All the best slides, charts, and factoids from Apple’s WWDC 2016 keynote

Monday’s World Wide Developer’s Conference keynote was jam-packed with info about Apple’s core operating systems—iOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS—with info neatly presented in detailed slides that seemed to zip by a mere second or two after they hit the screen. Some of these slides went by so fast, that if you took your eyes off the live stream for one moment, you might have missed something fascinating—maybe not as exciting as new Apple hardware or software, but an interesting tidbit nonetheless. 

Like this slide. Did you know that 72 percent of WWDC 2016’s attendees are there for the first time, and that the youngest scholarship recipient is only 9 years old? Neither did we! Read on for more blink-and-you’ll-miss-it keynote moments—and some more obvious ones—featuring Apple CEO Tim Cook (pictured here) and a few friends. 

Apple’s first order of business was to talk Apple Watch. Vice President of Technology Kevin Lynch outlines all of the ways watchOS 3 will improve the Apple Watch’s performance , from speed to updates to how it gathers information.

Lynch also showed off three new Watch faces—one featuring Minnie Mouse and available in a few different outfits (pictured here), another showing a simplified, streamlined numerical layout (fittingly called Numerals), and one centered around your Activity rings. Existing watch faces will allow customizable complications, too. 

watchOS 3 also introduces a new emergency feature called SOS. If you press and hold the side button, your watch will call emergency responders in any country using your iPhone’s cellular connection or Wi-Fi, if your watch is connected to a network. 

Jay Blahnik, Apple’s director of fitness for health technologies, outlined some of the ways that watchOS 3 will make the Apple Watch a better product for wheelchair users. Here, he demonstrates three different motions that the Watch will be able to detect and caculate as daily activity. 

Blahnik also debuted a new stock Apple Watch app called Breathe, which guides users through focused breathing and meditation. 

Moving on from Apple Watch, we have the Apple TV . Senior Vice President of Internet Software and Services Eddy Cue took the stage to tell us what’s next with Apple’s set-top box. But first, he sang the praises of the Apple TV’s 6,000 apps, which include 1,300 video channels. 

Apple of course wants to broaden its TV offerings, and the addition of Sling TV is a huge one. Now, Sling TV subscribers can access live broadcasts from their Apple TV. 

The Siri remote is great, but the ability to control your Apple TV from your iPhone is an added bonus. Soon, we’ll have an updated Siri Remote app for the iPhone that pretty much mirrors the physical Siri remote. Not pictured: A new “now playing” viewer that gives you more information about the show you’re watching. 

The Apple TV announcement that seemed to be the biggest crowd-pleaser? Single sign-on, which makes logging in to various apps and channels on the Apple TV even easier. Here, Cue shows off all of the different passwords we typically have to enter when setting up our Apple TV, and then promises us that this method is being left in the dust. 

Siri can now perform broader search functions and can search within specific apps. Here, she’s searching for YouTube clips of Steph Curry.

Hmmm… one of these things is not like the other. Senior Vice President of Software Engineering Craig Federighi teased the next version of the Mac’s operating system by pointing out its lonely naming structure. From here on out, OS X is now called macOS, and the latest version is known as macOS Sierra . 

One of Sierra’s many new features is a Desktop folder in iCloud Drive. Mac users often use their Desktop as a place to save files they’re using in current projects. Now macOS Sierra will automatically sync files on your Desktop to iCloud Drive so you can access them from anywhere—on a Mac or even on an iPhone or iPad.

Another new Sierra feature is something we’ve seen ( and loved ) in iOS 9 on the iPad Pro: picture-in-picture. If you’re watching a web video, you can pull it out into its own stand-alone window. When you switch to another app window, the video window stays on top.

As usual, Federighi brings the jokes. One of macOS Sierra’s capstone features is Apple Pay for the web, and he showed us about what that process would look like. (People, please don’t bring your iMacs with you to your local coffee shop .)

When your Mac prompts you to complete your Apple Pay purchase, you simply move to your iPhone and use Touch ID, just as you would in a store. You can use your Apple Watch too. Pretty nifty. 

During WWDC 2015, Apple announced that they were launching Apple Pay in its second country: the United Kingdom . Now, Apple Pay is available in six countries, with three more launching in 2016: Hong Kong, France, and Switzerland. 

