Manchester Writing School: Creative Writing Summer School

Manchester Metropolitan University

This two-day intensive course is designed to give participants a taste of life in the manchester writing school at manchester metropolitan university, one of the uk’s most successful literary centres, and home to the country’s largest postgraduate english and creative writing community..

The course will introduce you to tutors and current students and offer opportunities to develop your own writing – and reading – in a lively and supportive environment. The programme will include a choice of in-person or online masterclass workshops, seminars and talks, delivered by practising writers and critics, with input from special guests.

Sessions may include fiction, poetry, writing for children & young adults, scriptwriting, creative non-fiction, how to present your work for publication, performance skills, and talks/Q&As with industry experts. The full programme will be confirmed and circulated in advance, and you will be asked to choose which sessions you would like to attend each day, which are all subject to availability. You will also be asked to let us know, when confirming your session choices, if you have any specific learning or accessibility needs.

Our 2023 Creative Writing Summer School will run on 22nd and 23rd June 2023 with a choice of in-person and online sessions. Core sessions will run between 9.30am and 5.30pm both days, with comfort breaks scheduled throughout, and optional evening events. Further details for 2023, including timetables, delivery modes and booking options, will be confirmed in early June. This course is unaccredited and doesn’t carry any formal assessment or academic credits. It could help you develop or hone your writing portfolio, if you are working towards applying for one of our degree programmes.

Creative City: Workshops, Classes and artistry in Manchester

People have said all kinds of things about Anthony Wilson. It’s well-documented that he played a vital role in creating modern Manchester and its global reputation.

But what did he do? What was he actually good at? Well, he was an enabler. He could spot potential and he enabled people to do what they were good at. Sounds simple but when you think about it, it’s pretty amazing. To be enabled is to be empowered.

There are huge amounts of talent out there and any city worth its salt should attract creativity from all over the region. The city should offer this talent a chance to meet like-minded people, try things out and discover what they are good at.

Manchester is full of these opportunities and they’re not exclusive to people who live here. Our city is a creative hub and everyone is welcome. One-day and part-time workshops and courses are a great excuse to visit Manchester, make a weekend of it or just get to know the city over several weeks.

And if you’re wondering whether you’re good enough, the answer is yes. You don’t have to be the next Picasso. Creativity is for everyone. Whatever form of expression captures your imagination, with or (sadly) without Anthony Wilson, Manchester will always be the best enabler around.

The workshops run by HOME are every bit as multi-disciplined as their programme. HOME is focused on talent development and creative careers and their and workshops connect talented people with professionals working in film, television, theatre, music, production and visual art. Find one that’s right for you .

As well as being one of the most varied and popular arts venues in the region, The Lowry also offers workshops and courses for all ages. They offer introductions to all kinds of things like singing, acting, clowning, flamenco, opera, dance and life-drawing. Take a look at their workshops .

Manchester Art Gallery

The workshops run by Manchester Art Gallery don’t teach you how to paint, they use their collection to show how to take notice, share stories, be mindful, make conversation and explore philosophical questions. Their workshops are open, friendly and most are free so don’t be shy and take a look at what’s coming up .

Manchester Craft and Design Centre

One of the founding pillars of the Northern Quarter, Manchester Craft and Design Centre has been a haven of creativity since the early eighties. They run a constantly changing programme of (hard to categorise!) workshops. Be it embroidery, photography, screen printing or anything else, places can be booked directly from their website .

The Whitworth

The Whitworth isn’t there just to show off its collection in beautiful surroundings. It’s also home to The Independent Art School and they use the Whitworth’s collection as the starting point for a range of workshops and classes. Classes cover a range of disciplines, they’re usually weekly and cost around £49 for four weeks.

Royal Exchange Theatre

If creativity is to thrive, it needs a safe place to learn, develop and take risks. Be it playwriting, acting or directing, Royal Exchange Theatre is committed to providing a nurturing environment for emerging talent. Take a look at their creative opportunities .

As well as workshops run by Manchester’s big attractions and venues, there are all sorts of creative courses on offer. The listings below are not comprehensive – they may even be the tip of the ice berg. We are confident that Manchester really can bring out the creative side in anyone but we can’t recommend or endorse any particular workshop or course provider.

With the University of Manchester’s Centre for New Writing and Manchester Metropolitan University’s Writing School , Manchester has some of the best post-graduate creative writing courses in the country. But of course, post-graduate courses may not be for everyone.

Young Identity is an arts organisation that runs weekly workshops for writers, poets, performers and spoken word artists between 13-25. It’s a very supportive creative environment and everyone’s welcome. Visit their website for workshop information.

