Do I really need to write a cover letter? In my role as a pharmacy recruiter and career coach, I am often asked whether a cover letter is a necessary accompaniment to a CV as part of a job application. Some people believe that cover letters just repeat information from their CVs — others are concerned that recruiters never even read them. However, if you can write a cover letter that explains why you are the right candidate for the job you want, you can ensure that your application stands out for the right reasons.

Cover letters — what’s the point?

Traditionally, you would send a CV and cover letter by post in response to a job application or as a speculative approach. Your cover letter would introduce you in a professional sense, explain why you were applying for the position and provide some evidence of your competency for the role.

Nowadays, applications are less frequently sent by post — they are usually emailed or completed online. Despite this, presenting a professional cover letter is still part of the established protocol. If you are responding to a job advertisement in today’s competitive pharmacy jobs market, it is likely you will be one of many applicants (sometimes one of hundreds). Therefore, you need to do everything you can to ensure your application stands out, which includes an excellent cover letter.

Consider the hiring manager’s point of view

Before you start writing your CV and cover letter, you need to ask yourself: “What would the hiring manager want to see in the application?”

One way to find out is to simply call and ask the hiring manager or recruiter exactly what they would like to see. A recent survey of US employers by Saddleback College in America has shown that they can have differing views on whether a cover letter is important, how long it should be and what information it should contain. By asking the employer directly, you can find out their specific views and tailor your cover letter accordingly.

Laying out your letter

There are no set rules for your cover letter, but a good structure is important. The cover letter is telling a story about you and, like all good stories, it should have a beginning, middle and end.

The beginning

If the application is being posted then use a standard letter format, with your own address and date on the right and the organisation’s contact name and address on the left. For email applications, put your cover letter in the main body of the email and add your CV as an attachment. Your cover letter can be ignored more easily if you attach it as a separate document.

You should always try to address your cover letter to a specific person when possible. This will be easier if you have already called the hiring manager. Research by Forum3 (now called Charity People), a not-for-profit recruitment company for the third sector, suggests you are 10–15% more likely to receive a reply if you address your application to a person and 5% more likely to get an interview [1] . If you do not know the name of the person, then use a professional address such as “Dear Sir or Madam”.

Immediately after addressing the reader, you should state the purpose of the application, so that the reader can quickly understand the reason for the email. For example, “Reference: Application for Band 6 hospital pharmacist role”. This could also be included as the subject line of the email.

The first paragraph should describe what your current professional situation is and why you are applying for the position. This paragraph should also include any research you have done into the role or organisation, including anyone you have spoken to, any site visits you have undertaken and the name of anyone who may have referred you. If you have taken the time to research the organisation and the role, this could be a key differentiator for your application. However, you should avoid making generic statements, such as “I want to join your esteemed company”. Make sure anything you say about an organisation is relevant to them and based on the research you have undertaken.

Your cover letter should demonstrate to the reader that you have the key skills and experience relevant to the particular role. You can do this by providing specific examples, tailored to the requirements listed in the job description, of when you have demonstrated these from your own experience to date. Choose three or four of these relevant examples that each tell a story about your skills, experience or traits and provided a positive outcome for the stakeholders involved in the situation.

These examples could come from any part of your life, as long as they are relevant. Newly qualified pharmacists will likely use examples from their pharmacy placements, academia, part-time work and also extra-curricular activities, in order to demonstrate a range of skills. A more experienced pharmacist candidate would generally choose examples from their work history because it is the most relevant. However, sometimes it is appropriate to bring in other examples, such as voluntary work.

Always try to use an active voice when explaining your achievements, because this serves to make the reader feel that you were in control in these situations. Additionally, try to avoid making vague or generic statements that could apply to any applicant.

If an achievement is strong enough to be included in your cover letter, it should be repeated on your CV. Try not to repeat examples word-for-word on both documents — instead, try to interpret them differently. Sometimes, due to time constraints, the hiring manager may bypass your cover letter and go straight to your CV, which could mean they miss your best examples. In addition, repetition will serve to reinforce these key messages like a sales brochure would, which is, in essence, what your CV and cover letter are.

In your final paragraph, thank the reader for taking the time to read your application and summarise why you feel you are a good fit for the role, based on your skills and experience. State how and when you can be contacted with regards to arranging an interview and then make sure you are available when you say you will be.

Sign off the letter professionally with “Yours sincerely” (to a specific person) or “Yours faithfully” (to an unnamed person), followed by your name.

Formatting your letter

In terms of format, a cover letter is usually written as a traditional letter, laid out in paragraphs. It is different to your CV, which is an abbreviated document that uses various techniques to draw the eye to the most important parts quickly and make the document as succinct as possible. In your cover letter, keep your language concise and purposeful. To achieve this, you may need to redraft your letter several times.

The grammar, spelling and formatting of your cover letter is just as important as the content of the document, so make sure it is perfect. Particularly, ensure you have spelt names and company names correctly and there are no typing errors. Research from student recruitment website StudentGems.com suggests half of employers discard job applications that contain spelling or formatting errors.

