Long ago, there lived three handsome young men in a certain village. They loved one another by heart. They were very good friends. They have full faith on one another. Once they were going on a pilgrimage. There was a thick forest on the way. It was the month of June. The sun was shining brightly in the sky. It was very hot.

They stopped under a shady tree to have a rest. They lay down on the ground to relax for some time. By chance one of them caught sight of a bag tied to a branch of the tree. He climbed up to the bag, untied it, and brought it down. In that bag there was another bag which was full of gold coins. They became very happy to see the gold coins.

They decided to dive the gold coins equally among themselves. Two of them started counting the coins. Just then the third friend said, “Friends, I am very hungry. I want food first.”

As they were all hungry, they decided to buy food from a nearby village. One of them left for the village. On the way he was caught by the greed. He thought of keeping all the gold coins for himself. He soon reached the village. First of all he ate food to his fill. Then he bought food for his friends, poisoned it, and happily left for the forest. He planned to kill his friends.

Meanwhile, his friends had decided to kill him and divide the gold coins equally between themselves. When he came back with the food, they fell upon him and killed him. They were hungry so they enjoyed the food their friend had brought for them from the village. They did not know that it had been poisoned by their friend. Soon they died.

Dear children, all the three friends died a tragic death only because they had become greedy. It is rightly said that greed is a curse. We should not be greedy. We should not take the things of other people. The result of bad deeds is always bad.

There was a small forest to the south of a certain village. In the forest there was a small pond too. A fox lived near the pond. It was the month of June. The sun was shining brightly in the sky. It was so hot and calm that not a single leaf moved. The fox was dying of hunger. she went here and there in search of something to eat, but failed. she was very sad. she did not know what to do. By chance she saw a crow. It came flying and sat on a branch of a tree. It had a big piece of meat in its beak. The fox at once thought a plan. she went under the tree and said to the crow, “Hello, how are you, Mr. Crow?” The crow made no reply. It did not want to lose the piece of meat.

“Mr. Crow,” said the fox once again, “you are very beautiful to look at. Your shining black feathers add much to your beauty. I heard you singing the other day. What a sweet voice you have! I haven’t seen any bird with a sweet voice as yours. Won’t you sing for a while today for me.” The crow became very happy to hear the words of the fox. It forgot about the piece of meat and opened its beak to sing. Down came the piece of meat and fell on the ground. The fox at once picked it up and left for his den.

“Brother Fox,” called out the crow, “won’t you listen to my voice? I sing very well.” “Mr. Crow.” replied the fox, “no doubt, your voice is very sweet. But at this moment the piece of meat is sweeter than your voice.” Dear children, in this world some people are very selfish and cunning. They deceive others by flattery and make merry. You should never let yourselves be taken in by such flatterers. Beware of them.

“Dear children,” said Mother to Jagan and Geeta, “God is the creator of the universe. It is He who is the ruler of the universe. He is one. His names are many. The Hindus call Him Ishwar or paramatma. “The Christians call Him God. The Sikhs call Him Wahe Guru and the Muslims call Him Allah or Khuda. No matter what we call Him, But He is the same.” “Then,” said Jagan, “we can worship Him in any form, can’t we?” “Yes,” replied Mother, “we can worship God in any form. But we must say our prayers from the core of our heart. He does listen to everything we say to Him. That is why we call Him the supreme power.

“We should pray to God daily. While saying our prayers we should not ask for anything from Him. He is our Father. He is Almighty. He knows everything we need. So we do not need to ask for anything from Him. He gives us all that we need without any request. We should be firm believer and have trust in Him. “You must have read about Mahatma Gandhi. He believed in God. He always prayed to Him for the good of all. He prayed for the wisdom of every people. He was always in favour of humanity. He used to say: ISHWAR ALLAH TERA NAAM

Sometimes, hints are provided for writing a story . Such hints can be in the form of:

  •   An outline or a few pointers pertaining to the plot;

  • A tiger gets caught in a cage.
  • A kind traveler releases it.

  • The man pleads for mercy.
  • Tiger allows him three chances to seek help.
  • The man pleads with a tee- the tree says men are selfish.
  • The man seeks the pathway’s help – it declines to help, calls people ungrateful.
  • A jackal comes by, the man calls for help.
  • The jackal asks the tiger how he had got caught.
  • The tiger enters the cage to show just that and the jackal latches the cage.

Once, a tiger got trapped in a cage. A kind traveler took pity on it and released it. The tiger immediately pounced on the man to kill him. The man pleaded for mercy and was allowed three chances to seek help. First, the man pleaded with a tree which said, “Why should I help a man? I give men so much and they still cut me down.”

Then, the man called out to the pathway for help. It said, “Men are ungrateful creatures. I show them the way and they, in turn, trample on me.”