There are Manchester Writing Days that take place at Manchester Art Gallery every second Saturday of the month. Just take a poem and ten copies for supportive feedback and writing exercises. The days are run by The Poetry Business and places cost around £40.

Write Here… in Manchester run seven-week creative writing courses that take place on Monday nights. The courses include weekly workshops and expert tuition. Courses are selective and numbers are limited so check their site for costs and dates of the next course.

If you fancy having a go at stand-up comedy, there are tons of open-mic nights taking place in Manchester. It takes guts, but you can just get up there and do it. If you want to try things out first, in a supportive environment, it can really help to get some help and advice.

The Frog and Bucket is Manchester’s longest running comedy club. As well as being a great place to see comedy, they also do an eight-week course for £200. It doesn’t just help you to develop funnier jokes, it teaches you about being on stage, how to get gigs and even deal with hecklers. Take the plunge and book a place on the next course .

Comedysportz Manchester run workshops and classes for improv, stand up and sketch writing. They’re usually one-day courses on Saturdays or Sundays so come for the course and stay for the weekend. Browse their upcoming courses .

Comedian, writer and actor Jane Postlethwaite runs three different Women’s Workshops, usually on Saturdays. They cover comedy writing, stand-up and comedy character development. They book up quickly so keep your eyes peeled for her upcoming workshops .

Floating Art Workshop runs some of the most affordable art classes in town. For example, they have Friday and Saturday workshops for Japanese painting, botanical art, printmaking, oil and watercolour for around £15 per class – materials included! Take a look at what’s on next .

Creative Art Courses are based at The Gallery Studio in Hope Mill, just outside the city centre. Evenings, weekends or mid-week, they offer lots of art classes that teach several disciplines and cover every level. So seriously, if you haven’t picked up a brush since childhood, this is a great place to start.

Chorlton Alternative Arts offer regular Wednesday life-drawing classes. Well, they call them classes but they are keen to point out that they do not teach. They help and offer advice but are more interested in helping you to develop your own style. Take a look at their upcoming classes .

Clay Studio in Hulme run six-week, weekend or one-off workshops and also offer private tuition and even family workshops. And if you’re reading for a creative friend who never finds time for their talent, Clay Studio do workshop gift vouchers. Take a look at their workshops .

Seven Limes Pottery is based at the Windrush Millenium Centre, a couple of miles south of the city centre. They run taster and beginner courses as well as full weekend courses for pottery wheel throwing. They also do gift vouchers so check out their courses .

2. Poetry : Poetry is undoubtedly the most artistic form of writing, it’s being widely read but less recognized. Poetry is a category of creative writing that may not frequently appear on bestseller lists, but a writer should not disregard it. Any format can be used to write a poem.

Dialogue:  Dialogue writing is another form of creative writing. It’s a verbal exchange between characters. It refers to the language that characters use to communicate with one another. Figurative language, such as metaphors and phrases, may be used in this, using such an approach creates a better appeal and leaves room for imagination and explanation. A character’s language choice and dialogue can play a significant role in defining who they are as a person.

Point of View: A writer can express their plot from the first, second, or third person’s point of view. This is not fixed; it is chosen by the writer. When writing a story, it’s important to acknowledge who is telling it and to whom.

The use of an appropriate point of view allows the writer to touch on important points in the storyline. Meet Llayna and Saniah Maul: Twins with unique passions are Godby valedictorian, salutatorian

Llayna and Saniah Maul, 17, are identical twins, but under the surface, they are totally different.

Saniah is drawn to pinks and bright colors. Llayna loves darker hues like black.

Llayna enjoys writing creative stories about gothic horror. Saniah has a passion for fashion.

Their personalities differ but they both share a love for learning.

On May 22, the twins will graduate from Amos P. Godby High School with Llayna as valedictorian, the top-ranked student in a class, and Saniah as salutatorian, the student who ranks second highest.

"We are very intrinsically motivated," Saniah said. "A lot of people think the work I put in is for grades or the accolades but it's not. My passion for learning drives me, I just want to do the best that I can."

"I don't work for the grades, they just come on their own."

After starting high school in 2020 remotely through the Florida Virtual School, the twins transferred to Godby High in 2022 and began taking dual enrollment classes at Tallahassee Community College.

At Godby, they excelled in their academic classes and joined extracurriculars, like the theater club, and were inducted into the National Honor Society.

