The progress in wireless technologies has allowed various types of devices that can be connected to the internet. Additionally, this technology has also made it achievable for different devices to commune with each other without the requirement for wires. Wireless network technologies are completely situated to have a main impact on the expansion of components for rising innovations as well as their applications. This article list outs the wireless communication seminar topics on emerging technologies that will change organizations & way people communicate in the future.

Wireless Communication Seminar Topics for Engineering Students

The list of wireless communication seminar topics is discussed below. The following emerging technologies in wireless communication are very helpful for the students in selecting their seminar topics.

Wireless Communication Seminar Topics

SDR or Software-Defined Radio

A software-defined radio (SDR) is a wireless device mainly used to transmit & receive radio signals with software rather than hardware. So in radio systems, the majority of signal processing would change from chips into the software with SDR technology. This technology allows the radio to support a broad range of frequencies as well as protocols. SDR technology is used for complex applications and also replaces expensive hardware chips with complicated software algorithms.

SDRs offer various benefits over usual hardware radios like the capability to be simply upgraded & expanded with the latest features. SDR is very flexible, so it can be utilized with the latest technologies & legacy systems. It can be re-configured to support various modulation methods & frequencies, so it is perfect to use where the radio surroundings are changing constantly like disaster relief operations & very emergency services.

Millimeter Waves

Millimeter wave is used by wireless systems which operate at 30 – 300 gigahertz frequency range with a range of wavelengths from 1 – 10 millimeters. It is one kind of electromagnetic radiation including a wavelength in the range of millimeters. Sometimes, these are known as terahertz waves. These waves are used in radar, communications & imaging. One of the main millimeter wave applications is 5G and it is the latest wireless technology generation that provides faster speeds & lower latency significantly.

So, these waves are well-matched for 5G applications because of their huge bandwidth & capability to penetrate different obstacles. Millimeter waves are used in the medical imaging field. These waves can easily go through the human body to provide internal organs & structures with high-resolution images.

Backscatter Networking

Backscatter-networking technology is used to transmit data with extremely less power consumption and it aims at very small networked devices like IoT-based smart home devices. This technology is operated by simply re-modulating ambient wireless signals. Therefore, it is used where an area is saturated through wireless signals & there is a requirement for fairly simple IoT devices like sensors within offices & smart homes.

Wireless Sensing

Wireless-sensing technology is used in various applications which range from medical diagnostic centers to smart homes. Wireless signals are mainly utilized for sensing purposes in different applications like an indoor radar system used for drones & robots or virtual assistants for enhancing performance once many people are speaking within a similar room. The sensing purpose is the reflection & absorption of wireless signals.

Wireless Location Tracking

In wireless communication systems, sensing devices’ locations that are connected to them is the key trend. So, tracking of devices with 1-meter high accuracy within the wireless arena is allowed by a 5G network feature like IEEE 802.11az standard. Location is a key data point required in several business areas such as consumer marketing, supply chains, and IoT applications. Location sensing included with the core wireless network provides many benefits like power consumption, less hardware cost, precision & improved performance as compared to other systems like inertial navigation & fingerprinting.

LPWA (Low-Power Wide-Area) Networks

An LPWAN or low-power wide-area network is a wireless network that allows different devices to converse with each other above long distances with very small power. These networks are applicable where devices need to communicate with each other over long distances, however where power is limited like in the Internet of Things & sensor network applications. The main advantage of these networks is, they can extend the battery life of devices significantly because LPWANs utilize very little power to transmit & receive data so that devices can stay in standby mode for a long time.

Low power wide area networks provide low-bandwidth & power-efficient connectivity for IoT-based applications. Current networks mainly include NB-IoT(Narrowband IoT), LTE-M (Long Term Evolution for Machines), Sigfox, and LoRa which support extremely large areas like cities, countries, etc.

Vehicle-to-Everything or V2X Wireless Systems

The Vehicle-to-Everything wireless systems allow conventional & self-driving cars to converse with each other by the road infrastructure. This wireless system provides a wide range of services in addition to information exchanging & status data like security capabilities, driver information, fuel saving & navigation support.

