Named a Best New Book by People

A little book with a big message about life, love, and learning to say goodbye. Grandpa and Noah are sitting on a bench in a square that keeps getting smaller every day. It’s strange but also familiar, full of the things that have made up their lives: Grandpa’s work desk, the stuffed dragon that he once gave to Noah, the sweet-smelling hyacinths that his wife once loved to grow. As they wait together on the bench, the two bond over old jokes and their shared love of mathematics. Grandpa recalls what it was like to fall in love with his wife. She’s as real to him now as the first day he met her, but he dreads the day when he won’t remember her. Sometimes Grandpa sits on the bench next to Ted, Noah’s father—Ted who never liked math, and has waited his entire life for his father to accept him. In their love of Noah, they have found a point of connection. Grandpa, Grandma, Ted, and Noah all meet here, in this peculiar space that is growing dimmer and more confusing all the time. And here is where they will learn to say goodbye, the scent of hyacinths in the air, nothing to fear.

“Wise and heartbreaking, Backman’s slim novella celebrates the joy of connecting even in the midst of letting go.”

“Beautiful, dreamlike, heartbreaking, and heartwarming. Bring tissues. Bring all the tissues.”

— Real Simple

“I read this beautifully imagined and moving novella in one sitting, utterly wowed, wanting to share it with everyone I know.”

— Expressen (Sweden)

“Laugh-out-loud funny and sentimentally philosophical.”

—Lisa Genova, New York Times bestselling author of Still Alice

new book fredrik backman

By Elisabeth Egan

  • Jan. 14, 2021

HOMEBODY A few years ago, Fredrik Backman was looking for a new apartment in Stockholm when inspiration hit during an open house.

“We’d seen maybe nine apartments and I was like, ‘I’m good with all of them.’ I could live basically anywhere as long as my wife and kids are OK with it,” Backman said in a phone interview. “So I started looking at the people. Everyone in these places is insecure. Everyone is making a really big life decision. Everyone is standing there asking themselves a lot of questions: Where do I want to live? Is this the person I want to spend the rest of my life with? Are we going to have kids? Are the schools good here? Can we afford this? And everyone feels a little bit invaded: This could be my home and what are all these strangers doing here?”

The author of “ A Man Called Ove ” and “ Beartown ” knew he was standing in the setting for his next novel, “Anxious People,” which was an instant No. 1 best seller in the United States and is now at No. 10 on the hardcover fiction list . The book is equal parts comedy, relationship drama and locked-room mystery — “It’s not a murder or something gruesome” — in which a failed bank robber blunders into an open house and holds the attendees hostage. They’re a motley crew; on the first page, Backman writes, “This is a book about a lot of things, but mostly about idiots.”

As the title suggests, anxiety is a theme. It’s also an accelerant in Backman’s own creative process, although he didn’t use this term. “You create your own universe that you can step into, where things make sense or where you can, in my case, try to put words onto a feeling,” he explained. “I would assume if you play the cello night after night, once in a while you’ll look up and meet the eyes of someone in the crowd and see that a stranger feels the same thing. It’s like an extension cord: If I switch the light on over here, it will go on at the other end. That’s what I’m looking for when I write.”

Backman was honest about the doubts that plague novelists as they work, “with the only company being people you made up who live in your head in places that don’t exist.” He admitted, “During the writing of every book, I’ve had at least one breakdown where I have been 100 percent convinced that this is the time where people will grow tired of me; where readers will go, ‘All right. Enough of that guy.’” If the reception of “Anxious People” is any indication, now is not that time.

All of Fredrik Backman’s Books in Order

Go beyond A Man Called Ove .

fredrik backman books

Author of more than half a dozen bestselling novels, Fredrik Backman was already an experienced writer when he first burst onto the literary scene, having written for the newspaper Helsingborgs Dagblad in his hometown of Helsingborg, Sweden, as well as the Swedish men’s magazine, Moore Magazine .

His first novel, A Man Called Ove , about a curmudgeonly aging man who first clashes with and then befriends his chatty new neighbors, became a breakout hit, spending 42 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list.

Since then, Backman has written several other books, all of which have been translated into English. Whether you’re new to Backman’s oeuvre or just looking to flesh out your reading, here are all of his books, in the order they were first published.

A Man Called Ove

A Man Called Ove

By Fredrik Backman

Released in 2012, Backman’s debut remains his most well-known novel, thanks in no small part to two film adaptations. The first, starring Rolf Lassgard, premiered in Sweden in 2015. Later, in 2022, Tom Hanks took on the lead role in the film’s U.S. remake, A Man Called Otto .

According to Backman, he got the idea for the novel after reading an article about a real-life name named Ove who “had a fit while buying tickets at an art museum.” Backman began a series of blog posts under the heading “I am a Man Called Ove,” and eventually the idea to transform these personal observations into a fictional character led to the hit novel.