Choose a standard, well known and professional font, such as Arial, Verdana, Calibri, Times New Roman or Trebuchet. This will make the letter easier to read and will also support applicant tracking systems that may not be able to pick up lesser-known fonts. Keep your font size between 10 and 12 for ease of reading.

Through my own experience of recruiting pharmacists, I have observed that the standard of today’s pharmacy job applications is generally quite poor. If you spend time putting together a strong application, which includes an excellent cover letter, then it will stand out to an employer and increase your chances of securing the role.

[1] The company has since rebranded as  www.charitypeople.co.uk and the research is no longer available online.

How to write a Pharmacy Assistant cover letter

A simple step-by-step guide to writing your very own winning cover letter.

How to write a cover letter

Write your cover letter in the body of an email/message

When you send a cover letter with a job application, you should always write your message into the body of your email – or the body of the messaging system if you are sending via a job website.

Why do this?

Simply because you want to get your message seen as soon as the recruiter opens your application.

If you attach the cover letter as a separate item, this means the recipient will have to open it before they can read it – slowing down the process and potentially causing frustration along the way.

So, write your cover note in the body of your email/message to ensure you make an instant connection with the reader.

Write cover letter in body of email

Start with a friendly greeting

Cover letter address

To start building rapport with the recruiter or hiring manager right away, lead with a friendly greeting.

Try to strike a balance between professional and personable.

Go with something like…

  • Hi [insert recruiter name]
  • Hi [insert department/team name]

Stay away from old-fashioned greetings like “Dear sir/madam ” unless applying to very formal companies – they can come across as cold and robotic.

How to find the contact’s name?

Addressing the recruitment contact by name is an excellent way to start building a strong relationship. If it is not listed in the job advert, try to uncover it via these methods.

  • Check out the company website and look at their  About page. If you see a hiring manager, HR person or internal recruiter, use their name. You could also try to figure out who would be your manager in the role and use their name.
  • Head to LinkedIn , search for the company and scan through the list of employees. Most professionals are on LinkedIn these days, so this is a good bet.

Identify the role you are applying for

Once you’ve opened up the cover letter with a warm greeting to start building a relationship, it is time to identify which role you want to apply for.

Recruiters are often managing multiple vacancies, so you need to ensure you apply to the correct one.

Be very specific and use a reference number if you can find one.

  • I am interested in applying for the position of Pharmacy Assistant with your company.
  • I would like to apply for the role of Sales assistant (Ref: 406f57393)
  • I would like to express my interest in the customer service vacancy within your retail department
  • I saw your advert for a junior project manager on Reed and would like to apply for the role.

Highlight your suitability

The sole objective of your cover letter is to motivate recruiters into to opening your CV. And you achieve this by quickly explaining your suitability to the roles you are applying for.

Take a look at the job descriptions you are applying to, and make note of the most important skills and qualifications being asked for.

Then, when crafting your cover letter, make your suitability the central focus.

Explain why you are the best qualified candidate, and why you are so well suited to carry out the job.

This will give recruiters all the encouragement they need to open your CV and consider you for the job.

Cover letter tips

Keep it short and sharp

A good cover letter is short and sharp, getting to the point quickly with just enough information to grab the attention of recruiters.

Ideally your cover letter should be around 4-8 sentences long – anything longer will risk losing the attention of time-strapped recruiters and hiring managers .

Essentially you need to include just enough information to persuade the reader to open up your CV, where the in-depth details will sit.

Sign off professionally

To round of your cover letter, add a professional signature to the bottom, giving recruiters your vital contact information.

This not only gives various means of contacting you, it also looks really professional and shows that you know how to communicate in the workplace.

Include the following points;

  • A friendly sign off – e.g. “Warm regards”
  • Your full name
  • Phone number (one you can answer quickly)
  • Email address
  • Profession title
  • Professional social network – e.g. LinkedIn

Here is an example signature;

Warm regards,

Gerald Baker Senior Accountant 07887500404 [email protected] LinkedIn

Quick tip : To save yourself from having to write your signature every time you send a job application email, you can save it within your email drafts, or on a separate document that you could copy in.

What to include in your Pharmacy Assistant cover letter

Here’s what kind of content you should include in your Pharmacy Assistant cover letter…

The exact info will obviously depend on your industry and experience level, but these are the essentials.

  • Your relevant experience – Where have you worked and what type of jobs have you held?
  • Your qualifications – Let recruiters know about your highest level of qualification to show them you have the credentials for the job.
  • The impact you have made – Show how your actions have made a positive impact on previous employers; perhaps you’ve saved them money or helped them to acquire new customers?

Secrets to Crafting a Captivating Experienced Pharmacist Cover Letter

When it comes to crafting a standout cover letter as a Pharmacist, one undeniable truth stands out: leveraging your  valuable experience can give you a major boost .

Yet, merely repeating the information contained in your resume won’t cut it.

To truly captivate hiring managers and secure that coveted opportunity, it’s crucial to master the art of writing an  engaging introduction  that makes recruiters want to find out more about you and read the rest of your application.

Writing a Stellar Cover Letter Introduction

Your cover letter introduction is quite possibly the first impression you make on potential employers. It serves as a concise  snapshot of your professional profile  and sets the tone for the rest of your letter.

