MDOT's new interactive map lets you check on bridge status throughout the state

Mackinac Bridge

A new digital initiative by the Michigan Department of Transportation makes bridge safety data more accessible to Michiganders.

The Michigan Bridge Conditions Dashboard provides up-to-date information on more than 11,000 bridges throughout the state, including locally-owned bridges.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer has called for increased transparency in government as well as improved infrastructure. MDOT officials cite this new interactive as achieving both goals.

MDOT Michigan Bridge Conditions Dashboard

In a press release, head of MDOT Bureau of Bridges and Structures Matt Chynoweth said, "We're very excited about the new dashboard. This supports both the governor's and state transportation director's objectives of transparency in government. It's a great tool, allowing the public to easily look into the condition of any bridge, MDOT or locally owned."

Users can sort data on the dashboard based on bridge location, status, ownership, and quality rating.

More from the MDOT press release:

Federal law defines a bridge as a structure carrying traffic with a span greater than 20 feet. The law also requires that all bridges be inspected at least every two years to monitor and report condition ratings. These ratings are based on a 0-9 scale and are assigned to each culvert and each deck, superstructure and substructure of each bridge. Bridges rated from 7 to 9 are designated "good," while ratings of 5 and 6 are "fair," and ratings from 0 to 4 are in the "poor" category.

The dashboard is connected to a database providing the most current information, so Michiganders can see the status of a bridge in real time.

National Bridge Inventory: Michigan

  • The state has identified needed repairs on 2,732 bridges.
  • This compares to 2,650 bridges that needed work in 2019.
  • Over the life of the IIJA, Michigan will receive a total of $608.2 million in bridge formula funds, which will help make needed repairs.
  • Michigan currently has access to $243.3 million of that total, and has committed $53.6 million towards 67 projects as of June 2023.
  • Of the 11,341 bridges in the state, 1,292, or 11.4 percent, are classified as structurally deficient. This means one of the key elements is in poor or worse condition.
  • This is up from 1,217 bridges classified as structurally deficient in 2019.
  • The deck area of structurally deficient bridges accounts for 8.1 percent of total deck area on all structures.

About the data:

Data and cost estimates are from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) National Bridge Inventory (NBI), downloaded on July 3, 2023. Note that specific conditions on bridges may have changed as a result of recent work or updated inspections.

Effective January 1, 2018, FHWA changed the definition of structurally deficient as part of the final rule on highway and bridge performance measures, published May 20, 2017 pursuant to the 2012 federal aid highway bill Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21). Two measures that were previously used to classify bridges as structurally deficient are no longer used. This includes bridges where the overall structural evaluation was rated in poor or worse condition, or where the adequacy of waterway openings was insufficient.

The new definition limits the classification to bridges where one of the key structural elements—the deck, superstructure, substructure or culverts, are rated in poor or worse condition. During inspection, the conditions of a variety of bridge elements are rated on a scale of 0 (failed condition) to 9 (excellent condition). A rating of 4 is considered “poor” condition.

Cost estimates have been derived by ARTBA, based on 2022 average bridge replacement costs for structures on and off the National Highway System, published by FHWA . Bridge rehabilitation costs are estimated to be 68 percent of replacement costs. A bridge is considered to need repair if the structure has identified repairs as part of the NBI, a repair cost estimate is supplied by the bridge owner or the bridge is classified as structurally deficient. Please note that for a few states, the number of bridges needing to be repaired can vary significantly from year to year, and reflects the data entered by the state.

Bridges are classified by FHWA into types based on the functional classification of the roadway on the bridge. Interstates comprise routes officially designated by the Secretary of Transportation. Other principal arterials serve major centers of urban areas or provide mobility through rural areas. Freeways and expressways have directional lanes generally separated by a physical barrier, and access/egress points generally limited to on- and off-ramps. Minor arterials serve smaller areas and are used for trips of moderate length. Collectors funnel traffic from local roads to the arterial network; major collectors have higher speed limits and traffic volumes and are longer in length and spaced at greater intervals, while minor collectors are shorter and provide service to smaller communities. Local roads do not carry through traffic and are intended for short distance travel.

Whitmer warned biden camp that he will lose her state, shot down speculation of her replacing him: report.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has reportedly relayed to the Biden campaign that the president’s humiliating debate performance last Thursday cost him her state’s electoral votes — while shooting down speculation that she wanted to replace him on the 2024 Democratic ticket.

Whitmer called Biden campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon on Friday night with an “unambiguous SOS” that the president can no longer win her state after the verbal slugfest with former President Donald Trump, a source told Politico .

In the call, she also tried to snuff out rumors that she wants to push out the oldest-ever president, the outlet reported.

