Video shows wax Lincoln sculpture melted after 'wild heat' hits DC

Record temperatures in the U.S. , particularly the northeast has all of us melting, including Abraham Lincoln.

A 3,000 pound wax statue of the former president, present outside an elementary school in the nation's capital, melted as temperatures hit triple digits last weekend. Pictures and videos of the statue, that have since then gone viral over social media, show Lincoln slumped into his chair, with netizens referring to it as an apt visual of how they feel in this heat wave.

CulturalDC, a non-profit organization that had commissioned the 6-foot statue, in an update on their website , said that the wax sculpture by artist Sandy Williams IV was "intended to be burnt like a candle and to change over time, but this wild heat has done a number on Lincoln."

The organization said that the congealing point (where it begins to harden or melt) of the wax used in the statue is 140 degrees "but with this record-level heat, Lincoln has slumped into his chair more than ever anticipated!"

"All that wax is leannnnnnnning back under the weight of 2024 and the state of our warming planet," CulturalDC said.

The organization added that Lincoln's head was "purposely removed" to "prevent it from falling and breaking".

"We can’t guarantee he’ll be sitting up straight for the months ahead, but who really will be?," CulturalDC said.

More than 100 million Americans were under heat advisories or warnings from the National Weather Service last weekend. The Washington, D.C., area had record-breaking daily temperatures for two consecutive days, the weather service in Baltimore-Washington said.

On Saturday, the temperature at Dulles International Airport hit 100 degrees, breaking the previous daily high temperature record of 99 degrees set in 1988.

No plans to repair statue, says Culture DC curator

Curator and Executive Director of CulturalDC Kristi Maiselman, in a statement to USA TODAY, said that the organization does not "intend to repair the installation."

"After consulting with the Principal at Garrison Elementary and members of the local community, we have decided to remove it before students return on August 26," Maiselman said. "This timeline is only slightly earlier than our original removal date of September 1."

Maiselman added that private collectors and larger galleries have also offered to purchase the piece, but they have not yet "made a concrete decision on where the piece will go next," and are "exploring all options."

Where is Abraham Lincoln's melting statue in DC?

The statue was placed outside Garrison Elementary School on the site of Camp Barker, a Civil War-era refugee camp that housed formerly enslaved and freed African Americans.

"Commissioned by CulturalDC and supported in part by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities through the Public Art Building Communities Grant," the statue was installed in February 2024 and was meant to be on display until September 30, 2024, according to CulturalDC's website .

"The installation is a direct commentary on DC’s history of Civil War-era Contraband Camps, refugee camps that housed formerly enslaved and free African Americans," CulturalDC says.

A first version of the statue was previously installed in September 2023 with 100 wicks, but a group of people lit up the wicks causing the statue to melt before its opening, as per Williams. The incident upset many community members and a new statue, the one currently on display, was commissioned soon after.

Why is Lincoln's statue in D.C. made of wax?

Part of Williams' "40 ACRES Archive: The Wax Monument," initiated in 2021, the statue is part of a "collection of artworks, events, performances, films, and installations that highlight and connect important Black histories from around the country."

The collection aims to "flip traditional expectations of public monuments and memorials on their heads, as a way of opening up community conversations about change and public memory," according to a statement by Williams.

Williams said that the work is "meant to be impermanent" and is meant to experience change throughout its installation. Williams added that the sculpture is meant to be interactive and reflective of the ongoing changes around it. Once the structure disintegrates or is no longer deemed publicly safe, Williams collects the wax and recycles it for another project.

"While I do often encourage these sculptures to melt, I was not expecting this version of the artwork to melt in this way," Williams said in a statement. "This melting is 100% due to the unexpected heatwaves we are experiencing on the East Coast and around the world."

"I always joked that when the climate got worse, and we were living in weather hot enough to melt these sculptures, that this work would then become environmental art. I did not expect for that day to be this past weekend," they added.

British Politician Misses the Point of Banksy’s Glastonbury Boat Artwork

British Home Secretary James Cleverly misunderstood the work as a "celebration" of immigrant deaths.

A mysterious event that took place on Friday at the Glastonbury Festival saw an inflatable boat crowdsurfing as it carried several masked dummy figures in orange lifesaving vests. In an age when massive numbers of refugees and immigrants are flowing into Western countries, often driving their politicians and publics into anti-immigrant right-wing policies, the reference wasn’t hard to discern. 

