Weeee yes experience the electron transport chain in context.
January 7, 2022
Melanie Stegman I am a biochemist, making games to teach the invisible bits of cell biology.
Walk around in a cell and solve puzzles... the puzzles are neat because as a biochemist, I can tell that they give the player a nice feeling for how proteins and especially big complexes work. If you are learning about the Electron Transport Chain in class, this game will make you an expert! It's great to play on its own as well. Everyone can play it, no prior knowledge required: it is very well designed!
The game is short. I want more, and so will you! Play it in your browser.
And please give the scientist who made it your feedback after playing!
Fun rating: 5 out of 5

I thought this game was beautifully illustrated, and the soundtrack was equally wonderful! The creators did a fantastic job of conveying how different aspects of the cell function, and the significance of their role. I admittedly started this game as an assignment for a class I am taking, with the approach of this being something I "had" to do. But, the game structure was engaging enough that I quickly found myself drawn in, wanting to figure out how to advance to the next level. The only constructive feedback I would offer, if anything, is for a tiny bit more context about what each challenge of the game represents. Biology is admittedly not my strong suit, which is why I sought this game, specifically (to see how I would fare as someone who is probably playing at a low-novice level. I was able to navigate the game, and realized there were things about biology tucked deep in the depths of my brain that I thought I'd long forgotten, but yet, I would have appreciated a little bit more of an explanation tucked away with the unveiling of each new challenge level. That said, this game is fantastic – especially so for someone who may be currently studying introductory cell biology.

I can honestly say that this is one of the prettiest science games I have played so far.
When trying this game out on stream, I was immediately hit by the beautiful aesthetic of the game and the great audio this game had. Immediately I was interested in the game, as the visuals are bright and colorful, and the painted feel of the game is definitely something I'm into. Character customization is also a plus!
Gameplay wise this game is also great, there's definitely a feeling of wanderlust that emerges when you hop on the game, as you walk around in a cell and explore the microcosm around you.
This game is also really engaging with fun puzzles which teach you different biomechanics that happen in your cells, it's really neat to see the symbiosis between the different mechanisms in a cell and how everything works together in order to have a cell function correctly!
As someone who has high school knowledge of these systems a little else, I was really surprised at how legible this game was and how the biology of the cells was so well explained! If only I had this game as a teen, maybe I would have done better in school ^_^"

Starting with unity 3d.
My Little Pony Unity Animation Test
As we worked through the first few pages of the book, we noticed more and more that we would be facing some pretty serious limitations in regards to how the 2D assets could be manipulated in Unity. Additionally, we started to see our development pipeline slow down due to the fact that we had to convert all of the source files from Flash into individual parts, only to be reanimated again in Unity. At the time Unity had no native support for a true 2D pipeline. (Ironically, their 2D tool chain was launched the same day as this post.). That said, most of our animations were animated in more of a side view, puppet joints style; as shown in the animation test below.
We continued to develop the first few pages completely in this way, so we could share a demo with Hasbro to get their feedback. While they were very happy to see progress and understood the approach we’d been taking to complete the animations – we knew we could do better. So, we set out to find a solution that would speed up production time, but also allow us to take better advantage of the source animations from the show. All three seasons of My Little Pony are beautifully animated in Adobe Flash – so we wanted to find a solution that would allow us to use those source assets in the best way possible.
After reviewing several other options we settled on Scaleform Mobile from Autodesk . Scaleform Mobile enables developers to leverage the power of the Adobe Flash tool set to create animations, interfaces and even full game experiences on mobile devices. Used in over 1000 titles across all major platforms ranging from AAA titles to casual games, Scaleform provides a streamlined solution to create hardware-accelerated 3D game menus, HUDs, animated textures, in-game videos and mini-games. Several members of our team had used Scaleform in 2009-2010 to handle UI on our Ben 10 project ( Ben 10 Alien Force: The Rise of Hex , WiiWare, XBOX360), so we were familiar with its strengths and curious to see what weaknesses it overcame in the time since we last used the middle-ware.
Ben 10 Alien Force Rise of Hex UI
As we evaluated My Little Pony for integration with Scaleform, our first concern was that the source assets are optimized for show quality. Once they were converted to polygons we knew they would be very heavy and that some optimization would need to occur… but how much would be needed? Could we achieve the same volume of animation in Scaleform as we’d planned with the Unity solution? We began another quick animation demo to see what limits we would need to place on poly counts and draw calls in order to reach the performance thresholds that the fans deserved.
Our first tests were playable, but slow. Nearly all parts of the show assets needed to be simplified in order to get the best performance out of our target devices (iPad2 and newer) Using a Nexus 7 as the testing constant, our artists took steps to reduce gradients , reduce background poly density , and optimize details like the outlines around each pony, in order to get the best possible frame rates while preserving animation quality.
My Little Pony Scaleform Animation Test
With each pass we saw performance improve, and after a few weeks we felt it was time to share with Hasbro. The results were very encouraging – they instantly recognized the increase in brand quality. The animations were livelier, the scenes were more crisp thanks to the vector rendering and the file size was outstanding at a lean 28MB.
Scaleform Mobile SDK allowed us to use the source files from the My Little Pony TV show to achieve the most authentic animations possible on a mobile device while keeping filesize low and frame rates high.
The rest of our production timeline was spent optimizing the scenes even further to reach even better performance on older devices such as the iPad 1, adding sound and music (and lots of Pony VO!), and wrapping up general production quality passes.

