The Rani Mahal in Palpa, Nepal: Travel Guide & Photography

Destinations in Nepal , Villages in Nepal / June 5, 2020 by fulltimeexplorer / 3 Comments

The Rani Mahal in Palpa, or Ranighat Palace, is often referred to as the “Taj Mahal of Nepal.” Although it doesn’t resemble the famous Taj Mahal visually, it does have a similar back story full of love and determination. This palace is built along the Kali Gandaki River in the Palpa District of Nepal. At the time it was built (in 1893), the palace was isolated in the middle of nowhere. Now, it’s becoming a tourist destination for those who want to witness loves bounds.

Rani Mahal History

Rani Mahal translates to “queens palace” and was built by the General of Palpa, Khadga Shumsher. He had more than one wife, but his youngest and favorite wife was named Tej Kumari. Her last wish before she passed was to have a Durbar built in her memory. Thus began the creation of the Rani Mahal.

After his wife passed, he searched several locations looking for the perfect place to build. He stumbled upon the current site, but there was no way to reach it at the time other than by foot. There was also a large cliff that would need to be removed. But, he was certain this was the right place and through pure willpower, he was able to make the area suitable for a palace by overcoming any of the barriers.

With the location primed, Khadga Shumsher hired a British architect who was living in India. He then selected builders from the Palpa army. It took four years to complete and is now known as a “monument of love” throughout Nepal.

In 1902, the family fled to India. I can’t find the exact reason why, but they left the palace abandoned less than 20 years after its completion. This articles states that he had orchestrated an assassination in the Nepalese government. By the end of the twentieth century, the building had deteriorated. Locals told us that theft had become a major problem as well. If you visit today, you can see that the inside has been gutted with none of its original charms or decoration. All of it had been stolen and removed.

Now, the government has taken on the task of restoring the palace to its original glory. Currently, the outside is back to a wonderful condition. I’m not sure if they intend to restore the interior as well, but it would be magnificent if they tried.

Rani Mahal Travel Guide

Location:   18 km (11 miles) north of Tansen, Palpa

How to get there by bus: Getting to the Rani Mahal from Tansen, Palpa is fairly easy. A local bus goes there for $1 per person at 2:00pm, but I’m told you have to walk about 25 minutes. The hotels in town have a private jeep. It’s not comfy, and it’s very crowded with locals from nearby villages, but it was the most convenient way to get there. You can find the jeeps by the Amar Narayan Temple for 140 rupees ($1.40 USD). They leave daily around 2:30pm, but it’s best to get there around 2:00 to secure a seat since they fill up quickly. The same jeep can take you back the following morning at 8:30am. The ride is about an hour and a half.

Hiking there: You can also hike on the same route the jeep takes. I’ve been told it’s about 2 hours downhill from Tansen and about 4 hours uphill on the way back. If you decide to hike, it might be worth it to hike there, and jeep back.

How long to spend there:  The Rani Mahal is currently the only thing to see, so I’d recommend an overnight stay. Some people arrive early in the morning and go back to Tansen the same day if they don’t want to rough it in the basic hotels.

Hotels & Accommodations

There are a couple of very basic hotels and camping grounds nearby. We intended to camp on the bank of the river but rain prevented us from doing so. Even though there are a few choices, it seems the hotels are all owned by the same family. You can call the Rani Mahal Resort at 9821425136 or 9867261635 or 9857062847. There’s no wifi here and very little cell service, so be patient with someone answering. Its 600 rupees for one room (about $6 USD).

Ranimahal: the jewel of the west

write short paragraph about rani mahal

Madhab Aryal

Ranimahal is a stately brick-and-mortar edifice constructed in 1893 by then General Khadga Shumsher to commemorate his deceased wife, Tej Kumari. The palace is nestled on top of a giant rock, at the banks of the Kaligandaki River. In these regards, Rani Mahal, or Queen’s Palace, has parallels to Taj Mahal of India, the reason why it is often referred to as Nepal’s Taj Mahal.

