going to design and make .....”. This is followed by a general description of the type of device you feel will answer the design problem.
Do not be too specific. The brief should be a general description that allows you flexibility regarding the type of product you intend to make. For example, if your are designing an automatic animal feeder it may be a good idea not to say the type of animal it is for, at least not at this stage in the project.
Do not be specific about materials. It may be wise to avoid stating the exact materials it will be manufactured from (eg. pine, steel, perspex etc...). Instead describe the materials to be used as strong, tough, flexible, natural, manmade, recycled, water-proof or similar general descriptions.
Mention points such as; safety, general size, what it will do (it’s functions), general properties of the materials needed, who it is for (eg children), basic cost of manufacture or a lower and upper cost limits, circuit requirements and other points you feel are important.

Ask your friends and relatives. They may have a few suggestions about design problems you can solve that will help them.
Do not be over ambitious. Do not select a design problem that is too complex.
Ask the teacher for advice and look at completed projects for inspiration.

Very young children have poor hand/eye coordination - they have difficulty picking items up. Encouraging children to develop good hand/eye coordination skills is important.

All companies have markets for their products. A market is usually composed of customers of a particular age range or particular types of people. For example, some products may be designed for young children whilst other products may be designed for old age pensioners. Sometimes a company may target certain people to encourage them to buy their product. This is usually done through advertising. A company may sell its products at home and abroad.

Young children learn in many ways. Usually a child will learn quickly if what they are doing is fun or exciting. Many games and toys involve the use of numbers, letters or words. Sometimes shape and movement is integrated into a learning toy/device. Sound, even if is caused by mechanisms rather than electronics encourages a child to learn.

Instructions for Jaws of life school project for Grade 7 Step by Step

How to make jaws of life school project:

  • Step 1: Cut out the three cardboard pieces as shown i.e. two for the arms and one rectangular piece for the base.
  • Step 2: File down the top end of the small syringe and then drill a small hole through the plastic part at the top end.
  • Step 3: Drill holes at each end of the ice cream sticks. The holes must be sized such that you can get a bolt and nut through them.
  • Step 3: Attach the small syringe midway to the rectangular cardboard base using hot glue.
  • Step 4: Wrap the base with duct tape and use duct tape to further secure the small syringe to the base. Wrap the arms with duct tape.
  • Step5: Attach the arms to the base with one bolt and nut each. Tighten to the point that the arms can still move freely.
  • Step 6: Attach the two ice cream sticks to the top of the small syringe using a bolt and nut. Attach the other end of each ice cream stick to the left and right arms. All parts must be tightened to the point that they can still move freely.
  • Step 7: Fully depress the small syringe and the arms should be in the closed position.
  • Step 8: Attach a tube to the large syringe and fill the tube and syringe with the red-coloured water avoiding any air.
  • Step 9: Now attach the other end to the small syringe.