There are two main V2X technologies in 2019: dedicated short-range communications (DSRC) standard, based on Wi-Fi using the IEEE 802.11p standard, and cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X). This system is mainly designed for improving road security & efficiency by decreasing accidents & traffic jamming. These wireless systems utilize DSRC or dedicated short-range communications for exchanging data like location, direction & speed. After that, the data is utilized for improving safety & traffic flow.

Long-Range Wireless Power

Charging a device on a particular charger point is somewhat better as compared to charging through a cable, although there are various new technologies available to charge different devices at up to the 1-meter range, above a table otherwise a desk surface. So, long-range wireless power could reduce power wires from desktop devices, laptops, kitchen appliances, display monitors, home utility systems like vacuum cleaners, etc.

Wi-Fi is a wireless technology used to allow various devices like computers, mobile devices, printers & video cameras for interfacing through the Internet. It is the radio signal transmitted from a router to a near device that changes the signal into data you can observe and utilize. The device sends back a radio signal to the Wi-Fi router and the router connects to the internet through cable or wire. Internet connectivity mainly occurs throughout a wireless router. Once you access a Wi-Fi network, then you connect it to a wireless router to allow your Wi-Fi-compatible devices for interfacing through the Internet. Wi-Fi is a main choice within high-performance network technology for homes & offices.

5G mobile network is a new global wireless network. It allows a new type of network that is mainly designed for connecting almost everything together like devices, objects & machines. Fifth-generation wireless technology offers higher upload & download speeds, more reliable connections, & better capacity as compared to previous networks.

This is a much more reliable & faster wireless network & it has the potential to change the way we utilize the internet to access different applications, information & social networks. 5G technology increases the amount of transmitted data above wireless systems because of more accessible bandwidth & advanced antenna technology.

Semantic Communication

Semantic communication is a new paradigm shift within communications. This communication targets what to send instead of how to send it. Particularly, this communication mainly transmits source semantic data depending on the environment knowledge, as a result, the system efficiency is increased significantly & particularly accuracy for difficult artificial intelligence tasks like autonomous driving and virtual & augmented reality which are existing pervasively in future wireless networks.

Additionally, IoT used to connect billions of devices wirelessly can produce huge data that supply “fuel” for AI. Many factors have led to the semantic communication development for future wireless communication networks to permit very quick access to mobile data. But in semantic communications, there are various basic problems still that have not been investigated well for future wireless networks.

Free Space Optical Communication

FSOC or free space optical communication is an optical communication that simply utilizes light propagating within free space for transmitting data wirelessly for networking of computers or telecommunications. In this communication, the term free space means external space, air, or vacuum. This kind of wireless technology is very helpful wherever the physical connections are not practical because of high costs otherwise other considerations.

Mobile Train Radio Communication

The MTRC system is an advanced & very effective communication system technologically. This type of communication system simply provides immediate & stable communication for the team of the train & the control center by the station master. So, this system connects the calls within 300 ms which is the lowest time utilized by any other system. This system also operates similarly to the ATC (Air traffic control) for aircraft.

This system is very useful in tracking, aiding & monitoring to create communication between trains & control room with the train number & cab number code. Thus, this system will also assist in providing real-time information about the operation of trains during monsoon time.

Steganalysis

Steganography is a secret communication method utilized within WSNs wherever the aggregated data is secreted as a message behind a cover picture that appears usually across a not-trusted network. The main purpose of this communication method is to identify suspected data streams, decide whether or not they have secreted messages encoded into them & if appropriate, recover the data hidden. Generally, Steganalysis starts with numerous suspect data streams however uncertain whether any of these comprise a hidden message.

Intervehicle Communication

Intervehicle Communication is attracting significant attention from the investigative community & the automobile industry, wherever it helps provide ITS or intelligent transportation system and also assistant services for drivers & passengers. This system aims to simplify the process of vehicles, handle vehicle traffic; help drivers through security and other information for passengers like driver assist systems, automated toll collection systems & other information-providing systems.

Near Field Communication

Near-field communication is a short-range wireless connectivity technology. This technology utilizes magnetic field induction for enabling communication between different devices once they are handled together otherwise brought each other within a few centimeters of each. This communication mainly includes credit card authenticating, allowing physical access, small file transfers, etc.