The most-hyped feature of macOS Sierra is Siri—welcome to the Mac, Siri! She’s sure to bring on the sass: One of the first things she did during her Mac demo was to throw some subtle shade at Windows. Cortana probably wouldn’t have liked to hear that. 

Federighi discussed many of the behind-the-scenes improvements that went into making Siri ready for the Mac, and better for iOS, tvOS, and watchOS. Here, he shows us some of the things Siri can respond to with ease. 

Next up, iOS 10—and sheesh, did we learn a lot about what’s in the iOS pipeline . iOS 10 includes major upgrades to iMessage, Photos, Siri, Maps, and Apple Music, and a brand-new Home app to control all of your HomeKit devices. Here, we see iOS 10’s new look, with more in-depth Notification Center widgets and 3D Touch quick actions. 

Unsurprisingly, Siri’s role has been expanded in iOS 10 too. For the first time ever, third-party app developers can build Siri integration into their apps with SiriKit. Here, we see how Siri works with messaging app WeChat. 

We didn’t see much on CarPlay today, but this quick look at using Siri to launch Skype in the car gives us hope for CarPlay’s future… or at least relief that Apple isn’t abandoning its car platform. 

Next-level Siri intelligence was also brought to QuickType, so whenever you get a text asking where you are, Siri will suggest dropping a pin, as well as store recent addresses, access your calendar availability, and offer multilingual support without having to change keyboards. Federighi describes this as “deep learning.”

Last year, Maps’ biggest update came in the form of transit directions. This year, it’s Extensions, which let you perform tasks—like making a reservation on OpenTable and ordering an Uber—without leaving the Maps app. Additionally, Maps has more proactive navigation, so you can see the traffic on the route ahead and spot upcoming gas stations and restaurants.

Apple’s stock Photos app makes some leaps and bounds in iOS 10, getting it closer to its rival app Google Photos. Photos has a new Memories tab that stitches together your photos based on facial recognition and location—but all that is done on the device to protect your privacy. Here, Federighi shows us a cluster diagram of how the app groups Memories together. 

It’s hard to believe that Apple Music made its debut on the WWDC stage just one short year ago. It’s off to a promising start, but will be seeing some big changes ahead. Here, Eddy Cue shows off Apple Music’s completely redesigned look . 

Besides a new look, Apple Music will have a new feature set , too. Here, Bozoma Saint John, Apple’s head of global consumer marketing for Apple Music and iTunes, shows us what Apple Music’s lyrics feature will look like. She also demoed its new For You section, on-demand shows from Beats 1 Radio, and more. Apple Music’s new look will launch this fall as part of iOS 10. 

We got a brief mention of Apple News, which gets a fresh design for iOS 10 and will support subscriptions, so you won’t miss any articles by your favorite publications. 

Remember Phone, the part of iOS and iPhone that actually allows you to make good old-fashion phone calls? That’s getting an updated look in iOS 10. Most notably, there’s a new voicemail transcription service that transcribes audio voicemails into text. Apple also introduced a VoIP API, so that whenever you receive a call from Skype or WhatsApp, it will look like a native Phone call, even showing up in your Recents list.

Much like how Apple’s Health app centralized all HealthKit data and apps, Home for iOS 10 will do the same for HomeKit. Here, Federighi shows us all of the different types of smarthome devices and accessories that use the HomeKit platform. 

The Home app in iOS 10 will provide quick access to all of your HomeKit devices, like smart lights, door locks, thermostats and more. You’ll be able to launch custom scenes with one tap, and view a master list of devices for individual control.

Stickers, giant emoji, a plethora of new special effects— Messages in iOS 10 is bringing in a wild lineup of new features to make this app more than just for basic text communication. 

WWDC is a developers conference, after all, so Apple called special attention to  Swift Playgrounds , a free new iPad app for coding beginners who want to create iOS apps using  Swift , Apple’s own programming language. Here, Vice President of Software Engineering Operations Cheryl Thomas shows off some of Swift Playgrounds’ featured lessons that help beginners learn coding concepts such as creating functions, issuing commands, loops, and more—while learning real Swift code they can use later.

