How to make a quiet book: a guide to making one of your own.

Do I have hyperlexia? Is my child hyperlexic? Take the free online hyperlexia quiz today!

I started making a quiet book for each of my boys back in September 2012.  They were intended to be Christmas presents, but, frankly, I was just too excited to wait until Christmas.

I have also made a mini quiet book as a Christmas gift for a friend's son, but that one was a lot less detailed and was easier to make overall.

So when I posted pictures of the quiet books on my personal Facebook page, the responses were overwhelming. Soon I had friends asking me, "How do I make a quiet book?"

Well, here are my tips, tricks, and suggestions for how to make a quiet book , including lots of quiet book ideas  to inspire you!

There's also a free printable quiet book planner  that you can grab a copy of to help you plan out the pages you want to make.

Some of the best quiet book pages though, in my opinion, are on Imagine Our Life .  She hand sews her quiet book pages, which is more hardcore than I would ever attempt to be.  Regardless, they are some of the most beautiful pages I have come across.  And she includes a pattern and instructions for most (if not all) of her quiet book pages.

Another blog that has some quiet book page templates is Serving Pink Lemonade .  Her pages are a lot more simple than the ones on Imagine our Life, but they are still pretty nice.

How to Make a Quiet Book Tip #2: Play Into Your Child's Interests

Think about your child's interests and think about how you can incorporate those interests into a quiet book page.  For instance, J enjoyed playing with letters and spelling words.  So I made two quiet book pages that had individual letters of the alphabet on velcro and a pocket filled with three letters words for him to practice spelling.  Another example would be the number train I had made for the mini quiet book.  The little boy it was made for loved trains, so it just made sense to include a train page.

How to Make a Quiet Book Tip #3: Consider Your Child's Age

Depending on the age of your child, you may want to consider the following:

  • Exclude small pieces that might present a choking hazard
  • Design pages that practice developmentally appropriate skills (e.g., buttoning buttons, zipping zippers, etc.)
  • Make pages that can grow with the child
  • Make the size of the finished quiet book appropriate for the age of your child (e.g., smaller book for smaller toddlers like the mini quiet books I made for Garrett  or  Emma ) or for its intended purpose (e.g., smaller book for use in the car or at doctor's office)
  • Design pages that represent real life activities and skills (e.g., brushing teeth, setting the table, brushing hair)
  • Include pieces that crinkle or rattle or jingle

How to Make a Quiet Book Tip #4: Plan Out Your Quiet Book Pages Before You Sew

Sketch out the pages that you want to make, marking what colors the pieces will be or what supplies you will need for each page.  Or print off any templates that you may find on the internet.

I was terrible at this step.  I am more of a spontaneous crafter so there were times when I didn't have the supplies on hand and had to put the page on hold until I got the necessary piece.  Or I decided to make pages that were completely different than the ones that I had sketched.

Other considerations while planning your book:

  • Your budget for the project (if you have one)
  • How big do you want the book to be?
  • How many pages do you want to make?
  • What fabrics do you want to use?
  • How do you want to make them?  Sewn by hand?  Sewn with a machine?  Hot glue?  Or a combination?

How to Make a Quiet Book Tip #5: Collect the Needed Supplies

After you have sketched out your pages, you will have a better idea of how many zippers you need or how much velcro you need, etc.  You'll also know what colors of fabric you need.  Purchase what you don't have so that you can have everything ready. Here are some suggestions for supplies that you may need:

  • Felt sheets
  • Sewing machine
  • Hot glue gun (for the no sew route!)

How to Make a Quiet Book Tip #6: How to Assemble the Quiet Book Pages

I found it helpful to cut out the pieces and organize them onto the page.  This step allows you to see how it will look when it is sewn together.  It also allows you the flexibility to make changes to the design before anything is actually sewn.

How to Make a Quiet Book Tip #7: Be Prepared. Making a Quiet Book is Time Consuming...and Addicting!

Perhaps one of the most surprising things about making a quiet book was how time consuming it actually was.  I spent the better half of 2.5-3 months cutting, sewing, assembling, and even dreaming of quiet book pages!  So don't say I didn't warn you!

Also, I found that designing and sewing new quiet book pages became somewhat addicting.  I just wanted to make more, more, more.  Like I said, I started to dream about new quiet book pages.

My Final Suggestions for Making a Quiet Book

Here is my final list of tips and suggestions:

  • Use binder rings to put your book together.  Doing so allows you to swap pages in and out or from book to book.  It also allows you to add to the book in case you want to make the quiet book bigger.
  • If you are making quiet books for more than one child in the same house, make duplicates of pages that you think might be ones they fight over.  I should have made an alphabet page for K's book since he always wants to play with the one in J's book.  It causes fights and tears almost every single time.
  • Put a handle on the spine.  Both of the boys love being able to carry their own book around.
  • Make a velcro or magnetic closure for the book so that it closes up nicely.  K loves to play with the closure over and over.
  • Put your child's name on the front cover if you are making quiet books for more than one child.  That way they know whose is whose.
  • Plan out the order for the pages in the book, especially if sewing pages back to back.
  • You don't have to be an amazing sewer.  My sewing was rushed and sub-par in many places, but that did not detract in any way from the enjoyment those pages still brought to my children.  They don't care if you can't sew straight or that you used thread that didn't match the fabric.  I have also seen quiet book pages made entirely using a glue gun!
  • Finally, have fun!  They are a lot of work, but totally worth it.  They make an amazing keepsake for little ones and will keep them busy for many hours.

