The first tool--the Office Repair wizard--is more limited in what it can do, but it's available to all users of Office 365 Home or Business. The second tool--the Office 365 Support and Recovery Assistant--is much like the old Office Diagnostics tool you may remember from Office 2007. It covers more problems and hooks into online support resources better, but unfortunately is only available to users of Office 365 Business.

Whether you're using Office 365 Home or Business, you can try to repair an Office 365 installation by re-running its Setup program from the Control Panel. It isn't as good at solving specific problems--especially with Outlook--as the troubleshooting tool that business owners can use, but it is good at helping to resolve installation problems and often for fixing individual Office programs that won't start or keep crashing on you. It can also help resolve issues that poorly-written add-ins can sometimes cause.

You can choose one of two options when you perform a repair:

  • Quick Repair . This type of repair goes pretty quickly, but it only tries to detect and replace any corrupt files in your Office installation--similarly to what the System File Checker tool does for Windows.
  • Online Repair . This type of repair actually uninstalls and reinstalls Office. It takes longer to run and requires an internet connection, but it performs a more complete repair job.

The online repair option is pretty good about keeping your preferences in place--and it won't affect any of your documents--but we recommend trying the quick repair first and then using the online repair if your problem isn't resolved.

Before you get started, go ahead and save any open Office documents and then close all your Office programs. When you're ready, click Start, type "Control Panel," and then hit Enter or click the result.

In the Control Panel window, click the "Uninstall a program" link.

In the Programs and Features window, select your Office 365 installation from the list and then click "Change" to open the repair wizard.

Select whether you want to run a quick or online repair and then click "Next." For this example, we're going to be running a quick repair, but the process is pretty much the same no matter which option you pick.

Click "Repair" to start the repair process.

The wizard will close any Office programs that are still open and will then begin scanning for and replacing corrupted files. It should only take a few minutes. When it's done, click "Close."

You can now test your Office apps to see if your problem has been fixed. If you're still having issues after running a quick repair, go ahead and try the more thorough online repair. It will take some time, since it has to uninstall Office and redownload the installation, but it should get you fixed up if the quick repair doesn't.

The Support and Recovery Assistant for Office 365 is a relatively new troubleshooting tool you can download from Microsoft. Right now, it's only available for users of Office 365 Business. Office 365 Home users can download and run it, but one of the last steps of the troubleshooter is to sign in with your business account. Still, if you are a business user, it can be a valuable tool.

While its primary focus is on Outlook issues right now, it can help also identify and resolve problems with installation and activation of Office 365. Plus, if it's like most Microsoft troubleshooters, you can expect it to add more functionality over time. For right now, though, it can help you with problems like:

  • Basic Outlook issues, such as when Outlook--for Windows or Mac--stops responding or receiving emails, won't remember your passwords, or cannot connect to shared mailboxes and calendars.
  • Syncing problems with Office 365 on your mobile device.
  • Trouble setting up Outlook on the web.
  • Difficulty with Exchange Online.

Start by downloading and installing the Support and Recovery Assistant for Office 365 . Run the program on the machine where you're experiencing the problem, accept the licensing terms, and you'll arrive at the main page where you can begin selecting the issue you're having. For this example, we're going to run through troubleshooting a startup problem with Outlook, but the basic process is the same no matter what problem you're having.

Select the issue, use the steps in the troubleshooter to help narrow down that issue, and then let the troubleshooter try to fix it. On this first screen, choose the basic area you're having difficulties and then click "Next."

On the next page, select the specific problem you're having and then click "Next."

The troubleshooter needs to run on the machine where you're having trouble, so tell it "Yes" and then click "Next."

At this point, you'll need to sign in with your Office 365 Business account to proceed. Just type in your credentials and click "Next."

The troubleshooter will attempt to locate and fix whatever problem you specified. The troubleshooter can fix most problems automatically. Occasionally, it may run into a problem that it needs you to take steps to fix, such as when Outlook needs to be updated.

If the troubleshooter is successful, you can go ahead and try your program again to see if it works. If the troubleshooter reports that it cannot fix your problem and has no suggestions for you to try yourself, it will ask whether it can record the steps you take while you reproduce the problem so that it can send those steps to Microsoft for review.

How to Fix the "Product Activation Failed" Error on Microsoft Office Apps for Windows

3. Defer Judgment of Ideas

If you encounter an idea that seems outlandish or unreasonable, a natural response would be to reject it. This instant judgment impedes creativity. Even if ideas seem implausible, they can play a huge part in ideation. It's important to permit the exploration of original ideas.

While judgment can be perceived as negative, it’s crucial to avoid accepting ideas too quickly. If you love an idea, don’t immediately pursue it. Give equal consideration to each proposal and build on different concepts instead of acting on them immediately.

4. Overcome Cognitive Fixedness

Cognitive fixedness is a state of mind that prevents you from recognizing a situation’s alternative solutions or interpretations instead of considering every situation through the lens of past experiences.

Although it's efficient in the short-term, cognitive fixedness interferes with creative thinking because it prevents you from approaching situations unbiased. It's important to be aware of this tendency so you can avoid it.

5. Balance Divergent and Convergent Thinking

One of the key principles of creative problem-solving is the balance of divergent and convergent thinking. Divergent thinking is the process of brainstorming multiple ideas without limitation; open-ended creativity is encouraged. It’s an effective tool for generating ideas, but not every idea can be explored. Divergent thinking eventually needs to be grounded in reality.

Convergent thinking, on the other hand, is the process of narrowing ideas down into a few options. While converging ideas too quickly stifles creativity, it’s an important step that bridges the gap between ideation and development. It's important to strike a healthy balance between both to allow for the ideation and exploration of creative ideas.

6. Use Creative Tools

Using creative tools is another way to foster innovation. Without a clear cause for a problem, such tools can help you avoid cognitive fixedness and abrupt decision-making. Here are several examples:

Problem Stories

Creating a problem story requires identifying undesired phenomena (UDP) and taking note of events that precede and result from them. The goal is to reframe the situations to visualize their cause and effect.

To start, identify a UDP. Then, discover what events led to it. Observe and ask questions of your consumer base to determine the UDP’s cause.

Next, identify why the UDP is a problem. What effect does the UDP have that necessitates changing the status quo? It's helpful to visualize each event in boxes adjacent to one another when answering such questions.

The problem story can be extended in either direction, as long as there are additional cause-and-effect relationships. Once complete, focus on breaking the chains connecting two subsequent events by disrupting the cause-and-effect relationship between them.

