Evidence Review of Bullying Prevention Strategies

The “Strengthen the Evidence Base for Maternal and Child Health (SEMCH) Programs” is a Health Resources and Services Administration-funded initiative that aims to support state Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Title V programs in developing evidence-based or evidence-informed State Action Plans in responding to the National Outcome Measures, National Performance Measures, and State Performance Measures to facilitate the transformation of the MCH Title V Block Grant program.

SEMCH recently released an evidence review of the current literature on strategies to address bullying. Although the intended audience for these briefs is Title V state health departments, the information has broad applicability to any individual or organization interested in bullying prevention. You can access to 3-page brief on the SEMCH website, as well as the full report.

EU Commission Invited Presentation on Inclusive Systems for Bullying and Early School Leaving Prevention

Professor Paul Downes, Professor of Psychology of Education and Director, Educational Disadvantage gave an invited online presentation on Inclusive Systems for Bullying and Early School Leaving Prevention for the EU Commission’s School Education Gateway on May 17, 2024.

The webinar was attended by one hundred teachers across Europe. https://school-education.ec.europa.eu/en/professional-development/webinars/european-commissions-webinar-multidimensional-issues-school-bullying-prevention and included a question and answer session.

It was based on monographs Professor Downes led, published by the EU Commission, in the areas of school bullying and inclusive systems in education, as well as DCU Educational Disadvantage Centre’s Irish based research on students’ experiences and voices on these issues in school. The interplay between bullying and early school leaving was highlighted as part of a focus on developing whole school systems of relational spaces and specific strategies for teachers.

EARLY YEARS: Dad uses grief over losing his 11-year-old son to suicide to help families combat cyber bullying

“stand for the silent” helps to raise awareness about cyberbullying, and awards scholarships.

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - 14 years ago, Kirk Smalley lost his 11-year-old son, Ty, to suicide. But that’s not how he wants his son to be remembered, so he and his late wife, Laura, started an organization called Stand for the Silent .

“He wasn’t an angel, but he was our angel, you know?” says Smalley, co-founder of Stand for the Silent.

“He was all boy. Loved to hunt, loved baseball, especially the St. Louis Cardinals. We always took him to a Cardinals game for his birthday,” says Smalley.

Smalley says Ty took his own life after years of being bullied.

“After we lost Ty, we decided we wanted to do a little research and figure out how often that kind of thing was happening. We found out it’s happening far more than people realize,” explains Smalley.

“We started traveling around and speaking at schools and community organizations doing school presentations about bullying and youth suicide,” says Smalley.

Since the pandemic, Smalley says cyberbullying has just gotten worse.

“If your child’s on social media, you better be on their friends list. If your kid’s on Facebook, you better watch what they’re doing on Facebook. Kids are spending a lot more time online and on social media. Most parents don’t realize the effect that social media has on their children,” says Smalley.

Smalley has other suggestions on how to protect your teen from cyber bullying this summer:

• Raise awareness at home and in the community.
• Have a discussion. Talk openly with your child about the dangers of social media, Photoshop, and AI.
• Consider technology and tools that parents can use to help reduce exposure to cyberbullying. Smalley recommends the Bark app.
• Take it a step further, like reporting it to police or school officials.
• If necessary, consult an attorney to evaluate your legal options.

Smalley hopes to save other parents from experiencing the heartbreak that he has felt and that he knows how he wants Ty to be remembered..

“Ty was a good kid. He had a really good heart,” he says.