My Lady Jane
I wasn’t sure if I’d be the target audience for Prime Video’s new period romance My Lady Jane and I admit that in the first few minutes I considered turning it off and watching something else. But I’m glad I didn’t. I’ve now watched the first two episodes of the season and it’s surprisingly entertaining, though I have a few nits to pick. This is guilty-pleasure TV, pure and simple. I’m hooked.
The series, created by Gemma Burgess and based on the novel by Jodi Meadows, Brodi Ashton and Cynthia Hand, stars Emily Bader as Lady Jane Grey, Edward Bluemel as Lord Guildford Dudley and Jordan Peters as the sickly Edward VI. The supporting cast includes Jim Broadbent, Rob Brydon, Anna Chancellor along with plenty of other talented actors. It’s doing quite well with critics , and I can see why.
Our tale begins not long after the death of King Henry VIII, the Tudor king famous for his many wives, his break with the Roman Catholic Church and formation of the Church of England, and his general ill-temper. But this is a fantasy version of England in which people called Ethians live. Ethians can change into their animal form at will, though each one only has one form. Regular people—known as Verity—do not possess this magic but they do make the laws and have effectively cast out the Ethians from society, banishing them into the wilderness, though many remain and a group called The Pack has taken up banditry and other outlaw practices.
The series revolves around Lady Jane Grey who, in actual history, briefly became Queen of England for just nine days before having her head lopped off. The show makes it clear that it is not interested at all in the true history—obviously, given the Ethian fantasy stuff—and will tell a very different version of events. In this version, Jane and her family find themselves penniless after the death of Jane’s father who, thanks to the patriarchy, left the entire estate to an uncle, the Duke of Leicester (Broadbent) a rather grotesque old man with old-fashioned ideas about women and disgusting feet.
Jane, you see, is not at all interested in old-fashioned ideas about women or marriage. She wants to be independent. She has dreams of publishing a book about medicinal herbs. When her mother sets up an arranged marriage and forces her to wed, she tries to run away and when that fails she turns to her cousin, the king. What follows is a series of mishaps and adventures and a pretty damn good “will they / won’t they” type romance that’s actually quite a lot more charming than I expected. I won’t spoil the details, but there are some very fun twists and turns in just the first couple episodes. The show really nails the tone right from the get-go and I always admire a series that understands itself and what it wants to be and then does that unabashedly. (Like Hulu’s The Great , for instance, which is in the same genre).
Where I deign to pick at nits is in the annoying choice to include modern day music fairly often throughout the episodes and end-credits. I don’t mind the modern day dialogue. It’s actually very witty. At one point, Jane asks a man she meets at a tavern “Do you come here often?” and the narrator (who frequently adds bits of backstory or jest to the mix) notes that she is the first person to have ever used this line and already regrets it. I just really don’t like modern rock songs playing over a period piece, no matter how silly and ahistorical it may be.
The only other real complaint I have is how thick they layer on the girlboss stuff in the beginning, though I think this was done on purpose because for all her bluster, Jane is actually thwarted in all of her attempts to gain freedom and independence, and is actually a lot more naive than she realizes.
On top of the great characters, there’s a layer of mystery surrounding King Edward’s mysterious affliction, a deeper conspiracy involving various characters, some fun politicking and court intrigue and so forth. Again, I’m only two episodes in but I’m very much looking forward to watching more. There’s some great comedic stuff here, and I’d say more about the influences it wears on its revisionist sleeve but I fear that might be spoilery and you really don’t want to be spoiled. Trust me. The cast is great. The leads are charming. The mystery is intriguing. The fantasy stuff adds layers that other similar shows lack—I love The Great, but this is like The Great with magic.
In fact, I enjoyed the first two episodes so much that I downloaded the book on my Kindle (it’s free with Kindle Unlimited , by the way) just to see how faithful the adaptation is. What I will say, from the couple chapters I read, is that it sticks to the novel’s tone—rather whimsical with a strong narrator voice—but adds in a lot of swearing and some other things that I think it could have left out (not that I’m a prude, but I don’t really see the need to add f-bombs when the source material doesn’t have them). There’s also a pretty significant change to the backstory around King Henry and the status of the Ethians and I’m really not sure what to make of it, though I suppose all may be explained as the season continues.
You can watch My Lady Jane on Amazon Prime Video now , as all eight episodes are live. Here’s hoping it’s renewed for a second season.
Are you watching My Lady Jane ? What do you think of the series? Let me know on Twitter and Facebook .
