Free Year 5 Maths Worksheets And Homework – Download, Print, Or View Online

Anantha Anilkumar

Here you’ll find all our Year 5 maths worksheets, and Year 5 maths tests that are suitable for use during classroom lessons and as homework.

  • What to expect from our Year 5 Maths worksheets

These KS2 maths worksheets cover every part of the Year 5 primary maths curriculum, to help your children practise and gain confidence in their understanding ahead of Year 6 and the KS2 SATs . Their focus is on retrieval practice – going over topics that children should already have covered and helping them strengthen their knowledge and understanding.

Most of our worksheets come in pdf format, and all of them are printable. But if you’re running out of printer ink, they can be viewed online too.

Every Year 5 maths test or worksheet comes with its own answer sheet, and guidance from the National Curriculum is included wherever it might be needed (for example, if there might be more than one correct answer for a question). Some worksheets also include model answers to help children break down the best way to solve a problem.

Note: The National Curriculum does not specify any place value teaching for Year 5. However this is often a good time to begin revising the topic (among others) in preparation for the KS2 SATs. Have a look at these place value worksheets as part of your revision.

Similarly, addition and subtraction work is largely an extension of what was covered in previous years. Take a look at our collection of addition and subtraction worksheets for practice materials for these topics.

Our Year 5 maths tests includes two assessments – one arithmetic paper and one reasoning paper – with SATS style questions created by our curriculum experts, answers and a mark scheme with detailed explanations of how to solve each question.

Both papers should take about one hour to complete, and cover every part of the curriculum, from place value to geometry and 3d shapes. This makes them useful for checking children’s overall understanding of the maths they’ve learned in Year 5, as well as providing them with exam practice.

2. Try the rounding challenge

Rounding is an important skill your child will be expected to use to estimate and to check answers to calculations.

You could help your child to practise rounding with the calculations below. For each sum, you and your child could round the numbers to the nearest 10, 100, or 1000 in order to estimate the answer. Which one of you can get the estimate fastest? Then ask your child to work out the correct answer. Whose estimate was closest to the real answer? You can add an extra element of challenge by using a stopwatch or timer!

More about Year 5 Maths Questions …

The Year 5 maths curriculum covers a wide range of skills in: number, shape and data. All skills and understanding progresses on from the Year 4 maths learning objectives introducing new learning for the learners to develop.

Year 5 NUMBER …

The four operations – addition, subtraction, multiplication and division take small steps towards Year 6 maths such as introducing long multiplication with a 2-digit number. Place value is extended to larger values too, supporting other areas of the maths curriculum such as read and write numbers up to one million .

Year 5 SHAPE …

Learners knowledge of shape builds on Year 4 maths including a more detailed understanding of angles , 2D shapes and 3D shapes . These skills can be used together in support of a more varied application across multiple learning objectives. These connections and relationships with one another are identified allowing for greater coverage of the full curriculum.

Year 5 DATA …

Year 5 offers a more detailed coverage of representing data in tables, charts and graphs, where learners are expected to both read and interpret information in all types of graphs and charts .

All learning objectives are supported by a Home Learning pack and iQ mastery questions challenge learners’ understanding, application and confidence. The Home Learning packs provide first class opportunities for effective intervention and an ever growing library of help videos for Year 5 maths is available on the MyMiniMaths YouTube channel in support of quality learning.

Daily Maths Word Problems - Year 5 teaching resource

Advance Your Students’ Problem-Solving Skills

This set of problem-solving questions has been designed to support teachers when teaching students about problem-solving in mathematics. It provides students with the opportunity to work through 20 maths word problems, identifying the important information and how they can work it out using a variety of methods.

An answer sheet has been included. Use this resource in conjunction with the Daily Maths Problems PowerPoint.

NAPLAN Year 5 Maths Preparation

These simple problem-solving questions are also a great way to help students understand some of the word problems they may encounter when sitting NAPLAN. It’s important to give your students strategies that they can draw on when presented with a word problem in maths. Using these problem-solving questions here are some suggested strategies you can empower your students with:

  • Daily practice. After spending time explicitly explaining how to work through a word problem – use the word problems from these worksheets as daily problem-solving practice.
  • Teach them the strategies. There are many ways students can solve maths word problems such as; breaking the word problem into smaller parts and drawing a picture to visualise what the problem is asking.
  • Underline. Teach your students to underline the important parts of a maths word problem – remind them that there is often trick information in word problems that they don’t need to solve the problem.

