They're digitally interactive , too, so they can be finished in your children's computer files if you need typing practice for your older children or you're running out of paper or ink. Ask me how I know? :-)

I think it's important to intellectual freedom that children can use cursive writing. It makes writing so much faster and handier. You will find my best manuscript printing practice and cursive handwriting worksheets below this sample image.

Printable Handwriting Worksheets For Kids.

Darling Handwriting Story

It is so handy when your students need practice forming the letters well and obeying the top, middle and bottom lines to have the lines printed on the paper.

Oh! If kids would only obey even the bottom line. A page looks a world better if their handwriting simply obeys the ruled lines.

I know a child who, as a toddler, "wrote" in the bottom space below the bottom line on my whiteboard while I was helping other children learn to write.

Effectively his "bottom line" was the frame of the white board. When he started learning to write, his baseline was excellent. To this day his handwriting is the best at staying on the base line. This alone helps his writing look nice and neat. What a wonderful habit!

1. Ruled Handwriting Worksheets

Ruled worksheets are a Godsend for handwriting practice!

There are differences like dexterity and the desire to succeed that set children at different levels even at the same ages, yet ruled lines set the standard.

Then practice printing is what can help them improve. Simple practice is easy and can be fun once the children realize that it is easy.

The stronger their hands are the more smooth their writing will be. Here are some handwriting exercises:

  • Choose one fault to improve as with the base line idea. Pretend it is a floor. Put a 3x5 card under the line for all but descenders like g, j, p, y, etc.
  • Another idea is to use the raised lines handwriting paper sold at Walmart or create your own by embossing the back sides of the paper (use a ruler to draw a deep line with a ball point pen on paper that is set on a soft surface as with a pile of paper, a notebook, or a blotter).
  • Another handwriting fault to improve is to teach children to choose to make round letters more round. You will find that a page is much more legible if the clock faced letters, or letters that use some part of a circle, are well made. HINT: The secret is to start at 2 on the clock.

2. Use Pencils For Handwriting Practice

2.a. using a pencil can improve handwriting success.

Pencils are the easiest tools for learning penmanship and cursive writing.

It is the friction on the paper that a pencil has that ink does not have.

Often paper for young children is textured and thick, not smooth and thin. This increases writing friction and helps cushion the writing from any imperfections in a writing desk or table.

If handwriting is difficult or untidy, resist a child's desire to use a pen for penmanship practice or extended writing exercises. Let the friction between the pencil and the paper aid your child's efforts.

  • The pencil will not slip on paper as easily as pen.
  • Many pencils are six sided so children have better control.
  • Most mechanical pencils have textured grips that improve handwriting.

2.B. Pencil Grips Help Kids "Get the idea" How To Hold A Pencil

writing pages blank

Stetro Pencil Grips

Did you ever get into a discussion with friends about the ever frequent topic of how to hold a pencil?

I know that people can write well with many different hand grips; yet it seems to me after teaching many children that, in the end and over time, if they have a better grip, they'll last longer writing essays and reports by hand.

Especially if they're writing in cursive. Or want to write quickly.

I wouldn't start with too young a child; yet activities like threading beads and sewing with shoe strings can help children "get the idea" as well as strenghthen their hands.

After a certain age or ability, I would try to improve a child's grip early so as to train a habit. Each child is different and will progress through writing skills at different speeds.

Teaching kids to write with Stetro pencil grips is a phenomenal help to showing them how to hold their pencils! For some kids, all it takes is to "try it on" to "get the feel" of how to hold it well.

Using Stetro grips you cannot hold the pencil "wrong".

  • Right handed?
  • Left handed?

Simply turn so the arrow points the other way up or down the pencil.

Stetros have a great feel, too, that lasted for years. They did not get a gunky feeling over time. They have been a Godsend in our family.

I remember buying a pack of twenty Stetros for a long-time Kindergarten teacher. She was over the top happy!

Later I did the same for a second grade teacher and she reacted the same way.

It's so nice once you feel these in your own hand and can see how they work.

For a while in my life and when visiting with other parents, the subject arose so often that I kept a Stetro in my purse as an example.

You can see Stetros at Amazon .

Another wonderful treasure is the  Dixon Ticonderoga pencil ! The six sides are so helpful and make holding a pencil correctly a natural for many kids, especially those who are older.

