SSRS and Managed Service Account - impossible to configure?

We are trying to configure Reporting Services to use a Managed Service Account. The environment is:

Server: Windows 2008 R2 SP1 Reporting Services: SQL Server 2012 (version 11.0.6567.0)

Currently, SSRS runs as a domain service account, but we would like to change to running as an MSA. The SQL Server instance and agent have both been successfully changed to use an MSA.

When I try to change the service account to an MSA, via Reporting Services Configuration Manager, I receive an error:

Microsoft.ReportingServices.WmiProvider.WMIProviderException: The account name is not valid. Specify an account in the form domain\alias. ---> System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x8004021D): Exception from HRESULT: 0x8004021D --- End of inner exception stack trace --- at Microsoft.ReportingServices.WmiProvider.RSWmiAdmin.ThrowOnError(ManagementBaseObject mo) at Microsoft.ReportingServices.WmiProvider.RSWmiAdmin.SetWindowsServiceIdentity(String accountName, SecureString password, Boolean useBuiltinAccount) at ReportServicesConfigUI.WMIProvider.RSReportServerAdmin.SetWindowsServiceIdentity(String accountName, SecureString password, Boolean useBuiltinAccount)

My question is simple:

Has anyone successfully changed the SSRS service account to use a Managed Service Account? If so, how?!

Yes you can run SSRS with a Managed Service Account.

I would double check that your MSA is installed on your SSRS server. You can do so with Powershell.

If your SSRS server is not listed, you will need to install the MSA on the server. This needs to be run locally (on SSRS server). You MUST be domain admin to run Install-ADServiceAccount successfully.

To add to the answer in Configuring SQL Server to use Managed Service Accounts (in PowerShell) by Robin Watkins , there is a 5th option (if you get up to Windows 2012 and your AD level is on Windows 2012), for the service account: Group Managed Service Accounts.These work for clustered instances.

The group Managed Service Account provides the same functionality (As the MSA) within the domain but also extends that functionality over multiple servers. When connecting to a service hosted on a server farm, such as Network Load Balance, the authentication protocols supporting mutual authentication require that all instances of the services use the same principal. When group Managed Service Account are used as service principals, the Windows operating system manages the password for the account instead of relying on the administrator to manage the password

I had similar issue before.

I had all SQL Services that I needed running on MSA or gMSA except for Reporting Services (SSRS); this stayed this way on Windows 2008 R2 and 2012. This issue went away when moved to Windows 2012 R2. In my experience, SSRS was the only service that would not run on MSA or gMSA on OS prior to Windows 2012 R2 but the database, analysis, agent, and integration services all worked ok with them even when not officially supported (MSA running with SQL Server 2008 R2).

At this link, https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/database-engine/configure-windows/configure-windows-service-accounts-and-permissions#MSA , it states:

To use a group managed service account for SQL Server 2014 or later, the operating system must be Windows Server 2012 R2 or later.

While it doesn't specifically state anything, something changed in the Windows 2012 R2 OS that allowed using MSA or gMSA for SSRS and I'm assuming it's related to the quote above. I just ran into a similar situation a few months ago during an upgrade/migration to SQL Server 2016. The original OS was running Windows 2012 and I tried everything I could to make it work but it never worked with SSRS until OS changed to Windows 2012 R2.

gMSAs are not officially supported to be used as a report server service account at the time of writing (19 September 2022). They can only be used at own risk.

This is noted in the documentation on SSRS:

Configure the Report Server Service Account (Report Server Configuration Manager) :

Group Managed Service Accounts (gMSAs) are not supported as a report server service account.

Fix SCCM Report Server cannot Open a Connection Error ConfigMgr | Endpoint Manager | Configuration Manager

Let’s see how to fix SCCM Report Server cannot Open a Connection to the Report Server Database Error. Configuration Manager has rich capabilities to collect lots of information from endpoints. Once collected this information is stored in the ConfigMgr SQL DB and retrieved through SSRS reports.

The SSRS report was giving the following error “ The report server cannot open a connection to the report server database “.

