The education and development of maritime leaders is integral to the mission of all maritime universities. With the increasing complexity of ship systems and the modern maritime environment, it is vital that maritime professionals be educated to the highest standards of teamwork and leadership, rather than focusing exclusively on their training as entry-level mates, engineers and shoreside professionals. While all maritime universities have elements of leadership in their student development, few have fully developed leadership programs within their academic coursework. This paper proposes a set of leadership approaches and techniques that can be employed in the classroom environment and argues that many leadership techniques and strategies can easily be embedded in existing major-specific coursework, and not just courses specifically dedicated to leadership. The techniques and approaches addressed were developed in two courses in the Global Studies and Maritime Affairs major. The key unit of analysis was student project teams, specifically, “leaderless” teams. While the expected salutary effects of the techniques and approaches used were not initially realized, they did demonstrate significant remedial benefits. The findings suggest that adequate development of the leadership capacities and skills discussed cannot be achieved in a single course. A multi-stage arc of leadership development, spanning curricular and co-curricular programming is indicated.

Leadership Case Studies in Education (2nd ed.) by Northouse and Lee (2019), the companion book to Northouse’s (2019) Leadership: Theory and Practice (8th ed.) is framed around the understanding that as educators, we are all leaders. This perspective is clearly articulated in the introductory paragraph: “By the very nature of what educators choose to do –facilitate the teaching of others– they are leaders” (Northouse & Lee, 2019, p. 1). A variety of leadership approaches are presented in the book providing a comprehensive overview of current leadership trends. Models and frameworks relevant to different leadership approaches are presented with supporting research and referencing. According to the authors, the purpose of the book is to “examine how leadership theories can be applied specifically to educational settings” (p. 2). Northouse and Lee (2019) aim to relate leadership theories to everyday leadership practice, thereby connecting the scholar and practitioner conceptualizations ...

Diverse views have emerged on leadership definitions, theories, and classification in academic discourse. The debate and conscious efforts made to clarify leadership actively has generated socio-cultural and organizational research on its styles and behaviours. This study seeks to identify the theoretical views of various academic scholars on some of the main theories that emerged during the 20 th century include: the Thomas Carlyle's Great Man theory, Gordon Allport's Trait theory, Fred Fiedler's Contingency theory, Hersey and Blanchard Situational Theory, Max Weber's Transactional theory, MacGregor Burns' Transformational theory, Robert Houses' Path-goal theory, and Vroom and Yetton's Participative theory. Empirical discourse that revealed findings of academic scholars have enshrined the import of leadership in organizations. Various academic literature that already have been subject to validity and reliability tests were reviewed and used to arrive at the findings. The study postulated the Mystical-man theory after a rich discourse and recommended it as the ideal theory for all Christian leaders to adopt as it is assumed to provide above average performance at all times, irrespective of followership behaviour.
