Google to revoke major digital security certificates

Updated, Monday, July 1: This article has been updated to include information regarding Mozilla’s role in highlighting issues with Entrust.

An announcement from the Google Chrome Security Team has dropped what can only be described as a security and privacy bombshell for the 3.45 billion users of the Chrome browser. From November 1, the world’s most-used web browser will no longer trust digital certificates issued by Entrust, one of the world’s most-used certificate authorities. How widespread are Entrust digital security certificates? Customers include Chase Bank, Dell, Ernst & Young, Mastercard, and Merrill Lynch, not to mention governments worldwide.

Google To Revoke Trust In Entrust Digital Certificates

The June 27 announcement by Google pulls no punches as it justifies the decision to revoke Transport Layer Security certificates issued by Entrust and AffirmTrust, acquired by Entrust in 2016, on the grounds of prioritizing the security and privacy of Chrome’s users, stating “we are unwilling to compromise on these values.” This is a serious deal, a very serious deal, as these certificate authorities act as the foundation of the encrypted connections that users rely upon between their web browser and the internet.

Referring to the Chrome Root Program Policy , last updated in January, Google said that such certificates must provide value to Chrome users that “exceeds the risk of their continued inclusion.” That is no longer the case, according to the Chrome Security Team, which explains that, across recent years, the behavior of Entrust in responding to publicly disclosed incidents has fallen short of its expectations. Google stated this has “eroded confidence in their competence, reliability, and integrity as a publicly-trusted CA Owner.”

Mozilla Lists Entrust Bugs, Leads To Lengthy Report In Response

Google isn’t the only browser business to have problems with Entrust, Mozilla has been very vocal in recent months regarding incidents with the certificate authority. Indeed, it was the Firefox browser developer complaints about such incidents between March and May that led to a lengthy and detailed response from Entrust by way of a report to the Mozilla community published on June 7.

Biden Says Supreme Court Immunity Ruling Sets ‘Dangerous Precedent,’ In Brief Remarks

Monday, july 1 . russia’s war on ukraine: news and information from ukraine, billionaire barry diller in potential takeover talks with paramount following skydance’s failed bid, report says.

In the report’s executive summary, Entrust, a certificate authority for more than two decades, admitted that the incidents were “unnecessary and based on our own mistakes or misjudgments” and, as such, fell short of the standards the organization expected of itself. “We have thoughtfully considered the community’s questions and comments, and this input is reflected in our plans,” the report stated. Those plans included adding strategic compliance support with the CA/Browser forum, broadening Entrust participation. Compliance governance to be addressed by way of a “cross-functional change control board” that would review policies and key decisions, as well as filling the gaps in change control processes so as to minimize the opportunity for errors. Incident response and revocation policies would also reviewed and clarified, Entrust stated.

The June 7 report concluded that “We have identified the necessary resources and have support at the highest levels of our organization to ensure accountability and execution on these plans.”

The Entrust Response To The CA/B Forum And Google

In a June 21 posting to the Certification Authority Browser Forum , Entrust president of digital security solutions, Bhagwat Swaroop, stated that some recent incidents “did not get reported and communicated in the appropriate way with the CA/B forum,” and added that “Our initial stance of not revoking the impacted certificates was incorrect.” Swaroop continued to state that none of the “lapses” were malicious or made with ill-intent: “As a global CA we must walk a tightrope in balancing the requirements of the root programs and subscriber needs, especially for critical infrastructure. In some cases, we did not strike the right balance.” Swaroop promised that Entrust is committed to making lasting changes, both organizational and cultural, to begin to regain the trust of the root programs and the community.

Entrust Disappointed With The Google Chrome Root Program Decision

It appears that this commitment has come too late as far as Google is concerned. An Entrust spokesperson told The Stack that “The decision by the Chrome Root Program comes as a disappointment to us as a long-term member of the CA/B Forum community. We are committed to the public TLS certificate business and are working on plans to provide continuity to our customers.”

The Entrust spokesperson also confirmed that the decision by the Chrome Root Program does not impact upon its Verified Mark Certificates, nor code-signing and digital signing, or private certificate offerings.