Alternate Worlds

The alternate worlds tool encourages you to consider how people from different backgrounds would approach similar situations. For instance, how would someone in hospitality versus manufacturing approach the same problem? This tool isn't intended to instantly solve problems but, rather, to encourage idea generation and creativity.

7. Use Positive Language

It's vital to maintain a positive mindset when problem-solving and avoid negative words that interfere with creativity. Positive language prevents quick judgments and overcomes cognitive fixedness. Instead of "no, but," use words like "yes, and."

Positive language makes others feel heard and valued rather than shut down. This practice doesn’t necessitate agreeing with every idea but instead approaching each from a positive perspective.

Using “yes, and” as a tool for further idea exploration is also effective. If someone presents an idea, build upon it using “yes, and.” What additional features could improve it? How could it benefit consumers beyond its intended purpose?

While it may not seem essential, this small adjustment can make a big difference in encouraging creativity.

8. Practice Design Thinking

Practicing design thinking can make you a more creative problem-solver. While commonly associated with the workplace, adopting a design thinking mentality can also improve your everyday life. Here are several ways you can practice design thinking:

  • Learn from others: There are many examples of design thinking in business . Review case studies to learn from others’ successes, research problems companies haven't addressed, and consider alternative solutions using the design thinking process.
  • Approach everyday problems with a design thinking mentality: One of the best ways to practice design thinking is to apply it to your daily life. Approach everyday problems using design thinking’s four-stage framework to uncover what solutions it yields.

Seven Steps for Effective Problem Solving in the Workplace

Problem-solving and decision-making. Ask anyone in the workplace if these activities are part of their day and they answer ‘Yes!’ But how many of us have had training in problem-solving?  We know it’s a critical element of our work, but do we know how to do it effectively?

People tend to do three things when faced with a problem: they get afraid or uncomfortable and wish it would go away; they feel that they have to come up with an answer and it has to be the right answer; and they look for someone to blame. Being faced with a problem becomes a problem. And that’s a problem because, in fact, there are always going to be problems!

There are two reasons why we tend to see a problem as a problem: it has to be solved and we’re not sure how to find the best solution, and there will probably be conflicts about what the best solution is. Most of us tend to be “conflict-averse”. We don’t feel comfortable dealing with conflict and we tend to have the feeling that something bad is going to happen. The goal of a good problem-solving process is to make us and our organization more “conflict-friendly” and “conflict-competent”.

There are two important things to remember about problems and conflicts: they happen all the time and they are opportunities to improve the system and the relationships. They are actually providing us with information that we can use to fix what needs fixing and do a better job. Looked at in this way, we can almost begin to welcome problems! (Well, almost.)

Because people are born problem solvers, the biggest challenge is to overcome the tendency to immediately come up with a solution. Let me say that again. The most common mistake in problem solving is trying to find a solution right away. That’s a mistake because it tries to put the solution at the beginning of the process, when what we need is a solution at the end of the process.

Here are seven-steps for an effective problem-solving process.

1. Identify the issues.

  • Be clear about what the problem is.
  • Remember that different people might have different views of what the issues are.
  • Separate the listing of issues from the identification of interests (that’s the next step!).

2. Understand everyone’s interests.

  • This is a critical step that is usually missing.
  • Interests are the needs that you want satisfied by any given solution. We often ignore our true interests as we become attached to one particular solution.
  • The best solution is the one that satisfies everyone’s interests.
  • This is the time for active listening. Put down your differences for awhile and listen to each other with the intention to understand.
  • Separate the naming of interests from the listing of solutions.

3. List the possible solutions (options)

  • This is the time to do some brainstorming. There may be lots of room for creativity.
  • Separate the listing of options from the evaluation of the options.

4. Evaluate the options.

  • What are the pluses and minuses? Honestly!
  • Separate the evaluation of options from the selection of options.

5. Select an option or options.

  • What’s the best option, in the balance?
  • Is there a way to “bundle” a number of options together for a more satisfactory solution?

6. Document the agreement(s).

  • Don’t rely on memory.
  • Writing it down will help you think through all the details and implications.

7. Agree on contingencies, monitoring, and evaluation.

  • Conditions may change. Make contingency agreements about foreseeable future circumstances (If-then!).
  • How will you monitor compliance and follow-through?
  • Create opportunities to evaluate the agreements and their implementation. (“Let’s try it this way for three months and then look at it.”)

Effective problem solving does take some time and attention more of the latter than the former. But less time and attention than is required by a problem not well solved. What it really takes is a willingness to slow down. A problem is like a curve in the road. Take it right and you’ll find yourself in good shape for the straightaway that follows. Take it too fast and you may not be in as good shape.

Working through this process is not always a strictly linear exercise. You may have to cycle back to an earlier step. For example, if you’re having trouble selecting an option, you may have to go back to thinking about the interests.

This process can be used in a large group, between two people, or by one person who is faced with a difficult decision. The more difficult and important the problem, the more helpful and necessary it is to use a disciplined process. If you’re just trying to decide where to go out for lunch, you probably don’t need to go through these seven steps!

Don’t worry if it feels a bit unfamiliar and uncomfortable at first. You’ll have lots of opportunities to practice!

That’s where the Step Method comes in.

By following a series of steps in a logical order, you can increase your chances of finding the right solution and successfully resolving the problem. In this blog, we’ll outline the Step Method and provide tips and best practices for each stage of the process. Whether you’re a seasoned problem-solver or just starting out, we hope this will be a valuable resource for you.

Stage I: Recognition is being aware and cognizant that a problem exists. This can also be something such as an administrative process you use that no longer works.

  • Identify the problem or issue.
  • Clearly state the problem or issue.
  • Gather as much background information as possible or facts to support the issue at hand.
  • List negative effects.
  • Assemble relevant information.
  • Write five to ten possible solutions.

  • Clearly state the problem in a way that is specific and measurable. This will help you and others understand the issue more clearly and come up with solutions that address the root cause of the problem.

Stage 2:  Identify the Solution by coming up with several options.

  • List the positive or negative outcomes of each possible solution.
  • Select the best one.
  • Brainstorm a list of possible solutions. Don’t worry about evaluating the solutions at this stage – just come up with as many ideas as possible.
  • Consider the positive and negative outcomes of each solution. This will help you narrow down your options and choose the best one.
  • Select the solution that seems to have the most potential for success and that addresses the root cause of the problem.

