How to Enchant Books and Equipment

Make an enchanting table setup.

Minecraft Craft Enchanting Table

The first step to enchanting your gear is to craft an enchanting table, which can be done once you have obtained enough diamonds and obsidian in your world. Place any enchantable item into the enchanting table to see the available enchantments.

Take note that Treasure Enchantments like Mending, Frost Walker, Soul Speed, Curse of Binding, and Curse of Vanishing cannot be obtained from an enchanting table and must be obtained through other methods.

Enchant Equipment or Books with XP

Minecraft Enchanting

You can either enchant your equipment directly or enchant a book and place the enchantment on your equipment with an anvil. However, you can only enchant an item once with the enchanting table .

You need both XP and Lapis Lazuli to enchant. To the left of the selected enchantment, you'll see the number of levels and Lapis Lazuli the enchant will consume. To the right, you'll see the minumum level you need to be to enchant it.

Place bookshelves around the enchating table

The level of enchantments you get in the enchanting table depend on the number of bookshelves surrouding it. To get the highest possible levels of enchantments, place at least 15 bookshelves in the area around the table.

Minecraft Bookshelf Placement Enchanting

The placement of the bookshelves is also important. The blue stained glass blocks shown in the image are all valid places you can place a bookshelf.

Minecraft Blocking Bookshelves

Placing any block in between the enchanting table and the bookshelf will also render it invalid , even torches, so make sure this area stays clear of any blocks.

Enchantments in the table are random

Minecraft Random Enchantments

When you place an item into the enchanting table, you receive a random set of enchantments for that specific item type. To reshuffle your random assortments of enchantments, you first need to use the enchanting table on any enchantable item. Restarting your game or letting time pass will not reshuffle your enchantments.

There are times when you may get some unintended additional enchantments when using an enchanting table. This may be beneficial if they are enchantments you need, but they may also detrimental if you get enchantments you don't want.

Use an Enchanted Book and Anvil

Minecraft Enchant with Anvil

Instead of using an enchanting table to enchant your items, you can also use an Enchanted Book and Anvil . Place the equipment item into the first slot of the Anvil and the book in the second slot. The advantages of this method is that you can enchant your gear several times by repeating the same process.

Using Enchanted Books will also consume XP. You can see the number of levels consumed after enchanting in the lower-right corner of the anvil HUD. The more enchantments you place on an item, the higher the enchantment cost.

The enchantment must be compatible with the equipment

You need to make sure that the enchantment in the book is compatible with the equipment you are trying to enchant or else the item will not be enchanted. If the book has multiple enchantments, only compatible enchantments will be placed on the item.

Combining Enchantments

Minecraft Combining Enchantments

When you use an anvil to combine two pieces of the same equipment type or two enchanted books into one, they combine enchantments. If the enchantments differ, the final product will have the enchantments of both items.

However, if two enchantments are mutually exclusive, like Fortune and Silk Touch they cannot be added to the same item at once. In this case, only the mutually exclusive enchantment from the first item will carry over.

Combine Enchantments to Increase their Level

If you combine items with the same type of enchantment, they will upgrade to the next level. However, this will only work if the enchantments are not already at max level and have the same level originally.

Avoid placing too many enchantments

Minecraft Enchantment Too Expensive

Enchanting a piece of gear with too many enchantments will make the upgrade too expensive to perform. The easiest work around is to place all your needed enchantments into a single book first before enchanting your equipment item.

Use a Grindstone to Remove Enchantments

Minecraft Grindstone Remove Enchantments

When you get unintended enchantments from an enchanting table or when you enchant an item to reshuffle your enchantment list, you can use a Grindstone to remove any enchantments from your equipment. However, keep in mind that this removes all enchantments on the item .

Trade with Villagers

Minecraft Villager Trade Enchantments

Librarian Villagers will often trade enchanted books for Emeralds and regular books with the player, while Armorers, Toolsmiths, and Weaponsmiths will carry enchanted items as part of their stock.

  • List of Villager Trades and Jobs

Loot Treasure Chests

Minecraft Treasure Chest Enchantments

Treasure Chests found in structures and dungeons around the world may contain different enchanted items and books. Some of these chests may be hidden or guarded by powerful mobs and traps.

Obtain from Fishing in Open Water

Minecraft Fishing Enchantments

Different enchantments can also be obtained by fishing. However, getting enchantments through fishing is rare and requires a large body of water to work. Fishing in a small or covered water source will not result in enchantments.

