Do keep in mind that the job posting may list the required information as part of the application process. If it does, follow the employer’s guidelines for what to send or upload when you apply.

The following application letter template lists the information you must include in the letter you submit with your resume when applying for a job. Use this application template as a guideline to create customized letters to send to employers with your resume.

Application Letter Template

Contact Information The first section of your letter should include information on how the employer can contact you. If you have contact information for the employer, include that. Otherwise, just list your information.

Your Personal Information FirstName LastName Street Address City, State, Zip Code Phone Number Email Address

Employer Contact Information Name Title Company Address City, State, Zip Code

Salutation Here is information on appropriate salutations for a cover letter.

It is the most common salutation:

Dear Mr./Ms. Last Name or Dear Hiring Manager:

Application Letter Content Your application letter will the employer know what position you are applying for, why the employer should select you for an interview, and how you will follow up.

First Paragraph: The first paragraph of your job application letter should include information on why you are writing.

Mention the job you are applying for and where you found the position. If you have a contact at the company, mention the person’s name and your connection here.

Middle Paragraphs:  The next section of your cover letter should describe what you have to offer the company. Make strong connections between your abilities and the requirements listed in the job posting. Mention specifically how your skills and experience match the job. Expand on the information in your resume, don’t just repeat it. Try to support each statement you make with a piece of evidence. Use several shorter paragraphs or bullets rather than one large block of text, which can be difficult to read and absorb quickly.

Final Paragraph:  Conclude your application letter by thanking the employer for considering you for the position. Include information on how you will follow up. State that you will do so and indicate when (one week’s time is typical). You may want to reduce the time between sending out your resume and following up if you fax or email it.

Complimentary Close:

Your full name is typed out

Modifications If You’re Emailing an Application Letter

If you are emailing an application letter, instead of sending a hard copy, you will need to make a few minor tweaks to the template above.

First, make sure to include an email subject line that is direct and informative. Typically, the subject includes your name and the job title you are applying for. For example Sherry Chao — Marketing Associate

Skip including your personal information (address, contact information), the date, and the employer’s contact information. Begin your email with the salutation. The body of the email — why you’re writing, what you have to offer the company, and how you will follow up — will be precisely the same as in the template above.

At the end of the letter, include a complimentary close, and then type out your full name on the line below. As well, you can include an email signature with your contact information and a link to your LinkedIn or Twitter account. Here is information on how to set up your email signature.

The letter for employment is what gives the prospective employer the first impression of you because it is always the first document in your job application that the recruiter will read, even before of your CV. That implies that you should get it right to grab the attention of the recruiter for all the good reasons. A letter that does not clearly express why you are the best candidate for the position or one with poor grammar and spelling mistakes, will send your submission to the reject pile. However, a good letter for employment works magic in convincing a recruiter of your abilities and your professionalism, and giving insights into your persona and character.

Not everyone believes that cover letters are important. Some prospective bosses may go straight to reading the resume and skip the letter. However, several of them still value the importance of a well-written introduction. Therefore, even though there is no guarantee that it will be read each time, it is wise to enclose one anyway. It has become equally common for cover letters to be sent in email form, these aren’t likely to be as formal as they were before the age of digitization. However, there are still a few essentials to include and that is why it is critical to know how to write a cover letter for job application.

2. Research before drafting the letter

Steps for the cover letter page format

Other than what is included in the letter, the actual appearance and feel of the document is an important feature of an application letter. Margins, font size and style, and alignment are important elements which factor in to the recruiter’s overall impression of you. Below are a few quick tips for a cover letter format when writing your own.

  • The margins are supposed to be 1” – 1.5”. If the content can’t fit there is always some wiggle room, just ensure that the letter does not seem crammed together.
  • Don’t use a font size smaller than the 12-point font unless when necessary.
  • Font style is really a matter of preference. Try to choose one that looks professional or that matches what the employer uses on their website. Keep in mind that different styles will change the size of the font.
  • Use a uniform alignment in the entire letter. All paragraphs should be left-aligned.

How To Write an Application Letter for Internship

Writing an application letter for a job search is typically different from one for an internship. Here is how to write a letter for intership.

