Top 5 Commentaries on Every Book of the Bible

books on commentary

A little over a decade ago (2008–2009), I put together a series of blog posts on the best commentaries for each book of the Bible. The feedback was very positive. Since that time, many new commentaries have been written, and several new commentary series have been launched. Because of this, I have updated all of the top 5 lists to take into account these new publications.

Each article to follow contains, first, a list of the five commentaries that I found to be the most helpful on a given biblical book. This is followed by a list of “Runners Up” in no particular order. Finally, I have included a section where I suggest one or more books that are not commentaries. Often these are books dealing extensively with some important biblical-theological theme.

Because of questions I have received from readers about the old series, I do want to note a few things:

The inclusion of a commentary or book in these lists does not mean that I agree with or endorse every particular interpretation found within it or everything that author may have said elsewhere. If a book is included in one of these articles, it simply means that I find the book helpful in one way or another to at least some audiences.

I have not read every one of these commentaries from cover to cover. They are reference works, and I use them as reference works. I have read some cover to cover. I have read extensively in others. I have used others for study of specific passages.

Aside from one or two very recent exceptions, I have not been provided copies of these commentaries by publishers. I have purchased some. I have borrowed others from libraries. The commentaries I have included on these lists are there because I found them helpful in one way or another. They are not included because of any quid pro quo arrangement with any publishers. If any publishers did begin to send complimentary copies of commentaries, I would not object (commentaries are generally expensive), but it would not guarantee a recommendation of any particular commentary.

Finally, I would like to make a few general observations regarding these updated top 5 lists.

In some cases, my updated top 5 commentaries on a given book of the Bible are the same as they were twelve years ago. In a few cases, there is an entirely new top 5. In most cases, there are a few new titles that made it into the top 5. There are a variety of reasons for this.

First, commentaries take a long time to write, edit, and publish. With some biblical books, especially Old Testament books, only a small number of commentaries have been published in the last decade. Also, the fact that a commentary is newer doesn’t necessarily mean that it is better, so even if a new commentary has been published, I may not have found it as helpful as other older commentaries.

Second, more new commentaries are published on New Testament books than on Old Testament books. This means that there are more noticeable differences in the updated top 5 lists for the New Testament books. And yet, even here, there is an imbalance. There are more new commentaries written on Romans, for example, than on Jude.

Third, it is also important to note that since I have not been able to read every commentary in existence, there may be commentaries that deserve to be in the top 5 and aren’t because I am unaware of their existence or I haven’t had the opportunity to use them yet. In short, if a commentary is not on one of these lists, it does not necessarily mean that I do not find it helpful in some way.

Before proceeding to specific commentaries on each book, there are two older commentary sets that I highly recommend for every book of the Old and New Testament. First, every student of Scripture should consult John Calvin, who wrote commentaries on almost every book of the Bible. Calvin’s commentaries fill a large multi-volume set, but they can also be found free online . Second, students of Scripture should not skip Matthew Henry’s older commentary. It is easy to dismiss Henry in this age of modern technical commentaries, but his work is a gold mine—especially in terms of practical application. It too is available online . With every top 5 list to follow, John Calvin and Matthew Henry should simply be assumed.

OLD TESTAMENT: Genesis , Exodus , Leviticus , Numbers , Deuteronomy , Joshua , Judges , Ruth , 1 & 2 Samuel , 1 & 2 Kings , 1 & 2 Chronicles , Ezra & Nehemiah , Esther , Job , Psalms , Proverbs , Ecclesiastes , Song of Songs , Isaiah , Jeremiah , Lamentations , Ezekiel , Daniel , Hosea , Joel , Amos , Obadiah , Jonah , Micah , Nahum , Habakkuk , Zephaniah , Haggai , Zechariah , Malachi