To ensure your resume stands out from the competition, follow these  guidelines to draft a stellar introduction :

  • Begin with a captivating statement:  Open your introduction with a powerful and attention-grabbing sentence that instantly hooks the reader. Consider sharing a compelling patient success story, a relevant statistic featuring your impact in the field, or a thought-provoking question related to pharmaceutical advancements.
  • Express your passion for pharmacy:  Convey your genuine enthusiasm for the field of pharmacy and your commitment to patient care. Demonstrate your understanding of the critical role pharmacists play in healthcare and showcase your dedication to improving patients’ lives through the safe and effective use of medications.
  • Highlight your specialized expertise:  Indicate any specialized skills or certifications relevant to the pharmacy field, such as medication therapy management, compounding, or clinical pharmacy, and how they align with the requirements of the position.
  • Connect with the employer’s mission:  Research the organization you are applying to and understand its values and goals. Tailor your introduction to align with their mission and demonstrate how your skills and experiences directly contribute to their objectives.
  • Convey your commitment to continuous learning:  Highlight your dedication to staying updated with the latest advancements in pharmacy practice, including emerging trends, technologies, and evidence-based guidelines.
  • Indicate years of experience:  Emphasize the number of years you have worked as a Pharmacist, specifying the settings in which you have practiced, such as community pharmacy, hospital pharmacy, or clinical pharmacy.

Let’s see this advice in action:

I am writing to express my interest in the pharmacist position at [pharmacy name] as advertised on your company’s website. With a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from [college name] and five years of experience working in retail pharmacy environments, I have developed a strong foundation in medication dispensing, patient counseling, and pharmacy management. I believe my combination of technical skills, customer service experience, and passion for healthcare will make me a valuable addition to your team.

This version is professionally written and provides  specific information  about the candidate’s qualifications, points out relevant skills for a Pharmacist, and  expresses interest in the role  and the company.

It’s also written in a formal, respectful tone, which is appropriate for a cover letter.

I am submitting my application for your pharmacist job opening. I have experience in different pharmacy settings and hold a related degree. I have good people skills and am competent at multitasking. I am interested in working for your company.

In this case, the introduction doesn’t adequately convey the candidate’s qualifications or value. It’s  too vague  about the candidate’s experience and skills, and their interest in the company seems lukewarm rather than enthusiastic.

The lack of necessary details hinders the candidate’s ability to successfully present their suitability for the desired position.

How to Write a Compelling Pharmacist Cover Letter for Entry-Level Positions

Writing a Pharmacist cover letter when you have little or no experience can be challenging, but it doesn’t have to hold you back. In this section, you’ll learn about  smart strategies  you can use to impress recruiters with your knowledge of the pharmaceutical business.

Let’s dive in!

Emphasize Your Proficiency With Pharmacy Software Systems

Proficiency with pharmacy software systems has become  increasingly vital for   Pharmacists.

From dispensing software to electronic health record (EHR) systems, these technologies play a  crucial role  in optimizing workflows, enhancing patient care, and ensuring accurate medication management.

Set yourself apart as a tech-savvy and highly capable Pharmacist by mastering one or more of the applications from the following list. Showcase them on your cover letter and on your  Pharmacist resume  to stand out from other candidates:

  • Dispensing software systems:  Rx30 and PioneerRx. They are used to efficiently process prescriptions and manage inventory, ensuring seamless pharmacy operations.
  • Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems:  Epic and Cerner. Utilized for patient profiles, reviewing medical histories, and documenting medication-related information accurately.
  • Pharmacy Management Systems (PMS):  QS/1 and Computer-Rx. These systems specialize in managing patient profiles, prescription records, and generating reports for streamlined workflow and regulatory compliance.
  • Pharmacy compounding software:  Fagron Compounding. Experienced Pharmacists use this software to accurately calculate ingredient quantities, create customized compound formulations, and ensure compliance with quality standards.

Take a look at this example to learn how to include it in your cover letter:

As part of my dedication to keeping pace with the latest advancements in the field, I have pursued a comprehensive course on PioneerRx. This course has equipped me with the proficiency to process prescriptions with utmost efficiency and to expertly manage inventory using this cutting-edge system. I am confident that these capabilities will contribute significantly to the smooth operation of your pharmacy and elevate the level of patient service.

Show Your Knowledge of Pharmacy Trends

Even though you may have no experience, you can still show your commitment and motivation with your knowledge of  pharmacy trends .

The following list contains a few  relevant topics  every aspiring Pharmacist should demonstrate their knowledge of:

  • Patient-Centric care:  This includes personalized medication therapies and patient education, aimed at improving patient outcomes.
  • Value-Based care:  It encourages Pharmacists to focus on the overall health outcomes of patients, rather than just the volume of prescriptions filled.
  • Technology integration:  Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data analytics aid in improving the accuracy and efficiency of medication delivery, patient monitoring, and outcomes.
  • Telehealth expansion:  The expansion of telehealth services has been a significant trend in the wake of the pandemic, facilitating remote patient monitoring and consultations. It’s a crucial tool in providing accessible healthcare, especially to those in remote or under-served areas.
  • Specialty drugs:  Medications in this category often require special handling and administration, creating a need for specialized knowledge and skills.
  • Regulatory changes:  Pharmacists must stay updated with these changes to ensure compliance and high-quality patient care.