What This Means To Google Chrome Users

While Entrust and AffirmTrust TLS server authentication certificates that were signed on or before October 31 will continue to be valid until their expiration date, effective November 1 Chrome 127 and later, on Android, ChromeOS, Linux, macOS and Windows platforms will cease to be trusted and blocked. Users will see a ‘connection not private’ dialog when attempting to connect to any site using a blocked certificate, warning that the site could be trying to steal personal or financial information.

Connection not private warning for Chrome users

Google has recommended that website operators should transition to another CA Owner as soon as possible. Although Google conceded that the impact of blocking certificates could be delayed by operators installing a new Entrust TLS certificate before the November 1 deadline, it warned that “website operators will inevitably need to collect and install a new TLS certificate from one of the many other CAs included in the Chrome Root Store.”

It should be pointed out that, according to Google, users will still be able to manually trust root certificates in order to maintain functionality even after the October 31 cut-off date. “Should a Chrome user or enterprise explicitly trust any of the above certificates on a platform and version of Chrome relying on the Chrome Root Store,” Google stated, for example where explicit trust is conveyed through a Group Policy Object on Windows, the constraints “will be overridden and certificates will function as they do today.”

Preview of UNFPA Sudan Emergency Situation Report #14.docx-4.pdf

KEY UPDATES

Escalation in Humanitarian Crisis: The security situation across Sudan remains highly volatile, with heavy clashes reported in Khartoum, Aj Jazirah, North Darfur, Sennar, West Kordofan, and North Kordofan states. These conflicts have severe implications for civilian safety and humanitarian operations. Since the outbreak of conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in mid-April 2023, over 11 million people have been displaced inside and outside Sudan. Sudan is now experiencing one of the world's most severe humanitarian crises, hosting 13% of all internally displaced people (IDP) globally, marking the largest displacement crisis worldwide. This extensive displacement has heightened risks in maternal and child health, with an estimated 50,000 live births expected in the next three months and 1.2 million pregnant and breastfeeding women facing acute malnutrition this year.

Armed Clashes in Sennar State: On 25 June 2024, armed clashes erupted between SAF and the RSF in Jebel Moya village and Sennar locality in Sennar state. Approximately 327 households were displaced within Sennar and Sinja localities. On 29 June 2024, clashes continued to spread across the state, including Sinja town, the Military HQ, and surrounding neighborhoods. Approximately 55,440 individuals were displaced from Sinja town and neighboring villages, as well as from Abu Hujar and Ad Dali localities. Around 50,000 individuals from Sinja and Abu Hujar localities were displaced to Ar Rahad locality, Gedaref, while 5,000 were displaced to Ed Damazine locality, Blue Nile. Additionally, 440 individuals were displaced across Aj Jabalain locality, White Nile. On 1 July 2024, an additional 62,000 people fled to Ar Rahad in Gedaref, Ed Damazine in Blue Nile, and Kassala state due to increased security concerns.

Escalating Crisis in Al Fasher: The humanitarian situation for an estimated 800,000 civilians in Al Fasher and surrounding areas has severely deteriorated following the armed clashes between SAF and the RSF on 10 May 2024. Since 20 May, close to 130,000 people have been displaced in Al Fasher locality, according to IOM reports . In addition, between 1 and 23 June 2024, at least an additional 12,900 people were displaced in Al Fasher locality due to the ongoing clashes. However, these figures are likely underestimated due to communications disruptions and access challenges. Health partners report that at least 700 civilians have been injured and 85 people have been killed during the armed clashes since 10 May. Al Fasher maternity Hospital, the only working hospital in the state, is critically low on supplies and urgently needs restocking. Humanitarian access into Al Fasher has been severely constrained since the disruption of the Kosti supply route in mid-December 2023. This dire situation highlights the urgent need for increased humanitarian assistance and the swift restocking of medical supplies to address the escalating crisis.

Severe Food Insecurity and Nutritional Crisis - Fourteen months into the conflict, Sudan is facing the worst levels of acute food insecurity ever recorded by the IPC in the country. Over half of the population (25.6 million people) are facing acute levels of hunger , including more than 611,000 pregnant women. In the coming months the situation will only worsen: the rainy season, which will cut off communities and raise rates of disease, starts in June. Sudan is also entering the lean season, a time between harvests when food stocks traditionally run low.

