Importance of Google Reviews for Restaurants

When it comes to running a successful restaurant, Google reviews play a crucial role. These reviews contribute to a restaurant’s SEO rankings, helping it attract more customers and improve its online visibility. Positive reviews not only boost a restaurant’s reputation but also increase its click-through rates on Google Search and Maps. This ultimately leads to higher organic traffic and more potential diners walking through the door.

Google reviews also provide valuable feedback to restaurant owners. They offer insights into customer experiences, allowing owners to identify areas for improvement and address any concerns promptly. This feedback loop helps in creating a better dining experience, ensuring customer satisfaction and loyalty.

Additionally, Google places a high value on reviews from local guides, considering them more trustworthy. This means that having positive reviews from local residents can significantly enhance a restaurant’s credibility and attract even more customers.

Restaurant owners must prioritize Google reviews and actively engage with their customers’ feedback. By focusing on providing excellent dining experiences and encouraging customers to share their positive experiences on Google, restaurants can establish a strong online presence and build a loyal customer base.

So, how can restaurant owners ensure they receive positive reviews on Google? By following restaurant review etiquette and providing exceptional service, they can encourage customers to rate and review their establishment. Let’s dive into some key practices:

Restaurants that prioritize Google reviews and strive for positive feedback can reap the benefits of increased credibility, higher rankings, and more customers walking through their doors.

Benefits of Google Reviews for Restaurants

Google reviews offer several benefits to restaurants. Firstly, they improve a restaurant’s credibility and trustworthiness, as customers rely on reviews to make dining decisions. Positive reviews can lead to an increase in revenue, as customers are more willing to pay more for restaurants with favorable reviews. Google reviews also contribute to a restaurant’s local SEO ranking, improving its visibility in search results. However, negative reviews can have detrimental effects on a restaurant’s reputation, leading to decreased revenue and trust. It’s crucial for restaurant owners to respond promptly and professionally to negative reviews, addressing customer concerns and working towards a resolution.

  • Improved credibility and trustworthiness
  • Increase in revenue
  • Enhanced local SEO ranking

Positive Google reviews play a vital role in establishing a restaurant’s credibility and trustworthiness. Customers rely on these reviews to make informed dining decisions, often valuing them more than personal recommendations or other traditional advertising methods. A restaurant with a higher number of positive reviews is likely to attract more customers and generate increased revenue.

Moreover, Google reviews contribute significantly to a restaurant’s local SEO ranking. When customers search for restaurants in a specific area, Google takes into account the number and quality of reviews when determining search results. Restaurants with positive reviews are more likely to appear higher in search results, ultimately increasing their visibility to potential customers.

However, negative reviews can pose challenges to a restaurant’s reputation and success. They can lead to decreased revenue and erode customer trust. It is crucial for restaurant owners to respond promptly and professionally to negative reviews to address customer concerns and demonstrate their commitment to resolving issues.

Responding to Negative Reviews on Google

When faced with negative reviews on Google, it’s essential for restaurant owners to respond thoughtfully and professionally. Here are some guidelines:

  • Take time to understand the complaint: Read the review carefully and try to understand the customer’s perspective. This will help you respond empathetically and address their concerns effectively.
  • Respond promptly: Acknowledge the customer’s feedback as soon as possible. This shows that you value their opinion and are committed to providing a satisfactory resolution.
  • Show empathy: Express understanding and empathy towards the customer’s experience. Apologize if necessary, and assure them that their concerns will be addressed.
  • Offer a solution: Provide a practical solution or compensation if appropriate. This demonstrates your commitment to resolving the issue and can help restore customer trust.
  • Take the conversation offline: If the issue requires further discussion, kindly request the customer to contact you privately for a more personalized conversation.

By responding proactively and professionally to negative reviews, restaurant owners can show their dedication to customer satisfaction and mitigate any potential damage to their reputation.

Strategies for Getting More Google Reviews for Restaurants

Getting more Google reviews for your restaurant can significantly impact your online visibility and attract more customers. Here are some effective strategies to help you increase your Google reviews:

1. Ask your customers directly: After providing a great dining experience, politely ask your customers to leave a review on Google. Emphasize the importance of their feedback and how it helps your restaurant improve.

2. Offer incentives: Motivate your customers to share their experience by offering incentives such as promotions or discounts for leaving a review. This will encourage more people to take the time to review your restaurant.

