The news Pontins was closing its Prestatyn site with "immediate effect" came as a shock to many on Thursday afternoon. While the holiday park has been much maligned over the years it is also something of an institution having welcomed holidaymakers for five decades.
Owners Britannia have been criticised for their failure to invest more in the site. MP Dr James Davies had previously said that they should invest in the site or sell it on to a company that would.
Despite its many critics the latest development came out the blue. They posted on their Facebook page on Thursday, to say: "We regret to inform you that our parks in Prestatyn and Camber Sands will be closing with immediate effect. Customers whose bookings will be affected by these closures will be contacted by our team and refunded. We apologise for any inconvenience caused."

Britannia aren't known for their open approach and have not responded to any requests to comment on what will happen next. Dr Davies has spoken to an assistant at the company but they could not provide an idea as to why the site has closed, whether this is permanent, and what the future plans for it may be.
We have looked at some of the potential options for the site.
What next for Pontins Prestatyn site?
1: Reopening by Britannia?
What isn't absolutely clear with this move is whether this is a permanent closure or a temporary move. It looks like they've pulled the plug on the site completely but there is the possibility the place will just close for winter when bills are high and guest numbers lower. Come the spring then maybe they'll be a comeback by Britannia. In one way this would be good as jobs would return but the site has such a poor reputation many want Britannia gone for good.
2: Snapped up by another group
This would be the optimum scenario if it was picked up by a group that was intent on investing in this site and helping it realise it potential. It's situated in the wonderful spot next to a fantastic beach and Prestatyn is only a short trip away from the key north west of England markets. In the right hands this place could be fantastic.
Some of the big players like Haven and Lyons already have sites in the town but it wouldn't rule them out completely. There are other growing regional and UK brands that might want to add this to their portfolios although significant investment is needed.
MP James Davies said: "The Pontins site has been in a sad state for many years now but I believe that with the right investment, it could be a great success. Immediately pre-pandemic, I joined MPs representing Pontins sites around the country in calling for Britannia Hotels to sell these to a company prepared to try to turn them around.
"If this is now the plan, it would be good news for Prestatyn. The town has a lot going for it, including a Blue Flag beach, and it has the potential to make more of this."
This is a prime site near the coastline but that brings advantages and disadvantages when it comes to housing. Homes are much needed and the demand would be there to live by the seaside if the site was bought and redeveloped.
But the proximity of the coastline - and one at risk from flooding - would make securing planning difficult, and that risk could also deter investors and potential homebuyers. It's an unlikely future option for the site.
The area is packed with holiday parks but there is always demand for more activities - particularly something not weather dependent. The site's proximity to thousands of holidaymakers and also daytrippers from England could make it a prime site for leisure - or at least a mix of leisure and accommodation.
5: Asylum seeker site
This has been widely put forward on social media and Britannia won't comment to ease those rumours. It would also fit with a similar move last winter when the Hilton in the Conwy Valley was taken over by the Home Office.
BUT the Home Office has told North Wales Live directly there are "no plans to use the site as a form of asylum accommodation". The MP has also had the same assurance from UK Government Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick.
