1. Add a header and contact information

While reading your cover letter, the recruiter shouldn’t have to look far to find who wrote it. Your document should include a basic heading with the following information:

  • Pronouns (optional)
  • Location (optional)
  • Email address
  • Phone number (optional)
  • Relevant links, such as your LinkedIn profile , portfolio, or personal website (optional)

You can pull this information directly from your CV. Put it together, and it will look something like this:

3. Draw them in with an opening story

Then you can get into the “Why” of your job application. Drive home what makes this specific job and this company so appealing to you. Perhaps you’re a fan of their products, you’re passionate about their mission, or you love their brand voice. Whatever the case, this section is where you share your enthusiasm for the role.

Here’s an example opening paragraph. In this scenario, you’re applying for a digital marketing role at a bicycle company:

“Dear Mr. John Doe,

Thank you for considering my application for the role of Marketing Coordinator at Bits n’ Bikes.

Simply put, you want to paint a fuller picture of what experiences and accomplishments make you a great hire and show off what you can sashay through their doors with and deliver once you land the job.

For example, what tells a hiring manager more about your ability to win back former clients? This: “I was in charge of identifying and re-engaging former clients.” Or this: “By analyzing past client surveys, NPS scores, and KPIs, as well as simply picking up the phone, I was able to bring both a data-driven approach and a human touch to the task of re-engaging former clients.”

If you're having trouble figuring out how to do this, try asking yourself these questions and finding answers that line up with the qualifications you’ve chosen to focus on:

  • What approach did you take to tackling one of the responsibilities you’ve mentioned on your resume?
  • What details would you include if you were telling someone a (very short!) story about how you accomplished one of your resume bullet points?
  • What about your personality, passion, or work ethic made you especially good at getting the job done?

Come up with your examples, then throw in a few numbers. Hiring managers love to see stats—they show you’ve had a measurable impact on an organization you’ve worked for. Did you bring in more clients than any of your peers? Put together an impressive number of events? Make a process at work 30% more efficient? Work it into your cover letter!

Step 7: Finish with a strong conclusion

It’s tempting to treat the final lines of your cover letter as a throwaway: “I look forward to hearing from you.” But your closing paragraph is your last chance to emphasize your enthusiasm for the company or how you’d be a great fit for the position. You can also use the end of your letter to add important details—like, say, the fact that you’re willing to relocate for the job.

Try something like this:

“I believe my energy, desire to innovate, and experience as a sales leader will serve OrangePurple Co. very well. I would love to meet to discuss the value I could add as your next West Coast Sales Director. I appreciate your consideration and hope to meet with you soon.”

Step 8: Reread and revise

We shouldn’t have to tell you to run your cover letter through spell-check, but remember that having your computer scan for typos isn’t the same as editing . Set your letter aside for a day or even just a few hours, and then read through it again with fresh eyes—you’ll probably notice some changes you want to make.

You might even want to ask a friend or family member to give it a look. In addition to asking them if they spot any errors, you should ask them two questions:

  • Does this sell me as the best person for the job?
  • Does it get you excited?

If the answer to either is “no,” or even slight hesitation, go back for another pass.

Remember, even if the company you send your speculative cover letter to doesn’t have any current job vacancies, opening a dialogue with them could help to ensure you are at the top of the list when a suitable vacancy comes up in the future.

Much like a standard cover letter , a speculative cover letter accompanies your CV when you are applying for a job. However, a speculative cover letter is different from a standard cover letter in a few ways.

Standard cover letters are usually sent when applying for an advertised vacancy and should be tailored to that vacancy. In contrast, a speculative cover letter is sent to apply for a job that has not been advertised.

Standard cover letters need to be highly focused on niche or specialist skills that are outlined in a job description or person specification.

In contrast, a speculative cover letter should:

  • Give details of your relevant transferable skills
  • Outline your past work experience
  • Demonstrate why you would be a good fit for the company

As with any cover letter, a well written speculative cover letter will provide you with the opportunity to engage with the recipient and start building up a positive rapport.

Where possible, try to send your speculative job application to a particular person, rather than a generic department.