3. Utilize text reminders and NPS score surveys: Send text reminders to customers after their visit, thanking them for dining at your restaurant. Include a link to review your establishment on Google. Additionally, using an NPS score survey enables you to collect feedback and prompt customers to leave a review.

4. Promote reviews on social media and provide physical reminders: Share positive Google reviews on your social media platforms to showcase customer satisfaction. Additionally, hand out stickers or pamphlets that encourage customers to leave a review while leaving your restaurant.

How to review any business or attraction on Google with Google Maps

  • You can write Google reviews for restaurants, attractions, and other locations on Google Maps.
  • Your Google review can help others find information and will appear on your "About me" page.
  • You can restrict your profile if you want your Google reviews to be hidden to the general public.

If you want to share your opinion — whether positive or negative — about a business, you can write a Google review. On the Google Maps website and mobile app, you can share reviews, add photos, and select a star rating for any business or location listed on the platform.

Here's how to write a Google review, why reviews are important, what the rules are, and what happens after you post a review.

How to write a Google review on Google Maps

To write a Google review on the Google maps website or mobile app, follow these steps:

1. Make sure you're signed into your Google account.

2. Go to maps.google.com or open the Google Maps mobile app.

3. Search for the place you want to review and click or tap on it to bring up the overview page.

4. On the Google Maps website, in the left sidebar, scroll down to the Review summary section and click Write a review .

5. On the Google Maps mobile app, tap the Reviews tab at the top of the page, and in the Rate & review section, tap on the stars.

6. On both the website and mobile app, you'll then be taken to a page where you can add a star rating, write a review in the text area, and upload photos.

7. Once you've finished writing your review, click or tap Post and your review will be made public.

Why are Google reviews important?

As long as your Google review is honest, you can use it to share your experience with others. If the experience was pleasant, you can help others discover and enjoy it as well.

Furthermore, it can also help the business or attraction, thanks to the positive rating and testimony your review will give.

If, on the other hand, you had a negative experience, your Google review could just be what saves others their valuable time and money on something you believe won't offer them the value they're looking for.

The rules of posting a Google review

In order for your review to stay up on Google Maps, it has to follow Google's rules . That means everything in your review has to be accurate, on-topic, and can't use defamatory language.

Your review can't be faked, copied, or stolen from someone else. It also can't be sexually explicit, offensive, or represent a conflict of interest (for example, users can't review their own business and reviewers can't be paid for their reviews.)

Users can report a review if it appears to violate the rules, and if Google agrees with that assessment, the company reserves the right to take it down, and may even suspend or delete "abusive accounts."

What happens after you post a Google review

Your reviews are public, so other people will be able to see your " About me " page, as well as other reviews and ratings you've posted, including any photos you added to those.

And if you're a part of Local Guides , which is essentially Google's version of Yelp, you can also earn points for creating reviews — points that lead to badges on your profile, as well as "early access" to new Google features.

If you're trying to review a place that isn't listed, Local Guides is also how you'll add the location to Google Maps so you can review it.

How to hide your Google reviews

If for any reason you want to hide your reviews from the general public, you can do so on both the website and mobile app. You'll be restricting your account, meaning that only people you approve to be your followers can see the reviews you've posted.

To hide Google reviews on the Google Maps website:

1. Go to the Google Maps website .

2. Click the icon of three horizontal lines in the upper-left corner.

3. Click on Your contributions in the sidebar on the left.

4. On the Contribute tab, click Profile settings .

5. In the "Your Public Profile" pop-up, click the toggle button next to Show your posts on your profile to turn the button from blue to gray.

To hide reviews on the Google Maps mobile app:

1. Open the Google Maps app.

2. Tap your account icon in the upper-right corner of the app homepage.

3. In the drop-down menu, tap Settings .

4. In the Account Settings section, select Personal content .

5. Scroll down to the Profile settings section towards the bottom, and tap the toggle button next to Restricted profile to turn the button from gray to blue.

The world of dining and drinking is an obstacle course wrapped in a labyrinth wrapped in a logic puzzle — it’s full of pitfalls, gray areas, and bewildering questions that really shouldn’t even be questions (How do I find the bathroom?) and yet, somehow, are. Fortunately, your friends at Eater are here to help: Life Coach is a series of simple guides to the arcane rituals of modern dining. Have a question or a quandary you’d like us to tackle? Drop Life Coach a line .