Including one of these topics in your cover letter will undoubtedly pique the interest of potential employers.

However, ensure that you have comprehensively researched the chosen topic before discussing it in your application, as it may serve as a point of  discussion during your interview .

Here is one successful way to feature this knowledge in your cover letter:

Despite being at the beginning of my career, I have made it a priority to stay updated with the latest trends in the industry. A key trend that caught my attention is the rapid expansion of telehealth services in pharmacy practice.

Understanding its potential, I completed a course on digital health during my final year, where I learned about the implementation of telehealth services in pharmacy. This knowledge, coupled with my strong communication skills, will allow me to effectively provide remote consultations and support to patients, ensuring accessible and continuous care.

Key Takeaways to Elevate Your Pharmacist Cover Letter

Whether you are experienced or just starting out it’s essential to understand that your cover letter can’t just focus on your skills or work history. You’ll need a  well-rounded letter  to succeed.

Remember the following advice when writing your cover letter:

WARNING LETTER CMS #673150

February 07, 2024

Dear Manmeet Maggu:

During an inspection of your firm located in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada on June 3 through June 5, 2023, an investigator from the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) determined that your firm manufactures the Trexo Home and Trexo Plus medical devices, hereafter referred to as the Trexo devices, and offers the product for sale in the United States. Under section 201(h) of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (the Act), 21 U.S.C. § 321(h), this product is a device because it is intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions or in the cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease, or to affect the structure or any function of the body.

Based on the evidence collected during the June 2023 inspection and other information, including statements on your firm’s website, www.trexorobotics.com, last reviewed on October 05, 2023, FDA has determined that the Trexo devices are adulterated under section 501(f)(1)(B) of the Act, 21 U.S.C. § 351(f)(1)(B), because your firm does not have an approved application for premarket approval (PMA) in effect pursuant to section 515(a) of the Act, 21 U.S.C. § 360e(a), or an approved application for an investigational device exemption (IDE) under section 520(g) of the Act, 21 U.S.C. § 360j(g) for the device as described and marketed. The Trexo devices are also misbranded under section 502(o) the Act, 21 U.S.C. § 352(o), because your firm introduced or delivered for introduction this device into interstate commerce for commercial distribution without submitting a premarket notification to FDA as required by section 510(k) of the Act, 21 U.S.C. § 360(k), and 21 CFR 807.81.

You have listed the Trexo devices under classification regulation 21 CFR 890.1925. Devices classified under 21 CFR 890.1925, Isokinetic Testing and Evaluation System, are exempt from premarket notification unless they exceed the limitations of exemption at 21 CFR 890.9(a). Based on evidence collected during FDA’s inspection and a review of your firm’s website, FDA has determined that the Trexo devices are intended for uses that are different from those of legally marketed devices in the generic type of device under 21 CFR 890.1925, Isokinetic Testing and Evaluation System. Generic devices of this type are rehabilitative exercise devices intended for medical purposes, such as to measure, evaluate, and increase the strength of muscles and the range of motion of joints. However, your firm is marketing the Trexo devices for a different intended use; specifically, as a robotic powered gait training device to assist children with different levels of disability with ambulatory functions such as walking and standing. For example, statements made by your firm in labeling include the following:

• “Introducing Trexo Robotic legs to help children with mobility challenges get upright and walk independently.” • “Depending on your child’s needs, you may adjust the amount of weight bearing, the gait pattern, speed of the device, and level of assist. The active assist feature may be used by children who have some ability to initiate steps or walk.”

Because the Trexo is intended for uses that are different from those of legally marketed devices classified under 21 CFR 890.1925, it exceeds the limitations described in 21 CFR 890.9(a) thus requires approval prior to marketing.

In addition, your device appears to operate using a different fundamental scientific technology than legally marketed devices in the generic type of device under 21 CFR 890.1925. For example, based on information in the product manual, the Trexo device use actuators such as a “powered hip joint” (part #1) and a “powered knee joint” (part #5) to generate forces or torques to the swing leg that assist human movement. In contrast, devices classified under 21 CFR 890.1925 are typically stationary machines that consist of a chair or a bench with a resistance mechanism that allows for controlled resistance for measuring muscular performance such as strength, power, and resistance. To the extent the Trexo devices operate using different fundamental scientific technology than legally marketed devices in the generic type of device under 890.1925, they also exceed the limitations of exemption from section 510(k) of the Act as described in 21 CFR 890.9(b).

For a device requiring premarket approval, the notification required by section 510(k) of the Act, 21 U.S.C. § 360(k), is deemed satisfied when a PMA is pending before the agency. 21 CFR 807.81(b). The kind of information that your firm needs to submit in order to obtain approval or clearance for the device is described on the Internet at http://www.fda.gov/MedicalDevices/DeviceRegulationandGuidance/HowtoMarketYourDevice/default.htm. The FDA will evaluate the information that your firm submits and decide whether the product may be legally marketed.

