The aim of organizing the annual day was to announce the results and distribute prizes among the students. To make the program more engaging and interesting, some activities and performances were also prepared by the students. All the students of the school were present there to attend the event. The activities included dance, poem recitation, singing, drama, mime, skit, cracking jokes, comedy acts, and many more. During performances, a teacher also announced the results of all classes and the chief guest gave prizes to the students. At last, the principal delivered a speech in which he thanked the audience. Annual Day Function Essay: The school annual day is perhaps the function that we most eagerly await each year. This year too we had begun to prepare well in advance. On the day before the function, a full dress rehearsal was held and everything went off very smoothly.

Long Essay on Annual Day Function 500 Words in English

On the final day we all began to dress up as soon as we reached school at 8 a.m. The function was to start sharp at 10 a.m. The school entrance had been beautifully decorated with flowers and a gleaming banner. A flower-bedecked path lead up to the assembly hall where the function was to be held. As the parents took their seats, the teachers went about making last-minute checks and adjustments. Besides, some short plays, the students had prepared a variety of songs and dances.

The first item was put up by the junior-most class. Dressed as flowers and butterflies they showcased the advantage of nature’s beauty. As the butterflies flitted around the stage two children got their wings entangled. In trying to separate, one of the wings came away. Much to the amusement of all the two children started blaming each other, blissfully unaware of the audience. Everyone was in splits of laughter till some teachers came and rescued the act.

Next came the group songs and folk dances. Dressed in colorful skirts, the whirling dancers were a sight to watch. The class V students had prepared a Hindi play from Panchatantra. Everything went smoothly till the angry tiger tripped and fell while chasing the fox. Instead of roaring with anger, the student playing the tiger began crying aloud.

Fortunately, he was not hurt and began laughing when the fox dropped his mustache. This child, being smart, picked it up and put it in his pocket. The audience roared with laughter, but everyone loved the children. The last act was the play about a man who had lost his memory. The senior students turned out be excellent actors and their efforts were met with well-deserved applause. As the curtains came down, everyone was requested to go to the grounds for refreshments.

Annual Day Function Essay

Short Essay on Annual Day Function 150 Words in English

Students had put up food stalls and games. The handicrafts made by students were also put up for sale. There were beautifully embroidered handkerchiefs, colorfully painted boxes and sheets of hand-made paper for sale.

The atmosphere was relaxed and carefree as parents talked to teachers and also other parents. I went around visiting all the game stalls and won a prize for ‘looping the joker’s nose’. There were lots of tasty snacks for sale and for once my mother gave me and my sister full freedom with chaat and ice creams. As dusk began to descend, people started to leave. The annual function ended with a vote of thanks speech by our principal, wherein he also announced the next day as the holiday.

Significance Of The School Annual Day: A Principal's Take

The Principal of a school shares his thoughts on what a school's annual day function means to the school, teachers, and students. Hear what he has to say.

Significance Of The Annual Day: A Principal's Take

The beginning of a year is an eventful time for schools and students. It is also the time when most schools organize the most important event of the year, the annual day. Celebrating the school's annual day provides the school with an opportunity to showcase its achievements. This function also gives students an opportunity to showcase their various talents and interact with their teachers in a more informal environment. From dance performances to plays and musical events to speeches, the school annual day is one day that is eagerly anticipated by children and parents alike, every year. This is also a day when achievers are felicitated for their accomplishments in the academic year.

Along with students and teachers, the principal also plays an important part in helping organize the annual day and ensuring its success.

We talk to Dr Srinivasa Raghavan, principal of Bala Vidya Mandir School in Chennai to know more about his role and the significance of the school annual day in a student's life.

Can you share some of the roles and responsibilities of a school principal?

A principal is the custodian of a school. In India, this role is both administrative and academic. This means that a principal must completely monitor the pedagogical processes taking place in the school. This includes the training and behavior of teachers along with the behavior and safety of students.

Moreover, a good principal does not just stick to her assigned roles and responsibilities but is also heavily invested in the students. This means that she considers how children must be brought up, how to keep up with the social and technological changes of modern life, and the impact of society on education. This way a principal can evaluate a broad number of factors, which would help her to come up with effective and beneficial school policies.

Tell us about some of the challenges you face as a principal every day...

The hardest part is maintaining human relationships. We are quite like politicians in this respect. We have to address a huge number of parents with diverse views. This often means that we can't satisfy everybody. So, we end up facing criticism regardless of what we choose to do. Sometimes, this criticism is very hurtful, especially when we do something good and people criticize it.

What do you think is the most rewarding part of being a school principal?

Children's love. Nothing else can beat this best reward for me. Even if the children don't realize it now, they might in five or ten years. I know this because some of them have even come back to tell me how much they cherished their school days and how thankful they are.

Most schools are preparing to host the annual day. What do you think is the importance of celebrating this event?