How to Get Started with DIY Quiet Book Patterns

Making a DIY quiet book can be a fun and rewarding project, whether you’re crafting for your own child, as a gift, or simply for the joy of making something unique and educational. Quiet books, also known as busy books, are fabric or felt books filled with interactive pages that keep little ones engaged through textures, colors, and activities. Here’s a step-by-step guide to get you started on your quiet book journey.

Choosing Your Quiet Book Theme

First and foremost, decide on a theme for your quiet book. This could be based on your child’s interests, educational concepts you’d like to introduce, or simply fun and engaging activities. Popular themes include:

  • Alphabet and Numbers
  • Animals and Nature
  • Daily Routines
  • Fantasy and Adventure
  • Shapes and Colors

Gathering Materials

Before you dive into making your quiet book, you’ll need to gather some essential materials. Here’s a basic list to get you started:

  • Felt or Fabric: The base of your quiet book pages. Choose various colors for a vibrant look.
  • Scissors: For cutting fabric or felt into shapes and designs.
  • Thread and Needle: For sewing your pages and pieces together. Alternatively, fabric glue can be used for a no-sew option.
  • Velcro, Buttons, and Zippers: To add interactive elements to your pages.
  • Templates or Patterns: Use free patterns available online or make your own designs.

Planning Your Pages

Before you start cutting and sewing, plan out your quiet book pages. Each page should feature an activity or concept you want to introduce. Sketch your ideas on paper first, considering how each page will look and function. Keep in mind the size of your quiet book, as this will determine the size of your pages and pieces.

Making Your First Page

  • Cut Your Base Pages: Cut two pieces of felt or fabric in your chosen size. These will be the front and back of your first page.
  • Design Your Activity: Lay out the pieces of your activity on one of the base pages. This is where you can get creative with shapes, colors, and interactive elements.
  • Sew or Glue: Carefully sew or glue your pieces onto the base page. If you’re adding buttons, zippers, or Velcro, make sure they are securely attached.
  • Attach Pages Together: Once your activity page is complete, place the second base page behind it and sew around the edges to finish it off. Leave a small opening if you need to add stuffing for a padded look.

Assembling Your Quiet Book

After completing all your pages:

  • Make a Cover: Cut two larger pieces of fabric or felt for your book cover. You can decorate it with the book’s title or other designs.
  • Bind Your Pages: Line up all your pages in order and sew them together along one edge to make a spine. Alternatively, you can punch holes and use rings or ribbon to bind the pages.

Tips for Success

  • Start Small: If this is your first quiet book, consider starting with a smaller book with fewer pages to make the project more manageable.
  • Involve Your Child: If possible, involve your child in the creation process. They can help choose themes, colors, and activities they’re interested in.
  • Be Patient: Making a quiet book takes time and patience, especially if you’re new to sewing or crafting. Enjoy the process!

Customization Ideas for DIY Quiet Book Patterns

Making a quiet book is not just about following patterns; it’s about adding your personal touch to make it unique. Here are some ideas to inspire you to customize your quiet book patterns:

Choose a Theme

Start by selecting a theme that resonates with you or the child you’re making the book for. Themes can range from nature , animals , and seasons to alphabet , numbers , and daily routines . A themed quiet book not only looks cohesive but can also be educational.

Mix and Match Fabrics

Don’t be afraid to mix different textures and colors of fabrics. Use felt , cotton , satin , or even denim . Combining various materials can stimulate a child’s sense of touch and add visual interest to the pages.

Add Personal Elements

Incorporate elements that have a personal meaning. For example, if you’re making a book for your child, include their favorite colors , shapes , or characters . You can even add family photos in secure pockets.

Interactive Features

Make the book engaging by adding interactive elements like buttons , zippers , latches , and flaps . These features not only make the book fun but also help develop fine motor skills.

Embellish with Embroidery

If you enjoy embroidery, add some stitched details to your quiet book. It could be a simple border or an elaborate scene. Embroidery adds a beautiful, handmade touch to each page.

Safety First

While customizing, always keep safety in mind. Ensure all small parts are securely attached, and avoid loose items that could pose a choking hazard for young children.

Skill Level Assessment for DIY Quiet Book Patterns

Troubleshooting Tips for DIY Quiet Book Patterns

When crafting a DIY quiet book, you might encounter a few hiccups along the way. Here are some troubleshooting tips to help you overcome common challenges:

Cutting Fabric Pieces

Fabric pieces don’t match the pattern sizes.