Get Soul Speed from Piglin Bartering or Bastion Remnants

Minecraft Soul Speed Enchantment

The Soul Speed Enchantment is the only Treasure Enchantment that you cannot obtain from villagers or regular treasure chests. You can only get them by either bartering with Piglins or looting chests in Bastion Remnants .

Enchanted books are a surefire way to rocket up your strength in Minecraft as you embark on challenging quests and explore the depths of the realm. To create an enchanted book, you'll need lapis lazuli, a book, and the anvil. You'll also need the requisite experience. We'll teach you how to quickly increase your level, easily acquire the necessary items, and use your enchanted book for maximum power. You're soon to be unstoppable.

Creating an Enchanted Book

Step 1 Gather the necessary resources.

  • Crafting table - Four wooden planks, which come from one wood log.
  • Book - Three pieces of paper, which come from three pieces of sugar cane, and one piece of leather, which comes from a cow or horse - you kill it.

Zac Churchill

  • In Minecraft PE, you'll tap the ... icon to open your inventory.

Step 3 Craft a crafting table.

  • On the PC version of Minecraft, you'll click and drag each of your four wooden blocks into the two-by-two crafting grid at the top of your inventory.
  • On Minecraft PE, you'll tap the tab above your inventory tab on the left side of the screen and then tap the crafting table icon, which resembles a box with lines on it.
  • On console, you'll press the "Crafting" button ( X or circle), then select a wooden crate.

Step 4 Place your crafting table on the ground.

  • If your hotbar is full, you must first open your inventory and replace an item in the hotbar with your crafting table.

Step 5 Open your crafting table.

  • In Minecraft PE, just tap the book icon on the left side of the screen, then click the 1 x [book] button on the right side.
  • On the console version of Minecraft, select the book icon from the paper section of the "Decorations" tab.

Step 7 Craft an enchanting table.

  • On consoles, select the enchanting table from the crafting table area of the "Structures" tab.

Step 8 Place the enchanting table on the ground.

  • For Minecraft PE, you'll tap the book on the left side of the screen to place it in the table.
  • For consoles, select the book in your inventory.

Step 11 Select an enchantment.

  • For example, if you're level 3, you can select any enchantment with a 1, 2, or 3 next to it.
  • Enchantments are randomized, so you won't be able to select a specific enchantment.

Step 12 Select your book.

  • In Minecraft PE, you must double-tap your book to add it to your inventory.

Enchanting an Item

Step 1 Gather the necessary materials for an anvil.

  • Three iron blocks - Each iron block requires nine iron bars, for a total of twenty-seven iron bars needed.
  • Four iron bars - These bars bring the iron total to thirty-one.
  • You can create iron bars by adding iron ore, which is the grey stone with orange-brown spots, into a furnace that has coal in it.

Step 2 Open your crafting table.

  • On the PE version of Minecraft, you'll tap the black anvil icon on the left side of the screen.
  • On the console version of Minecraft, you'll select the anvil icon in the "Structures" tab.

Step 4 Place your anvil on the ground.

  • For example, you might add a sword.

Step 7 Add your enchantment book.

How to make a book in Minecraft

If you ever invaded Minecraft ’s strongholds, temples, and dungeons, you’ve undoubtedly uncovered dusty books stuffed in chests and bookshelves. They can be an entertaining read or a useful enchantment tool. We show you how to make a book in Minecraft so you can author your own in-game tomes.

What you need

Craft your paper, craft your leather, craft your book, make a bookshelf, enchant a book, make a book and quill, sign a book and quill.

You can create a book with a special message authored by you up to 50 pages. You can also create books containing enchantments that can be used on weapons and armor. If you simply want decorative bookcases in your hideaway, you’ll still need a few books as ingredients.

Sugar cane – Used to craft paper. You can find this ingredient growing next to a body of water, as shown above. You can also find paper stored in chests.

Leather – You can get this ingredient as a dropped item from a slain cow, donkey, horse, llama, mooshroom, or mule. However, for this guide, we craft leather using hide dropped by slain rabbits.

Crafting Table – The foundation of most crating in Minecraft . To make this table, place one wood plank block into each of the four squares next to your avatar in the inventory. When completed, drag the Crafting Table down into your Hotbar for world placement. Remember, one wood block creates four wood plank blocks.