Their most recent joint achievement was performing at the Florida Thespian Festival in Tampa with Godby's theater troupe in the school's one-act show "Rumpelstiltskin," which won several awards.

"They are amazing individuals and creative. They are both very different even though they're twins and they're very hardworking. I am going to miss them both very much," said Randi Lundgren, Godby's theater teacher.

Their parents, James and Annie Leonard, said they got an early start on educating their girls, often playing music and reading to them while they were still in cribs.

"This isn't a surprise, because in our house the importance of family and education has always been a priority. I believe the foundation to a good education is an early start," said Annie Leonard, her husband sitting next to her.

"They really like being challenged, in a good way, of course, and I like that. They don't settle," said James Leonard, a grocery employee. "They try to learn as much as they can."

The parents, who also have two adult sons, see their daughters as an inspiration. That is why Annie, a stay-at-home mom, who also graduated from Godby High, has decided to pursue a career in teaching. She's taking classes online with Western Governor's University.

"The way they learn has inspired me to become a teacher, because I feel like the stuff I did with them when they were smaller kind of fueled their love for learning and I just want to bounce that off some more kids," she said.

The twins expressed gratitude to their parents for instilling within them an understanding that a free public education is a privilege.

"People really spend their whole lives working for things that we can learn for free, especially people from our demographic who were once barred from having access to education, so why not take advantage of it," Llayna said.

The twins are both nominated for Leon County's Best and Brightest class of 2024 , with Saniah in the arts category, and Llayna in the English language arts category. Winners will be announced May 15 during a ceremony at the Ruby Diamond Concert Hall.

Saniah Maul: The 'bubbly' one

Her parents call her their "bubbly baby," full of energy and contagious joy.

Saniah plans to start at Florida A&M University in the fall as a junior majoring in Animal Science Industry. She says she wants to be a wildlife veterinarian and, later on, a science teacher.

"I like zoology, really. Animals are just so different and I love them," Saniah said.

According to her mother, Saniah is a "doer," meaning if she has a desire to do something, she executes it immediately, no planning necessary.

She holds two Advanced Placement Scholar Awards and a community service award from Godby High.

Llayna Maul: The meticulous writer

Llayna likes structure and, before she does anything, she makes a plan which is why she hasn't decided which university she'll attend, but she knows she wants to major in psychology.

"I'm still weighing all my options," she said. "I think that learning about the science of why people do the things that they do is really interesting."

Llayna enjoys reading and writing gothic and horror stories, and as president of TCC's creative writing club, she focuses her entries on those themes. She is a recipient of the Yale Book Award, which is given to students who excel in English language arts and literature.

Their parents said they support their girls no matter what, and they know brighter things await them in the future.

"I am going to support my kids in whatever they want to do, wherever they want to go, wherever they feel like they can learn the most, because I know that learning is their first priority," James Leonard said.

Course overview.

If you have the potential to study at degree level, but you don’t meet the entry requirements, a foundation year can help bridge the gap – laying the groundwork for entry into Year 1.

The units you’ll study are designed to build your confidence and bring you up to speed for the rest of your chosen degree. As well as the 'Academic Practice' units, which help develop your study skills for learning at degree-level, you’ll also study a selection of humanities units. Once you have successfully passed your foundation year you will progress directly onto Year 1 of your linked honours degree.

Course Information

All humanities foundation year students study the Academic Practice 1 and 2 units which will help you to develop the academic and study skills required for degree-level work. You will also study units in Approaches to Creative Writing, Modern Britain Since 1945 and Understanding the Language of Culture.

Teaching is delivered via a range of methods including lectures, seminars, tutorials and, where appropriate, practical workshops, PC lab sessions, and online learning.

Successful completion of the foundation year guarantees automatic progression onto Year 1 of the degree you have chosen to study.

Accreditations, Awards and Endorsements

Teaching Excellence Framework 2023-2027 We have received an overall gold status in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF), meaning we're rated as an outstanding university for our student experience.

You will also have the opportunity to participate in Uniwide Languages , a unit offering you the chance to learn a language alongside your degree. This unit will replace Modern Britain Since 1945 1 and Modern Britain Since 1945 2.

International students who do not meet the IELTS requirement are placed on the foundation year international route which offers additional English language study skills and tutor support through the English for Academic Study unit. This unit will replace Introduction to Culture and Understanding the Language of Culture.

Academic Practice 1

This unit will promote a successful transition to higher education study by developing the skills required for the study of humanities and social science disciplines. Areas covered include independence and initiative, search strategies, reading and writing for academic purposes, critical thinking, and academic integrity, including use of appropriate citation and referencing conventions. The unit also encourages knowledge and familiarity with university regulations and the range of Student Support Services.