The man then sought the help of a jackal that was passing by. The jackal asked the tiger, “I wonder how you got trapped in the first place!”

The tiger readily went into the cage to show how. The jackal quickly latched the cage and went off smiling along with the grateful traveler.

Write an interesting story justifying the proverb, ‘ Slow and steady wins the Race ‘.

Once, a hare who was very proud of his speed was challenged, to a long race, by a tortoise. The hare had been mocking the slow tortoise for days before it became intolerable for the tortoise to bear the end of the forest to the other.

The race began the next day with the first ray of the sun. The hare was halfway through within no time. The tortoise was nowhere to be seen. Laughing away arrogantly, the hare lay down under a tree to rest for a while and then he fell asleep. While he slept, the tortoise continued on, but steadily, towards the destination.

The hare woke up with a start to find that evening was drawing to a close. He leaped fast and reached the finishing line to see that the tortoise had already reached there.

He hung his head in shame.

Incorporate the following words and phrases in a folktale i.e., a grandmother’s story.

A monkey on the tree laden with fruits: river: out on the bank: a crocodile: gave fruits: became friends: Greedy wife: the monkey’s heart: midstream: truth: quickly climbed up the tree.

Once, a monkey lived on a tree laden with fruit by the side of a river. In that river, he lived a huge crocodile with his family. He often came out on the bank in search of food. The monkey gave the crocodile lots of fruits from the tree. Gradually, the monkey and the crocodile became friends. The crocodile ate some of the fruits and also took some for his wife. One day, his greedy wife, demanded the monkey’s heart. The crocodile agreed, though reluctantly. He invited the monkey to his house for dinner. Carrying the monkey on his back, the crocodile started his journey home. Once they reached midstream, he told the monkey the truth.

The monkey was clever. He said that he had left his heart on the tree. So, the crocodile, with the monkey on his back, returned to the tree. On reaching the bank, the monkey quickly climbed up the tree. He told the crocodile that that was the end of their friendship.

The Student of class 9 and 10 were asked to write one story each. Meena began well but fell short of ideas and was unable to complete her story. Help her to complete write the story in about 100 words.

Once, a wood-cutter was cutting a branch of a tree on the bank of a river. His axe accidentally fell into the river. He began to curse the river. The river god appeared before him…

Once, a wood-cutter was cutting a branch of a tree on the bank of a river. His axe accidentally fell into the river. He began to curse the river. The river god appeared before him holding a golden axe.

“Here! Take your axe back,” the river god said.

“No sir, mine was an iron axe,” said the wood-cutter. The river god was so pleased with the man’s honesty that he gave him both the axes – the golden one as well as the wood-cutter’s own.

So, the moral of the story is -Honesty is the best policy.

Given below is an unfinished story. Complete the same in not less than 80 words.

Once, a stag who came to a river to drink water noticed his own reflection in it.

“What lovely horns I have!” he said with great pride.

But the sight of his thin and ugly legs filled him with hatred. ….

Just then, he saw a pack of hounds approaching. At once, he took to his heels and ran to safety. But as he did himself in the bushes his horns got entangled into them. The more he tried to free himself, the more his horns got trapped. Soon, the hounds in and tore his body into pieces.

As he lay dying, the stag realised that he had been a fool to value beauty over usefulness. His ugly legs could have carried him to safety if his beautiful horns hadn’t got trapped in the bushes.

Given below is the ending of a story that you are required to construct in around 100 words. Also, provide a suitable title for the story.

. .. This was the same lion whom Androcles had helped – he had removed the thorn that had somehow got stuck in its paw – while he had spent his days back in the jungle.

The crowds were tempestuous with excitement to see the flight.

Androcles stood in the arena waiting for imminent death in the shape of a fierce lion.

As the lion came roaring out of its confines, the spectators went wild and Androcles’s heart hammered against his chest. But lo! The lion, instead of pouncing at Androcles, crouched at his feet and began licking him fondly. And Androcles, overcome with happiness, threw his arms around its neck. Wide-eyed in amazement, like everyone Androcles’s power over itself.

This was the same lion whom Androcles had helped – he had removed the thorn that had somehow got stuck in its paw – when he was living.

Introduction

Story writing is an ancient art form that has been used to entertain, educate, and inform people for centuries. It is a way to share experiences and feelings and to let people know about different cultures and ways of life.

There are many different types of stories, including folktales, legends, myths, fairy tales, short stories, epics, historical fiction, fantasy novels, science fiction books, crime-fiction novels, and autobiographies. Sometimes the same type of story can be told with different subgenres which are stories with distinct features or characteristics. For example, a short story might be non-science fiction instead of science fiction (and it would not necessarily be shorter).