In fact, the small craft embarked on its short voyage during a song by the band Idles, and one that expresses sympathy with immigrants, no less. “ Danny Nedelko ” opens with the lyrics, “My blood brother is an immigrant / a beautiful immigrant,” going on to refer to Queen frontman Freddie Mercury, born Farrokh Bulsara in Zanzibar to Parsi-Indian parents. People even thought it was part of the show.

But the band revealed the next day that the boat was an intervention by anonymous British street artist Banksy, and that it wasn’t in on the act, as reported by the Guardian , which noted that migration was a theme of this year’s festival.

Banksy confirmed the piece in his typical fashion, posting a video to Instagram on Sunday.

Now, Conservative Home Secretary James Cleverly has objected to the work in the most strenuous of terms, but he doesn’t seem to be in the slightest familiar with who he’s criticizing, even though the artist was voted his country’s favorite artist of all time in 2019 (beating out Van Gogh, Monet, and Leonardo da Vinci), and his positions aren’t hard to find out about. 

Cleverly took to Sky News yesterday to voice his complaints. 

“How do you know what that is commentary about?” asked host Matt Barbet.

Cleverly doesn’t address the question, saying only: “There are a bunch of people there joking about and celebrating about criminal actions which cost lives. People die. People die in the Mediterranean. They die in the Channel. This is not funny. It is vile. This is a celebration of the loss of life in the Channel.”

Cleverly’s response is wildly off the mark. Whether one enjoys Banksy’s brand of (perhaps obvious) wit or not, the artist is known for works that express sympathy with the plight of refugees, asylum seekers, and migrants, and even support them with actual money.

Let’s look at a few examples.

His mammoth 2015 installation Dismaland , a downbeat Disney-style amusement park, included the installation Refugee Pond , which featured remote-control boats filled with migrants; a mass exodus from war-torn Syria was underway at the time. At show’s end, Banksy sold the boats and donated the proceeds to a refugee camp in Calais, France, where Syrians were taking shelter. The park’s building materials, moreover, were converted into housing for refugees.

Another work from that year at that same camp depicted Apple founder Steve Jobs, himself the son of a Syrian immigrant, highlighting the contributions of immigrants to their adoptive nations. 

During the Venice Biennale in 2019, Banksy created Migrant Child , showing a child wearing a life jacket and carrying a flare, who seems to drown during high tide.

In 2014, in Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, meanwhile, the anonymous artist revealed Anti-immigration birds , in which a quintet of gray pigeons carry signs with messages like “Go back to Africa” and “Keep off our worms,” as a bright green bird, apparently the target of their anger, perches nearby. 

More recently, in 2020, the artist himself financed a refugee ship that roamed the Mediterranean in a search for refugees in need of aid.

In the Sky News interview, Barbett asked, “How do you know it’s not a commentary on your inability to handle the situation?” later challenging Cleverly, “You don’t know that’s a joke. Banksy makes political commentary on all sorts of things. Do you accept that it could be commentary on the Conservatives’ inability to sort that problem out?”

In response, in classical politician fashion, Cleverly ignores the question and strikes out at the Labour Party, who, he argued, have stood in the way of his party’s attempts to address the situation. 

The Conservatives’ policies on immigration have focused on boats, but as Barbett indicated, they have been ineffective. 

Conservative Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced five promises to the British people in 2023, one of them a pledge to “stop the boats,” as the Guardian reported yesterday , adding that the boats have continued to arrive in only greater numbers.

One Tory backbencher, Jacob Rees-Mogg, even echoed American ex-President Donald Trump, saying that he wants to “build a wall in the English Channel” in a leaked recording published in the Guardian . 

Banksy did not immediately respond to a request for comment, directed to his studio.

Kourtney Kardashian and Travis Barker take baby Rocky back on the road after Khloe Kardashian's birthday bash

Khloe returned to la for sister khloe's 40th birthday party.

On the road again!  Kourtney Kardashian and husband Travis Barker have left Los Angeles following her sister Khloe's 40th birthday celebrations to return to the Blink 182 tour.

The mom-of-four took to Instagram Stories to take fans along on the journey with her, as they traveled back to their tour bus in Arizona, as the band are playing in Glendale on July 2. Kourtney shared a picture of the bus, and later a snap from inside what appeared to be a rental home with gorgeous palm trees and the mountains in the background, revealing it was 112 degrees outside. 