Enchanting Table – To craft this tool, open your Crafting Table and use one book, two diamonds , and four obsidian blocks (cooled, hardened lava), then drag the resulting table into your Hotbar for world placement. After that, you can turn blank books into enchanted books that store enchantments like Piercing, Protection, Aqua Affinity, and more.

Let’s move on to crafting a book!

Step 1: Open your Crafting Table.

Step 2: Place one sugar cane each into the three blocks in the middle row.

Step 3: Drag the resulting three sheets of paper down into your inventory. You’ll need all three sheets for your book.

Again, you can bypass this section altogether if you already gathered leather from a slain cow, donkey, horse, llama, mooshroom, or mule.

Step 2: Place one rabbit hide each into the top and middle squares in the first column.

Step 3: Place one rabbit hide each into the top and middle squares in the second column.

Step 4: Drag the resulting leather down into your inventory.

Step 2: Place one sheet of paper each in the top and middle square in the left column on the crafting grid.

Step 3: Place one sheet of paper in the top square of the middle column.

Step 4: Place one leather in the center square of the middle column.

Step 5: Drag the resulting book down into your inventory.

This requires two main steps: Create wood planks and then craft the bookcase.

Part 1: Craft wood planks

You need to create six wood plank blocks from any type of wood to create a bookshelf .

Step 2: Place one wood block (log, normal, or stripped) into any square on the crafting grid.

Step 3: Drag the resulting four wood plank blocks down into your inventory.

Step 4: Repeat steps 2 and 3 for another four wood plank blocks.

Part 2: Create your bookshelf

Step 2: Place one wood plank block into each square in the top row on the crafting grid.

Step 3: Place one book into each square in the middle row.

Step 4: Place one wood plank block into each square in the bottom row.

Step 5: Drag the resulting bookshelf down into your inventory.

This method requires an Enchanting Table, one crafted book, and three lapis lazuli. You can obtain the latter ingredient by mining lazuli ore — blocks speckled with blue flakes — found between 11 and 27 blocks below the surface.

Step 1: Open your Enchanting Table.

Step 2: Place one book in the left square.

Step 3: Place three lapis lazuli in the right square.

You’ll see three enchanting options just to the right, each with a number displayed on the far right. This number is the experience level you need to unlock and select the enchantment. If you don’t have enough experience, venture forth to kill mobs for XP and then return to the table.

Step 4: Select an enchantment. You’ll need to move the cursor over the enchantment to decipher the language.

Step 5: Drag the resulting enchanted book — still in the left square — down into your inventory.

Step 6: Repeat steps 2, 3, and 4 until you create the enchanted book you want.

The list of enchanted books is long, so refer to the entire library listed on the Official Minecraft Wiki .

For this, you’ll need additional ingredients. First, grab an ink sac dropped by a fallen squid. You also need a feather dropped by fallen chickens and parrots. Tamed cats will deliver feathers too.

Step 2: Add one book to the left square in the top row on the crafting grid.

Step 3: Add one inc sac to the middle square in the top row.

Step 4: Add one feather to the right square in the top row.

Step 5: Drag the resulting book and quill down into your inventory.

Having a book full of blank pages just isn’t any fun. Why not sign it?

Step 1: Make sure the book and quill are located in your Hotbar. Select and open the book (right-click, left trigger, or long-press).

Step 2: Type your message on any page. Each book has 50 pages, so be sure to leave lots to read.

Step 3: To finish writing, click/select/tap the Sign button — it turns green when highlighted.

Step 4: Enter a title and byline for your signed book.

Step 5: To “publish” your signed book, click/select/tap the Sign and Close button — it turns green when highlighted.

The resulting signed book now resembles an enchanted book, though the only “enchantment” here is your enchanting messages within.

By expanding the Midgar section of Final Fantasy 7 into an entire game, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth finally takes us beyond the walls into the world beyond. This much larger swath of land to explore begs the question of just how big this game will be. Between all the open-world tasks, sidequests, and minigames awaiting in the Gold Saucer, could this game really be a 100-hour experience as was claimed? What if you just tried to focus on the main story to see what has or hasn't changed? We've played through the entirety of Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth and can give you a good idea of just how long it will take you to reach this chapter's conclusion.

Note: We will not be spoiling any story details, but will list how many chapters there are. How long is Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth?

The Top 16 Best Books About Minecraft

Image of Venisia Gonzalez

The highly popular and addictive game Minecraft is a sandbox indie game originally created by Swedish programmer Markus "Notch" Persson; later developed and published by Mojang. The game is available to play on Xbox 360, PS3, PC, mobile devices, and is coming soon to both Xbox One and PS4.