Types of Stories

Fairytales are very common in folklore. They feature characters with magical abilities, like fairies and dwarves, who often grant wishes to the protagonist (the main character). They tend to be fairly simple, not containing much or any violence. The Brothers Grimm famously collected fairy tales that had been passed down through the generations; these are some of the most common fairy tales.

Legends are another type of story that is passed down through generations. They often tell about historical events, but they are not strictly accurate history books. They may contain supernatural elements like gods and monsters, which might help explain natural phenomena. A legend usually takes place over a long period of time involving many characters.

Myths are like legends, but they are usually about gods or heroes. They often explain the origin of things, like why the sun shines or how rivers were formed. Myths usually have a moral lesson to teach.

Epics are long stories that tell the history of a people or a country. They can be very detailed and may be written in poetry or prose. They often have a moral message that teaches about the culture of the people who tell the epic.

Historical fiction is a type of novel that is based on real events, but it is not strictly factual. The author may take some liberties with the facts in order to make a more interesting story. Historical fiction can help people learn about the past, especially if they are unfamiliar with some of the historical events.

Science fiction novels are stories that take place in a world that includes new technology or futuristic inventions. They may include aliens or robots, and they often focus on possible changes to society as a result of these technologies. Science fiction books are usually set in the future.

Crime fiction novels are also known as mysteries or detective stories. In them, a crime is committed and it must be solved by a detective. The reader tries to solve the mystery along with the detective until they find out who committed the crime at the end of the book. The crimes can include poisonings, robberies, or even murders.

These are all very common types of stories. Many other varieties of stories exist as well, such as those contained in comic books and graphic novels. There are also many subgenres of the types of stories that have been mentioned above. For example, fairytales can be about princesses or animals.

The story is a write-up in which one explains any event or creates a fictional event that leads to a series of events followed by a conclusion. 

The importance of stories is overlooked sometimes but the story is a work of art that can inspire readers as it stimulates their imagination and allows them to put themselves in the character’s shoes.

Elements of Story Writing- 

Setting-   

The setting defines where and when the event took place. It states the geographical location, time( past, present or future) and where the character stands culturally and socially. A good setting is written keeping the five senses in mind -Sight, smell, taste, feel and sound. The reader should be teleported instantly to the place, where the author is trying to take them.

Characters-  

The characters are the lifeblood of any story. Any person, animal or anything which can be personified are known as the character of the story. There could be one main character or more, it depends upon the author. The reader views the story from the character’s viewpoint. 

The plot is an organised pattern or sequence of events that make up a story. It is the spine of the story which supports all the actions from and around the characters.  

There are five parts of a plot- 

Exposition- Introduction; characters, setting and conflict (problem) are introduced.

Rising Action- Events that occur due to the main conflict.

Climax- Climax is the part of the story that has the highest point of tension and drama.

Falling Action- This is where the conflict eases and the character starts resolving the issue.

Resolution- This is where the conflict is resolved and all the loose ends are tied up together.

Conflict- 

Conflict is a struggle between the two opposite sides in a story. This is a problem or a challenge around which the plot is based. It forms the main structure of the plot. Conflict can be external and internal. External conflict is created by any outside force, and internal conflict is inside the character’s mind. 

The theme of the story is the central idea of the story which the author is trying to convey to the reader. It is the lesson the reader learns after reading the story. 

Readers have to sometimes try to see the big message that the writer is trying to give by showing the characters actions or ways of thinking.

Tips on Writing a Good Story-

Develop the Characters- Character development is an integral part of any good story. The characters should have depth in them so that the audience can connect with them. The real reason that Spiderman comics are so famous is that the young audience could connect with that character. So to better develop your characters, read more and observe people around you so that your characters can be relatable which would amount to a good story. 

Choose the Setting Carefully - Setting plays an important part in a story and it has wide implications on almost every part of the story. So choose the setting of the story carefully. For example, a story about a black girl becoming the CEO of a company would be different if the setting is in 1995 or the present day. This is because, in the earlier days, racism was much more widespread than it is today. So the girl would have to go through more challenges to become CEO in 1995 compared to today. Hence, setting has a high influence on the story.

Create an Outline of the Plot before Writing- Creating an outline plot or the gist of the story before writing is useful because it helps in connecting ideas in the story and knowing about plot holes before beginning to write the story.

Incorporate dialogues that reveal a Character's Thoughts- Telling about the character’s thoughts makes the story interesting and tells the reader what motivates the character to do what they are doing and is good in driving the plot forward.

Make the Setting more Dynamic- Making the setting more dynamic by describing the scenes using the sensory details like sounds that are heard by the character or describing what they are seeing makes the story more engaging to the reader.

Build circumstances where the Character has to get out of his/her Comfort Zone- Building these types of circumstances makes the story more interesting to the reader because these circumstances can bring forth hidden qualities of the character which can be conveyed through the scene rather than explaining it. 