Are you teaching older students to write?

I remember when I bought my first box of mechanical pencils. God bless not having to sharpen pencils! And God bless .5 mm fine point pencils .

2.C. Occupational Therapy For A Proper Pencil Grip

Tracey LeRoux is a long time Occupational Therapist with years of experience in private practice, local schools, and therapy rooms.

Her post graduate qualification has helped her help children in classroom settings and to train facilitators in kindergarten and early elementary learning.

She has written many books on early learning activities, yet the one that applies best here is her work called The Pencil Grip E-Book . It's filled with lots of ideas, especially to help parents help their own children. In it she discusses:

  • The ideal pencil grasp or handhold.
  • Stages of development.
  • Pencil grasps that work and those that do not.
  • Factors involved with solutions to try.
  • When to give a child a pencil grip.

Her ebooks are super affordable, interesting, and loaded with pertinent photos. Visit her OT Mom Learning Activities website or choose your favorite OT Mom ebook here .

2.D. Interesting Unconventional Pencil Grip Or A New Way To Hold A Pencil

Rene Armbruster shows a unique way to use a pencil for both the young and the old either with learning disabilities or with health issues. I was impressed. She also has a great idea of using a magic marker. Maybe it will help you help someone who cannot use the normal way of holding a pencil. See her unique way of holding a pencil at YouTube .

Alphabet Worksheets

When your children are little in preschool and kindergarten , traditional tracing and copying is a great way to begin for some children.

Some? Well, sometimes it is better to simply teach them how to make straight lines and smooth circles.

I have seen students who were able to write prettily from their first instruction, so be encouraged to show them how to print correctly the first time and every time. Extra drill is not needed for these children.

Leave off emphasis on printing practice, if practice is not needed. Give time for independent practice writing, too.

Too much practice printing for elementary students can be torture to the careful student who makes her letters well. Yes, in my experience this is usually a girl, although I have seen some artistic boys with beautiful handwriting, too.

Keep it simple. The goal is legible handwriting. If a student already has nice handwriting, s kip assigning lots of printing practice sheets.

We have different sizes of  printable lined paper  where you can make your own manuscript worksheets.

Also, be encouraged to use the smaller rule from higher levels if writing big is hard for your students. My own children did better through the years learning to write in the fourth grade size from the beginning.

Simple Sentences Worksheets

Other kids are happy to have the easy practice of both printing and cursive writing practice. I like to make sure that my students are also learning the Spelling, Phonics, or Grammar at the same time as they are practicing handwriting.

This is where it is handy to use our Phonics and Grammar pages for simple practice of all the mechanics of handwriting. Almost all of our grammar pages have cursive writing worksheets .

Especially if you are outside a school situation, you have the freedom to discern which sort of learner you have. You have more leeway as t utors and parents  to choose more or less for each child as the children need.

Little children who need practice or busywork do well with independent study using our printable handwriting worksheets for kindergarten. Older children like our cursive sentences to practice their handwriting.

Any of our simple sentence worksheets offer good opportunities to practice handwriting in cursive sentences practice worksheets.

Each of the Grammar selections branches to different levels on another landing page. This way your k ids learn handwriting as well as proper grammar.

Oh, how I wish that I would have known how simply handwriting can be taught when our older children were young.

Romalda Spalding's Phonics book  book tells a very simple method of using six strokes for manuscript and another five to simply connect those same letters for cursive writing.

I remember teaching one seventh grade girl saying, "Short upswing, j". She exclaimed,

"I've never seen the j in that!"

Poof! Using this method, in less than two weeks most of our youngest children learned to use cursive writing. This was a giant savings in time spent "learning" penmanship. It wasn't a one year course. Simply connect the letters nicely.

Other children benefit by seeing cursive guides on their paper and some benefit by receiving an award. See what works for your students and lead them to being able to practice cursive independently.

One of the features I love about teaching cursive is that one of our children began to read better because he finally saw the separation between between words as individual units simply because the cursive words were connected. Sometimes it just takes a different perspective. I've heard other parents say the same for some of their children.

We have more cursive handwriting and penmanship pages

Handwriting practice worksheets are a great way to get kids to learn, or improve, their writing skills. They’re especially handy in early elementary school when kids are old enough to sit down and write, but still developing their handwriting.