4 Powerful Presentation Lessons from Apple

With the upcoming Apple announcement only a day away, the business world is buzzing in anticipation. What will Tim Cook unveil next—and how will it impact our lives? Whether tomorrow’s announcements harken a new iPhone or a wearable device, we can be certain of one thing: the presentations will be of the highest caliber.

Over the past three decades, Apple’s executives have delivered some of the best presentations in the business. From Steve Jobs’ unveiling of the first iMac in 1998 to Tim Cook’s keynote at last year’s Worldwide Developers’ Conference, Apple has served as an exemplary model for effective content and delivery for years.

As we get ready for the next big product launch from Cupertino, let’s look back at some of the presentation techniques that have made past Apple announcements so great. If you want to present like Steve Jobs, make note of this list in the prezi below and follow these tips next time you get up on stage.

1. KEEP YOUR MAIN MESSAGE SIMPLE—AND TWEETABLE.   (TWEET THIS!)

Apple sticks to sleek, simple design when it comes to its devices—and its presentations are no different. From the language to the visuals, everything in an Apple presentation is designed to convey one message at a time as clearly as possible. This dedication to clarity and simplicity ensures that Apple’s audiences come away from these presentations with the exact message that Apple wants to spread. Communications expert Carmine Gallo praises Apple executives for going so far as to make sure that their headlines are less than 140 characters long, so media outlets and audience members can tweet them out exactly as they said on stage. Take a look at Twitter after tomorrow’s announcement—you might just notice the same headlines, straight from Tim Cook’s mouth, making the rounds.

2. BRING YOUR DATA TO LIFE WITH VISUALS.   (TWEET THIS!)

Steve Jobs understood the importance of powerful imagery. When he announced the launch of the MacBook Air on stage in 2008, Jobs wanted to highlight just how thin Apple’s newest laptop computer was. Instead, however, of simply telling his audience the impressive dimensions of the computer, he showed them, using an image of a manilla envelope .

“It’s so thin,” he said, “it even fits inside one of these envelopes we’ve seen floating around the office.” With this powerful image, Jobs was able to get his message across in a much more compelling way than he would have with numbers and text alone.

Visuals are scientifically proven to help your audience remember your message. Several studies have shown that when combined with images, text-based information is  42% more memorable .

3. PREPARE FOR THE UNEXPECTED.   (TWEET THIS!)

At the Macworld Conference in 2007, Steve Jobs’ clicker famously failed him. Instead of throwing the wretched piece of plastic on the ground or storming off the stage, Steve kept his cool. He made a joke to put the audience at ease, and then launched into a story about his adventures with Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak in high school.

In a matter of minutes—which can feel like hours when you’re up on stage with no backup—the clicker was working again, and Steve was able to continue with his talk. Steve seemed like a natural on stage, but in fact he was meticulous about his preparation—which included preparing anecdotes to tell when clickers stopped working.

4. PLAN FOR A “WOW” MOMENT.   (TWEET THIS!)

Steve Jobs was famous for his audacious statements and bold choices, especially when it came to presenting. Jobs knew how to work an audience—and how to delight them with the unexpected. A great example of this kind of “wow” moment is from Jobs’ introduction of the iPhone in 2007.

“Today, we’re introducing three revolutionary products,” Steve began. “The first one is a widescreen iPod with touch controls. The second is a revolutionary mobile phone. And the third is a breakthrough Internet communications device.” He repeats these lines as the audience begins to cheer. “Are you getting it? These are not three separate devices. This is one device.” And the crowd went wild.

By baking a surprising “wow” moment into every presentation, you’ll be able to keep your audience engaged and enthused—because they’ll never know what to expect next.

Apple's secret keynote formula builds anticipation for new products

Following is a transcript of the video.

Narrator : Before we get a new iPhone, we get an Apple keynote.

Tim Cook : We've got some really exciting things to share with you, and we're gonna have some fun along the way.

Narrator : Apple has been holding this style of presentation for over 20 years. But it isn't just showing new products; it's telling a story. Over the years, the presentation has gotten flashier, but the story hasn't changed.

The keynotes always open with a video, which conveys a theme or idea that the keynote echoes. It's the introduction to the story. But it usually isn't about products. It's about imagination, accessibility, or even New York City.