Choose the Ending Carefully- The ending of the story should be such that it fits with the story meaning that it does not look out of place and leaves an impression in the mind of the reader. Almost all good stories provoke an emotional response when they are finished so the ending should not look random or out of the box.

1. Is it compulsory to add adverse situations in the story?

No not really unless it fits into the plot. Creating adverse situations just for the sake of it does not make the story more compelling rather it makes the story haphazard. Just like life, a story should have different types of circumstances which the character has to encounter while moving forward.

2. How much backstory should be added to make the story more appealing?

Background story about the characters make the story more appealing to the readers and help them understand the character and his/her actions and motivations but emphasis must be placed that too much backstory can take the focus out of the main context and make the plot deviate.

What is story writing?

1 . Develop the following hints into story writing.

Hints:  The king of Scotland was defeated six times——hid in a cave and saw a spider trying to climb up to the roof of the cave the spider fell six times and then succeeded- the king was encouraged – tried again to defeat his enemies and succeeded.

Robert Bruce, the king of Scotland was defeated six times on the battlefield. His enemies occupied his kingdom. He went away from his kingdom and hid in a cave. There he saw a spider trying hard to climb up the ceiling. But it fell Six times but did not give up his efforts. As a result, it ultimately succeeded. At this, the frustrated king was greatly encouraged, and said to himself, If the spider can succeed?” He then reaches the ceiling on the seventh attempt, why not resolved to fight his enemies again to take an act of sweet revenge? He collected and went to the battlefield. He fought with renewed vigour his arm and energy and ultimately succeeded.

Instantly the monkeys took the caps off their heads and threw them on the ground. The cap seller picked the caps up and took his way to the fair.

3. Get the following hints and make a story writing in about 150 words. Give a title to your story.

[Hints:   A snake with two heads—–one of the heads with no eyes—–the blind head wished to lead the Snake——the snake agreed —– fell into a pit and died.]

Once there was a snake that had two heads at its ends. One of the heads had eyes while the other had none.  The snake followed the head that had eyes. The blind head also wished that the snake should follow it.  But the snake did not agree to do so. This made the blind head truly angry. Once the snake was passing by a tree. The blind head coiled around the trunk of the tree. So, the snake could not proceed any further. At last, finding no other alternative, the snake agreed to follow the blind head. Now the blind head began to lead the snake. On the way, there was a very deep pit. But the blind head could not see it. So, the snake fell into the pit and died.

4. Study the following hints and develop them into a story (within 120 words). Add a title to it :

[Hints : A woodcutter’s axe falls into a river-becomes very unhappy the River-God brings him a golden axe, a silver axe, and a steel axe one after another-the wood-cutter takes his own steel axe-the River-God rewards him with all the three.]

 King Solomon was very famous for his wisdom. The Queen of Sheba wanted to test it. Once she was invited by the King to his kingdom. The clever queen brought two garlands of flowers one real and the other artificial. But they looked alike. She went to King Solomon’s kingdom and asked him to pick up the garland of real flowers. The king was greatly puzzled. Then he hit upon an idea. The king asked his men to open the windows. When they were opened, bees flew into the room and sat on the garland of real flowers making the task easy for him. The Queen was deeply impressed with the King’s wisdom.

6. Develop the following Hints into a story:

[Hints:-  Lord Buddha appointed a day for the collection of alms —–devotees brought him gifts—rich men came with their precious Gifts——-came an old and poor woman in a pomegranate——it was hardly eaten by her——Lord accepted it both hands coming from his seat.]

 Lord Buddha appointed a day for the collection of alms from his devotees. They brought him different gifts. The rich and affluent devotees came with their precious gifts to offer their living god. These devotees thought Lord Buddha would be more pleased with their precious gifts than the ordinary ones given by others. Then an old and very poor devotee appeared there. She was so poor that she had no capacity to buy Lord Buddha any gift whatsoever. But the woman wanted to offer something to the spiritual giant. She had nothing but a pomegranate that she was eating. The old woman did not hesitate to offer the half-eaten pomegranate to her master. Lord Buddha was pleased with the poor woman’s great sacrifice and true devotion. She wanted to offer everything she had. The great master, therefore, accepted the offer with both hands coming down from his seat.

Moral: An ordinary devoted offering is more important than a precious one.

There was a tiger. He was very cruel in his youth. He was a man-eater. In his old age he became very weak He could no longer hunt down any animal. So he suffered much for want of food. He had a gold bangle in his possession. He sat in an open place in the forest with that bangle. There was a road along that open place. When the tiger saw any man passing by he said to him, “Brother, here is a good bangle.