If you are not sure of the name of the person you should send your speculative cover letter to, have a look at the employer’s website. Try to find out the name of the manager for the department you are interested in working for.

Alternatively, you could call the HR department to find out the name of the department manager.

Sending your speculative cover letter to a specific person will help to ensure your letter is read by the most appropriate employee or department. It will also show that you have carried out some background research into the company and its current employees.

You can choose to send a speculative cover letter by email or by letter. The advantage of a letter is that it will land on somebody’s desk, making it harder to ignore.

Your speculative cover letter will need to be both engaging and informative.

When writing your speculative cover letter, try not to repeat the information contained within your CV.

Don’t forget to include your name, address and contact details (including your mobile telephone number and email address).

If you are unable to find out the specific manager’s name, start your letter with ‘ Dear Sir/Madam ’ and close it with ‘ Yours faithfully ’.

If you have managed to find a named person to send the letter to, you can start your letter with ‘ Dear [Name] ’ and close the letter with ‘ Yours sincerely ’.

After you post your speculative cover letter, you will need to be patient. You probably won’t hear anything straight away but, hopefully, the recipient of your letter will be in touch to discuss job vacancies you may be suitable for.

If you still haven’t heard anything back within two weeks, it is advisable to follow up with the employer directly, to check that they have received your letter.

If they say that they haven’t received it, ask them whether they would be happy for you to re-send it over to them. At this point, you could find out whether they would be happy for you to send it by email, as they will know to look out for it in their inbox.

Find out as much as you possibly can about the business you are planning to write to. For example:

  • What is their mission statement?
  • What are their values?
  • What product or service do they provide?
  • Who are their customers?

The company website is a good place to start. You could also browse through relevant social media pages, press releases and industry-specific content like blogs or newsletters.

Or, if you find out that they are planning to expand or acquire another company, let them know if this is a process you have had experience with in the past.

It is important to keep your speculative cover letter short and to the point . Keep the content succinct and focused – doing so will help to ensure the recipient reads it and digests the information it contains.

A letter that is too long will probably end up in the waste paper bin before it has even been read.

Sometimes called a “letter of intent” or “letter of interest”, a cover letter is an introduction to the rest of your job application materials (e.g., resume/CV, research statement, teaching philosophy, writing samples, etc.). The purpose of a cover letter is to quickly summarize why you are applying to an organization or for a particular position, and what skills and knowledge you bring that make you the most suitable candidate for that position. The cover letter is often the first impression that a prospective employer will have of you, especially if they do not know you, or have not heard about you from their network of contacts. First impressions count, and so getting your cover letter right is a critical step in your job application process. Like all your job application materials, it may take time and focus to write your cover letters well. You will likely have several drafts before you come up with a final version that clearly articulates your skills and your understanding of the employer and the job requirements.

While your resume briefly states your skills, knowledge, experience, and (most importantly) what you have achieved using your abilities, the cover letter gives you an opportunity to create a narrative that shows the path you have taken in your career or education, emphasizing the skills you’ve used along the way, and explaining why the position you are applying to is the next desirable step on this path. Also, it is important to know that there are some differences between cover letters written for faculty positions and those written for non-faculty positions. When you start the process of looking for job opportunities, you will probably read through lots of job advertisements. You will notice that most job ads ask for a cover letter of some sort. The exception to this might be when you apply for some jobs through an employer’s online job application system, where they may ask you to upload your letter as a document, cut and paste the contents of your letter into specific fields, or they may not ask for a letter at all. For most jobs, and whenever you are submitting a formal application, cover letters are usually expected – and can be very helpful – even if a letter is not requested in the job ad itself.

Cover Letter Etiquette

You might be tempted to send the same version of your cover letter to multiple employers, especially if you are applying for similar types of positions. Don’t. It can be fairly obvious to an employer when they receive a stock letter, and this will make a bad first impression. Tailor your letter to the employer and to the specific job. This may require you to do some background research on the employer’s website, or talk to someone you know (or don’t yet know) who already works there. Use this information to explain why you want to work at that particular place, doing that particular job. It takes time, but it is worth it. You’ll probably have more luck with three tailored cover letters than with 30 stock letters sent out to 30 different employers. Your cover letter will be read by someone as part of a formal job application, so make certain that it is free of spelling mistakes, grammar issues, and typos. Make sure your cover letter fits onto 1 page (for non-academic position applications), has consistent margins and formatting, and a readable font that is between 10-12pts.