NEW TESTAMENT: The Gospel of Matthew , The Gospel of Mark , The Gospel of Luke , The Gospel of John , Acts , Romans , 1 Corinthians , 2 Corinthians , Galatians , Ephesians , Philippians , Colossians & Philemon , 1 & 2 Thessalonians , The Pastoral Epistles , Hebrews , James , 1 Peter , 2 Peter & Jude , The Epistles of John , Revelation

Best Commentaries on Each Book of the Bible

Best Commentaries

I live in a small house. I work in a small office in a small church. For those reasons and others I will never have a huge library. When I add a book I almost always remove a book, a practice that allows me to focus on quality over quantity. Over the past couple of years I have focused on building a collection of commentaries that will include only the best volumes on each book of the Bible. I know when I’m in way over my head, so before I began I collected every good resource I could find that rated and reviewed commentaries. I studied them and then began my collection on the basis of what the experts told me. Since I did all of that work, and since I continue to keep up with the project, I thought it might be helpful to share the recommendations.

My focus is on newer commentaries (at least in part because most of the classics are now freely or cheaply available) and I am offering approximately 5 recommendations for each book of the Bible.

I starred as nurse Lilian Raines on the soap opera the Guiding Light for nearly three decades. That is a long time to hold one job. “creative chutzpah” in storytelling.

The perks of writing holidays.

Christmas in my home means a lot of things. It means dusting off the decorations I put away in January, taking a moment to admire each one and perhaps reminisce about the person who made or gifted it before finding a place to display it for the season. It means digging out stained and splattered recipe cards, coating the kitchen with flour in pursuit of familiar flavors: gingerbread and spiced cranberry and peppermint. And the celebrations of the season wouldn't be complete without pulling old...

Carson says , “The strength of this work is the way it takes some of the best material on the interpretation of apocalyptic generally, and Revelation in particular, and presents it in a palatable, readable form.” Johnson is a trusted Presbyterian scholar, and he writes here in a way that makes the perplexing images in Revelation understandable, helping teachers share the treasures of this book with their people.

The Book of Revelation

Robert h. mounce new international commentary on the new testament eerdmans, 1997.

Carson praises this commentary as “a learned and well-written work that not only explains the text satisfactorily in most instances but also introduces the student to the best of the secondary literature.” In this way, it has similar strengths to Koester (below) but requires less knowledge of Greek.

books on commentary

G. K. Beale New International Greek Testament Commentary Eerdmans, 1998

Tabb says , “Though it has been in print for over two decades, Beale’s massive NIGTC commentary remains an outstanding go-to resource for all students of Revelation.” This commentary’s dense prose provides both detailed analysis of the Greek and solid theological reflections. Beale gives special attention—both in his 178-page introduction and throughout the text—to ways Old Testament images help us understand John’s symbolic language.

Thomas R. Schreiner Baker Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament Baker Academic, 2023

Schreiner’s exegetical work is always careful and pastoral. This volume is “substantial enough for serious exegesis but short enough for the busy pastor to read” (Preface). His book includes a substantial introduction that covers authorship, date, genre, structure, and Revelation’s use of the Old Testament. He adopts a unique reading of Revelation 20 he calls “new-creation millennialism.”

Best Resources on Isaiah

  • All Topical Guides

The book of Isaiah addresses the problem of sin, showing the need for salvation. Isaiah is called by God to speak to the people of Judah and call attention to their wrongdoings—and the resulting judgment. But judgment is not the end of the story; the book also prophesies salvation and restoration. This hopeful picture is what made Isaiah such a compelling book to early Christians, who saw its ultimate fulfillment in Jesus.

John N. Oswalt, New International Commentary on the Old Testament (NICOT), Eerdmans, 1986, 759 pp.

ISBNs: 978-0-8028-7121-3

John N. Oswalt, New International Commentary on the Old Testament (NICOT), Eerdmans, 1986, 759 pp.