Always double-check measurements before cutting. Use sharp scissors or a rotary cutter for precise edges.

Securing Pages

Pages are not staying together.

Reinforce the binding with strong thread or use book rings for easy page turning.

Attaching Small Parts

Small parts like buttons are coming loose.

Secure them with strong adhesive or sew them on with a tight stitch pattern.

Aligning Elements

Elements on the page are misaligned.

Use a ruler and fabric chalk to mark alignments before attaching elements.

Washable Pages

Concerns about the quiet book getting dirty.

Choose washable fabrics and avoid glue. Add a care label with washing instructions.

Maintenance and Care for DIY Quiet Books

Ensuring your DIY quiet book remains in great condition is essential, especially since it’s a cherished item that can be used and loved for many years. Here’s how to maintain and care for your quiet book:

Choosing the Right Materials

Durability : Opt for high-quality, durable fabrics that can withstand frequent handling. Washable : Select materials that are easy to clean and maintain.

Cleaning Instructions

Spot Cleaning : For small stains, use a damp cloth with mild soap to gently clean the affected area. Machine Washing : If the book is machine washable, use a gentle cycle with cold water and air dry.

Storage Tips

Keep Dry : Store the quiet book in a dry place to prevent mold and mildew. Avoid Sunlight : Direct sunlight can fade the colors, so it’s best to keep the book in a shaded area.

Regular Checks

Inspect Regularly : Check for any loose parts or wear and tear that may need fixing. Repairs : Mend any tears or reattach loose items to keep the book safe for use.

By following maintenance tips, your DIY quiet book will bring joy for a long time.

DIY Felt Quiet Book – Free Printable Pattern

July 9, 2020 by Laura 6 Comments

Last Updated on July 29, 2020

Learn how to make this sweet little DIY felt quiet book with a free printable pattern! This is a beginner-friendly project with simple sewing instructions. Quiet books are a great resource for helping little ones with fine motor skills, and they’re quiet! Who’s with me in wishing that all toys with sirens and loud noises be banished from the earth?! 😀

Make this simple DIY felt quiet book with tutorial and free printable pattern. Help your toddlers with fine motor skills, colour recognition and counting with some easy to sew quiet book pages. Beginner friendly quiet book pattern.

This post contains affiliate links. Read more .

I made this quiet book a few years ago for a friend. I recently found all the pattern pieces and I wanted to share them here for free!

This isn’t exactly a comprehensive DIY tutorial. Because this project is from a while back I don’t have pictures of the process. But I’d rather share this free quiet book pattern with incomplete instructions rather than not share it at all.

It should be fairly intuitive to assemble if you have some sewing experience but I’ll do my best to describe each page.

PLEASE READ: Disclaimer. There are beads and buttons sewn into this DIY felt quiet book. Make sure they are very secure or omit them altogether if your toddler has the strength to rip them out. They could be a choking hazard. Please supervise use of the book if you do include the beads and buttons.

DIY Felt Quiet Book

The idea behind quiet books is that they are tactile and interactive for toddlers to explore. So be sure you use a variety of different materials for little hands to discover.

Make sure you print the pattern at 100%. For this book I cut out 4 ‘pages’ on the fold.

*note: I get all my wool blend felt from this shop .*

**another note: If you love crafting with felt, check out my many posts in the Felt Crafts section .**

Each page gets made individually then layered with another page and stitched all around the edges to contain the wrong side of the page.

For the cover page, I cut out the first initial, J in this case, of the name of the child the book was for. Then I stitched a layer of super-soft minky fabric to fill in the initial. The minky is so soft to stroke!

Free Quiet Book Pages

The ladybug page is very simple. Stitch the bug body to the page and use some mixed buttons for the spots.

The strawberry is double-layered. On the top layer, I stitched some seed beads very securely to mimic strawberry seeds. Then added the backing layer and stitched it halfway down on the page. I added a little butterfly under the bottom half of the strawberry.

Make a peek-a-boo strawberry page for this DIY quiet book

This next page incorporates a few different skills. It encourages counting, shape and colour recognition as well as developing fine motor skills.

At the bottom of the page, stitch down one small square, triangle and circle, in different colours, and catch the end of a thin cord in the stitching. You may even want to tie a knot in the end of the cord before stitching it in to ensure it can’t slip out again.

Thread each cord with a different number, colour and size of beads.

Then stitch the matching shape at the other end of the page, catching the ends of the cords.

Make a counting and geometric shapes page for this free quiet book pattern

For the pear page, cut out two pears and use a blanket stitch to edge the inside of the holes. Machine stitch the two layers of pear all around the edges.

Cut out two caterpillars and stitch them together with the end of a length of ribbon sandwiched between them.

Stitch the leaf and stem to the page, then position the pear with the other end of the caterpillar ribbon coming out the top and machine stitch it right down the center.

The idea is that the two pear halfs are movable so that the caterpillar can be easily threaded through the holes.

