Ryan Steck's The Real Book Spy

Full coverage of all your favorite thriller authors, and their characters, unlike anywhere else on the web , michael connelly’s next harry bosch & mickey haller novel announced.

On November 7th, 2023, Harry Bosch and Mickey Haller are back in Resurrection Walk , the highly-anticipated new novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author Michael Connelly.

Bosh, one of the genre’s most recognized characters, first debuted in Connelly’s 1992 novel The Black Echo . Since then, the LAPD detective turned Private Investigator has gone on to star in 24 novels to date. Lately, though, as Bosch has gotten older, Connelly has had his beloved protagonist co-star along other characters, the most recent being Renée Ballard.

Ballard, like Bosch, is an LAPD detective driven by the pursuit of truth and justice, who shares the “everyone counts or nobody counts” mindset that Harry lives by. First introduced in The Late Show (2017), Ballard has become another hit character for Connelly to work with, and she’s partnered with Harry several times in recent books. However, this time around, it appears that Bosch will share screen time with his half-brother, famous defense attorney—and the Lincoln Lawyer himself—Mickey Haller.

Haller, who starred in the bestselling 2005 novel The Lincoln Lawyer , has anchored six titles to date, including The Law of Innocent (2020), while making numerous appearances in other Bosch-starring books. The character was first portrayed on the big screen by Oscar-award-winning actor Matthew McConaughey back in 2011. Last year, Netflix launched a new series starring Heller on their platform (similar to the Titus Wellivur-starring Bosch drama on Amazon), starring Manuel García-Rulfo Lapuente as Haller. Like the book and movie before it, the show is also called The Lincoln Lawyer . Season 2 is expected to drop on Netflix later this year.

It’s always a treat when Bosch and Haller team up, and judging by what we know, Connelly’s fans are in for a real treat this time around.

The path to justice for both the lawyer and his investigator is fraught with danger from those who don’t want the case reopened. And they will stop at nothing to keep the Haller-Bosch dream team from uncovering what the deputy’s killing was really about.

His books, which include the Harry Bosch series, the Lincoln Lawyer series, and the Renée Ballard series, have sold more than eighty million copies worldwide. Connelly is a former newspaper reporter who has won numerous awards for his journalism and his novels. Books | book review: bosch and haller find common purpose in michael connelly’s ‘resurrection walk’.

Michael Connelly

The title “Resurrection Walk” takes on myriad meanings as Michael Connelly pairs his two most popular, and iconic, characters — “Lincoln Lawyer” Mickey Haller and L.A.P.D. detective Harry Bosch — in his tightly coiled 38th novel.

For prisoners who have just been exonerated of their crimes, declared innocent and set free, this walk is their resurrection back to their lives. For Haller, it’s the feeling of having used his expertise to “resurrect” a wrongly convicted person “from the dead,” bringing the lawyer a “fulfillment” he had never known in “the practice of law or in life.” And for Bosch, now retired with health problems, facing his mortality, a resurrection walk is a way to restore his mission of seeking justice. Work is Bosch’s own prescription for feeling better.

Connelly has combined Haller and Bosch in other thrillers, playing off their different backgrounds and approaches to the law, but for these half-brothers the dynamic is different in “Resurrection Walk.” The relationship has changed. This time Bosch is working for Haller, but, of course, the former detective is no ordinary employee; he’s at the center as the attorney refocuses his law practice. While Haller narrates most of “Resurrection Walk,” Bosch is vital to the plot.

On a career high, having helped free a man wrongly convicted of murder, Haller begins his own “in-house innocence project” to investigate possible unjust convictions. The work will be completely pro bono — a major step for Haller, who enjoys a big salary. Haller’s recent success at getting an exoneration has brought an avalanche of mail from prisoners proclaiming their innocence. Bosch reads each letter first, deciding if the prisoners’ claims are legitimate or not.

Bosch also has become Haller’s driver, going from courthouses to clients in the vehicle that doubles as Haller’s office, which earned Haller the moniker Lincoln Lawyer. Driving and waiting gives Bosch time to vet potential pro bono clients.

He is foremost an investigator. But Bosch refuses to call himself a “defense investigator,” preferring his own term “truth work.” Bosch also is not Haller’s chauffeur, insisting the lawyer sit beside him in the front seat and refusing to put the Lincoln in drive until Haller does. In addition to using his detective skills, Bosch also took the job because he gets access to private health insurance. Haller arranged for him to participate in an UCLA experimental nuclear medicine trial for his form of cancer.

Bosch suggests they look into the case of Lucinda Sanz, five years into her conviction for shooting her ex-husband Roberto, an L.A. County sheriff’s deputy, following an argument at her home. She claims innocence, saying she pled no contest to manslaughter to avoid a life sentence. The records on her case are thin. Bosch finds witnesses claiming they were coerced, as well as a conspiracy within the deputy squad, while Haller files a federal claim that his client is unlawfully imprisoned.

new book by michael connelly

Connelly’s superb plot maintains high suspense until the final page, a hallmark of this author’s reputation. The team of Bosch and Haller is not always smooth — Bosch usually has ongoing acrimonious relationships with his employers. While each is aware of the other’s strong skills, they have to learn to trust each other’s instincts and relinquish a bit of control with every twist of the investigation.