In the introduction to this work, Oswalt considers Isaiah’s background, unity of composition, date and authorship, canonicity, Hebrew text, theology, and problems of interpretation, and he offers a select bibliography for further research. Oswalt also provides substantial discussions of several issues crucial to the book of Isaiah. He notes, for example, that scholars often divide Isaiah into three divisions, with chapters 1–39 addressing Isaiah’s contemporaries in the eighth century BC, chapters 40–55 presupposing the exile of the sixth century, and chapters 56–66 presupposing the eventual return from exile. While taking this scholarship into account, Oswalt defends the unity of the prophetic book and argues convincingly that the whole book can be attributed to the Isaiah of the eighth century.

“The best Romans commentary for pastors available in English is still the work of Douglas J. Moo (NIC, 1996). . . . Moo exhibits extraordinary good sense in his exegesis. . . . The combination of the strong exegesis and the rigorous interaction makes the work superior.”

—D. A. Carson, New Testament Commentary Survey, Seventh Edition (Grand Rapids, MI: Baker Academic, 2013), 82–83.

J. Alec Motyer, InterVarsity Press, 1996, 544 pp.

ISBNs: 978-1540960054

J. Alec Motyer, InterVarsity Press, 1996, 544 pp.

Drawing on a lifetime of study and teaching the book, J. Alec Motyer presents a landmark, single-volume commentary on the prophecy of Isaiah. He emphasizes the grammatical, historical, structural, literary, and theological dimensions of the text and pays particular attention to three central and recurring themes: the messianic hope, the motif of the city, and the theology of the Holy One of Israel.

  • Introduction: 32 pp., type of Introduction
  • Original Languages: Greek font in both body and footnotes
  • Perspectives: Evangelical, Conservative, Reformed, Baptist

“As I preach through Romans I will continue to reach for this commentary with joy and hope, as I have since I received a copy in manuscript form. . . . Schreiner bows with reverence before the authority of Paul's letter as God's inspired Word. . . . he is faithful in holding up the manifestly God-centered theme of this greatest of all letters, namely, that 'in Romans God's ultimate purpose is to display his glory to all people'.”

— John Piper, founder of Desiring God

Barry G. Webb, Bible Speaks Today (BST), InterVarsity Press, 1997, 252 pp.

Barry G. Webb, Bible Speaks Today (BST), InterVarsity Press, 1997, 252 pp.

Barry Webb calls Isaiah the “Romans” of the Old Testament, where all the threads come together and the big picture of God’s purposes for his people and for his world are most clearly set forth. Attuned to the magnificent literary architecture of Isaiah, he escorts us through this prophecy and trains our ears and hearts to resonate with its great biblical-theological themes.

Gary V. Smith, New American Commentary (NAC), B&H, 2007, 1,480 pp.

Gary V. Smith, New American Commentary (NAC), B&H, 2007, 1,480 pp.

Examining the words of admonition, rebuke, hope, and faith within Isaiah and relating those themes to today, Gary V. Smith offers this commentary on the first half of Isaiah. Using the text, he encourages believers today as individuals and as a community to humble themselves and fully trust in God. Smith reflects a high regard for scriptural integrity and takes into account current scholarship while emphasizing Isaiah's overall unity.

J. Alec Motyer, Tyndale Old Testament Commentaries (TOTC), InterVarsity Press, 1999, 461 pp.

J. Alec Motyer, Tyndale Old Testament Commentaries (TOTC), InterVarsity Press, 1999, 461 pp.

The book of Isaiah is perhaps the most compelling of all Old Testament prophecy. No other prophet rivals Isaiah's brilliance of style, powerful imagery, and clear vision of the messianic hope. Unlike many commentators who divide Isaiah between chapters 1–39 and 40–66, J. Alec Motyer instead identifies three messianic portraits: the King (1–37), the Servant (38–55), and the Anointed Conqueror (56–66). These three portraits are expounded in Motyer's lucid, insightful, and probing commentary.