FIX SSRS Reporting Issue

Let’s check now how to fix this issue name or password is incorrect. I’m trying to check the DB connectivity using the following tool. Also, don’t miss the notes section below.

• Launch SQL Server Reporting Services Configuration Manager from the start menu

• Click on the Find button to check the available servers and Report server instances
• Click on the Connect button to continue.

• Make sure the SQL reporting service is running .

NOTE! – Report Server Web Service is not configured. Default values have been provided to you. To access these defaults simply press the APPLY button , or else change them and then press Apply .

• Wait to complete the configuration of the web service URL for the SSRS reporting service.

• Now the configuration is completed.
• Click on the Exit button.

• Click on Database
• Click on Change Credentials

NOTE! – Because it was giving the wrong user name or password error, you need to click on change credentials and enter the correct user name and password.

• Click on Test Connection
• Click on the Next button

• Enter the user name and password
• Click the Next button.

• Click the Next button to continue.

• Click on the Finish button.

NOTE! – This wizard won’t check the user name and password whether it’s incorrect or not. So be careful.

• Click on t he Exit button.

After changing the user name and password, you might get a different error if you have not configured the reporting service point role. You need to make sure that you configure A reporting services point from the Configuration Manager console.

I have upgraded SCCM database from 2008R2 to 2016SP1. SSRS also upgraded to 2016. Report Server is working fine.Reports are running but unable to detect SSRS in SCCM. Any specific reason?

Configure SSRS remotely - A connection to the computer cannot be established

I just installed the newest SQL Server Reporting Services 2017 using this instructions: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/reporting-services/install-windows/install-reporting-services?view=sql-server-2017

I have a Windows Server with SQL Server Express 2017.

I need to configure the Report Server remotely, but when I try to find the server from the Report Server Configuration Manager it just says that 'A connection to the computer cannot be established' (see image).

I tested this setup in two separate computers outside the domain (to configure remotely), and it worked fine, but it doesn't work in the Server that is within the domain.

But it still doesn't connect, any ideas of what's missing?

I have done the following tests:

• Report Server Configuration Manager connects fine if I connect locally
• SSMS connect fine remotely with either domain user or sa user
• I also disabled the firewall for the test and the error was still there

• You're sure the service is running after installation, and you're sure you can connect to the host over port 80 (or whatever port is running the SSRS web services)? –  Adam Commented Nov 26, 2018 at 5:07
• Will you need to be able to connect to port 80 - web services before you configure SSRS? I thought the actual Configuration client needed to do some work setting up the web portal while doing the set up first? –  gbdavid Commented Nov 26, 2018 at 14:30
• No, you need to be able to connect via WMI to configure the service. Port 80 (or whatever you have the sites like report manager listen on) is for after. See docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/reporting-services/report-server/… for the WMI config I'm talking about. –  Adam Commented Dec 3, 2018 at 4:02
• Yes, I guessed so. That's the link I've followed, but I even tried in a test VM windows Server, and then connecting to it remotely. I disabled firewall, and added everyone and anonymous to the DCOM and WMI permissions for report server, and nothing worked, I can only connect to it locally. I suspect there's an actual bug from Microsoft side, (or a block to SSRS and SQL server express) :( –  gbdavid Commented Dec 3, 2018 at 13:24

Symptom : When changing an SSL certificate inside of the SQL Server 2008 R2 Reporting Services Configuration Manager, you receive the following error:

Create certificate binding.

When you click on "Tell me more about the problem and how to resovle it." you receive the following:

Microsoft.ReportingServices.WmiProvider.WMIProviderException: An SSL binding already exists for the specified IP address and port combination. The existing binding uses a different certificate from the current request. Only one certificate can be used for each IP address and port combination. To correct the problem, either use the same certificate as the existing binding, or remove the existing SSL binding and create a new binding using the certificate of the current request. ---> System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x80040238): Exception from HRESULT: 0x80040238 --- End of inner exception stack trace --- at Microsoft.ReportingServices.WmiProvider.RSWmiAdmin.ThrowOnError(ManagementBaseObject mo) at Microsoft.ReportingServices.WmiProvider.RSWmiAdmin.CreateSSLCertificateBinding(String application, String certificateHash, String ipAddress, Int32 port) at ReportServicesConfigUI.WMIProvider.RSReportServerAdmin.CreateSSLCertificateBinding(UrlApplication app, String certificateHash, String ipAddress, Int32 port)

This error really sucks and the reason behind it is that Microsoft just didn't do a good job removing/unbinding SSL certificates from an interface.  Luckily, I have the solution to get you up and going...