The clock is ticking, edging Sudan’s pregnant women, mothers and children closer to famine. 8.5 million people (18 percent of the population) are on the verge of famine, including an estimated 203,000 pregnant women.

Mothers and children across Sudan are wasting away from hunger. The ongoing war has stripped them of everything they need to survive – food, medical support and shelter. They are also experiencing horrific violence. Of the 755,000 people already in famine conditions in 10 states of Sudan – including Greater Darfur (all five states), South and North Kordofan, Blue Nile, Al Jazirah, and Khartoum – 18,000 are pregnant women.

The situation has deteriorated rapidly since the last analysis in December 2024. The number of people facing acute hunger has risen by 45% - 17.7 million to 25.6 million. There are 3.6 million more people on the verge of famine – an increase of 74%. The number of people in famine conditions has gone from zero to 755,000.

Immediate and unfettered humanitarian access across conflict lines and borders, including Darfur, Al Jazirah, Khartoum, and Kordofan, is the only way to bring Sudan back from the brink. There must be a ceasefire and steps towards a lasting peace. There is no time to lose.

Allegations of Sexual Violence and Trafficking in Sudan: On 25 April, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict, Pramila Patten, and Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator, Joyce Msuya, issued a joint statement calling for increased international engagement to combat sexual violence against women and girls in Sudan. According to the statement, reports of sexual violence highlight the war's disproportionate impact on women and girls. Allegations of rape, forced marriages, sexual slavery, and trafficking of women and girls – particularly in Khartoum, Darfur, and Kordofan – continue to be recorded. Millions of civilians are especially at risk as they flee conflict areas in search of shelter both within Sudan and in neighboring countries. However, the true scale of this crisis remains unseen due to severe underreporting caused by stigma, fear of reprisals, and a lack of confidence in national institutions.

Influencers and popular podcasts fuel election disinformation among Black voters, report shows

At least 40 million Americans may be regularly targeted and fed disinformation within Black online spaces by a host of sources across social media, fueling false information around the election, according to a new report published Tuesday.

Touted as the first deep dive into understanding disinformation targeting Black America, the report, published by Onyx Impact , a nonprofit organization working to combat disinformation within the Black community, identified half a dozen core online networks “reaching or targeting” Black Americans online with false and misleading narratives.

Conservative commentators like Candace Owens are among the most influential distributors of false information, according to the report, followed by a variety of sources, such as platforms geared toward the Black manosphere, like the “Fresh and Fit” podcast. Some episodes of the show have outright challenged women’s intelligence and allowed guests to share false and harmful narratives without pushback.

The report identifies some platforms like the nationally syndicated radio show, “The Breakfast Club,” as a "gateway influencer” or an authentic online space that holds critical space for stemming the tide of disinformation. These platforms, however, are also often targets for “bad actors to introduce harmful narratives,” according to the report.

Three other effective sources of disinformation, the report notes, are extreme Black nativists and separatists, like Foundational Black Americans who don’t believe in the concept of pan-Africanism and have stressed that people who are not descendants of enslaved people should speak for or on behalf of Black Americans, as well as health skeptics such as Rizza Islam, an activist and self-proclaimed intellectual extremist, who has said without evidence that childhood vaccines “destroy the brain chemistry” and lead to autism and other disabilities. According to the CDC , this is not true. None of the other individuals or platforms listed above responded to requests for comment.

The report also identified foreign actors “that seek to influence U.S. political discourse,” like the digital media company African Stream.

African Stream denied spreading misinformation, adding that they “present an authentically African perspective.”

“We have a vigorous fact-checking process, which means work is checked by three different trained journalists three times before posting on our platforms,” the Nairobi-based company said in a statement, describing their work as a “Pan-African digital media platform covering affairs concerning Africans at home and in the diaspora.”

Onyx Impact found those six sources collectively have a potential reach of nearly 41 million Americans, adding that each represents spaces where skepticism, anti-Black rhetoric and deception of truth run rampant. For context, that figure is equivalent to nearly every Black person in the country, according to the latest census data.

Over four months, a team of researchers for Onyx Impact identified 2,500 online accounts creating, sharing or amplifying disinformation to Black communities. The researchers also held seven national focus groups of Black audiences to understand how those narratives were showing up in offline spaces. The point of the effort was to gauge the impact of the information, said the founder of Onyx Impact, Esosa Osa, an alumnus of the voting rights group Fair Fight.