Haller’s tendency to sometimes skirt the boundaries of the law often butts up against Bosch’s more traditional style. The intense courtroom scenes move fast and furiously as Haller relies on state-of-the-art forensic advances as well as several sleight-of-hand moves. “Resurrection Walk” also shows a renewal of the half-brothers’ connection as Connelly brings a rich patina to the individual personalities of Haller and Bosch.

“Resurrection Walk” isn’t Connelly’s only current project. The TV series “Bosch: Legacy S2” is now streaming on the Freevee channel. The second season of the Netflix series “The Lincoln Lawyer” came out this past summer; a third season is planned.

Connelly is among 24 authors who have raised more than $3 million to help PEN America open an office in Miami and expand its efforts to counter the surge in book bans. The other authors include Judy Blume, James Patterson, Amanda Gorman, Nora Roberts and David Baldacci. Two TV series based on Connelly characters also are in development — one drama would focus on Bosch’s former partner, Detective Jerry Edgar, working undercover for the FBI in Little Haiti, Miami; the other is centered on Detective Renée Ballard, who is leading the LAPD’s new cold case division.

A virtual discussion with Michael Connelly

Michael Connelly will discuss “Resurrection Walk” during a national online discussion with S.A. Cosby as part of Barnes & Noble Midday Mystery Virtual Event series beginning at 3 p.m. Nov. 8. The live discussion is free; the discussion including a signed copy and shipping of “Resurrection Walk” begin at $38. Michael Connelly talks about 2 new Bosch spinoff series, 1 new book

  • Colette Bancroft Times staff

Good news abounds for Michael Connelly’s fans, especially those around Tampa Bay.

One bit of news that emerged earlier this month surprised the bestselling author himself. “It was one of those things — it got leaked somehow,” Connelly said via Zoom from his Los Angeles home.

He was talking about two new, as yet untitled Amazon TV projects in development, one a spinoff from the hit series “Bosch,” based on his novels about Harry Bosch, an LAPD detective, and the other based on his books about another detective, Renée Ballard, with whom Harry sometimes teams up.

A tweet from Deadline on Feb. 7 broke the news of the spinoff. Connelly said, “That forced Amazon to put out a statement earlier than they usually do. Usually they do it when we’re further along and it’s more of a sure thing.”

The spinoff would be the second after “Bosch: Legacy,” which stars Titus Welliver as the title character. The new series would focus on Bosch’s partner in the original Amazon series, Jerry Edgar, who was played by Jamie Hector. It would move the character from L.A. to Miami’s Little Haiti for an undercover FBI mission.

Connelly says he knows Hector is “excited” about the show, but, he says, “I don’t know if technically he’s signed on. There’s no show without him, but I don’t know what deals are done.”

Hector, he says, “is of Haitian descent, so the story is really perfect for him. It’s centered in Little Haiti, but it would spread to a lot of South Florida.”

Connelly, who has a home in Tampa, says, “The most exciting thing to me is the possibility of making a show in Florida.”

The other show in development would center on Ballard, who has appeared in five of Connelly’s books but has not yet been a character on the Bosch TV shows.

He says that he thinks his 2022 novel, “Desert Star,” which teamed Ballard and Bosch, might have been the impetus for a series based on her. “‘Desert Star’ has this version of Ballard where she’s off the night beat, putting together this group of I don’t want to say misfits, but this kind of ragtag group of volunteers” to work cold cases.

In the earlier Ballard books, she worked the midnight shift, he says. “If you translate that visually, you’d have a very dark show. There’s a lot more blue sky in ‘Desert Star,’ and I think that’s what finally got something going on Ballard, this new look at her.”

As for who might play Ballard, Connelly says, “There has not even been a discussion of casting yet. We’ve got to get a script first.”

He hopes that in the new shows, as in his novels, characters from them and from “Bosch: Legacy” will interact. “All these shows would cross over, and that’s an exciting thing. The possibility of having these kind of characters cross into each other’s shows is kind of the overall plan.” (The exception is “The Lincoln Lawyer,” because it’s a Netflix series.)

For the first three TV series based on his books — “Bosch,” “Bosch: Legacy” and “The Lincoln Lawyer” — Connelly has been very involved with almost every aspect. Although he’s an executive producer of the new ones, he says he’ll have a little more distance.

“I’m 66, so even though there’s news about these shows, I’m not as hands-on. I was involved with picking the showrunners, and I think we have some good ones.”

“Bosch” completed its seven-season run on Amazon Prime, but Connelly is still hands-on with “Bosch: Legacy” on Amazon Freevee and “The Lincoln Lawyer.”

During the Feb. 10 interview, Connelly said the new season of “Bosch: Legacy” is “completely wrapped today. Production is done and locked.”

Shooting continues for “The Lincoln Lawyer,” he said.