• http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=7911
• Install the tools on your local machine or on the server.  You may get a warning about incompatibility if you install it on your Windows 7 machine.  I ignored this and things seem to work fine 😛  Just note if you do this, you will need to copy the following folder from your local machine to the server with SQL Server Reporting Services Configuration Manager:  C:\Program Files (x86)\Support Tools
• Open up a command prompt with Administrator privileges on the server with SQL Server 2008 R2 Reporting Services Configuration Manager
• cd "C:\Program Files (x86)\Support Tools"
• Start -> All Programs -> Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 -> Configuration Tools -> Reporting Services Configuration Manager
• Click on Web Service URL
• Click on the Advanced... button
• Remove any items listed inside of the " Multiple SSL Identities for the Report Server Web Servic e" box.
• You should see something like "SSL Certificate successfully deleted" -- If not, that is fine
• You should see something like "HttpDeleteServiceConfiguration completed with 0." -- If not, that is fine as long as the command above said it removed a certificate
• Go back to the Reporting Services Configuration Manager and select your SSL certificate in the  SSL Certificate dropdown.
• Click  Apply

At this point, your certificate should have bound to the interface successfully.

This is a dumb question from a newbie .. sorry ..

How do I know what my Report Server is called? (i.e. when prompted in Report Builder)

I can see various possibilities in Report Server Configuration Manager.

Is there an instruction set /tutorial for config of SSRS?

Maybe I have two ...?

Should I use a virtual service account or a domain/user account (on home notebook) ?

I get this log upon change from virtual to domain/user account:

Starting report server "SQLServerReportingServices" on ASUS_NOTEBOOK. The task completed successfully.

Stopping report server "SQLServerReportingServices" on ASUS_NOTEBOOK. The task completed successfully.

Reserving url http://+:80 The url was successfully reserved.

Removing url http://+:80 The url was successfully removed.

Starting report server "SSRS" on ASUS_NOTEBOOK. The task completed successfully.

Setting Windows Service Identity to Windows Account The Windows account information used to run the Windows service has been updated.

Stopping report server "SSRS" on ASUS_NOTEBOOK. The task completed successfully.

When I try to create a new reporting services database in ASUS_NOTEBOOK\MSSQLSERVER01  I get this error which I do not know how to resolve:

Microsoft.ReportingServices.WmiProvider.WMIProviderException: An error occurred when attempting to connect to the report server remote procedure call (RPC) end point. Verify that the Report Server Windows service is running, and then retry the operation.

---> System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException: The RPC server is not listening. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x800706B3)  --- End of inner exception stack trace ---  at Microsoft.ReportingServices.WmiProvider.RSWmiAdmin.ThrowOnError(ManagementBaseObject mo)  at Microsoft.ReportingServices.WmiProvider.RSWmiAdmin.GenerateDatabaseScript(String databaseName, Int32 lcid, Boolean isSharePointIntegrated, String& script)  at ReportServicesConfigUI.WMIProvider.RSReportServerAdmin.GenerateDatabaseScript(String databaseName, Int32 lcid, Boolean isSharePointIntegrated, String& script)

I have both SQL*Server 2012 and SQL*Server 2017 installed on same notebook .. Am starting to think I should remove both and just install a new clear SQL*Server 2017 (only) ..