Candace Owens on the set of "Candace" in 2022.

Constant repetition of false or misleading information, “no matter how kind of absurd that disinformation is,” said Osa, can be effective across audiences, regardless of income, education or class. “Disinformation works because the more times that we hear something, the more likely we are to believe that it is true,” she said.

Narratives with the highest reach and impact across the networks, the report says, include misleading narratives focused on promises that these networks say President Joe Biden has broken, civic engagement and issues that stoke division.

Earlier this year, for example, Owens tweeted without evidence that vaccines cause an “explosion” of childhood cancer. But experts, through data , have denied that any link exists. In another instance, Owens shared inaccurate information that the shooter that killed 21 people, including 19 children, at Robb Elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, in 2022 was transgender, an assertion that was based on the wrong photos of the shooter.

Critics have also repeatedly slammed the popular gossip site The Shade Room for being a hub for disinformation, particularly on issues related to Biden. The outlet once reported about a Biden-backed program to distribute “crack pipes” to promote health equity. The site ran with an article by The Washington Free Beacon, a conservative website. The post quickly went viral, and the White House called it “misleading and misinformed.” In reality, the program was harm-reduction program meant to reduce drug overdoses. The Shade Room corrected the information in a follow-up post and took the original post down, but for many , the misinformation had already spread further than the truth.

The Shade Room did not respond to a request for comment.

The report noted that “confronting the challenges created by misinformation” is “crucial to ensuring the health and stability of our democracy.”

When it is left unchecked, experts said, disinformation can have devastating effects on the most marginalized communities, including harming physical and mental health.

Timothy Welbeck, a civil rights attorney and director of the Center for Anti-Racism at Temple University, said disinformation presented as fact has the “heightened ability” to influence Black communities’ decision-making in ways never before seen, particularly less than five months from a presidential election.

“It can either encourage [voter] apathy or potentially encourage people to vote differently than they would have already,” Welbeck said, noting that Americans’ biggest issues, from the economy to Israel’s war with Hamas to federal judicial appointments, will greatly be affected by who becomes president in November — in his eyes, a direct byproduct of how successful disinformation continues to spread.

Onyx Impact offered strategic guidance in the report to those combating disinformation to engage with those platforms by identifying trusted messengers and discrediting bad actors. While there is no evidence that African Americans are more susceptible to disinformation than any other ethnic group, Osa said, consistent targeting of any group has a way of breaking through.

“Black voters are likely less susceptible to many disinformation narratives given their deserved higher levels of skepticism in institutions and government overall,” she said, “but just like other communities, when disinformation is targeted and comes from messengers with standing, it can be incredibly effective and dangerous.”

Polling shows that disinformation remains a concern for most Americans.

A national survey published this month by the media reform group Free Press found that 79% of adults in the U.S. worry that what they read online includes “fake” or “false” information with the deliberate goal to “confuse.” The poll of 3,000 people across the U.S. also found that 76% of respondents are concerned that they were reading misleading information online about the presidential election. Black Americans, in particular, are also disproportionately more likely to get their news from social media, the Free Press survey found.

Osa said there is nothing new about increased disinformation and misinformation ahead of recent presidential elections. In 2016, Russia set out to interfere with the election by spreading propaganda on social media, hacking into campaigns and probing state voter databases, according to a Senate report . In 2020, there were coordinated efforts to deter Black voters from going to the polls more systematically, including conservative activists’ making more than a thousand fake robocalls to deter Detroit voters, who are overwhelmingly Black, from voting by mail.

Today, however, Osa said, the way disinformation is presented to a population with outsize political power and influence continues to be more sophisticated. Black Americans are projected to account for 14% of eligible voters in November and have a higher turnout rate than Latino voters, despite making up a lower share of the U.S. population.

Recent outreach to Black voters by Biden and former President Donald Trump is evidence of an emphasis on capturing the demographic.

The latest NBC News poll found that 2 in 3 Black voters ages 18 to 49 support Biden, as well as 88% of older Black voters.

Trump, meanwhile, has garnered support from 1 in 4 young Black voters ahead of this year’s election and 6% of older Black voters, according to the NBC News poll, in an election in which even minor changes in voting patterns in battleground states could decide the race.