♪ I happen to like New York. I happen to like this town ♪

Apple includes several more videos throughout its presentation. These build suspense leading up to a product reveal. And make a product feel larger than life.

Then, it's time for a history lesson. Tim Cook takes the stage, says "good morning."

Cook : Good morning.

Narrator : And shows how Apple has been in your life for years. He also explains the positive impact Apple has had. Part of that impact is growing communities. Apple products aren't presented as just computers or phones. The devices bring people together. And improve their lives.

You might have also noticed that they exaggerate...a lot. Apple describes everything with superlatives. Just listen to this description of the Apple Watch. That same segment says beautiful seven times. Repetitive exaggeration drives home Apple's message about a product. If a speaker keeps saying revolutionary, you walk away thinking this phone is revolutionary.

But you won't find too many specs in an Apple presentation. Apple talks in percentages more often than specifics. It's 40% lower power.

Phil Schiller : 40% more energy efficient.

Narrator : Or five times faster.

Tom Boger : Five times faster than before.

Narrator : You just need to know that this new version is better than the old one.

Schiller : The iPhone XS Max.

Narrator : Apple doesn't spend time talking about RAM or milliamps. It prefers fancy marketing terms, like Retina or 3D Touch.

Then it improves on its own terms. Plus to Max. Retina to Super Retina. But it still manages to keep the message clear and simple, often using a single phrase per slide.

It also helps that Apple's presenters are experts at keeping the audience engaged. They tell you exactly what to think.

Schiller : Well, you are going to be blown away with the pictures you can take with the iPhone XS's camera.

Jeff Williams : We think you're gonna love everything about the new displays on Series 4.

Schiller : We all love the cameras in our iPhone.

Narrator : And they talk in a conversational tone.

Cook : Wasn't that a fun video?

Narrator : It feels like a small presentation you were invited to. Not a livestream that millions are watching. Apple's keynotes started a trend that many other tech companies have followed. But companies like Google and Samsung aren't nearly as effective as Apple. Compare the introduction of the Galaxy Note 10 to the iPhone XS.

Drew Blackard : The Note 10 is built for a new generation. It's a generation that's reshaping everything about how we work and how we live. These days, we're catching up on work email one minute and gaming with friends the next. The line between work and play has pretty much disappeared. And that means we need technology that can seamlessly flow between the two.

Schiller : I am so excited to tell you all about iPhone XS. It is made of a surgical-grade stainless steel. It has a gorgeous new gold finish, on the front and on the glass. It is the most beautiful iPhone we have ever made.

Narrator : Apple is specific. It shows instead of just telling. And you're made to believe this is the most beautiful iPhone ever because of Phil Schiller's delivery. Samsung tries to be everything at once, and the message gets lost. But Apple is able to tell a cohesive story that keeps you engaged.

Layering these techniques creates a presentation that feels important. Nothing may be new, but it all feels groundbreaking.

Cook : That uses intelligent software to make the most stunning portraits. This was only previously possible with pro-level equipment.

Narrator : He's just talking about the iPhone's camera. Nothing specific or new. Apple uses bold statements to reinforce its importance.

Laura Legros : Now, the MacBook Air set the bar for great battery life in a thin and light computer, and the new MacBook Air is no exception.

Schiller : What the team has done is truly, truly break through. It's called the A12 Bionic. Your photos look stunning on iPhone XS.

Narrator : And it works. These presentations build huge anticipation before a product launch. With Apple products, it often feels as though the design is more important than what's inside. The same is true of these keynotes.

Apple is selling the brand, not an iPhone. And these presentations have become an essential part of that sale.

For most people, Microsoft 's PowerPoint remains the original and best of all the presentation software platforms out there. While other companies have managed to catch up and offer rival products worthy of consideration, the fact is that PowerPoint's familiar interface and ubiquitous availability means it remains a favorite for the majority of people.

On the one hand, it's long been a staple of the hugely popular Microsoft Office suite, meaning that for most users this is going to be the first - and last - presentation software they are going to need to use.

Additionally, Microsoft has made PowerPoint, along with their other office products, available as free apps (with limited functionality) on both iOS and Android for mobile use, meaning it's even harder to avoid them. And this is before we even consider the inclusion of PowerPoint in Microsoft's cloud-based Microsoft 365.