This inspection also revealed that these devices are adulterated within the meaning of section 501(h) of the Act, 21 U.S.C. § 351(h), in that the methods used in, or the facilities or controls used for, their manufacture, packing, storage, or installation are not in conformity with the current good manufacturing practice requirements of the Quality System regulation found at Title 21, Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Part 820. We received a response from Manmeet Maggu dated June 30, 2023, concerning our investigator’s observations noted on the Form FDA 483 (FDA 483), List of Inspectional Observations, which was issued to your firm. We address this response below, in relation to each of the noted violations. These violations include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Failure to adequately establish and maintain procedures to control the design of the device in order to ensure that specified design requirements are met, as required by 21 CFR 820.30(a).

For example: Your firm’s procedures, QMS-S09-730-2, Design and Development Control, Rev 2 (Dated June 7, 2023) and QMS-S09-730-2, Design and Development Control, Rev 1 (Dated May 13, 2023), do not ensure that the design control process has been followed for the Trexo Home and Trexo Plus devices or that design validation was performed under defined operating conditions on the initial production units or the results from design validation were documented in the Device History File (DHF) of the devices.

We reviewed your firm’s response and concluded that it is not adequate.

Your firm indicated that CAR-39 is related to this observation. The proposed corrective actions include: 1) your firm will be continuing with design change activities according to QMS-SOP-730-1, Design and Development Control, and 2) QMS-PLN-003, Trexo Home/Plus Verification and Validation Plan, will be revised to implement design change activities with a proposed completion target date of November 30, 2023. The review of the cited procedure, QMS-SOP-730-1, Design and Development Control, does not address all of the requirements for 21 CFR 820.30. For example, this procedure does not clearly explain how your firm used change control during its design process or how approved design inputs are implemented as part of the change control process.

Additionally, the review of the QMS-PLN-003, Trexo Home/Plus Verification and Validation Plan, revealed that this procedure does not address all of the requirements for 21 CFR 820.30(g). For example, this procedure did not summarize how the clinical evaluations of the device ensure the device meets user needs and the intended uses, and this procedure did not clearly define how risk management issues were addressed throughout the design control process for these devices. In addition, it is unclear what design change activities are being conducted and how these design change activities will result in the revision of the QMS-PLN-003.

Your firm should provide evidence that the procedure has been updated to include all of the requirements of 21 CFR 820.30, and evidence of implementation of the validation activities that were conducted as part of the design control process for the Trexo devices.

2. Failure to adequately establish and maintain procedures where the results of a process cannot be fully verified by subsequent inspection and test, the process shall be validated with a high degree of assurance and approved according to established procedures, as required by 21 CFR 820.75(a).

For example: The procedure, QMS-SOP-756-1, Process Validation, Rev 1.0 (dated June 6, 2023) does not ensure that a process that cannot be fully verified has been adequately validated. For example, the PCBA and motor tests for the Trexo Home and Trexo Plus have not been validated.

Your firm indicated that CAR-53 is related to this observation. The proposed corrective actions include: 1) drafting QMS-DOC-756.001, Required Process Validations, to list all of the processes that require validation and 2) to implement the Installation Qualification (IQ), Operational Qualification (OQ), and Performance Qualification (PQ) activities that were specified in QMS-DOC-756.001. Your firm did not indicate if the procedure, QMS-SOP-756-1, Process Validation, would be updated to meet the requirements of 21 CFR 820.75(a). In addition, a copy of the QMS-DOC-756.001 document was not provided for review. Without this document, it is unknown what IQ, OQ and PQ activities are being performed on the Trexo devices. In addition, your firm did not specifically address the criteria that will be utilized in order to conduct the PCBA and motor validation tests

3. Failure to adequately establish and maintain procedures for implementing corrective and preventive action. The procedures shall include requirements for analyzing processes, work operations, concessions, quality audit reports, quality records, service records, complaints, returned product, and other sources of quality data to identify existing and potential causes of nonconforming product, or other quality problems. Appropriate statistical methodology shall be employed where necessary to detect recurring quality problems, as required by 21 CFR 820.100(a)(1).

For example: The procedure, QMS-S09-851-0, Corrective and Preventative Actions (CAPA), Rev. 2 (dated May 1, 2023; and the same procedure, Rev 1, dated April 14, 2023) does not ensure that all data sources are reviewed as possible CAPAs. For example, non-conformance reports (NCRs) are not included as a Quality Objective.

Your firm indicated that CAR-59 has been initiated in response to this observation. The proposed corrective actions are: 1) to update QMS-DOC-001, Quality Policy & Quality Objectives, to include measurable Key Performance Indicator (KPI) reporting metrics required for NCRs and CAPAs; 2) to revise CEMS-SOP-851-2, Corrective and Preventative Actions, to include all data sources. Your firm did not provide copies of the updated procedures, QMS-DOC-001, Quality Policy & Quality Objectives and QMS-S09-851-0, Corrective and Preventative Actions for review. Your firm’s response does not mention if the updated procedures will be utilized to conduct a retrospective review of past NCRs and CAPAs.