Reading reviews before plunking down cash for a purchase has become practically mandatory, whether it’s for an air fryer or an SUV. You likely scour Amazon reviews for the best cheap wireless headphones, consult the Wirecutter on the best immersion blender, scope out hotels on TripAdvisor, or scroll through Yelp before deciding which local pizzeria to order from. Intrepid diners are particularly enthusiastic about checking out reviews for new restaurants, with consumer surveys indicating that 91 percent of people read online reviews for local businesses at least occasionally — because unlike a crappy pair of headphones, a bad meal can’t be returned.

But as anyone who’s spent time scouring restaurant reviews on Google, Yelp, Foursquare, or TripAdvisor knows, not all user-generated reviews are created equal: As Lifehacker notes , “The rule with sites like Yelp is to take the general sentiment of the reviews with the understanding that the strangely glowing ones are probably staff or management, while the particularly nasty and vitriolic ones are probably self-entitled people who like to hear themselves complain.” Actually useful reviews fall somewhere in the middle, uncolored by vested interest in the restaurant’s success or failure and painting a relatively objective opinion of the diner’s experience.

Whether it’s a five-star Google review for a new coffee shop or a one-star Yelp evaluation for a neighborhood restaurant that’s gone to hell under new management, chances are you’ve posted at least one online restaurant review in your internet career (and probably will again). Rather than contributing to the endless sea of bad reviews out there that suffer from a lack of useful details, a palpable sense of entitlement (i.e., “Food and staff was great but was my birthday and I didn’t get a free dessert. One star!”), or just plain mean-spiritedness, do your part to make the internet a slightly better place and write one that’s worth reading by keeping a few simple guidelines in mind.

Don’t announce yourself as a reviewer.

Professional restaurant critics typically remain anonymous when they dine out for reviews, and you should, too. Announcing yourself as a Yelper implies you expect special treatment, and that’s the kind of entitled attitude that spurred South Park to skewer Yelp reviewers in a legendary 2016 episode. Also, if you tell the staff you’re a reviewer and do get preferential treatment (better service, more carefully cooked food, bigger portions, etc.) then your review won’t reflect the typical experience someone can expect to have at that restaurant, therefore defeating the whole purpose of writing a review in the first place. (You’re writing this review to give the restaurant feedback and help your fellow diners decide where to best spend their hard-earned money and not to boost your own ego, right? Right? )

Consider your implicit bias.

When it comes to reviewing restaurants and food from cultures that are not your own, be mindful. No one’s saying you can’t have strong feelings about tacos if you’re not Mexican, but be wary of using terms like “authentic” and “hole in the wall.” According to a recent study of 20,000 Yelp reviews of NYC restaurants, non-European cuisines, particularly Chinese and Mexican, are judged more heavily on their “authenticity” — which is typically associated with qualities like cheap prices and plastic stools, “build[ing] an authenticity trap where reviews reinforce harmful stereotypes that then become nearly impossible for restaurateurs to shake off.” (Other studies indicate that this kind of casual racism also makes people more likely to think they received food poisoning from non-European restaurants , despite the fact that it’s notoriously difficult to pin down the source of foodborne illnesses.)

In addition to avoiding propping up the “authenticity” trap, if it’s a cuisine you’re unfamiliar with, consider doing the tiniest bit of research before criticizing it. Saying “The meat in my pho had a lot of chewy gristle” when it was actually the beef tendon stated on the menu makes you look like a jerk, and you’re also missing an opportunity to expand your own culinary horizons.

Be specific and detailed with your feedback — positive or negative.

General statements like “The food was awesome!!” or “The steak sucked” aren’t particularly helpful to a reader, nor are they helpful to a restaurant owner who might be reading their reviews in search of actionable feedback. Unless it’s, say, a walk-up window or a takeout-only spot, aim to cover the three big points — food, service, and ambience — and be specific about what you liked (and what you didn’t): Say the pizza had plenty of toppings and a nice crispy crust, or that your server was friendly and attentive, or that the playlist sucked because it had too much Nickelback.

Also, don’t write a review of a place you went a year ago just to up your review count in pursuit of some sort of imaginary online clout. Reviews that say things like, “Went here a few months ago, don’t really remember specifics but food was okay, staff sucked” are surprisingly common and are useful to precisely no one.