It does everything necessary that you'd expect of presentation software, allowing you to add text and media to a series of slides, to accompany a talk and other presentations. There are easy-to-use templates included to help spice things up a little, but even a general user with little experience of it is likely to find themselves able to use PowerPoint without much trouble at all.

Overall, it's hard to go wrong with PowerPoint, and although Microsoft 365 has a nominal cost, the apps are free to use even if they do have more limited functionality.

Google Slides  is part of the Google Workspace (formerly G Suite) office platform intended as an online alternative to Microsoft Office. It may seem a little limited by comparison to PowerPoint, but as it's browser-based that means cross-platform compatibility. Additionally, it allows for collaborative work, and Google Slides really works well here. On top of the fact that it integrates with the rest of the Google Workspace apps, not least Google Drive, and you have a contender. 

Zoho Show  is another of the many, many tools and apps that Zoho has made available for business use. It also operates in the cloud so it's accessible to any device with a browser, and it also allows for collaborative work. You can also easily share the link for users to download, or provide a live presentation online. The updated version has a simpler and easier to use interface and comes with a free version and a paid-for one with expanded features.

Evernote  is normally thought of as just note-taking software, but it does provide the option to create a presentation you can share online or with an audience. In that regard, it's a little more limited than the other options in not being dedicated presentation software. However, as an easy and handy way to pull together a presentation quickly, it could serve as a backup or last-minute option, especially if Evernote is already being commonly used by you.

LibreOffice Impress  is part of the open-source suite offered as a free alternative to Microsoft Office, and comes with a powerful array of tools and editing options for your presentation, not least working with 3D images. It's supported by a large community, so it's easy to find an array of additional templates. If there is a limitation it's that it's software you download and install rather than web-based, but any presentations created should be easily portable to the web if needed.

Adobe Spark  does things a bit differently, as rather than just use images it's geared toward video as well. This makes for potentially more powerful multimedia presentations, especially as Adobe also has a big selection of photos and images available for its users. There is a free tier for core features but requires a subscription for custom branding, personalized themes, and support.

Slides  comes with a lot of features in an easy-to-use interface, and involves setting up presentations using drag and drop into an existing grid. It's also internet-based so there's no software to download, and it only requires a browser to use and access.

Steven Spielberg created the original series, which was released in 1985, and this version picks up where he left off, with five episodes in its first, and so far, only season.

The series picked up a Saturn Award nomination for Best Television Presentation.

The show received mixed reviews from critics, who acknowledged its ambitious goals, but the execution left much to be desired. Amazing Stories still provides viewers with engaging sci-fi stories , with new technologies and ideas to explore in each episode. The series picked up a Saturn Award nomination for Best Television Presentation. It was Apple TV+'s first nomination for the award, but it lost out to The Mandalorian .

12 Extrapolations

The cast includes major names like Meryl Streep, Kit Harrington, Sienna Miller, Judd Hirsch, Diane Lane, Ed Norton, and Keri Russell.

While Explorations provides an intriguing perspective on the impact of climate change , critics note that the constant time jumps result in a sprawling narrative that struggles to come together in the end. Nevertheless, the eight-episode series remains a unique and entertaining expropriation of the consequences of climate change, watching it through different points of view in interconnecting stories.

11 Hello Tomorrow!

Hello Tomorrow! is a comedic science fiction series about a traveling salesman going door to door to sell timeshares to the moon . However, Jack Billings soon finds himself having to ensure that his fraudulent business doesn't come crashing down around him. Billy Cradup stars as Jack Billings, with Hank Azaria and Alison Pill also playing major roles.

On top of the quirky sci-fi storyline, this is also a father-son story, as Jack soon finds his son, who doesn't know who he is, and tries to connect with him in a small town without letting the young man know that they are related. The reviews for Hello Tomorrow!, which has yet to receive a second season, are fairly mixed, as there is praise for the incredible visuals but criticism for the underdeveloped characters, which causes the show to fall short of its potential.