The Theology of the Book of Isaiah

The Theology of the Book of Isaiah Richard N. Longenecker -->

John Goldingay helps us make sense of this "book called Isaiah" as a tapestry of patterned collages, parts put together in an intentional whole. The Theology of the Book of Isaiah studies the prophecies, messages, and theology of each section of the complex book, then unfurls its unifying themes—from Zion to David to the Holy One of Israel. Like a program guide to Handel's Messiah, Goldingay helps us see, hear, and understand the grandeur of this prophetic masterpiece among the Prophets.

The Resurrected Servant in Isaiah

The Resurrected Servant in Isaiah Richard N. Longenecker -->

In the past thirty years, there has been little examination of the servant’s possible resurrection in Isaiah 53:10–12. Harry M. Orlinsky and R. N. Whybray’s interpretations, in particular, have been cited as disproving the resurrection in Isaiah 53. Despite Orlinsky’s and Whybray’s interpretations being cited multiple times as as evidence again resurrection in Isaiah 53:10–12, participant reference in discourse analysis, a method pioneered since their works were written, suggests otherwise. The Resurrected Servant in Isaiah reevaluates the scholarly consensus about the resurrected servant and proposes a new interpretation.

The Struggle to Understand Isaiah as Christian Scripture

The Struggle to Understand Isaiah as Christian Scripture Richard N. Longenecker -->

A key emphasis of Brevard Childs’ distinguished career has been to show not only that the canon of Scripture comprises both Old and New Testaments but also that the concept of “canon” includes the way the Christian Church continues to wrestle in every age with the meaning of its sacred texts. In this new volume, Childs uses the book of Isaiah as a case study of the Church’s endeavor throughout history to understand its Scriptures.

Concentricity and Continuity: The Literary Structure of Isaiah

Concentricity and Continuity: The Literary Structure of Isaiah Richard N. Longenecker -->

This monograph explores the structure and rhetoric of the book of Isaiah. Its thesis is twofold. First, the book of Isaiah best manifests its structural unity, thematic coherence, and rhetorical emphasis when read as an exemplar of prophetic covenant disputation. Second, the principal arrangement of the book comprises seven asymmetrical concentric sections, each made up of complex (triadic and quadratic) framing patterns. They are: an exordium (1:1, 2–5), two threats of judgment (2:6–21; 3:1–4:1), two programs for the punishment and restoration of Zion and the nations (4:2–11:16; 13:1–39:8), an exoneration of Yahweh (40:1–54:17), and an appeal for covenant reconciliation (55:1–66:24).

The Book of Isaiah and God’s Kingdom: A Thematic—Theological Approach

The Book of Isaiah and God’s Kingdom: A Thematic—Theological Approach Richard N. Longenecker -->

The book of Isaiah has nourished the Church throughout the centuries. However, its massive size can be intimidating; its historical setting can seem distant, opaque, varied; its organization and composition can seem disjointed and fragmented; its abundance of terse, poetic language can make its message seem veiled—and where are those explicit prophecies about Christ? These are typical experiences for many who try to read, let alone teach or preach, through Isaiah. Andrew Abernethy’s conviction is that thematic points of reference can be of great help in encountering Isaiah and its rich theological message. In view of what the structure of the book of Isaiah aims to emphasize, this New Studies in Biblical Theology volume employs the concept of “kingdom” as an entry point for organizing the book’s major themes. In many respects, Isaiah provides a people living amidst imperial contexts with a theological interpretation of them in the light of YHWH’s past, present, and future sovereign reign. Four features of “kingdom” frame Abernethy’s study: God, the King, the lead agents of the King, the realm of the kingdom, and the people of the King. While his primary aim is to show how “kingdom” is fundamental to Isaiah when understood within its Old Testament context, interspersed canonical reflections assist those who are wrestling with how to read Isaiah as Christian Scripture in and for the Church.