4. Failure to adequately establish and maintain procedures for receiving, reviewing, and evaluating complaints by a formally designated unit. Such procedures shall ensure that: 1) All complaints are processed in a uniform and timely manner; 2) Oral complaints are documented upon receipt; and 3) Complaints are evaluated to determine whether the complaint represents an event which is required to be reported to FDA under part 803 of this chapter, Medical Device Reporting (MDR), as required by 21 CFR 820.198(a).

For example: The procedures, QMS-SOP-821-2, Feedback and Complaint Handling, Rev 2 (dated May 17, 2023 (and the previous version, Rev 1 dated April 21, 2023)) and QMS-WRK-821-1, Feedback and Complaint Work Instructions, Rev 1 (dated June 2, 2023) do not ensure that complaints received by your firm are adequately handled. Specifically:

A. Your procedures do not ensure that all complaints are handled as complaints instead of feedback. Each of the four feedback records should have been designated as complaints but were instead handled as feedback. Feedback records do not require evaluation for MDRs.

B. Your procedures do not ensure complaints that do not require investigations are documented. Five out of seven complaints reviewed did not require investigations due to the investigations being previously investigated. This information was not documented in the five complaints.

The adequacy of your firm’s response cannot be determined at this time.

Your firm indicated that CAR-46 is related to this observation. The proposed corrective actions are: 1) to retrain the Customer Service Engineer (CSE) on the Feedback and Complaint Handling procedure, QMS-SOP-821-2; 2) to review past tickets to ensure that the tickets were handled correctly as complaints, to evaluate these tickets for compliance with the MDR procedure, and to investigate these tickets (if required); 3) to update the Feedback and Complaint Report, QMS-FRM-821, to reference an ISSUE ID (ISSUE ID group the complaints based on the causes of the complaints); and 4) to update the Feedback and Complaint Work Instruction, QMS-WRK-821, to describe the process of grouping a new complaint to an existing ISSUE ID in order to determine if an investigation is necessary. Without all of the aforementioned supporting evidence, the evidence needed to evaluate the adequacy of this response is incomplete.

Our office requests that your firm, Trexo Robotics Holdings Inc., cease any activities that result in the misbranding or adulteration of the Trexo devices, such as the commercial distribution of the devices for the uses discussed above.

Your firm should take prompt action to address any violations identified in this letter. Failure to promptly adequately address this matter may result in regulatory action being initiated by the FDA without further notice. These actions include, but are not limited to, seizure, injunction, and civil money penalties.

Other federal agencies may take your compliance with the FD&C Act and its implementing regulations into account when considering the award of federal contracts.

Please notify this office in writing within fifteen business days from the date you receive this letter of the specific steps your firm has taken to address the noted violations, as well as an explanation of how your firm plans to prevent these violations, or similar violations, from occurring again. Include documentation of the corrections and/or corrective actions (which must address systemic problems) your firm has taken. If your firm’s planned corrections and/or corrective actions will occur over time, please include a timetable for implementation of those activities. If corrections and/or corrective actions cannot be completed within fifteen business days, state the reason for the delay and the time within which these activities will be completed. Your firm’s response should be comprehensive and address any violations included in this Warning Letter. If you believe that your products are not in violation of the FD&C Act, include your reasoning and any supporting information for our consideration as part of your response.

Your firm’s response should be sent by email to: [email protected] or by mail to:

Hunter Biden’s ex-wife and former girlfriend testify at trial about finding his drug paraphernalia

Hunter Biden, accompanied by his wife, Melissa Cohen Biden, departs from federal court,...

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) — Hunter Biden’s ex-wife and a former girlfriend testified Wednesday in his  gun trial  about finding his crack pipes and other drug paraphernalia, and jurors saw photos of the president’s son bare-chested in a bubble bath and heard about his visit to a strip club.

As the first lady sat in the front row, the courtroom grew quiet when Kathleen Buhle, who was married to Hunter for 20 years, walked in. She testified that she discovered her husband was using drugs when she found a crack pipe in an ashtray on their porch on July 3, 2015, a day after their anniversary. When she confronted him, “he acknowledged smoking crack,” she said.

The trial, about whether he lied on a gun purchase form in 2018 when he said he wasn’t using drugs, has quickly become a highly personal and detailed tour of the mistakes and drug use of Hunter Biden, whose struggles have been tabloid fodder for years and were used publicly by Republicans, including in their stalled impeachment effort against the president.

The proceedings are unfolding as  the 2024 election  looms, and  allies worry about the toll it will take on President Joe Biden , who is deeply concerned about the health and sustained sobriety of his only living son. Prosecutors argue the photos, testimony and other evidence are necessary to show Hunter Biden’s state of mind when he bought the gun.

Hunter Biden has been  charged with three felonies  stemming from the purchase in October 2018. He’s accused of lying to a federally licensed gun dealer, making a false claim on the application by saying he was not a drug user and illegally having the gun for 11 days.

Jurors have seen the gun and the form at the center of the case, and they have heard from the former clerk who sold the weapon. The clerk, Gordon Cleveland, said he watched as Hunter Biden entered his name, address and other personal information on the form.