I wish to give it to you. Don’t fear. I am old and infirm now. I now pray to God five times a day and do other religious acts. This bangle is useless to me. It will be useful to you. Don’t fear, come to me and take this. A man was passing by the way. He was simple and religious-minded. So, he believed the tiger. He thought that he would help a poor man with that gold. He went near the tiger and was about to receive the bangle. The wicked tiger caught him by the neck and killed him.

10. Develop the following outlines into a complete story. Add a title to it (within 120 words):

[Hints:  A hot summer day —–a crow became thirsty—- – found water nowhere saw ajar—- – flew to it could not reach the water hit upon a plan —— dropped pebbles into the jar —- water came up—–drank.]

 One day it was very hot. A crow was very thirsty. He went out in search of water. He flew out here and there. At last, he saw a water pot. He flew to that pot. But he found that the water in it was at the bottom of the pot. He tried again and again but could not reach the water with his beak. As a result, he became sad but the crow was very clever. After some time, he found some pieces of stone at a small distance. He carried them all to the water one by one. He then dropped the stones into the pot until the water rose to its brim. Then he drank water and satisfied his thirst.

11. Develop the following outlines into a complete story.

Hints:  A dog was crossing a river with a morsel—– of meat in his mouth—–he saw a bigger piece of meat in the water—-so he dropped what he had—- to catch at what was a shadow and lost both.

One day a dog stole a morsel of meat from a butcher’s shop. He was awfully glad to have it and thought of a hearty meal at home that evening. With the piece of meat in his mouth he proceeded toward his home. On his way home he had to cross a river. There was a narrow plank across it. As he was going across the plank, he looked down and saw his own image reflected in the water. He took it for another dog with a bigger piece of meat.

“Ah. there is another dog with a bigger piece of meat!” he said to himself and added, “If l can take that piece of meat away from him, I shall have a hearty meal also n the morning. I must have that piece at any cost. So, thinking, he rushed at his own shadow to catch the piece of meat reflected in the water. Instantly. he fell into the river and lost his own piece of meat. Thus, being led by greed, he had to lose what he already had.

12. Develop the following hints into a story and add a title to it:

Hints : Two women quarrel over a child — each claims it as her own —they come to a wise judge—- he hears the dispute——judge’s order to cut the child into two halves ——-one gives up the claim and says, “Don’t cut the child”——- the other silent—–judge decided in favor of the former.

 Once upon a time, two women quarreled over a child. Each claimed it as her own failing to decide the matter between themselves they went to a judge noted for his wisdom. They told the judge about the bone of contention. The judge thought over the dispute for some time, and then gravely said to the executioner, “Cut the child into two halves and give one half to each woman”. No sooner had the judge given his verdict than one of the women cried out to the judge, “Please revoke your judgment. I’ m giving up my claim. Give the child to the other woman, please.” The other woman kept silent all the time. She seemed satisfied with the verdict. The judge could now make out who the real mother was. He gave away the child to the woman who demurred at the judgment.

The Carter and Hercules

13. Develop the following hints into a story. Give the story a title :

Hints : A carter drives along a muddy road— the wheels of his cart sink into the mud—-the carter whips the bullocks in vain—– prays to Hercules to come to his help——Hercules comes and asks him to put his shoulder to the wheels—- the cart moves.

 One day a carter drove his bullock cart along the muddy village road. Suddenly the wheels of the cart sank into the mud. The mud was so deep and sticky that the bullocks could not pull them out the cart came to a standstill. The carter whipped the bullocks to no effect. He felt helpless and prayed to Hercules to come to his help. Hercules appeared before him. He told Carter to put his shoulder on one of the wheels to help the bullocks to pull out the cart. The cart moved out of the muddy rut. Hercules said to carter, “Don’t call for my help until you’ve done all you can to help yourself ”. He then made it into the air.

The Wind and the Sun

14. Attempt story writing with the following hints. Give a title :

Hints:  A quarrel between the North Wind and the Sun over which was the stronger of the two—–a traveler was coming down the road —-agreed that the one that could take off the man’s cloak was the stronger ——the Wind began to blow but the traveler wrapped his cloak around him——-when the wind gave up, the sun started his work——the traveler grew warmer and began to loosen his cloak and sat down in the shade of a tree and fanned himself.

The North Wind and the Sun once had a dispute about which was the stronger. Suddenly they saw a traveler coming down the road. So, they agreed that the one that could take off the man’s cloak was the stronger. First, the Wind began to blow an icy blast but the harder he blew the more closely did the traveler wrap his cloak around him. The Wind was not strong enough to tear off the man’s cloak. At last, the Wind gave up in disgust. Next was the Sun’s turn and he drove away all the heavy rain clouds. Then he began to shine down upon the traveler with such power that the traveler rushed to the wood nearby to take some rest. In the shade of a tree, He sat down and fanned himself. So, the disputes ended and the Sun became the winner. 

Moral:  Persuasion is better than Force.

