The main protagonist of the novel is an 11-year-old orphan, Harry Potter. He lives with his abusive aunt and uncle on Privet Drive in Surrey, England. Harry has been told his entire life that his parents were killed in a car crash. However, on the night of his eleventh birthday, Harry learns that he is a wizard. A giant man named Rubeus Hagrid crashes through the door and delivers Harry’s acceptance letter to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Hagrid also gives him a birthday cake and tells him about his magical history. Despite the Dursleys’ best attempts to stamp the magic out of Harry and keep him in the dark, James and Lily Potter were two of the brightest wizards of their age. When Harry was a baby, an evil wizard named Voldemort murdered his parents and tried to kill him as well. Harry remembers only a flash of green light and an evil laugh from the night in question. No one quite knows how, but baby Harry survives Voldemort’s attack and causes the dark wizard’s magic to break. Left with a scar in the shape of a lightning bolt on his forehead, Harry Potter becomes known as the Boy-Who-Lived throughout the wizarding world.

Hagrid is Harry—and the reader’s—introduction to the wizarding world. He takes Harry to Diagon Alley, where the young boy discovers that his parents left him a sizable fortune at Gringotts Bank. While they’re at the bank, Hagrid runs a mysterious errand for Dumbledore, picking up a parcel that turns out to be the titular Sorcerer’s Stone. At Ollivander’s, Harry buys his wand. Both Harry and Voldemort’s wands have cores made from twin feathers from the same phoenix. Hagrid gives Harry the first birthday present he’s ever received: Hedwig, a snow-white owl who can carry mail for him. While getting his robes fitted, Harry meets Draco Malfoy , the boy who will become his schoolyard rival. Malfoy’s comments about wizarding families show Harry that prejudice and bigotry exist in the wizarding world. After giving Harry his train ticket, Hagrid leaves.

A month later finds Harry at King’s Cross station, struggling to find platform nine and three-quarters. He spots a family of redheads and follows them through a brick barrier. After boarding the Hogwarts Express with the help of the Weasleys, he becomes fast friends with classmate Ron Weasley. Aboard the train, Harry also meets Hermione Granger , who seems like a know-it-all, and Neville Longbottom , who appears bumbling and clumsy. When they finally arrive at Hogwarts, Professor McGonagall welcomes them to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. She explains that their houses will be their community and family at Hogwarts. A singing Sorting Hat places all the first years one of four different houses—Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff, and Ravenclaw. The houses are respectively known for their bravery, cunning, loyalty, and intelligence. Malfoy is sorted into Slytherin, and Harry begs the Sorting Hat not to place him there. Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Neville are all sorted into Gryffindor.

Harry turns out to be a natural at broom flying, just like his father had been. He becomes the Gryffindor Quidditch team’s Seeker, even though first years are traditionally not allowed to play. Harry has begun to profoundly dislike everything Slytherin, including its head of house, Severus Snape , the potions professor. Snape openly favors the Slytherins and appears to dislike Harry on sight. Malfoy repeatedly schemes to get Harry and Ron expelled, tricking the two boys into breaking curfew. When Hermione tries to stop them, she and Neville both get locked out of the common room in the process. The four Gryffindors run away from Filch, the caretaker, to avoid getting in trouble. They stumble into the right wing of the third floor, where they find a giant three-headed dog guarding a trapdoor. Harry is determined to find out what it is guarding. Harry, Hermione, and Ron do not become friends until after Halloween, when they save her from an attacking troll. Unbeknownst to them, the troll was a diversion created by Quirrell to allow him to sneak onto the third floor. When they see Snape limping, they believe that he was the one trying to get past the dog.

During Harry’s first Quidditch game, he loses control of his broom. Hermione notices that Snape is making direct eye contact with Harry and muttering under his breath. Seeing this, Hermione believes that Snape is cursing Harry and trying to kill him. Hermione rushes over to light Snape’s cape on fire to distract him, knocking Quirrell down in the process. Later, Harry will learn that Snape was trying to keep him safe. The children learn from Hagrid that the dog is hiding something to do with Nicolas Flamel. During Christmas, Harry receives an anonymous present—an invisibility cloak with a note explaining that it belonged to his father. Harry is desperate for a connection with his family. When he uses the cloak that night, he finds the Mirror of Erised . The Mirror is charmed to show the person looking into it their heart’s most desperate desires. Harry sees his parents and extended family in the Mirror.

After much research, the children finally learn about Nicolas Flamel and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Harry is convinced that this magical item that can turn things into gold and grant its user immortality has been hidden at Hogwarts by the headmaster, Albus Dumbledore . Harry and Hermione receive detention after they successfully help Norbert, Hagrid’s illegally owned baby dragon, get picked up and moved to a dragon sanctuary. For detention, Harry, Hermione, Neville, and Malfoy are forced to go into the forbidden forest with Hagrid. There, they come across a cloaked figure drinking the blood of a dead unicorn. From Firenze, a centaur, Harry learns that unicorn blood can heal a person’s body but at the cost of their soul. Harry now believes that Voldemort is the only person who would be after both unicorn blood and the Sorcerer’s Stone.

Harry realizes that it cannot be a coincidence that a stranger just happened to run into Hagrid with a dragon’s egg. Hagrid admits that he told the stranger that Fluffy, the three-headed dog, is easily lulled to sleep with music. The children try to find Dumbledore to warn him that Snape has uncovered how to get past the dog, but they learn from Professor McGonagall that the headmaster is in London. Harry, Ron, and Hermione know they must protect the stone and keep it from falling into Voldemort’s hands. After they get past the dog by playing music, they fall into a tangle of Devil’s Snare. Hermione blasts fire at the magical plant, forcing it to free Harry and Ron immediately. In the next room, the three must ride brooms to catch a flying key that will open the door, allowing them to move to the next test. Next, they find a giant chess board. Ron is the best at Wizard’s Chess and sacrifices himself so they can win the game. Ron is knocked unconscious during the game, so Harry and Hermione move on without him.