You have two reporting services - one is running, one is not. For Report Builder, you would want to use the Report Server Web Service URL Did you install and leave to where you need to configure? The one you tried to create new databases doesn't look to be running. If you are having a hard time figuring out the different services and which is 2012 and which is 2017, you may want to have just one install to use and get more familiar with each of the services. There are articles on configuring Reporting Services but I suspect some of what you are running into is related to having two sets (2012 and 2017) installed. The different configuration steps are listed in the following documentation: Configure and Administer a Report Server

I managed to get SSRS working on home notebook, in terms of Web Browser display. I uninstalled SQL*Server 2012 .. just leaving me with SQL*Server 2017. I uninstalled "Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services" via Control Panel and "programs and features" option .. I re-installed "Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services" (i.e. I downloaded and ran item SQLServerReportingServices.exe )

After this fresh install ... the account that the "SQL Server Reporting Services" service runs as is: "NT SERVICE\SQLServerReportingServices" .. i'm not sure what the password for this is .. or if I am meant to know (or need to know) what the password for this account is ..(?)

The URL (for me) is  http://ASUS_NOTEBOOK:80/ReportServer (which changes to  http://asus_notebook/Reports/browse/ upon choosing this) ..

NT SERVICE\SQLServerReportingServices is a virtual account which is used when you use one of the built in local accounts (you used local system). In the previous screenshot, you were looking at it in Services. You never want to mess with the SQL Server service accounts using this. For Reporting Services, use the Reporting Services Configuration Manager. Otherwise for the others, use SQL Server Configuration manager. When  you use those tools, it will manage the necessary permissions. When you use builtin accounts, you don't need to specify passwords as you won't have those - it's managed by the OS. An excellent online training course for SSRS by Lynda.com is  ": Advanced SQL Server: Reporting Services " I completed this one and I have learnt SSRS quite well by now. SSRS is running fine on home notebook including the web console part of SSRS.

How to resolve this "Microsoft.ReportingServices.WmiProvider.WMIProviderException:...." error?

I keep getting this error.

I'm setting up a remote Report Service that points to a SQL Server 2019 server in another box. I went through the whole process of "Change Database" in the Report Server Configuration Manager. I'm able to connect to the remote SQL Server 2019 Standard Edition fine.

However, when I tried to restore the database encryption keys, I get this error.

In the Event Log, I also see these errors.

Some background information. The Report Server database was migrated from SQL Server 2014 Enterprise Edition to a SQL Server 2019 Standard Edition. Since 2014 allowed more than one instances of Report Service, on SQL Server 2019 we have no choice but to put this RS on another box and connect to the Report Server database remotely. This is where I run into a ton of issues and errors. Any help is much appreciated!

I recently encountered a similar issue while attempting to create a database using Reporting Services Configuration Manager 2019. The problem stemmed from another application occupying the default port (8082) used by Reporting Services.

Here's how I resolved it:

Navigate to the Reporting Services installation folder, typically located at C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services\SSRS\RSHostingService.

Locate and open the 'config.json' file within this directory.

In the 'config.json' file, you'll find references to 'managementURL' and 'listenerURL,' both using port 8082. Update both of these to a different port, such as 8083 (or any other available port you prefer).

• The first command is designed to release any applications using port 8083:

I have faced the same problem recently. In my case, the error would show while creating the database from the Reporting Services Configuration Manager 2019.

The problem was caused because another application was making use of port 8082 which is the default port for reporting services.

the fix was the following:

On the Reporting Services installation folder, go to directory: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services\SSRS\RSHostingService

Then, open file config.json Notice that the managementURL and listenerURL uses port 8082. I updated both to 8083 (it can be any other port you are sure is not being used).

Then, I ran the commands:

(The first command is just to remove any application that could have been using 8083) netsh int ipv4 add excludedportrange protocol=tcp startport=8083 numberofports=1

netsh http add urlacl url=http://+:8083/ user="NT SERVICE\SQLServerReportingServices"

• Add local administrator rights to the service account running the SSRS instance
• Switch the account to local service/local system
• Start the reporting services and configure.
• Now change the service account to domain account.

Could step 5 be "remove account from local administrator rights"? Will RSCM behave normally or must the service account be local admin indefinitely?