Ranimahal is perhaps the most famous landmark in Palpa. But the palace and the ancient town of Tansen nearby have been long in the shadows , sandwiched between the glamour of Pokhara to the northeast and Lumbini to the south. Moreover, for a lack of proper upkeep, the castle has been at risk of landslide and erosion . Even the latest efforts to renovate Ranimahal, in 2016, courted controversy , with the locals miffed over the use of cement mortar instead of traditional construction materials. As recently as January, a report pointed out that Ranimahal’s properties are being infringed upon. Amid all this, how much of the Ranimahal’s storied legacy is remaining today? And, is a trip to Ranimahal worthwhile at all?

Perhaps the best thing one can say about Ranimahal is it has a quiet atmosphere, surrounded by natural opulence, and, of course, the historical significance of the palace itself. Nirmal Shrestha, a historian, says the king had the ambition to develop the palace as a religious destination, an equivalent to India’s Benaras. “That possibility is alive even today,” he says. “If that happens, it would invite thousands of pilgrims every year. But even as it stands today, the palace has enough draws to satisfy tourists, especially those who want to get lost in nature and appreciate history.” But Shrestha pointed out the local government’s indifference to the infinite possibility Ranimahal holds.

Ranimahal, the four-storey, 56 ft broad and 112ft tall palace, was constructed according to a fusion of European and neoclassical styles of architecture. A prayer room of Khadga Shumsher lies at the eastern front of the palace. There are sitting rooms on the topmost floor, while there are bedrooms in the middle. The palace is surrounded by gardens and a pond. The stairs that start from the palace gate goes all the way down to the river Kaligandaki. Previously, the palace was the entry point for thousands of religious pilgrims aiming for Muktinath temple in Mustang, because of which there is an ancient guesthouse. There are a horse stable and relics of the king’s regime. There are two ponds on the premises, their edges intricately carved. Ranipokhari is also taken by many as a symbol of love; hence the palace sees a host of couples daily.

write short paragraph about rani mahal

Of late, Ranimahal is plagued with risks of natural disasters such as landslide and soil erosion. Road construction projects over the palace continue unabated. But the local units seem little concerned to curb these risks, as a result, many locals are apprehensive about the future of this 121-year old monument. Tara Bahadur Thapa, who is 64, said road construction drives and natural disasters are spelling terror on the future of Ranimahal. “Many tourists who visit the palace express concerns about its future,” he said. “But the local unit has done little. Ranimahal is losing its sheen.” But besides that, Ranimahal makes for a worthy visit, Thapa said. “The scenic landscape and the antiquities are perhaps the most selling points of Ranimahal today,” he said.

Ranimahal is located 13km away from Tansen, which is 396 km from Kathmandu, 65km from Lumbini and 120km from Pokhara. One can take public vehicles from Tansen to Ranimahal. Or one can opt to hike from Tansen as well, which is perhaps the most worthy choice if you have some time to spare.

Historians say Ranimahal had plenty of artefacts that harkened back to the time the palace was constructed. But of late, those artefacts have been stolen and this seems to disappoint many visitors. Ratnadevi Shrestha, a visitor from Pokhara, is one of them. “We came from that far to observe the arts and artefacts of the ancient time,” she said. “But we got disappointed when we saw hardly anything except for empty rooms.”

Worryingly, Tansen Municipality, which currently administrates the palace, seems indifferent to this. The municipality last year constructed a park with Rs1.9million but the park, called Eco Park, is in want of better upkeep. Ashok Kumar Shahi, the mayor, however, floated some promise, saying the municipality plans to preserve the palace and its remaining artefacts with a ‘master plan’.

HOW TO GET THERE : Public vehicles to Tansen are available from Pokhara, a 120km ride. From Lumbini, it’s 65km far. From Tansen, Ranimahal lies just about 13km away.