The report noted the leak came from a potential rival 2028 presidential campaign, which underscores the politically precarious position in which Whitmer found herself.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer speaks before Democratic presidential candidate and former Vice President Joe Biden during a Get Out the Vote event at Renaissance High School in Detroit on Monday, March 9, 2020.

“Anyone who claims I would say that we can’t win Michigan is full of s–t. Let’s go,” Whitmer’s campaign account on X clapped back Monday afternoon, sharing a link to the governor’s Fight Like Hell PAC donation webpage.

An anonymous Biden adviser told Politico that Whitmer “especially” wasn’t “ready” for primetime — along with other Democratic presidential hopefuls.

“They’d all love an easy sprint,” the adviser said of all the candidates who could try to take up their party’s mantle in the event of a contested nomination this August.

President Joe Biden, right, and first lady Jill Biden walk off stage after speaking at a campaign rally, Friday, June 28, 2024, in Raleigh, N.C.

Reps for the Biden campaign declined to comment to The Post.

Whitmer, once a potential 2020 vice presidential pick for Biden, is among a group of Democratic governors — including California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker — who could replace the aging commander in chief .

An unnamed Democratic governor told Politico that “the temperature is high” among that cohort, with “a lot of anxiety, a lot of folks at the edge of their seat.”

US President Joe Biden and former US President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump participate in the first presidential debate of the 2024 elections at CNN's studios in Atlanta, Georgia, on June 27, 2024.

The knives-out moment is also keeping members of the group from saying anything — publicly or privately — that could be perceived as undermining Biden.

Vice President Kamala Harris immediately defended the president following his poor performance, describing it as “a slow start” and pointing, like many Biden allies on Capitol Hill, past the debate to the previous three years in office.

Other supporters of the president have harped on former President Donald Trump’s many “lies” during the CNN debate in Atlanta — and dismissed concerns about Biden’s mental slippage as being overly focused on “ one terribly bad night .”

US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden walk from Marine One to board Air Force One at Francis S. Gabreski Airport in Westhampton Beach, New York on June 29, 2024.

But some critics are calling for campaign contributions to PACs like Whitmer’s to gin up “momentum” for the Michigan governor’s potential 2024 candidacy, according to Politico.

“Over the next several weeks, party leaders and the press will be looking to see who has the momentum and the ability to beat Trump,” former Democratic Rep. Chet Atkins blasted out in an email to prospective donors following the debate last week.

“A massive outpouring of small and large dollar donations to Gretchen Whitmer’s political committee will send a strong and clear message,” the email reads. “It will also allow her to be ready on day one when the nomination opens up.”

Whitmer reportedly did not know the email was sent out, but will be traveling this month to San Francisco, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket to promote her new book, “True Gretch,” providing her with further opportunities to court prospective voters should she change her mind about the 2024 race.

Former spartan miles bridges reportedly no longer a free agent target for pistons, share this article.

It appears Miles Bridges will not be returning to his home state for the next chapter in his basketball career.

Aaron Johnson of Pistons Palace reported on Sunday that Detroit is no longer showing interest in signing the former Spartan during the NBA free agency period. Bridges is from Flint, Mich. and starred for the Spartans for a pair of seasons from 2016 – 2018.

Bridges has played his entire career for the Charlotte Hornets, appearing in 360 games across five seasons. Bridges averaged 21 points and 7.3 rebounds across 69 games this past season after missing the entire previous season due to suspension.

Update: The bridge reopened to vehicles by 5:20 p.m. Thursday, June 27, MDOT said.

BERRIEN COUNTY, MI -- Business I-94 (Main Street) is closed for vehicle traffic in both directions because of a malfunction of the Bicentennial Bridge, the Michigan Department of Transportation reports.

MDOT announced the closure before 3 p.m. Thursday, June 27. MDOT did not provide an expected timeline for the closure.

The Bicentennial Bridge over the St. Joseph River — which connects the cities of St. Joseph and Benton Harbor — is located at Mile 1.30 on the I-94 Business Loop.

The bridge was experiencing “mechanical difficulties,” the city of St. Joseph said on Thursday, June 27, and police were directing traffic.

The bridge can be raised and lowered, to accommodate boat traffic under it and vehicle traffic over it. Officials did not say which position the bridge was in Thursday afternoon.

Previously, the bridge was closed for about three weeks in April as MDOT worked to repair a broken part that prevented the bridge from being raised and lowered.

Former Michigan State Men's Basketball Star Was Mentioned in Potential Ben Simmons Trade

Former Michigan State men's basketball forward Miles Bridges' success at the college level has translated well to the pros.