Stars Jason Momoa As Baba Voss

See is one of the three shows that debuted on the same day Apple TV+ was launched. As of October 2022, the series has concluded with season 3. The storyline unfolds several centuries into the future, depicting a world where humanity has lost its ability to see due to a 21st-century virus. The cast of See stars Jason Momoa and Sylvia Hoeks, whose performances make them stand-outs in the series.

See is worth streaming as it offers a complete story.

However, the show faced criticism for relying too much on gore and at times having overly complex narratives. Despite these critiques, See is worth streaming as it offers a complete story, with each season building upon the last, which goes a long way toward giving it a satisfying conclusion. This is the first major blockbuster series for Apple TV+ as it tried to lure in new subscribers with the promise of big things.

9 Shining Girls

What makes this sci-fi is the fact that reality is constantly shifting and the hero has no idea what is real and what isn't.

The series has mostly positive reviews, with praise for its intriguing plot, Twilight Zone -like twists, and Elisabeth Moss' superb performance. However, some viewers found certain elements of the plot confusing and thought it ended on an underwhelming note. Nonetheless, for enthusiasts of dark crime dramas, Shining Girls offers a twist on the conventional narrative.

8 The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey

The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey follows a 91-year-old man with dementia, who uses a pill to temporarily remember his past to investigate the death of his great-nephew. The cast of The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey stars Samuel L. Jackson and Dominique Fishback, who give stellar performances. The movie deals with the horrors of memory loss, but Jackson gives a solid performance of a man who fights against all odds to solve the mystery at hand.

The series won four 6th Black Reel Awards for Television, with one going to Jackson for his sensational performance . It was also honored with five nominations at the NAACP Image Awards and two at the Critics' Choice Awards, although it didn't win any of those awards. As a six-episode limited series, The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey is a worthwhile watch for those who appreciate Jackson's work and enjoy a subtle sci-fi mystery.

Though Apple TV Plus holds onto its content more than other streaming services, there are some bonus movies from its library leaving this month.

The Apple TV+ show Invasion centers around Earth facing off against an alien species that threatens humanity's existence . The narrative takes place across the globe, providing five distinct perspectives on how individuals struggle to cope with the chaos. Season 1 has received mixed reviews, with some stating that the slow burn in the narrative kills any tension. Notably, season 2 improved greatly, as viewers now feel that season 1 seems like more of a prologue to what unraveled in season 2.

Invasion 's improvements for season 2 instill a sense of confidence for the forthcoming third season's ability to continue to be a stand-out series on the platform. The series also has a third season coming, with the renewal arriving in 2024. The series was praised for its effects work and was nominated for Outstanding Effects Simulations in an Episode at the Visual Effects Society Awards.

6 Dark Matter

Based on the science fiction novel by Blake Crouch, Dark Matter tells the story of a physician who is abducted one night on his way home by a mystery assailant. When Jason wakes up, he is in a strange laboratory and when he escapes, he realizes the Chicago he is in is not the one that he remembers. His wife and son are gone, there is a stranger who claims she lives with him, and people claim he is a brilliant scientist who designed a way to travel to alternate Earths , all of which are wildly different.

Jason has to find his way back to his reality when he learns the Jason from this world replaced him and wants to take his life as his own. Jennifer Connelly stars as Jason's wife while Alice Braga is a scientist from the alternate Earth who agrees to help Jason get back. The book was a huge bestseller, and the Apple TV+ series does a good job of adapting the intriguing story. There are nine episodes in the series and it premiered on May 8, 2024.

Stars Rebecca Ferguson As Juliette Nichols

Silo delves into the lives of a community residing within a 144-level silo, where numerous mysteries surround the reasons behind their habitation. Silo 's season 1 cast features Rebecca Ferguson as Juliette Nichols, who delivers an incredible performance as she works to uncover the truth of the silo. Silo's pacing is well-executed, as the show balances fully developing the various characters, building the world, and delivering captivating twists and turns successfully .

With how Silo season 1 ended , there is so much to explore in season 2, which is sure to deliver more mysteries and plenty of intrigue. The series is based on the book Wool by Hugh Howry, one of the most successful self-published books in history, and the series not only lived up to the source material but eclipsed it in many ways. Season 2 is currently in development.

