Despite polarized attitudes, Rebecca Henderson argues that it's the perfect time for companies to reset their moral compass. In an essay from the book  A Political Economy of Justice , she explores the social efforts of Cadbury and Unilever. Henderson says companies and societies have long had qualms about the pursuit of profit only for profit’s sake. In early capitalist Renaissance Italy, for instance, lending money was considered a sin. Plus, she points to Walmart, founded in 1962 with a mission of making consumer goods more affordable for a broader swath of low-income Americans. Arguing for greater emphasis on the individuals, countries and institutions that make up these missions, this article draws on the concept of assemblages to outline a comprehensive understanding of peacekeeping.

Peacekeeping armies: how the politics of peace operations shape military organizations

What is a ‘peacekeeping army’ and why do some states develop them? This article lays out the first attempt to theorize this concept and illustrate its utility by comparatively analysing troop contributions to peace operations over time, with empirical examples from Burundi, Ghana, Rwanda and Uruguay.

Distancing through peacekeeping: global peacekeeping assemblages and the Gambian armed forces

What are the incentives for non-democratic countries to contribute towards peacekeeping missions? Through the case of The Gambia and interviews with peacekeepers and military decision-makers, this article shows how leaders can use keep peacekeeping for regime maintenance, with key implications for the deployed soldiers.

Peacekeeping, policing and politics: assembling the Ghana Armed Forces

This article studies the symbiotic relationship between peacekeeping and troop-contributing countries through the case of the Ghana Armed Forces. It shows the multifaceted ramifications of peacekeeping and deployments, especially for the global South countries that contribute heavily to the peace missions.

It highlights key developments that have shaped Latin American policies at the expense of the region's future participation in UN peacekeeping.

This article unpacks Russia's approach to peacekeeping. It finds that Russia is likely to execute more operations with lowered threshold for intervention, across physical, cyber and cognitive domains, and with the use of private military companies. This will cause greater clashes between Russian and western interests.

Understanding Bangladesh's security governance through peacekeeping assemblage: does contribution matter?

This article explores how Bangladesh's experience in international peacekeeping has significantly shaped its domestic security policies. It shows that the experience of peacekeeping influences power relations in Bangladesh's security governance through the internalization new norms, institutions and practices.

Climate change and peacebuilding: sub-themes of an emerging research agenda

What is the relationship between climate change, conflict-affected states and peacebuilding? To fill this research gap, this article studies the intersection between climate change and peacebuilding through insights from climate security, environmental peacebuilding, environmental studies and peace and conflict studies.

Strategic clarity or calamity? Competing logics of deterrence in the Taiwan Strait

This article examines how states restore deterrence in response to perceived deterrent decay through the case of the US' defence of Taiwan against Chinese aggression. It argues that the US should not exchange its policy of strategic ambiguity for a policy of strategic clarity, and should measure deterrence qualitatively.

Opening the Thucydides trap: a genealogy of rise-and-fall theory

This article argues that the rise to prominence of Thucydides trap as a framework of analysis has led to a reductive understanding of the link between power transitions and potential conflict. It advances a pluralistic approach by placing the Thucydides trap within a historical reconstruction of, what it terms as, the rise-and-fall theory tradition.

Mutual legitimation attempts: the United Nations and China's Belt and Road Initiative

This article studies the links between China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the UN. While legitimation concerns drove both sides to invest in UN–BRI relations, western opposition subsequently led the UN to reduce engagement. This has key implications for the research on China's global role and power relations at the UN.

A materialist reconsideration of international peace practice and its human and non-human constituents

Building on Spinoza's materialism, this article argues that conceiving peace as coherent to an actor's striving makes its practice flexible, comprehensive and effective. However, to grasp the relevant actors and interpret their striving across geographic, ontological and epistemic distances, certain contextual intimacy is crucial.

Us–uk–france relations amid the russia–ukraine war: a new strategic alignment.

This policy paper explores how the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the rising challenge from China have resulted in a closer strategic alignment of the US, the UK and France. Yet, it shows how this realignment is likely to be temporary as long-standing conflicts of interest begin to re-emerge.

Can a feminist foreign policy be undone? Reflections from Sweden

In context of the retraction of Sweden's feminist foreign policy (FFP), this policy paper identifies three factors that make the FFP more resilient than expected. First, global agreements on women's rights shape policies. Secondly, on-ground workers exercise autonomy in advancing gender equality. Finally, the international expectations for FFP states to be gender equality champions create a role-based constraint.

Global AI governance: barriers and pathways forward

This policy paper argues that while a global framework is emerging for the governance of AI, challenges like AI's role in interstate rivalry, ineffective institutions and divergent global policy priorities hinder cooperation. The article concludes with recommendations for strengthening the existing AI governance architecture.

Front-line guardian of the status quo: Japan under the Kishida government

Every so often, a cause ignites a sustained fury on college campuses across the nation. In 2020, it was Black Lives Matter . In 2011, it was Occupy Wall Street . In the 1980s, it was apartheid in South Africa . Right now, it’s the Israeli military campaign in Gaza.

Since college protests tend to draw comparisons to the 1960s, it’s helpful to know more about that heritage. Here are five books about the history of campus demonstrations:

‘America Divided: The Civil War of the 1960s’

This primer on the politics and history of the 1960s recounts the Cuban missile crisis and moves through the many events that led to and fueled student activism, including the Vietnam War and key moments in the Civil Rights Movement.

Published in 1999 and now in its fifth edition, it is co-written by Hamilton College history professor Maurice Isserman , who studies leftist movements, and Michael Kazin , a Georgetown University expert on U.S. politics and social movements in the 19th and 20th centuries.

‘Harlem vs. Columbia University: Black Student Power in the Late 1960s’

Given how prominent the Columbia demonstrations have been this year, it’s worth delving into the impact of a historically white, male bastion like the Ivy League school that abuts New York’s Harlem.

Stefan M. Bradley’s 2009 history focuses on the intertwined rises of Black and student power in response to Columbia’s attempt to build a largely segregated gymnasium in the small green park that separates it from Harlem.

‘Freedom’s Orator: Mario Savio and the Radical Legacy of the 1960s’

It took until 2009 for someone to write a definitive biography of Savio, a visionary who sensed how campus protests could change America.

But New York University historian Robert Cohen ’s 544-page tome, based on personal papers, recordings of speeches and countless interviews, brings to life accomplishments of a major leader of the Berkeley Free Speech Movement. His “ Bodies Upon the Gears” speech in 1964 could easily be adopted as the mantra of today’s pro-Palestinian movement.

‘The New Student Activists: The Rise of Neoactivism on College Campuses’

Months before the murder of George Floyd sparked BLM protests and years before Hamas attacked Israel, Villanova education professor Jerusha O. Conner published her examination of how 1960s-style activism had returned to college campuses.

Still, her examination of the current generation of student activists helps explain why they’ve been so effective at drawing attention and making change. Among other misconceptions, she debunks the myth that student activists today are fragile “snowflakes” operating from a sense of entitlement.

‘The Channels of Student Activism: How the Left and Right Are Winning (and Losing) in Campus Politics Today’

For a more contemporary look at student activism, pick up this slim volume by Johns Hopkins sociologist Amy J. Binder and Northern Illinois University sociologist Jeffrey L. Kidder that analyzes how the well-funded national conservative movement is building its own army of campus activists to remarkable effect.

The authors argue that voices from the left and the right are being “channeled into two distinct forms of mobilization and why that has profound consequences for the future of American politics.”