When Not to Use Cover Letters: There are some occasions during the job search process where cover letters shouldn’t be used. During career fairs, you would typically only hand out your resume to employers (and a 1-page resume is ideal). Employers want to be able to quickly scan your resume for the key points, and you should be able to verbally communicate some of the ideas that a letter might contain (for example, why this company interests you). Recruiters won’t have the time to read a letter.

Timeline: Getting Started with your Cover Letter

Step 1: The first step to writing a good cover letter is to first have a good resume. For information on putting these documents together, click here . Your cover letter expands upon some of the information you include within these documents, and describes the role you have played in achieving your academic or non-academic goals (i.e., showing how your experiences have made you the best candidate for the position).

Step 2: The next step is to find an open position that interests you, or at least the type of job to which you want to apply. There is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all cover letter, as each should be tailored to each job you apply to, but there will certainly be parts of the letter that will stay much the same, and be appropriate for multiple jobs. This might mean changing some of the key words in the letter, so that you are describing your experience in the employer’s language (using some of their keywords), not your own.

Step 3: Go through the job ad and carefully note all of the requirements and skills the employer is looking for. Based on your background research of the employer and the people you have spoken to who know about this employer, try to identify the two or three most important skills that the employer is looking for. You should then try to create a cover letter that illustrates that you have these skills and have used them effectively. Your cover letter will be stronger if it addresses these requirements and the job duties.  Ensure that you talk about your experiences in the language used by the employer, echoing their words in descriptions you use to illustrate your skills. Write out a list of the keywords that you highlighted from the job ad, and then next to each of these words, write a brief statement that illustrates the fact that you have this skill/ability/knowledge using a specific example. You may not have an experience for all of the requirements, but the more you think about what you have achieved, the more likely it is that you will find something relevant to talk about. When you have all of this information, then you can begin to structure it within the format of a formal cover letter.

The opening paragraph should explain why you are writing, giving your specific employment interest. Mention how you found out about the position. If it was advertised, refer to the website or resource in which you saw it. If a contact told you about it, say so. It is also helpful to include an overall summary of the key skills, knowledge areas, or experiences that you are bring to this role right here in the first paragraph. If you start off with these very specific conclusions that confidently state that you have what the employer is looking for, then the reader will also have a lot of confidence that your letter and resume are worth reading. The next paragraphs will then expand on and illustrate what you are summarizing in this first paragraph.

The middle paragraph(s) should summarize the aspects of your background which will interest the employer. The more information you have about the organization and its needs, the better.  Discuss your qualifications in terms of the contributions you can make. While you should not repeat your resume verbatim, don’t hesitate to refer to the most important information discussed in it. Ideally, both your cover letter and your CV/resume would be able to stand alone. It is not necessary to describe yourself in superlatives. Rather than saying, “I can make a uniquely valuable contribution to your organization,” give the employer enough relevant, targeted information to allow the reader to reach that conclusion independently. Be specific and credible. Tell stories that have a touch of drama, for example: “When I was working as the president of X student group, one of the challenges that we faced was XYZ.” Once you have created a touch of drama, describe how you used your skills to overcome it, for example: “So what I had to do was build relationships with administrators on campus by communicating the critical role our group played in doing ABC.” Once you have told the story, reflect on it in terms of how this is particularly relevant for the reader, for example: “I really enjoyed being placed in a position where I had to reach out to contact and bring them all together by creating a shared vision for everyone to buy into. I think this combination of strong marketing skills and relationship building will be valuable to the role of Advertising Associate.”

The closing paragraph should explain why the position and the particular organization is attractive to you, and should hopefully pave the way for the interview. Provide an authentic reason why you are excited about bringing your skills to the role, and what you will also gain from being in the role. Speaking with former or current employees at the organization as part of your networking will help in this regards.  You can also offer to send any additional information, restate your contact details, and state that you look forward to hearing from them.