Anthony sells Trump merchandise outside a rally for former President Donald Trump at the Margate Hotel in Laconia, New Hampshire, on Jan. 22, 2024, the eve of the New Hampshire primary.

By comparison, in 2020, no less than 78% of Black voters chose Biden, according to exit polling data .

But not all experts believe disinformation efforts have substantial influence now or will have it in the future.

Deen Freelon, a presidential professor of communication at the University of Pennsylvania and an expert in digital politics, remains hesitant about overstating how deep misinformation runs within the Black community.

“It is incredibly difficult to draw a straight line between any kind of communication … and the kinds of attitudinal and behavioral changes that people would like communication to have,” he said. “It’s just very hard to change people’s minds and their behavior in substantial ways from what they’re already doing.”

However, Freelon acknowledged that even a slight change in behavior could tip the race to Biden or Trump.

“The vast majority of people who consume [disinformation] is a small group of people, but in a close election, a small group of people can be sufficient to, at least potentially, sway the election one way or the other,” he said.

CORRECTION (June 26, 2024, 12:17 a.m. ET): An earlier version of this article misclassified The Breakfast Club, according to the report's criteria. The report classifies it as a “gateway influencer,” not as an outright distributor of false information.

Hurricane Beryl hits Category 5, breaks record as earliest ever to hit max strength

web report kiosbank

Editor's note: This page reflects news on Hurricane Beryl from Monday, July 1. For the latest news on Hurricane Beryl , which is now a Category 5 storm, please follow USA TODAY's live updates on the storm for Tuesday, July 2 .

Hurricane Beryl became the earliest Category 5 hurricane on record Monday night when its winds increased to 160 mph as it barreled through the southeastern Caribbean, the National Hurricane Center said.

Beryl shatters the old record by more than two weeks — Hurricane Emily became a Category 5 on July 17, 2005. Forecasters fear that the historically busy hurricane season in 2005 could be repeated this year.

Hurricane hunter reconnaissance flights into the storm Monday found continued strengthening. As of 11 p.m. Monday, Beryl's winds had climbed from 155 mph to 160 mph — becoming a "potentially catastrophic category 5 hurricane," according to the hurricane center.

Beryl's central barometric pressure had dropped to 938 millibars but the hurricane center expects its Category 5 status to be brief, forecasting a steady decline in windspeed with the winds steadily declining.

The hurricane was about 510 miles east-southeast of Isla Beata in the Dominican Republic and traveling west-northwest at 22 mph, the hurricane center said. Its center was on track to move across the southeastern and central Caribbean Sea into Tuesday and is expected to pass near Jamaica on Wednesday.

Beryl is forecast to weaken after reaching Jamaica, according to the hurricane center, but it's expected to remain a hurricane in the northwestern Caribbean.

Beryl tore through the Windward Islands on Monday after making landfall on Grenada’s Carriacou Island as a Category 4 storm at 11:10 a.m., according to the hurricane center. The hurricane had 150 mph winds when its eye made landfall on Carriacou.

Power was out throughout Grenada and residents were advised to shelter in place as Beryl brought down power lines and tore away roofs. The last major hurricane to reach the country's shores was Ivan, which caused widespread devastation with winds of more than 135 mph in 2004.

The government of Jamaica has issued a hurricane warning for the island, according to the hurricane center.

From the island of St. Lucia south to Grenada, streets were littered with parts of trees and personal effects, the Associated Press reported. The lack of electricity and communications outages in the region made it difficult to get accurate reports on injuries and property damage.

The historic Beryl reached tropical storm status Friday before becoming a major hurricane Sunday as it raced toward the Caribbean with winds of 130 mph − a gain of 95 mph in just 42½ hours. Record-warm ocean temperatures led to rapid intensification, a phenomenon that occurs when a storm strengthens by at least 35 mph in a 24-hour period.

The storm became the earliest Category 4 hurricane on record and the first June major hurricane east of the Lesser Antilles. Beryl hit Category 4 status Sunday, but its winds decreased slightly overnight, making it a Category 3 storm Monday. It strengthened again early Monday.

Hurricane Beryl storm tracker: See latest details, projected path of Category 3 storm

Developments:

∎ At least one death was reported in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves said late Monday, adding that there may be more fatalities. Gonsalves noted the widespread devastation in the area with hundreds of homes and buildings damaged or destroyed.