4 Monarch: Legacy of Monsters

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is the sixth installment and second television series in the MonsterVerse franchise. The show comes after the events of the 2014 Godzilla film and follows members of the Monarch organization who monitor giant monsters. Monarch: Legacy of Monsters 's cast consists of father-son duo Kurt and Wyatt Russell , whose nuanced performances of the same character at different points in time are a highlight of the series.

The show brings a series about Titans to a very human level and has visual effects that breathe life into the monsters. Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is a must-watch for Monsterverse fans. It also helped lead the way into the next movies in the franchise, including Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire . On top of the Russells, the rest of the cast is amazing as well, with names like Kiersety Clemons, Anders Holm, Joe Yippett, and John Goodman in major roles.

3 Foundation

Foundation is an expansive thousand-year saga, which takes viewers across the universe as a group of exiles discover that they must rebel against the Galactic Empire to save it. The show currently has two seasons and as of December 2023, Foundation has been renewed for season 3 . The show has stunning visuals that depict the various planets, creatures, and expansive space, and it has won two Visual Effects Society Awards.

Foundation season 1 had generally favorable reviews, but moving into season 2, the show received a 100% approval rating. This is because the worldbuilding that happens in season 1 pays off significantly in season 2. Foundation is perfect for those who are attracted to large-scale sci-fi stories , and the direction that the series is moving in is setting up Foundation season 3 to be fantastic.

2 For All Mankind

For All Mankind takes place in an alternative reality showing a version of what would have happened if the space race never ended and the Soviet Union made it to the moon first. The interesting twist in history allows the characters to navigate the challenges of getting to the moon and beyond. The show currently has four seasons out and although season 5 of For All Mankind has not yet been confirmed, the show is planned to have seven seasons.

Four All Mankind has won two Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards , which recognize the series as an excellent television program. The series also has received recognition at the Saturn and Hugo Awards as well. As the narrative progresses, the series offers a glimpse into a world where space exploration continues on a massive scale. The show's unique premise makes For All Mankind a phenomenal series to watch.

Severance explores the lives of Lumon Industries employees, who have undergone a medical procedure called " severance " to separate their work lives from everyday life. Severance 's cast is led by Adam Scott, who draws viewers into the mystery shrouding Lumon Industries.

The show is a well-paced slow burn, which keeps the audience engaged while gradually unveiling different facets of Lumon and its staff.

Severance season 1 was nominated for three Golden Globes , which underscores the immense acclaim the show has received from average viewers and critics alike. It also picked up 14 Primetime Emmy Award nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series and acting nominations for Adam Scott, John Turturro, Christopher Walken, and Patricia Arquette. Its only wins came for Main Title Design and Music Composition. Apple TV+ renewed it for a second season, but there is no release date yet.

Everyone has their own personal preferences when it comes to earbuds, so before we dive in, here is what I looked for: solid sound quality, easy Bluetooth connectivity, decent battery life and a comfortable fit. My biggest pet peeves are earbuds that don't charge evenly, have difficulty connecting to my iPhone or feel uncomfortable in the ears. I've used all of these earbuds several times and will not include any earbuds that I personally wasn't satisfied with. 

Best Apple AirPods alternative: JBL Tune 130NC true wireless earbuds

These JBL earbuds feature advanced noise-canceling technology for a solid price. You can connect the earbuds to the JBL app to activate noise-canceling or ambient-aware noise-canceling. They offer a 40-hour battery life without noise-canceling or 32 hours of battery life with noise-canceling engaged.

They are designed to offer JBL's pure bass sound, though users can easily adjust the sound to fit their preferences in the app. The earbuds are also water-resistant and sweat-proof.

I bought these during an Amazon Prime Day sale because I wanted noise-canceling earbuds without the AirPod Pro or AirPod Max price tag. I think that these earbuds do an excellent job with both the active noise-canceling and ambient noise-canceling features. They connect easily and offer a long battery life, plus the sound quality is about the same as Apple AirPods. 

They're a great AirPod alternative if you want all of the features of the AirPod Pros at a price far lower than the least expensive Apple AirPods.