How to Write a Prospecting Cover Letter

Also known as a letter of inquiry or a cold call letter, a prospecting cover letter is a useful tool if you have an interest in a company that isn’t actively hiring or isn’t widely advertising. A prospecting cover letter expresses interest in learning about available positions, demonstrates initiative and eagerness, and puts yourself at the front of the interview line when or if the company decides to expand its talent pool.

However, the problem remains: how do I write a successful prospecting cover letter? It’s a common question to ask, especially to construct one that isn’t overreaching, a simple laundry list of your skills, or a blanket template that you send to every employer. A prospecting letter is a dynamic piece that should balance your skills with tact, leaving a potential hiring manager with the details they might need about a prospective candidate for future openings. If you have a few companies that you’ve always dreamed of working for, use these tips to help you construct an intriguing, well-written prospecting cover letter.

Research Several Companies

Even if you only have a sole company in mind, don’t limit yourself by submitting just one prospecting cover letter. Cast a wide net by constructing a list of five to 10 companies. To choose these companies, you can make criteria such as mission, vision, company culture, or opportunity for advancement. Or you use the following research methods to compile your list of prospective companies:

  • Use social media platforms, especially LinkedIn, to connect with people who work for the company
  • Reach out to former colleagues, coworkers, or classmates that now work for one of your target companies
  • Perform an online search for companies in your field of expertise using search terms like “Top Marketing Companies” or “Best Software Development Firms”

Know Who You’re Writing To

While you can address your prospecting letter to a generic “Dear Sir or Madam” or the ubiquitous “Dear Hiring Manager,” you will make the best impression if you do a some investigative work to reveal the man or woman who makes the important decisions. Some methods you can try to find the person who you’ll resonate with might include:

  • Explore the company’s website staff directory or try to find the person on LinkedIn.  Look for human resources contacts or a person with the title of Hiring Manager.
  • Check the company’s website for job listings.  You can do this even if the jobs are not related to your desired position. The job ads will likely list a company hiring contact.
  • Call the company.  This old-school approach is surprisingly effective if you’ve exhausted all other avenues. Simply ask the receptionist for the name of the hiring manager. If you feel strange being so straightforward, ask to verify the correct spelling of the hiring manager’s name before you send out an email.

If all else fails, you can still go with a nonspecific title. But if you can track down the right person, it shows initiative and that personal touch. Or when all else is equal, it makes you stand out

How To Grab the Attention of the Hiring Manager

A prospecting cover letter is a means to introduce yourself to a company, list your qualifications, and inquire about open positions. However, your letter shouldn’t read like a technical manual. A hiring manager will read thousands of cover letters over his/her career. They may even fall under the “ six-second rule .” This is the idea that you have six seconds to grab the attention of the person reading your cover letter. If you don’t, your application falls squarely in the reject pile. Thus, you can use your prospecting letter to set yourself apart from the field.

Keep in mind that the expansion of remote work has created fiercer competition than ever. Here’s how to make your cover letter stand out:

  • Draw in the hiring manager with a powerful opening sentence.  Praise the company or immediately state your best qualification.
  • Write in a tone that is industry-suitable.  Don’t use casual, regional slang if you want to work for a national company.
  • Use humor and whimsy when appropriate.  But don’t try to be a comedy writer if you are interested in a position as a Senior-level Business Analyst.
  • Add personalization.  Inject your own research about the company instead of submitting a stock form letter to all of your prospects.

With these brave words to use on your resume to attract the attention of potential employers.

Demonstrate How You Can Add Value to the Organization

While incorporating the aforementioned attention grabbers, you also need to discuss how you can potentially add value to the organization. Yet this isn’t just a list of accomplishments or braggadocious commentary. The difficulty of this task is further exacerbated by the fact that you’re not applying to a specific position. Instead, you need something that’s more broad on how you would fit into any relevant position within the company.