Examples of near-field communication are; payments of mobile, transit card, ticket redemption at a theater/concert, access authentication, etc. This communication has many benefits it improves operational efficiency, especially for payment processors; more secure, permits users to select from several cards dynamically, is simple to use, and hard to interrupt this communication from a distance, etc.

1. The Wireless Channel

Wireless Mulipath Channel Channel varies at two spatial scales: large scale fading small scale fading

Large-scale fading • In free space, received power attenuates like 1/r2. • With reflections and obstructions, can attenuate even more rapidly with distance. Detailed modelling complicated. • Time constants associated with variations are very long as the mobile moves, many seconds or minutes. • More important for cell site planning, less for communication system design.

Small-scale multipath fading • Wireless communication typically happens at very high carrier frequency. (eg. fc = 900 MHz or 1.9 GHz for cellular) • Multipath fading due to constructive and destructive interference of the transmitted waves. • Channel varies when mobile moves a distance of the order of the carrier wavelength. This is about 0.3 m for 900 Mhz cellular. • For vehicular speeds, this translates to channel variation of the order of 100 Hz. • Primary driver behind wireless communication system design.

Game plan • We wish to understand how physical parameters such as carrier frequency, mobile speed, bandwidth, delay spread impact how a wireless channel behaves from the communication system point of view. • We start with deterministic physical model and progress towards statistical models, which are more useful for design and performance evaluation.

Physical Models • Wireless channels can be modeled as linear time-varying systems: where ai(t) and i(t) are the gain and delay of path i. • The time-varying impulse response is: • Consider first the special case when the channel is time-invariant:

Passband to Baseband Conversion • Communication takes place at [f_c-W/2, f_c+ W/2]. • Processing takes place at baseband [-W/2,W/2].

Baseband Equivalent Channel • The frequency response of the system is shifted from the passband to the baseband. • Each path is associated with a delay and a complex gain.

Modulation and Sampling

Multipath Resolution Sampled baseband-equivalent channel model: where hl is the l th complex channel tap. and the sum is over all paths that fall in the delay bin System resolves the multipaths up to delays of 1/W .

Flat and Frequency-Selective Fading • Fading occurs when there is destructive interference of the multipaths that contribute to a tap.

Time Variations fci’(t) = Doppler shift of the i th path

Two-path Example v= 60 km/hr, f_c = 900 MHz: direct path has Doppler shift of + 50 Hz reflected path has shift of - 50 Hz Doppler spread = 100 Hz

Types of Channels

Statistical Models • Design and performance analysis based on statistical ensemble of channels rather than specific physical channel. • Rayleigh flat fading model: many small scattered paths Complex circular symmetric Gaussian . • Rician model: 1 line-of-sight plus scattered paths

Correlation over Time • Specified by autocorrelation function and power spectral density of fading process. • Example: Clarke’s (or Jake’s) model.

Additive Gaussian Noise • Complete baseband-equivalent channel model: • Special case: flat fading: • Will use this throughout the course.

2. Diversity

Main story • Communication over a flat fading channel has poor performance due to significant probability that channel is in deep fading. • Reliability is increased by providing more signal paths that fade independently. • Diversity can be provided across time, frequency and space. • Name of the game is how to exploit the added diversity in an efficient manner.

Baseline: AWGN Channel y = x+ w BPSK modulation x = § a Error probability decays exponentially with SNR.

Gaussian Detection

Rayleigh Flat Fading Channel

Rayleigh vs AWGN

Typical Error Event

BPSK, QPSK and 4-PAM • BPSK uses only the I-phase.The Q-phase is wasted. • QPSK delivers 2 bits per complex symbol. • To deliver the same 2 bits, 4-PAM requires 4 dB more transmit power. • QPSK exploits the available degrees of freedom in the channel better.

Time Diversity • Time diversity can be obtained by interleaving and coding over symbols across different coherent time periods.

Example:GSM • Amount of diversity limited by delay constraint and how fast channel varies. • In GSM, delay constraint is 40ms (voice). • To get full diversity of 8, needs v > 30 km/hr at fc = 900Mhz.

Repetition Coding

Deep Fades Become Rarer

Performance

Beyond Repetition Coding • Repetition coding gets full diversity, but sends only one symbol every L symbol times: does not exploit fully the degrees of freedom in the channel. • How to do better?