The former Spartan comes off his fifth (active) season with the NBA's Charlotte Hornets, with whom he has averaged 14.8 points per game, 6.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 360 games so far.

It was recently revealed that the star Hornet was considered a piece in a potential trade prior to the trade deadline last season.

According to Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports, there had been negotiation talks between Charlotte and the Brooklyn Nets about a potential Bridges trade that would have sent three-time all-star Ben Simmons to the Hornets.

Per Fischer , "Charlotte already conducted its business at February’s trade deadline as a clear rebuilding seller. The Hornets have the impending free agency of forward Miles Bridges to sort through now. And while Bridges could command upward of $30 million, sources said, the Hornets are also believed to be open to parting with Bridges by way of sign-and-trade, should a productive opportunity present itself. Charlotte, sources said, held conversations with Brooklyn about swapping Bridges in a package that would have brought Ben Simmons to the Hornets in February. Sacramento was another team that inquired about Bridges at the deadline, sources said."

Bridges played two seasons at Michigan State before declaring for the NBA Draft in 2018 One of the top recruits in Spartan history, Bridges averaged 21.5 points per game, 9.6 rebounds and 3.1 assists in 62 games during his brief career with Michigan State. In his final season, he was named to the All-Big Ten First Team and was a consensus second-team All-America honoree.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer insists Biden can win her state and says she’s behind him 100%

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Monday insisted that President Joe Biden can still win her state, a key battleground in the 2024 election, even as many national Democrats question whether Biden should move forward after his shaky debate performance .

Whitmer’s statement comes as many in her party question whether she could step in for Biden and run against Republican Donald Trump this fall. Whitmer and several other top national Democrats have publicly backed Biden since Thursday’s debate.

“I am proud to support Joe Biden as our nominee and I am behind him 100 percent in the fight to defeat Donald Trump,” she said in her statement. “Not only do I believe Joe can win Michigan, I know he can because he’s got the receipts: he’s lowered health care costs, brought back manufacturing jobs, and is committed to restoring the reproductive freedom women lost under Donald Trump.”

The statement comes after Politico Magazine reported on Monday that Whitmer called Biden campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon on Friday. It cites “someone close to a potential 2028 Whitmer rival for the Democratic presidential nomination” who said Michigan’s governor “had phoned O’Malley Dillon with more of an unambiguous SOS: to relay that Michigan, in the wake of the debate, was no longer winnable for Biden.”

An aide to Whitmer, Helen Hare, said that the reported comment was false.

This story has been corrected to show that Jen O’Malley Dillon is chair of Biden’s reelection campaign, not the campaign manager.

Rapidan Dam in southern Minnesota experiences partial failure; no plans for mass evacuation

By Stephen Swanson , Riley Moser , WCCO Staff

Updated on: June 26, 2024 / 7:32 AM CDT / CBS Minnesota

RAPIDAN TOWNSHIP, Minn.  — Flooding on the Blue Earth River caused an abutment of the  Rapidan Dam to partially fail on Monday morning, and it remains in  "imminent failure condition ."

On Tuesday morning, Blue Earth County Public Works Director Ryan Thilges said the breach threat has diminished, though officials are still concerned because the dam was built on sandstone bedrock that can further erode.

Thilges says the dam itself was not breached. Instead, he described it as a "partial failure of the west abutment." The structure is intact but water continues to flow around it, eroding the slope  and  forcing an evacuation of the family home of the owners of the Rapidan Dam Store . Late Tuesday night, most of the iconic home collapsed into the river .

Blue Earth County Sheriff Jeff Wersal said the water level in a "catastrophic event would not be that significant."

If there is a full collapse of the dam, county leaders say the river could rise another 2 feet or so. There is a levee system protecting the city and officials are confident it will hold up.

Officials say the bridges spanning County Roads 33 and 90 are being closely monitored for debris passing downstream and may be closed if needed.

Xcel Energy says it has been fortifying several other facilities downriver with sandbags and barriers to protect them if the dam becomes compromised and reaches the substations.

Hundreds of people were without power on Monday night. Xcel says it restored power to about 600 homes and businesses near the dam around midnight.

The Blue Earth River begins in northern Iowa and meets with the river's west branch in Faribault County in southern Minnesota, according to the  Minnesota Pollution Control Agency . From there, it flows 108 miles north past the cities of Blue Earth, Winnebago, and Vernon Center to Mankato, where it enters the Minnesota River.

There are 21 cities in that watershed, of which Mankato and Fairmont are the largest.

The National Inventory of Dams rated the Rapidan Dam in poor condition  as of April 2023, classifying its hazard potential as "significant."

The Army Corps of Engineers and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission are still assessing the damage.