You can certainly start with tasteful examples of past successes and how they would translate to a position with the company you’re prospecting. Furthermore, highlight some of your transferrable and employable skills that make you an attractive candidate for the future. These can be a mix of hard and soft skills. Here are some examples of what you may add based on your own unique skill set:

  • Training others
  • Collaborative skills
  • Conflict Resolution
  • Strong communication skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Leading productive meetings
  • Hiring and interviewing
  • Various computer skills or proficiencies
  • Goal setting and task prioritization
  • Time management and multitasking
  • Ability to learn new skills

You can obviously come up with more on your own, but the main idea is to provide a sense of what you bring to the company the next time they have an open position.

Finish Up With the Next Phase

Although you could end a prospecting cover letter with a simple “Regards” or “Sincerely,” this doesn’t tie the letter together like providing information for the next step or phase in the process. Instead, include contact information such as an email or phone number, as well as links to your LinkedIn page or online portfolio. While not absolutely necessary, you could provide your resume for the hiring manager to peruse at his or her leisure.

Example of a Great Prospecting Cover Letter

Even if you have a basic idea of how to ride a superb prospecting letter, seeing an example can provide you with the framework to shape one to your personality and writing style. Remember that hiring managers have been around; they’ve seen templates before, and a surefire way to have your email disregarded is to simply copy one of these examples. Use these to your advantage, but don’t copy them or paraphrase them where the origin becomes obvious or the prosepecting letter loses its personal touch.

Once you’ve taken a deep breath and clicked the send button on your prospecting cover letter, your job isn’t quite done yet. You still need to follow up. However, this isn’t like a traditional follow-up that you’d have after the interview. If you haven’t heard anything back in a few weeks, start your follow-up by seeing if the company has posted any jobs recently. If they have, it’s worth your time to apply to a position you want or to reach out to the contact you emailed before. By doing so, you can solidify your name among a pool of applicants, as well as put your best foot forward toward finding the perfect job for your career aspirations.

Here's another example of cover letter phrasing that captures the attention of hiring managers:

“I'm rather obsessed with personal organization. I read three organizational blogs on my own time, and I've organized my desktop folders into color-coded sub-categories. My friends laugh at me for saying things like, ‘An organized space equals an organized mind,' but I don't like wasting time looking for things.” 

Now compare that to this less specific phrasing:

“I have a proven track record of being organized, and I have a passion for it. I have a proven knack for keeping files organized on an ongoing basis, and I have put organizational processes and procedures in place for my department. The bottom line is organization is always my highest priority.” 

2. Prove your level of dedication to your profession.

Another way to stand out is to illustrate specific things about your dedication to your field. In the following example, a candidate showcases her dedication to her profession, proves that she spends a lot of time thinking about driving results in her field, and shows that she takes concrete steps in order to be a high quality contributor in her field. All of which goes a long way when it comes time for hiring managers to decide which candidates to interview. 

“I believe that a good marketing strategy requires seeking out the latest trends and staying one step ahead of the competition. I've attended the Traction conference two years in a row and completed the 2018 Reforge Growth Series, a highly credible and exclusive course that only accepts 10 percent of applicants and is built by leaders from Hubspot, Uber, and other firms. Through these professional developments, I've opened my mind to uncommon marketing methods, and I pride myself on thinking outside the box to develop strategies that create sustainable, low-cost customer acquisition loops that lead to long-term positive ROI.” 

Now compare the above to the below, which is less detailed and includes less specific phrasing:

“I have the skills and requirements for this position, and I believe I would complete every task asked of me to the highest standard expected. My background and experience make me an excellent fit for this position for many reasons. I am very interested in marketing, and I think I would be a great asset to the team.”

3. Include concrete, quantitative results that show your value.

In any written application, you'll need to showcase some form of quantitative results to stand out. Note that even if you don't have a lot of shiny results in your career yet (or even any relevant experience—which is okay!), you can still use words to capture someone's attention with what you have done. And if you do have a record of achieving quantifiable results, then by all means include them, like in the below:

“I developed several Google ad campaigns that were worth more than $500,000 and that resulted in high-level customers. Also, through testing and optimization, I increased newsletter sign-ups by more than 200 percent.”

Now compare that to this bland sentence:

“I have experience in Google ad campaigns, as well as experience in testing and optimization.”

WASHINGTON — Some of the 51 “Spies Who Lie” were active CIA contractors when they claimed files from first son Hunter Biden’s laptop had “the classic earmarks” of Russian disinformation ahead of the 2020 election — a fact that was uneasily noted inside the agency, records acquired by The Post show.