He said he was standing next to Hunter Biden when he began to answer a series of questions on the form with “yes or no” boxes to check. Hunter checked a box saying he was purchasing the gun for himself. Another question asked whether the buyer was “an unlawful user of or addicted to” marijuana, stimulants, narcotics or any other controlled substance.

“He wrote ‘no’,” Cleveland said. He also testified that Hunter did not ask any questions or express any confusion about the question. He paid $900 in cash, telling Cleveland to keep the change — about $13.

Prosecutors have hammered the idea that Hunter Biden was a habitual user, unable to stay clean for long. Buhle testified that even before she found the drugs, she suspected he was using. He had been kicked out of the Navy after testing positive for cocaine.

“I was definitely worried, scared,” she said. They have three children and divorced in 2016 after his infidelity and drug abuse became too much, according to her memoir, “If We Break,” about the dissolution of their marriage.

Buhle, who was subpoenaed, was on the stand for a brief 20 minutes. She remained composed but seemed upset as she recounted how she searched his car about a dozen times for drugs, whenever the children were driving it.

“Did you ever see Hunter using drugs?” defense attorney Abbe Lowell asked Buhle.

“No,” she replied.

Then prosecutor Leo Wise asked Buhle how she knew Hunter was using drugs.

“He told me,” she said.

Prosecutors also called Zoe Kestan, who testified under immunity about meeting Hunter Biden in December 2017 at a strip club in New York where she worked. During a private session, he pulled out a pipe and began smoking what she assumed was crack.

“He was incredibly charming and charismatic and friendly, and I felt really safe around him,” she said. “I remember after he had smoked it, nothing had changed. He was the same charming person.”

Kestan detailed for jurors when she saw him use drugs, buy drugs, talk about drugs or possess drug paraphernalia. Prosecutors asked her where he stored his drugs and pipes, and she testified he kept them in pouches and other places, such as a sunglasses cases.

On cross-examination, Kestan acknowledged that she had no contact with him in October 2018, the period when he bought the gun.

Jurors were shown dozens of pages of Hunter Biden’s  memoir, “Beautiful Things,”  written in 2021 after he got sober. And they heard lengthy audio excerpts from the book, which traces his descent into addiction following  the death of his brother , Beau Biden, in 2015 from cancer. The memoir covers the period he bought the gun, though it doesn’t mention the weapon specifically.

Lowell has said Hunter Biden’s state of mind was different when he wrote the book than when he purchased the gun, when he didn’t believe he had an addiction. And he’s suggested Hunter Biden might have felt he had a drinking problem at the time, not a drug problem. Alcohol abuse doesn’t preclude a gun purchase.

The Delaware trial comes after the collapse of  a plea deal with prosecutors  that would have resolved the gun case and a separate California tax case. He’s now facing a separate trial in September on  charges of failing to pay $1.4 million in taxes .

Hunter Biden has since pleaded not guilty and has said he’s being unfairly targeted by the Justice Department, after Republicans slammed the now-defunct plea agreement as a sweetheart deal for the Democratic president’s son.

In Congress, Republicans have for months pursued an impeachment inquiry seeking to tie President Biden to his son’s business dealings. So far, GOP lawmakers have failed to uncover evidence directly implicating President Biden in any wrongdoing. But on Wednesday, House Republicans accused Hunter and the president’s brother James Biden  of making false statements  to Congress as part of the inquiry.

At his criminal trial, Hunter Biden’s personal messages have been shown as evidence, including some that came from a laptop he left at a Delaware repair shop and never retrieved. In 2020,  the contents  made their way to Republicans and were publicly leaked, revealing some highly personal messages about his work and his life — some that appeared in congressional hearings. He has since sued over the leaked information.

Jurors are also expected to hear from James Biden, who is close with Hunter and helped his nephew through rehab stints in the past. They will also get details on how Beau Biden’s widow, Hallie Biden, became addicted to crack during a brief relationship with Hunter after her husband’s death.

Hallie took the gun from Hunter and tossed it into the garbage at a nearby market, afraid of what he might do with it. The weapon was later found by someone collecting cans and eventually turned over to police.

First lady Jill Biden went to court for the third consecutive day to support Hunter, ahead of  her trip to France to meet President Joe Biden , who was in Europe to mark the anniversary of D-Day.

If convicted, Hunter Biden faces up to 25 years in prison, though first-time offenders do not get anywhere near the maximum, and it’s unclear whether the judge would give him time behind bars.

The trial is unfolding shortly after Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, was  convicted of 34 felonies  in New York City. The two criminal cases are unrelated, but their proximity underscores how the courts have taken center stage during the 2024 campaign.

More than a million borrowers who were defrauded by for-profit schools have had billions of dollars in federal student loans eliminated through a government aid program. But people with private loans have generally been excluded from any relief — until recently.

Navient, a large owner of private student loan debt, has created, but not publicized, a program that allows borrowers to apply to have their loans forgiven. Some who succeeded have jubilantly shared their stories in chat groups and other forums.

“I cried, a lot,” said Danielle Maynard, who recently received notice from Navient that nearly $40,000 in private loans she owed for her studies at the New England Institute of Art in Brookline, Mass., would be wiped out.