15. Develop the following outline into a story. Give the story a title :

Hints :   [A lot of mice in a house—–the master of the house brings a cat—the mice are in difficulty they hold a meeting—- one of them proposes to tie a bell —-round the cat’s neck “Who is to bell the cat ?”]

A lot of mice lived in the house. They were making a lot of trouble. The master of the house made a plan to get rid of it. He brought a cat to kill the mice. The mice were in great difficulty. They could not move freely as before. They held a meeting to discuss the matter and find a way to come out of the danger. Several proposals were made. But none was so good. At last, a young mouse rose to speak.

He said., “T have hit upon a good plan. Let us tie a bell around the cat’s neck. Then we shall hear him coming and hide in time.” All the mice thanked the young mouse for his plan. 16. Get the story writing with the following outline. Add a title :

Hints:   A deceitful shopkeeper sells weight—— a boy asks why—–he and replies, “You have to carry less —–he pays less—–counting less is the answer to why.

Once a shopkeeper used to sell goods weighing less than normal. But the price was fixed. Hectometers endured to the last limit of their capabilities. He cheated them every now and then arrogantly and short-tempered young talk shouted at him. Months passed by. Old customers boycotted him. And his new ones also stopped buying from him. Man is a creature of habit. So, the fewer the customers were, the more was the habit undying. One day a boy stood protesting vehemently when he saw this dishonest deal. “Why are you not keeping your balance equal? , he cried aloud. He said to himself, “If it was elsewhere he would be roughed up.” The shopkeeper retorted, ‘You have not much to carry.” The angry boy threw away the remark. “I am giving them the price to balance the underweight. It is easier to count for you.”

A King and his Servants   

17. Develop the story writing with the following hints into a story. Give the story a title :

Hints : The diamond-set gold ring vanishes one day—- the king doubts the pilferer among the servants—— the adverse situation calls for action—– none of the servants admits to guilt—- the King gives each servant a stick——he warns that one who has robbed would have his stick two inches taller—-the thief is exposed.

One day the king discovered that his gold ring studded with diamond was out of sight. He ransacked the valuables from time to time in the safe because he was unfortunate enough to find them nowhere. Then the king Summoned all his servants and behaved well as if nothing had happened. He asked them casually, ‘Do you know about a mere ring? “No”, said all in one, “Our eyes didn’t fall upon it”. The king hit upon a plan that took effect the next day. He invoked all of them to see him after lunch None of them could turn down the royal order.

They inclined their ear to hear. “I am giving each of you a stick. He who is guilty of the deed of plundering the ring will see his stick increase by two inches overnight. Tomorrow you will return the sticks to me”. The pilferer of the ring cut the stick away by two inches that night. The next morning, they submitted the sticks to the same size except one. The king caught his breath until the thief was detected. But he had no guilty conscience. So, the king resorted to a trick.

The quarrel between Limbs and Belly

18. Develop a story writing with the following hints into a story. Give a suitable title :

Hints:  Quarrelled between the limbs and  the belly -limbs work but the belly only received -all the limbs  stopped working -body start -limbs weekend and lost strength -they all learned a lesson of co-operation

Once there was a quarrel between the Limbs and the Belly. After working for many years there grew a fit of jealousy between the limbs and the belly. The limbs of our body noticed that all time they had worked, and the Belly only digested the result. So, one day all the limbs of our body decided to stop their work because they thought the belly should also come with them to work. But the belly did not do anything else it only began to wait and watch. So, when all the limbs stopped their work, our body started to decline, and the body also became weakened and lost strength. When the body became weakened and lost its strength, all the limbs of our body understood one thing that they should do all their work together. And from that time, they learned a lesson of co-operation.  

Moral: Co-operation helps us to be united and strong.

The embarrassment of a Forgetful Man

19. Write a story with the help of the following hints :

Hints :-  a forgetful man—– thinks of inviting his friends to dinner— arranges varieties of dishes and waits for his friends to come—- none arrives —-wonders—- what the cause might be—- draws a drawer—- in his writing desk—–finds the bunches of invitation letters undelivered.

There lived a man called Vola Babu. He was so-called due to his forgetful nature. Once he decided to invite all his friends to dinner at his house. On that very day, he was very busy. He bought good fish, mutton, and vegetables. He asked his cook to prepare a variety of dishes. All those items were mouth-watering afternoon Vola Babu was ready to indeed. From the welcome guests. The afternoon became night, but nobody turned up. Vola Babu was very upset. He could not understand what went wrong. He then drew the drawer of his writing desk. The reason was revealed in no time. There were bunches of invitation letters. He had written those letters but forgotten to post any of them. His friends were not invited at all.

20. Attempt a story writing (within 100 words)using the given hints. Give a title to the story:

Hints :-  a soldier prisoner of war for some years—– war ends returns— home sees– a bird seller on the way buys all the birds and sets them free.