Former CIA acting director Michael Morell,  who previously told Congress he organized the Oct. 19, 2020 , letter to give former Vice President Joe Biden a “talking point” ahead of a debate against then-President Donald Trump, was under contract with the CIA at the time, the agency told Congress.

Ex-agency inspector general David Buckley also was a contractor at the time of the letter, according to an interim report from two House committees investigating the matter, and records suggest that at least two other letter-signers may also have had active contracts at the time.

Several of the people who signed the "Spies Who Lie" letter about Hunter Biden's laptop were active CIA contractors, according to records.

The terms of the contracts and compensation were not immediately clear.

Morell flatly denied he was a contractor when contacted by The Post, writing Tuesday in an email, “If you write that, you would [be] wrong.”

Morell doubled down in a second email, writing that “I can’t” speculate on why he was listed as such by the agency he once led and insisting: “It’s wrong.”

A congressional source provided The Post with  the CIA’s document  outing Morell as a contractor after his denial.

Robert Dugas, CIA deputy general counsel for litigation and investigations, shared the information in an April 25 letter to House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) and Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Turner (R-Ohio).

“I write to provide an UNCLASSIFIED document related to your … letters seeking information,” Dugas wrote, along with a five-name chart that listed Morell and Buckley, who could not be reached for comment, as contractors on the date of the laptop letter.

“The evidence in our report speaks for itself and it seems that the spy who lied is continuing to do so,” Russell Dye, a spokesman for the Judiciary Committee, fired back Tuesday evening.

The letter claimed that stories about the infamous laptop had had "the classic earmarks" of Russian disinformation.

The five-name table identifying Morell as a contractor specified that former CIA Director John Brennan and fellow letter-signers Nick Rasmussen and Marc Polymeropoulos had no such arrangement.

The letter suggesting that laptop files linking Joe Biden to his relatives’ foreign dealings were Russian disinformation notably only described signers as “former” intelligence operatives.

The document was controversial within the CIA, internal records indicate.

“This frustrates me. I don’t think it is helpful to the Agency in the long run,” a CIA official whose identity was redacted wrote on Oct. 20, 2020 — the day after the  letter was distributed to Politico  — with a link to the outlet’s story.

Former CIA acting director Michael Morell, who organized the letter, was a CIA contractor at the time.

“I also love that at least a few of the random signatures belong to individuals currently working here on contracts…,” responded another official, whose name also was redacted.

The Hatch Act bars most CIA employees from engaging in partisan political activity, but the status of contractors is murkier. A 2015 intelligence community directive on contract personnel, for example,  doesn’t mention the issue.

A second table provided by the CIA to Congress shows laptop letter-signers who had contracts and “green badge” access with the agency — indicating other signatories had formal relationships with The Company.

That table indicates that Morell’s contract lapsed at some point after Oct. 19, 2020, and that he entered into a new contract on May 1, 2021, as an “independent contractor” — with a “no fee senior advisory services” role.

Morell’s colleague at Beacon Global Strategies, letter-signer Jeremy Bash, is identified in the second table as an “independent contractor” as well — serving as a “contractor/green badge” holder from April 2, 2019, through April 1, 2022, with a brief gap before receiving a new deal beginning in August 2022.

Yet another letter-signer, former National Security Agency deputy director Richard Ledgett, was also listed as having the same status at the time of the letter.

The disclosures are contained within  an interim report  by the House Intelligence Committee and the Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government — which also reveals that then-CIA Director Gina Haspel likely knew about the letter when it was submitted for review.

Former CIA inspector general David Buckley was also a CIA contractor at the time.

“The new information included in this report, based on new testimony and declassified documents, shows the potential dangers of a politicized intelligence community,” says the interim report, which the CIA reviewed prior to distribution.

“Some of the signatories of the statement were on the CIA payroll at the time as contractors and others had special access to CIA facilities.

“Even Michael Morell — before the Committees learned of his contract with the CIA — acknowledged, ‘It’s inappropriate for a currently serving staff officer or contractor to be involved in the political process.'”