Stage 3: Implementation

  • Consider how you will present this information to those involved: communication style; format (verbal, written); timing.
  • Implement your idea.
  • Evaluate the outcome.
  • Adjust as necessary and try again.
  • If necessary, try a different solution.
  • Communicate the solution to those who need to know. Use a clear and concise communication style, and consider the best format (verbal, written, etc.) and timing for the message.
  • Implement the solution. This may involve taking specific actions, changing processes or systems, or communicating with others.
  • Evaluate the outcome. Check to see if the solution has been effective in solving the problem. If it hasn’t, consider adjusting the solution or trying a different one.

8 ways to resolve conflict in the workplace.

Where there are people, there is conflict. We each have our values, needs and habits, so it's easy to misunderstand or irritate one another – or worse, to fall into conflict.

Left unchecked, conflict can lead to bad decisions and outright disputes, bullying or harassment. Teamwork breaks down, morale drops, and projects grind to a halt. Organizations feel the hit with wasted talent, high absenteeism, and increased staff turnover.

But conflict can be resolved. What's more, it can bring issues to light, strengthen relationships, and spark innovation – so long as you don't try to ignore it!

In this article, we'll explore different types of conflict, what causes conflict, and how to reach a positive outcome when you find yourself in conflict with a co-worker. Conflict Resolution Definition

Generally, workplace conflicts fall into two categories:

  • Personality conflict or disagreements between individuals. These clashes are driven and perpetuated by emotions such as anger, stress and frustration.
  • Substantive conflict is tangible and task-related, like the decisions leaders make, the performance of a team member, or your company's direction.

If unaddressed, both can spiral into wider conflict between teams, departments or businesses. Conflict resolution can be defined as the process of identifying, addressing, and resolving disagreements or disputes among employees in a professional setting, thereby fostering a positive and productive work environment.

What Causes Conflict at Work?

Some of the most common causes of workplace conflict are:

  • Unclear responsibilities . Some team members may feel they do more work than others, or resent those who seem to have fewer responsibilities. Blame and frustration can build due to duplicated work or unfinished tasks.
  • Competition for resources . Time, money, materials, equipment, and skillsets are finite resources. Competition for them can lead to conflict.
  • Different interests . People may focus on personal or departmental goals over organizational ones. Or be held up and frustrated by others who they rely on to do their jobs effectively.

Five Conflict Resolution Strategies

When you find yourself in a conflict situation, these five strategies will help you to resolve disagreements quickly and effectively:

1. Raise the Issue Early

Keeping quiet only lets resentment fester. Equally, speaking with other people first can fuel rumor and misunderstanding.

So, whether you're battling over the thermostat or feel that you're being micromanaged, be direct and talk with the other party. However, if you're afraid of making that approach, or worry that it may make the problem worse, speak with your manager first, or your HR department if the other party is your manager.

Either way, be assertive (not aggressive) and speak openly. This will encourage others to do the same – and you can get to the root cause of a problem before it escalates.

2. Manage Your Emotions

Choose your timing when you talk to someone about the conflict. If you're angry, you may say something you'll regret and inflame the situation. Be careful to avoid playing the blame game .

So stay calm, collect yourself, and ask, "What is it I want to achieve here?", "What are the issues I'm having?" and "What is it that I would like to see?"

3. Show Empathy

When you talk to someone about a conflict, it's natural to want to state your own case, rather than hear out the other side. But when two people do this, the conversation goes in circles.

Instead, invite the other party to describe their position, ask how they think they might resolve the issue, and listen with empathy .

Putting yourself in the other person's shoes is an essential part of negotiation. This helps you to build mutual respect and understanding – and to achieve an outcome that satisfies both parties.

4. Practice Active Listening

To identify the source of the conflict you have to really listen. To listen actively:

  • Paraphrase the other party's points to show you're listening and really understand them.
  • Look out for non-verbal signals that contradict what they are saying, such as a hesitant tone behind positive words. Bring these out into the open sensitively to address them together.
  • Use appropriate body language , such as nodding your head, to show interest and to make it clear that you're following them.

5. Acknowledge Criticism

Some of the things the other person tells you may be difficult to hear. But remember that criticism or constructive feedback is about job behaviors and not you as a person.

So, keep an open mind and use criticism to help you to identify areas to improve, perform better next time, and grow.

Glasers' Three-Step Strategy for Conflict Resolution

Conflict management consultants Peter and Susan Glaser recommend a three-step strategy for resolving conflict, and it draws on many of the skills we've looked at above. You can hear the Glasers talking about their model in our exclusive interview with them. [1]

The steps for these conflict resolution skills are:

  • Prove that you understand their side.
  • Acknowledge that you are part of the problem.
  • Try again if the conversation didn't go well.

Let's try a training exercise and apply each step to a fictional conflict resolution scenario.

Conflict Resolution Training Example

Imagine that the heads of two departments are in conflict. Product Manager Sayid changed the price of a product without letting Marketing Manager Gayanne know. As a result, the marketing team sent out an email to customers with incorrect prices. They had to send out a follow-up email apologizing for the error, and make good on the price some customers paid for the product.

1. Prove That You Understand Their Side

Instead of blaming Sayid, Gayanne asks him how he came to make the decision. She uses her questioning and listening skills to get the information she needs and to show that she's truly hearing Sayid's response.

She discovers that Sayid was pressured by a major client to drop the price or risk losing a contract. She empathizes , saying, "Yes, I've had difficulties with that client before, too."

As Susan Glaser says, "Only when you believe that I understand you, will you be willing to try to understand my perspective." [2]

2. Acknowledge That You Are Part of the Problem

If you're in conflict with someone, it's unlikely you're free of all blame. So admit your part in it. This leads to mutual trust, a better understanding of one another, and makes it easier to find a solution.

In our scenario, Gayanne could say to Sayid, "I should have shared our marketing strategy and email send dates with you. I'll do that right away."

3. Try Again if the Conversation Doesn't Go Well

Despite the progress they've made, relations between the two managers remain frosty, so Sayid calls Gayanne the following week. He says, "I was thinking about our conversation, and I'd like to try again because I'm not happy with how it went. I've had time to take your points on board, and I'd like to talk about how we can work together better going forward."

Remember that you get more than one shot at resolving a conflict. Susan Glaser says, "There's a myth that if we have a bad conversation with someone it's over. In fact, 'do overs' are powerful." [3]

How to use Solver in Excel with examples

The tutorial explains how to add and where to find Solver in different Excel versions, from 2016 to 2003. Step-by-step examples show how to use Excel Solver to find optimal solutions for linear programming and other kinds of problems.

Everyone knows that Microsoft Excel contains a lot of useful functions and powerful tools that can save you hours of calculations. But did you know that it also has a tool that can help you find optimal solutions for decision problems?