Best Courses on Isaiah

Mobile Ed: OT355 Book Study: Isaiah (10 hour course)

This course explores the main themes presented in the book of the prophet Isaiah. Israel’s unfaithfulness to her faithful God in the areas of worship, idolatry, and covenant obedience is central in Isaiah, and this theme is explored reflectively for self-examination of our own obedience in these areas. Another key theme is the supremacy of God not only over Israel, but also over every other nation of the world and any other presumed god; Israel’s God, Yahweh, is presented by Isaiah as being greater than anything else anyone can conceive of. The course also explores God’s redemptive program and his ability to carry it out in light of his supremacy and undoubtable power. This redemptive program includes God’s description of the character of, and future hope for, his people.

Mobile Ed: OT231 Survey of the Major Prophets (9 hour course)

Mobile Ed: OT231 Survey of the Major Prophets (9 hour course)

The prophets of the Old Testament conveyed the words of God to ancient Israel, promised the advent of Jesus the Messiah, and are still relevant to our modern setting. Paul Ferris educates viewers on the office of prophet, provides detailed character studies of prophets like Isaiah and Jeremiah, and outlines his methodology for teaching powerful lessons drawn from their lives and teaching. This course allows modern students and teachers of the Bible to identify themes in the ministries of Old Testament prophets and to relate them to their church, their classroom, and in a devotional sense.

Mobile Ed: BI205 Old Testament Exegesis: Understanding and Applying the Old Testament (15 hour course)

Mobile Ed: BI205 Old Testament Exegesis: Understanding and Applying the Old Testament (15 hour course)

Embark on a journey of OT Hebrew exegesis with Jason DeRouchie. The books of the OT were the only Scriptures Jesus had. It was books like Genesis, Deuteronomy, Isaiah, and Psalms that shaped Jesus’ upbringing and guided his life in ministry as the Jewish Messiah. It was these Scriptures Jesus identified as God’s Word and that he considered to be authoritative; it was these Scriptures he believed called people to know and believe in God and guarded them against doctrinal error and hell. This course will give you the tools you need to access meaning in the OT, then apply it to your life. It will help you to grow in reading God’s living Word for depth and not just distance.

Mobile Ed: OT291 The Jewish Trinity: How the Old Testament Reveals the Christian Godhead (4 hour course)

Mobile Ed: OT291 The Jewish Trinity: How the Old Testament Reveals the Christian Godhead (4 hour course)

In this revealing course, Dr. Michael Heiser illuminates the Old Testament basis for the Christian Godhead. Dr. Heiser, academic editor at Logos Bible Software, reveals how God was cast as more than one person in the Old Testament and how New Testament writers applied those descriptions to Jesus. Dive into Old Testament theology and powerful descriptions of God, and discover foundational truths for apologetics and Jewish evangelism. Dr. Heiser holds a PhD in Hebrew Bible and Semitic languages, making him an excellent Old Testament guide.

Commentary: Now that Noem knows what’s in her own book, she should tell us how it got there

Kristi Noem owes South Dakotans an explanation for the embarrassment she’s caused herself and the state.

The Republican governor has not yet told us how or why she included a false story in her forthcoming book about meeting North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Margaret Brennan of “Face the Nation”  pressed Noem for an answer  Sunday on CBS.

Noem replied, “This anecdote shouldn’t have been in the book, and as soon as it was brought to my attention, I made sure that that was adjusted.”

So Noem would have us believe that she didn’t know until last week — when The Dakota Scout  broke the story  — that her own memoir falsely claimed she had met one of the world’s most notorious dictators.

The relevant portion of the book isn’t a passing mention of Kim’s name. It’s a full-on boast.

“I remember when I met with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un,” Noem wrote. “I’m sure he underestimated me, having no clue about my experience staring down little tyrants (I’d been a children’s pastor, after all).”

How could such a passage be included without Noem’s knowledge, when she’s the only credited author? South Dakotans aren’t as dumb as she apparently thinks we look, so we can deduce three possibilities:

  • She fabricated the story and thought nobody would catch her in the lie.
  • She met some other official from an Asian country and mistook or misremembered that person as Kim Jong Un.
  • She relied on a ghostwriter so heavily that she didn’t read her own book before it went to the printer.