The creative and building aspects of Minecraft allow players to build constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D procedurally generated world. Other activities in the game include exploration, gathering resources, crafting, and combat. Battle against enemy creatures, collect eggs from chickens or ride a pig! There's so much to do. It's a game that's appealing to both kids and adults alike. Gameplay has four modes:

  • Survival Mode: requires players to acquire resources and maintain their health and hunger
  • Creative Mode: players have an unlimited supply of resources and experience, the ability to fly, and no health or hunger
  • Hardcore Mode: version of survival mode, differing only in difficulty; it is set to the most difficult setting and re spawning is disabled, forcing players to delete their worlds upon death
  • Spectator Mode: player doesn't collide with blocks, is able to view, but not interact with, almost everything. This game mode isn't available in released versions yet , only in snapshots.

Here you will find a list of all the best books on the market that I have found to be your best assets to assist you from crafting to design ideas, to tricks and seeds. Enjoy!

16 Excellent Minecraft Books for Kids

This post may contain affiliate links.

Believe it or not, games like Minecraft motivate kids to read, including my own. To learn to play the game, kids read Minecraft forums and Minecraft books. But here’s the exciting news– there are lots of good fiction and nonfiction chapter books and middle grade books about Minecraft that kids can read. (More reading= improved reading skills!)

Minecraft books for kids

In a  WIRED article , Clive Thompson explains, “ Minecraft is surrounded by a culture of literacy . The game comes with minimal instructions or tutorials, so new players immediately set about hunting for info on how it works. That means . . . poring over how-to texts at Minecraft  wikis and “walk-through” sites, written by gamers for gamers. Or digging into printed manuals like The Ultimate Player’s Guide to Minecraft or the official  Minecraft Redstone Handbook .”

Top Minecraft Books for Kids

  • Diary of a Minecraft Zombie Book 1: A Scare of a Dare  by Herobrine Books
  • Into the Game (Minecraft Woodsword Chronicles)  by Nick Eliopulos
  • Diary of an 8-Bit Warrior   by Cube Kid

Minecraft can even be used in schools. Read the pros and cons of Minecraft education.

After a recent trip to the bookstore for a few Minecraft books for my kids, I thought I’d share some of the top Minecraft books you could buy for your kids. (Maybe for Christmas or anytime gifts?) Because reading is reading, right?!

Some of these books are Minecraft guides (nonfiction), others are Minecraft novels (fiction), and a few are activity books.

Minecraft: The Crafter’s Kitchen for Young Chefs and Their Families I love any book that gets kids reading about their favorite things like this book does for Minecraft fans. And yes, cookbooks count as reading! It’s organized by landscape (plains, oceans, forests, deserts, swamps, etc.) and the foods are recipes that are made with foods grown in those places. Each section has an introduction about the Earth’s biomes and how you can help with sustainability. For example, in the Ocean biome, read how to make seafood cakes, shrimp kebobs, coconut curry, and Bruce, or dulce de l. Don’t miss the fun Ice Cube Tray Sushi Blocks in the Rivers section or Meatballs in the taiga section. I haven’t made any of the recipes yet because too many of them have allergens that we can’t eat but they all look delicious.

I’d also add the Official Minecraft series of novels–they are by all different authors. Titles are The Crash, The Mountain, The Island…. I think there are 6 or 9 in the series? The only “official” Minecraft novels. They are fantastic, quality, engaging books that my 10 year old loves! (And has racked up some series AR points in the process!)

thanks, Lea — I can’t wait to check those out, too! And isn’t it wonderful to find books that your kids love to read?

My son is autistic and his reading has improved immensely after reading the ‘Steve Surname Adventures’ series. I think all boys aged 8-12 would just LOVE them!

Agreed – my daughter (who is 10) also loves them! Thanks for sharing — so happy your son has found a series he loves!!

Every Mojang Minecraft Book, Ranked

B ookshop.org is currently running a promotion on their books site wide. Plus, every sale on Bookshop.org goes to support independent bookshops directly. Noting that small bookstores are disappearing worldwide, we wanted to make sure to offer links to their storefront whenever possible to prevent the monopolization of bookstores and to support those that bring niche and unique reading to our neighborhoods.

