The Chattanooga Police Department is an accredited law enforcement agency located in Tennessee. The department responds 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to any requests for police service within the city limits. HAMILTON COUNTY PUBLIC RECORDS

Crime Numbers

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) provides crime statistics for Hamilton County. Its latest reports show that there were 26 murders, 169 rapes, 1,798 aggravated assaults, and 4,380 simple assaults in the county in 2018. Reported incidences of property crimes include 30 arsons, 2,079 burglaries, 353 robberies, 10,539 larceny thefts, and 1,845 motor vehicle thefts.

Compared to 2014 crime figures, rape (3%), aggravated assault (7.9%), simple assault (24.8%), and motor vehicle theft (33.1%) rates rose in Hamilton County in 2018. The five-year crime trend for the county also indicates falling murder (21.2%), arson (3.2%), burglary (32.7%), and larceny theft (2.5%) rates.

Remains found in Chattanooga identified as Georgia woman

The woman was reported missing in august 2023. a few months later in early january, her remains were found..

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WSMV) - Skeletal remains found near a Volkswagen plant in rural Chattanooga were confirmed by the Hamilton County Medical Examiner’s office to be those of a missing Georgia woman.

The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office confirmed they were the remains of 20-year-old Maury-Ange Faith Martinez. Martinez was a resident of Alpharetta, Georgia.

On Aug. 28, 2023, she was reported missing in Gwinnett County, but law enforcement later discovered her last known location was in Cobb County, Georgia.

In 2024, Martinez’s remains were found on Jan. 5.

Both Georgia and Tennessee law enforcement are urging anyone who may have seen or had contact with Martinez around the time of her disappearance or who may have any information related to her case to come forward.

Cars, catalytic converters stolen from Chattanooga police lot

A Chattanooga man faces 31 charges of auto burglary after reportedly stealing cars and catalytic converters from the police department's confiscation lot, according to court filings.

James Turpin, 39, was arrested Saturday night and also faces charges including trespassing, vandalism and tampering with evidence, court records show.

Among the cars reportedly stolen by Turpin was a Nissan truck involved in a November crash on Frazier Avenue that killed a mother and son and severely injured the family's father , according to a police report.

Turpin is set to appear in court next week, and he is being held at the Hamilton County Jail on a $20,000 bond, jail records show.

What happened?

Police say they were first told about a theft from the department's own confiscation lot on Wisdom Street, off Amnicola Highway, on April 29.

In the weeks before that, 56 catalytic converters were reportedly stolen, totaling more than $15,000 in value, according to police.

A golf cart was also stolen and later found nearby on train tracks. A Nissan truck being held as evidence in the fatal accident from November was also stolen, police reported.

The lot has security cameras, an alarm system and a chain link fence with barbed wire on top, according to the report. A large hole was reportedly cut in the fence, the report said.

Cameras showed a person looking through "almost every vehicle" in the lot and putting stolen items in the back of the Nissan truck before using bolt cutters to open and drive out of the front gate, police said.

Police were notified that Turpin had sold some scrap metal to a Rossville recycling facility on May 1, according to the report. Video footage showed him driving the Nissan truck. A Rossville officer reportedly tried to pull over Turpin in the truck April 26, the report states, but Turpin fled into Chattanooga.

Later on May 1, police went to Turpin's last known residence on 32nd Street in Chattanooga and found the Nissan truck under a tarp in a nearby field, which officers knew was sometimes used to store stolen cars, the report said.

Turpin also had a suspended license, according to police.

He was previously caught looking through the dumpster outside the police department's property division and taking some items out in March, according to the report.