We can rule out the third possibility, because we know Noem read her own manuscript. Prior to anyone else reading it, she posted  social media videos  of herself narrating the audiobook.

That leaves two explanations: She lied, or she’s incompetent. When those are the only answers, it’s no wonder she avoids the question.

Noem’s other starring television role this weekend was on “ Saturday Night Live ” — but not as the host. Instead, she was the butt of several jokes about another portion of her book, in which she disclosed that she fatally  shot a hunting dog  and a  billy goat .

The show’s focus on Noem made it abundantly clear that she’s the main object of ridicule in the country right now. That’s no small feat while a former president  is on trial  for allegedly falsifying business records to cover up hush-money payments to a porn star.

The governor’s shocking fall is an abrupt flip of the script for South Dakotans, after Noem and her enablers spent the past few years promoting her rising political fame as a boon to the state.

Now South Dakotans can only wait to see how far Noem might drag down the state’s reputation before she hits rock bottom. With the book not even scheduled to be released until Tuesday — all the damage so far has arisen from advance copies — who knows what further humiliation might be in store.

Noem intended the book’s title, “ No Going Back ,” as a rallying cry for her plans to move the country forward. Instead, it now stands as a sadly ironic reference to a turning point in her career.

But the title isn’t the only ironic part of the book. Its 200-plus pages include pronouncements by Noem that “excuses are not accepted” in her state, and that “we need truth from our leaders.”

Perhaps Noem should take her own advice by dropping the excuses, telling the truth about why the false Kim Jong Un anecdote is in her book, and saving what little dignity she and her state have left.

This article originally appeared on Sioux Falls Argus Leader: Commentary: Now that Noem knows what’s in her own book, she should tell us how it got there

Gov. Kristi Noem socializes with attendees during a caucus event in support of Donald Trump on Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2024 at County Celebrations Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Kristi Noem keeps expecting us to understand why she murdered her dog. It's mindboggling.

The best thing gov. noem can do is stop trying to explain why she killed cricket. nobody wants to hear it..

For nearly two weeks now, South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem has doubled, even tripled, down on the story she shares in her upcoming book about shooting and killing her 14-month-old Cricket after she said the puppy killed a neighbor's chickens and seemed dangerous to her kids.

The governor immediately faced backlash and harsh criticism from Republicans and Democrats and chose not to ignore, retract or apologize. Noem has instead talked about it repeatedly, publicly, for days.

The fact that this story was ever mentioned and then struck a nerve demonstrates what people think about candidates like Noem and the type of news they consume.

Surprise! Americans love dogs. This isn't partisan or gender-specific or anything. Turns out, Americans have specific feedback reserved for a person who admittedly brutalizes a dog. Few people can cross this ground without serious pushback or consequences. Noem tested this, then stood defiant.

The media isn't giving Noem a pass because she won't stop talking about it

In her new book, “No Going Back: The Truth on What’s Wrong With Politics and How We Move America Forward,” Noem says she "hated” Cricket and put him down when she realized the dog was “untrainable,” “dangerous" and a “less than worthless” hunting dog.

Apparently, Noem's team advised her to  leave the dog murder  out of her first book, but she didn't leave it out of this one. Now, asked about it on several news shows , Noem continues to fire back, overexplaining why she killed the dog, reminding audiences that she felt he was dangerous to her children and that she's a tough, protective parent.

On the Sunday talk show "Face the Nation," Noem was asked about another dog passage where she jokes that President Joe Biden's dog Commander shouldn't be alive because the German Shepherd has bitten numerous people. " Commander, say hello to Cricket for me ," Noem writes.

The problem with the Met Gala: Yes, Zendaya looked stunning. But Met Gala was a tone-deaf charade of excess and hypocrisy.

She doubled down on this story, too, saying the president should be "accountable." Following the interview, Noem complained that she had been interrupted as part of a liberal plot. Unfortunately, conservative outlets haven't given the governor a pass, either.