Example: Rotation code (L=2)

Rotation vs Repetition Coding

Product Distance

Antenna Diversity Both Receive Transmit

Receive Diversity h1 h2

Transmit Diversity h1 h2

Space-time Codes • Transmitting the same symbol simultaneously at the antennas doesn’t work. • Using the antennas one at a time and sending the same symbol over the different antennas is like repetition coding. • More generally, can use any time-diversity code by turning on one antenna at a time.

Alamouti Scheme

Space-time Code Design

Cooperative Diversity • Different users can form a distributed antenna array to help each other in increasing diversity. • Distributed versions of space-time codes may be applicable. • Interesting characteristics: • Users have to exchange information and this consumes bandwidth. • Operation typically in half-duplex mode • Broadcast nature of the wireless medium can be exploited.

Wireless Communication: Introduction, Types and Applications

  • April 2, 2024
  • By Ravi Teja

Wireless Communication is the fastest growing and most vibrant technological areas in the communication field. Wireless Communication is a method of transmitting information from one point to other, without using any connection like wires, cables or any physical medium.

Generally, in a communication system, information is transmitted from transmitter to receiver that are placed over a limited distance. With the help of Wireless Communication, the transmitter and receiver can be placed anywhere between few meters (like a T.V. Remote Control) to few thousand kilometers (Satellite Communication).

We live in a World of communication and Wireless Communication, in particular, is a key part of our lives. Some of the commonly used Wireless Communication Systems in our day – to – day life are: Mobile Phones, GPS Receivers, Remote Controls, Bluetooth Audio and Wi-Fi etc.

What is Wireless Communication?

Communication Systems can be Wired or Wireless and the medium used for communication can be Guided or Unguided. In Wired Communication, the medium is a physical path like Co-axial Cables, Twisted Pair Cables and Optical Fiber Links etc. which guides the signal to propagate from one point to other.

Such type of medium is called Guided Medium. On the other hand, Wireless Communication doesn’t require any physical medium but propagates the signal through space. Since, space only allows for signal transmission without any guidance, the medium used in Wireless Communication is called Unguided Medium.

If there is no physical medium, then how does wireless communication transmit signals? Even though there are no cables used in wireless communication, the transmission and reception of signals is accomplished with Antennas.

Antennas are electrical devices that transform the electrical signals to radio signals in the form of Electromagnetic (EM) Waves and vice versa. These Electromagnetic Waves propagates through space. Hence, both transmitter and receiver consists of an antenna.

What is Electromagnetic Wave?

Electromagnetic Waves carry the electromagnetic energy of electromagnetic field through space. Electromagnetic Waves include Gamma Rays (γ – Rays), X – Rays, Ultraviolet Rays, Visible Light, Infrared Rays, Microwave Rays and Radio Waves. Electromagnetic Waves (usually Radio Waves) are used in wireless communication to carry the signals.

An Electromagnetic Wave consists of both electric and magnetic fields in the form of time varying sinusoidal waves. Both these fields are oscillating perpendicular to each other and the direction of propagation of the Electromagnetic Wave is again perpendicular to both these fields.

Mathematically, an Electromagnetic Wave can be described using Maxwell’s equations. Pictorial representation of an Electromagnetic Wave is shown below, where the Electric Field is acting in the Y – axis, magnetic field is acting in the Z – axis and the Electromagnetic Wave propagates in X – axis.

Propagation-of-Electromagnetic-Wave

A Brief History of Wireless Communication

Since the use of smoke signals, flags and flashing mirrors in the pre – historic period, Wireless communication has been a part of human life and it is continuously evolving. Modern Wireless Communication i.e., using electrical signals and radio waves for communication has been around us for more than 100 years.

In the year 1897, Guglielmo Marconi successfully demonstrated the Wireless Telegraphy by sending EM Waves for a short distance of 100 meters. This demonstration paved way for Radio Communication and the term Radio is derived from Radiant Energy.

By early 1900’s, Trans – Atlantic radio transmission had been established, where Marconi successfully transmitted messages in the form of Morse code. Since then, the technology related to wireless communication and wireless system has advanced rapidly and thus enabling transmissions over longer distances at low cost with cheaper devices.