Make a cute caterpillar nibbling on a pear for a quiet book

This sun page is nice and simple too. 🙂

Stitch the sun circle down to the middle of the page. I made mine a little fancy with embroidery, but you don’t have to do that.

Punch 16 holes around the sun. A good hole-puncher should do the trick, but test it out on some scrap felt first.

Take 8 lengths of different ribbons. I used ribbons with metallic threads so they would be interesting to touch and also sparkly like the sun!

Tie a knot in one end and thread a bead onto the ribbon. Feed the ribbon through one punched hole, under the sun center and back up through the opposite punched hole. Add a bead and tie a knot.

The ribbons can now be pulled from end to end and the beads run along the lengths too.

Make a sun and ribbon quiet book page to help develop fine motor skills

Lastly I made this hot air balloon page.

I decorated the balloon with interesting metallic and scratchy ribbon and embroidered ric rac. Then stitched the balloon down and stuffed it lightly so it would pop off the page.

Make an air balloon for this DIY Quiet book

To finish off, I stitched the (brown) cover page to the (green) strawberry and ladybug page.

Then the (tan) pear page to the (blue) sun and balloon page.

Then layer and stitch a ‘binding’ seam down the center of everything.

That’s it! These are basic pages, but still so fun for kids to play with.

Toddlers will love playing with this easy to sew quiet book. Use the free quiet book pattern and beginner friendly techniques to make a fun new toy

Your ideas and work are lovely. My only concern is the use of buttons and beads in a project aimed at children under the age of 3 . These can be broken off and can cause a choking hazard.

Hi Jean, Yes that’s true. It would be at the discretion of the crafter to decide if the child in question is likely to to hurt themselves with certain elements of the book. Beads and buttons can just be left out if that’s the case. Or the child should be supervised while they play with the book. Thanks for reading!

Love the sun! Very new to this so curious what stitch you used for stitching the circle to the page? I’m guessing something on a sewing machine but which one?

September 12, 2021 at 7:19 pm

Thanks! Actually it’s hand-stitched. I just did a backstitch all the way around the perimeter, about 1/4″ from the edge. Then went back around and did a zigzag stitch. 🙂

Free Quiet Book Patterns

If there’s one thing that little ones are suuuper good at, it’s being noisy. Normally, these sweet sounds are music to a parents ear (to a certain degree, let’s be reasonable here), but there are times (most of the time?) when “shhhh”ing just doesn’t do the trick. If you’re a parent, you know the value in some quiet distraction, and know that the busier those little fingers can be, the happier (and often quieter!) the toddler can be :). Quiet books are the perfect tool to keep little ones happy, practice their motor skills, and of course,  quiet! This looks wonderful. I have my first great grandson and can’t wait to start this for him. You did a great job on both and I love the ideas. Thank you so much.

sherri

Hooray Kathryn! I’m so glad to hear it! 🙂

Nanna Ray

Thanks so much for these tutorials. I have been planning a QB for my youngest grandson and your tutes will be a bonus. Hopefully will have one finished for Xmas this year.

Hooray! I’m so glad 🙂 I’m sure it will be amazing and he’ll love it!

Peaches

These are fantastic ideas! I love how some of them are fun stuff and others are educational, like the pants and belt page, and the belly button? TOO CUTE! My best friend in the whole wide world is due to have a baby in the fall, and now I can’t wait to make a book for them!

Thanks so much Peaches! I’m so glad you like it!

charlotte

Hi! This is really nice. For which age do you think this is the perfect gift? I would love to make one but as I don’t have kids myself yet, I’m a bit in doubt..

Hi Charlotte. I think it works well for kids from ages about 1-3. Though my kids still like looking through them! Some of the pages can be made into pillows or other things for older kids as well.

Theresa Holz

Recently, a young woman suggested we look into making similiar activity books but for alzheimer patients. Still chewing on ideas.

I’ve heard this also Theresa! Lots of great ideas online for them, and they are also good as quilt blocks to make a lap quilt!

Violette

I am enjoying this. I have copied the other one from 2014 and I am now copying this one – don’t want to miss out on anything. I will be making this for my adorable Grandson. When my children were small I made 14 quiet books for them and they used them a lot, but now I would like to make these as well. I would like my Grand Children to have special from me to keep for after I am gone. Thank you.

Lisa // Cucicucicoo: Eco Sewing and Crafting

Oh, this is just amazing!! I cannot believe all of the meticulous work that goes into one of these! I’m just sitting here with my mouth open, staring! 🙂 Lisa

Oh my goodness, Lisa! Thank you SO MUCH! I’m so glad you like it. It is a lot of work, but the end result is so worth it!

Cheri

I made 2 MANY years ago for my daughter, so I know how well the kids love the books! Yours look amazing! I have one question… I have been reading and don’t see anywhere where the size of the page is mentioned…are they 12×12 or is that to big? To a point I know it is however big I want it, but for the acitvity that yours have…how big do you recommend for a page? I just got my last grand child (a boy) 2 weeks ago and want to start making his book now.