Don’t take free food in exchange for leaving a good review.

Besides being against most review sites’ terms of service, accepting free food in exchange for leaving a good review and not disclosing it is actually a violation of Federal Trade Commission guidelines . Sure, the odds of getting busted for a review you wrote about a local burger spot in exchange for a free order of cheese fries are close to zero, but if you suffer from typical millennial anxiety, it’s just one more thing to keep you awake at night.

Before leaving a bad review, give the restaurant a chance to make it right.

Don’t post a negative review over something like food that came out cold, overcooked steak, or a flat glass of prosecco without first attempting to address it with the staff. Restaurants want you to be satisfied — give them a chance. No, it is not your job to only write glowing reviews of restaurants. You’re (probably) not a PR person or a marketing shill. But it is your civic duty to not trash someone’s business just for the hell of it. And wouldn’t you prefer having a good dining experience over racing home to gleefully write a one-star review? (Hopefully.)

Also, definitely don’t write a bad review while you’re still at the restaurant in lieu of talking to a manager about an issue that may have arisen, whether it’s a rude server or a cockroach. This sounds ridiculous, but it happens more than you’d think — especially on Yelp.

And if the restaurant makes it right, reconsider that one-star review: Say your steak arrived overcooked, but the server promptly whisked it away and returned with a proper med-rare specimen, or your soup was oversalted, but the manager took it off your bill. Restaurants are complex operations and mistakes happen — what’s really important is whether the staff resolved the issue when you brought it to their attention.

How to leave a google review.

Share your opinions with everyone using Google Maps.

Quick Links

Is my personal information exposed to the public, how to leave a google review on your computer, how to leave a google review on your mobile device, key takeaways.

  • Google allows you to leave reviews on Google Maps, but your personal information will be visible to the public, including your name and profile picture.
  • To leave a Google review on your computer, visit the Google Maps website, sign in to your Google account, search for the location, and click "Write a Review" to share your feedback.
  • To leave a Google review on your mobile device, use the Google Maps app, search for the location, tap the location's name, tap the "Reviews" tab, select a star rating, write your review, and tap "Post." Your review will then be live.

Like Yelp, Google lets you leave reviews, and everyone can see them right on Google Maps. You can review almost any location, from a local business to a hiking trail or historical landmark. All you need is a Google account.

Google doesn't allow anonymous reviews, which means that some of your personal information will be available to the public. This information includes your name and profile picture (which appear on your Google Account's About Me page), other reviews, photos, and videos that you've left, and the location information of those reviews.

This means, of course, that people can see your name, along with all of the locations you've reviewed. If that matters to you at all, you'll need to be cautious about the reviews that you leave and the language that you use when leaving the review.

To leave a Google Review on your Mac or Windows 10 PC, open the browser of your choice, visit the Google Maps website, and sign in to your Google account if you haven't already.

Next, enter the name or address of the location that you'd like to search for in the search box located in the top-left corner of the browser. Click the search icon or the result that appears below the search box to select the location. Or, you can simply click the location on the map.

The pane displaying the selected location's information will appear on the left-hand side of the browser window. Scroll to the "Review Summary" section and click "Write a Review."

A pop-up window will appear. This is where you'll leave the details of the review. First, select the number of stars that you want to give, with one star being the worst and five stars being the best.

Next, you can offer details about what you liked or disliked about the business. If you selected one or two stars, you'll see a few options to choose from about what you didn't like about the business. If you selected three stars, no option will appear. If you selected four or five stars, you can select what you liked about the business.

After that, you can type out a review. This can be as short or as long as you like since Google doesn't set a word count for Google Reviews. If you have some photos of the business that you'd like to share, you can click the box with a camera icon to add them from your local machine or from Google Photos .

When you're happy with the review, click "Post."

A message thanking you for your review will appear. Click "Done."

Your review is now published.

Where do you look when you’re looking for ice cream near you? On Google. What are you looking for next when you find this ice cream parlor? How many stars do they have, what customers say about their experience there and whether they have positive reviews. If they have bad reviews, chances are you’ll go ahead and try to find something better. That is the strength of Google reviews. Positive reviews show customers that the business has credibility.

How to leave a google review: quick guide, why is quick customer feedback important, how do i get more google reviews, can non-customers leave a google review.