Throughout the development of wireless communication, there are many wireless systems and methods that flourished and many got disappeared. The best example for this is Telephone Communication and Television Transmission. Initially, all telephone related communication was carried out (and still is) using wired network, which we call it as Landline Telephone.

But the rapid growth of Mobile Communication started to replace the complex wired telephone system. In this scenario, the wired technology became outdated and got replaced by wireless communication.

Another scenario where wireless communication got replaced by wired communication is Television broadcasting. In the early days, television signals were broadcasted using wireless radio transmitters. But this setup got replaced by cable television.

These two examples point out that with the development of technology, we always have to choose what’s best for the situation i.e., in some areas we have to use wired communication whereas in the other, going for wireless may be a better option.

Why Wireless Communication?

When wired communication can do most of the tasks that a wireless communication can, why do we need Wireless Communication? The primary and important benefit of wireless communication is mobility.

Apart from mobility, wireless communication also offers flexibility and ease of use, which makes it increasingly popular day – by – day. Wireless Communication like mobile telephony can be made anywhere and anytime with a considerably high throughput performance.

Another important point is infrastructure. The setup and installation of infrastructure for wired communication systems is an expensive and time consuming job. The infrastructure for wireless communication can be installed easily and low cost.

In emergency situations and remote locations, where the setup of wired communication is difficult, wireless communication is a viable option.

Advantages of Wireless Communication

There are numerous advantage of Wireless Communication Technology, Wireless Networking and Wireless Systems over Wired Communication like Cost, Mobility, Ease of Installation, and Reliability etc.

The cost of installing wires, cables and other infrastructure is eliminated in wireless communication and hence lowering the overall cost of the system compared to wired communication system. Installing wired network in building, digging up the Earth to lay the cables and running those wires across the streets is extremely difficult, costly and time consuming job.

In historical buildings, drilling holes for cables is not a best idea as it destroys the integrity and importance of the building. Also, in older buildings with no dedicated lines for communication, wireless communication like Wi-Fi or Wireless LAN is the only option.

As mentioned earlier, mobility is the main advantage of wireless communication system. It offers the freedom to move around while still connected to network.

Ease of Installation

The setup and installation of wireless communication network’s equipment and infrastructure is very easy as we need not worry about the hassle of cables. Also, the time required to setup a wireless system like a Wi-Fi network for example, is very less when compared to setting up a full cabled network.

Reliability

Since there are no cables and wires involved in wireless communication, there is no chance of communication failure due to damage of these cables, which may be caused by environmental conditions, cable splice and natural diminution of metallic conductors.

Disaster Recovery

In case of accidents due to fire, floods or other disasters, the loss of communication infrastructure in wireless communication system can be minimal.

Disadvantages of Wireless Communication

Even though wireless communication has a number of advantages over wired communication, there are a few disadvantages as well. The most concerning disadvantages are Interference, Security and Health.

Interference

Wireless Communication systems use open space as the medium for transmitting signals. As a result, there is a huge chance that radio signals from one wireless communication system or network might interfere with other signals.

The best example is Bluetooth and Wi-Fi (WLAN). Both these technologies use the 2.4GHz frequency for communication and when both of these devices are active at the same time, there is a chance of interference.

One of the main concerns of wireless communication is Security of the data. Since the signals are transmitted in open space, it is possible that an intruder can intercept the signals and copy sensitive information.

Health Concerns

Continuous exposure to any type of radiation can be hazardous. Even though the levels of RF energy that can cause the damage are not accurately established, it is advised to avoid RF radiation to the maximum.

Basic Elements of a Wireless Communication System

A typical Wireless Communication System can be divided into three elements: the Transmitter, the Channel and the Receiver. The following image shows the block diagram of wireless communication system.

Elements-of-Wireless-Communication-System

The Transmission Path

A typical transmission path of a Wireless Communication System consists of Encoder, Encryption, Modulation and Multiplexing. The signal from the source is passed through a Source Encoder, which converts the signal in to a suitable form for applying signal processing techniques.

The redundant information from signal is removed in this process in order to maximize the utilization of resources. This signal is then encrypted using an Encryption Standard so that the signal and the information is secured and doesn’t allow any unauthorized access.