Hi Cheri! (Great name by the way!) Thanks so much! Each page in this tutorial is roughly 8″ or so wide by 9″ or so high. I found this was nice for the kids to play with and was still manageable to carry around 🙂 Hope that helps!

Patricia Ramirez

Janet

Thank you for this tutorial. I made beautiful quiet books for me year-0ld twin granddaughters and can say they love them. However, I have recently had to remove the ribbon that was eased to put pages into the covers and replace with grommets. Perhaps because they were young, the pages got all twisted together. I will use grommets from now on.

I’m so glad you made the books Janet! Great tip on the ribbons – thanks for letting us know!

Michaela

Thanks so much for this great tutorial. Now I learned not only how to create the pages but also how to bring everything together. I’ll make one for my second grandson.

Make the Perfect Quiet Book

Quiet books are perfect for those squirmy little ones that need to sit still and be quiet.  Quiet Books are WAAAAAY better than a cell phone or a tablet because they offer imaginative play.  A Quiet Book is made of fabric (typically felt). Each page is usually focused on a different skill or interaction. They are colorful, provide a new platform for learning, and inspire independent play and creativity. These books are great for travel or moments when you might need to keep your child occupied and quiet/focused.  Here are a few more reasons to love Quiet Books:

✅playing with books helps to develop fine-motor skills and finger-type grabbing; ✅practice memory, logic and mental agility; ✅practice attention, sound, tactile and visual perception; ✅pages and removable elements are soft and pleasant; ✅different texture of materials.

There are tons of offers for patterns and materials out there.  After doing some research, I have rounded up some really great options for you to consider when making a Quiet Play book.  Let me show you all about it!

Love this idea! My 2 year old grandson would love one of these!

Love the subscription idea! I could start now and have a partial book done by Christmas. I figure that additional pages would be nice things to send my granddaughter in the mail.

I love your quiet books. My mother suffers from dementia and destroys all books including board books. I’m going to try quiet books. They can be hand washed and can’t be ripped. Thank you for the idea. This will keep her happy with simple activities.

I love your idea to make one for your Mom. You can also do a search on “busy books” or “Fidget Quilts”. Those are very popular and can give you more ideas for your Mom. Happy Sewing!

How to make a quiet book (Free Patterns)

Hi Creative Mamas! I am super thrilled to share with you how to make a quiet book! This quiet book is very close to my heart because its a recreation of the book I used to play with when I was little.

When I was a child, I used to draw my own dolls . I used to give them names and make new paper clothes for them. Then, one day, I discovered that I could make flat felt dolls that resembled my paper ones. This was a huge discovery for me because fabric doesn’t break and my felt dolls would last way longer than my paper ones.

So, I made a collection of flat felt dolls. Every doll had several outfits. I used to have so much fun! Then another discovery! I made a very basic looking folder out of fabric that would hold all my felt dolls and their clothes . this was a game changer because I never ever lost a doll again!

How to make a quiet book tutorial

Today, as a grown up woman I still love making flat felt dolls, love playing dress up with them and absolutely love making a quiet book for girls to use and play with. Let me show you how to make a quiet book for girls to play dress up dolls .

What is the difference between a quiet book and a fabric book?

A quiet book is a soft book made from fabric and its typically made for children to help them learn and play . Usually we consider quiet books to be interactive, they h ave some sort of activity for kids to interact with.

A fabric book is also a soft book made out of fabric but doesn’t necessarily include an interactive activity within its pages. It can be a memory book, a fabric collage book or a mini quilted book. Possibilities are endless. Check out this step by step tutorial on how to make a fabric book using upcycled fabric. You may also be interested in this tutorial that teaches you how to make a fabric book cover.

In this post I will show you how to make a quiet book which is specifically designed for girls . Its a dollhouse quiet book and its meant for girls to get creative by changing the doll’s clothes and becoming little designers.

How to make a quiet book tutorial

For this tutorial you need 3 flat felt dolls. To make the dolls please go to How to make a doll using Doll Patterns (Free) and follow the step by step instructions.

How to make a Quiet Book using free doll patterns

The starting point for this quiet book tutorial is to make the flat felt dolls and a few garments first. So your starting point should look like the illustration below 🙂

How to make a quiet book tutorial 1

Once you have the dolls made up you can start making the quiet book 🙂

Using your rotary cutter and your cutting mat, cut 8 pieces of fabric 11 inches by 11 inches. Make sure you use your quilting ruler to ensure the panels are the correct measurements.

For this tutorial I have used:

  • 2 pieces of 100 % cotton which I have tied dyes using natural dyes. Read the tutorial here.
  • 2 pieces of upcycled 100 % cotton (pink) from my fabric stash
  • 4 pieces of 100 % wool suiting fabric which was left over from a pair of pants I have recently made

It’s important to use natural fibers since we are going to be using applique and we will use a hot iron on top of our fabrics. If we use synthetic fibers we can melt them. If you want a quick way to know what fibers are natural and which ones are not check out how to do a Fabric Burn Test here.