In a later video, she showed off the swimming pool, perfect for cooling down in the desert heat. 

Travis has been touring the country with bandmates Mark Hoppus and Tom DeLonge, but the pair recently returned to LA from Texas where she had been cheering on her husband alongside their nine-month-old son Rocky and her nine-year-old son Reign. 

Kourtney is also mom to 14-year-old son Mason and daughter Penelope, 11; she welcomed the eldest three with ex-partner Scott Disick. Travis  is dad to son Landon, 15, and daughter Alabama, 18, and has helped raise ex-wife Shanna Moakler's daughter Atiana de la Hoya.

The family have been touring with Travis, and Kourt has been keeping fans updated, including most recently of their time in San Antonio, Texas.

"Peace and loud," Kourtney captioned her video, which also featured clips of a beach and the ocean view from a hotel room. 

But she returned to LA for younger sister  Khloe's lavish, Dolly Parton-inspired 40th party , as the Good American co-founder marked the milestone surrounded by family and friends who all wore denim. 

Khloe,  keeping fully on theme, dazzled in a denim corset adorned with rhinestones, cut-out jeans, a denim cowboy hat, and several diamond necklaces. 

Snoop Dogg was a guest, with sister Kim revealing that Khloe "had no idea" Snoop would be the surprise performer; Kim also captured Khloe's joy as she rapped along to the iconic star's music as he was joined on stage by Kurupt.

NBCUniversal and Warner Bros. Discovery picked up rights to show Big East games starting in the 2025-26 season, after CBS bowed out, marking the latest scramble by big media companies to create sports portfolios that drive big ratings but don’t rack up onerous annual costs.

Fox will stay on the BIg East roster. The collegiate athletic conference, which includes Georgetown University and the University of Connecticut, has proven competitive in men’s basketball and women’s field hockey, among other areas.

“Big East Basketball is among the most prestigious in all of college sports, and we’re proud to be able to feature the men’s and women’s teams across our NBCUniversal platforms,” said Rick Cordella, president, NBC Sports, in a statement. “The Big East has a storied basketball history, and we look forward to showcasing these games as the conference creates more memorable moments.” NBC Sports has worked to add more sports to Peacock overall, including extra NFL games. Sanctions Policy

Etsy provides a direct connection between buyers and sellers around the world. When you use Etsy’s services (we’ll refer to Etsy.com, Pattern by Etsy, our mobile apps, and other services as our “Services”), you are responsible for complying with this policy, regardless of your location.

This policy is a part of our Terms of Use . By using any of our Services, you agree to this policy and our Terms of Use.

As a global company based in the US with operations in other countries, Etsy must comply with economic sanctions and trade restrictions, including, but not limited to, those implemented by the Office of Foreign Assets Control ("OFAC") of the US Department of the Treasury. This means that Etsy or anyone using our Services cannot take part in transactions that involve designated people, places, or items that originate from certain places, as determined by agencies like OFAC, in addition to trade restrictions imposed by related laws and regulations.

This policy applies to anyone that uses our Services, regardless of their location. It is up to you to familiarize yourself with these restrictions.

For example, these restrictions generally prohibit, but are not limited to, transactions involving:

• The importation into the U.S. of the following products of Russian origin: fish, seafood, non-industrial diamonds, gold, and any other product as may be determined from time to time by the U.S. Secretary of Commerce.
• The exportation from the U.S., or by a U.S. person, of luxury goods, and other items as may be determined by the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, to any person located in Russia or Belarus. A list and description of ‘luxury goods’ can be found in Supplement No. 5 to Part 746 under the Federal Register.
• Items originating outside of the U.S. that are subject to the U.S. Tariff Act or related Acts concerning prohibiting the use of forced labor.

In order to protect our community and marketplace, Etsy takes steps to ensure compliance with sanctions programs. For example, Etsy prohibits members from using their accounts while in certain geographic locations. If we have reason to believe you are operating your account from a sanctioned location, such as any of the places listed above, or are otherwise in violation of any economic sanction or trade restriction, we may suspend or terminate your use of our Services. Members are generally not permitted to list, buy, or sell items that originate from sanctioned areas. This includes items that pre-date sanctions, since we have no way to verify when they were actually removed from the restricted location. Members are also generally not permitted to ship items to or from sanctioned areas. Etsy reserves the right to request that sellers provide additional information, disclose an item's country of origin in a listing, or take other steps to meet compliance obligations. It is important that members provide complete and accurate information regarding the origin of items on the Etsy marketplace to ensure compliance with sanctions programs. We may disable listings or cancel transactions that present a risk of violating this policy.