Since 2019 Mojang has published a number of official Minecraft books, giving fans a chance to explore new worlds through all kinds of characters, from adventurers to endermen! Most of the Minecraft books are standalone stories (though some continue on in their own series) making it easy to jump in just about anywhere in the library of titles.

Most of the books are written for a younger audience, so they’re great for kids’ summer reading goals while adult Minecraft fans will love the quick, cute, and affordable stories. Dig deeper into Minecraft than ever before with one or all of the official Minecraft books!

Minecraft: The Crash

There’s one thing that needs to be right in a Minecraft book and that’s Minecraft knowledge! Unfortunately, The Crash features a couple of scenes that are inaccurate portrayals of the Minecraft world in order to progress the story or land a certain line. These scenes effectively shake readers out of the story if they have more than a basic understanding of Minecraft.

The other major problem with this book is the premise. The story begins with a young girl causing a car crash by waving her phone in front of her friend’s face while he’s driving through an intersection. The book then goes on to integrate themes of growing up, not being so irresponsible, and dealing with loss, but really? First off, who would do that? It sounds like something the local news would make up and call a “scary teen trend”. Even if that impetus is ignored, readers are faced with the fact that this character caused a major accident through extreme carelessness and the only accountability is that they have a weird Minecraft coma dream? Between the Minecraft inaccuracy and the odd morals of the plot, this is just not a good read for Minecraft fans.

Minecraft: Woodsword Chronicles

Minecraft: Woodsword Chronicles is Mojang’s attempt at a Diary of a Wimpy Kid style book. It’s filled with illustrations and has wide margins with generous character spacing. However, it is one of the rare early reader chapter books by Mojang.

The plot is a simple “trapped in the game” scenario with a group of friends using their Minecraft knowledge to get back to the real world. It’s entertaining for young kids, but it’s tough to imagine an older audience enjoying this since the plot is simple, streamlined, and without any surprises. For fans who do end up loving this book, there are actually 6 in the entire series, which provides plenty of reading to do!

Minecraft: the lost journals.

Although the premise is a bit darker than many of the other Minecraft books, Minecraft: The Lost Journals is one of the lightest and quickest ones for readers to get through. After hearing the sad story about how the main characters have both experienced loss, the content is fairly lighthearted and has very little tension compared to the other novels.

That’s an important distinction because even though it’s not one of the best Minecraft books, it’s still a decent summer reading option for elementary students. The writing is still challenging enough for the targeted audience, even if the content isn’t. On the bright side, the entire story takes place in Minecraft and stars two villagers!

Minecraft: the haven trials.

This is another odd Minecraft book where the game is not as important as what’s happening outside of the game. The story follows a young girl dealing with a new school year right after her best friend moves away. While there’s a lot to like about the story telling, which has themes surrounding the idea of growing up and making new friends, a lot of the literal plot points feel forced and unrealistic.

One thing that makes Minecraft: The Haven Trials stand out is the fact that it's set in Nigeria. Not many books, for kids or adults, are centered on the everyday life of a Nigerian and it’s always great to see and hear from international perspectives. Overall, this is a decent middle grade book for kids to read. Young fans of Minecraft will enjoy it more than others, but older fans of Minecraft might prefer to skip it altogether.

Minecraft: stories from the overworld.

The family that plays together stays together, and for minecraft households Stories from the Overworld has something for everyone. Tragically short, this graphic novel collection includes stories ranging from a single page image to full vignettes. As a collection, each story has its own flair, its own style, its own perspective. This makes for a very interesting handful of stories, some that are meant to be comedic, and still others that just don’t quite land.

The stories range from middle grade level to more YA tones, so it really is a book that can get passed around between siblings or even parents. Minecraft fans without kids might not find the volume as worthwhile, though with it being so short and cheap, it could earn its keep just by completing the Minecraft book collection.

Minecraft: The Shipwreck

Most readers agree that Minecraft: Shipwreck is a good book. Unfortunately, it’s up for debate whether it’s a good Minecraft book. The story focuses on a young boy who’s just moved to a new town (again) as he teams up with two unlikely friends to solve a mystery in a community center. They do this by entering into a secret Minecraft server together, learning friendship along the way.

And this brings us to the core of the issues with this book: it’s just like a non-Minecraft middle grade book. This means that there’s a great story about adjusting to changes, dealing with loss, and making the best of what you have. However, it also means that there’s less Minecraft scenes in this than there are real life scenes. Overall, this is a great read for book lovers, but those looking for a Minecraft tale should probably choose another story.