Did you know that 84% of consumers trust online reviews as much as they trust personal recommendations from family members or friends? More than just credibility, positive reviews help you outperform the competition on Google Search so more customers can find you and give you five-star reviews.

how to leave a google review

Follow these simple steps for how to write a Google review, using either Google search or Google Maps as the starting point.

1.   Log in to your Google account

Log into Google by clicking the blue login button located in the top right corner of your screen. Enter your  email address and password  in the input field and log in. If you don’t have a Google account yet, you can register  here .

2. Search for the business you want to review

After you have successfully logged in, enter the  name of the company  , attraction or restaurant you want in the Google search field . This is also possible via Google Maps or Google+.

The relevant service provider must be called up on Google Maps using a mobile device. Then you have to click on the button  “Rate & write a report”  below .

3. Evaluate

As soon as you have received a search result, the company profile of the company will be displayed on Google. Here you can also read existing ratings and stars. To be able to write your own review, you have to click on  “Write a review” .

4.  Write a review

The rating is divided into 2 sections:

1. Assigned stars from 1-5    (1 very bad to 5 wow, great- I recommend them)   Decide with your click how many stars the company should get.

2. A text field in which you can write your opinion about the company. After you have written the report, simply click on  “Publish”  or  “ Publish” to publish  the report on Google.

IMPORTANT! The rating is often not displayed if the business website was created in the same network as the customer or with the same device. Evaluation terminals are therefore unfortunately not possible. Although this is a shame, it is intended to prevent fake reviews from being written.

  • Open your internet browser or your Google Maps app on your smartphone. Log into Google.
  • Search for the restaurant / company you want to rate.
  • Scroll down until you see the Write a Review button in the lower-right corner of the screen (just to the right of the Reviews section next to the Add Photo button).
  • Click Write a Review
  • Select the number of stars that you would like to give the company.
  • Write your personal experience / opinion in the comment field.
  • And finally, just click on send.
  • That’s it, you just wrote a Google review.

In looking at how to leave a review on Google, you should know that fast real-time customer feedback is important. Fortunately, leaving a Google review isn’t very time-consuming — unless a customer wants to rave on for several paragraphs about the company. And if that is the case, then the mission is accomplished.

However, the steps for how to writa review on Google and submitting the review is the easiest part of the process. If the customers know how to write a Google review, then this is also a “trick” for the respective company to hope for positive Google reviews.

Knowing the reasons that drive customers to leave a Google review is a good place to start. Also, it doesn’t hurt if you ask your customers if they would post information about their good interactions with your company.

Non-customers are not allowed to act as customers on Google — such a rating or review can usually be deleted. It would be fraudulent to evaluate a business you are not a customer of, in which you act as a customer.

A simple example illustrates this. If someone writes about a hairdressing salon on Google that their hair was not cut properly there, this rating is only permitted if the person rating actually received a haircut there.

Otherwise, the entry would make an untrue assertion, and untrue assertions are always prohibited in reviews. Non-customers are therefore not allowed to simply make untrue statements of fact in a bad rating… this type of entry can be removed by deleting it.

Non-customers, however, are allowed to rate like non-customers. Wwhat exactly does that mean for a Google rating?

However, this does not mean that non-customers cannot leave reviews on Google.

People who have not become customers of a company can review the company externally or with regard to service (initial inquiry, contact on the phone, etc.) and rate it. Of course, the limit of untrue assertions also applies here, ie nothing may be asserted that is not really true.

But a non-customer can write in a review on Google how they perceive the company from the outside. For example, a non-customer is allowed to write that the website is confusing, inquiries by e-mail were answered in an unfriendly way, or were ignored — or similar information, as long as it is factually correct.

How to Write a Review on Google

Help others by sharing your experience

Author avatar

Leaving a restaurant or local business after having experienced exceptionally good or bad service may inspire you to write a review of your experience. Doing so helps other potential patrons know what to expect from that establishment. A popular place to leave reviews, due to its visibility, is Google.

When you look for a business on the search engine, the ratings are one of the first things to come up. So how can you add your voice and share your own experience?

How to Write a Review on Google image 1

Google reviews is a feature on Google Maps, and as long as you have your own Google account you can start writing online reviews for businesses you’ve visited. There is even a chance to become what’s called a Local Guide, and you can get points for each review you leave to increase your level and visibility on review pages.

In this article, we’ll walk you through how to write reviews, and how the Local Guide program works.

