Liters, cc’s and — my favorite — cubic inches are all terms you’ll hear when folks talk about engines. While these terms are all based on different increments of measurement, they’re all used to describe one thing: an engine’s displacement.

Engine displacement is a big deal in the automotive and powersports industries. Not only does it give us an idea of what kind of power an engine is capable of, but it’s a better ego booster than anything else. Let’s face it. Bigger is always better, right? Maybe. Maybe not. It depends. Stupid turbochargers .

The fact of the matter is that engine displacement is just a measurement and can ultimately mean very little about true performance. Understanding that, how it works, and why it still matters is another thing. What Is Engine Displacement?

An engine is essentially an air pump. The design relies on the ability to displace a certain amount of air in an effort to combine it with fuel, ignite, and produce power, but it’s moving air nonetheless. Terms like 250 cc (cubic centimeters), 5.7 liters, or 426 cubic inches describe how much air an engine is capable of displacing. They’re just different methods of describing the same thing: displacement.

If you’re familiar with engine cycles , you know that engines displace air by means of a crankshaft-driven piston. It draws air in on the intake stroke and pushes it out on the exhaust stroke. The area of the pistons, how far they travel in the cylinder, and the number of cylinders all come together to tell us how much air the engine is capable of displacing.

Ready for some math? I know, I know, I’m sorry, but to find the displacement of any engine, you can use the following formula:

π x (radius)2 x stroke x number of cylinders

Let’s take a Chevrolet 350 V-8, for example. This engine has a total of eight cylinders, each with a bore of 4 inches and a stroke of 3.48 inches. So, when we plug that into our displacement formula, it should look like this:

π x (2)2 x 3.48 x 8 = 349.85.

That 349.85 is rounded up to give us the displacement of 350 cubic inches, which can be converted to 5.7 liters or 5,700 cc.

Is There Really No Replacement for Displacement?

Increasing engine displacement is a great way to improve power potential. If an engine can move more air, it can burn more fuel and make more power. As wonderful as that sounds, relying solely on the size of an engine can cripple your efforts. By looking at history, we can see just how true that is.

Take the Fiat S76, for example. Dubbed the Beast of Turin, this car features a titanic 28.4-liter engine that shook the world when it first arrived on the scene in 1910. While I have nothing but respect for the footprint it left in history, there’s no arguing that the roughly 300 horsepower it produced is nothing short of disappointing by today’s standards. Heck, the 2021 Kia Stinger can turn out 300 horsepower with a 2.5-liter engine.

To illustrate this point, we’ll take a look at America’s sweetheart, the Chevy 350 V-8. In 1970, at the height of the horsepower wars, this engine pumped out 300 horsepower. Fast forward to the mid-1980s, when emissions regulations and fuel-efficiency standards were a top priority, that generation of Chevy 350s required folks to work hard just to turn out a wimpy 175 horsepower.

How could something like this happen? Well, not to knock the engineers trying to save the planet, but the camshafts and cylinder heads they used snuffed out the power potential of once-mighty platforms. Compression ratios were also typically lower, another major offender in power deficits.

Ultimately, there’s more to consider than just how much air can potentially flow through an engine. Just because an engine can move a ton of air doesn’t mean it will. Nor does it mean that it’s achieving an efficient burn to drive the pistons through the bores with any kind of force behind them. A proper camshaft, cylinder-head design, and compression ratio are just a few bits that need to be in order for an engine to maximize its displacement.

How Can I Increase My Engine’s Displacement?

Even though there's a long list of big displacement blunders, there's no denying that being able to move more air and fuel means you can make more power. That's why many people make modifications that effectively increase the displacement of an engine.

Overboring the cylinders and increasing the engine's stroke are the two primary methods of achieving greater displacement. Boring out an engine involves using special machinery to widen the bores. Though it does increase the size of the bores, it has a minimal effect on displacement as a whole. For example, you can bore the cylinders of a Chevy 350 .030 inches over, which takes your bore size up to 4.030 and an overall engine displacement of 355 cubic inches. Those five extra cubic inches are more real estate to work with, but it won't have a dramatic impact on power output.

Increasing stroke, on the other hand, has more of a profound effect. Say you take that same Chevy 350, but you move to a longer, 3.75-inch stroke rather than expanding the bore. That combination gives you an overall displacement of 377 cubic inches. And if you pair both mods together, you've reached the 383-cubic-inch stroker everyone's been raving about since the beginning of time. ( Ed. Note: They’re great, and you should build one or drive one, if possible. )

Many engines can be coupled with stroker kits, but there's a little more to it than simply adding bigger pistons and a crankshaft. How the increase in stroke impacts the position of the piston, whether or not there's enough clearance for the bigger parts, and if the application can even accept them are all things to be concerned with, too. In short, a lot of homework goes into increasing engine displacement without pre-made kits.

