Overview [ ]

Skill books are special items which increase the player character 's skills when used. Unlike those of skill magazines , the effects of skill books are permanent: reading a skill book permanently raises the particular skill by three points (four points with the Comprehension perk). Books are one-use items: they are removed from inventory after use.

Most skill books are identical to the books from Fallout 3 . Exceptions are the Wasteland Survival Guide (which improves the added Survival skill) and the U.S. Army: 30 Handy Flamethrower Recipes (removed because the " Big Guns " skill was merged with " Small Guns " into " Guns ").

Fallout: New Vegas has a total of 52 skill books, with additional 46 copies added by add-ons :

  • Dead Money adds an additional copy of skill book, except for the Wasteland Survival Guide .
  • Honest Hearts introduces the workbench crate , a container with random loot that has a chance of containing various skill books.
  • Old World Blues adds two copies of the Chinese Army: Spec Ops. Training Manual and one of the Big Book of Science . Books are also able to be crafted once at a workbench, using 25 blank books , two tubes of wonderglue , and the appropriate recipe.
  • Lonesome Road adds a single copy of each skill book.

The total amount of skill points earned from reading every obtainable skill book (excluding those found as random loot in Honest Hearts ), the player character can gain the equivalent of 282 skill points (376 with the Comprehension perk).

Fallout New Vegas Skill Book is a rare consumable item that can be found scattered in various locations all over the Mojave Wasteland. Using these books increases the relevant skill by three points and gives players the option to advance abilities that they would not otherwise focus on when leveling up.

These are not the same things as Skill Magazines, which only boost your skills for a short while. The bonuses imparted by Fallout New Vegas skill books are permanent.

The Best Perks In Fallout: New Vegas

  • Shotgun Surgeon perk boosts shotgun damage, ignore enemy armor points with shotguns in Fallout: New Vegas.
  • Strong Back perk adds 50 more pounds of carry weight for all your loot in the Mojave Wasteland.
  • Light Step perk lets you walk over traps without setting them off in Fallout: New Vegas.

The Fallout games have been around for a long time. With all the changes that have been made in modern games, some things have been kept the same up until Fallout 3. New mechanics and an overall revamp of the POV and graphics have brought Fallout back into the forefront.

Fallout New Vegas: Best Starting Stats To Pick

Another new mechanic in the more modern Fallout games is perks. Many fans consider Fallout: New Vegas to be the best 3D game in the series, so it's always a good idea to take a look at the perks available in that game. Below is a list of the best perks that your character can equip in Fallout: New Vegas.

Updated May 10, 2024 by Zackary Wiggs: A cult classic, even among the Fallout games as a whole, Fallout New Vegas took the series to the wild west with new threats, new experiences, but a war that still hasn't changed. As Courier 6, you'll have plenty of tough choices to make throughout your journey, including what kind of perks you'll invest in. Heavy-hitting weapon perks, ones that help you sneak past your enemies, or just ones that make you healthier by and large; here are some of the perks you may want to check out, whether it's your first or dozenth playthrough.

Shotgun Surgeon

Buckshot removal is extra.

  • Shogun Surgeon: Ignore ten points of an enemy's damage threshold with shotguns.

There are plenty of different builds to use to complete Courier 6's journey through the Mojave, and each of them has perks that will greatly benefit them. Shotgun builds are no exception to this. In fact, due to a few key details, they are one of the better builds out there. The Shotgun Surgeon perk earns a spot here as the only weapon type perk for a few reasons.

Shotguns are incredibly easy to find at any level, from a sawed-off to the high-level hunting shotgun, there's always one you can by or salvage. They are often devastating on a per-shot basis, especially at close-quarters and against unarmored, or lightly-armored, targets. Shotgun Surgeon increases that devastating ability, meaning medium and heavy-armored enemies also can be taken out with just a few shells.

Combine this perk with different ammo types like pulse slugs to be able to do more damage to special enemy types.

Strong Back

A caravan of your own.

  • Strong Back: With the Strong Back perk, you can carry 50 more pounds of equipment.

As you venture throughout the Mojave Wasteland, you are more than likely going to find hundreds of pounds of equipment you'll want to grab. From weapons to chems and everything in between, you're going to need a lot of room to carry around everything you want.

Strong Back is a fantastic solution for this, granting you an additional 50 pounds of carry weight. Anyone who has been caught short of becoming encumbered while foraging for valuables will know how powerful this perk can be.

A Softer Touch

  • Light Step: You will no longer set off floor-based traps by stepping on them.