Leaving a review for any place you’ve visited is easy. You just need a Gmail account. If the establishment you visited doesn’t have a page on Google Maps, you also have the ability to add it to leave your review.

Here’s how to leave a new review on Google:

  • In the Google search engine, search for the business name that you visited. You can also use a mobile device to do this in a browser, or on the Google Maps app for Android or iPhone.
  • If the establishment has a Google business profile, it will come up as the first result. If it is a chain store, make sure to double-check the address of the location you visited. Next to the star rating of the business, click on the number of reviews.

How to Write a Review on Google image 2

  • The business’s reviews page will open in a pop-up. In the top-right corner, click on the Write a review button.

How to Write a Review on Google image 3

  • Select the number of stars you want to rate the business, 1 being the worst and 5 being the best. You can’t leave empty stars, so you’ll need to select at least 1. Underneath that, you can expand on your rating and describe your experience. Under the text box, you can also add pictures if you have any.

How to Write a Review on Google image 4

  • When you’ve finished your rating and review, click on Post and it will be posted to the business’s review page.

Now that you’ve written your review, others will be able to see it by scrolling through the reviews section. Google may place your review higher or lower depending on how recent it is compared to others’ reviews, your influence as a Local Guide, or how a user chooses to have the reviews sorted.

How to Become a Local Guide

If you frequent Google review pages, you may notice that some people have a Local Guide tag. This can place their review above other customer reviews, especially if they have reviewed many places. If you want to become a Local Guide yourself, the process is actually very simple.

  • Go to maps.google.com/localguides .
  • Click on the Get Started button.

How to Write a Review on Google image 5

  • On the next page, enter your city. Then check the boxes below to agree to the terms. Then, click on the Become a Local Guide button.

How to Write a Review on Google image 6

  • You will automatically be redirected to your contributions page on Google Maps. From here, you can see your Local Guide level.

Underneath your Local Guide level, you’ll see the amount of points you have. You earn points by contributing to Google Maps, which includes reviews. You can earn extra points for things like reviews with over 200 characters, adding a photo or video, and responding to others’ questions on a business review page.

You can earn a Local Guide badge once you hit level 4, or 250 points from contributions. With each level, you’ll get a new badge, all the way up to level 10. Points don’t expire, however, if a contribution you make is removed by Google for violating their content policy, your points for that contribution may be taken as well.

How to Find, Edit and Delete Reviews

If you decide you reviewed a business unfairly, or made a mistake in your review, deleting or editing it may be necessary. Thankfully, it’s easy to find your past reviews and delete or edit any of them.

  • Go to Google Maps.
  • Click on the three bars in the top-left corner.

Help Others by Writing Google Reviews

Posting reviews on Google for businesses can help others looking for stores or restaurants find the best ones to suit their needs. So leaving honest reviews about places you visit can make it easy for potential customers to know what to expect. Customer feedback can also help small business owners out by leaving positive reviews to let them know what they’re doing well, and where they could improve.

How to write a Google review for any business or attraction on Google Maps

  • You can write Google reviews of restaurants, attractions, and other locations on Google Maps .
  • When you write a Google review, others can see your "About me" page and all your reviews.
  • Those who are part of Local Guides can also earn points for their reviews.

If you want to share your opinion - whether positive or negative - about a business, you can write a Google review. On the Google Maps website and mobile app, you can share reviews, add photos, and select a star rating for any business or location listed on the platform.

Here's how to write a Google review, what the rules are, and what happens after you post a review.

The rules of posting a Google review

In order for your review to stay up on Google Maps, it has to follow Google's rules . That means everything in your review has to be accurate, on-topic, and can't use defamatory language. Your review can't be faked, copied, or stolen from someone else. It also can't be sexually explicit, offensive, or represent a conflict of interest (for example, users can't review their own business and reviewers can't be paid for their reviews.)

write a restaurant review on google

Users can report a review if it appears to violate the rules, and if Google agrees with that assessment, the company reserves the right to take it down, and may even suspend or delete "abusive accounts."

What happens after you post a Google review

Your reviews are public, so other people will be able to see your " About me " page, as well as other reviews and ratings you've posted, including any photos you added to those.

And if you're a part of Local Guides , which is essentially Google's version of Yelp, you can also earn points for creating reviews - points that lead to badges on your profile, as well as "early access" to new Google features. If you're trying to review a place that isn't listed, Local Guides is also how you'll add the location to Google Maps so you can review it.