How to make a quiet book tutorial 3

Press the fabric panels flat.

How to make a quiet book tutorial 5

Pin 2 panels together. You will have 4 double pages in the final book.

For this tutorial I kept it super simple and I used the two tie dyed panels together, the two pink panels together and the 4 black wool panels together as well.

How to make a quiet book tutorial 6

Decide which double panel will be the front and back cover and sew them together with a 1/4 seam allowance. Do the same for the 2 panels which will be in the middle of the book. Press seams open.

In this case my covers are the tie dyed panels ad my middle pages are the pink cotton ones.

How to make a quiet book tutorial 8

For the other two double pages, sew them together but you need to leave a gap in the middle as shown in illustration below.

How to make a quiet book tutorial 9

Make sure you leave a big enough gap for your hand. This will be the gap that we will use to turn the book pages inside out at the end of the tutorial.

How to make a quiet book tutorial 10

Cut two 100 % cotton batting pieces to fit the covers and the pink double pages.

How to make a quiet book tutorial 11

You will quilt these panels using the quilting technique quilt as you go, which is my favorite technique for quilting! See these other quilt as you go tutorial here:

Quilt straight lines parallel to the center seam. Start from the middle and quilt towards the right. when you finish go back to the center seam and start quilting towards the left.

How to make a quiet book tutorial 13

The front and back covers and the middle double pages should look like these once they have been quilted. You can decide to quilt just the cover. this is up to you. I like the texture that its created by the quilting :).

How to make a quiet book tutorial 15

Book front and back covers :

This is a long step because we are going to be using applique to make an amazing book cover. Feel free to apply these same principles throughout the book if you wish 🙂

Using the Flat Felt Doll Patterns (available in my FREE RESOURCE LIBRARY — get the password for free by filling out the form above) and the Heat and Bond iron on adhesive, trace around the clothing pattern pieces. You can also use the girl’s body as a guide and create your own items of clothing to fir her body size.

How to make a quiet book tutorial 16

When using the Heat and Bond be sure to trace on the paper side of the sheet. the glue side will be in contact with the wrong side of the fabric.

How to make a quiet book tutorial 17

Cut around the traced shapes and place on top of the wrong side of the cotton fabric scraps.

How to make a quiet book tutorial 18

Place a hot non steam iron on top of paper side as shown in illustration.

How to make a quiet book tutorial 19

Once the fusible has been glued on the wrong side of the fabric, cut around the traced shapes.

How to make a quiet book tutorial 20

Cut strips of felt in contrasting colors to the book fabric panels. you need to cut 5.

How to make a quiet book tutorial 22

These strips will be the clothes line where we are going to hang the little applique clothes. Pin them in place making sure to cover the whole front cover.

How to make a quiet book tutorial 23

Place the clothe under the line to make sure that you are happy with the placement before anything is sewn or fused.

How to make a quiet book tutorial 24

Sew the felt strips in place using a wise zig zag stitch in matching thread.

How to make a quiet book tutorial 25

Cut a little rectangle from the leftover of the fused fabric scraps and place it under the clothesline. This will be the clothes peg. Remove the paper side of the iron on adhesive from the wrong side of the fabric and with a hot iron press in place. Repeat this process with all 4 pegs.

How to make a quiet book tutorial 26

Now do the same with the clothes. Peel away the iron on adhesive from the back of the clothes and press under the little peg.

How to make a quiet book tutorial 29

It’s time to stitch around the applique pieces. You need to top stitch all around them. I have used my default stitch length and my regular sewing cotton but you can use heavier top stitch cotton if you prefer. Repeat this process for all clothing pieces which have been appliqued.

How to make a quiet book tutorial 32

I have also used one of my sewing machine embroidery stitches. I have a Bernina and this is the blanket stitch which is part of the default fancy stitches.

How to make a quiet book tutorial 35

At this point the cover is completed so let’s get on with the rest of the book 🙂

Pin the felt strips which were previously cut to the right page of the double pages.

These strips will be the clothes line where we are going to hang the different items of clothing which have velcro on the back. Please note that this book pages are not made out of felt which means that the clothes with velcro will not stick to the fabric page. the clothes will only stick to the felt doll.

We will hang the clothes from the clothes lines using mini wooden pegs

How to make a quiet book tutorial 36

Sew in place using a wide zig zag stitch. Only sew the ends of the strip to allow the clothes line to hold the clothing pegs later on.

How to make a quiet book tutorial 37

We now have the four double pages and they should look like the illustration below 🙂

How to make a quiet book tutorial 38

It’s now time to incorporate the flat felt doll that you have created following this tutorial. For this book you will need to make 3 dolls.

Cut a piece of velcro and glue it to the left page of the double page. Use fabric glue for this step.

How to make a quiet book tutorial 39

Make sure the flat felt doll has velcro as well and that the sizes match.