WHERE TO STAY: There are hotels and resort in Ranimahal that can host about 300 tourists.

WHAT TO EAT: Delicacies made of fish from Kaligandaki; local chicken and goat curry; and organic Nepali khana.

DETOURS: Awal cave which is nearby Ranimahal is fast gaining popularity. Observe the agriculture farms in nearby Sutuka and Chherlung villages. Also, visit Alamdevi Temple.

BUDGET: Rs5,000 per person per day.

History of Rani Mahal (Ranighat Palace)

General Khadga Samsher Rana was forced to lower his royal titles in 1887 and was sent to Palpa-Gauda as Head of Nepal's Western Governor.

Khadga Shumsher 's beloved youngest wife Tej Kumari Devi died at Palpa-Gauda in 1892, and within one year Khadga built a palace and named Rani Mahal after his wife.

The tern Rani Mahal translates into the Queen's Palace in English. The General also called the surrounding forest Rani Ban (Rani forest) and got the Ghats Rani Ghat. In 1902, Khadga Samsher Rana and his family fled to India, leaving Rani Mahal after which the Mahal fell into disrepair.

Architecture of Rani Mahal

Away from the hustle and bustle of the Tansen Bazaar, sitting on the bank of the river with the most glamorous light, a neo-classical art and architecture is the eye-catching palace where every aspect projected the ounce of affection.

The woods, the wetlands, the stairwell cases and the banks of the river all reflect Khadga Shumsher 's love for his late wife. Rani Mahal looks beautiful and is regarded as a jewel of Palpa and a perfect example of love.

It took the Palace five years to complete as each piece of the building had been studied. In the palace, there are a dozen rooms, lovely pools, a mosque, a splendid garden surrounding the area, guest rooms, a kitchen etc.

Rani Mahal Today

As Khadga Samsher left the palace and fled to India, without any proper owner or caretaker Rani Mahal was left behind. The state of the palace was a concern of Nepal's government and locals alike.

By the end of the 20th century, Rani Mahal had been practically ruined. Very few tourists had visited the palace, mostly by those most interested in Nepal's history.

Currently, Nepal's government has begun a program of renovation and rehabilitation to restore and expand the palace to its original condition. This will not only protect the national heritage resources, but it will also expand the tourist possibilities in the region and result in different projects.

Palpa is located in the Lumbini province of Nepal and is one of the 77 districts of the country. This district is located on the west side of Kathmandu valley with a distance of about 260Km. The capital, as well as the economical center of the district, is Tansen with a huge number of settlements and numbers of people. Palpa region has massive potential for tourism and Rani mahal is one of many high potential tourism destinations of Palpa.

Rani Mahal history

The history of   Rani Mahal began   when Khadga Samsher Rana was forced to drop his title as general and was sent to the west side of Nepal. The year was 1887, general Khadga Samsher Rana was forced to go to the west side of Nepal and act as the Western Commander in Chief of Nepal. Various politics among the family members of Rana occurred at that time and sending Khadga Samsher Rana to the western part of Nepal may also have been the result of the same politics.

It was the year 1892 and the youngest wife of Khadga Samsher Rana died. She was the youngest of the wives of Khadga Samsher Rana as well as the most beloved. He was grief-struck with the sudden demise of his queen. Khadga built a palace in memory of his beloved queen and named it Rani Mahal.

Location of Rani Mahal

Rani Mahal is located at a distance of 16.3 Km from Tansen which is the headquarters of Palpa district. To reach Rani Mahal from Palpa it may take about one hour going on average speed. The palace is located on the top of a rock at the bank of Kali Gandaki.

Kali Gandaki is one of the holiest rivers of Nepal. Saligram is found on the bank of only the Kali Gandaki River. It is believed that Saligram is one of the many forms of Lord Vishnu.