How to hide your Google reviews

If for any reason you want to hide your reviews, you can do so on both the website and mobile app. If you're a Local Guide, you'll still have all your earned badges, which will still be visible to the public.

A Guide On Google Restaurant Reviews

People care a lot about Google restaurant reviews. They trust them more than other stuff, like ambiance and food critics.

If you're looking for a certain type of food or a place to eat near you, you can just type it into Google, and Maps will show you the most popular options. This result is based on Google reviews, so a lot of restaurant owners try to get more out of reviews on Google every day to improve their SEO.

The top results have over 1,500 reviews, and they are the first thing you see when you search for the best restaurants in any location.

So, are Google restaurant reviews really that important? Yes, they are! And here's what you can do to get more out of them.

Why Google?

There are many review sites, but why should you focus on Google reviews for your restaurant?

Google is the most popular search engine, so it makes sense that Google reviews are widely read.

If you are craving Vietnamese food, you might simply type "Vietnamese restaurant" into Google. Google will show you the closest restaurants, but it will also show you the highest-rated Vietnamese restaurants. These reviews show up on the first page of Google because of the quality and quantity of the reviews.

Why Google?

Even if your restaurant doesn't have a large following or marketing budget, it can still rank high in search results with positive Google reviews.

If you don't set up your business on Google and start receiving reviews, you are missing out on a powerful marketing tool. The restaurant industry is competitive, so it's important to stand out.

You should still have a presence on other review platforms, but Google is the one to prioritize.

What Are Google Reviews?

Google Reviews is a way for people to share their experiences with businesses with other potential customers. When someone Googles any business, they can open the business's Google Profile, give it a rating from one to five stars, and leave a review.

Google Reviews are important because they give businesses feedback from customers. They let customers rate a restaurant based on their experience so businesses can easily find out what customers think of their food, service, and atmosphere. Reviews cover everything from the parking situation to how long it took the waiter to bring the check.

What Are Google Reviews?

When a customer leaves a review, it shows up next to the business's listing on Google Maps, so people can read reviews before they go. These reviews help customers decide where to spend their money and what products or services to buy.

Why Google Reviews?

Google is the most popular and reliable search engine in the world. You may be reading this blog after a quick Google search! Google's credibility and importance are well-established, but why is it also a great review tool? Here are the top reasons:

Do you know that around 88% of consumers trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations?

Why Google Reviews?

Provides information about customers' actual experiences: As soon as someone searches for your name online, one of the first things they will see is your Google reviews.

People are more likely to find your restaurant: Google search engine results typically combine your location proximity and Google ratings. Your ratings are aggregated from the reviews you receive on Google Maps for a specific location. Therefore, the better your reviews, the more likely people are to find your restaurant when they search for a specific location on Google.

Increase a restaurant's revenue: The better your Google reviews, the more customers will be drawn to your restaurant and willing to pay more. And it's free!

Local SEO ranking is improved: Having lots of good reviews is one of the most important factors that Google considers when ranking websites in search engine results pages (SERPs). According to Search Engine Journal, the number and score of Google reviews a business both influence local search rankings.

Get a higher click-through rate (CTR): Since people trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations, it makes sense that businesses with positive Google reviews have higher CTRs. These reviews make your business more visible on Google Search and Maps, and people are more likely to click on positive reviews.

How To Get More Google Reviews For Your Restaurant?

Here are some tips on how to get your customers to leave Google reviews for your restaurant, especially five-star reviews:

Send text reminders . Text messages have a high open rate, so sending a reminder to your customers to leave a review is a great way to make sure they see it. Use a service like Text My Main Number to schedule these texts and create custom templates.

Offer a promotion . People love free stuff, so incentivize your customers to leave a review by offering a prize, such as a free meal or gift card. Send a simple business text to all your customers about this promotion, or you can use a group messaging function to send tailored messages to different groups of customers.

Use an NPS score . An NPS score is a way to measure customer satisfaction. Send out an NPS survey via text message and ask your customers to leave a review on Google after they complete it.

Market it on social media . Encourage your customers to leave reviews on your social media pages, such as Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. Use social media to spread the word about your positive Google review.

Hand out stickers and pamphlets . This is a traditional way to promote your Google reviews, but it is still useful. Hand out stickers and pamphlets to your customers after they leave your restaurant or pick up their takeout order.