Navient, based in Wilmington, Del., has not publicized the discharge program that helped Ms. Maynard. Other borrowers have complained on social media about difficulties getting an application form. When asked about the program and the criticisms, a company spokesman said, “Borrowers may contact us at any time, and our advocates can assist.”

So a nonprofit group of lawyers has stepped in to ease the process: On Thursday, the Project on Predatory Student Lending , an advocacy group in Boston, published Navient’s application form and an instruction guide for borrowers with private loans who are seeking relief on the grounds that their school lied to them.

“We want to level the playing field and let people know, instead of having it be this closely held secret,” said Eileen Connor, the group’s director.

Senator Elizabeth Warren, Democrat of Massachusetts, and eight Senate colleagues sent Navient a letter last month with a lengthy list of questions about the program. Navient responded, but did not directly address many of the senators’ questions.

Navient’s new program — which it calls a “school misconduct discharge” — is something of a private parallel to a federal program known as “ borrower defense to repayment ,” which allows those who were seriously misled by their schools to have their federal student loans eliminated. Under President Biden, the Education Department revived the relief program and used it to cancel nearly $30 billion in debt owed by 1.6 million borrowers.

The Project on Student Predatory Lending backed a class-action lawsuit against the government that led to a 2022 settlement under which nearly 200,000 borrowers had their federal student debts eliminated. Ms. Maynard, who is 34, shed $38,000 in federal loans through that deal.

But she, like many borrowers, remained mired in private student loans. Ms. Maynard paid $700 a month to Navient for more than a decade for her private loans.

For nearly a decade, in the early 2000s, Navient — then known as Sallie Mae — struck deals with for-profit schools to issue private loans to their students. Lawsuits from state attorneys general later accused Navient of making those loans knowing that most would never be repaid . Many schools indemnified Navient for the private loans, agreeing to defray the company’s loss if the loans defaulted.

In 2022, Navient settled with 40 state attorneys general and canceled $1.7 billion in debt on those private loans — but only for borrowers who had already defaulted. Because those debts were unlikely to ever be repaid, the deal cost Navient only $50 million, the company said in regulatory filings. Borrowers who had kept paying their bills, like Ms. Maynard, remained stuck.

But a pressure campaign from lawmakers, federal regulators and lawyers representing borrowers prompted the company to create the “school misconduct discharge.”

Navient began sending a 12-page application form this year to some borrowers who complained about their private loans. The document lists dozens of types of impropriety by schools — such as inflating job placement rates and graduates’ earnings, or misrepresenting their educational programs — and asks borrowers to choose which apply to their experience. Applicants are required to submit documentation for their claims.

After Ms. Maynard’s federal loans were eliminated last year, she stopped making payments on her private loans and called Navient, seeking relief options.

A few months ago, Navient sent her its misconduct discharge form. Weeks later, she received the notice that her application had been approved.

The senators’ letter to Navient called its private loan discharge process “burdensome and confusing.” It also asserted a legal basis for borrowers’ claims that their loans should be canceled: the so-called holder-in-due-course rule, a 1975 regulation by the Federal Trade Commission that lets those who use certain types of loans contest the debt if the goods they bought were fraudulent.

The response that Navient sent the senators acknowledged the rule as a ground for claims. “We are committed to canceling all loans that meet the Holder Rule criteria,” Navient’s chief executive, David Yowan, wrote in the letter, which was reviewed by The New York Times.

The letter said Navient had discharged “some” loans for borrowers who raised claims under the rule, and had “recently introduced an enhanced process for borrowers to seek discharge,” which it described as “still in its early stages.”

Mr. Yowan told investors on a conference call in January that Navient had put $35 million in reserve for losses on school-misconduct claims. He cited “new regulatory expectations” as the reason. Navient has not disclosed how much of its $16.6 billion private student loan portfolio consists of loans that could be eligible for the debt cancellation program.

Senator Warren said in a written statement this week, “Navient has admitted responsibility for canceling their predatory loans but set up a process for cancellation that’s impossibly confusing for borrowers.”

Some trying to navigate the process have already failed.

Thomas Jean-Mastej had his federal loans for studies at American InterContinental University — a school cited by the Federal Trade Commission for deceptive recruiting tactics — canceled through the borrower defense program. In March, he filed a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau about his private loans.

Navient responded by sending him the school misconduct discharge application form, which he submitted in mid-April. On May 10, he received a denial notice. It said Navient “carefully considers a variety of factors in determining whether a private loan should be discharged” but did not specify why his claim was rejected.

Mr. Jean-Mastej said he had hoped Navient “would have some compassion” — especially since he has, over the years, already repaid the company nearly $17,000 for a loan of just less than $7,000. He still owes almost $4,000.

Scores of others are in limbo, awaiting a response. Thomas Carter learned about Navient’s program on a Reddit forum . Following the steps recommended there, he filed a consumer bureau complaint, then received an application form from Navient. He sent it in three weeks ago.

“My thoughts were, like, why is this such a secret?” said Mr. Carter, who attended the Art Institute of York, in Pennsylvania. “You had to go through all these hoops to get the application.”