How to Use This Resource

Once you download the PDF, there are many ways you can use the resource. Here are some suggestions:

  • Print and create booklets for your students to use.
  • Cut and laminate each word problem and have students use mini whiteboard markers to solve one problem a day.

Expected level of development

Australian Curriculum Mathematics V9 : AC9M5N06, AC9M5N07

Numeracy Progression : Interpreting fractions: P8, Multiplicative strategies: P7

At this level, students learn efficient ways to multiply and divide numbers using increasingly sophisticated strategies. They develop flexible strategies to solve multiplication facts and related division facts and consolidate automatic recall. They identify and describe factors and multiples of whole numbers and use them to solve problems.

Use classroom talks to help students work collaboratively to build their strategies to solve multiplication problems.

  • Show how a doubling strategy can simplify a multiplication problem.
  • Model place value partitioning strategies to multiply larger numbers by one-digit and two-digit numbers. For example, to multiply 24 x 12, first multiply 10 x 24 and then multiply 2 x 24 and add the two products together. Use area models and arrays to show partitioning.
  • Make explicit how factors can be used to simplify calculations. For example, 15 x 16 can be simplified into 5 x 3 x 4 x 4 and rearranged to 5 x 4 x 3 x 4 = 240 to make the calculation easier. The rearranging of these numbers contextualises the commutative and distributive properties of multiplication.

Provide opportunities to solve division problems presented as number stories in familiar contexts. Where there is a remainder, have students interpret the meaning and represent the problem. Discuss the situations where a remainder needs to be rounded, for example, when dealing with passenger numbers on a train.

Encourage students to solve simple division problems mentally drawing on the known multiplication facts. For example, when given the problem of sharing 36 stickers between 9 people, students see the problem as 36 divided by 9 and use their times table facts of 9 x 4 = 36 to work out how many 9s make 36.

Teaching and learning summary:

  • Develop efficient strategies for multiplying and dividing numbers.
  • Connect concrete, visual and abstract representations of multiplicative situations using familiar contexts.
  • Interpret and represent the remainder in division calculations.

year 5 maths problem solving

  • solve problems involving multiplication of large numbers by one-digit or two-digit numbers using efficient mental strategies, written strategies and appropriate digital technologies
  • solve problems involving division by a one-digit number, including those that result in a remainder
  • identify and describe factors and multiples of whole numbers and use them to solve problems.

Some students may:

  • say ‘3 into 15’ to solve the division problem, which may indicate they have limited understanding of the meaning of division
  • have little understanding of what the remainder represents
  • have difficulty matching materials and representations to number problems
  • get confused when a division answer includes a zero, for example, when dividing 6,540 by 5, they don’t record 0 as it means nothing so write the answer as 138 instead of 1,308.

To address these problems, use classroom talks to show different representations of division, using correct terminology when discussing division problems, and using efficient strategies to solve the problems. Discuss problems with and without remainders and use examples to show what the remainder means.

The Learning from home activities are designed to be used flexibly by teachers, parents and carers, as well as the students themselves. They can be used in a number of ways including to consolidate and extend learning done at school or for home schooling.

Learning intention

  • We are learning that division is the ‘sharing’ of items, and that sometimes division can result in remainders if the items can’t be evenly shared.

Why are we learning about this?

  • Being able to fluently divide numbers and explain my thinking builds number sense and is helpful when solving more complex problems.
  • Open the link to the Remainders game.
  • Watch the video to learn how to play the game.
  • Collect the resources listed below the video. Note: if you don’t have counters, find 24 objects that are the same items, for example, paperclips or pasta shells.
  • Play the game with a friend or family member.

Success criteria

  • solve problems involving division and explain my thinking.

SCOTUS ruling on homeless camps opens door to tougher crackdowns in Utah

Friday’s ruling will give cities more latitude in enforcing no-camping ordinances..