What Else Can I Do To Make More Power?

We did mention that better heads and a cam and boosting the compression ratio are some ways to improve engine power. This is true for the most part. However, that doesn’t mean they’re the proper modifications for your goal and the application you have to work with.

Having a goal is absolutely critical. When you set a goal, you put yourself in the headspace to dive in and find out what’s keeping it from making the power you want it to. That may lead to you swapping out the cams, doing cylinder-head work, and dealing with a lousy compression ratio, but it ultimately depends on your situation.

And what about power adders? We certainly can’t leave superchargers and turbochargers out of the mix. Either of these modifications works to ensure an engine is working at peak volumetric efficiency. In other words, they make sure a 350-cubic-inch engine is displacing 350 cubic inches of air or more, with no regard for environmental factors that prevent it from doing so. Believe it or not, just making sure the engine is at 100 percent VE will make a major difference, which is why boost is favored by many.

Displacement Terms You Should Know

Education is always a good thing. Here are a few terms you should know regarding engine displacement. 

The diameter of an engine’s cylinder. When calculating the displacement of an engine, it’s important to note that you are looking for the area of the bore, not just the diameter.

Stroke refers to the distance the piston travels in the cylinder and should not be confused with stroke as used to describe a phase of an engine cycle. If an engine has a stroke of 3.48 inches, it means the piston travels down or up for a total of 3.48 inches during each phase.

The cylindrical component that travels up and down in an engine cylinder. As simple as it appears, the piston is responsible for several functions. In the case of an internal-combustion engine, the piston creates a vacuum to draw in air, compresses the mixture, transfers the energy created by ignition to the crankshaft, and presses exhaust gases out.

A shaft with offset journals that are used to aid the piston through its cycles. The journals of the crankshaft are offset from its centerline to create the reciprocating motion of the piston in the bore.

Q: How does engine displacement affect performance?

A: Engine displacement means an engine can move more air and fuel, giving it the potential to make more power. Whether or not it does make more power depends on a combination of the internal parts and the engine’s size.

Q: Which is better, a short stroke or long stroke?

A: That depends on what you’re trying to achieve. Longer strokes generally create peak torque much sooner, while shorter stroke engines can rev higher and more quickly. Also, because a longer stroke translates to bigger displacement, you might believe it makes more power. However, a shorter stroke can be far more favorable when paired with bigger pistons and better valvetrains when chasing peak power.

Unlike displacement, calculating compression ratio can be a complicated endeavor. Of course, piston dish or dome, combustion chamber volume, and chamber volume are all things to consider. You also can’t rule out block deck height, rod length, top ring position, piston to deck clearance, or even the head gasket’s dimensions.

Q: How do I know my bore size?

A: A quick internet search should get you in the ballpark. But you should also look at the block’s casting numbers for any indicators of an overbore, something common on older engines. To be absolutely sure, your best bet is to tear down the engine and take a measurement with a telescoping bore gauge .

Q: What’s the most common displacement for cars?

A: In today’s day and age, the average displacement for car engines is 2.0 liters. That sounds small, but don’t be fooled. Modern engines maximize efficiency and produce more power than most of yesterday’s factory V-8s.

An internal-combustion engine’s displacement is the combined volume of air moved — or displaced — by the pistons in its cylinders. There was a time when automotive bragging rights were measured in cubic inches of displacement — the bigger the engine, the bigger the explosions it could create, and the more power it made. But there’s more to the story now, thanks to the proliferation of turbochargers , superchargers, and electric assistance. Here we explain how to find the displacement of an engine and how to interpret that number once you have it.

How to Calculate Engine Displacement

To determine the displacement of an engine, you’ll need a couple of key measurements and a quick geometry refresher (or you can skip the math and simply plug numbers into one of many ).

Each cylinder of an engine is, as the name implies, cylindrical. As you might recall from high school, the formula to determine the volume of a cylinder is pi (rounded to 3.14) multiplied the radius squared times height.

In engine-speak, the height of the cylinder is known as the stroke. That’s the distance the piston travels up or down the cylinder. The radius is equal to half of the cylinder’s bore, which describes the diameter of the hole drilled, or bored, into the engine block to accept a piston. These dimensions are the same for each cylinder in an engine. To get the total displacement then, multiply the volume of one cylinder by the number of cylinders the engine has.

Back in the 1960s and ’70s, U.S. automakers talked about engine size in cubic inches, often advertising it directly on the vehicle in the form of badges or even as part of the model name as with the Ford Mustang Boss 302 and 429. Today’s preferred automotive displacement units are expressed as liters or cubic centimeters.

For example, a four-cylinder might have a bore of 8.25 cm and a stroke of 9.28 cm. Plugging those numbers into our volume equation gives us a displacement of 1,984 cubic centimeters, which rounds up to 2.0 liters.