They pass a defeated troll before coming to a long table with assorted potions and a note. Hermione is delighted when she realizes that this is a logic test. She picks out the vial of potion that will get Harry through the blaze of magical fire. There is only enough in the bottle for one person. Harry goes on without her, and she turns back to help Ron and alert Dumbledore. In the last room, Harry, expecting to find Snape, is surprised to see Professor Quirrell . Quirrell tells Harry that he was the one who cursed Harry’s broom. He forces the boy to stand in front of the Mirror of Erised before removing his turban and revealing a horrible face grafted to the back of his head. It is Voldemort, living like a parasite, trying to get his physical body back. The Mirror sees that Harry wants to find the stone but does not want to use it, and the Sorcerer’s Stone magically appears in his pocket. Voldemort commands Quirrell to kill Harry and get the stone. Harry’s scar begins hurting when Quirrell touches him, but the professor’s hands have also begun to blister and burn at the contact. Harry faints and reawakens in the infirmary.

Harry is surrounded by gifts from his friends and admirers. Dumbledore is there, and he answers some of Harry’s questions. Dumbledore tells Harry that he survived because of his mother’s love for him. When she sacrificed her life to save him, she left an indelible mark on him that Voldemort cannot break. Therefore, when Quirrell touched Harry and tried to kill him, his body began to burn. Dumbledore sent Harry the cloak, and Harry wonders if the headmaster had been preparing him to face Voldemort this entire time. The Sorcerer’s Stone will be destroyed. After Dumbledore rewards last-minute points to Gryffindor, they win the House Cup. Hagrid gives Harry a photo album with pictures of his family, and Harry returns to spend the summer with the Dursleys.

The british library london, united kingdom.

This is the original synopsis of the first Harry Potter book. It was typed by J.K. Rowling to accompany the opening chapters and circulated among prospective publishers. A copy was submitted to Bloomsbury Publishing and was a significant step in convincing them to offer J.K. Rowling her first contract. The lessons at Hogwarts are described here. The prospect of learning more about these magical subjects is part of what makes Harry Potter’s world so fascinating.

Synopsis

The original synopsis of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone  summarizes the first book and describes the magic and wonder of the tale very well. A copy of the synopsis was included on Rowling’s original website but that copy ended at the bottom of page one. The full synopsis is reproduced in the book Harry Potter A History of Magic , the companion book to the exhibition at the British Library.

Interesting facts and notes

Hagrid is described as the one who delivered the letters to Harry in Privet Drive, which means he was using quite a bit of magic for someone who, strictly speaking, is not allowed to do so.

Harry is snatched away from his mundane existence by Rubeus Hagrid (Robbie Coltrane), the groundskeeper for Hogwarts, and quickly thrown into a world completely foreign to both him and the viewer. Famous for an incident that happened at his birth, Harry makes friends easily at his new school. He soon finds, however, that the wizarding world is far more dangerous for him than he would have imagined, and he quickly learns that not all wizards are ones to be trusted. — Carly