Thanks, Yoyazhao! I got further this time. However, after step 4, I clicked on the Web Server Service URL and after 15 minutes of stalling, the page finally showed this message.

• Make sure that SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) is up and running.
• Make sure that the user who accesses the report with you has the "folder/report" permission .
• Ensure that the service account of the SSRS instance (which can be found in SQL Server Configuration Manager or SQL Server Reporting Services Configuration Manager) has db_owner access rights to the respective ReportServer and ReportServerTempDB databases.

If all the above operations are normal, please check the error log at the corresponding time when the problem is reproduced. In addition to the above message, you will find more detailed information in it. For example, you may see other error messages: " The transaction log of the database'ReportServer' is full "... But for your problem, it is more likely to be a timeout issue. The timeout problem is most likely that the account you are currently using lacks certain permissions.

The account service I used is in the Local Administrators group on both the SSRS box and ReportServer database box. As soon as the SSRS is up and running, I see this error in the log.

Error Number:-2,State:0,Class:11 2021-05-11 13:01:13.3116|WARN|13|Symmetric Key Encryption access data is missing or corrupt| RequestID = s_9e875818-00c0-49e9-8d57-1dbb79fd22b1 System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException (0x80131904): Execution Timeout Expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding. ---> System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception (0x80004005): The wait operation timed out at System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection.OnError(SqlException exception, Boolean breakConnection, Action`1 wrapCloseInAction)

I have searched all the logs and I do not find this error message: "The transaction log of the database'ReportServer' is full". However, I do see a lot of the above message in the log as soon as the RS starts up.

Another thing I'm quite confused is that I used the following command to remove the previous report service machine key from the ReportServerTest database.

However, once I put in the domain/accountName for the Service Account in the RS box and restart the RS, the previous RS instance machine key is back in the ReportServerTest database. And once this old machine key is back, I see this message in the Web Service URL page.

Why is the old machine key keeps coming back even though I've deleted it?

I also keep getting this error below in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services\SSRS\LogFiles\RSManagement_* _ ** _ _**.log file.

The "WARN" mentioned in the log file usually does not affect the use, and is different from "Error". If you want to try to delete the encryption key, please follow the steps below: 1.Open SQL Serrver Management Studio>Report Server>New Query:

2.Restart the service and its work.

Regarding the error message, please refer to my previous comment and check the log file for supplementary explanation of the error. Check permissions and check whether the database server hosting the ReportServer database has disk space problems. Regards, Joy

I got this message when trying to delete the key in SQL Server Management Studio.

The account service I'm running SSRS has local Administrator privilege on both SSRS and ReportServer database server. This domain account also has sysadmin privilege on the SQL Server 2019 as well as db_owner of the ReportServerTest and ReportServerTestTempDB databases. So I really don't know what else it needs.

Yes, I tried that. It didn't work. The "Executing query..." at the bottom of the screen keeps spinning but nothing else happened on the screen.

Configuring SSRS 2019 Database Fails

We are trying to install SSRS 2019 on Windows Server 2016. For the SSRS Database the SQL Server 2016 is on another Windows Server 2016. Both the server are on the same domain and are both pingable to each other.

While configuring the database, get the below error. Have checked articles which point to :

• RPC service should be running on the database and the reporting sever... This is running.
• DCOM service should be running on database and the reporting sever... This is running.
• Giving Administrator rights to the service account in which the SSRS service... This is given.

Any help would be highly appreciated!

• I assume that the SSRS Service account is running under a domain account? Also, though I can't find any specific documentation to back it up it not being supported, why are you running SSRS 2019 against a SQL Server 2016 host? –  Thom A Commented Dec 6, 2021 at 13:13
• It was running under the NTService Account, which I changed it after reading your suggestion, but still the error persist. SSRS 2019 with SQL 2016 is used becuase of licensing reasons. Since the SSRS 2019 POrtal is on one server and the SSRS 2019 Database is on another server, the only way to create the SSRS database, was to install the SSRS 2019 on the database server and create the database.

This Works fine!

But in PowerBI Server, this problem doesn't exsits