Application letter internship

We have written a lot of content on how to write an application letter for job search. However, we thought that “how to write an application letter for an internship” may prove invaluable to tertiary students who constitute a good percentage of our blog readership.

An application letter for an internship is not the same as your regular application letter for employment. Chances are that if you’re applying for an internship you have no real work experience, which is the reason why you’re applying anyway whereas, a full-time employment letter normally stresses on your specific experiences and qualifications, and how they tie into the job requirements.

The perfect application letter for internship should therefore, focus on the following key points:

  • Your education
  • Your passion
  • What you intend to do, rather than what you have done.

Table of Contents

Internship Letter Format

Some companies have requirements for applying for internships which they specify on their website. Others have forms you fill out and submit online. In these instances, there may not be the need to write out an application letter as the forms are an adequate requirement.

However, where no such requirements exist and you’re just sending a speculative internship application or to a generic email address, you must get the letter format right in order to catch the employer’s attention.

  • Your physical address, email address and phone number at the top of the page on the right. (These days empolyers are recruiting digitally so it is advicesable you state just your email adress, telephone number and the the date of application.)
  • The name of the business and the contact person’s full name on the left.
  • Specify in the subject of the email, which position you’re applying fo.
  • An address to the reader directly (e.g; “Dear Mr Eshun” – try to avoid using “To whom it may concern” if you can). Where you do not know the addressee, use “Dear Hiring Manager”.
  • Briefly introduce yourself and specify where you heard about the internship.
  • Give background information about your program of study.
  • Showcase the skills and qualities that make you a good intern for the job.
  • End by thanking the hiring manager for their time. Specify a contact number which you csan be reached you at their earliest convenience.
  • Remember to sign before your name.

Other Attributes Count

Since you do not have any formal work experience, you can highlight the following to show you will fit in and not waste anybody’s time:

  • General skills that help you work in a team and as part of an organisation.
  • Personal attributes that will help you learn to work in a professional work environment
  • Volunteer experience or school club leadership positions that highlight your strengths
  • Athletic or sports experience (if relevant)
  • Any hobbies or interests that are relevant to the job or demonstrate your professional experience.
  • Any relevant project or research work you’ve done in the course of your studies.

No Experience, No Problem!

When writing an application letter for an internship, be absolutely honest about the fact that you do not have any real world experience. Yet, if you do have practical experience in an area of interest you’re applying for, be sure to highlight it.

For example, if you previously worked as a storekeeper in your Uncle’s minimart, you could include it as relevant experience when applying to intern for an administrative or similar position. If you conducted your undergraduate research in an area the organisation primarily operates, or deeply cares about, that could be a double bang for you.

Mentorship Opportunity

Highlight your willingness to learn on the job. If you are applying through a specific person you want to work under, demonstrate your desire for mentorship under the person’s professional guidance.

Demonstrate Your Interest in the Company

Research about the company, especially the department you want to intern with. Make reference to specific projects or development within the company that you will be interested in working on. You can even cite a reference within the company, with their permission.

Show how you developed an interest in the company. By demonstrating significant knowledge about the company and its activities by referring to specific projects, press releases or historical information, you show the hiring manager that you have a genuine interest in the company, and this is a big plus that will work in your favour.

Keep the following points in mind when writing your application:

  • What can I offer the company?
  • What are they looking for in an intern and how do I match that profile?
  • Why do I want to work for this company?

Include your CV, no matter how scanty in experience it may look. The key thing to highlight in your CV specific leadership positions held, previous internship, awards received, voluntary work carried out, relevant courses currently studying. You may want to look at how to write a CV on this blog.

The Human Resource Manager

VOC International

North Dzorwulu, Accra

Dear Mr. Appiah,

APPLICATION FOR A THREE MONTHS INTERNSHIP PLACEMENT

I am writing to you to enquire about a possible internship in your organisation.

My name is Amah Yeboah Kuma and I am an undergraduate student at the University of Ghana. I am currently in my fourth year, pursuing Sociology Major, and Psychology minor.