In this tutorial, we are going to cover all essential aspects of the Excel Solver add-in and provide a step-by-step guide on how to use it most effectively.

What is Excel Solver?

Excel Solver belongs to a special set of commands often referred to as What-if Analysis Tools. It is primarily purposed for simulation and optimization of various business and engineering models.

The Excel Solver add-in is especially useful for solving linear programming problems, aka linear optimization problems, and therefore is sometimes called a linear programming solver . Apart from that, it can handle smooth nonlinear and non-smooth problems. Please see Excel Solver algorithms for more details.

How to add Solver to Excel

The Solver add-in is included with all versions of Microsoft Excel beginning with 2003, but it is not enabled by default.

To add Solver to your Excel, perform the following steps:

  • In Excel 2010 - Excel 365, click File > Options . In Excel 2007, click the Microsoft Office button, and then click Excel Options .

Open the Excel Options dialog to get to the Excel Add-ins list.

To get Solver on Excel 2003 , go to the Tools menu, and click Add-Ins . In the Add-Ins available list, check the Solver Add-in box, and click OK .

Now that you know where to find Solver in Excel, open a new worksheet and let's get started!

How to use Solver in Excel

Before running the Excel Solver add-in, formulate the model you want to solve in a worksheet. In this example, let's find a solution for the following simple optimization problem.

Problem . Supposing, you are the owner of a beauty salon and you are planning on providing a new service to your clients. For this, you need to buy a new equipment that costs $40,000, which should be paid by instalments within 12 months.

Goal : Calculate the minimal cost per service that will let you pay for the new equipment within the specified timeframe.

A simple optimization model to solve

And now, let's see how Excel Solver can find a solution for this problem.

1. Run Excel Solver

The Solver Parameters window will open where you have to set up the 3 primary components:

  • Objective cell

Variable cells

Constraints.

Exactly what does Excel Solver do with the above parameters? It finds the optimal value (maximum, minimum or specified) for the formula in the Objective cell by changing the values in the Variable cells, and subject to limitations in the Constraints cells.

The Objective cell ( Target cell in earlier Excel versions) is the cell containing a formula that represents the objective, or goal, of the problem. The objective can be to maximize, minimize, or achieve some target value.

Variable cells ( Changing cells or Adjustable cells in earlier versions) are cells that contain variable data that can be changed to achieve the objective. Excel Solver allows specifying up to 200 variable cells.

In this example, we have a couple of cells whose values can be changed:

  • Projected clients per month (B4) that should be less than or equal to 50; and
  • Cost per service (B5) that we want Excel Solver to calculate.

The Excel Solver Constrains are restrictions or limits of the possible solutions to the problem. To put it differently, constraints are the conditions that must be met.

To add a constraint(s), do the following:

  • Click the Add button right to the " Subject to the Constraints " box.

  • In the Constraint window, enter a constraint.
  • Click the Add button to add the constraint to the list.

  • Continue entering other constraints.
  • After you have entered the final constraint, click OK to return to the main Solver Parameters window.

Excel Solver allows specifying the following relationships between the referenced cell and the constraint.

  • Less than or equal to , equal to , and greater than or equal to . You set these relationships by selecting a cell in the Cell Reference box, choosing one of the following signs: <= , =, or >= , and then typing a number, cell reference / cell name, or formula in the Constraint box (please see the above screenshot).
  • Integer . If the referenced cell must be an integer, select int , and the word integer will appear in the Constraint box.
  • Different values . If each cell in the referenced range must contain a different value, select dif , and the word AllDifferent will appear in the Constraint box.
  • Binary . If you want to limit a referenced cell either to 0 or 1, select bin , and the word binary will appear in the Constraint box.

To edit or delete an existing constraint do the following:

  • In the Solver Parameters dialog box, click the constraint.
  • To modify the selected constraint, click Change and make the changes you want.
  • To delete the constraint, click the Delete button.

In this example, the constraints are:

  • B3=40000 - cost of the new equipment is $40,000.
  • B4<=50 - the number of projected patients per month in under 50.

3. Solve the problem

After you've configured all the parameters, click the Solve button at the bottom of the Solver Parameters window (see the screenshot above) and let the Excel Solver add-in find the optimal solution for your problem.

Depending on the model complexity, computer memory and processor speed, it may take a few seconds, a few minutes, or even a few hours.

The Solver Result window will close and the solution will appear on the worksheet right away.

The solution for the problem is found.

  • If the Excel Solver has been processing a certain problem for too long, you can interrupt the process by pressing the Esc key. Excel will recalculate the worksheet with the last values found for the Variable cells.
  • To get more details about the solved problem, click a report type in the Reports box, and then click OK . The report will be created on a new worksheet:

Below you will find two more examples of using the Excel Solver addin. First, we will find a solution for a well-known puzzle, and then solve a real-life linear programming problem.

Excel Solver example 1 (magic square)

I believe everyone is familiar with "magic square" puzzles where you have to put a set of numbers in a square so that all rows, columns and diagonals add up to a certain number.

For instance, do you know a solution for the 3x3 square containing numbers from 1 to 9 where each row, column and diagonal adds up to 15?

It's probably no big deal to solve this puzzle by trial and error, but I bet the Solver will find the solution faster. Our part of the job is to properly define the problem.

With all the formulas in place, run Solver and set up the following parameters:

  • Set Objective . In this example, we don't need to set any objective, so leave this box empty.
  • Variable Cells . We want to populate numbers in cells B2 to D4, so select the range B2:D4.
  • $B$2:$D$4 = AllDifferent - all of the Variable cells should contain different values.
  • $B$2:$D$4 = integer - all of the Variable cells should be integers.
  • $B$5:$D$5 = 15 - the sum of values in each column should equal 15.
  • $E$2:$E$4 = 15 - the sum of values in each row should equal 15.
  • $B$7:$B$8 = 15 - the sum of both diagonals should equal 15.

This is an example of a simple transportation optimization problem with a linear objective. More complex optimization models of this kind are used by many companies to save thousands of dollars each year.

Problem : You want to minimize the cost of shipping goods from 2 different warehouses to 4 different customers. Each warehouse has a limited supply and each customer has a certain demand.

Goal : Minimize the total shipping cost, not exceeding the quantity available at each warehouse, and meeting the demand of each customer.

Formulating the model

To define our linear programming problem for the Excel Solver, let's answer the 3 main questions:

  • What decisions are to be made? We want to calculate the optimal quantity of goods to deliver to each customer from each warehouse. These are Variable cells (B7:E8).
  • What are the constraints? The supplies available at each warehouse (I7:I8) cannot be exceeded, and the quantity ordered by each customer (B10:E10) should be delivered. These are Constrained cells .
  • What is the goal? The minimal total cost of shipping. And this is our Objective cell (C12).