In another interview, Fox Business host Stuart Varney asked Noem whether President Donald Trump had talked to her about the dog. She is allegedly on his shortlist for vice president .

“ Enough, Stuart . This interview is ridiculous, what you are doing right now. So you need to stop,” Noem said. “Let’s talk about some real topics that Americans care about.”

"The media" gets a lot of heat for creating a circus. But in this case, it's just an example of knowing a juicy story when they see it and they've capitalized on it. For all Noem's efforts, she continues to walk into the crossfire, yelling, "Bring it on!" as she proceeds to shoot herself in the foot. Pardon the pun.

It takes two to tango and everybody is still dancing. The news media isn't letting go partially because she doesn't seem to be, either. Her reaction is strange, telling and very Trumpian. No thanks.

Noem thinks defending the murder of a dog is the bravado voters want

Here's the thing: Noem's dog-killing story is so unnecessary to begin with, I wonder why she wrote it down at all, let alone chose to keep it against advice suggesting otherwise.

Like most politicians, she's calculated. She's got a PR team. (Full disclosure: One of them tapped me to write her 2021 book about South Dakota but went with other writers.)

Noem seems to have believed that the MAGA GOP wants a vulnerable but tough, pretty but gritty, vice president standing by Trump's side.

I don't see how this earns Noem respect, votes or likeability. It feels like she's trying too hard to be a female version of a Bush-Trump mashup.

Enough already. Who are you, really? Putting a puppy down for humane reasons is imaginable, but doing so and being crude, harsh and bragging about it crosses the line. Noem didn't seem to know where that line was and now doesn't seem to care.

Why are Republicans listening to MTG?: If Marjorie Taylor Greene is the future of the Republican Party, I don't want it

It's easy to see why she might think the best route is to double down on bad news. It's supposed to effectively kill the story, to give it nowhere to go.

But these days, she seems to have poor judgment or can't admit when she's wrong. Kudos for standing for one's convictions, but what if they're flat-out gross, inhumane or just plain weird? Nobody likes an arrogant jerk except for the millions of MAGA voters, of course.

Noem is right about one thing: This is a story and a nonstory all at once. Since she was in the run for the VP spot and Trump's chances of winning were improving, this became pertinent in a way it might not have been if she wasn't in that conversation.

But America doesn't want a female Trump. Even Republicans don't seem to want a woman acting with bravado. A lot of women are gun owners. But it's one thing to own a gun for protection and another to treat it like an accessory for your bravado. Trust me, Trump does this enough for the entire ticket combined. But also, Americans generally don't like women cosplaying as teenage boys. I said what I said.

Do Americans prefer to skim superficial news rather than digest vital news?

Is Noem's dog murder story awful? Yes. From a broader perspective, are there more important things to discuss than Noem's weird home life? Yes. In fact, a lot more important − life-and-death important: Gaza. Israel. Ukraine. The American economy. Crime. The list goes on. This is why the viral nature of Noem's story is her fault and our fault.

The news media no longer tells people what to think. We try to listen to our audiences and feed them the diet they want. Sure, occasionally, they want filet mignon, but a lot of the time, they just want McDonald's, maybe even just french fries. (They are so salty, so good, and so bad.)

The world feels heavy and dark now and sometimes, focusing on a stupid and tragic, bizarre and mind-boggling story about a Republican who rides horses, wants to run for VP and also killed her puppy for being untrainable is the kind of superficial story that feels easier to digest than the rank antisemitism filling U.S. schools.

We all can get behind hating a dog-murdering story. We all know where we stand on that. We know there are probably more pressing issues, but we still can't help but feel annoyed, maybe even a little outraged, that the Republican Party tried to pass her off as a great example for a VP pick.

The Noem story struck a nerve because, for once, we agreed on something. This is nothing to brag about, even if there are worse things happening in the world.

Cct opinion, cct opinion | chris roemer: ‘parental rights’ only exist to ensure progressive parents get what they want | commentary.