Channel Encoding is a technique that is applied to the signal to reduce the impairments like noise, interference, etc. During this process, a small amount of redundancy is introduced to the signal so that it becomes robust against noise. Then the signal is modulated using a suitable Modulation Technique (like PSK, FSK and QPSK etc.) , so that the signal can be easily transmitted using antenna.

The modulated signal is then multiplexed with other signals using different Multiplexing Techniques like Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) or Frequency Division Multiplexing (FDM) to share the valuable bandwidth.

The Channel

The channel in Wireless Communication indicates the medium of transmission of the signal i.e. open space. A wireless channel is unpredictable and also highly variable and random in nature. A channel maybe subject to interference, distortion, noise, scattering etc. and the result is that the received signal may be filled with errors.

The Reception Path

The job of the Receiver is to collect the signal from the channel and reproduce it as the source signal. The reception path of a Wireless Communication System comprises of Demultiplexing , Demodulation, Channel Decoding, Decryption and Source Decoding. From the components of the reception path it is clear that the task of the receiver is just the inverse to that of transmitter.

The signal from the channel is received by the Demultiplexer and is separated from other signals. The individual signals are demodulated using appropriate Demodulation Techniques and the original message signal is recovered. The redundant bits from the message are removed using the Channel Decoder.

Since the message is encrypted, Decryption of the signal removes the security and turns it into simple sequence of bits. Finally, this signal is given to the Source Decoder to get back the original transmitted message or signal.

Types of Wireless Communication Systems

Today, people need Mobile Phones for many things like talking, internet, multimedia etc. All these services must be made available to the user on the go i.e. while the user is mobile. With the help of these wireless communication services, we can transfer voice, data, videos, images etc.

Wireless Communication Systems also provide different services like video conferencing, cellular telephone, paging, TV, Radio etc. Due to the need for variety of communication services, different types of Wireless Communication Systems are developed. Some of the important Wireless Communication Systems available today are:

Television and Radio Broadcasting

Satellite communication.

  • Mobile Telephone System (Cellular Communication)

Global Positioning System (GPS)

Infrared communication.

  • WLAN (Wi-Fi)
  • Cordless Phones
  • Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)

There are many other system with each being useful for different applications. Wireless Communication systems can be again classified as Simplex, Half Duplex and Full Duplex. Simplex communication is one way communication. An example is Radio broadcast system.

Half Duplex is two way communication but not simultaneous one. An example is walkie – talkie (civilian band radio). Full Duplex is also two way communication and it is a simultaneous one. Best example for full duplex is mobile phones.

The devices used for Wireless Communication may vary from one service to other and they may have different size, shape, data throughput and cost. The area covered by a Wireless Communication system is also an important factor. The wireless networks may be limited to a building, an office campus, a city, a small regional area (greater than a city) or might have global coverage.

We will see a brief note about some of the important Wireless Communication Systems.

Radio is considered to be the first wireless service to be broadcast. It is an example of a Simplex Communication System where the information is transmitted only in one direction and all the users receiving the same data.

Satellite Communication System is an important type of Wireless Communication. Satellite Communication Networks provide worldwide coverage independent to population density.

Satellite Communication Systems offer telecommunication (Satellite Phones), positioning and navigation (GPS), broadcasting, internet, etc. Other wireless services like mobile, television broadcasting and other radio systems are dependent of Satellite Communication Systems.

Mobile Telephone Communication System

Perhaps, the most commonly used wireless communication system is the Mobile Phone Technology. The development of mobile cellular device changed the World like no other technology. Today’s mobile phones are not limited to just making calls but are integrated with numerous other features like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS, and FM Radio.

The latest generation of Mobile Communication Technology is 5G (which is indeed successor to the widely adapted 4G). Apart from increased data transfer rates (technologists claim data rates in the order of Gbps), 5G Networks are also aimed at Internet of Things (IoT) related applications and future automobiles.

GPS is solely a subcategory of satellite communication. GPS provides different wireless services like navigation, positioning, location, speed etc. with the help of dedicated GPS receivers and satellites.