Once a soldier was caught by the enemy force on the battlefield. They put him in the prison for some years. When the war came to an end, all the war prisoners including the soldier were freed. On his way home, the soldier came across a bird seller. The seller was selling birds in cages. Seeing the caged birds the soldier’s heart writhed in pain. He too had experienced the pangs of captivity. So he approached the bird seller and bought all the birds from him. Then he opened the doors of the cages one after another and set all the birds free.

21. Develop the following hints into a story. Give the title to this story writing :

Hints:  Three artist participants in a contest ——–one draws Flowers ——–bees attracted to sit on it ———-the second paints a fruit ——–it Lures an ox ——–the third pictures a curtain ——–who wins the prize.

The Three Artists

Once three prominent artists were in a competition hosted by the mayor of the town. On the appointed day, the bell rang to declare the hour of inspection. All sat and drew in an hour with their equipment. The first artist worth mentioning carefully sketched a bucket of Flowers. It was so charming that bees were flying to sit on it and suck honey. The second is depicted with wrapped tension a pineapple. The fruit was like enough to tempt an ox from afar. The third concentrated on picturing a gorgeous curtain. The curtain was live enough to deserve everyone’s praise. Of the paintings in galore the judges were befooled to lift the curtain which was not real but seemingly real. The third artist indeed was entitled to win the first prize as judges were made the moment’s fools. 

An awful Journey

22. Write a story within 100 words using the given hints. Give a title to the story writing: [ Page 7 ; Ex 7 ; Class 9 ]

[Hints:  returning from the educational excursion by bus-night Journey—sudden breakdown-tires punctured-had to wait for two hours at a lonely place-tires fixed-back home.]

We had gone on an educational trip to Bishnupur by bus. Our respected teachers and students from a different classes of our school were part of this educational trip. We had a lovely moment there. It was fixed we would make our return journey at night from there. We knew that we had to be very careful as there we came across a long, lonely road through which our bus would come back. There were only paddy fields and sometimes there were tall Sal trees standing in a line on both sides of that road. We started from there. After some time, when our bus was in the middle of our journey, its tire got suddenly punctured.

So, it could not move and stood in the middle of that lonely, awful road. The driver and the conductor engaged themselves to replace the tire as soon as possible. The place was very lonely and the big Sal trees stood like giants on both sides of the road. We got down from the bus and We felt if we cried loudly for help if anything bad happened, none could hear us, and none would come to rescue us. It was a deep dark night. We became very scared. However, we had to wait two hours in that lonely place. After the tire got fixed, we started again and came back home safely.

When you are writing something down with a pen, you are stimulating a collection of cells in the base of your brain known as Reticular Activating System (RAS).             

An account of someone?s life written by that person else is called a Biography.            

An account of a person?s life written by that person himself/herself is known an Autobiography.

In this lesson you can learn to communicate in complete thoughts for different purposes. At the beginning, you may still write in short, literal, choppy sentences but as you progress through the year, you learn to write more detailed essays and stories to communicate what you are learning. To help yourself learn how to write events in a story for a more flowing account, you can think of the story as a recipe. Using story maps and plot planners, you gain proficiency in using literary devices to spin tales fascinate readers with interesting details.             

The outline of a story is the basic framework of a story. It is often just a skeleton outline. It shows us some of main facts of the story and tells in brief what the story is like. We have to fill in all the details relevant to story and thus make up a readable story.  

IMPORTANT HINTS          

The following few hints will tell you how to build up a story from a given outline:

1. Read the given outline carefully. Note all the points. Follow as strictly as possible the sketch provided.

2. Be careful to connect the points given in the outline naturally, so that the whole will read well as a connected piece of good composition.

3. You must use your imagination in filling the details of action, gesture and conversation that should connect one point with the next.                      

4. Wherever possible, introduce dialogue or conversation: but be careful to make it natural and interesting.

5. The conclusion or ending of a story should be striking and interesting. 

6. If you are asked to give a title or heading to the story you may name it (i) after the main character, object or incident of the story, or (ii) after a proverb or well-known quotation illustrated by the story.

What is Story Writing?

A story can be a description of unreal or real events starting from character introductions leading to the plot unfolding in a setting, finally concluded by the climax. A story can be written, told, or executed in visual form like in movies. Based on the plot, a story can have various genres like comedy, horror, and action.

Story writing refers to the technique or process of narrating a narrative where the writer sets forth a plot that is driven by a situation leading to the main problem, followed by finding the solution to the problem, and finally, the climax that deals with the outcome of the solution. 

In the Class 9 CBSE curriculum stories can enhance student's vocabulary, creativity, and language skills that can turn into a hobby and later on a potential writer. Students or anyone can write a well-knitted story once they know the components as well as the format of the story.