To make our transportation optimization model easier to understand, create the following named ranges:

The last thing left for you to do is configure the Excel Solver parameters:

  • Objective: Shipping_cost set to Min
  • Variable cells: Products_shipped
  • Constraints: Total_received = Ordered and Total_shipped <= Available

How to save and load Excel Solver scenarios

When solving a certain model, you may want to save your Variable cell values as a scenario that you can view or re-use later.

For example, when calculating the minimal service cost in the very first example discussed in this tutorial, you may want to try different numbers of projected clients per month and see how that affects the service cost. At that, you may want to save the most probable scenario you've already calculated and restore it at any moment.

Saving an Excel Solver scenario boils down to selecting a range of cells to save the data in. Loading a Solver model is just a matter of providing Excel with the range of cells where your model is saved. The detailed steps follow below.

To save the Excel Solver scenario, perform the following steps:

  • Open the worksheet with the calculated model and run the Excel Solver.

  • Excel will save your current model, which may look something similar to this:

Loading the saved model

When you decide to restore the saved scenario, do the following:

  • In the Solver Parameters window, click the Load/Save button.

Select the range of cells containing the saved model and click Load.

  • This will open the main Excel Solver window with the parameters of the previously saved model. All you need to do is to click the Solve button to re-calculate it.

Excel Solver algorithms

When defining a problem for the Excel Solver, you can choose one of the following methods in the Select a Solving Method dropdown box:

  • GRG Nonlinear. Generalized Reduced Gradient Nonlinear algorithm is used for problems that are smooth nonlinear, i.e. in which at least one of the constraints is a smooth nonlinear function of the decision variables. More details can be found here .
  • LP Simplex . The Simplex LP Solving method is based the Simplex algorithm created by an American mathematical scientist George Dantzig. It is used for solving so called Linear Programming problems - mathematical models whose requirements are characterized by linear relationships, i.e. consist of a single objective represented by a linear equation that must be maximized or minimized.   • Evolutionary . It is used for non-smooth problems, which are the most difficult type of optimization problems to solve because some of the functions are non-smooth or even discontinuous, and therefore it's difficult to determine the direction in which a function is increasing or decreasing. Creating an efficient, comfortable, and collaborative office environment is crucial for any business. However, many workspaces face common design problems that hinder productivity and workforce satisfaction.

Lack of collaboration space

Open floor plans may seem to promote teamwork, but often the lack of intentional collaboration areas results in a crowded, disruptive environment. Employees need spaces suited for group discussions, brainstorming sessions, and informal meetings that don't disturb others' focused work.

Consider repurposing underutilised areas into small meeting rooms or huddle spaces. Install whiteboards, large screens, and video conferencing abilities to facilitate teamwork. Create booths, lounges, and open enclaves away from desks for quick gatherings. Modular furniture like wheeled tables allows you to reconfigure layouts as needed.

Providing a variety of collaboration settings avoids workspace congestion while enabling creativity and productivity.

Poor lighting and ventilation

Exposure to natural light and proper ventilation is proven to boost alertness, lower stress, and decrease sick days. Fluorescent overhead lighting and stale, stuffy air create an uninspiring workplace. Evaluate if your office layout design maximises daylight access through windows and skylights. Install daylight sensors and dimmers to balance illumination from overhead lights based on natural light levels.

If remodelling, consider adding more windows and replacing solid walls with glass partitions. Improve air quality and circulation through a HVAC system assessment and upgrades like humidification systems.

Strategically place air purifiers and plants that act as natural air filters. Ensure workspace areas have individual airflow controls. A bright, fresh indoor environment keeps employees energised and healthy.

Wasted or cramped space

Ineffective office space design results in crowded workspaces or vastly underutilised real estate. Completing a detailed space utilisation study of your current office allows you to identify issues. Daily occupancy tracking, space surveys, and employee interviews give key data points.

This analysis may show the need to downsize or confirm you've outgrown your footprint. Evaluate if departments with synergy are separated or if high-traffic zones disrupt focus. Leverage your findings to eliminate wasted space and rework layouts for improved adjacencies.

For a cramped office, consider bench seating, shared desks, and implementing a desk booking system to enable flexibility. A space optimisation strategy tailored to your workforce saves on real estate costs and drives engagement.

Inadequate privacy

While collaboration has increased in importance, individual focused work remains critical. Open floor plans often lack sufficient settings for private conversations and concentrated tasks. Employees experience distractions that impair productivity and may hesitate to make sensitive calls or conduct confidential meetings.

Create small, enclosed pods or phone booths interspersed throughout the office for individual needs. Designate quiet zones clearly separated from high-traffic areas for heads-down work.

Allow remote work for tasks requiring extreme focus. Manager offices double as private meeting areas when unoccupied. Having options for privacy empowers employees to work productively without constant disruptions.

Inconsistency with brand or culture

A disconnect between office space design and company brand or values screams lack of thoughtfulness. Employees glean unconscious cues from their workplace environment daily.

How can I contact Microsoft for help?

Comunity page is great.

However - it does not solve my problem and I think Microsoft should be liable for selling products that create problems.

I cannot open any Office apps.

I think I tried all suggestions from the formum - still nothing.

There is no doubt that, as you say, Microsoft takes responsibility for the products it sells and provides technical support to its users.

I have read the solutions mentioned in the thread you replied to earlier, which normally works well with some Office failures, but for some reason it did not work with your Office. This is a real inconvenience for you. We regret this.

Excel not responding, hangs, freezes or stops working

This article discusses troubleshooting steps that can help resolve the most common issues when you receive an Excel not responding error, Excel hangs or freezes when you launch it, or open an Excel workbook. These types of problems may occur for one or more of the reasons listed below.

Follow the solutions provided in this article in order. If you have previously tried one of these methods, and it did not help, please go to the next solution in the list.

Note:  If you are having problems opening your Excel files after upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10, see Errors opening Microsoft 365 files after upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10 .

Safe mode troubleshooting

When you run Excel in safe mode, it bypasses functionality and settings such as alternative startup location, changed toolbars, startup folders used by Excel, Excel add-ins, and most COM add-ins. While add-ins can enhance your experience, they can occasionally interfere, or conflict with Excel.

You can safe mode troubleshoot in one of two ways:

Use the Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant to automate safe mode troubleshooting

Manually perform safe mode troubleshooting yourself

Automate safe mode troubleshooting

The Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant fully automates the safe mode isolation process to let you know if the problem is due to add-ins, files in startup folders, or toolbar settings.