  • On his eleventh birthday, Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) discovers that he is no ordinary boy. Hagrid (Robbie Coltrane), a beetle-eyed giant, tells Harry that he is a wizard and has a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. In his first year of magical education, Harry tackles a fully grown mountain troll, learns to play Quidditch, and participates in a thrilling "live" game of chess.
  • Lord Voldemort, an evil and powerful dark wizard, has just been defeated. When he tried to kill a one-year-old boy, Harry Potter, the killing curse rebounded upon him, destroying his body. Harry is left an orphan with a lightning-bolt scar on his forehead, Voldemort having killed his parents, Lily and James Potter. Professors Dumbledore and McGonagall and Gamekeeper Hagrid leave him on the doorstep of his ultra-conventional, insensitive, negligent Muggle (non-magical) relatives, the Dursley family, who take him in. Harry's relatives decide to conceal his magical heritage from him and make him live in a cupboard under the stairs for ten years. Shortly before Harry's eleventh birthday, he receives a letter addressed specifically to him. His outraged uncle, however, reads and burns it before Harry has a chance to look at the contents. The sender does not give up, and the Dursleys receive successively larger numbers of the same correspondence. Soon, his Uncle Vernon becomes so paranoid that the Dursleys, with Harry in tow, hide in a hut on a small island to escape. That night (which happens to be before Harry's birthday), he is visited by an enormous man named Hagrid who bursts through the locked door of the hut. With Hagrid holding the Dursleys at bay, Harry finally reads his letter, in which he learns he has been invited to study magic at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The next day Harry and Hagrid head to Diagon Alley in London (the secret magical location hidden behind the famous wizarding pub The Leaky Cauldron). Harry enters the wizarding world for the first time, learns to his surprise that he is famous, and meets the new Hogwarts Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Professor Quirrell. Hagrid takes Harry to Gringott's Bank, where Harry learns that he is quite wealthy. Following this, Hagrid stops at a different vault to retrieve a small, wrapped parcel for Dumbledore. Using his newfound money, Harry buys everything he requires for his first school year, including and owl, and a wand. Interestingly, the wand that chooses him is the brother wand of the one that was used to kill Harry's parents and give him the scar. He then takes the train to Hogwarts from Platform Nine and three-quarters, befriending Ron Weasley, and meeting Hermione Granger, a Muggle-born witch. Upon arrival, the Sorting Hat places Harry, Ron and Hermione in Gryffindor House. Draco Malfoy, an arrogant and elitist student, gets placed in Slytherin. At the end of their first week at Hogwarts, Harry and Ron discover that Gringotts, the wizarding bank, was broken into and a vault that Harry and Hagrid visited had been the subject of the robbery. Later, Harry discovers he has a talent for riding broomsticks, and after an incident with Malfoy, is recruited to join Gryffindor's Quidditch team as a Seeker, much to Malfoy's displeasure. Harry, Ron, Hermione explore Hogwarts late at night and accidentally stumble across the door to a corridor. A three-headed dog, christened Fluffy by Hagrid, guards a trapdoor. On Halloween, Quirrell informs everyone that a troll has entered the castle; Harry and Ron fight the troll to save Hermione, who is trapped in the girls' bathroom, and the three become best friends. At Harry's first Quidditch match, Harry's broom becomes possessed, nearly knocking him off. Hermione sees Professor Severus Snape, the sinister Potions master and head of Slytherin House, staring at Harry and mouthing words, making her believe that Snape has caused the broom to misbehave with a dark curse. Hoping to save Harry, Hermione sets Snape's robes on fire, distracting him and others and allowing Harry to survive. At Christmas, Harry receives an Invisibility Cloak, once belonging to his father, which renders its wearer invisible. Harry uses it to explore the Restricted Section in the library to research information on Nicolas Flamel, a name Hagrid lets slip when confronted about his knowledge of Fluffy. Eventually, Harry learns that "Nicolas Flamel is the only known maker of the Sorcerer's Stone, which produces the Elixir of Life which will make the drinker immortal." Harry sees Snape trying to get information from Quirrell about getting past Fluffy; Quirrell says he does not know what he's talking about. Harry, Ron, and Hermione are sure that Snape is trying to steal the Sorcerer's Stone in order to restore Lord Voldemort to power, but Hagrid denies it. While at Hagrid's hut, the trio discover a dragon egg Hagrid was nursing in a fire. Later the egg hatches a Norwegian Ridgeback dragon, and Hagrid decides to call him "Norbert". The friends are nervous for Hagrid, since dragon breeding had long been outlawed in the wizarding world, and Hagrid had something of a reckless nature, who has long since nursed a strong desire for a dragon. Finally, Harry, Ron, and Hermione are able to convince Hagrid to let Norbert go live with other dragons of his kind in Romania. Harry, Hermione, Ron and Draco are caught out late at night, and are forced to serve detention with Hagrid in the Forbidden Forest. Harry sees a hooded figure drink the blood of an injured unicorn, which makes Harry's forehead scar start burning. Firenze, a centaur, tells Harry that it is a monstrous thing to slay a unicorn, let alone drink its blood. He also tells Harry that unicorn blood will keep one alive, and that the hooded figure is in fact Voldemort. Harry, Hermione and Ron find out that Hagrid has told a hooded stranger how to get past Fluffy, and they believe the theft of the Stone is imminent. Rushing to finally confide in Professor Dumbledore their news, they meet Professor McGonagall, who is shocked to find out how much they knew about the Stone, but reassures them all the same that it is safe in the castle. She also tells them that Dumbledore has been sent away on an important mission by the Ministry of Magic. Positive that Dumbledore's summons was a red herring to take Professor Dumbledore away from Hogwarts, the trio make plans to thwart Snape's theft of the stone. They set out to reach the stone first, navigating the security system set up by the school's staff, which is a series of complex magical challenges. The three make it through together until finally, Harry must enter the inner chamber alone. There he finds that Professor Quirrell, not Snape, is attempting to steal the Stone. Realizing that Snape was trying to protect him from harm all along, Harry confronts Quirrell and survives a second encounter with Lord Voldemort, who has possessed Quirrell and appears as a ghastly face on the back of Quirrell's head. Quirrell crumbles when he touches Harry's skin, and Harry passes out because of his close proximity to Lord Voldemort. Voldemort then pitilessly abandons Quirrell, who dies in the aftermath of his possession. Harry wakes up in the hospital wing. Dumbledore reveals to Harry that Harry's mother died to protect Harry as an infant. Her pure, loving sacrifice provides Harry with an ancient magical protection from Voldemort's lethal spells and also prevents Voldemort from touching Harry without suffering terribly. Dumbledore also says that the Sorcerer's Stone has been destroyed to prevent future attempts by Voldemort to steal it. Finally, at the end-of-year feast, the House Points totals are given: Gryffindor is in last place. However, Dumbledore gives a few "last-minute additions", granting points to Harry, Ron, Hermione and Neville for their bravery and service towards school, so that Gryffindor wins the House Cup. Harry returns to the Dursleys for the summer, happy to finally have a real home in Hogwarts.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone Chapter 1 Summary

How it all goes down, the boy who lived.