The school's annual day allows students to display their talents and build their confidence. Some schools have their best students in the front, and others have their average and below-average students in the limelight. This is something we practice in our school. I have seen students benefit a lot from these functions as they shed their inhibitions and perform on the stage. Not to mention that they have more motivation to work on their talents, knowing that they can share them with an audience.

This is also a way for the parents to be involved, as they can come and encourage the children on stage. And not just their own children, but also other children. However, this is missing these days, as many parents only show up for their own child's event and leave once it's done.

Do you think celebrating the annual day also helps keep our cultural traditions alive?

Annual Day on its own doesn't have the power to keep our cultural traditions alive. Instead, a school should continuously work on this. One way to do this, as we do in our school, is to have small programs frequently instead of just one huge event. Moreover, these small programs don't always need an audience of parents but can also be for an audience of other students. In fact, it's important to have events just for a student audience.

Because, if a school has only one big event, like the annual day, then all the students end up being involved and don't get an opportunity to appreciate the talents of their fellow students. This is an unfortunate situation, as the amount of encouragement performers can draw from the appreciation of their peers is significant.

After the annual day is over, it's time to prepare for the final exams. And, for some, it's time for the dreaded board exams. What tips do you have for students?

A common issue is that most students only start preparing for the board exams toward the end of their academic sessions. Instead, they should prepare well in advance. This would allow them enough time to absorb the study material and practice the previous year's question papers. Having so much preparation can help them become more confident for the actual exams, which is important.

Indeed! The school's annual day is the culmination of the school's academic year. It's a time for celebration and recognition of the students as well as the school's achievements. It's also a time for teamwork and being proud of what the school stands for and believes in. Encourage your child to participate in the various events and see her blossom into an individual with several talents.

World Drug Day report highlights spike in drug use, increased trafficking

Seized marijuana and cocaine are analysed and inventoried before being transferred for destruction.

The UN agency tackling crime and drug abuse (UNODC) released its annual World Drug Report on Wednesday warning that there are now nearly 300 million users globally, alongside an increase in trafficking.

The  International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, or World Drug Day, is commemorated every year on June 26 and aims to increase action in achieving a drug-free world.

This year’s campaign recognises that “ effective drug policies must be rooted in science, research, full respect for human rights , compassion, and a deep understanding of the social, economic, and health implications of drug use”.

Ghada Waly, Executive Director of UNODC , said that providing evidence-based treatment and support to all those affected by drug use is needed, “while targeting the illicit drug market and investing much more in prevention”.

New threat from nitazenes

Drug production, trafficking, and use continue to exacerbate instability and inequality, while causing untold harm to people’s health, safety and well-being. — Ghada Waly

In the decade to 2022, the number of people using illicit drugs increased to 292 million, the UNODC report says.

It noted that most users worldwide consume cannabis – 228 million people - while 60 million people worldwide consume opioids, 30 million people use amphetamines, 23 million use cocaine and 20 million take ecstasy.

Further, UNODC found that there was an increase in overdose deaths following the emergence of nitazenes – a group of synthetic opioids potentially more dangerous than fentanyl – in several high-income countries.

Trafficking in the Triangle

The drug report noted that traffickers in the Golden Triangle, a region in Southeast Asia, have found ways to integrate themselves into other illegal markets, such as wildlife trafficking, financial fraud, and illegal resource extraction.

“Displaced, poor and migrant communities” bear the brunt of this criminal activity and on occasion are forced to engage in opium farming or illegal resource extraction for their survival; this can lead to civilians becoming drug users or fall into debt at the mercy of crime groups.

Environmental fallout

These illegal crimes contribute to environmental degradation via deforestation, toxic waste dumping and chemical contamination.

“Drug production, trafficking, and use continue to exacerbate instability and inequality, while causing untold harm to people’s health, safety and well-being,” UNODC’s Ms. Waly said.

The potency of cannabis has increased by as much as four times in parts of the world over the last 24 years.

Cocaine surge and cannabis legalisation

In 2022, cocaine production hit a record high with 2,757 tons produced – a 20 per cent increase from 2021.

The increase in supply and demand of the product was accompanied by a surge of violence in nations along the supply chain, especially in Ecuador and Caribbean countries. There was also a spike in health problems within some destination countries in Western and Central Europe.

Similarly, harmful usage of cannabis surged as the product was legalized across Canada, Uruguay, and 27 jurisdictions in the United States, much of which was laced with high-THC (delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol) content - which is believed to be the main ingredient behind the psychoactive effect of the drug.

This led to an increase in the rate of attempted suicides among regular cannabis users in Canada and the US.

The hope for World Drug Day

The UNODC report highlights that the “ right to health is an internationally recognized human right that belongs to all human beings , regardless of a person’s drug use status or whether a person is imprisoned, detained or incarcerated”.

UNODC’s calls for governments, organizations and communities to collaborate on establishing evidence-based plans that will fight against drug trafficking and organized crime.

The agency also hopes communities will assist in “fostering resilience against drug use and promoting community-led solutions".