Things My Son Needs to Know About the World

When Backman made a deal with his publisher to release A Man Called Ove , he stipulated that they also release this nonfiction book, which he calls a “dysfunctional parenting guide.” In it, he collects countless essays both short and long about his experiences as a father, often in the form of important advice for his son as he grows up, including such vital wisdom as, “How to find the team you belong to” and “How to beat Monkey Island 3 .”

The result is a book that is perfect for both new parents and those who may feel that they no longer understand their own parents, which captures Backman’s “unparalleled understanding of human nature” (Shelf Awareness).

My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry

The translation rights to Backman’s second novel have been sold in more than 40 countries. Originally released in Swedish in 2013, and translated into English in 2015, My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry follows the life of Elsa, a precocious 7-year-old who was particularly close to her grandmother and who, upon her grandmother’s death, embarks on a quest to learn more about the old lady’s life, and the lives she touched during her journey through the world.

Named one of the best books of the year by Business Insider , this warmhearted novel is “a delectable homage to the power of stories to comfort and heal” and “a tribute to the everlasting bonds of deep family ties” ( Booklist ).

britt-marie was here, a fredrik backman book

Britt-Marie Was Here

People magazine called Britt-Marie Was Here “warm and satisfying.” First published in 2014, the novel follows a woman who leaves her husband of 40 years after she discovers that he has been unfaithful. She takes a job as a caretaker of a run-down recreation center in a tiny, dying backwater town and, in the process, is pulled out of her comfort zone, and discovers herself in new ways.

When her husband returns to her new doorstep, she has to decide if she wants to return to her new life or try to build something new in this “insightful and touching […] story about truth and transformation” ( Publishers Weekly ).

And Every Morning the Way Home Gets Longer and Longer

This “wise and heartbreaking” novella, first published in 2016, “celebrates the joy of connecting even in the midst of letting go” ( People ). In it, Grandpa, his grandson Noah, sometimes his son Ted, and the memory of his wife, all sit on a park bench in a shrinking square filled with memories.

Though those memories grow dimmer, the four of them all find a way to say goodbye without fear or pain in this touching story from a renowned observer of human nature.

Perhaps Backman’s most ambitious novel to date, Beartown  was released to rave reviews in 2017, and kicked off a trilogy that only recently came to an end. This “thoroughly empathetic examination of the fragile human spirit” ( Kirkus Reviews ) follows a small, dying town that has rested all their hopes on their youth hockey team, which has a chance at winning the national semi-finals and therefore maybe saving the town.

However, the pressure is great, and will lead to a terrible crime that will leave one girl traumatized and might tear the town apart forever.

The Deal of a Lifetime

“It’s a perfect stocking stuffer,” the Minnesota Star Tribune says of this illustrated novella from Backman, originally published in 2017. In it, a man who has succeeded in his career at the expense of his family must weigh the value of his own life when he is given an unexpected chance to change the life of a little girl dying of cancer in a nearby hospital.

The result is a “sweet, sad, but in-no-way-sappy novella” ( Library Journal ) that is destined to become a new Christmas classic.

Us Against You

By Frederik Backman

Just one year after the release of Beartown , Backman returned to the small hockey town of the title in this ambitious sequel, which explores the rivalry between Beartown and the neighboring burg, where many of the players from the town’s former hockey team went after the events of the first book.

“There is even more potential for book group discussion here as Backman explores violence, political maneuvering, communities, feminism, sexuality, criminality, the role of sports in society, and what makes us all tick,” according to a starred review from Library Journal .

Anxious People

Between the sequel to Beartown and the culmination of the trilogy, Backman released another standalone novel, about an unlikely encounter between several people at an apartment showing, who are all taken hostage by an equally unlikely bank robber.

For those taken with Backman’s charms but who want something less heavy than the Beartown trilogy, Anxious People represents a welcome “witty, lighthearted romp” ( Publishers Weekly ) that is filled with “both comedy and heartbreak sure to please Backman fans” ( Kirkus Reviews ).

The Winners

The long-awaited conclusion of the Beartown trilogy was first released in 2022. In it, we return to the small hockey town two years after the events that rocked it.

The town has tried to move on, but it has been difficult, and a great change is on the horizon in this “engrossing” ( People ) finale to Backman’s most ambitious series, in which “Backman takes competition, friendship, politics, and town rivalry to appropriately biblical proportions” ( The New York Times ).

Author Fredrik continues to write his books from his home in Sweden, where he lives along with his lovely wife named Neda Shafti Backman.

One of the initial books written by Fredrik Backman is titled as ‘Britt-Marie Was Here’. This book was written by author Fredrik in collaboration with author Henning Koch, who helped to translate it from Swedish to English. The book was released by the Atria Books publication in the year 2016. According to author Fredrik, the story of this book is a hilarious and heartwarming one which revolves around a reluctant outsider in a small village. She helps to bring about a complete transformation of the village. The woman is shown to have the knack of finding second chances and love in the places which seem highly unlikely. At the beginning of the book, Britt-Marie is introduced as a woman who does not like to have things messy around her. She likes to be highly punctual and work according to her plans. Usually, Britt-Marie’s day begins at 6 in the morning. She believes that the ones who wake up later are nothing but lunatics. Britt-Marie also likes to eat her dinner at the exact time. Britt-Marie like to give her suggestions to people about the things that she feels are right. She is not a passive-aggressive woman. But sometimes, people tend to misinterpret her sincere suggestions as more of criticisms, which is not at all her intention in the first place. She is around 63 years old and has experienced enough things in her life. Britt-Marie decides to walk out of her loveless marriage after sincerely carrying it forward for 40 years. She goes on to settle in a small village called Borg, and also finds a job there. When she arrives in the village, Britt-Marie finds that it is a derelict and devastated town, suffering from financial crisis. Later, she comes to know that the village is full of noisy children and muddy floors. Even her roommate appears to be more like a rat.