∎ In a statement on Facebook, St. Lucia's Prime Minister Philip Pierre said that the island experienced "strong winds and torrential rains that resulted in flooding, land slippage and property destruction." He added that Beryl "could have been even more severe on our country but we were spared this time from possible disaster."

∎ Storm surge in the Windward Islands could reach 6 to 9 feet above normal tide levels and bring "large, destructive waves" to the coast, the National Hurricane Center said .

∎ Rainfall could cause flooding and is expected to dump 3 to 6 inches in Barbados and the Windward Islands. Up to 10 inches are possible in isolated locations, especially in the Grenadines.

∎ After Beryl's center moves across the Windward Islands on Monday, the storm will cross the southeastern and central Caribbean Sea late Monday through Wednesday.

How Beryl grew: Hurricane Beryl, super-charged by warm seas, stuns experts

Hurricane Beryl's quick emergence a 'massive warning sign'

An explosive increase in wind speeds, a record for the strongest hurricane this early in the season. Those are ominous signs of what weather experts see as danger ahead in what is expected to be a hyperactive season for major storms.

Hurricane Beryl's stunning transformation from a tropical depression to a major hurricane in less than 42 hours has meteorologists reaching out for superlatives and issuing warnings. This is only the seventh time such a quick rise in category has occurred with an Atlantic storm, and never before had it happened before Sept. 1, the heart of the hurricane season.

"Buckle up. It could be a challenging few months ahead," said chief science officer Steve Bowen of Gallagher Re, a reinsurance firm. "This is a massive warning sign for the rest of the season."

Could Hurricane Beryl hit the US coast?

After watching Beryl spin up from a tropical depression to a hurricane in a little more than 40 hours, and then slam into the Windward Islands, the big question on the minds of millions of U.S. residents is where the storm could be next weekend and whether it will still be a hurricane.

Unfortunately, there’s no clear answer yet, and may not be for a couple of days.

On Monday evening, the National Hurricane Center’s forecast track showed Beryl as a tropical storm near the Mexican coast on Saturday afternoon.

“There’s a lot of variables that could occur that can change the direction of a tropical storm, especially when it’s several days out,” said Tawnya Evans, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service field office in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Windy conditions over the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico could prevent Beryl from maintaining its hurricane status.

A high-pressure ridge sitting over the Gulf could be the deciding factor. If it holds strong, Beryl would continue a more westward track. If the ridge shifts eastward, Beryl could move more northward and potentially threaten the Gulf Coast.

Regardless of its strength or location in the Gulf next weekend, Beryl could bring an increased risk of showers and thunderstorms, along with swells and rip currents to the Texas coast, Corpus Christi’s forecast stated on Monday.

Puerto Rico forecast to see large swells

The hurricane center expects Beryl to remain a hurricane as it reaches Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula on Friday.

"The most likely scenario is for the storm to move westward into Mexico," DaSilva said. "However, it is very important to note that if the high pressure across the Southeast weakens, that can allow the storm to move farther north and potentially directly impact the Gulf Coast."

The storm is likely to have some impact on Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory that is home to more than 3 million American citizens. The hurricane center said the island can expect large swells that cause "life-threatening surf and rip current conditions'' in the next day.

'Full panic mode' in Barbados

Abe and Kristin Homan woke up Monday to the crash of waves on barrier islands just a short walk from their hotel on the southwestern coast of Barbados. From their window, they watched as fierce winds uprooted trees and sent debris flying.

“It’s pretty intense,” Abe Homan, 46, told USA TODAY.

The Homans arrived on the island Tuesday. What started “as a beautiful vacation,” made a dramatic turn over the weekend when the couple realized the severity of the storm, and people “went into full panic mode,” Homan said. They searched for a way back to South Carolina on Sunday, but it was too late. The planes were fully booked and the airport was soon shut down. Back at the Sandals resort, stranded vacationers and some of the staff were distraught.

“They were just so confused, and almost crying,” said Abe Homan, who runs a technology company based in his home state.

Later Monday, the Barbados government discontinued the hurricane warning. Now, the Homans are hoping to return to their four children in South Carolina by the Fourth of July.