  • The book begins by introducing Mr. and Mrs. Dursley, and their baby son Dudley. They live on Privet Drive and try to act as normal as possible. However, we soon learn that the Dursleys are hiding something.
  • What they're hiding is the Potter family; Mrs. Potter is Mrs. Dursley's sister, and the Dursleys try to pretend the Potters don't exist.
  • The narrator says that they don't realize how unusual this particular day is going to be – they don't see an owl fly past the window. But as Mr. Dursley leaves for work, he thinks he sees a cat reading a map, just for a second.
  • Mr. Dursley tries to forget about it, but then notices that there are people all around wearing cloaks. He thinks it's weird, and puts his mind towards work. At work that day, he doesn't look out the window, so he doesn't see the massive groups of owls flying about, which would strike anyone else as unusual.
  • During his lunch break, he ventures outside and sees a bunch of people in cloaks again. He overhears them talking about the Potters and gets really freaked out.
  • He almost calls his wife to talk about it, but then tries to convince himself that the cloak people probably weren't talking about his relatives.
  • On his way out of the office that evening, he bumps into a man wearing a violet cloak. The man tells him that You-Know-Who is gone and calls Dursley a Muggle. Mr. Dursley doesn't understand any of this, but it freaks him out all the same. When he gets home he sees that same cat outside his house.
  • That evening, he and his wife act normally. They hear on the news that the country is overcome with owls and that the sky is full of shooting stars.
  • Mr. Dursley asks his wife about the Potters, because he thinks they might be connected with all the weird happenings, but she hasn't heard from them. As they're going to bed, he sees that cat outside again. He falls asleep thinking about how the Potters shouldn't bother them.
  • Outside, the cat waits until almost midnight, when a thin old man in a cloak appears: Albus Dumbledore.
  • Dumbledore takes something out of his pocket, which looks like a cigarette lighter. He uses it to put out all the lights on the street. Then he walks over to the cat, which has transformed into Professor McGonagall. He knew it was her even when she was still a cat.
  • He asks her why she wasn't getting happy with the others. She says that she was worried about how risky everyone was acting and that the Muggles might notice something.
  • Dumbledore says it's been eleven years since they felt like this. They talk about how the Muggles can't find out about them, before confirming that You-Know-Who is definitely out of the picture.
  • Dumbledore eats lemon drops and says they should call You-Know-Who by his real name, Voldemort.
  • McGonagall says he's the only one who can say that, because Voldemort's only ever been scared by Dumbledore. She wants to talk about what really happened and how he was actually defeated.
  • She asks about the rumor that the Potters are dead, but their little boy, Harry, is still alive. Dumbledore confirms that it's true.
  • McGonagall says that Voldemort was defeated when he tried to tried to kill Harry and couldn't – that it stopped his power from working somehow.
  • Dumbledore says they'll never know how it happened, checks his mysterious watch, and says Hagrid's late. He says they're going to leave Harry with his family, the Dursleys, and McGonagall says they're despicable. Dumbledore counters that they're the only family Harry has left, and he'll be safest with them, even though they're unlike the magicians and his parents. He's written them a letter to explain.
  • McGonagall tells him that Harry's going to be a superstar, and Dumbledore says it's better for him to grow up modest and humble.
  • They're interrupted by Hagrid's arrival on a motorcycle. Hagrid is a gigantic man, but he's carrying baby Harry very carefully.
  • Harry is a tiny, black-haired baby with a lightning-shaped scar on his forehead.
  • Hagrid says goodbye to the baby and starts crying.
  • Dumbledore leaves Harry on the doorstep with a letter. The three magic people look really sad. As they vanish into the night, Dumbledore wishes him good luck.
  • The baby sleeps, as magic people think of him and toast his welfare.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

By j.k. rowling, harry potter and the philosopher's stone summary and analysis of chapter 1.

The novel opens with a description of the Dursley family of number four, Privet Drive. Vernon Dursley , an overweight man with a bushy mustache, works as the director of a drill-making firm, while his wife, Petunia, is thin and blonde and has a particular penchant for spying on the neighbors. Their son, Dudley, is grotesquely fat, even as a toddler, and is spoiled rotten by both parents. The Dursley family is perfectly content to live normal and uninteresting lives. In fact, their greatest fear is that someone will find out that one of their relatives is not completely normal and uninteresting: Petunia’s sister, Lily Potter , is decidedly “unDursleyish,” and, as a result, Petunia has not spoken to her in several years.

One morning, the Dursley family begins the day much as any other: Vernon gets dressed for work, while Petunia feeds Dudley and tells her husband about the latest gossip from the neighbors. Yet, as Vernon leaves for work, he notices something strange: a cat reading a map. When he takes a second look, however, the map has vanished, and the tabby cat is staring back at him. Convinced that he is imagining things, Vernon continues his drive to work. While stopped in traffic though, Vernon notices another strange thing: several people in the street wearing brightly-colored cloaks. Still, he decides to dismiss the odd occurrences and focus on the drill-making scheduled for the day.

When Vernon leaves for his lunch break, he is again irritated to notice numerous people wearing brightly-colored cloaks and milling together excitedly. As he passes by, he overhears some of them talking about “the Potters,” and, in a moment of terror, he wonders if they might be talking about his bizarre sister-in-law and her family. Although he tries not to worry about it – after all, “Potter” is a very common name – Vernon spends the rest of the day in a state of distraction until 5pm, when he can go home to talk to Petunia about the strange goings-on of the day. When he gets to his house, he is confronted by the same tabby cat as the morning, now sitting on his garden wall.

Petunia’s day has been completely normal, and Vernon wonders if he should even bother telling her about the strange whispers about “the Potters.” It must have just been a coincidence. But still, the television news report was full of strange occurrences: showers of shooting stars and hundreds of owls flying during the day. Vernon wonders if the mention of the Potters was a coincidence after all. As he uneasily falls asleep, Vernon concludes that, even if those strange people in the cloaks were talking about his sister-in-law and her family, it would hardly have any effect on his life.

A few minutes before midnight, a tall, thin man named Albus Dumbledore suddenly appears on the street corner of Privet Drive. Using a silver “Put-Outer,” Dumbledore swiftly puts out all of the street lamps until the street is completely dark and then notices the tabby cat, still keeping watch on the corner. The cat transforms into a severe-looking woman with square glasses who Dumbledore refers to as Professor McGonagall . Dumbledore and Professor McGonagall discuss the occurrences of the day and the rumored disappearance of You-Know-Who, also known as Voldemort , a dark wizard who has been in power in Britain for the past eleven years.

The subject turns to the Potter family, and Dumbledore informs Professor McGonagall that Lily and James Potter are both dead, murdered by Voldemort. Their infant son, Harry, however, somehow survived Voldemort’s killing curse and broke the dark wizard’s power. Dumbledore plans to leave Harry with the Dursleys; they are his only remaining relatives and will have to raise him until he is old enough to understand about the death of his parents and his magical abilities. Professor McGonagall vehemently protests Dumbledore’s decision, but Dumbledore explains that there is no one else. Moreover, by living with the Dursleys, Harry will be protected from his own fame as “the boy-who-lived.”

A few moments later, a giant named Hagrid drives out of the sky on a flying motorcycle and hands Dumbledore the bundle of blankets containing the infant Harry. Dumbledore gently leaves the baby on the Dursleys’ doorstep with a letter of explanation, and Dumbledore, Professor McGonagall, and Hagrid leave the scene.

Rowling opens the book with a description of Vernon and Petunia Dursley , two characters who are very obviously not the protagonists of the book. Although Rowling does not describe the Dursleys in truly malevolent terms – as she will later with Voldemort – their closed-mindedness and insistence on appearing “normal” are all expressed as negative characteristics. The Durlseys’ view of Lily Potter and her family is also portrayed in particularly negative terms. Because Petunia believes that her sister is a “freak,” she chooses to deny the bonds of family, bonds that should be much stronger than any judgmental disapproval.