Does Engine Displacement Matter?

When vehicles were simpler — before hybridization and forced induction became so popular — displacement gave you a pretty good idea of how much power an engine made relative to another. An increase in size brought a roughly proportional increase in output, but that’s not necessarily the case today.

In modern cars, engine displacement is less of a clue to a powertrain’s output. Automakers are now getting more out of less, downsizing engines and augmenting them with power boosters such as turbochargers, superchargers, and electric motors. As a result, the engine is just one part of the performance equation. Take the 2023 and 2021 Chevrolet Silverado as an example: the full-size truck recently replaced its standard V6 with a turbocharged four-cylinder. With the aid of a turbocharger, the 2023 truck’s 2.7-liter four-cylinder example can make as much as 310 hp and 348 lb.-ft. of torque, while the 4.3-liter V6 found in the base 2021 Silverado only made 285 hp and 305 lb.-ft. of torque. In the case of hybrids, the addition of electric motors adds a variable that’s completely independent from engine displacement.

So yes, displacement does matter to the engine, but it probably matters very little to you. When shopping for a vehicle, you should focus on a vehicle’s output — horsepower and torque — more than cylinder count and engine size.

What Is Engine Displacement, And Why Does It Matter?

With diamonds, bigger is not always better. Often it is about color, clarity, and cut. Similarly with engines, bigger doesn't necessarily mean better. While most people think that big-sized engines are always better, it is not necessarily correct. Recently we have seen smaller modern engines with low fuel consumption and advanced technology that are just as powerful as the larger engines.

What the Numbers Mean

You must have noticed items such as 1.8L, cc or engine displacement when looking through the engine specifications. Well, all these terms are useful in describing engine size, which you determine by the total volume of its cylinders. The number of cylinders in an engine usually varies from 3 to 12 for most cars. However, there are other unconventional cars in the market with as many as 16 cylinders or as few as 2.

Generally, supercars are the ones that pack many cylinders in the engine. 

But what does engine displacement mean? Many questions surround the engine's displacement, including how it relates to fuel economy, how it affects the car’s performance, and why it matters.

We will clarify these things so that next time you buy a car , you will know what you’re getting.

Setting the trend today are small engines with smaller cylinders for fuel-efficiency. These engines are then coupled with a turbocharger to compensate for their small size. Generally, small engines that have a turbocharger generate more power compared to the large non-turbocharged types. 

Turbochargers

Turbochargers are devices attached to engines, especially small engines, to boost the power they generate. They also contribute to fuel efficiency since these smaller engines use up less fuel but produce as much power as larger engines.

You can quickly identify a turbocharged engine by the letter "T" alongside the displacement specification. For instance ‘1.8T’ denotes a 1.8L engine with a turbocharger.

What Is Engine Displacement?

Engine terminologies can sometimes be confusing and boring. While not everyone is a car aficionado or wired towards the mechanic side of automobiles, people who are looking to own or drive a car must know the basics of an engine.

Engine displacement is the combined swept (or displaced) volume of air resulting from the up-and-down movement of pistons in the cylinders. In this repeating vertical motion, the pistons get to the highest point (Top Dead Centre )  to the lowest (Bottom Dead Centre) and then back. Regardless of the number of cylinders your engine packs, calculating displacement follows the same procedure.

Aside from the number of cylinders, you also need to consider the bore and stroke. The bore of a cylinder refers to its diameter. The stroke refers to the distance the piston covers as it moves up and down.

Engine displacement is expressed in units of litres. For instance, most modern cars run on a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, which means that each cylinder has a capacity of a one-half litre or 500cc. Cool, right?

So, what does this mean?

The abbreviation 'cc' stands for cubic centimetres, also written as 'cm 3 '. It is a unit of measurement representing the engine's capacity.

In simple terms, 1cm 3 refers to the volume of a cube with measurements of 1cm×1cm×1cm. 

The terms engine capacity and engine displacement are interchangeable, which explains why the engine capacity sometimes comes in units of litres or the corresponding cc.

An engine with a displacement of 1000cc has a capacity of 1000cc or 1 litre, so that:

1000cc = 1000 cm³ = 1 Litre = 1.0L

How to Calculate Engine Capacity 

You can find out the engine capacity of any car engine by the mathematical formula below:

Capacity = π/4 x (D) ² x h x N

Where D = Diameter of the cylinder or the Bore   h = Stroke   N = Number of cylinders in an engine

As you can see, the individual capacities of all cylinders are combined to obtain the engine capacity.

If your car has four cylinders and its engine capacity is 1.0L, then the 1.0L refers to the combined capacity of the four cylinders. It implies that all the four engines can accommodate a maximum volume of air/fuel of 1.0L.