Important: 

The Assistant will, in most cases, modify the registry and move files from startup folders used by Excel. Before you run the Assistant, make sure that you back up the registry and all files in startup folders used by Excel so that you can restore the registry and backed-up files if a problem occurs.

Download and run the Assistant

If you use the Assistant and it doesn't resolve your issue, continue with the steps in the Install the latest updates section of this article.

What changes can be made when automating safe mode troubleshooting?

The Excel Crash Troubleshooter scenario automates safe mode troubleshooting which includes the following:

Starting Excel in safe mode

Disabling COM add-ins

Disabling Excel add-ins

Moving files from startup folders used by Excel

Renaming custom toolbar files (.xlb)

Depending on what’s found by the scenario on your device, some of these troubleshooting steps may require you to manually reset your add-in configuration and move files back into startup folders. Please use the following information, as needed, to determine changes that may have been made by the scenario.

COM add-ins and Excel add-ins

If the scenario disables COM add-ins or Excel add-ins:

The \Addin folder is renamed to \AddinsRenamedBySaRA under the following registry keys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Excel

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\ClickToRun\REGISTRY\MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\Excel

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Office\ClickToRun\REGISTRY\MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\Excel

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Excel

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWAR\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Office\Excel\

Note:  You may not find \Addins or \AddinsRenamedBySaRA in your registry under the above keys. This is just a comprehensive list of what may be found in the registry.

Any REG_SZ value that is either “OPEN” or  begins with “OPEN” (e.g. OPEN1) has “RenamedBySaRA” prepended to the name. For example, “OPEN” is renamed to “RenamedBySaRAOPEN” HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Excel\Options

A folder called ExcelAddinRegistryDataBySaRA is created on your Windows Desktop.

A file called AddinRegistryDataExportedBySaRA.reg is created in the ExcelAddinRegistryDataBySaRA folder. The AddinRegistryDataExportedBySaRA.reg file contains a backup copy of the above registry keys as they existed prior to running the scenario.

Files in startup folders

If the scenario moves files from startup folders used by Excel:

Files found in the following folders are moved out of these folders:

64-bit Office C2R: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office1x\XLSTART

32-bit Office C2R: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Office1x\XLSTART

64-bit Office MSI: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office1x\XLSTART

32-bit Office MSI: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office1x\XLSTART

C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 15\root\Office 15\XLSTART

Note:  You may not have the above folders. This is just a comprehensive list of what may be found by the scenario.

Files found in the folder specified by the following registry data:

Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\1x.0\Excel\Options

Note:  In this subkey, 1x.0 represents the program version number. 16.0 will appear for versions of Excel 2016 and higher while 15.0 will appear for Excel 2013.

Name: AltStartup

Type: REG_EXPAND_SZ

Data: Folder path

Note:  You may not have the above registry data. This is just a comprehensive list of what may be found by the scenario.

The files moved out of the above folders are moved into a folder called ExcelStartupFilesFoundBySaRA that's created on your Windows Desktop.

A file called ExcelStartupFolderFiles.log is created in the ExcelStartupFilesCopiedBySaRA folder. The ExcelStartupFolderFiles.log file contains a list of all the files that were moved and their original file location.

Custom toolbar files (.xlb)

If the scenario finds a custom toolbar file:

Files with a .xlb extension that are in the following folder are renamed to include a .renamed file extension: %AppData%\Microsoft\Excel

Manually perform safe mode troubleshooting

If you didn't use the Assistant, manually open Excel in safe mode. Do one of the following:

If you are on Windows 11 or Windows 10, choose Start > All apps > Windows System > Run . Type Excel /safe in the Run box, and then click OK .

If you are on Windows 8 or Windows 8.1, click Run in the Apps menu, type Excel /safe in the Run box, and then click OK .

If Excel starts in safe mode, continue with the steps in the COM Add-ins section of this article.

If Excel does not start in safe mode, continue with the Install the latest updates section of this article.

COM add-ins

Use the following steps to determine if a COM add-in is causing the problem:

Click File > Options > Add-ins .

Select COM Add-ins, and click Go .

Clear all the check boxes in the list, and click OK .

Close and restart Excel in normal mode (not in safe mode).

If the issue does not occur when you restart Excel in normal mode, start enabling your add-ins one at a time until it does. This will allow you to figure out which add-in is causing the problem. Be sure to restart Excel each time you enable an add-in.

If disabling COM add-ins did not resolve your issue, see if the issue is due to an  Excel add-in .

Excel add-ins

Follow the steps in this section carefully. Serious problems may occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Make sure to back up the registry before you modify it. Make sure that you know how to restore the registry if a problem occurs.

For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, see  How to back up and restore the registry in Windows ..

Start Registry editor. To do this, press the Windows key + R to open a Run dialog box. Type regedit.exe and then press OK .

Locate and then select the following registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\<1x.0>\Excel\Options

Note:  In this subkey, <1x.0> represents the program version number. 16.0 will appear for versions Excel 2016 and higher while 15.0 will appear for Excel 2013.

In the Name column, look for any REG_SZ value equal to OPEN. If you don't find a REG_SZ value whose name is OPEN, continue with the Investigate possible issues with files in Startup folders section.

Right-click OPEN, and then select Rename .

Rename OPEN to RenamedOPEN, and press Enter.

Repeat steps 4 and 5 by adding "Renamed" to the beginning of any REG_SZ value that starts with OPEN. For example, rename OPEN1 to RenamedOPEN1.

Start Excel in normal mode.

If the issue does not occur when you restart Excel in normal mode, start re-enabling your Excel add-ins one-by-one by removing "Renamed" from the name. You'll be able to identify the add-in that's causing the problem. Remember to restart Excel each time you re-enable an add-in in the registry.

If disabling COM add-ins and Excel add-ins did not resolve your issue, continue to the Investigate possible issues with files in Startup folders section.

Investigate possible issues with files in Startup folders

When you start Excel, it opens any workbooks found in the XLStart folder, or an alternate startup folder in addition to the XLStart folder. Try starting Excel without opening workbooks in the XLStart folder or alternate startup folder.

Workbooks in the XLStart folder

Any workbook, template, or workspace file that you place in the XLStart folder is automatically opened when you start Excel. You can move files out of this folder and open Excel to test and identify if a specific workbook is causing the problem. To find the path of the XLStart folder and move workbooks out of it, do the following:

Click File > Options .

Click Trust Center , and then under Microsoft Office Excel Trust Center , click Trust Center Settings .