There are few things more frustrating than having to restart an old save because a landmine you didn't see took you out. A keen eye is one thing while exploring the old ruins and Fiend encampments, but why worry about traps at all?

Fallout New Vegas: 15 Best Unique Armor Items

With Light Step, floor-based traps will no longer be a worry. You can walk, sneak, or run over them, and they won't go off at all. This is incredibly helpful in areas like the town around the Sierra Madre with what feels like a trap around every corner.

Your companions can and will still set off these traps if they walk over or near them, so make sure to travel alone or disarm any before they get too close.

Swift Learner

Book smart meets street smart.

  • Swift Learner: Adds an extra ten percent experience points any time experience points are earned.

The higher level you are in New Vegas, the better a lot of things get for you. Better perks, more health, and better loot too; it never hurts having the chance to level-up faster, which means Swift Learner comes in handy pretty early on. With this, you add another ten percent to any experience points earned, and that adds up quickly.

It is a perk that you can grab as early as level two, which means more experience for you early on, especially for those big main-story quests. Plus, there are three levels that you can put into this perk, which means an extra 30 percent experience points added on any time you kill an enemy, finish a quest, find a new location , or plenty of other things too.

Silent Running

Don't let them hear you.

  • Silent Running: Running no longer factors into a successful sneak attempt.

Crouch-walking towards targets is one of the worst aspects of a melee-oriented stealth build. Silent Running fixes this by making your maximum crouch speed produce no noise, an absolute game-changer for melee stealth builds.

Enemies in New Vegas make two checks to detect someone they look for enemies and they can hear enemies. Silent Running removes all audio-related checks enemies make altogether, meaning a build that has a maxed sneak skill can easily melee targets without getting caught. Combine this perk with Implant M-5 and Tunnel Runner for some absurd movement speed while crouched.

We Have To Cook

  • Chemist: Doubles the duration of all chem effects.

Despite what the description implies, every aid item in New Vegas benefits from Chemist such as Stimpacks and food.

Nearly every healing item in the game becomes twice as strong thanks to this perk, making it an invaluable perk for Hardcore playthroughs. This perk pairs especially well with Psycho, Turbo, and the Implant GRX perk.

Robotics Expert

The hard reset.

  • Robotics Expert: Adds a 25 percent damage bonus to all attacks against robots, and adds the option to deactivate them while sneaking.

Of all the various enemy types in New Vegas, robots may not be the most numerous out there, but they are one of the more deadly to come across. Eyebots, Securitrons, Protectrons, and even deadly Roboscorpions. The only thing worse is all those darn mutated bugs.

Fallout New Vegas: All Base Game Skill Book Locations

Robotics Expert means you will always be hitting robots a bit harder, which is great since their mechanical bodies are usually more resistant to damage anyway. Plus, those with a penchant for sneaking have the option to hit their off-switch when they get close while sneaking.

Finesse And Better Criticals

Hit 'em harder.

  • Finesse: You gain five percent increased critical hit chance.
  • Better Criticals: Your critical hits deal 50 percent increased damage.

Critical builds are some of the strongest in Fallout: New Vegas. This is mainly due to how potent critical damage is on most top-tier weapons, such as energy weapons. For those that want to kill enemies in a single shot, there isn't a more iconic duo than Finesse and Better Criticals.

Finesse will grant a five percent increased critical hit chance, while Better Criticals grants 50 percent more critical hit damage. One perk is decent on its own, but both become top-tier when used together. A five percent critical chance boost might not sound great on paper, yet the way New Vegas handles criticals means this is anywhere from a five percent to a 25 percent critical chance increase based on the weapon.

With a high enough Luck stat and the Built to Destroy trait, critical builds can output critical hits repeatedly that are all boosted by Better Criticals' absurd 50 percent damage increase. Just be sure your weapon has a good critical percentage multiplier before taking both of these perks.

Enhanced Sensors

They call them eyebots for a reason.

  • Enhanced Sensors: Better chance to detect enemies, even cloaked ones.

While the various level-up perks will take up most of your decision-making process, it is important to have a quick aside to take note of companion perks. There are plenty of good companions to travel the Mojave with, each with their own additional perks that they give you too.

Of all of them, few are as beneficial as Enhanced Sensors. This is given to you when Ed-E is traveling with you, and makes it much easier to detect enemies. It's pretty much an instant and continuous boost to Perception. It never hurts to know where your enemies are before they see you, regardless of build.

Get Your Beret Ready

  • Sniper: Get a 25 percent accuracy bonus when targeting an enemy's head in VATS.