I read about your new project on youth empowerment in the three Northern Regions on your company blog, due to commence in May this year, which coincides with our long vacation. I am extremely interested in being part of this project. I am currently writing my undergraduate thesis on Designing effective Social Interventions to combat poverty in the Brong Ahafo Region. In the last academic year, I was part of a team of volunteers in my District Assembly distributing sewing machines to young girls as part of a larger youth empowerment program.

I am therefore writing to you to express my interest in being part of this project. Not only will I be able to learn and apply the theoretical skills I have learnt in the past four years, but this project will also give me the opportunity to impact the lives of young people, a desire that burns in my heart.

Please find attached my CV and academic credentials for further review.

I look forward to intern at VOC International.

Yours faithfully,

Amah Yeboah Kumah

Tips on How to Write an Effective Employment Letter

  • Be straightforward. In your first paragraph, explain simply why you are writing. Mention the job title and company name, and also where you came across the job listing. You can also mention why you are a potential candidate. This section should generally be short and on point. If you’re interested in learning about employee reference letter templates, feel free to click here.
  • Mention something different, something that can’t be found in your resume. It’s seldom to send an application letter without also sending a custom resume. Your application letter does not need to be a duplicate of your resume. You can narrate about your work experience and career.
  • Make a good impression. Your first smart goal with this letter is to move on to the next step and that is an interview. Your encompassing smart goal is to get a job offer. For a wider selection of formal letter templates, check out more options here. Use your application letter to further both of these causes. Provide information about your experience and background that show why you are a good candidate. Use this section to emphasize your strengths.
  • Don’t forget to close with all the important details covered. Include a thank-you at the end of your design letter . You can also share your contact information. If you want, you can inform them that you will be expecting an update from them. How you end your letter can provide a big impact on how you will be remembered by the people who will review your application.

Tips for Writing an Application Letter for a Teaching Job

  • Point out your accomplishments. Do not forget to include examples of your accomplishments in past jobs as a teacher. For example, if your students earned high exam test scores or if you received a teaching award, mention these accomplishments.
  • Don’t forget to mention any training or certifications you achieved. In your cover letter design , you might also include information on relevant certification and training. This will show that you are fit for the job.
  • Add related work off the school campus. If you have non-teaching work or volunteer experience that involves working with children, you can include this in your cover letter as well. You need to add this if you have definite teaching experience.
  • Make your cover letter distinct. Be sure to associate each cover letter to fit the specific school and job listing. One way to do this is to research the high school template and state why you think you’d be a good asset for that certain school. CV and Cover Letters : How To Write A CV In Ghana For Job Employment

how to write a cv in ghana for job employment

  • How To Write A CV In Ghana For Job Employment

In this article, we are going to discuss how to write a CV in Ghana to get a job. Usually you don't get called to come in for a job interview not only because you are not the right fit for the  job or your luck ran out. But most at times it is just because the right material wasn't presented to the hiring manager or recruiter. You saw a job post and submitted a CV containing less vital information that could make you stand out. This is really common amongst job seekers who fail to prepare  but don't worry.

What is a CV?

For those who don't know what a CV is. CV stands For Curriculum Vitae .

Curriculum Vitae is an outline of a person's educational and professional history, usually prepared for job applications. Another name for CV is a Resume. A CV is the most flexible and convenient way to make applications. It conveys your personal details in the way that presents you in the best possible light. A CV is a marketing document in which you are marketing something: yourself! You need to "sell" your skills, abilities, qualifications and experience to employers. It can be used to make multiple applications to employers in a specific career area. For this reason, many large graduate recruiters will not accept CVs and instead use their own application form.

What are the relevant informations a CV should include?

  • A good heading

The heading here will be your personal details which should include your name, email address or residential address, your date of birth , marital status, nationality and finally your contact number. Others may include their gender which is also necessary.