Click Trusted Locations , and then note the path to the XLStart folder in the list of trusted locations.

Move any files found in this folder to another folder location, and then start Excel in normal mode.

If the issue doesn't occur when you restart Excel in normal mode, start moving workbooks you moved in step 4 one by one back into the XLStart folder, restarting Excel in normal mode each time. If there's a problem with one of the workbooks in the XLStart folder, this should identify the workbook.

If moving workbooks out of the XLStart folder did not resolve your issue, check workbooks in an alternate startup folder.

Workbooks in an alternate startup folder

Any workbook, template, or workspace file that you place in an alternate startup folder is automatically opened when you start Excel. Because Excel will try to open every file in the alternate startup folder, make sure that only files that Excel can open are in this folder.

Try starting Excel without opening workbooks in this folder:

Click File > Options > Advanced .

Under General , in the At Startup, open all files in box, note the path of the folder configured as the alternate startup folder.

If the issue does not occur, start moving any workbook you moved in step 3 back into the alternate startup folder one-by-one, restarting Excel in normal mode each time. You'll be able to identify the workbook that's causing the problem.

If moving files out of the XLStart and alternate startup folder did not resolve your issue, continue to the next section.

Install the latest updates

You might need to set Windows Update to automatically download and install recommended updates. Installing any important recommendation, and optimal updates can often correct problems by replacing out-of-date files and fixing vulnerabilities. To install the latest updates, follow the steps in this article: Update Microsoft 365 and your computer .

If installing the latest updates did not resolve your issue, continue on to the next item on this list.

Check to make sure Excel is not in use by another process

If Excel is in use by another process, this information will be displayed in the status bar at the bottom of the Excel window. If you try to perform other actions while Excel is in use, Excel may not respond. Let the task in process finish its job before attempting other actions.

If Excel is not in use by another process, continue on to the next item on the list.

Investigate Excel file details and contents

Excel files can exist on the computer for a long time. They are upgraded from version to version, and frequently travel from one user to another user. Frequently, a user inherits an Excel file but doesn't know what is included in the file. The following things can cause performance or crashing issues:

Formulas referencing entire columns.

Array formulas referencing an uneven number of elements in the arguments.

Hundreds, or perhaps thousands of hidden or 0 height and width objects.

Excessive styles caused by frequent copying and pasting between workbook.

Excessive, and invalid defined names.

If these steps do not resolve your issue, continue on to the next item on the list.

Check whether your file is being generated by a third party

Sometimes Excel files are generated by a third-party application. In this case, the files may be generated incorrectly, and some features may not work properly when you open the files in Excel. If this occurs, test the features in new files outside the third-party application. If the features work correctly, you should make sure that the third party is aware of the issue. If your issue is not resolved after you test it outside the third-party application, continue on to the next item on the list.

Perform a selective startup to determine whether a program, process, or service conflicts with Excel

When you start Windows, several applications and services start automatically, and then run in the background. These applications and services can interfere with other software on your PC. Performing a selective startup (also known as a "clean boot") can help you identify problems with conflicting applications. To perform a selective startup, choose one of the following links depending on your version of Windows, then follow the steps in the article:

Windows 10, Windows 7, Windows 8:  Run Selective Startup using System Configuration Windows Vista:  Run Selective Startup using System Configuration Windows XP:  How to create and configure user accounts in Windows XP

Selective startup is used to help identify the offending process, service, or application that conflicts with Excel. If your issue is not resolved after you re-create the profile, continue on to the next item on the list.

Repair your Microsoft 365 programs

Repairing your Microsoft 365 programs can resolve issues with Excel not responding, hanging or freezing. For instructions on doing this, see: Repair a Microsoft 365 application .

If repairing your Microsoft 365 programs did not resolve your issue, continue on to the next item on the list.

Check to see if your antivirus software is up-to-date or conflicting with Excel

If your antivirus software is not up-to-date, Excel may not function properly.

Check whether your antivirus software is up-to-date:

To keep up with new viruses that are created, antivirus software vendors periodically provide updates that you can download from the Internet. Download the latest updates by visiting your antivirus software vendor’s website.

Check whether your antivirus software is conflicting with Excel:

If your antivirus software includes integration with Excel you may experience performance issues. In this case, you can disable all Excel integration within the antivirus software. Or, you can disable any antivirus software add-ins that are installed in Excel.

Important:  Changing your antivirus settings may make your PC vulnerable to viral, fraudulent or malicious attacks. Microsoft does not recommend that you attempt to change your antivirus settings. Use this workaround at your own risk.

You may have to contact your antivirus software vendor to determine how to configure your software to exclude any integration with Excel or to exclude scanning in Excel.

Advanced troubleshooting

If the methods that were mentioned earlier did not resolve your issue, the issue could be either file specific, or environmental. The following section describes how to troubleshoot additional issue that can cause Excel to hang, or crash. 

Environmental factors

Environmental factors are just as important as file contents, and add-ins when you are troubleshooting crashes. You can help determine the cause of your issue by taking the following actions:

Follow basic troubleshooting steps.

Test files in the cleanest possible environment.

The following sections describe some areas that are worth investigating.

Where the file is stored

Moving the file locally will help determine whether there is something wrong with the file, or with where the file is saved. Several issues can arise when you save an Excel file over a network or to a web server. It is a good idea to save the file locally. This should be done in the following scenarios:  

• Redirected "My Documents" folder to server location • Offline files • Opening files from a Webfolder or SharePoint • Remote Desktop/Citrix • Network appliances • Virtualized environment. Printers and video drivers

When you start Excel, it examines the default printer and video drivers that will display your Excel workbooks. Excel is printer-intensive, and it will run slower when Excel files are saved in Page Break Preview view. Testing a file by using different printers such as the Microsoft XPS Document Writer printer driver, or the VGA video driver will determine whether the problem is with a specific printer or video driver.

Mayor Eric Adams looks to Rome to solve New York City's migrant problems

I t is no secret that New York City has been dealing with a critical influx of migrants , and Mayor Eric Adams is now looking to a city 4,200 miles away for a solution. Adams recently traveled to Rome and met with Italian leaders on ways to solve New York's migrant crisis. The three-day trip, which took place in mid-May, included meetings with Pope Francis and Italian leaders from other religions, as well as Roman city officials. 

Beyond meetings, Adams also visited facilities set up by Rome to house migrants and asylum seekers. He was impressed by "how fast they're able to cycle the migrants and asylum seekers out of the welcome center," Adams said in a press briefing , noting that within two months, Roman officials "target to get folks into working trades, teaching them basic Italian and moving them forward through the system." 