Hypothetically, if the same car had a single-cylinder, then it would mean that the cylinder has a capacity of 1.0L. It is interesting to know that the Mercedes Benz MotorWagen had one cylinder in its 1.0L engine (954cc to be precise)

Before the 1980s, the standard unit for measuring engine capacity was cubic inches. One litre is equivalent to 61 cubic inches.

How Engine Capacity Affects a Car's Performance

In case you have not figured it out yet, the engine capacity plays a crucial role in determining the power, torque, as well as the mileage of your car. Power (expressed in HP or kW) and torque (expressed in Nm) are the frequently used measurement of the forces developed by an engine.

These two measurements are sometimes misunderstood. Torque refers to the rotational force that represents pulling power. You can think of power as a function of torque and engine speed which represents the maximum power an engine can develop.

As aforementioned, due to the introduction of smart technology, nowadays a smaller engine with a turbocharger can generate just as much power as a larger engine.

How Engine Size Affects Fuel Economy

Since a large engine burns more fuel, it logically consumes more fuel than a smaller engine in the same number of revolutions.

The most popular and widely used engine-type is the Internal Combustion (IC) engine. It is used in almost all cars and bikes. It is even used in industries to run large machines. An IC engine is also called a ‘piston-engine’, owing to the fact that it comprises a piston and cylinder arrangement, in which pressure generated by the burning of fuel is converted to proportional rotary motion of the engine.

Most IC engines these days come in multi-cylinder configurations. Modern car engines usually have 4, 6, 12, or even 16 cylinders powering their engines. Each of these cylinders holds a certain volume of ‘fuel + air’ mixture, which when ignited by their respective spark plugs, creates the pressure that pushes the piston down and sets the engine running.

The volume of this mixture that is swept or ‘displaced’ by the piston within a cylinder is that cylinder’s displacement, and the combined displacement of all the cylinders inside a car’s engine is called the engine’s displacement. Its unit of measurement is ‘cc’, which stands for ‘cubic centimeter’, and ‘lt’, which is the abbreviation for ‘liters’. So the next time someone asks you the ‘cc’ or the liter capacity of your car, you should immediately know that they are talking the engine’s displacement.

However, do note that cubic centimeters and liters aren’t one and the same thing. Though both are used to represent displacement, there is a small conversion factor involved between them. Each of these cycles consists of two equal and opposite motions of the piston which are governed by the crankshaft arrangement. When the rotating crank stops the piston from going any lower within the cylinder, the piston is said to be at the bottom dead center (BDC). Conversely, when the crankshaft stops the piston from reaching any higher within the cylinder, the piston is said to be at the top dead center (TDC). The linear distance between the BDC and the TDC is known as a ‘stroke’. Note that the shape and size of the crank decides the actual distance that the piston can travel in either an upward or downward direction inside. Typically, a crankshaft arrangement is so chosen that a small height within the cylinder remains unreachable by the piston during each cycle. This height is called the clearance height, and it protects the piston from banging on top or bottom of the cylinder. The clearance height is excluded from the displacement calculation.

Formula Derivation: As mentioned in the previous section, engine displacement is the combined volume of all its cylinders. The basic formula for calculation of the volume of any cylinder is

D = Diameter of Cylinder H = Height of Cylinder

In case of an engine’s cylinder, diameter is represented by bore while height is represented by stroke. Thus, by substituting these in the equation above, we get,

This gives us the working volume of one cylinder of an engine. Multiplying it with the total number of cylinders gives us the following.

The saying, however, was born long before the muscle car ever came to existence and was said by a Brit. A badass brit, mind you by the name of W.O. Bentley. That slogan is a pedantic way of saying "bigger is better," which is true for most things. So, what exactly is displacement, how is it measured and is there a replacement ? Class is now in session kiddies, best get your thinking caps on.

Engine displacement in simplest terms, is the amount of air inhaled by the cylinders. What does that mean? Combustion engines in essence, are fancy air compressors. Engine displacement is the swept volume of air moved inside the cylinders by the piston. It is determined via the bore (the diameter of the piston) and stroke (the distance traveled by the piston.) The larger the bore or stroke the larger the amount of swept air volume and thus the engine is more powerful. If you were to take a GM LS7, the bore is 4.125 and the stroke is 4.000. So how do you calculate total displacement? Time for maths. Calculating displacement is solved via the following: displacement = bore^2 x 0.7854 x stroke x number of cylinders.

For the LS7 the equation would be as follows: (4.125 in)^2 × 0.7854 × 4.000 in × 8 = 427.6503 cu inches. GM rounded down but the total nonetheless is 7.0-liters or 427 cubic inches. End maths. Is there a replacement for displacement? Yeah, there is. Forced induction is that answer. Hence why so many automakers have gone that direction. An explanation for how that works we will save for another time.