  • Give them a memorable experience . The best way to get customers to leave positive reviews is to give them a great experience. Create a welcoming environment, provide generous hospitality, and serve delicious food. When customers feel valued, they are more likely to leave a positive review.

What Makes A Google Review Relevant Or Useful?

Length : Reviews that are at least 200 characters long are considered more relevant. Google assumes that longer reviews have more content and, therefore, more useful information. For example, a review of a restaurant might include longer descriptions of the best dishes, details about the service, or suggestions on parking and reservations. Reviews that are longer are also more likely to rank higher in the "most relevant" list.

Specificity : Specific reviews are considered more useful than general reviews. Specific reviews are more likely to tell a story and provide more details about the reviewer's experience. For example, a specific review might mention the names of specific dishes that the reviewer enjoyed or the names of specific staff members who provided excellent service.

Local perspective : Google values reviews from local guides. Local guides are people who have a lot of experience reviewing businesses on Google. They are considered to be experts in the field of business judgment, at least in their area. Google believes that reviews from local guides are more trustworthy.

Keywords : Reviews that include relevant keywords are also considered more relevant. Google uses keywords to index and rank reviews. For example, if you are searching for "best Italian restaurants in New York City," Google is more likely to show you reviews that include these keywords.

Photos : Reviews that include photos are also more likely to be considered relevant. Photos provide additional information about the reviewer's experience and help to build trust with potential customers. For example, a photo of a delicious-looking dish at a restaurant makes a potential customer more likely to visit that restaurant.

What Makes A Google Review Relevant Or Useful?

Bad Reviews: Should I Worry About Them?

Bad reviews ruin your restaurant business. Just like health code violations, they will scare away customers faster than you can say, "I'm sorry."

Bad Reviews: Should I Worry About Them?

  • Potential customers will avoid your restaurant . A study by Soundwave showed that one negative review would drive away 22% of potential customers. And if you have three or more negative reviews, you can surely expect to lose nearly 70% of your potential customers.
  • Your revenue will decrease . A study by LSA Insider found that businesses with a star rating of 1-1.5 have 33% less revenue than the average business.
  • Trust in your brand will go down . Forbes reports that 50% of customers question the quality of a business that has negative reviews.
  • Your restaurant will rank low in search results . Review ratings are a factor that Google and other search engines use to rank websites. If you have poor reviews, you are less likely to show up at the top of search results.
  • The more negative reviews you get, the harder it will be to recover . A business with a lot of negative reviews will have to rebrand itself entirely to regain customer trust. And even then, there is no guarantee that customers will come back.

Bad reviews are very bad for your restaurant business. Do everything you can to avoid getting bad reviews in the first place. And if you do get a bad review, respond to it promptly and professionally.

How To Respond To Negative Reviews On Google?

Google ratings and reviews are the first place you should check for negative reviews. Responding to them is the first step to improving your Google review rating.

How To Respond To Negative Reviews On Google?

Here's how to respond to a 1-star review on Google:

  • Be professional and helpful.
  • Read the review carefully to understand the problem. Think about how you can fix it and what you want to say in your response.
  • Apologize if you made a mistake. Don't apologize if it's not your fault or if the customer is being rude.
  • If the problem needs more investigation, let the customer know. Come back and update your response once you have resolved the issue. If you need more information from them, ask them to contact you by email or phone.
  • If the problem is easy to fix, tell the customer exactly what you have done to fix it.
  • End your response on a positive note and thank them for bringing the issue to your attention.

Here is an example of a good response to a bad restaurant review:

How To Write A Perfect Reply To A Positive Google Review?

How To Write A Perfect Reply To A Positive Google Review

  • Thank the reviewer for their kind words . Let them know that you appreciate them taking the time to share their positive experience online.
  • Don't wait too long to respond. Show the customer that you value their feedback by responding promptly. If you wait too long, they may feel ignored and move on.
  • Keep it short and personal . No one likes to read long replies, so keep your response to the point. Address the customer by name and express your gratitude for their review.
  • Invite them back . If you made the customer happy, let them know. Ask them to spread the word about your restaurant on social media and to bring their friends and family back next time.
  • Use relevant keywords . Adding relevant keywords to your response helps your business show up higher in search engine results. Be careful not to overuse keywords, though, as this will make your response sound spammy.