With Dumbledore’s entrance onto the scene, it becomes clear that the Dursley family will never be able to be as normal as they wish to be. By leaving Harry on their doorstep, the Dursleys are forced to coexist with the “abnormality” of the Potter family that they have always sought to avoid. Significantly, Dumbledore’s decision to leave Harry with them serves two purposes. Not only does it allow Harry to grow up without being haunted by his fame in the wizarding world, but it actually punishes the Dursleys for their intolerance. If the Durlseys had been more accepting of Lily Potter and her lifestyle, Dumbledore’s decision to leave Harry with them would not have been such a life-changing inconvenience.

Dumbledore’s presence in Little Whinging also introduces the readers to the magical world that Rowling describes in greater detail in later chapters. Dumbledore’s sudden appearance on the street, his mysterious ability to turn out all of the street lamps, and his references to the evil Voldemort and his killing curse – everything hints at the amazing world in which Harry truly belongs. Similarly, Professor McGonagall’s ability to transform into a cat and back reveals that the opportunities in this magical world are truly endless.

Yet, as Dumbledore clarifies, Harry is not yet prepared to deal with the wondrous magic of the wizarding world. Children with less traumatic backgrounds might be able to flourish from their infancy by staying in the wizarding world. Harry, on the other hand, has such a dark experience forming his first memories that he is far safer to himself if he grows up as a Muggle. In a sense, Harry must come of age before he can become a part of the magical world in which he is so important. And for Harry, this coming of age will occur in Chapter 2, with his eleventh birthday and invitation to Hogwarts.

‘ Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone ‘  is a children’s book, but it has a lot of essential life lessons for readers of all ages . The world-building for this novel hooks the readers into staying engaged , and the third-person narration adds to the detailed storytelling ability of the book. Several themes that are crucial to a child’s development are tackled in this book. Themes like love, friendship, and life lessons to tell apart absolute good and evil form a major part of the wide roster of themes that reside in this book.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone  Themes

Love and family.

One of the ‘standout’ themes of ‘ Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, ‘ and by extension, the whole book series, is love. The very premise of Harry Potter surviving the killing curse of Lord Voldemort is based on the protection offered by Harry’s mother, Lily. By sacrificing herself to protect her son, she builds a strong magical shield around Harry, and Voldemort is destroyed by his very own curse as it rebounds.

Love is a recurring theme in the entire novel, and it dictates the dynamic of the plot. For instance, the lack of love from Harry’s foster family and his hatred towards them is in clear contrast to his desire to see his parents in the Mirror of Erised , which is fueled by love.

Although similar in many respects to love, friendship has a more nuanced role in ‘ Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. ‘ Starting with Hagrid, who is Harry’s first friend in the book, Harry goes on to make several friends, including Ron and Hermione. Furthermore, the idea of making friends is also of major importance in ‘ Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. ‘

When Harry meets Draco Malfoy for the first time in Madam Malkin’s shop, Harry has already formed an opinion of Draco, and during their second meeting, Harry rejects Draco’s hand at the friendship and remains loyal to the humble and kind-natured Ron. Harry says, “I think I can tell the wrong sort for myself, thanks.” which illustrates his confidence in making clear choices very early in this world he recently discovered.

Another major theme in ‘ Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone ‘ is sacrifice. Harry Potter’s mother, Lily Potter, sacrifices her life to save him. Although Ron is partially responsible for Hermione being locked in with a mountain troll , Harry and Ron sacrifice their safety by choosing to save her from the troll and run towards danger knowingly. Hermione sacrifices her place in Hogwarts by saving both Harry and Ron from possible expulsion from Hogwarts and risking her own expulsion.

Finally, Ron sacrifices himself in the game of Wizard chess to facilitate safe passage for Harry and Hermione to protect the Philosopher’s Stone. While this being a children’s book allows for most of them to be unhurt despite sacrifice, all these choices to sacrifice themselves, made by the characters, involve accepting the possibility of death.

Courage and Bravery

An essential theme of ‘ Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, ‘ bravery plays a major role throughout the narrative. For example, Neville Longbottom is scared and nervous in most parts of the book. He gets bullied severely, especially by Malfoy and his friends, Crabbe and Goyle. However, taking Ron’s word of ‘having to stand up for himself’, Neville gathers enough courage to fight Malfoy during the Quidditch match. He goes on to even stand up against his very friends, Harry, Ron, and Hermione, when they are on the verge of breaking school rules.

Bravery is also portrayed by Harry, Ron, and Hermione as they persevere amidst challenges and keep their goal to prevent the stealing of the Philosopher’s Stone always.

Although an obvious theme, magic is an essential theme and is crucial in the details that build the story world. The major fascination in this book comes from a wide array of magical nuances that would be helpful to have in the real world. Spells, enchantments, potions, magical beings, artifacts, and several other aspects that make the story of ‘ Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone ‘ a great read for children play an important role in building the imagination of the reader.

Spells like  Wingardium Leviosa , flying broomsticks, or Madam McGonagall’s transfiguration into a cat are all impossibilities in the real world but add to the fascinating attraction that makes this book a memorable one. It caters to the escapism and fantastical requirement of the reader, thereby creating a sort of ‘magic’ of its own.

Intelligence

Another minor yet important theme in ‘ Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone ‘ is intelligence. It is illustrated several times, starting with Hermione’s continuous application of her knowledge resourcefully with the spell Alohomora to open the door and her impressive application of logic amidst a stressful situation.

Ron’s intelligence in winning the game of Wizard Chess is another good illustration. Furthermore, the headmaster Dumbledore also plays a very clever role in showing Harry the mirror of Erised beforehand and using the subtle distinction between greed and need as a basis of his puzzle to retrieve the Philosopher’s stone.

  • Harry tells Professor Dumbledore about everything that happened. Later in the school feast, Dumbledore awards extra points to Gryffindor for their heroic actions. Gryffindor wins the House Cup.