Neither new season has a drop date yet, Connelly says, although “Bosch: Legacy” is likely to premiere in the fall.

One other TV project he was involved in, a series for ABC called “Avalon,” won’t be on the fall schedule. With David E. Kelley as showrunner, it was based on a short story Connelly wrote that wasn’t part of the Bosch universe.

“After we shot the pilot, ABC tested it and decided not to go forward with it,” he says. “It’s not 100% dead; we might take it somewhere else.”

He does have another project that will debut in the fall: his next book.

This will be the 39th novel from Connelly, who was recently named a Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America.

“Resurrection Walk” will feature Bosch’s half brother Mickey Haller, aka the Lincoln Lawyer.

“This book is like seeded in ‘Desert Star,’” Connelly says. “Mickey Haller is in that book for a phone call, and the new book plays off of that.”

He wants readers to know that Bosch will play a significant role, too. “I think a lot of people out there thought that (’Desert Star’) was the last Bosch book for some reason, and I wanted to reassure people I’m putting him in the next book.

“Hopefully he’s still around while I’m around.”

Fans can look for “Resurrection Walk” to be published on Nov. 7. And — spoiler alert! — Connelly’s readers in the Tampa Bay area can see him talk about it in person when he headlines the Tampa Bay Times Festival of Reading at the Palladium in St. Petersburg on Nov. 11.

5 New Books We Recommend This Week

Suggested reading from critics and editors at The New York Times.

  • Share full article

It’s Independence Day, when Americans traditionally gather to grill meat and blow things up while they celebrate the nation’s founding — but in our recommended books this week, we’re casting an eye on more recent history: Tom McGrath’s “Triumph of the Yuppies” looks back to the “greed is good” era of the 1980s and shows how it marched unimpeded to the present day, while John Ganz’s “When the Clock Broke” finds the roots of today’s culture wars and ascendant right wing in the seemingly quieter politics of the early 1990s. Also up: the biography of an influential book editor, a novel set on a small Welsh island in the 1930s, and a graphic novel that explores themes of independence and self-invention. Happy reading, and Happy Fourth. — Gregory Cowles

TRIUMPH OF THE YUPPIES: America, the Eighties, and the Creation of an Unequal Nation Tom McGrath

In this breezy history, McGrath sets out to explain why the United States suddenly fell in love with finance while inequality skyrocketed in the 1980s. He follows a series of colorful figures in their pursuit of crass materialism, including the junk bond king Michael Milken and the former yippie activist Jerry Rubin.

new book by michael connelly

“Graduating from an elite college and moving to the city to try to get rich has become so common that we barely notice it. The ultimate triumph of the yuppies is that we don’t even call them yuppies anymore.”

WHEN THE CLOCK BROKE: Con Men, Conspiracists, and How America Cracked Up in the Early 1990s John Ganz

The 1990s marked the end of the Cold War and the beginning of Clintonian “triangulation,” giving the impression of a bland consensus coalescing around a political middle. But as Ganz shows, the early part of the decade was also a time of social unrest and roiling resentments. His vibrant narrative account captures an emerging “politics of despair” that would eventually benefit the far right.

new book by michael connelly

“Captures the sweep of the early ’90s in all its weirdness and vainglory.... Ganz recounts all of this with a formidable command of the history. But he also has the skills of a gifted storyteller — one with excellent comedic timing, too — slipping in the most absurd and telling details.”

WHALE FALL Elizabeth O’Connor

Brief but complete, blunt but exquisite, Connor’s debut is set in the fall of 1938 on an unnamed Welsh island with a population of 47, including the bright and restless 18-year-old Manod, her mysterious younger sister and her lobster fisherman father. Unsettling disruptions to the landscape include a whale corpse washed up on the beach and English ethnographers who enlist Manod’s help but woefully distort island life in their work.

new book by michael connelly

“An example of precisely observed writing that makes a character’s specific existence glimmer with verisimilitude. … Understanding is hard work, O’Connor suggests, especially when we must release our preconceptions.”

THE EDITOR: How Publishing Legend Judith Jones Shaped Culture in America Sara B. Franklin

This essential if adulatory biography argues that Jones has been given short shrift, credited mostly as the culinary editor who championed Julia Child, but who did much more to burnish Knopf’s exalted reputation in the book business.

new book by michael connelly

“Jones’s contribution to the history of regular old literature has often been minimized or outright erased. … She burnished and sustained Knopf’s reputation as the most prestigious publishing house in the country while also earning it piles of money.”

VERA BUSHWACK Sig Burwash

In this graphic novel debut, Burwash transports the reader to Nova Scotia by exploring the lives of a nonbinary protagonist named Drew and their alter-ego, Vera Bushwack (a chainsaw-wielding, chaps-wearing nonbinary hero of sorts), as they work to clear land in order to build a cabin in the woods, exploring gender, independence and several other big themes along the way.

new book by michael connelly

“Burwash gives the book’s art a lovely personality. It is surprisingly plastic; sometimes their renderings of Drew and her environs are simple contours, sometimes the images are drawn from such a height that they’re almost maps.”