Best Apple AirPods alternative for fitness enthusiasts: Treblab X3 Pro earbuds with earhooks

These Treblab earbuds were an unexpected favorite. Historically, I haven't enjoyed wearing earbuds with earhooks, but these fit great and were incredibly comfortable. I hadn't heard much about this brand before but was incredibly impressed with the sound quality as soon as I put them on. These earbuds offer crisp, clear sound, and I truly felt as though I were able to hear all of the details and layered sounds in every song.

The Treblab X3 Pro earbuds are also waterproof and very secure. I tested these out on my dog walks earlier this month while California was having a lot of rain and wind. They performed well and stayed securely on my ears. I would definitely recommend these for runners or other fitness enthusiasts. These are my current go-tos when I'm going on a hike or running around at the park with my dog.

I've tried several budget earbuds, but these are the only models under $30 that you'll see on this list. That is because affordable earbuds like this tend not to perform well for me. 

They often have charging or connectivity issues, poor sound quality or feel cheap and don't quite fit right. That was not the case with these Jlab Go Air Tones though. These earbuds worked very well, connected to my phone easily and provided good sound quality for the price point.

These are also a great look-alike for the Beats x Kim Kardashian earbuds if you prefer nude-toned headphones but don't want to shell out big bucks for them.

Yamaha products generally offer a bass-heavy sound, which I'm a fan of. The sound quality is great on these, as is the noise-canceling functionality. These are the sports earbuds design, which I found more comfortable and secure than Yamaha's other earbud-style (some of their other styles tend to fall out of my ears a bit too often).

These earbuds also have a nice, long battery life. They are advertised as lasting nine hours per charge, whereas AirPods and many similar earbuds only have a four-hour battery life without the charging case. 

Best Apple AirPods alternative for gaming: Logitech G Fits 

These Logitech G Fit earbuds are an interesting AirPod alternative for gamers. The sound on these earbuds is optimized for gaming and it includes a high-quality mic if you like to game with others.

The setup process for these was very unique. You have to download the Logitech G Fits app and go through a quick setup process to mold the earbuds to your ears. You can feel the earbuds warm up and physically mold themselves to the shape of your ear. I loved this because I am kind of picky about the fit and feel of earbuds. This is the most comfortable and secure fit I've ever gotten from earbuds. 

I've had these for more than a year now, and they still work very well and offer a great fit and solid audio quality.

Longer charging cables

iPads tend to get great battery life, but if you’re a heavy user, you may find yourself wanting to charge up during the day. Unfortunately it’s not available in space black . But if you don’t mind going third-party, Baseus sells a 3.3ft black cable that should do the trick.

While you’re upgrading your charging game, you should know that the iPad Pro supports fast charging —but not with the included 20W power brick.

The new Magic Keyboard ( 13-inch , 11-inch ) has been one of my favorite aspects of using the new M4 iPad Pro. It improves on its predecessor in every single way, and I can’t think of a way Apple could make it better.

Similarly, the Apple Pencil Pro is a strong update that unlocks several new capabilities for Pencil users, like the squeeze gesture and gyroscope-powered rolling feature. If you’re an artist, this new Pencil is well worth the upgrade.

When Apple announced the new M4 iPad Pro and M2 iPad Air last week it also announced new accessories as well. One of them, the Apple Pencil Pro , builds on previous iterations and adds two new features; a squeeze gesture and barrel roll. Now, a new update to Goodnotes is bringing support for both to the popular note-taking app.

The two gestures will both be supported by the latest Goodnotes app on all compatible iPad Pro and iPad Air tablets (the two new models, then) so long as they're using the Apple Pencil Pro and running iPadOS 17.5 or later. If you just got your new tablet, you'll need to install that update yourself — they come with iPadOS 17.4 installed out of the box.

Installing the update will be well worth it though, with both the squeeze gesture and barrel roll being big additions and ones that you're definitely going to want to take for a spin.

Goodnotes announced the new features via a blog post that detailed what users can expect when they use their new tablet and stylus.

Starting with the squeeze gesture, users will be able to quickly switch between tools, access common commands, and more while using the barrel roll feature — tilting the Apple Pencil Pro during use — will allow the Goodnotes fountain pen to "feel even more like the real thing, with its ink flow responding dynamically to the rotation of Apple Pencil Pro."

These are all good things, and the new barrel roll-powered Dynamic Ink feature could make a huge difference for big handwritten note-takers.