Beryl on the move: Hurricane Beryl an 'extremely dangerous' Cat 4 storm as it roars toward Caribbean

Grenada authorities warn residents to stay indoors

Dr. Terence Walters, the national disaster coordinator for Grenada, urged residents to gather documents and put them and other necessities in plastic bags. Walters, speaking at a briefing early Monday, warned residents not to go outside but said Beryl could damage or destroy some homes. Even if a house suffers damage, residents might be safer hiding in a bathroom rather than making a run for a government shelter, Walters said. About 3,000 people were in shelters awaiting the storm, he said.

"If your house is damaged or destroyed, you have to use good judgment before you make a decision to get to safety," he said.

Barbados weather worsens: 'Do not go anywhere'

In Barbados, about 160 miles northeast of Carriacou, Home Affairs and Information Minister Wilfred Abrahams told residents “do not go anywhere until the all clear is given." Abrahams said some power lines were down and some of the island's 280,000 people were in the dark. More than 35,000 homes and businesses − about a quarter of Barbados Light & Power customers − were without power, the company said.

The worst of the storm has passed, but more damage was expected, Abrahams said. A "drone team" was ready to survey the island and help determine where work crews will be sent, he said.

Abrahams said the sun was coming out and he could see from comments on social media that many people were anxious about what happened.

“I know in the day of social media, everybody wants to be first to get something out," he told Barbados Today . "You want to be the first to have a video. You want to be the first to show something, you want to be first to show house damage. Don’t do that in a way that might cost you your life."

Riding out Hurricane Beryl in St. Lucia: 'We'll just kind of wing it'

Among those hunkering down for the storm was Linda Dancer, a travel agent from Charlotte, North Carolina, who arrived in St. Lucia on Saturday for an award ceremony. Over the last two days, she's watched as staff at the Sandals Grande St. Lucian resort installed plywood over windows, laid out sandbags and removed chandeliers. Dancer, 63, planned on staying in her room as the hurricane lashed the island.

“It was really sunny this morning, but we have outer bands coming in so it’s getting gray and darker out now,” she told USA TODAY. “I’m not taking my eyes off the weather app.”

While stocking her fridge at a Sandals resort on the west side of the island, Dancer has also been coordinating with clients whose vacations and honeymoons have been interrupted by the hurricane.

“Some of them … they're scared but you can’t leave at this point,” she said. “Some are like, ‘It's not that big a deal, we'll just kind of wing it.’”

What is rapid intensification?

Rapid intensification is a process in which a storm undergoes accelerated growth. The phenomenon is typically defined to be a tropical cyclone (whether a tropical storm or hurricane) intensifying by at least 35 mph in a 24-hour period.

"Rapid intensification occurs when a tropical storm or hurricane encounters an extremely conducive environment," Colorado State University hurricane researcher  Phil Klotzbach said . "Typically, this environment consists of very warm water, low vertical wind shear and high levels of midlevel moisture."

What are the Windward Islands?

The Windward Islands are the group of Caribbean islands in the eastern part of the Caribbean Sea. They include Dominica, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Grenada. Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago are sometimes included in the group.

They are called "windward"  − which means upward from a given point − because they are more windward to arriving ships than the Leeward Islands.

Downgraded Tropical Storm Chris still a threat in Mexico

Tropical Storm Chris, the third named storm of the season, eased to tropical depression status after crashing across the Mexican coastline near Veracruz overnight. The storm was forecast to produce rainfall totals of 4 to 8 inches across parts of eastern Mexico earlier Monday, with maximum rainfall totals around 12 inches in higher terrain of the Mexican states of Guanajuato, Queretaro and San Luis Potosi.

"This rainfall will result in areas of flooding, with mudslides possible in areas of higher terrain," the National Weather Service said.

What is the 2024 hurricane season forecast?

Federal forecasters have predicted a hurricane season unlike any other , with as many as 25 named storms possible.

It is the most storms the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has ever predicted in a preseason outlook. "All the ingredients are in place for an active season," National Weather Service director Ken Graham said in May.

NOAA director Rick Spinrad said the Atlantic hurricane season is shaping up to be "extraordinary" − an 85% chance for an above-average year. "The forecast … is the highest NOAA has ever issued for the May outlook," he said.