Bluetooth is another important low range wireless communication system. It provides data, voice and audio transmission with a transmission range of 10 meters. Almost all mobile phones, tablets and laptops are equipped with Bluetooth devices. They can be connected to wireless Bluetooth receivers, audio equipment, cameras etc.

Although it is considered an obsolete technology, paging was a major success before the wide spread use of mobile phones. Paging provides information in the form of messages and it is a simplex system i.e. the user can only receive the messages.

Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN)

Wireless Local Area Network or WLAN (Wi-Fi) is an internet related wireless service. Using WLAN, different devices like laptops and mobile phones can connect to an access point (like a Wi-Fi Router) and access internet.

Wi-Fi is one of the widely used wireless network, usually for internet access (but sometimes for data transfer within the Local Area Network). It is very difficult to imagine the modern World without Wi-Fi.

Infrared Communication is another commonly used wireless communication in our daily lives. It uses the infrared waves of the Electromagnetic (EM) spectrum. Infrared (IR) Communication is used in remote controls of Televisions, cars, audio equipment etc.

A brief overview on Wireless Communication, Advantages and Disadvantages, Different Types of Wireless Communication and also some important applications. Important course deadlines

Assignment 1: Assigned 01/29/13 ; Due 2/05/13 Obtain and Read the following two papers: [1] “The Wireless Revolution” by T.S. Rappaport, IEEE Communications Magazine,1991. [2] “State of the art in 60 Ghz circuits and systems for wireless communications,”by TS Rappaport, et al, iEEE Proceedings, 2011. Write a (5) page (minimum) typed report in IEEE conference paper Format that compares and contrasts these 2 journal papers and the assigned textbook reading. Then, identify at least two areas of research from the textbook and two papers that are of Particular interest to you, and find some outside references that you can rely on to learn more about your areas of interest. Use proper IEEE citation formatting in your report.

Assignment 2: Assigned 2/05/13; Due 2/19/13 Part 1: Write a 5 page paper, in IEEE conference paper format, about the topics of either Spatial Division Multiple Access (SDMA) or Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA). The choice is yours. All systems are going to play a vital role in the future of wireless communications. Your paper should be written as a tutorial, like my textbook, that clearly explains the fundamentals, and gives at least two numerical examples (like my textbook), that an incoming graduate student could read to understand. Be sure to give proper citations to other references and materials that you use to create your paper. Your work must be original.

Part 2: Create three (3) original homework problems, complete with solutions, that could be used to help a student understand the key concepts of your paper. Pretend you are the teacher – your homework problems should help others use the mathematics involved in the multiple access technique you discussed, and should allow the student to gain insight into tradeoffs or particular attributes of the multiple access method.

Assignment 3: Assigned 2/19/13; Due 2/26/13

Part 1: Prove from first principles that (B.4), (B.7) and (B.8) are correct.

Part 2: Work HW Problems from the textbook and do your own work, not relying on others or the web: 3.16, 3.17, 3.23 (assume noise figure of the receiver is F= 10 dB), 3.24

Part 3: Explain briefly how trunking theory applies to cdma-2000 or IS-95 cellular systems. (Hint: “codes” may be like “channels”).

Assignment 4: Assigned 2/26/13; Due 3/14/13

Part 1: Derive equations (4.54), (4.55) and (4.56). Part 2: Write a Matlab program that reproduces, with exact likeness, the graphic of Figure 3.6 in the textbook (this is based on equation 3.16 for varying values of C). You will learn Matlab and how to create a complex graphical figure. Please provide your final graphic that is identical to Figure 3.6 and include all documented source code. Matlab is available free to all NYU students, and is a very powerful, useful tool to know how to use.

Assignment 5: Assigned 3/14/13; Due 4/2/13

Work on the following problems from the textbook, doing your own work without help from others or the web: 4.11; 4.12; 4.13; 4.19.

Assignment 6: Assigned 4/2/13; Due 4/16/13 Homework problems: 4.22; 4.28; 4.29; 4.30. Please read the paper and start early .

Assignment 7: Assigned 4/16/13; Due 5/2/13 Homework Problems: 4.31 and 4.32(you don’t have to do part c). Include a hard copy of all of your software, scripts, with comments, and be sure to label all graphs. Demonstrate “sanity checks” to ensure your work is accurate.