Buy Minecraft: The Shipwreck on Bookshop.org or on Amazon today!

Minecraft: zombies.

Released just last summer, Minecraft: Zombies! is one of the newest books Mojang has released and it’s already set to get a sequel in 2023. The story follows a young girl who’s trying to cure her zombie-bitten baby brother. Many Minecraft players are familiar with curing zombie villagers , and so they know exactly what a quest that can be! It’s not just up to the villager though; she manages to convince an adventurer to help her save her brother.

Action-packed with plenty of comedy mixed in, Minecraft: Zombies! an easy to read, middle grade book about bravery and sticking by family. Most adults probably won’t enjoy this one as anything more than a quick Minecraft adventure, but the target audience of 5th and 6th graders will find a lot to love here.

Minecraft: The Dragon

This book has a very promising premise of an ender dragon being raised in a village. The main character, Zetta, is a potion-maker just trying to keep her village safe from mobs when she stumbles upon an ender dragon egg. Obviously, she has to try to keep this somewhat under wraps, but what is she going to do once the dragon is too big to hide? And is it just going to eat everyone instead of protecting them?

This story doesn’t really include a great, big adventure, choosing instead to focus on the cast of characters dealing with the baby dragon. While middle grade readers will enjoy this well enough, many older readers might find that the characters all manage to feel flat, which certainly affects the reading experience. Despite this, the main plot is so strong that it can carry fans of ender dragons right on through with plenty to love about it.

Minecraft: wither without you volume 1.

Wither Without You is one of Mojang’s official Minecraft comic series and a rare YA title. The story is about two siblings on a mission to save their mentor with the help of another teen with strange abilities. The art is highly detailed, but manages to have a cutesy element to it that cements it as a YA graphic novel.

Along with the quality art, this comic book is hilarious! The dialogue and visual humor are obviously based on real experience playing Minecraft and the characters have a fun dynamic. All that praise aside, the humor is a bit inappropriate for younger readers. While most of the Minecraft books are aimed at grades 4-6, Wither Without You is aimed closer to grades 7-9 and could definitely be enjoyed by adults as well.

But the kids can’t have everything, so teens and adults should take this chance to scoop up a wildly entertaining Minecraft comic!

Minecraft dungeons: the rise of the arch-illager.

As the title suggests, The Rise of the Arch-Illager focuses on Minecraft Dungeons , rather than the main game. Following the life of Archie, an illager who’s been bullied and exiled by his tribe, as he rises to power and becomes the main villain of Minecraft Dungeons: the arch-illager!

A classic hero to villain story, author Matt Forbeck does a fantastic job making Archie sympathetic, despite his evil disposition. Within the first few pages it’s easy to fall on Archie’s side as he’s mistreated by the other illagers. The game glosses over the arch-illager’s backstory, so this book is perfect for anyone looking for all the details behind this powerfully dangerous villain.

Minecraft: the end.

For Minecraft fans who also love spooky vibes, Minecraft: The End is the perfect book. The story is told from the perspective of twin 12 year old endermen as their simple lives are interrupted by the arrival of some adventurers. From there, a war between endermen and humans begins and the twins aren’t sure which side they should be on.

A seriously intriguing premise, the story is held up with hauntingly beautiful writing that manages to carry creepy, dark tones throughout the entire book while making readers empathize with the endermen main characters. Ideal for young adult readers, this book is a satisfying read for anyone who plays Minecraft, especially if they love exploring the End.

Minecraft: The Voyage

Highly rated by many middle grade readers, this book has some of the best character development out of all of the Minecraft books. The story follows Stax Stonecutter as he is forced to stop being a hermit and go on an adventure despite just wanting to stay at home with his cats .

As this is another novel that follows a Minecraft character rather than a person from the real world, the descriptions offered are specific and more accurate than some of the other Minecraft books. The blending of Minecraft terminology and knowhow and some distinct character growth really just makes the story come to life for readers.

Although it’s written at a middle grade level, at 300 pages long any Minecraft fan can find something to enjoy throughout the story, whether it’s the characters, the dialogue, or the action!

Minecraft: castle redstone.

The newest official Minecraft novel, Castle Redstone offers readers a classic lost treasure adventure. Perfect for Minecraft players who also love Indiana Jones or Jules Verne, this story follows an adventuring party with a map to an unexplored castle in the nether that promises to reveal secrets from a long forgotten civilization. While the three adventurers aren’t exactly the most skilled people to be wandering in Minecraft, they have distinct personalities that mesh together well, creating chemistry that ends in humor and drama.