Writing Style and Tone

‘ Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone ‘ is written with simple language and is easy to follow especially as it is a children’s book. The writing style is primarily in the basic third person without any evident experimental styles.

The tone of the novel is sometimes funny and even engaging. J. K. Rowling evokes humorous situations within the text by alluding to certain characters of the book whom Harry dislikes. Examples include Aunt Petunia, who is written as a nosy neighbor, Uncle Vernon as a rude, rule-following, and boring man, and his cousin Dudley as a spoilt brat who is pampered beyond repair by his parents.

Analysis of Key Symbols in  Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

Mirror of erised.

The Mirror of Erised is where Harry first sees the reflection of his parents and the rest of his family. It is revealed to show the deepest desires of the viewer. It works as an important literary tool in portraying Harry’s deep desire to be reunited with his parents, whom he never had the chance to know. It also does the same with Ron, who is revealed to want to be more successful than all his elder brothers, shedding light on his plight as a young sibling overshadowed by successful elder brothers.

The Philosopher’s Stone

Being an extremely valuable magical artifact, the Philosopher’s stone can create the Elixir of Life , which would make its drinker immortal. This symbolizes absolute power and demonstrates Lord Voldemort’s drive to attain dominion over others with this power. Furthermore, the fact that Harry could get it out of the Mirror of Erised illustrates his pure and incorruptible intentions and cements Dumbledore’s faith in him further.

What does the Sorcerer’s Stone symbolize?

The Sorcerer’s Stone, in its essence, symbolizes power in this book. However, it is an essential plot device and helps differentiate good from evil. Voldemort seeks the Sorcerer’s Stone for his selfish purpose of coming back to life as the tyrant he always was. On the other hand, Harry frantically attempts to prevent Voldemort from getting it, as he wants the collective good and peace of the magical world to remain.

What is the message of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone ?

There are several messages in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. However, the most important message in Harry Potter is that love and friendship triumph over anything, no matter how fear-inducing the obstacles may be. Another message in this book is also that taking action in the face of adversity despite fear is the true sign of bravery.

What is written on top of the Mirror of Erised?

The engraving on the top of the Mirror of Erised reads, “Erised stra ehru oyt ube cafru oyt on wohsi.” When one reads this backward, the sentence becomes more apparent – “I show you not your face, but your heart’s desire.” This is the very purpose of the mirror, and the engraving works as a clever stylistic device to create mystery in the reader’s mind till it becomes apparent.

10 Other Harry Potter Spinoff TV Shows Warner Bros. Should Consider

I've been a harry potter fan for 24 years, but rereading is completely different now that i'm a mom, colin creevey's harry potter movie fate is still better than his book ending.

  • Warner Bros and HBO are working on a Harry Potter TV reboot, with potential spinoff series in the works. Exciting news for fans!
  • Regulus Black, a character with a dark and tragic story cut from the movies, could be the focus of a spinoff series.
  • A potential Black family spinoff could delve into the dark world of the Death Eaters and explore the complex dynamics of the Noble House of Black.

The Harry Potter movies cut a character with a dark and tragic story, but they could be the perfect lead for a future spinoff series. Warner Bros and HBO have the Harry Potter TV reboot in the works, and the " book-faithful " adaptation is sure to restore all the characters that didn't make it into the beloved films. However, these companies have also announced the potential for additional spinoff series in the near future, and with so many great stories throughout the background of Harry Potter , there are several that could stand alone in a TV show all their own.

The first season of HBO's Harry Potter remake should begin streaming on Max in 2026, but there is still a lot of work to do in the meantime. One of the earlier announcements from Warner Bros stated that the studio was meeting with prospective writers, who would pitch ideas not only for the reboot series but other possible TV shows as well . The concept of multiple Harry Potter series is certainly exciting, and fans have their fair share of suggestions regarding what they could be about. Among these ideas is a spinoff following Regulus Black, which could be just what the doctor ordered.

Warner Bros is considering other TV show ideas to go along with Max's Harry Potter remake, and we have a few suggestions about what they should be.

Regulus Black's Story Would Be Perfect For A Harry Potter Spinoff Series

A dark spinoff about the black family (following regulus) would be the perfect harry potter follow-up.

Regulus Black was Sirius Black's younger brother, who died before the events of Harry Potter . He was first mentioned in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix when Sirius gave Harry the rundown on his family history . The Blacks were among those families in the wizarding world who prided themselves on being pure blood and were notoriously involved in the Dark Arts. Sirius explained that Regulus became a Death Eater immediately after leaving Hogwarts but panicked when he realized how far Voldemort was willing to go to secure power. This led the young man to be murdered.

Of course, Regulus' story was, in reality, far more interesting than this. In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows , Harry learns that Regulus had actually died while actively trying to destroy Voldemort's Horcruxes and that he sacrificed his own life so that Kreacher, the house-elf, could live. It's a tragic story that begins on a slippery slope to darkness and ends with heartbreaking redemption . It's for precisely this reason that Regulus Black would be the perfect focus of a spinoff series, which would follow his descent to darkness and eventual stand against Voldemort.

The Harry Potter movies mentioned Regulus, who was the mysterious RAB in Half-Blood Prince . However, his full story was cut.

A Black Family Spinoff Could Also Include Bellatrix, Narcissa, and Andromeda

A regulus series would need to include all the blacks & their cult-like family dynamic.

The great thing about a Regulus Black spinoff is that it would give a more intimate peek into the world of the Death Eaters and allow further exploration into the Noble and Most Ancient House of Black . In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix , Grimmauld Place was pretty well explored, and readers of the book especially got to see some of the Dark things this family got up to. Still, it's the family members that are the most intriguing, with the three Black sisters garnering a lot of interest over the years.