Including a photography isn't essential here. Depending on the country you find yourself in you might have to add your photograph. British CVs don't usually include a photograph unless you are an actor. In European countries such as France, Belgium and Germany it’s common for CVs to include a passport-sized photograph in the top right hand corner whereas in the UK and the USA photographs are frowned upon as this may contravene equal opportunity legislation - a photograph makes it easier to reject a candidate on grounds of ethnicity, sex or age. If you do include a photograph it should be a head and shoulders shot, you should be dressed suitably and smiling: it's not for a passport

You should be able to clearly state your objectives to hiring managers or recruiters. Your objectives here should be clear about your goals. It needs to details about why you're interested in a particular position or what makes you suited to the job. It should tell the hiring manager or recruiter whyat you can offer to the organization rather than stating you want to be a part of its success in growth.

Finally, it should highlight your strengths. It should tell the hiring manager or recruiter why you are the right fit for the job.

  • Personal Skills & Attributes

These are your people skills - interpersonal skills, communication skills, Critical Thinking and other qualities that enable you to be successful in the workplace. Employers want employees who are able to solve problems on their own using creative thinking and thoughtful analysis. Dependability, Commitment to achieving consistent result, Constant improvement, Self-Development are very important qualities in an employee. List your personal skills in bullets.

  • Hard /Technical Skills

These are the qualifications required to do the job. For example, computer skills, administrative skills, language or customer service skills. Presenting your technical skills on a resume can be a challenge. Find out what hiring managers want to see. When you know what they want to see, list the skills out in bullets.

  • Work Experience

In this section, try to use more action words such as developed,  conducted, trained, supervised and so on after stating the place of work and the work start date and end date. Try to relate the skills to the job opening. A finance job will involve numeracy, analytical and problem solving skills so focus on these whereas for a marketing role you would place a bit more emphasis on persuading and negotiating skills. Start with most recent jobs downwards. Do not forget to bullet the work places and the experiences as you list them.

Read Also :  5 Signs That Tell You Aced A Job Interview
  • Educational Background

As a college student or recent graduate, you should place the Education section after your Hard/Techical Skills section. Beyond that, the length of your section will depend on the amount of work experience that you have. this section will include the year your admission was processed and the year of completion, the name of the Institution and the qualification of the program you offered, The list should start with your recent qualification downwards.

  • Achievements

Any evidence of leadership is important to mention: captain or coach of a sports team, course representative, chair of a student society, scout leader: "As captain of the school football team, I had to set a positive example, motivate and coach players and think on my feet when making field position changes, often in tense situations". You can choose to go with evidence of employability skills such as team working, organising, planning, persuading, negotiating etc. You should seperate them out with bullets.

Read Also :  7 Things To Do To Stay Sane While Waiting For A Feedback After Job Interview

  • Interests/Hobbies

Avoid stating many passive, solitary hobbies (reading, watching TV, stamp collecting) or you may be perceived as lacking people skills. If you do put these, then say what you read or watch: "I particularly enjoy Fringe, for the vivid insights you get into what might be" .

Any interests relevant to the job are worth mentioning: current affairs if you wish to be a journalist; a fantasy share portfolio such as Bullbearings if you want to work in finance.

  • Finally, References

You can omit this section if the job description that does not require you to submit your references. if you want you can add this section. Normally 2 or 3 referees are sufficient. But one of your referees should be an academic reference. The rest can be employees from your last job.

What makes a good CV ?

A good CV  should be informative and concise. Its information should be clearly laid out, logically ordered, easy to read and not mixed up. It should be accurate in content, spelling and grammar. Nobody likes an employee who can't spell or does things in a disorganized manner.

This has come to be true also in the Professional and Career world. Your CV is your dress that goes ahead of you even before you appear and this has determined how a lot of people have been addressed. In a  previous article,  we wrote about reasons why job-seekers CVs are being dumped. It’s to help job-seekers avoid this, that we have thus put together a collection of templates and examples of CVs for different field – both for experienced professionals and graduates.

Our team of paper writers consists only of native speakers coming from countries such as the US or Canada. But being proficient in English isn't the only requirement we have for an essay writer. All professionals working for us have a higher degree from a top institution or are current university professors. They go through a challenging hiring process which includes a diploma check, a successful mock-task completion, and two interviews. Once the writer passes all of the above, they begin their training, and only after its successful completion do they begin taking "write an essay for me" orders.