With more things becoming digital and typing takes over, it’s more important than ever to reinforce handwriting in kids. Even if it means working on it at home.

handwriting practice worksheets for kids

What Kind of Handwriting Practice Worksheets Are Best?

If you’re new to worksheets, here’s how to choose the best one for your child:

Age Appropriate

Look for printable worksheets that aren’t too easy or hard for the child who you’re practising with. There are handwriting practice worksheets that are great for beginners at the preschool or kindergarten level, and more advanced ones to help elementary aged kids.

It’s best if you start with skills they are already familiar with and work your way up to more difficult ones. If it’s too simple kids will get bored, and one that’s too complicated could lead to frustration.

Skill Building

What skills is the child working on that need some extra practice? Simple letter formation worksheets are great for beginners in preschool and kindergarten. Once they master their ABCs you can move on to whole words and phrases.

Another way to practice writing in elementary school is with guided lessons. You can incorporate teaching other skills, like learning the spelling of a child’s name, their address, or the days of the week into your writing practice to teach two skills at once!

  • Name Tracing Practice – Original
  • Name Tracing & Writing Practice Booklet
  • My Address & Phone Number

Number Practice

Number formation is a part of handwriting and a necessary skill to develop as kids are introduced to early math concepts. Teaching kids to form, and later write, numbers 1-10, 1-20, and eventually 1-100 happens during kindergarten and the early elementary years.

Worksheets can help teach kids how to write their numbers and also give them number sense and rote counting practice.

  • Numbers Tracing Worksheet 1-20
  • 1-100 Number Tracing Practice

Customizable

One size never fits all when it comes to kids. Choose printables that can be customized with your own words and fonts to help support a child’s learning goals. What’s great about custom options is that you can repeat the same worksheet at different difficulty levels or practice cursive handwriting.

  • Word Tracing Practice – Original

Using Cursive Handwriting Practice Worksheets

Speaking of cursive, printables worksheets are one of the best ways to master that skill. Typically, kids start with basic printing and then move on to pre-handwriting letter formation. The D’Nealian – Manuscript font is great for this.

Since proper letter formation is really important with cursive writing (incorrect writing won’t flow as easily), handwriting practice worksheets should be repeated until kids get a good hang of each letter.

From there, you can move onto joining some letters together to spell a word. I like to start with the child’s name.

  • Cursive Name Tracing Worksheet

Using Worksheets to Measure Progress

If you’re an elementary school teacher or homeschooling family you’re always looking for ways to measure the child’s progress. Handwriting isn’t a black and white skill; it improves slowly over time.

So how do you measure handwriting progress?

At the beginning of the school year, have each child complete a handwriting worksheet. The exact worksheet you use will depend on the age of the kids. Kindergarteners and first grade kids, for example, should either use the alphabet or their name as a guide.

The school year will provide plenty of opportunities to develop any areas where kids might be struggling with their writing, and there’s definitely no shortage of writing practice for school aged kids!

At the end of the year have them repeat the worksheet they completed at the start. This will give you an idea of how much the child has improved with their writing over the term. Not only is it a great tool for educators, kids find seeing their progress motivating too.

For older elementary kids you can do something more complex. Just make sure that you can consistently repeat it again at the end of the year, or at least have them do something similar enough that you’ll be able to see the progress.

Measuring Numeracy Skills

You can also use this technique to measure number writing. For this, I really like the last page of this number tracing worksheet pack . You can use the other pages throughout the school year to practice, but the last one has numbers 1-100 listed on one page.

Just like with the handwriting worksheets, have kids complete the sheet at the start of the year to the best of their ability. You can also use those sheets as an indication for where your child or class is at, and tailor your lessons accordingly.

Then, at the end of the year, have them try and trace numbers 1-100 again and see how much they’ve improved!

Measuring Cursive Handwriting Progress

If your child is learning cursive handwriting, or you’re practising at home, you can use the same method to measure their progress with two worksheets.

When working with older children it’s nice to use a longer sentence when measuring cursive writing progress since it’s important to see how well the child can link the letters together.

If you want to see how well kids can write on their own, a printable creative story writing worksheet is a great way to encourage independent writing.

How to Use Worksheets to Improve Reading and Spelling

Writing out words is one of the best ways to help kids learn to spell. Customizable handwriting practice worksheets can be generated with a child’s name, dolch sight words, or weekly spelling words.