Bellatrix, Andromeda, and Narcissa Black's sisterhood was never heavily featured in the Harry Potter movies, but the books dropped enough tidbits to make their stories interesting. The three were seemingly close while growing up, but Andromeda committed what was considered the worst betrayal imaginable when she married Ted Tonks , a Muggle-born. Bellatrix and Narcissa married into pure-blood families (Lestrange and Malfoy, respectively), and the former became a Death Eater, determined to murder her younger sister, brother-in-law, and niece, Nymphadora Tonks.

The cult-like family and the Dark world they coveted wouldn't have been easy to escape, and Regulus and Andromeda's slow realization that they must would make for a highly thrilling series.

While these events are canon, they have never been very deeply explored, which is all the more reason a Noble House of Black spinoff would be perfect. The cult-like family and the Dark world they coveted wouldn't have been easy to escape, and Regulus and Andromeda's slow realization that they must would make for a highly thrilling series. Of course, the backdrop of the First Wizarding War would make this all the more interesting, as several other prominent events from Harry Potter were finally brought to the screen.

The Long-Awaited Marauders Story Could Be Featured In A Regulus Black Spinoff As Well

A regulus spinoff could double as a marauders story.

Given the time period of Regulus Black's story, a spinoff featuring this character could include other highly requested stories as well. Sirius' little brother was only two years younger than him, which means he went to school with Lily Evans, Severus Snape, and the Marauders. This generation of characters played a significant role in Harry's later rivalry with Lord Voldemort, which means that diving into their time at Hogwarts could create an even stronger foundation for the central Harry Potter series .

Since Regulus was a Slytherin and became a Death Eater shortly after leaving Hogwarts, he likely had some sort of relationship with Snape while at school. The Harry Potter books revealed that Snape had begun meeting with fellow aspiring Death Eaters at Hogwarts, which was part of why Lily ended their friendship during their fifth year. This and more could be featured in a Black spinoff series, allowing more of Snape's story, including his rivalry with James Potter, to be explored in the series as well .

Could A Black Family Spinoff Series Actually Happen?

Warner bros is open to making multiple harry potter tv shows (but a black series would have to wait).

Harry Potter fans have been asking for certain spinoff movies or TV shows ever since the movies wrapped up in 2011, but it has never been more likely than now. With HBO's TV remake in the works, Warner Bros has already stated that it is open to running multiple series at the same time. A Black family spinoff following Regulus Black could cover several of the most commonly requested plotlines and characters all at once, which means this could easily become a reality. However, given the subject material of Regulus' story, it might be several years before it would air.

It might make more sense for the spinoff to begin after the Harry Potter reboot's final season, which likely won't begin streaming until around 2036.

The truth about Regulus Black isn't revealed until Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows , and though fans of the original books already know his story, diving into this too soon could spoil later seasons of HBO's TV remake for new audiences. It might make more sense for the spinoff to begin after the Harry Potter reboot's final season, which likely won't begin streaming until around 2036 (10 years after the season 1 premiere). So, while signs look good that a dark Regulus Black spinoff could actually happen, fans are likely to be more than a decade older when it finally does.

How many 'Harry Potter' books are there? Every wizarding book in order of release.

synopsis of harry potter book 1

The wizarding world is nearly 30 years old, but fans still haven’t seen enough of "Harry Potter."

The magic continues beyond the original books in the "Fantastic Beasts" movies, at the aptly-named Universal Studios park and onstage with Broadway's "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child."

Though the books themselves have largely remained beloved, many fans have been turned off by author J.K. Rowling's outspoken anti-trans views. In 2020, Rowling made a series of posts criticizing gender-neutral language suggesting that it assails the ability of cis women to discuss their experience with gender. More recently, she's come under fire for criticizing Scotland's new hate crime laws and misgendering British TV personality India Willoughby .

How many Harry Potter books are there?

There are seven books in the “Harry Potter” series by J.K. Rowling .

The series starts after 11-year-old Harry gets a letter on his birthday inviting him to study wizardry at Hogwarts, a boarding school for witches and wizards. Though he’s always felt like an outcast living with his Aunt, Uncle and spoiled cousin, it’s not until this birthday that he finds out he’s a wizard – and a famous one at that.

The series follows Harry’s studies at Hogwarts with best friends Ron and Hermione and chronicles the impending danger posed by Lord Voldemort, a dark wizard who killed Harry’s parents.

Here are the eight “Harry Potter” books in order:

  • Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
  • Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
  • Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
  • Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
  • Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
  • Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Many consider “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” to be the eighth "Harry Potter" book. Rowling’s epilogue to the original series, published as a play based on Rowling’s original story, follows Harry Potter’s youngest son Albus as he grapples with “the weight of a family legacy he never wanted.” The play is currently on Broadway .

Rowling has also published three other books in the wizarding universe. “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” published between the fifth and sixth books, is a fictional textbook “written” by wizard Newt Scamander seventy years before Harry Potter and his friends read it at Hogwarts. It was adapted into a three-part film series starring Eddie Redmayne in 2016.

“The Tales of Beedle the Bard,” another Rowling novel dives into five fairy tales historically told to young witches and wizards in the "Harry Potter" universe. The book even includes notes from Hogwarts' headmaster Professor Albus Dumbledore .

10 Steps To Make The New Harry Potter Remake Perfect

  • A Harry Potter reboot series should stay close to the books and avoid unnecessary changes made in the movie adaptations.
  • The TV show should take advantage of the opportunity to fill in plot holes and inconsistencies in the Wizarding World, providing better explanations and developing certain aspects of the story further.
  • While the TV remake should strive to be its own thing, it should also learn from the successes and failures of the Harry Potter movies, honoring the source material and creating a magical atmosphere that captures the essence of Hogwarts.

Harry Potter will return with a TV remake on Max, and although the fan base is divided about a reboot, there are ways to make the upcoming series perfect. The Harry Potter movies ended in 2011 with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2, after eight movies based on the seven books by J.K. Rowling . The Wizarding World comprises 11 movies, eight based on the eponymous novels and three spinoff films from the Fantastic Beasts prequel series, as well as a stage play, video games, theme parks, attractions, exhibitions, documentaries, a quiz show, and a reunion.