The congressional report adds: “Due to purported operational concerns, the CIA declined to declassify the entire universe of signatories who were on active contract.”

A CIA official wrote that the letter about Hunter Biden's laptop won't be "helpful to the Agency in the long run."

Then-candidate Biden used the intelligence alumni letter to falsely claim at his second and final 2020 presidential debate with Trump that The Post’s reporting on his role in his family’s international business dealings was a “Russian plant” and “garbage.”

“There are 50 former national intelligence folks who said that what he’s accusing me of is a Russian plant,” Biden said of Trump. “Five former heads of the CIA, both parties, say what he’s saying is a bunch of garbage. Nobody believes it except his good friend Rudy Giuliani.”  

The FBI, which took possession of the laptop in 2019 before a copy of the hard drive was provided to The Post in 2020, told Twitter on the day of the initial bombshell reporting  that the laptop was authentic , but the bureau’s stance was not widely known until well after the election.

Morell testified to Congress last year that he was inspired to organize the letter after receiving a call from future Secretary of State Antony Blinken, a longtime Biden adviser.

The Post’s first laptop bombshell — published five days before the 51-person letter — revealed that Vadym Pozharskyi, an executive at the Ukrainian gas company Burisma,  emailed Hunter  in 2015 to thank him for the “opportunity to meet your father” — directly contradicting Biden’s  2019 claim  that he’d “never spoken” with his son about “his overseas business dealings.”

Joe Biden cited the letter in his second debate with then-President Donald Trump to claim that The Post's stories on Hunter's laptop were a "Russian plant."

The Biden campaign initially denied that the meeting happened , noting it was not on “official schedules” — but further reporting established that Joe Biden did in fact attend a 2015 dinner in DC  with Pozharskyi and Biden family patrons from Russia and Kazakhstan one day before the Burisma exec’s thank-you note.

Hunter Biden himself confirmed his dad’s attendance during House impeachment inquiry testimony this February, saying, “I do believe that Vadym was at one of these dinners, yes.”

The then-second son earned up to $1 million per year to serve on Burisma’s board from 2014 to 2019, despite no relevant industry experience, beginning shortly after his father assumed control of the Obama administration’s Ukraine policy.

A second October 2020 bombshell from The Post — published four days before the spies’ statement —  described communications  about Hunter Biden and his uncle James Biden’s venture with Chinese state-linked CEFC China Energy. That story’s accuracy also has been affirmed by additional reporting.

A May 13, 2017, email from the laptop said  the “big guy” — Joe Biden — was penciled in for a 10% stake in a proposed joint entity involving CEFC, The Post reported in its scoop.

The Biden family’s relationship with CEFC began around 2015 while Biden was still vice president, additional reporting indicates. Joe Biden met with the company’s chairman , Ye Jianming, in early 2017 before an initial $1 million flowed to Hunter and James Biden, former Biden family associate Rob Walker testified to Congress this year. Ye has since gone missing in China amid corruption allegations.

Hunter Biden in July 2017 wrote that he was “sitting here with my father” in a threatening message to a China-based CEFC associate demanding to know “why the commitment made has not been fulfilled,” IRS whistleblower Joseph Ziegler revealed to Congress last year. Within 10 days of that message, another $5.1 million flowed from CEFC to accounts linked to Hunter and James Biden.

James Biden confirmed to the House impeachment inquiry in February that he gave $40,000 of his CEFC income to the future president as part of an alleged loan repayment.

The CIA issued a statement Tuesday night that did not elaborate on the agency contracts with “former” officeholders who signed the letter. 

The agency focused primarily on defending the pre-publication review process that inspected the statement for classified information and found that there was none — allowing for its public release.

“CIA officers, as a condition of their employment, are required to sign a secrecy agreement that includes a lifelong obligation to submit any and all intelligence-related materials to CIA’s Pre-Publication Review Board (PCRB) before they are published. That process was followed in this case,” a CIA spokeswoman said.

“The PCRB reviews material to determine if they contain any classified information. The PCRB’s confirmation that information is unclassified is never an endorsement of the reviewed content or its veracity. These former officers were not speaking for CIA.”