Britt-Marie thinks that it would be very difficult for her to adjust into this new messy world. The citizens of Borg have seen everything known to them crumble around. Now, the only thing that they are left with is their love for the game of soccer. Britt-Marie absolutely loathes about it. A time comes when the young children of Borg become desperate for their team’s coach. Eventually, they set their eyes on Britt-Marie. Even though she appears to be the least favorite candidate for the job, they is no other option left with them. Also, their need is genuine and urgent. What follows next is a beautiful, but unlikely partnership. As Britt-Marie takes up her new role as a mentor to the lost young children of the village reluctantly, she finds herself getting closer in becoming a vital part of the Borg’s community. To add to her surprise, she comes to know that a local policeman and friend named Sven has romantic desires for her. In the end, Britt-Marie thinks whether she will be able to find a place where she actually belongs, in this new world full f misfits and oddballs? The readers all over the world enjoyed reading the book a lot. They even praised author Fredrik for his excellent work in the development of Britt-Marie’s character. He has very well described a novel full of love and second chances. Fredrik has also shown that people tend to make unexpected friendships that teach them who they really are, as well as the things that they are able to do.

Another successful book written by author Fredrik Backman is titled as ‘My Grandmother Asked to Tell You She’s Sorry’. This novel was released by the Atria Books in the year 2015. The story of this book revolves around a young girl who goes on a beautiful journey by following the letters left behind her dead grandmother. With the help of the letters, the young girl brings to life the fairy tales from the life of her grandmother. The opening sequence of the book shows Elsa as a 7 year old girl. She is very much different from the other kids and is more attached to her grandmother. Elsa’s grandmother is around 77 years old. She appears to be a crazy woman, who always stands on her balcony and fires at the people who talk about Jesus. But, she is the only friend that Elsa has in her life. During the night time, Elsa likes to hear stories from her. Usually, her grandmother tells her fantasy stories about the fairies and places where people are not required to be normal. Elsa enjoys listening to such stories from her grandmother. After the death of her grandmother, Elsa discovers a series of letters left behind by her in which she has apologized to each and every person who she feels have been wronged by her. With this, the greatest adventure in the life of Elsa begins. As Elsa goes on to follow the interesting letters, she is taken to places full of monsters, drunks, attack dogs, as well as old people. However, these events help Elsa experience the fairy tales in real life. She goes on to get even closer to her grandmother and her love and respect for her increases multiple folds.

.I have read in places that the third book in the series of Beartown has been published. If it has, I am looking for it in the wrong places. I can patiently wait, but I would sure like to know if we will find out what happens to Benji. Will this be his book? Thanks

Who is Fredrik Backman?

Fredrik Backman is a Swedish author, born in 1981. Fredrik Backman books have been published in more than forty countries and several of his works have been made into films and/or television series. As a bestselling author, Fredrick Backman is known for his ability to write moving stories about community and relationships.

Fredrik Backman has written several novels, including short stories, stand alone books and the Beartown book series . The Beartown series consists of three books and has now been made into a HBO television series. He has also written one non-fiction book.

Fredrik Backman is up there as one of my favourite authors. His novels are just a perfect blend of humour, wisdom and insights into what makes humans tick.

What was Fredrik Backman’s first book?

Fredrik Backman’s first novel was A Man Called Ove published in 2012. It was originally published under its Swedish title, En Man Som Heter Ove .

Meet Ove. He’s not exactly the friendliest guy around – more like the neighbourhood grump who’d rather scowl at you than say hello. But there’s more to Ove than meets the eye. Behind that tough exterior lies a story and a sadness. When a lively young family moves in next door and accidentally wrecks Ove’s mailbox, it sets off a chain of events that leads to unexpected friendships. It’s a heartwarming tale that’ll have you laughing, crying, and rethinking what it means to be a good neighbour.

What are Fredrik Backman’s best books?

It’s obviously subjective and everyone will have their own favourites, but personally I love the Beartown series the most. I loved the characters and the exploration of human emotion. Benji Ovich is a character that will stay with me for a long time.

If you’re looking for a standalone novel, I’d recommend A Man Called Ove . It’s such a brilliant, heart-warming book and has now been made into a film starring Tom Hanks, titled A Man Called Otto .

If you’re looking for a quick read, And Every Morning the Way Home Gets Longer and Longer is a short story by Fredrik Backman that really packs a punch.