The mayor said that he would take a number of ideas he found in the Italian capital and work to implement them in the City that Never Sleeps. But what specific takeaways from Rome can Adams use in New York City? 

What did Adams do in Rome? 

Beyond a meeting with the pope, as well as other Christian and Jewish leaders, Adams also "[attended] the World Meeting on Human Fraternity, where he discussed with world leaders city and international issues," said Spectrum News NY1 . While mayors of American cities often travel abroad, Adams reportedly used the visit to specifically highlight problems within New York. 

While the migrant crisis was his most pressing issue, Adams also made the most of his time viewing ways in which New York's infrastructure could be improved — the Roman way. This included a trip to Rome's famed Colosseum and nearby metro station, where he found that Rome is "using advanced technology" to create improved subway system tunnels "that could be helpful in New York," said Spectrum. Adams' most notable political sit-down was likely a meeting with his counterpart in Rome, Mayor Roberto Gualtieri, where the pair discussed asylum issues.  

What ideas from Rome could Adams implement in New York City?   

The main takeaway Adams seemed to acquire was that migrants who arrive in Rome "from countries including Syria and Sudan are processed, take Italian lessons and receive health care before being sent out for job opportunities," said The New York Times . Adams "said he wanted help from the Biden administration to develop something similar in New York," and has "called on the federal government to expedite work permits and relocation assistance for migrants." This has not been the first time that Adams has appealed to the White House for help, as he has previously admitted that the migrant overflow in New York City has reached a boiling point . But he seemed to find a shining light in Rome. 

"What really jumped off at me and my conversation with the mayor is how quick they are able to work," Adams said to reporters, per Politico . As a result of being taught the country's language, migrants to Italy "are allowed to work within a short period of time, anywhere from two months. You are able to really be a part of the society," Adams said. 

While Italy has had its own struggles with migrant influxes , the "idea is full integration," Claudio Betti, the assistant to the president of the Community of Sant'Egidio, a group helping to organize migrants in Italy, said to the Times. Betti "[believes] that his organization could help inspire New York as the city confronts the challenges posed by the migrant crisis." 

There are also "underused sites in economically deprived areas like East New York in Brooklyn that could be rebuilt with a focus on arts and culture," but that could also be used to build thriving migrant communities, said the Times . This includes "places in the city that we can actually renovate and change that entire space to become a place where people come together," said Adams. 

Even as Adams looks for solutions overseas, the migrant issue in New York City does not appear to be dissipating. Since last spring, the city "has taken in more than 175,000 migrants," and "immigration remains a major political issue ahead of the 2024 presidential election," Newsweek said.

Facility for Rare Isotope Beams

At michigan state university, international research team uses wavefunction matching to solve quantum many-body problems, new approach makes calculations with realistic interactions possible.

FRIB researchers are part of an international research team solving challenging computational problems in quantum physics using a new method called wavefunction matching. The new approach has applications to fields such as nuclear physics, where it is enabling theoretical calculations of atomic nuclei that were previously not possible. The details are published in Nature (“Wavefunction matching for solving quantum many-body problems”) .

Ab initio methods and their computational challenges

An ab initio method describes a complex system by starting from a description of its elementary components and their interactions. For the case of nuclear physics, the elementary components are protons and neutrons. Some key questions that ab initio calculations can help address are the binding energies and properties of atomic nuclei not yet observed and linking nuclear structure to the underlying interactions among protons and neutrons.

Yet, some ab initio methods struggle to produce reliable calculations for systems with complex interactions. One such method is quantum Monte Carlo simulations. In quantum Monte Carlo simulations, quantities are computed using random or stochastic processes. While quantum Monte Carlo simulations can be efficient and powerful, they have a significant weakness: the sign problem. The sign problem develops when positive and negative weight contributions cancel each other out. This cancellation results in inaccurate final predictions. It is often the case that quantum Monte Carlo simulations can be performed for an approximate or simplified interaction, but the corresponding simulations for realistic interactions produce severe sign problems and are therefore not possible.

Using ‘plastic surgery’ to make calculations possible

The new wavefunction-matching approach is designed to solve such computational problems. The research team—from Gaziantep Islam Science and Technology University in Turkey; University of Bonn, Ruhr University Bochum, and Forschungszentrum JĂźlich in Germany; Institute for Basic Science in South Korea; South China Normal University, Sun Yat-Sen University, and Graduate School of China Academy of Engineering Physics in China; Tbilisi State University in Georgia; CEA Paris-Saclay and UniversitĂŠ Paris-Saclay in France; and Mississippi State University and the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) at Michigan State University (MSU)—includes  Dean Lee , professor of physics at FRIB and in MSU’s Department of Physics and Astronomy and head of the Theoretical Nuclear Science department at FRIB, and  Yuan-Zhuo Ma , postdoctoral research associate at FRIB.

“We are often faced with the situation that we can perform calculations using a simple approximate interaction, but realistic high-fidelity interactions cause severe computational problems,” said Lee. “Wavefunction matching solves this problem by doing plastic surgery. It removes the short-distance part of the high-fidelity interaction, and replaces it with the short-distance part of an easily computable interaction.”

This transformation is done in a way that preserves all of the important properties of the original realistic interaction. Since the new wavefunctions look similar to that of the easily computable interaction, researchers can now perform calculations using the easily computable interaction and apply a standard procedure for handling small corrections called perturbation theory.  A team effort

The research team applied this new method to lattice quantum Monte Carlo simulations for light nuclei, medium-mass nuclei, neutron matter, and nuclear matter. Using precise ab initio calculations, the results closely matched real-world data on nuclear properties such as size, structure, and binding energies. Calculations that were once impossible due to the sign problem can now be performed using wavefunction matching.

“It is a fantastic project and an excellent opportunity to work with the brightest nuclear scientist s in FRIB and around the globe,” said Ma. “As a theorist , I'm also very excited about programming and conducting research on the world's most powerful exascale supercomputers, such as Frontier , which allows us to implement wavefunction matching to explore the mysteries of nuclear physics.”

While the research team focused solely on quantum Monte Carlo simulations, wavefunction matching should be useful for many different ab initio approaches, including both classical and  quantum computing calculations. The researchers at FRIB worked with collaborators at institutions in China, France, Germany, South Korea, Turkey, and United States.

“The work is the culmination of effort over many years to handle the computational problems associated with realistic high-fidelity nuclear interactions,” said Lee. “It is very satisfying to see that the computational problems are cleanly resolved with this new approach. We are grateful to all of the collaboration members who contributed to this project, in particular, the lead author, Serdar Elhatisari.”