Academic Practice 2

Developing on Academic Practice (1), this unit will embed core academic practice and develop research skills associated with humanities and social science disciplines. Students will work in discipline clusters to extend knowledge of specific disciplinary practices especially related to research. Students will select from a range of projects or live briefs negotiated with a supporting and supervising tutor to engage in either curriculum, community or career. Students will deliver a presentation of the project and its outcomes for assessment.

Approaches to Creative Writing

A foundational introduction to the key skills and processes of creative writing. Students will progress as readers and as writers by participating in workshop sessions, developing their own original work in prose, poetry and script, and reflecting on their process.

Approaches to Texts

A foundational introduction to the skills of close reading and textual analysis, focusing on a selection of texts that may include literary and cultural, critical and theoretical, film and media, historical and philosophical.

Introduction to Culture

Students will be introduced to a range of definitions of culture and sub-culture. Using a range of lenses (eg age, race, class, location, gender, sexuality, religion, role), students will begin to critique a range of everyday texts and manifestations of culture. The unit provides a sound foundation for students progressing on to courses of literature, language and linguistics promoting a critical awareness of salient features of a range of artefacts.

Modern Britain Since 1945 1

This unit evaluates key social, political and economic developments in British history between 1945 to 2000.  It assesses the key changes in society following the end of the Second World War. Key topics include: politics and the post-war consensus, youth culture, immigration and race relations and Thatcher and Thatcherism.

Modern Britain Since 1945 2

This unit evaluates further key social, political and economic developments in British history during the period 1945-2000.  It assesses the changing nature of society following the end of the Second World War.  Key topics include: the British economy, the Swinging Sixties, the rise of pressure groups and popular campaigns and the Miner's Strike.

Understanding the Language of Culture

Students will become familiar with relevant technical vocabulary used to explain linguistic and rhetorical devices, and to facilitate close analysis of texts. Artefacts include political speech, social media posts, popular music, literary texts, newspapers, films and advertisements.  Students will prepare commentaries on chosen texts. Peer interaction will be embedded into the approach throughout the units in order to take an inclusive approach in which students can share their own cultural assumptions and ideologies.

Option units

English for academic study (option unit).

The unit focuses on reading, writing, listening and speaking, from within both an academic and general context. The unit is designed for non-native English speakers to prepare them for the academic demands of their degree course, as well as helping them with daily English needs. The unit content is largely based on the development of academic skills, notably writing and speaking, to give you confidence in your written work and oral presentations. General English is also focused on, however, as the means to helps you develop your abilities in English communication needed outside the classroom.

Uniwide Languages

Students will take 2x 15 credit Uniwide language units. Languages available include French, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Modern Standard Arabic or Spanish and at a range of levels, subject to viability. You will be assessed in speaking, listening, reading and writing using an integrated skills approach.

Fees and Funding

Foundation year students.

UK and Channel Islands full-time foundation year fee: £9,250 per year for the foundation year. This tuition fee is agreed subject to UK government policy and parliamentary regulation and may increase each academic year in line with inflation or UK government policy for both new and continuing students.

EU and Non-EU international full-time foundation year fee: £18,500 per year. When progressing from the pre-degree foundation year to the linked degree. Tuition fees will remain the same for each year of your course providing you complete it in the normal timeframe (no repeat years or breaks in study)

Additional Information

A degree typically comprises 360 credits, a DipHE 240 credits, a CertHE 120 credits, and an integrated masters 480 credits. All of the books required for the course are available from the library. The University also has PC labs and a laptop loan service. However, many students choose to buy some of the core textbooks for the course and/or a laptop. Students may also need to print their assignments and other documents. Campus printing costs start from 5p per page. Estimated costs are £300 for a laptop up to £100 each year for books and printing. Total optional cost: £600

Successful completion of the foundation year guarantees automatic progression into Year 1 of your chosen linked degree.

Graduates of BA (Hons) Creative Writing   enter a wide range of careers, especially media work and teaching, where their transferable skills are particularly relevant. Recent graduates have become school and college teachers, and some have gained employment in fields as diverse as banking, finance, manufacturing and retail.

There is also the opportunity to engage in further study and professional training, for example some of our graduates go on to study creative writing at postgraduate level at our Manchester Writing School under the creative direction of Professor Carol Ann Duffy DBE (Poet Laureate 2009-2019). More than 85 former students of the Manchester Writing School have embarked upon careers as published writers.