Taking an enemy out before they can close the distance never gets old. The Mojave wasteland and its wide-open spaces are great for those with a keen eye and a steady hand, so it only makes sense to make good use of the various rifles you find across Fallout New Vegas.

The Sniper perk greatly increases your chance of a hit on an enemy's head in VATS, which funny enough, is usually their weak spot. Combine this with a sniper rifle, anti-material rifle, or good old-fashioned cowboy repeater, and you'll be making Boone proud in no time.

Hand Loader

A bullet with their name on it.

  • Hand Loader: You are more likely to recover casings and hulls. You also have all hand-load recipes unlocked at any of the wasteland's reloading benches.

Hand Loader might be one of the most underrated perks in New Vegas. This perk allows you to craft any ammunition type at workbenches and doubles the chance of finding casings and hulls from corpses. What's so great about this perk is the ammunition recipes it gives you. JHP, JSP, and hand-loaded rounds can all be crafted when you have this perk.

For those unaware, these ammo types have a massive damage multiplier of 1.3 to 1.65x and are much better at penetrating armor (excluding JHP). If this perk stated that it let you craft bullets that increase your damage by 65 percent, it would be a much more popular pick.

Implant GRX

We have the technology.

  • Implant GRX: You gain a non-addictive Turbo (chem) injector. This perk may be taken twice, with the second rank increasing the effect from two to three seconds and the uses per day from five to ten.

Many fans have wanted a real-time alternative to V.A.T.S. that mimics bullet time, a mechanic that slows down time and lets you line up your shots. Thing is, Obsidian thought of that already. Bullet time is in New Vegas under the guise of the Implant GRX perk, available at level 30 if you have eight Endurance or higher.

This implant grants a non-addictive drug that works exactly like Turbo, slowing down time for two in-game seconds. That duration does not account for the slowdown; the effect actually lasts for around 5.7 seconds. Grabbing the perk again will upgrade the duration from two seconds to three seconds, effectively granting a 50 percent duration increase.

What's even wilder is that Implant GRX grants five uses a day for no cost, the chem is non-addictive, and it is affected by chem-related perks such as Chemist. With Chemist and Day Tripper, a rank two Implant GRX can last nearly 23 seconds! And it has ten uses per day! New Vegas players that don't fancy V.A.T.S. need to try this perk.

Grim Reaper's Sprint

Get rewarded with each kill.

  • Grim Reaper's Sprint: Killing an enemy in VATS restores 20 AP.

VATS is the go-to way to slow down combat and see your chances on a successful hit, not to mention the ability to target various parts of an enemy. Grim Reaper's Sprint earns itself a lofty spot on this list for being so beneficial in different combat scenarios, and making VATS more powerful.

Fallout: New Vegas - Sniper Build Guide

Grim Reaper's Sprint means that any enemy you kill while using VATS will instantly reward you with 20 more Action Points. With the proper use of VATS and a powerful weapon, you can chain together kill after kill and take down mobs of enemies without them having much say in the matter. Combine this with perks like Sniper and an anti-material rifle, and you can lay waste to almost any large group of enemies with relative ease.

Make sure to time your VATS usage, as the AP bonus only activates once per VATS activation. So use it liberally.

Adamantium Skeleton

Wolverine claws not included.

  • Adamantium Skeleton: Reduce limb damage taken by 50 percent.

Throughout the Fallout games, Stimpaks can make or break your adventure, especially when an unseen landmine gets the best of your legs. In Fallout New Vegas, it can be difficult to get a stockpile of Stimpaks and Doctor's Bags gathered, so why not make it to where you won't need them near as much?

There are few things more annoying than having your accuracy reduced from an arm being crippled, or your movement slowed by your legs taking damage, Adamantium Skeleton makes that far less likely to happen. This means you can save your hard-earned caps for better things than doctor's bills and Stimpaks.

Jury Rigging

They aren't making new ones.

  • Jury Rigging: You may now repair any item using a roughly similar item.

One of the most important mechanics in New Vegas is the degradation of your gear. It will often sneak up on you, which is why it's important to have Jury Rigging. Not only does this weapon allow you to repair weapons that share categories, but it also makes maintaining unique items substantially easier.

Items such as the Remnants Power Armor and Anti-Material Rifle are nearly impossible to use long-term without this perk. Did your Anti-Material Rifle break? No worries, just find a BB Gun and you're good to go. This perk is equally absurd and powerful. It might not do anything exciting like Meltdown or Bloody Mess, but it surely raises the power level of your character by a substantial amount in the long run. Jury Rigging is easily the strongest perk in the game.