Rani Mahal is surrounded by a forest which is also called Rani ban which translates to the forest of the queen. The forest was given the name Rani ban when Khadga Samsher named the palace Rani Mahal. He at that time also named the nearby Ghat the Rani Ghat.

Rani Mahal appearance

As we have already discussed Rani Mahal is located at the top of the rock at the bank of the Kali Gandaki River. The entire rock is covered in structures and is very beautiful. The main structure of Rani Mahal is located at the top of the rock. It is colored blue and white color. The architecture of the palace resembles the buildings that are made in the west. On the front side of the main structure, there are two small ponds which are called Rani Pokhari (The pond of the queen). The ponds are small but are incredibly beautiful and add to the beauty of the palace.

From the main building to the base of the palace the other structures are colored white and contain stairs from the main building to the base. Along, with the stairs, there are some structures also that are present below the main structure of the palace.

Rani Mahal after the abandonment by Khadga Samsher Rana

Khadga Samsher Rana with his family lived in Rani Mahal till 1902 A.D. However, in 1902 A.D. Khadga Samsher Rana with his family abandoned the palace and moved to India, due to a threat to his life as well as the life of his family. Khadga Samsher was forced to leave the beautiful palace that he had made in memory of his beloved late wife. When the Rana family abandoned the palace and went to India, the palace was left abandoned.

Since no one was left to maintain the structure and environment various damage was seen in the   structure . The palace was huge and made for the living of lots of people, so it also needed a lot of resources to manage it. However, the government of Nepal had taken the consideration for maintenance of the palace to its former glory, and it had been done to some level.

Taj Mahal of Nepal

Rani Mahal is also called the Taj Mahal of Nepal as it was a beautiful structure that was made by a husband in the memory of his late wife.

Rani Mahal as a center of tourist attractions

Rani Mahal is quickly developing as the massive tourist attraction of the country. People not only come to visit the palace but also come to enjoy themselves at the banks of the Kali Gandaki River. The place is already the most popular landmark of the district and with proper care and marketing can move much ahead in the field of tourism.

The Wonder of Love; Rani Mahal – Palpa

The Wonder of Love; Rani Mahal – Palpa

Also known as the Taj Mahal of Nepal, Rani Mahal was built as the symbol of love for the beloved late wife of General Khadga Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana. The palace was built in the 19 th century at the banks of the Kali Gandaki River, between Syangja and Palpa. Situated at the distance of 13 km from Tansen , the palace looks attractive sitting on a massive rock at a secluded and a quiet place.

In the year 1887, General Khadga SJB Rana was forced to give up his royal title and was sent to Palpa as the western commander in chief of Nepal. In the year 1992, Khadga Shumsher went through an unexpected tremor of losing his youngest wife Tej Kumari Devi. Saddened by the incident he called upon the architects from abroad to make a piece of art in the name of his beautiful wife. Thus the Rani Mahal (Queen’s Palace) came into existence.

Rani Mahal Palpa

The palace took five years to complete as every piece of the architecture was detailed. There are a dozen of rooms, beautiful ponds, a temple, wonderful garden surrounding the area, guest rooms, a kitchen etc. in the palace.

Since the palace was built on the edge of the jungle, the jungle was also named as Rani Ban (queen’s jungle) and the stairs leading to the river as Rani Ghat. The river also possesses a religious importance as it is believed that touching the water of the river provides salvation to any sinners.

Away from the hustle and bustle of the Tansen Bazaar, sitting on the riverbank with the most elegant color, a neo-classic art and architecture lies the eye catching palace where every details project the ounce of love. The forests, the ponds, the stair cases and the river banks, everything embodies the affection of Khadga Shumsher towards his late wife.

Rani Mahal looks magical, it is a jewel of Palpa and a true epitome of love. Thus next time you visit Palpa, do not forget to hike down from Tansen towards the bank of Kaligandaki to witness this untouched beauty resting peacefully on the lap of a forest symbolizing love and devotion.