How to make a quiet book tutorial 40

The three double pages should look like this.

How to make a quiet book tutorial 41

How to make a quiet book tutorial Recap:

By this stage you should have:

  • 3 flat felt dolls
  • 1 double page which is the front and back covers with applique
  • 3 double pages with the clothes lines and velcro applied.

How to sew the quiet book?

It’s now time to sew the quiet book together. In order to do this we need to understand how the pages are actually relating to each other. In the graphic below I have drawn a little sketch for you to refer to in case you get confused. For this quiet book Follow the following guidelines:

  • Sew the front and the back covers to a double with a gap in the middle
  • Sew the tie dyed double page to a double page with a gap in the middle.

Note that the front and back covers as well as the tie dyed double page have the batting, are quilted and have no gap in the middle.

How to make a quiet book tutorial 42

Using the cutting mat and the rotary cutter make sure that the edges are matching and trim away any excess fabric. Also make sure that all 4 double pages end up the same size.

How to make a quiet book tutorial 43

This is how the 4 double pages look on one side:

How to make a quiet book tutorial 44

This is how the 4 double pages look on the other side. Note the gaps in the middle.

How to make a quiet book tutorial 45

Stitch around the 4 edges leaving 1/4 inch seam allowance. Trim the corners.

Using the gap in the middle turn the book inside out.

How to make a quiet book tutorial 46

Using a crochet needle or a pencil make sure that you get 4 nice corners before you press the double pages. Press with a hot steamy iron.

How to make a quiet book tutorial 49

Once the double pages are nicely pressed you need to close the gaps. Using a hand sewing needle close the gap by inserting the needle from the inside of the page and doing a blind stitch until the gap is completely closed.

How to make a quiet book tutorial 51

So at this stage this is how your double pages will look:

How to make a quiet book tutorial 53

And these are the pages plus the dolls all ready to be placed in the book :). Lets do that now!

How to make a quiet book tutorial 55

Place the book on your sewing table. Make sure that the book cover is facing down. Place the other double page with the pink tie dyed fabric facing up. In other words, the double pages that had the gap need to be touching each other and they are the inside pages of the quiet book.

With an embroidery thread of your choice (it can be a top stitching thread as well) we need to sew all the layers of the quiet book together. Thread a hand sewing needle with a double thread.

How to make a quiet book tutorial 56

Insert the needle through the middle of the book and come out to the middle pages.

How to make a quiet book tutorial 57

Insert the needle back again but this time put the needle through all layers of the book and come out through the book covers. Repeat this process three times. This will be the first book binding stitch. you need to make at least two of these so that the book holds together nicely.

A lot of parents like Montessori education and are wondering if a quiet book can count as a Montessori toy (or as they say it, material) or is Montessori aligned?

I’ll break down what are Montessori materials, what does it takes for a toy to be Montessori aligned, and is a Quiet book either of those.

If you like Montessori education and also quiet books, check out this article to see how you can make something like a quiet book Montessori aligned toy.

To Buy or to Make a Quiet Book?

A quiet book is an exceptional educational toy, and for your child to have it, there are only two options, really.

Either you buy it or create one yourself (unless you get it as a present).

What are some pros and cons of both options? What does it take to make it? What to consider when buying it? Those are just a few of the questions I’ll try to answer in this article.

If you think you’re not a “creative” type and believe you can’t do it, I’ll do my best to give you a morale boost and tell you simple ways anyone can make a quiet book .

To Sew or No-Sew a Quiet Book?

Should you create a quiet book with a quick and easy no-sewing method, or take some time and sew everything?

There are many benefits to using a no-sew method, but also quite a few warnings if you decide not to sew.

I always encourage sewing, as it makes a quiet book durable, and you generally don’t have to worry about something falling apart. But a no-sew quiet book can also be a reasonable and quick solution. Better to create one than not at all.

I wrote this article to help you decide on what technique to choose.

Here is what Stormy Daniels testified happened between her and Donald Trump

Donald Trump's attorneys have unsuccessfully pushed for a mistrial during the testimony of porn actor Stormy Daniels

NEW YORK -- Porn actor Stormy Daniels took the witness stand Tuesday in the hush money case against Donald Trump , who looked on as she detailed their alleged sexual encounter and the payment she got to keep it quiet.

Prosecutors allege Trump paid Daniels to keep quiet about the claims as he ran for president in 2016. Her testimony aired them very publicly as the presumptive Republican presidential nominee seeks to win the White House again.

Trump denies having sex with Daniels, and his lawyers unsuccessfully pushed for a mistrial midway through her testimony.

It's the biggest spectacle yet in the first criminal trial of a former American president, now in its third week of testimony in Manhattan.

Here are some takeaways from Daniels' testimony:

The case centers on a $130,000 payment to Daniels from Trump's then-lawyer, Michael Cohen, in the final weeks of Trump’s 2016 campaign. Prosecutors say it was part of a scheme to illegally influence the campaign by burying negative stories about him.