(Trent Nelson | The Salt Lake Tribune) A "No Camping" sign at Taufer Park in Salt Lake City on Thursday, Nov. 9, 2023.

Salt Lake City could get tougher on its enforcement of homeless camps following a new U.S. Supreme Court ruling.

Friday’s 6-3 court decision along ideological lines found that enforcing no-camping laws on public property does not constitute “cruel and unusual punishment,” giving cities the option to enforce camping bans regardless of shelter availability.

“Homelessness is complex. Its causes are many,” Justice Neil Gorsuch wrote in the court’s majority opinion. “So may be the public policy responses required to address it … A handful of federal judges cannot begin to ‘match’ the collective wisdom the American people possess in deciding ‘how best to handle’ a pressing social question like homelessness.”

The decision is a break from a previous ruling by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in another case. In that instance, the appellate court ruled that governments may not enforce camping bans if no shelter options are available. Salt Lake City, while not in the 9th Circuit, has relied on this ruling to justify its approach to camping enforcement.

Authorities in Utah’s capital sharpened their focus late last year in cracking down on homeless camps . Under the Salt Lake City Police Department’s enforcement initiative , officers focus on moving people out of public places and into shelter when it is available. Enforcement relaxes when shelters are full.

Could more crackdowns be coming?

Now, under the high court’s ruling, the legal justification Salt Lake City used for its enforcement approach has vanished, and homeless camps may be broken up regardless of whether shelter options exist.

It isn’t yet clear whether that will happen.

The city attorney’s office is still reviewing the court’s decision and how it will impact camping ordinances, Andrew Wittenberg, a spokesperson for Mayor Erin Mendenhall, said in a statement.

“Salt Lake City has and will continue to enforce local ordinances to keep public spaces open, clean and safe for everyone to enjoy,” Wittenberg said. “We continue to be committed to working with our county and state partners to address homelessness most directly through evidenced-based interventions including housing, emergency shelter and coordinated services that are in too short supply.”

(Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune) A homeless camp is pictured next to the Jordan River across from Cottonwood Park in Salt Lake City on Monday, April 29, 2024.

The city could face pressure from the state to take a more hardline approach. This year, legislators allowed the state board of homeless services to divert funding from cities that host shelters if local authorities don’t enforce camping bans.

Salt Lake City is eligible to receive nearly $3 million annually for hosting homeless shelters, and it could get more cash for hosting winter overflow shelter space.

It’s also unclear whether state officials intend to require cities to enforce camping bans even when no shelter is available. A spokesperson for Gov. Spencer Cox’s office did not respond to a request for comment.

State homelessness coordinator Wayne Niederhauser said in a statement that his office is still working to determine how Friday’s decision will affect local governments.

“The Utah Office of Homeless Services prioritizes the need for shelter and housing for those experiencing homelessness,” Niederhauser said. “They are our family, friends and neighbors and deserving of human dignity. No one should have to live in a place not meant for human habitation, and it is essential to enforce local laws for the safety of all in our communities.”

Advocacy groups split on court ruling

(Rick Egan | The Salt Lake Tribune) As authorities gather near a homeless camp off Victory Road in Salt Lake City, people drag their belongings away from the site, Thursday, Dec. 14, 2023.

Solutions Utah, a group focused on homelessness policy in the Beehive State, lauded the court’s ruling and called on cities to take a tougher approach to enforcement.

“With this enforceable authority, cities can keep their parks, streets, sidewalks and other public places open, safe, clean and accessible for their intended uses,” the organization said in a statement. “Now the state of Utah, with its communities, cities, and counties, has the legal responsibility to enforce anti-camping and related laws, and we encourage all to do so.”

Bill Tibbitts, deputy executive director of the nonprofit Crossroads Urban Center , said the court’s ruling could lead to cities criminalizing homelessness, which “never works.” Unless there’s a bigger jail, he added, authorities will never be able to arrest everyone who needs to sleep outside.

If those who need tents in the frigid winter months aren’t able to use them, they could die, he said. Stricter enforcement, he contended, would result in unsheltered people hiding in public areas so they are able to sleep.

“You may not like seeing a tent,” he said, “but you’re probably going to be less happy if people are pushed out of the parks and you find them hiding in the bushes in your front yard.”