This word tracing worksheet is perfect for reading and spelling skills. You can customise it with any words or phrases you’re practising.

Rainbow Writing – Have them pick out several colored pencils and then write each letter out in a color pattern. This helps kids slow down and take in each letter because they have to stop to change colors.

Sound Blends – Use the worksheets to help identify tricky sound blends like \sh\ or \oo\. Have them write those blends in different colors or highlight them. This can also be helpful for kids with speech problems.

Rhyming Words – List a bunch of words that rhyme like “ball, fall, tall, hall, etc.” and have the child colour the rhyming part (all) in a different colour from the rest of the word. For older kids, use longer or compound words (eg. gumball, downfall, etc.).

Handwriting Worksheets for Language Learning

Whether it’s ESL or another language, worksheets are great for learning at any age. You can customise them to include vocabulary and spelling words. Then just use the techniques listed above to work on your reading or spelling!

How to Keep Children Interested in Handwriting Practice

When you’re working with kids at the early elementary level you have to get creative to keep them focused. Traditional worksheets are a great tool, but too much of them can get boring. Here’s some ways to make it more fun:

Emphasise Practising Their Name

It’s one of the first words young kids master writing. Planning writing practice around a child’s name is great for the start of kindergarten to introduce name writing, and throughout the year to practice other skills.

Name tracing practice booklets like this one can make writing more fun. There’s some tracing, plus cutting, sorting, and glueing activities. These break up the writing and help develop other early reading and writing skills in a more engaging way.

Think Past The Writing Worksheet

You can use worksheets for more than just writing! Some, like this playdough worksheet , are perfect for preschoolers to work on letter formation even if they can’t write yet.

Other ideas include turning a worksheet into a puzzle by cutting out each letter, using bubble letters to turn a worksheet into a word colouring page, and having kids use a worksheet as a reminder to help them write new words on a separate piece of paper.

You can also make worksheets fun by making them seasonal . Plus it’s a handy way to measure progress throughout the year.

Make it Useful

Learning is way more fun when you understand why you’re learning something. Instead of just having kids repeat letter formation or write out meaningless sentences, have them practice writing something they can actually use.

One way to do this is with an address writing worksheet . While it’s good for learning a child’s own address and phone number, you can also turn it into a letter writing activity.

First, collect and practice the address for someone the child would like to send a letter to. Then copy that address onto the envelope!

Since the post office will have to read the address, you’ll be able to give a real-world reason for why neat, legible handwriting is important to learn.

The letter itself can contain a drawing or, depending on the child’s age and skill level, it can be a letter – which is another opportunity to practice writing in a meaningful way.

Other Ways For Kids to Practice Handwriting

  • Have them label their school work with their name, and later, the date.
  • Encourage kids to write out useful information like family shopping lists.
  • Writing little notes or messages inside of cards and giving them to family and friends.
  • Gift lists for birthdays or holidays (letters to Santa are great for this!).
  • Let kids practice with unique writing tools like window writers, sidewalk chalk, bath crayons, etc.

Handwriting practice worksheets are a great tool when it comes to teaching elementary aged kids printing and cursive writing! These activities are great for developing skills at home or in the classroom. Once your child gets used to worksheets, try adding in some fun activities to keep them interested. Have fun learning!

Tips for Using Writing Worksheets

  • Use letter writing worksheets as a way to introduce your child to a chosen letter of the day, or even a letter of the week! Start your day with a letter writing worksheet to get your child familiar with the symbol and how to draw it. Challenge your child to find the letter written down in three different places over the course of the day. As the day goes on, you can have him write the letter in unusual places, like in a foggy bathroom mirror or with his peas at dinner. Make learning a letter a special event everyday.
  • Writing worksheets for kids can be great pre-reading or post-reading activities. Find a writing prompt that revolves around the subject of your story or lesson to complete before the reading assignment. Writing worksheets can revolve around physical objects that are in the story, such as snow or animals, or they can have a similar lesson about giving, emotions, or anything else.
  • Use writing worksheets to introduce your child to a new language. Our selection of foreign language writing worksheets help your child learn non-alphabetic languages in a simple way. These worksheets are great for kids who are learning about a new culture.