Denise Johnson, retired CCPS teacher(left), waits in line to get a chance to attend the BOE meeting to support librarians against the removal of books. Supporters and non-supporters of the proposed removal of some books in libraries, attend the Carroll County Public Schools Board of Education meeting to voice their opinions during public participation, Wednesday September 13, 2023.

Think what you want about the kinds of material that should or should not be in school libraries, but using the term “book ban” is intentionally deceitful.

Nevertheless, it is a term being widely used by partisans and the media to describe any effort by non-progressive parents to have a say concerning what books children should have access to in school libraries.

The term is used because it elicits strong emotional reactions, and those emotions are then used to manipulate people about the issue.

Imagine for a moment there is a community where a book called “Thought and Action” is available at Barnes and Noble, Target, Walmart and almost every other brick-and-mortar location that sells books. “Thought and Action” is also widely available online.

In addition, the book can be found in most public libraries, but is not available in public school libraries.

Would it be accurate to say “Thought and Action” has been banned?

If that’s a “book ban,” it’s a pretty lousy one.

A Carroll County Times commentary recently argued if a librarian decides a book belongs in a school library that should be the end of the discussion because parents do not have the necessary qualifications to question a school librarian.

According to this commentary, parents need to just trust the professional expertise of teachers and librarians to make these decisions.

In fact, the commentary suggests, no matter how graphic, no matter how sexually explicit, no matter what anyone might think about it, people who question a librarian’s book selections forfeit the right to call themselves freedom-loving Americans.

Now that’s autocracy.

It seems “parental rights” only exist to ensure progressive parents get what they want.

Other parents have no right to expect their children will be protected from sexually explicit material or adult subject matter in schools.

The commentary goes on to argue any parent who thinks they should have a say in that decision is a bad parent. These parents should just tell their kids to stay away from books they find in the library that resemble pornography.

That’s a great plan.

While I can’t speak for the kids of progressive parents, I know sometimes kids from conservative homes don’t always do exactly what their parents tell them to do.

Then again, progressives are smarter and morally superior to the average conservative so the same is probably true of their children, as well.

In the world where progressives live, it’s they who get to decide what they want, and everyone else has no choice but to go along for the ride.

If someone insists on questioning progressive decision making, the game plan is always the same — immediately label the upstart a fascist, a right-wing extremist or some other pejorative, and dismiss anything they say as “hate.”

If that doesn’t work, there’s always Donald Trump.

Actually, I have that backward. A progressive’s first instinct is usually to deflect by bringing up Trump, and then quickly follow up with a fascist remark.

So, if you’re one of the millions of impudent parents who think sexually explicit graphic material has no place in school libraries, you are obviously an anti-democratic, anti-freedom, hatemongering MAGA, right-wing radical extremist.

And you probably smell bad, too.

You know, we never had these sorts of arguments before. There was a time — not long ago —  when there was near-universal agreement, if not about what should be in school libraries, then at least about what shouldn’t be there.

That we are arguing about these things now is just another manifestation of the progressive extremism that has infected every aspect of American society.

The current generation of progressives drank the Kool-Aid, and now they’re itching for their turn to pour it down the throats of the next generation of true believers.

Conservatives just need to keep doing what they believe is right.

Let progressives call you whatever hateful name they can think of. It’s what they do and they do it well.

The truth is, progressive arguments are usually so weak that name calling and bringing up Trump are all they have.

Consider how far left we have traveled in the last 20 years. Now imagine where we’ll be 20 years from now if progressives go unchallenged.

American cities are in their current sorry state because there was no one at the table to tell progressive politicians in those cities their ideas stink.

Now that progressives have destroyed our cities, they’ve turned their sights on the suburbs and beyond.

Is it our intention to allow them to do to our community what they’ve done elsewhere?

Rest assured, they will if we let them.

In the meantime, can we at least acknowledge that books available everywhere except in school libraries have not been “banned,” and it is intentionally deceitful to suggest otherwise?