His lawyers have sought to show that Trump was trying to protect his reputation and family — not his campaign — by shielding them from embarrassing stories about his personal life.

Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, told jurors that she started exotic dancing in high school and appearing in adult films at age 23, eventually moving on to direct more than 150 films and winning a roster of porn industry awards.

Daniels testified she first met and chatted with Trump at a 2006 Lake Tahoe celebrity golf outing where her studio was a sponsor.

He referred to her as “the smart one” and asked her if she wanted to go to dinner, she said. Daniels testified that she accepted Trump’s invitation because she wanted to avoid dinner with her co-workers and thought it might help her career. Trump had his bodyguard get her number, she said.

When they met up later in his penthouse, she appreciated that he seemed interested in the business aspects of the industry rather than the “sexy stuff." He also suggested putting her on his TV show, “The Apprentice,” a possibility she hoped could help establish her as a writer and director.

She left to use the bathroom and was startled to find Trump in his underwear when she returned, she said. She didn’t feel physically or verbally threatened but realized that he was “bigger and blocking the way,” she testified.

“The next thing I know was: I was on the bed,” and they were having sex, Daniels recalled. The encounter was brief but left her “shaking,” she said. “I just wanted to leave,” she testified.

Daniels was asked if Trump ever told her to keep things between them confidential and said, “Absolutely not.” She said she learned in 2011 that a magazine had learned the story of their encounter and she agreed to do an interview for $15,000 to make money and “control the narrative.” The story never ran.

In 2016, when Trump was running for president, Daniels said she authorized her manager to shop the story around but did not initially receive interest from news outlets. She said that changed in October with the release of the “Access Hollywood” tape in which Trump bragged about grabbing women sexually without asking permission. She said she learned that Cohen wanted to buy her silence.

Midway through her testimony, Trump's lawyers moved for a mistrial.

Defense lawyer Todd Blanche argued that Daniels' testimony about the alleged encounter and other meetings with him had “nothing to do with this case,” and would unfairly prejudice the jury.

The judge rejected it, and he faulted defense attorneys for not raising more of their objections while she was testifying.

Before Daniels took the stand, Trump’s lawyers had tried to stop her from testifying about the encounter's details, saying it was irrelevant in “a case about books and records.”

Prosecutors countered that Daniels’ testimony gets at what Trump was trying to hide and they were “very mindful” not to draw too much graphic detail. Before Daniels took the stand, they told the judge the testimony would be “really basic,” and would not “involve any details of genitalia.”

While the judge didn’t side with Trump’s lawyers, he acknowledged that some details were excessive. The objections could potentially be used by Trump’s lawyers if he is convicted and they file an appeal.

Trump's lawyers tried to attack Daniels' credibility, suggesting she was motivated by money and that her account has shifted over the years.

“Am I correct that you hate President Trump?” Defense lawyer Susan Necheles asked Daniels at one point. Daniels acknowledged she did.

“And you want him to go to jail?” the lawyer asked.

“I want him to be held accountable,” Daniels said. Pressed again whether that meant going to jail, she said, “If he’s convicted.”

The defense pressed Daniels on the fact that she owes Trump hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal fees stemming from an unsuccessful defamation lawsuit and on a 2022 tweet in which she said she “will go to jail before I pay a penny.” Daniels dug in at times in the face of pointed questions, forcefully denying the idea that she had tried to extort Trump.

Trump whispered frequently to his attorney during Daniels’ testimony, and his expression seemed to be pained at one point as she recounted details about the dinner she says they shared. He shook his head and appeared to say something under his breath as Daniels testified that Trump told her he didn’t sleep in the same room as his wife.

At one point, the judge told defense lawyers during a sidebar conversation — out of earshot of the jury and the public — that he could hear Trump “cursing audibly" and see him shaking his head, according to a transcript of the proceedings.

“I am speaking to you here at the bench because I don’t want to embarrass him,” Judge Juan Merchan told Blanche, Trump's lawyer. Blanche assured the judge he would talk to his client.

“You need to speak to him. I won’t tolerate that,” the judge said.

On the way out of the courthouse, Trump called it “a very revealing day." He didn't address Daniels' testimony explicitly but claimed the prosecutors' case was “totally falling apart.”

Trump’s appearance in court Tuesday, like all other days he’s stuck in the courtroom, means he can’t be out on the campaign trail as he runs for president a third time. It’s a frequent source of his complaints, but Daniels' testimony in particular might underscore how much of a distraction the trial is from the business of running for president.

While Trump was stuck in a Manhattan courthouse away from voters and unable to speak for much of the day, his rival, Democratic President Joe Biden, was attending a Holocaust remembrance ceremony and condemning antisemitism.

It’s an issue Trump has sought to use against Biden in the campaign by seizing on the protests at college campuses over the Israel-Hamas war.

Whitehurst reported from Washington. Associated Press writers Michael Sisak, Jennifer Peltz, Jake Offenhartz and Alanna Durkin Richer contributed to this story.