So far, Minecraft hasn’t dedicated many pages to exploring the nether, so this story is a long time coming! The journey will take the trio through multiple biomes filled with danger, supported by superb action writing. Action and adventure fans of all ages will love this newest installment in the Minecraft book universe.

Buy Minecraft: Castle Redstone on Bookshop.org or on Amazon today!

Minecraft: the island.

The first official Minecraft novel is still considered one of the best, which makes total sense since the author is Max Brooks, who also wrote World War Z ! Absolutely thrilling and packed with action, Minecraft: The Island is a great book even for readers who aren’t super familiar with Minecraft. For audible subscribers, an audio version of the book is available too, with Jack Black as the narrator!

Aimed at young adults, the story is a bit darker than other Minecraft books, focusing on survival in a strange land. The book starts with the main character having been transported from our world into the world of Minecraft, with no memory of their previous life. While the book is a standalone novel, there is a sequel out called The Mountain that continues the explorer’s journey and adds a new character. Minecraft’s first book may be the best place for readers to start, with its epic plot and approachable explanations of the world of Minecraft.

Minecraft volume 1.

This book is one of Minecraft’s official graphic novels and one of the best Minecraft titles overall. The story really captures what it’s like to play online with friends near and far, as it follows a kid named Tyler while he deals with moving away from everything he knows. The representation with this graphic novel is awesome too, with a varied cast of characters who can really be themselves with their friends.

This book is delightfully cute, featuring an art style similar to other middle grade and young adult graphic novels paired with a story about the power of a strong friend group. It’s another quick read with sequel volumes which have been collected in a boxed set that includes a free poster too!

Minecraft: mob squad.

Following a group of friends living in a Minecraft village, this story is currently one of the best Minecraft books so far. Four villager friends set out on an adventure to protect their town from mobs threatening their safety, putting them in more danger than ever before! By working together and growing their skills, they’ll do everything they can to earn their name: Mob Squad!

The characters each have their unique charms, creating comedy with their mix of personalities and the dialogue writing is refreshingly realistic. Written at a middle grade level, the plot is a fun adventure that can challenge kids and even entertain adult readers. Plus, there are two more books in this series, Never Say Nether and Don’t Fear The Creeper ! Readers looking for action and adventure in the world of Minecraft don’t have to look further than Mob Squad .

Discover the best Minecraft books for kids and beginners

There are a lot of Minecraft books out there, but the best ones are officially licensed and available via the official Minecraft website . Amazon often has great deals on Minecraft books as well. Here are a few great reads your students might enjoy.

1. Minecraft for Beginners Book

For first time players, the vastness of Minecraft’s world and its lack of hand holding can make the first hours spent in the game a little confusing. There’s so much to do, and this book helps you to get going. Written in easy-to-understand language, it provides an in-depth look at getting started in Minecraft. It covers the Minecraft basics, such as how to control your character and how to explore the map. After that, it helps guide you through your first day, how to eat, mine, equip tools, and build a shelter. After helping you to survive your first night (a rite of passage for all Minecrafters), it will help you move through day two and beyond.

Pros: Great for beginners

Cons: Not for experienced players and those who want to figure things out alone

Review: " My mother in law is in her 70’s and wanted to learn how to play Minecraft. After trying to teach her myself I found out she needed more help then I could give her… This was perfect! It explains everything in a simple, easy to understand way. Every page has color illustrations and the print is large enough that she didn’t really need her glasses to read it. Every time she got confused she was able to refer to the book and didn’t need my help anymore. Honestly wish I had this book when I first learned to play lol. Thanks for making this book!"

Best for ages: 7 - 12

2. Minecraft: Guide Collection Book

If you’re looking for a more in-depth guide to Minecraft, this hardcover collection of four books offers a comprehensive look at the popular game. The set includes four Minecraft titles, including Exploration, Creative, Redstone, and The Nether & The End . The books cover all aspects of the game. Exploration takes the user through exploring the Overworld and the Underworld, as well as important features like mining, fighting hostile mobs, and interacting with friendly mobs. Creative offers guidance in building truly amazing Minecraft builds such as palaces, fortresses, caves, and more. Redstone reveals the creative potential of Minecraft as a design tool. Using Redstone , players can build factories and other tools that can create blocks and mobs of their own. Finally, The Nether & The End take players through the scarier aspects of the game, including exploring the dark Nether realm, as well as the steps required to fight the Ender Dragon and how to beat Minecraft!