Structure of Story Writing 

There is no specific format for story writing but from the exam’s perspective, the basic structure has to be followed.

Components of Story Writing 

One needs to be aware of the components of the story writing, to write a well-knitted and engaging story.

  • Characters: There is no story without its character, although the number of characters can vary from single to multiple based on the plot of the story. The character traits and behavior and their progression throughout the story depend on the story plot. A character’s personality might remain constant or get completely changed at the end.
  • ‍ Setting: The setting in story writing refers to the place where the story starts and the characters are based on depending on the writer’s imagination. The place can exist in real life or can totally be fictional. It can include a forest, a house, or a room.
  • ‍ Plot: A plot refers to what the writer has written about or what the written story consists of. It is usually considered the journey of characters starting with the introduction, events leading to the problems, followed by finding the solution, then the climax, and the ending of the journey on the decided note.
  • ‍ Theme: The theme refers to the main idea behind the story, the main message the writer wants to convey via a story. The most common theme used by the scriptwriters is revenge. For example, you might have seen Avengers: Endgame and the main theme behind the movie was courage, endurance, and teamwork. ‍
  • Conflict: The conflict is the main situation where usually the protagonist faces a problem that completely changes them leading to the final ending. For example, the moment the protagonist comes to know about the betrayal they embark on their journey to take revenge.

Examples of Story Writing

You are Ajay. You have forgotten to do your homework and without a legitimate excuse, you’re sure to get punished by the teacher. In an attempt to make an excuse, you have decided to come up with an elaborate story to make the teacher believe your excuse or at the very least have a good laugh. Use any of the word prompts given in the box below to help you write your ruse. Write the story in about 100-120 words.

The Flying Elephant and My Homework

I’m sorry ma’am, I couldn’t do my homework because … I was on my way back from school yesterday thinking about all the chores and homework I have to do. Then suddenly, my bicycle got a flat tire and skidded down a slope. I was lucky I didn’t have a bad fall. So I was dragging my bicycle along and on the way, I saw two elephants and their mahouts training. It was exciting to see them and somehow these elephants looked special.

The first elephant started flapping his ears and before you know it, it got bigger and bigger and he started flying. I asked them if they could drop me, and they agreed to make me ride the flying elephant but with one condition, I had to feed the elephant the next day. Feeling ecstatic, I just said, ‘Yes’.

I was over the moon when the elephant started flying. It buzzed through all the traffic and I reached home within minutes. I thanked the mahouts and dashed into the house to tell my story. After dinner, I completed my homework and decided to hit the sack.

In the morning, a loud trumpet woke me up. I saw that the elephant was back and made me recall what I promised to the mahout. I got a couple of snacks from the fridge and offered them to the elephant but the elephant wouldn’t eat anything. Then all of a sudden, the elephant raised his trunk and started sucking in air like a vacuum, and all the leaves in the garden and the paper from all the books in our library flew straight into the elephant’s mouth. The mahout mentioned that his elephant liked the paper. After eating all the paper it flew off with the mahout.

I went back in to get ready for school and I realized that my homework was gone and I couldn’t write a new one because the elephant had eaten all the papers in my house.

You had been preparing for an interview for the last few days. You faced the interview and succeeded. Write the story in 100-120 words (Take help from the outline given) from your preparation to your success. Outline: Interview for the post of cub reporter—facing interview board—answering questions with well-prepared arguments—happy to be accepted and eager to serve.

My First Job

I was scared but eager to land my first job as a cub reporter in a children’s newspaper. I dressed carefully for the interview and arrived on time. On the threshold itself, my throat felt dry and my hands shook slightly as I turned the door knob. But when the interview board of six people welcomed me warmly, my fears vanished. I felt composed as I was well prepared.

The board went through my file of write-ups. They invited me to join a group discussion on whether schools should give homework. I argued vehemently in favor, countering the board’s stock suggestions about burdening children, making parents into homework writing machines, and children inattentive in class. The Board seemed satisfied with my refutations in favor of giving homework.

In the end, I felt a palpable air of satisfaction all around. Thus, when their final approval accepting me as a cub reporter arrived, I was ready to take off on my new assignment.

Techniques to Follow For Story Writing

Story writing is an art. It is the oldest form of written composition. It is a work of imagination that should be clear and easily intelligible. A short story is meant to be read in a single sitting and therefore it should be as direct and brief as possible.

  • Developing and writing a good story needs the art of narration. You have to narrate the incidents in a sequential order leading to the conclusion.
  • You should follow the basic theme as given in the input or introductory lines. You are not supposed to invent new and different themes.
  • Within the given limits, students are left with enough space to give expression to their creative talents.
  • The beginning and the concluding lines must support the main part of the events described in the story.