In addition to complying with OFAC and applicable local laws, Etsy members should be aware that other countries may have their own trade restrictions and that certain items may not be allowed for export or import under international laws. You should consult the laws of any jurisdiction when a transaction involves international parties.

Finally, Etsy members should be aware that third-party payment processors, such as PayPal, may independently monitor transactions for sanctions compliance and may block transactions as part of their own compliance programs. Etsy has no authority or control over the independent decision-making of these providers.

Eminem name-checks Tobey Maguire and recreates Spider-Man meme on new single

With great GOATness comes great responsibility.

Marshall Mathers is paying homage to another alliterative pop culture legend: Peter Parker.

In his new single “Tobey,” Eminem invokes Tobey Maguire ’s Spider-Man in a display of his typical boisterous bravado. “Tobey Maguire got bit by a spider. Me? Must've got bit by a goat,” he raps on the song, suggesting that just as Peter Parker’s radioactive arachnid bite gave him spider powers, Eminem’s self-appointed status as the GOAT (greatest of all time) must have been caused by a supernatural goat encounter. Poetry!

The Maguire references actually begin with featured collaborator BabyTron, who raps a similar line in the song’s chorus: “Tobey Maguire got bit by a spider, but see, me, it was a goat.” BabyTron previously referenced the Marvel character on his 2023 song “Spidey Senses,” in which he says, “When I pop a P, it's like Bruce Banner turning Hulk/S---, I feel my Spidey-Senses tinglin', spinnin' the McLaren.”

In addition to shouting out Spider-Man in the song’s lyrics, the album art for the single also references the superhero by recreating the Spider-Man pointing meme with crude illustrations of Eminem, BabyTron, and fellow Michigander collaborator Big Sean pointing at one another. The meme originated as a still from the 1960s Spider-Man cartoon, and was later recreated by Maguire, Tom Holland , and Andrew Garfield while promoting Spider-Man: No Way Home .

Spider-Man isn’t the only fictional character to whom the rappers allude. Elsewhere in the chorus, BabyTron raps, “My city Leia and I'm Obi-Wan, got a mission to pass, I just might be the hope,” in reference to Carrie Fisher ’s Princess Leia Organa telling Alec Guinness’ Obi-Wan Kenobi that he’s her only hope in the original 1977 Star Wars . Later, he says, “Ride around with the Iron Giant, make 'em eat metal,” referring to Brad Bird ’s 1999 animated classic The Iron Giant , in which the titular robot consumes scrap metal.

This also isn’t the first time that Eminem has associated himself with a Spider-Man character. In 2018, he contributed the song “Venom” to the Sony superhero movie of the same name, name-dropping the anti-hero’s alter-ego, Eddie Brock, and referencing the symbiote suit that gives him superpowers. The rapper also recorded the song “Last One Standing” for the movie’s 2021 sequel Venom: Let There Be Carnage .

The rapper is an avid fan of comic books and superhero memorabilia — in a 2012 profile , the Los Angeles Times notes that he initially hoped to be a comic book writer in his youth. In the Genius annotations for his 2013 song “Rap God,” in which he references General Zod and Thor, Eminem wrote, ”I’ve always been into comic books. Spiderman, Hulk, old Batmans, Supermans — mostly vintage Marvel s--- from before I was born. Just being able to have those pieces of history is crazy. I would not want to face off with somebody comparing comic book knowledge, but I know a pretty good amount.”

Eminem also met the Marvel anti-hero Frank Castle, also known as the Punisher , in a one-off crossover comic book in 2009. Clearly a big fan of the character, the musician criticized Netflix’s decision to cancel the Jon Bernthal –starring streaming series in 2019 on social media. 

Additionally, in 2020, Eminem referenced Spider-Man in his song “These Demons,” rapping “You get 'em on tape, they stick to a story/Like Spider-Man crawlin' upside of a wall.” He also made a brief appearance as a celebrity partygoer in the 2021 X-Men Hellfire Gala comic crossover event, and appeared on a variant cover of a Spider-Man comic in 2022.