Palpa Rani Mahal

The Palpa District is so famous for a reason. One of the most trending old songs of Nepal, “Choli Ramro Palpali Dhaka ko, Herai Ramro Mayalu aakha ko, Jhilke Majura”. It explains a lot about Palpa. The Dhaka of Palpa is considered the purest and quality Dhaka of Nepal. It is one of the popular travel destinations of Nepal. And Rani Mahal is the heart of the Palpa District which is considered the symbol of love. Palpa Rani Mahal is made in the memory of Late Queen Tej Kumari by king Khadga Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana.

History of Palpa Rani Mahal

The Rani Mahal, or Ranighat Palace, in Palpa is often referred to as the “ Taj Mahal of Nepal. ”. Although it doesn’t imitate the renowned Taj Mahal physically, it does have a similar back story full of love and determination. This monument was built as the token of love for the beloved late wife named Tej Kumari Devi of General Khadga Shumsher Jung Bahadur Rana .

RANI MAHAL, STORY OF ITS MAKER | Think Research Expose

The palace was erected in the 19th century at the banks of the Kali Gandaki River, surrounded by both Syangja and Palpa. Located at the span of 13 km from Tansen Bazar, the palace looks enticing seated on a massive rock in a secluded and quiet area. At the time it was built (in 1893), the palace was deserted in the middle of nowhere. Now, it’s becoming a tourist destination for those who want to witness the famous love bounds.

In the year 1887, General Khadga SJB Rana was forced to give up his royal position and was appointed to Palpa as the western commander in chief of Nepal. In the year 1992, Khadga Shumsher went for the abrupt misery of losing his youngest wife Tej Kumari Devi. Disheartened by the incident he called upon the architects from abroad to make a piece of art in the name of his gorgeous wife. Thus, The Rani Mahal (Queen’s Palace) construction was initiated and it came into existence.

After his wife passed, he checked several locations for the perfect place to build. He stumbled upon the current location, but there was no other way to reach it at the time other than by foot. There was also a huge cliff that was needed to be removed. But, he was convinced that this was the right place and through pure grit, he was able to make the location suitable for a palace by overcoming all of the barriers.

Palpa Tansen Bazaar

Away from the hubbub and chaos of the Tansen Bazaar, sitting on the riverbank with the most dignified color, a neo-classic art and architecture lie the grand palace where every detail project the ounce of love. The forests, the ponds, the staircases, and the river banks, everything illustrates the affection of Khadga Shumsher towards his late wife. Rani Mahal appears magical, it is one of the jewels of Nepal and the true essence of love. Thus next time you visit Palpa, do not neglect to hike down from Tansen towards the bank of Kaligandaki River to spectate this untouched beauty resting harmoniously on the lap of a forest symbolizing love and devotion.

Tansen, Palpa | Community Homestay Nepal

The palace took around five years to finish as every bit of the architecture was detailed. There are dozens of rooms, pleasing ponds, a temple, a delightful garden surrounding the area, guest rooms, a grand kitchen, etc. in the palace. Since the palace was built on the corner of the forest, the forest is also named Rani Ban (queen’s jungle) and the stairs leading to the Kali Gandaki River as Rani Ghat . The river also acquires religious importance as it is believed that making contact with the water of the river provides salvation to any sinners.

In 1902, the family fled to India. The exact reason is unknown, but they left the palace abandoned less than 20 years of the palace’s inauguration.  It is believed that he had orchestrated an assassination in the Nepalese government. By the end of the twentieth century, the building had already deteriorated. Locals believe that theft became the major problem as well. If you visit today, you can notice that the inside has been hollowed with none of its authentic charms or decoration. All of them might have been stolen and removed. Now, the government has taken on the responsibility of restoring the palace to its original glory. Currently, the outside of the palace is back to its classic condition. It is not sure if the government is intending to restore the interior as well, but it would be fabulous if they tried.