In April 2023, Warner Bros. announced Harry Potter would be returning as a TV reboot . Although it's just a decade after the original ended, a TV series has a lot of potential to please Harry Potter fans. With that in mind, it should focus on capturing the magic of the Harry Potter books, not the movies . A Harry Potter reboot series is much better than a Cursed Child movie , and it has the opportunity to flesh out the characters, deepen the story, and take its time, staying as accurate to the source material as possible.

The Harry Potter Remake Needs to Stay Closer to the Books

The harry potter novels are very complex.

Series like Game of Thrones and movies like The Hunger Games prove there is a market for faithful adaptations, as both stay close to the source material. Although the Harry Potter movies did a great job of capturing the bigger aspects of the series, there were many instances where they changed important parts of the books. In order for the Harry Potter remake to be great, the Max series needs to stay as close to the source material as possible and avoid making unnecessary changes.

Although some changes are common when adapting a novel for the screen, adaptations shouldn't alter major events or characters . The movies made too many changes to Harry Potter canon, whether it was by altering what Harry did with the Elder Wand or making Ron and Ginny different from their book counterparts. The TV show should avoid following in its footsteps, as it will have more time to properly bring Rowling's story to life.

Fill In Plot Holes

The wizarding world contains some inconsistencies.

As complex as the Wizarding World is, there are some inconsistencies within the Harry Potter books and movies that the TV show could fix. Since a TV series would have more time than a two- to three-hour movie, it would have a lot of chances to fully develop and explain decisions, objects, and spells that don't make sense. For example, it could better explain how the Time Turners work and the spell that traces underage magic.

Add J.K. Rowling's Changes

The author added more details later on.

Over the years, J.K. Rowling has made a lot of canon changes to the Wizarding World that would work well in the upcoming Max series. She's shared many revelations on Twitter and her website, Pottermore, further adding to the universe and clearing up some issues . Those changes include clarifications about how certain names should be pronounced and that Hermione's skin color was never explicitly stated as white in the books (via CNET ).

The Battle of Hogwarts

One of the series' best moments.

In the books, the Battle of Hogwarts is massive. The cavalry arrives at Hogwarts with wizards from the town, Kreacher leads the house elves in the fight, the centaurs join in, and a lot of characters that aren't shown in the movie are featured . Since Max is planning to develop Harry Potter over 10 years , they would have the space for the Battle of Hogwarts to make up an entire season. It's less likely it will take that much time, but it needs at least a few episodes to do it justice — and the Harry Potter remake could deliver better action sequences , too.

It Must Include Peeves And Other Magical Creatures

Peeves is one of several missing creatures in the movies.

Peeves the Poltergeist wasn't in the Harry Potter movies , but he was originally supposed to be played by Rik Mayall. The actor even shot a few scenes, but he was eventually cut from the film. Harry Potter fans have been adamant that Peeves should have been in the movies, and a TV remake has a chance to right that wrong and add the poltergeist . He's the source of comedic relief and mischief in the books, and he'd fit well into a TV show.

In addition to Peeves, there are other magical creatures that should be included — and utilized properly — in the remake. Although Dobby is in the Harry Potter movies, he's so much more important in the books. He has more storylines that don't appear in the films, including one involving Winky, a house elf that doesn't appear in the films. Hagrid also introduces the students to a series of magical creatures that don't appear in the movies. For example, the Blast Ended Skrewts are missing completely from the Harry Potter adaptations.

The Remake Should Explore Lord Voldemort's Past

There's more to voldemort than meets the eye.

Ralph Fiennes did a great job portraying Voldemort, but the movies didn't fully show the villain's potential, making him feel one-sided at times . Although there is no question that Voldemort's evil, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince dives deeper into his motivations. There is also a lot more about his family, the Gaunts, and an explanation of why he's unable to love and only wants power. The Max show could unravel all of this, and the Harry Potter remake could also fix Voldemort's death . In the movie, he disintegrates during his fight with Harry. However, the books make a point of showing that Voldemort died human.

The Harry Potter Show Can't Ignore the Movies

Learn from their failures and success.

Although the TV remake should try its best to be its own thing, it shouldn't ignore what the Harry Potter movies did right. At the same time, the creators should also understand where the films failed and learn from their mistakes . The Harry Potter movies are a huge staple of the Wizarding World, and while fans don't agree with every change they made, they're still generally beloved. It'd be a shame to not take advantage of their existence to make the Harry Potter series even better.

All eight Harry Potter movies are streaming on Max.

The Harry Potter Remake Needs A Great Cast

Max will need to look for talent that can match the original actors.

It's no secret that the cast of the Harry Potter movies have come to be associated with their characters, and it'll be difficult for Max's TV adaptation to replace the Golden Trio or even stars like Alan Rickman and Robbie Coltrane. To recreate Harry Potter without these stars, the show will need an incredibly talented cast . They won't just have to portray the book characters well; they'll also have to make viewers forget that an entirely different cast tackled their role only a decade ago.

Honor The Timeline Of The Books

The movies rushed events.

The Harry Potter movies had limited screen time, so they needed to focus on important events from the books. Given that a TV series doesn't have that issue, it should honor the real timeline of the source material. The Harry Potter movies rushed through many events , but the TV show doesn't need to. In Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone , Harry visits Diagon Alley with Hagrid, then immediately jumps on the train to Hogwarts. In the books, he has one month in between. The movies also never spent much time showing Harry at the Dursleys, flying through his summer vacations — even the ones where interesting things happened.

Depict Daily Life at Hogwarts

There's a reason people love harry potter.

There is a reason so many people love the Harry Potter series, and it's the magical world itself. That's why people immerse themselves in the books often and visit the Wizarding World theme parks. As such, the Harry Potter TV show should focus on creating a truly magical atmosphere . It shouldn't only focus on the Golden Trio; it should depict daily life at Hogwarts, whether that involves the students doing homework or attending feasts. This will enable viewers to fully immerse themselves in the world they love — and for a longer time than the movies allowed.