Pros: Great for beginners and advanced players

Review: “ These books are great for Minecraft beginners and more experienced builders. I bought this set for my 8 year old who loves Minecraft. He has enjoyed reading the books and uses them all of the time for reference when building in Minecraft. They have helped him figure out lots of things in the game that he missed previously.”

Best for ages: 7 - 10

3. Minecraft: Blockopedia

Minecraft: Blockopedia is an official guide to every block a player can mine in the game. Its beautiful, full-color pages guide readers through the literal building blocks of the game, guiding them through each material’s unique properties. Each entry includes “recipes” for the types of things you can design and build with each type. Considering that there are several hundred types of blocks, this guide book is a good gift for kids and adults who love Minecraft.

Pros: Technical but fun, makes the exploration and design aspects easier

Cons: Just blocks

Review: “ My girl is a Minecraft fiend, the girl was speechless when she looked inside, and honestly so was I. Very well crafted book and a good index to make sure you know what you’re looking at. 10/10 cause u know how hard it is to make a girl speechless let alone two of them lol. Definitely get this for your kids or your adult kids.”

4. Minecraft: The Island by Max Brooks

There’s a lot of great guide books for Minecraft, but the massive, open-ended game has given rise to a bunch of official and unofficial fictional Minecraft stories for kids of all ages. In the official Minecraft series there are 12 books, each one written by a different author. The Island is the first book in the series. Max Brooks is the author of the bestselling zombie apocalypse novel, World War Z , and several other novels and graphic novels. In this novel, an unnamed hero arrives at a mysterious island within the Minecraft universe and the adventure begins. It’s a great book for kids who love Minecraft but need more motivation to read, and being on the longer side (250+ pages) it will be a satisfying book to finish.

Pros: Exciting and interesting

Cons: A bit long for younger kids

Review: “ This book got my reluctant reader so excited to read! I bought the book to read at bedtime to my 10 and 12 year olds who love Minecraft. As soon as my 10 year old read the back, he stole it away and holed up in his room for 3 straight days reading it! I also got hourly play-by-plays of what was happening. So glad to find a book where the subject matter is so enthralling that my son read his first chapter book!”

Best for ages: 8 - 12

5. Minecraft Woodsword Chronicles: The Complete Series

This is a great series of novels for younger readers who love Minecraft. Follow five friends as they are transported from the real world into the block-shaped world of their favorite game. It’s no longer a game, however, and they will have to use their wits to survive, build, and explore the vast Minecraft universe. This collection comes with all six titles in a boxed set. They can be purchased individually via Amazon.

Pros: A great introduction to chapter books

Cons: A little easy for strong readers

Review: “ Buy this for the anti-reader in your home! My 7 year old son can't stand reading. He would rather do chores than sit down and read a book. After seeing reviews on this book, I didn't totally believe that my kid was going to be sold on reading. To my surprise, he voluntarily read the book. He LOVED it! He enjoyed it so much that he asked me if I would buy the 2nd book in the series. If you have a child in your home who avoids reading, don't lose hope until you've tried this book. If your son or daughter already loves Minecraft, then this book will most likely win them over!”

Best for ages: 6 - 10

6. Minecraft: The Mountain by Max Brooks

In this sequel to Minecraft: The Island , author Max Brooks follows the explorer from where the last book left off, as they encounter another stranded stranger on the forgotten island. The book shows how teamwork can make solving problems easier and allow kids to tackle larger problems than they could alone. Max Brooks writes a gripping story that even parents love. There are over 10 books in the series, the rest written by other popular authors, so if you want to encourage your kid to spend time away from the screen, these books are great.

Pros: Fun for kids who don’t like reading

Cons: Challenging for younger kids

Review: “ Son loves this series of books. He's not what you might call a voracious reader, but he reads these as quickly as they arrive.”

Best for ages: 10+

Cons: Might be repetitive if you already have the Exploration Guide

Review: “My son loves this book. It’s like his bible. Sits next to his bed and then his computer. He’s now a little nerd with all the facts and tips he knows”

9. Mobestiary

Cons: Might find more info online

Review: “My Grandson borrowed this book (paperback) from his 2nd grade classroom. He loves the game and works really hard to read all the information in the different books. I'm very impressed with this hard cover and know it will outlast all the others he's collected.”
